OBITUARY: William Baker

William Baker was born at Brook, East Kent, England, September 8th, 1835 and died at the home of his son, F.O. Baker, Bushnell, Nebraska, October 29th, 1922, aged 87 years, one month, and 21 days.

Mrs. Baker was united in marriage with Miss Mary Ann Newport at Hastings,England. To this union there has been born five children, two girls andthree boys, viz: William Edward, Martha Jane, Charles Harvey, Francis O.,and Addie May Baker. William Edward, Addie May have passed ove r to theother life beyond. There are ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. His wife, Mary Ann Baker, passed from this life April 27, 1917.

Mr. and Mrs. Baker came to New York and lived near Syracuse for a few years and then came west locating at Hinckley, Illinois, where they livedfor eight years; and from there they came to Friend, Nebraska, where hehas lived until within a few years.

The body of Mr. William Baker was brought to Friend Tuesday for burial and the funeral was held at the Baptist church, the pastor, the Rev. G.W. Stansbury, preaching the sermon. Burial was had in Andrew Cemetery.

William Baker was a charter member of the Friend Baptist church and formany years was in active service as deacon and trustee. No member devoted more time and energy to the erection of the first meeting house than did Brother Baker. The location which at the time was thought to be too far removed from the business and residence sections of the town, was his choice and we can now see that he chose wisely. This was in 1883. Brother Baker was also active in the construction of our present church building in 1906 being chosen chairman of the finance committee.

For some years he served the city of Friend very acceptably as Water andStreet Commissioner . This service, from which he was relieved at his own request as he felt the increasing burden of advanced age, was rendered in a manner characteristic of the man, faithful and conscientious to thehighest degree and highly satisfactory to the public.

Through his long life, Brother Baker was ever respected and honored as a sincere and earnest Christian, devoted to the cause of Christ and in active opposition to the foes of the Kingdom 1
