Presumably all these children died before 1850, as none of them appear with Leonard and Rebecca in the 1850 Census. But where is Rebecca in 1840?5 He, was listed as the head of a household in the 1850 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Mary Yelton married John F. Moorhead on 22 January 1840 North Carolina. The census entries for 1850 and 1860 give her name as Martha, so I'm not sure I've got the right person here.3 Mary Yelton died before 1847 John F. Morehead married Martha Gettis (Gettys) on 9 July 1847. As far as I can tell from the 1850 & 1860 Censuses for Rutherford County, all of John's children were by Martha. Mary apparently left no living descendants.

Henry Yelton was born circa 1821 in North Carolina.2 He is probably included in the household of John Yelton in the 1830 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina.3

Henry Yelton married Rebecca B. Robertson, daughter of Jonathan Roberson and Jane (?), on 10 May 1842 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.4 Henry Yelton, age 29, was listed as the head of a household in the 1850 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Rebeca Yelton, age 35, Mira Yelton, age 5, Eliza Yelton, age 2 and Nancy Yelton, age 5 months. Henry reported owning no real estate. The household was enumerated by W. M. Shipp.5 He, was listed as the head of a household in the 1850 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Rebeca Yelton, age 30, Mira Yelton, age 5, Eliza Yelton, age 3 and Malinda Yelton, age 11 months. Henry reported owning no real estate. This family was enumerated twice within one month by the same enumerator. Given that four of the five names of family members are the same, and I haven't discovered another Henry Yelton in Rutherford County, I believe that it is the same family, even though Henry has aged two years and Rebecca has regressed five. Perhaps Rebecca provided the information the second time. I know of at least one other instance in this census where a family was enumerated twice. Even if the families moved, they should only have been counted once.6 In 1850, Henry is listed as a shoemaker in one census etnry, and as a laborer in the other.5,6 He witnessed the marriage of Sarah Horton and Pleasant Earle on 9 November 1850 North Carolina.7,8 In 1860 Henry Yelton was a cooper.9

Henry Yelton, age 39 appeared in the household of B. W. Anders in the 1860 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Rebecca Yelton, age 41, Mira Yelton, age 16, Eliza Yelton, age 10 and Margaret Yelton, age 5. Henry reported owning no real estate and no personal property.10 He appeared as the head of a household in the 1870 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Rebecca Yelton, age 54, Eliza J. Yelton, age 21 and Margaret L. Yelton, age 15. Henry reported owning real estate worth $100 and personal property worth $300.11 In 1870 Henry Yelton was a farmer.11 He was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 Census of Green Hill, Rutherford County, North Carolina. The family included, his daughter, Maggie Yelton, age 25, his grandson, Charles Yelton, age 9 months.12 In 1880 Henry Yelton was a miller.13

RelationshipSon of James Yelton.
James Yelton was born on 15 July 1749 in Stafford County, Virginia.1

James Yelton married Mary (?) before 1776 in Virginia. 2 In 1776 he joined, as a private, the company commanded by Captain James Primm in the regiment commanded by Colonel Phillips in the Virginia Militia. He served until the end of the war in 1781.3 James Yelton prepared an inventory of the estate of James Yelton.4 In 1784, James Yelton first appears in the personal property tax records of Amherst County, Virginia, reporting 1 white tithable. In 1792, he first appears with 2 white tithables, implying that was the first year in which his household included another white male at least 16 years old. In 1797, John Yelton is listed separately for the first time, and James again reports 1 white tithable. In 1800, James again shows 2 white tithables, as well as 1 slave. 1801 is the last year in which James appears in the personal property tax records of Amherst County.5 For the years 1787, 1788, 1789, 1790, and 1791, James also appears in the land tax records of Amherst County, Virginia. In each of those years, he was taxed on 100 acres of land.6,7 On 4 February 1789 in Amherst County, Virginia he voted for James Monroe.8 On 4 April 1791 he voted for Samuel Meredith in a poll for the election of delegates to represent Amherst County in the General Assembly.9 I haven't found James in the 1810 Census. According to his pension records, James was living in Iredell County, NC in 1810. There are two James Yeltons in the 1810 Census for Iredell Co, both on p. 242. One is age 16 to 26, the other 26-45. Since this James was 61, and since neither household is consistent with what little we know of his family at that time, I'm unwilling to assume that either household is his.10 He testified to the military service of William Yelton about 18 months after the latter applied for a pension on 18 July 1820. James' affidavit is dated 5 February 1822.11 James Yelton was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1830 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male 80-90 and 1 female 70-80. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to James, his wife, Mary (?).12
James Yelton applied for a pension on 15 August 1833 while living in Pendleton County, Kentucky, based on his service in the Virginia militia during the Revolutionary War.. The affidavit he submitted in support of his claim read as follows:
On this 15th day of August A.D. 1833 personally appeared before W. W. Drake a Justice of the peace in and for the county of Pendleton James Yelton a resident of Pendleton county and State of Kentucky aged eighty five years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed June 7 A.D. 1832. That by reason of old age infirmities of [?] and the consequent loss of memory he cannot swear positively as to the precise length or exact period of his services but according to the best of his recollection he served not less than the periods hereafter mentioned as a private soldier in the militia of Virginia and that he now resides about fifteen miles from Falmouth the county seat of Pendleton and owing to the infirmities of body, old age and the loss of his eye sight to such a degree as to make it difficult for him to find the road unless it be one with which he is well acquainted he cannot without great inconvenience and danger appear at and in open court to make and swear to this declaration.

In the year 1775 this declarant then a resident of the county of Stafford and state of Virginia was drafted into the service of the United States as a militia man and was from that time (say about the middle of sd. year) until the close of the Revolutionary war held to militia duty and to be ready to march at a moments warning to any point to which he was ordered. Indeed all the militia of that part of Virginia was so held to duty and was usually called minute men and when there was any sudden call for them they were called for and if they were wanting for a longer time than about thirty days there would be a selection by draft for so many as was wanting out of the whole who would have to serve some times for three and sometimes for six months. This declarant does not think that he served in camp for any time in the first year say 1775, but in all the years which succeeded it up to and during the year 1781 say he was thus held to duty six years and half during which time he does believe that he performed military duty in camp and under the orders of regularly appointed officers at least five months per year and in the whole time that he performed duty as aforesaid not less than two years and six months. He has no doubt but that he served a longer period but will in order to be within rather than over the time for his service at the time aforesaid as before stated he cannot fix the particular periods of his tours of service either as to the particular month or year except that his actual service commenced in the year 1776 and closed with the year 1781 or in the beginning of the year 1782 or at least about that time.

His service usually consisted in marching out whenever called by his officers which was when the English would ascend the Patowmack River the militia would then be called and they would be kept stationed along said river and marching up and down its shores watching the enemies movements read to oppose them should they attempt to land as also when the enemy would be expected to cross the country to commit depredations and the period of service on such occasions would depend upon the [?] of the enemy in the country or the apprehension of danger from them. These services were so much of a sameness that owing to the aspect(?) of memory as aforesaid he cannot state but few of the incidents attending said service that will state a few of them which he has a distinct recollection stating at the same time that he was called on and did serve several times in each of the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780 and 1781 but his recollections of his various tours are rather confused to speak distinctly of them.

The first tour of which he has a distinct recollection was soon after or about the time of the Declaration of Independence the enemy had ascended the Potowmac and the militia was called out and he marched with the company to which he belonged which was commanded by Captain John James, Lieutenant John Edwards, ensign not recollected and although he has a recollection of the persons of his major and colonel yet he cannot call to his recollection their names. He on this occasion marched to the house of one Brent which was on the Potowmac River and burnt by the enemy the house being burnt before [?] set on fire so that it could not be saved. (According to Purdie's Virginia Gazette, 2 August 1776, "Lord Dunmore with his motley band of pirates and renegadoes have burnt the elegant brick house of William Brent, esq., at the mouth of Aquia Creek, in Stafford County, as also two other houses lower down the Potomac river, both the property of widow ladies.") He with the other militia marched still lower down the river to a farm called Marlborough (The estate of the Mercer family, it overlooked the point where Potomac Creek empties into the Potomac River). 13 where he remained some time. He was out this time at least three months. There was other militia with him but he does not recollect any thing particular about them except that they like himself belonged to Virginia.

The next place that he has a recollection of having been stationed was at a place called the horse pen farm on the Rappahannock River a short distance above Fredericksburgh Virginia. He remained at this place and moving about from one place to another not less than three months. His captain this tour was James Primm his Lieutenant and Ensign not recollected. There was several captains and their companies with him but he does not recollect the names of the officers or anything worth stating about the soldiers. The field officers not recollected. The troops on this occasion was called together in consequence of a report that Talton and his light horse troops was coming to lay waste the country by Talton did not make his appearance. [I suspect that this is a reference to Banastre Tarleton, but as James and his fellow soldiers discovered, Tarleton never served in Virginia.]

The next at which he was stationed was at Fredericksburgh Virginia. He was called at this time to guard a number of prisoners of war and after remaining a short time at Fredericksburgh they were removed to Winchester Virginia and he went along and when there guarded them until the militia of the neighbourhood could be called out and organized which made this tour at least four or five months. He was under the command at this time of Captain Primm the Lieutenant and Ensign not recollected. The Colonel was William Philips, no other field officers recollected. There was several companies in company but their officers except those mentioned not recollected.

He was called out into the service when arrangements was making to invest Lord Cornwallis and remained out some time but before he arrived at Little York his younger brother took his place and went on as this declarant's family was in a condition that demanded his presence .

The above are all the minute details that this declarant can in consequence of his loss of memory make yet he will again repeat that he served many other tours of service but he cannot recollect them so distinct as to be able to give a correct account of them nor can he say what particular year any of those tours which he has described was in but does know that they were performed during the Revolutionary war and now again repeats that to the best of his recollection and belief that he did average for six years at least five months per year as aforesaid and in all did serve in camp and under orders two years and six months and was [?] such time called out according to law(?). He does not recollect that did he ever know the number or name of the Regiment to which he belong unless the name of it was the Stafford Regiment which was the name we usually called it when speaking of it to distinguish it from others. He does not recollect particularly any continental or regular troops with which he served but was frequently with the troops the kind at this time not recollected except that he does recollect that he was a short time near the French troops as they passed on to Little York and supposes that the reason of his recollecting them is that their military equipment was so splendid and so far excelled any thing of the kind which he had ever seen that their appearance made a more lasting impression on this mind than any other troops he was with or near. He does not recollect any thing of consequence in relation to any of the continental or regular officers He may have been with some of them but does not now recollect it. He did see Generals Washington, Stuben and LaFayette but does not recollect to have served in company with any of them but supposes that for a while that his officers received orders from LaFayette.

He was born some time in the beginning of the year A.D. 1748. The month nor day not recollected. He knows his only by reference to the age of one of his elder brothers named Charles Yelton who is long since dead but whose age is registered in an old bible now in the possession of his descendants the difference of the age of his brother and himself being recollected. He has no record of his age. There was once [?] an old bible of his fathers but it has been destroyed by time.

He was born in Stafford County Virginia and resided in the same county and state until the fall of the year 1785 when he removed to Amherst county same state and there resided until the fall of the year 1803 when he removed to Iredell county state of North Carolina and resided there until the spring season of the year 1819 when he removed to the state of Kentucky and in fall seas of said last year he settled in the county of Pendleton and state of Kentucky where he now resides and has resided ever since.

He has no record evidence of his services and does not recollect that he ever received any discharge from the service in writing but thinks that he was always discharged by word of mouth. If however he ever did receive any discharge in writing he has lost or destroyed it and does not recollect it. I Elizabeth Henson sister-in-law to James Yelton who has sworn to and subscribed the above declaration do hereby certify that although I cannot speak as to the certain time of his services yet I do believe him 85 years of age and that I resided in his family during the revolutionary war and that he was frequently out in the service and I do verily believe that he served more than two years and six months for it then seemed to me that he was absent nearly half his time. I know his memory to have failed him very much of late years for he could many years ago entertain his family with many anecdotes of the army and tell all about his officers but of late years he cannot recollect anything of the war or anything else and I know that such is his infirmities of body and loss of sye sight that he cannot without great difficulty attend on court at Falmouth to make his declaration.

He lived with Elizabeth Henson Kentucky on 15 August 1833.3 James Yelton appeared as the head of a household in the 1840 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male 90-100, 1 female 30-40, and 1 male 5-10. James Yelton is specifically identified as a 94 year old pensioner.14 He died circa 1842 Kentucky James Yelton the Revolutionary War soldier (and son of James & Isabel) was most emphatically *not* the James Yelton who died in Pendleton County on 6 Sept 1838. James Yelton the Revolutionary War soldier was still living in 1840, when he appeared in the 1840 Census for Pendleton Co, KY,page 243, specifically identified as a 94 year old pensioner. He died ca. 1842, according to the records regarding the payment of his pension. As far as I have been able to learn, he did not leave a will, nor was his death recorded by the County Court as was the death of his brother William.3

Charles Henson Yelton was born on 20 June 1784 in Virginia probably in Stafford County or Amherst County.3,4

Charles Henson Yelton married Susannah Rogers, daughter of Benjamin Rogers and Susannah (?), on 16 August 1805 in Amherst County, Virginia.5 Charles Henson Yelton was listed as the head of a household in the 1820 Census of Iredell County, North Carolina. The household consisted of 2 males under 10, 2 males age 10 to 16, 1 male age 18 to 26, 1 male 26 to 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female age 10 to 16, 1 female age 26 to 45, and 1 female over 45.. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to Charles, his wife, Susannah Rogers, his sons, William Yelton, Barnett C. Yelton and Charles Yelton, his daughters, Lydia Yelton and Sarah Yelton. Three persons in the household were engaged in agriculture. The census indicates the possibility of another son born between 1813 and 1818. There are also present in the household an unidentified female over 45 and an unidentified male between 18 and 26.6 On 21 September 1821 Charles Henson Yelton and Susannah Rogers lived in North Carolina.7 Charles Yelton was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1830 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina. The household consisted of 1 male 40-50, 1 female 40-50, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 15-20, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 5-10, 1 male under 5, and 1 female under 5. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to Charles, his wife, Susannah Rogers. Charles is immediately adjacent to his son, Barnett Yelton, in this census.8 Charles Yelton appeared as the head of a household in the 1840 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina. The household consisted of 1 male 50-60, 1 female 50-60, 1 male 15-20, 1 female 10-15, 1 male 10-15, and 1 male 5-10. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to Charles, his wife, Susannah Yelton, his sons, John Pinkney Yelton, Benjamin Yelton and Wilburn S. Yelton, his daughter, Mary Yelton.9 Charles H. Yelton, age 70, was listed as the head of a household in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee. Also living in the household were Susanah Yelton, age 67 and Wilburn Yelton, age 19.4 He died after 1860 in Tennessee.

The identification of this Robert Yelton (son of William) as the husband of Elizabeth Kersey is a hypothesis based on a number of separate pieces of evidence. Robert (son of William) must have been married prior to his marriage to Catherine Castator, since he appears in the 1820 Census with a wife (or at least an adult female) and 6 children. This can't be Catherine, as he didn't marry her until 1823. Also, his age at the time of his marriage to Catherine (about 38) argues for a prior marriage. There are a number of Yeltons in the records of Shelby County, Indiana who are too old to be Catherine's children, who correpond to the information on Robert's children in the pre-1850 censuses, and there's no other family in which they can logically be placed. At least one of these (David Yelton) claimed in later censuses to have been born in North Carolina and that his parents were born in North Carolina. David may have been named for Elizabeth's father, David Kersey.
