     Gilbert L. Norris was born on 27 October 1836 in North Carolina.^1,2 He is probably included in the household of Mrs. John Norris, in the 1840 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina.³ Gilbert Norris, age 14 was living in the household of John Norris, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁴

Gilbert L. Norris married Malinda (?) circa 1858. The marriage date is estimated based on the birthdate of the oldest known child.⁵ Gilbert L. Norris, age 23 was listed as the head of a household in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee. Also living in the household were Malinda Norris, age 24 and Mary L. M. E. A. A. Norris, age 1. Gilbert reported owning no real estate, but had personal property worth $225. Gilbert seems to be in the household of Beven (?) Talley, but I think the census taker put the family number on the wrong line. The next family (#1140) consists of Malinda Norris, age 24, and Mary L. M. E. A. A. Norris, age 1, with the Norris surname indicated by ditto marks. This census taker normally uses ditto marks only within the same family; see the successive Welch families at the top of this page. I think Malinda is Gilbert's first wife.⁶

Gilbert L. Norris married Amanda Maxwell circa 1863. G. L. Norris, age 33 was listed as the head of a household in the 1870 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee. Also living in the household were Manda Norris, age 27, G. W. Norris, age 5, L. T. Norris, age 3 and Delia A. Norris, age 1. G. reported owning no real estate, but had personal property worth $200. This census indicates that Lydia is male and lists her as L. T. Norris.⁷ He died on 4 March 1877.²

     David M. Norris was born on 2 November 1839 in Tennessee.^3,2 He is probably included in the household of Mrs. John Norris, in the 1840 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina.⁴ David Norris, age 11 was living in the household of John Norris, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁵

David M. Norris married Martha McGee circa 1860.⁶ David Norris, age 45 was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee. The family included his wife, Martha Norris, age 43, his sons, John Norris, age 15, Roose Norris, age 14, Mayhew Norris, age 9, Hary Norris, age 7 and Clarky Norris, age 5, his daughters, Verleen Norris, age 18, Ollie Norris, age 8 and Lala Norris, age 1. No relationship is stated for the unnamed infant girl listed at the end of the household. It's possible that she is Verleen's child and not Martha's.⁷ David M. Norris died on 5 April 1917 in Putnam County, Tennessee.¹

     Andrew Jackson Norris was born on 18 October 1846 in Tennessee.^1,2 He was living in the household of John Norris, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³ Andrew J. Norris, age 16 was living in the household of John Norris, age 59, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁴

     Tennessee Alyne Norris was born on 24 August 1847 in Tennessee.^1,2 She was living in the household of John Norris, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁴ Tennessee A. Norris, age 12 was living in the household of John Norris, age 59, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁵ Tennessee Norris, age 22 was living in the household of John Norris, age 69, in the 1870 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee.

Tennessee Alyne Norris married Eason Wilcox on 25 May 1886 at Chicago, Illinois.²
     Tennessee A. Wilcox, age 62 was listed as a head of household in the 1910 Census of Cookeville, Putnam County, Tennessee. Also living in the house were her son, Burch Wilcox, age 22, her daughter-in-law, Melanie Wilcox, age 22, her granddaughter, Virginia A. Wilcox, age 6 months. Tennessee has borne one child, who is living. Melanie has also borne one child, who is living. Also in the household is Tennessee's widowed niece, Lydia (Norris) Terry.⁶ Tennessee Alyne Norris died on 9 April 1918 in Putnam County, Tennessee.³

     Amanda Maxwell was born on 29 March 1843 in Putnam County, Tennessee.^1,2

Amanda Maxwell married Gilbert L. Norris, son of John Norris and Lydia Yelton, circa 1863. Manda Norris, age 27 was living in the household of G. L. Norris, age 33, in the 1870 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee.³ Amanda Norris, age 37 was listed as the head of a household in the 1880 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee. The family included her sons, George Norris, age 15, Lowery Norris, age 5 and Johnie Norris, age 3, her daughters, Lydia Norris, age 13, Alice Norris, age 11 and Susen Norris, age 8.⁴ Amanda Maxwell died on 9 June 1909 Tennessee.²

     Eason Wilcox was born in 1826 in Pennsylvania.¹

Eason Wilcox married Tennessee Alyne Norris, daughter of John Norris and Lydia Yelton, on 25 May 1886 at Chicago, Illinois.² Eason Wilcox died in 1892.

     James Lowery Yelton was born circa 1840 in Tennessee.¹ He was living in the household of Charles Yelton, age 29, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.² J. M. Yelton, age 20 was living in the household of Louis Yelton, age 39, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³ On 28 November 1861 he transferred to Capt. McHenry's Cavalry Co., 4th Tennessee Cavalry (CSA).⁴ He appears on a muster roll for 31 Aug 1862 to 31 Dec 1862.⁴

James Lowery Yelton married Florida Castle on 16 July 1868 in Cherokee County, Texas.^5,6 James L. Yelton, age 30 was listed as the head of a household in the 1870 Census of Cherokee County, Texas. Also living in the household were Florida Yelton, age 20 and Jonnie L. Yelton, age 1. James reported owning no real estate, but had personal property worth $300.⁷ In 1870 James Lowery Yelton was a farmer.⁷ He was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 Census of Clay County, Texas. The family included his wife, Florida Yelton, age 32, his son, E. L. Yelton, age 1, his daughters, J. L. Yelton, age 10 and L. A. Yelton, age 3.⁸ In 1880 James Lowery Yelton was a stock raiser.⁹ In 1893 James Lowery Yelton was a minister of the gospel, as shown by his officiating at two marriages in Clay County, Texas.¹⁰ He died between 1893 and 1900 probably in Clay County, Texas.¹¹

     William Green Yelton was born on 12 August 1842 in Oak Hill, Overton County, Tennessee.^3,2,1 He was living in the household of Charles Yelton, age 29, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁴ William G. Yelton, age 18 was living in the household of Louis Yelton, age 39, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁵ On 31 December 1862 Captured.² On 30 March 1863 Paroled.^2,6 On 4 April 1863 Delivered (exchanged?).⁶

William Green Yelton married Mary Elizabeth Graham on 22 October 1872 in Overton County, Tennessee.³ In 1880 William Green Yelton was a drygoods merchant.⁷ He was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 Census of Livingston, Overton County, Tennessee. The family included his wife, Mary Yelton, age 30, his daughter, Alamay Yelton, age 3.⁸ William G. Yelton, age 68 was listed as the head of a household in the 1910 Census of Ellis County, Oklahoma. The household also included his wife, Mary E. Yelton, age 60, his son, Albert S. Yelton, age 24. Mary has borne 5 children, 2 of whom are living.⁹ In 1918 William Green Yelton lived in Grand, Ellis County, Oklahoma.¹⁰ He died on 23 November 1932 in Ellis County, Oklahoma.² He was buried at the Debolt Cemetery, Ellis County, Oklahoma.²

     Charlotta Temple Yelton was born on 24 May 1843 in Overton County, Tennessee.^2,3,1 She was living in the household of Charles Yelton, age 29, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁴ Charlotta T. Yelton, age 16 was living in the household of Louis Yelton, age 39, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁵

Charlotta Temple Yelton married Jasper Newton Cannon circa 1862 Tennessee.⁶ C. T. Cannon, age 37, was listed as the wife of J. N. Cannon, age 39, in the 1880 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁷ Lottie T. Cannon, age 57 was listed as the wife of Jasper N. Cannon, age 59 in the 1900 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³ Charlotta Temple Yelton died on 1 November 1900 in Oak Hill, Overton County, Tennessee.⁶

     Riley Yelton was born circa 1845 in Tennessee.¹ He was living in the household of Charles Yelton, age 29, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.² Rily Yelton, age 13 was living in the household of Louis Yelton, age 39, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³ Riley Yelton died circa 1865 in Overton County, Tennessee.⁴

     Robert Poole Yelton was born circa 1847 in Tennessee.¹ He was living in the household of Charles Yelton, age 29, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.² Robert P. Yelton, age 11 was living in the household of Louis Yelton, age 39, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³

Robert Poole Yelton married Decia Poston on 1 February 1872 in Overton County, Tennessee.⁴ Robert survived the death of his wife, Decia Poston, in September 1879.⁵ Robert Yelton, age 31 was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 Census of Overton County, Tennessee. The family included, his son, James L. Yelton, age 8, his daughters, Minnie C. Yelton, age 6 and Mary L. Yelton, age 3. The household also includes Martila Poston, age 26, identified as Robert's sister-in-law.⁶ Robert P. Yelton, age 50 was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1900 Census of Overton County, Tennessee. Other family members included, his granddaughter, Chalice Yelton, age 6. The household also includes Minesota Poston, Robert's sister-in-law, age 42, born in Tennessee in July, 1857.⁷ Robert H. P. Yelton, age 62 was listed as the head of a household in the 1910 Census of Overton County, Tennessee. The household also included. Chalice is identified as Robert's granddaughter. The household also includes Minnesota Poston, identified as Robert's 57 year old sister-in-law.⁸ He died on 6 September 1913 Tennessee.⁹

     Lydia C. Yelton was born in September 1849 in Overton County, Tennessee.² She was living in the household of Charles Yelton, age 29, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.² Lidda C. Yelton, age 10 was living in the household of Louis Yelton, age 39, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³ Lydia C. Yelton died circa 1865 Tennessee.⁴

     Mary L. Yelton was born on 30 October 1852 in Overton County, Tennessee.^2,3,1 She was living in the household of Louis Yelton, age 39, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³

Mary L. Yelton married James Calvin Copeland on 9 October 1866 Tennessee. There is another Mary Yelton, born about 1851, who could possibly be the wife of James Copeland. However, that Mary was living in Putnam Co by 1860. Since this Mary remained in Overton Co with her family, I think she is more likely to be the Mary Yelton who married James Copeland.^4,2 Mrs. Mary Copeland, age 17 was living in the household of James Copeland, age 22, in the 1870 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁵ Mary Copeland, age 27, was listed as the wife of James Copeland, age 34, in the 1880 Census of Simpson County, Kentucky.⁶ In the 1900 Census of, Allen County, Kentucky, Mary Copeland, age 47 was listed as the head of a household. Other family members included her sons, Charles C. Copeland, age 17 and J. C. Copeland, age 12, her daughters, Annie Copeland, age 22 and May B. Copeland, age 15. Mary has borne 9 children, 8 of whom are living.⁷ Mary L. Coupland, age 56 was listed as the mother-in-law of Robert D. Walker, age 47 in the 1910 Census of Allen County, Kentucky.⁸ Mary Copeland, age 77 was listed as the mother of Annie McReynolds, age 52 in the 1930 Census of Franklin, Simpson County, Kentucky.⁹ Mary L. Yelton died on 14 July 1947 in Simpson County, Kentucky.^2,1

     Levira Alba Yelton was born circa 1855 in Tennessee. She was living in the household of Louis Yelton, age 39, in the 1860 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.¹ Levira Yelton, age 15 was living in the household of C. L. Yelton, age 51, in the 1870 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.²

Levira Alba Yelton married Mounce Gore Poteet on 16 February 1871 in Overton County, Tennessee.³ Levira Alba Yelton died circa 1895 Grayson County, Texas.³

     Willie F. Yelton was born on 29 October 1864 in Tennessee.^2,3,1 She was living in the household of C. L. Yelton, age 51, in the 1870 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.⁴

Willie F. Yelton married Joseph Green between 1880 and 1888.⁵ W. F. Yelton, age 15, was listed as a daughter of C. L. Yelton, age 61, in the 1880 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.¹ Willie F. Yelton died on 5 September 1888.^5,3 She was buried in the Green Cemetery, Overton County, Tennessee.⁵

     Donactor E. Yelton was born on 10 July 1867 in Overton County, Tennessee.^1,2 She was living in the household of C. L. Yelton, age 51, in the 1870 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³ D. E. Yelton, age 12, was listed as a daughter of C. L. Yelton, age 61, in the 1880 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.¹

Donactor E. Yelton married William R. Roberts circa 1885. The obituary doesn't give a marriage date, but since she was only 19 when she died I doubt that she had been married very long.² Donactor E. Yelton died on 16 September 1886.²

     Charles Yelton was born in February 1870 in Tennessee.^1,2 He was living in the household of C. L. Yelton, age 51, in the 1870 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³ Charley Yelton, age 10, was listed as a son of C. L. Yelton, age 61, in the 1880 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.¹

     Ula E. Yelton was born circa 1872 in Tennessee.¹ She, was listed as a daughter of C. L. Yelton, age 61, in the 1880 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.¹

     Effie Carrie Yelton was born on 24 June 1878 in Tennessee.² She, was listed as a daughter of C. L. Yelton, age 61, in the 1880 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.¹

Effie Carrie Yelton married James Guy Harp circa 1896.^2,3 Effie Harp, age 23 was listed as the wife of Guy Harp, age 29 in the 1900 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee.³ Effie C. Harp, age 33 was listed as the wife of James G. Harp, age 38 in the 1910 Census of Provo, Utah County, Utah.⁴ Effie survived the death of her husband, James Guy Harp, on 27 April 1911.⁵ Effie Clara Harte, age 48 was listed as the mother of Charles Harte, age 31 in the 1930 Census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.⁶ Between 1952 and 1954 Effie Harp and Herman Harp lived at 1361 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, California.⁷ Effie Carrie Yelton died on 1 November 1956 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.² She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Los Angeles, California, on 5 November 1956.⁸

     Walter Burton Yelton was born on 10 March 1878 in Tennessee.^1,2 He, was listed as a son of C. L. Yelton, age 61, in the 1880 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.¹

Walter Burton Yelton married Lillie Guinn on 3 January 1899 in Humphreys County, Tennessee.³ Walter B. Yelton, age 21 appears in the 1900 Census of Hickman County, Tennessee in the household of Frank Rogers. He is listed as a boarder, and as single.⁴ He and Lillie Guinn were divorced before 1910.⁵

Walter Burton Yelton married Martha Ellen (?).^6,2 Walter registered for the World War I draft on 12 September 1918 in Hickman County, Tennessee.² He was listed as the head of a household in the 1920 Census of Hickman County, Tennessee. The family included.⁷ He was listed as the head of a household in the 1930 Census of Dickson, Dickson County, Tennessee. The household also included his wife, Ella Yelton, age 47.⁸

     Robert Gray Yelton was born on 2 February 1845 in Missouri.^3,4 He was living in the household of John P. Yelton, age 27, in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee.³ Robt Yelton, age 14 was living in the household of John P. Yelton, age 36, in the 1860 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee.⁵

Robert Gray Yelton married Letitia Tuggle on 20 February 1867 in Smith County, Tennessee.^6,2 R. G. Yelton, age 26 appeared as the head of a household in the 1870 Census of Smith County, Tennessee. Also living in the household were L. G. Yelton, age 29 and L. G. L. Yelton, age 1. R. reported owning real estate worth $5250 and personal property worth $1380.⁷ He was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 Census of Smith County, Tennessee. The family included his wife, Lutitia Yelton, age 39, his sons, Huesker Yelton, age 8 and Baxter L. Yelton, age 6, his daughters, L. E. Yelton, age 10 and Eulalia Yelton, age 1.⁸ Robert G. Yelton, age 54 was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1900 Census of Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. Other family members included his wife, Lutitia G. Yelton, age 59, his daughter, Eululia Yelton, age 21. Letitia has borne 5 children, 4 of whom are living. Robert was the enumerator for this portion of the census.⁹ Gray Yelton, age 65 was listed as the head of a household in the 1910 Census of Wilson County, Tennessee. The household also included his wife, Luticy Yelton, age 69, his son, Baxter Yelton, age 34. Letitia has borne 4 children, all of whom are living.¹⁰ In 1911 Robert Gray Yelton lived near Lebanon, Tennessee.² He died on 26 December 1913.⁴ He was buried in Bethany Cemetery, Wilson County, Tennessee.⁴

     Mary Lea Yelton was born circa 1851 in Tennessee.¹ She was living in the household of John P. Yelton, age 36, in the 1860 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee.³ Mollie L. Yelton, age 18 was living in the household of John P. Yelton, age 46, in the 1870 Census of Smith County, Tennessee.⁴

Mary Lea Yelton married James Wilson Turner on 21 September 1871 in Smith County, Tennessee.⁵ Mary L. Turner, age 58 was listed as the wife of James W. Turner, age 70 in the 1910 Census of Macon County, Tennessee.⁶ In 1911 Mary Turner and James Turner lived in Willett, Macon County, Tennessee.

     Martha Miranda Yelton was born circa 1854 in Tennessee.¹ She was living in the household of John P. Yelton, age 36, in the 1860 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee.³ Mattie M. Yelton, age 16 was living in the household of John P. Yelton, age 46, in the 1870 Census of Smith County, Tennessee.⁴

Martha Miranda Yelton married James Francis Turner on 25 December 1873 in Smith County, Tennessee.^5,6 Martha Turner, age 26, was listed as the wife of James F. Turner, age 26, in the 1880 Census of DeKalb County, Tennessee.⁷ In the 1900 Census of, Smith County, Tennessee, Mattie M. Turner, age 43 was listed as the head of a household. Other family members included her sons, James F. Turner, age 25 and John H. Turner, age 24, her daughters, Mayme C. Turner, age 22 and Martha Elsie Turner. Mattie has borne 6 children, 4 of whom are living.⁸ In 1911 Martha Miranda Yelton lived in Gordonsville, Smith County, Tennessee. She died on 3 June 1946 Los Angeles County, California.⁹

     Margaret Luella Yelton was born circa 1856 in Tennessee.¹ She was living in the household of John P. Yelton, age 36, in the 1860 Census of Putnam County, Tennessee.³ Margaret Luella Yelton died in childhood between 1860 and 1870 probably in Putnam County, Tennessee.^4,2

Rufus Burton Yelton married Addie Gleaves on 19 November 1894 in Wilson County, Tennessee.^3,4,5 Rufus B. Yelton, age 52 was listed as the head of a household in the 1910 Census of 4th Civil District, Davidson County, Tennessee. The household also included his wife, Addie B. Yelton, age 42, his sons, Wilbur E. Yelton, age 15 and John B. Yelton, age 6, his daughters, Marion(?) Yelton, age 10, Julia R. Yelton, age 3 and Haynie Yelton, age one month. The census states that Addie has borne five children, all of whom are living.⁴
