Crook County was formed in 1875 from Laramie and Albany Counties. In 1890, Weston County was formed from Crook County. And in 1911, Campbell County was formed from Crook and Weston Counties. Crook County is surrounded by Butte County, South Dakota; Lawrence County, South Dakota; Weston County, Wyoming; Campbell County, Wyoming; Powder River County, Montana; and Carter County, Montana. Sundance is the county seat. The county was named for Brigadier General George Crook.
