Wayman Cemetery Proctor

There is no direct access from Rt. 2.  The cemetery is on a part of Proctor Ridge Road that is only a jeep trail. (We went out on foot.)   Proctor Ridge Road no longer extends to Rt. 2 as shown on the map.   The closest access from Rt. 2 is Birch Ridge Road (Rt. 29) which meets Rt. 2 near the Columbia Chemical Company, just south of Fish Creek.  It is about 2 miles on Proctor Ridge Road from Burch Ridge.

The cemetery is overgrown in some areas and cannot be seen from the road. There are a number of unmarked footstones with no visible monuments, One monument was uprighted and three monuments were unearthed. Two 4-sided pillars were on the ground and could not be raised to check for additional readings. Many of the older monuments have inscriptions, but no special techniques were undertaken to read them. The readings were made on April 17 and April 18, 2001. Each entry corresponds to one monument, inscriptions are in quotation marks, and comments are in parentheses. This update adds approximately 30 new readings and corrects some typographical errors in the data reported for the Wayman Cemetery by Ada Finnicum and Ethyl Briggs in “Wetzel County Cemeteries”, pg. 191, published in 1978. Two gravesites reported in
that work could not be found, i.e., those for John, Mary C., and Emma Tate; and for Sherry Lynn Litton.
Readings that appear also in the publication by Ada Finnicum and Ethyl Briggs are noted with an asterisk *.
