Isaac Smith Cemetery

This cemetery is located at the old Eb Anderson place, formerly the Isaac Smith home, two miles East of Proctor on Rt. 89. The house is located on the right side of Rt 89 and the cemetery is located on the left side. Go up the right side of the run along an old fence for about 100 yards. It is a very steep hill up to the cemetery. The cemetery is not maintained but still in fair condition. It was read by Raymond Estep on 2 May 2008.

The following was written by Ada Smith Finnicum and published in the History of Wetzel County West Virginia 1983.

Isaac Smith a son of Samuel Smith and Sally Watt was born at Williamsport, Washington Co., Pa 1788. As a young boy he learned the boat building trade and became a keel boat operator. He married Sarah Hudson and most of his children were born at Williamsport. At the age of forty he sold out and came to Proctor Creek where he bought quite a large farm and there he built a two story log cabin with a porch running across the entire front of the building and facing the creek. It was here the rest of the children were born and this is where Isaac and Sarah lived until their deaths. There were thirteen children born to this union:
Samuel Smith b - 1828 married Rachel Trater 18 March 1849 - Marshall County.
Sarah Jane b - 1829 married (1) John Graham (2) Henry Yoho - Marshall County.
Margaret b - 18 Sep 1831 married Lazarus Trater son of John and Mary Trater.
Lucinda b - 1834 married A. Henry West - lived on Proctor Creek.
Isaac b - 1834 died in infancy.
John b - 1838 died 22 Nov 1914 married Susan Ann Elliott.
Robert b - 1840 married America Anderson - lived near Hundred, WV.
Eliza Ann b - 26 Feb 1841 d - 19 Sep 1920 married Thomas McCloud.
Rachel b - 1842 died in her teens.
Charles b - 1844 d - 6 Oct 1898 married Mary Jane Wingrove - lived on Huff Ridge.
Infant died 6 Feb 1848
Thomas b - 2 Feb 1850 married Cora Arena Wingrove - lived most of their married life in Moundsville, WV
Rhue A b - 1852 married Jerry Lehew 18 Dec 1867 - lived in Ohio

Isaac lived to be 109. Some say 111. His wife lived to be 84. They are buried in the family cemetery on a small flat just above the old homestead.

The farm is in the ownership of his great grandchildren and a great grandson lives in the log house today (1983), Thomas Anderson.

Through my research I have found a brother of Isaac who lived on Burch Ridge Marshall County. This family married into the Young, Doty, Higgs and Biddle families, prominent families of Marshall County.

Five generations of the Isaac's family have lived in Wetzel County and some are living here today. Submitted by Ada Smith Finnicum.
