Williams Cemetery is located just North of the former Bill Forbes Chevrolet
in New Martinsville, WV. An access road can be seen from the common
entrance.
The namesake for New Martinsville, Presley N. Martin, is buried here.
This work is the result of a labor of five years by Orris Payne Frazee, a
resident of New Martinsville, WV. From 1977
to 1982, Mrs. Frazee cataloged the locations, names and epitaphs of those
buried in the older, southern end of the cemetery.
In 1986, I had the honor of serving as the first President of the
newly-formed New Martinsville Memorial Cemetery Association. Mrs. Frazee was
very much interested in our function of setting up a perpetual-care fund for
the upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery. Mrs. Frazee gave me this copy of
her hand-typed documents which I have posted for interested parties to
observe.
The original members of the Association were: Mr. Larry Shepherd, President;
Mr. Wells Eakin, Vice President; Mrs. Libby Morris, Secretary and Mr.
Richard Duerr, Treasurer. Other members included: Mr. Clarence Anthony, Ms.
Louise Oblinger, Ms. Helen Pyles, Mr. Wayne McCaskey and Mrs. Jean
Fitzsimmons, New Martinsville City Council Liaison.
t is hoped that Mrs. Frazee’s labor of love will be of benefit to those who
are interested in the personal history of New Martinsville.
It is noted that I have three generations of maternal great-grand parents
buried in this cemetery with the names of Hitchcock, Burlingame and
Shurtliffe.
