Zackquill and Drusilla came to Wetzel County from Greene County, Pennsylvania. They settled near Reader, WV. He is buried on the bank of Big Fishing Creek, opposite the mouth of Brush Run near Reader.
Sometime in 1813 or 1814 Zackwell had a land grant from the governor of Virginia, for quite a large amount of ground in what is known as Reader. The past beautiful Reader High School, now demolished, was erected on where James Cochran owned a corn field.
In 1814 Zackwell had arrived to settle his track of land. He noticed one of his horses missing, then he started the long journey through bear and Indian country to find his horse. Three days passed when he got back to where he started from. His wife and son, James, were waiting. It was March in West Virginia, Zackwell's face was red with fever, he had pneumonia. He died there on 5 March 1814. His tombstone can be seen yet in a grassy field near Route 20 at Reader.
His wife and five year old son traveled back to her people until the son, James was old enough to settle the land.
There are other stones in this cemetery but unreadable.
The above memorial was installed by the people of Reader for Dennis Stoner and Barry Van Emburch who lost their lives doing a cross country run at Reader in the early 1960's.
The above memorial is located at the Reader Community Park. It reads as follows: "Memory of Elnor Wise whose leadership of the 1952-1960 Reader Peppy Steppers 4-H Club built the Reader Community Park".
