WOODS CEMETERY
Cowen, WV

Directions: Located three and one-half miles south of Cowen on WV Rt. 20. A large white sign is posted at the entrance to a dirt road which turns to the right off Rt. 20. The sign reads "Woods Cemetery." The cemetery is located one -half mile north on this dirt road at the top of a hill. there is a left-hand turnoff to the cemetery which is clearly visible from the road as one nears the top of the hill. The cemetery is fenced, well-maintained and is accessible throughout the year

Located up Dry Branch (AKA Dry Bread) near Halo about five miles out of Cowen towards Erbacon. Go up Dry Branch about one mile there is a barely visible road behind the next to last house (house currently belongs to  George and Elaine Mick). Cemetery is on top of mountain at end of road,  possible access by 4 wheel drive vehicle. Cemetery is well maintained.

There are several home made markers made by cutting stone in rough shape of rectangle with oval top then carving letters into the face of the stone, then either whitewashed or painted. Every stone containing the letter 'S' has that letter carved backward. There are also small homemade rectangular markers at the foot of each of these graves.

According to the neighbor there are several more graves marked by rocks in the underbrush off to the side of this cemetery.  Before his death Floyd McElwain (always used the last name Wayne or Wain during his life) wrote out a list of all the people buried in this cemetery at that
time.  The list was once in the possession of George and Elain Mick, but is currently missing.
