     Below is a list of cemeteries, past and present, located in Wayne County, West Virginia.
     Transcriptions and some directions have been contributed by the individuals listed in the USGenWeb archives or on the pages to which the cemeteries are linked. If you have transcribed a cemetery and would like to have it included here, please e-mail me.
     It has been very difficult determining what cemeteries are in Wayne County because there appear to be a number of them with the same names — for example, there are four Adkins Cemeteries, all within the Nestlow census map district and there are a total of six Adkins Cemeteries within Wayne County! The majority of those listed here were found using the United States Geological Survey (USGS) pages; unfortunately a precise location could not be determined from those pages until/unless I use the longitude and latitudes listed with each cemetery. The area listed in parenthesis after many of these is the area in which the USGS says is a census map; it does not mean it is actually IN that community, but rather is in the U.S. Census Bureau's map of that name. It usually means it is somewhat close to that community, but doesn't tell us how close. There are 13 census map districts in Wayne County — Burnaugh, Catlettsburg, Kermit, Kiahsville, Lavalette, Louisa, Nestlow, Prichard, Radnor, Ranger, Wayne, Webb, Wilsondale. All attempts have been made to make sure these locations are accurate — as with other pages on this site, this is a work in progress. As new information becomes available, it will be added.
     For those cemetery transcriptions that come up in a text file, some are having trouble viewing them in columns or rows. I found that with any of the text files that don't show up formatted correctly, if you highlight the text, copy (either on the menu or Ctrl-C) and move them to an e-mail (if you have Outlook Express or Outlook — HTML or Rich Text rather than Plain Text) or a Word Processing document, they are much easier to read.
     Sources include United States Geological Survey (USGS), Department of the Interior; Wayne County Genealogical & Historical Society (WCGHS) Index of Cemeteries — there are some photos on their pages, but transcriptions are only available in the books offered there; Find-A-Grave.com, where many partial transcripts, as well as some obituaries and photos were located; epodunk.com; HomeTownLocator.com, www.interment.net, eachtown.com, wikipedia.org, and individual researchers. When a cemetery has only one source, that source is listed at the end of the description. If multiple sources confirmed the cemetery information, those sources are not listed individually. Keep in mind some of these listings may be duplicates, for example, a listing from the WCGHS without a location may be the same cemetery as that listed on Find-A-Grave or the USGS. I can usually match those from Find-A-Grave, the USGS, ePodunk, etc. by the longitudes and latitudes; without those on the WCGHS lists, it is a bit harder. It is hoped those with more knowledge of locations will let me know if I have listed a cemetery twice. Thanks!

Also, unless stated as complete transcriptions, the graves transcribed may only be partial. Not all the listings on Find-A-Grave.com are older graves, but many are; they are submitted by individuals and family members and others and often include obituaries and/or photos.

Adams Cemetery, Genoa. Located in a sharp curve at Genoa, over the bank from State Route 152. See this transcript. (Surnames listed are Adams, Watts)

Adkins Cemetery, northwest area of East Lynn Lake, south of East Lynn Road (State Route 37). See map . This cemetery is south of the town of East Lynn and southeast of the historical community of Stillner.

Adkins Cemetery, north of County Road 25 (Campcreek Road) and the railroad tracks and east of the town of East Lynn. See map.

Adkins Cemetery, east of County Road 22/3 (Adkins Cemetery Road). See map. This cemetery is north of the town of East Lynn and northeast of the community of Armilda.

Adkins Cemetery, off Stone Ft., which goes south from County Road 21 (Buck Ford Road). See map. This cemetery is northwest of the town of Nestlow, northeast of the community of Gilkerson and near Beech Fork.

Adkins Cemetery, east of County Road 21/1 (Coal Hollow Road). See map and partial transcripts (Surnames listed are Adkins). This cemetery is north of the town of Nestlow, northeast of the community of Gilkerson, near the Wayne/Cabell county line.

Adkins Cemetery, Driveway off County Road 21 (Buck Fork Rd), northwest of Mill Hollow Road. See map. This cemetery is north of the community of Gilkerson between Beech Fork and Bates Branch.

Albert Johnson Frasher Cemetery, Lick Creek Source: WCGHS. Lick Creek is a tributary of East Lynn Lake and is northwest of the community of Kiahsville. A map, though it doesn't show the location of the cemetery, shows the location of Lick Creek and community names (zoom in).

Allen Cemetery, Bull Creek Source: WCGHS. This map, though it doesn't show the cemetery, will give you an idea of the location of Bull Creek, which runs along the Kentucky/West Virginia Border, near the community of Tripp and northwest of the community of Crum.

Alley Cemetery, southwest of the junction of County Road 19 (Toms Creek-Whites Road), off County Road 20 (Whites Creek Rd). See map. There is one listing in this cemetery at Find-a-Grave. (Surname is Hampton). This cemetery is east of Prichard, southeast of Centerville, north of Odell Fork and south of Whites Creek.

Alley-Miller Cemetery, Prichard Source: Find-A-Grave.com. There is one grave listed at this source. (Surname listed is Payne.) Since there is no map, it is not known if this could really be one of the other Maynard cemeteries listed here.

Alvis Maynard Cemetery, Mathis Ridge, Dunlow Source: Find-A-Grave.com. There are two graves listed at this source. (Surname listed is Maynard.) Dunlow is an unincorporated community in southern Wayne County on Twelvepole Creek, along the Ohio Extension of the Norfolk and Western Railway.

Anderson Cemetery, Jennie's Creek Road (County Road 52/31), near the Wayne/Mingo border, east of the town of Crum, southwest of the community of Wilsondale, just northwest of Anderson Branch Road. Anderson-Thompson Cemetery, Joels Branch, near the community of Wayne Source: WCGHS. See this map for the general location of Joel's Branch. While it won't pinpoint the cemetery location, it will show the general area in which it is located.

Arnold Perry Cemetery, Ferguson Ridge, Dunlow, also known as Harvey Maynard Cemetery. Since there is no map, it is not known if this could really be one of the other Maynard cemeteries listed here. There are seven graves listed (Surnames are Ferguson, Fraley, Perry, Williamson). Source: Find-A-Grave.com.

Arrowood Dutton Cemetery, community of Echo. Source: Find-A-Grave.com. There are two graves listed at this site (surnames are Golden and Harless). Directions at that site read: From Huntington, go through the town of Wayne, go to the bottom of the hill. Do not turn as you would going to East Lynn, keep on going straight, about 10 minute drive from that turn. Cemetery on right side of the road. Can see from the road at Echo, past Echo Church about 2 minutes.

Artrip Cemetery, off State Route 37, between Franklin Road (County Road 37/6) and Artrip Branch, northeast of the town of Fort Gay and northwest of the community of Genoa. See this map and three interments (surnames Lambert and one unknown with maiden name of Artrip). The site says there are no gravestones, just markers for these individuals.

Artrip Cemetery, German Ridge Road, Glenhayes. Glenhayes is on the West Virginia/Kentucky border, between the communities of Crum and Fort Gay. See list of graves. (Surnames listed are Artrip, Bloss, Dickson, Kilgore, Lorman, May, McCoy, Saunders).Source: Find-A-Grave.com.

Bartram Cemetery, State Route 37 on top of Crabtree Hill. This cemetery is northeast of Ft. Gay and southwest of Wayne. See this map and transcript (surnames include Bartram, Blankenship, Copley, Dillon, Ferguson, Fields, Hayton, Hooser, Huff, Lakin, Lester, Riggs, Shrewsbury, Smith, Thompson).

Bartram Cemetery, Doss Hill Road. The WCGHS lists another Bartram Cemetery near Fort Gay Grade School; looking at one map, Doss Hill Road runs into the town of Fort Gay, so it is not known if these are separate cemeteries or are the same. Source: WCGHS.

Bartram/Crabtree, Greenbrier Creek Source: WCGHS. See this map (zoom for more detail) for the location of Greenbrier Creek. It won't pinpoint the cemetery location, but will give you a general idea of where in the county it would be located. Greenbrier Creek is southwest of Echo, off State Route 37, south of where County Road 27 intersects with 37.

Bean Cemetery, Prichard, east of State Route 52, north of County Road 20 (Centerville-Prichard) and to the west of County Road 18, near Gragston Creek. See this map. The WCGHS lists a cemetery near Prichard as Bean, John Tucker Cemetery. It is not known if they are the same, but it is likely since the cemetery location is just east of the community of Prichard.

Beemer Wellman Cemetery, State Route 37 & Beemer Wellman Hill. Source: WCGHS. No cemetery of this name is listed with USGS or Find-A-Grave. However, a Wellman Cemetery in Prichard is listed in both, but it isn't known if it is the same.

Blair Cemetery aka Blair Hatten Cemetery aka Ben Blair Cemetery (Centerville), near intersection of County Road 18 and O'Dell Branch Road. A partial transcription is in the WVGenWeb Archives and it lists the location as "on Prichard to Centerville Rd. between Centerville and Upper Gragston (Creek)." Blair Cemetery, German Ridge Road. There is no other information listed; WCGHS also lists the Blair Cemetery in the previous entry so this is presumed to be a second Blair Cemetery in Wayne County. Source: WCGHS.

Brumfield Cemetery, Summer Fork of Bull Creek, near Crum. While there is no map that pinpoints the cemetery, the following map shows the Summer Fork of Bull Creek, which can provide some idea of where in the county the cemetery might be located. There are 20 interments at Find-A-Grave.com (surnames include Brumfield, Copley, Damron, Moore, Salmons, Spradling, Taylor, Wooten, and five Unknown/illegible stones). The transcriber for this cemetery included the following notes: "This Cemetery may also be known as: Brumfield-Damron Cemetery or Damron-Brumfield Cemetery. I have chosen the address as Crum, WV, as, on the death certificate of Sarah "Sally" Spradling, it is noted she was buried in the "Damron" Cemetery, Crum, WV. Also, per other researchers, this Cemetery was moved from the top of Bull Creek Mountain because of the construction of Tolsia Highway, graves having been moved about 1981 - Because of this, the address may not now be Crum, WV." Note: the community of Crum is nearby if one looks at the map of Summer Fork. Brumfield Cemetery. There is no location or directions given for this cemetery, listed in Volume IV of the WCGHS cemetery index; note the Brumfield Cemetery located on the Summer Fork of Bull Creek was listed in Volume III; it is not known without seeing the society's volumes if this cemetery was transcribed twice or if there is a second Brumfield Cemetery. Brumfield Cemetery, Lower Newcomb Road. While there is no map of the cemetery location, the source lists one interment (surname is Harmon). Cart Mills Cemetery, Tiger Fork, Camp Creek Source: WCGHS. There is no map with this cemetery's location, but this map shows Tiger Fork on Camp Creek Road (County Road 25). It won't pinpoint the cemetery, but might provide some details about the area in which the cemetery is located.

Cassiday Cemetery, community of Stonecoal Source: WCGHS. This map will show you where Stonecoal is in Wayne County (at the West Virginia/Kentucky border), off U.S. Hwy. 52, north of County Road 52/33 (Stonecoal Branch Road), but it doesn't pinpoint the cemetery.

Cassidy Cemetery, east of Fort Gay, west of State Route 152, near Hickory Grove Road. See this map. Zoom in for more detail. Note — this cemetery is also spelled Cassady and is listed as being on Hickory Gap Road in the WCGHS cemetery listing.

Cedar Cliff Cemetery, near the Wayne and Cabell county line, northeast of the town of Wayne and southwest of the town of West Hamlin in Lincoln County. It is on the east end of Beech Fork Road, off County Road 34. See this map at the same location where four interments are listed. (Surname: Adkins).

Chaffins Cemetery, Camp Creek, Webb Road. There is no map of the cemetery location, but this map of the location of >Camp Creek shows Webb Road-Crum Hill Road south of the community of Webb. See this page with 9 graves listed.

Chambers Cemetery, Bromley Ridge Source: WCGHS. While no map of the cemetery location could be found, this map will show locations of communities near Bromley Ridge, which is located off County Road 34/3, southeast of Fort Gay and east of U.S. Hwy. 52 (zoom in).

Charles A. Maynard Cemetery, off County Road 41/2 and northeast of the community of Wilsondale. Source: Find-A-Grave.com. See this map for the cemetery location and six grave listings (surnames: Maynard, Napier, Romans, Spence) Note — it is believed this is the same cemetery as that listed below as just Maynard Cemetery, Wilsondale (source, USGS); however, there is no map at this time to compare.

Chatterton Cemetery, Bowman Hill Road Source: WCGHS. A court opinion from 2002 indicates Bowman Hill Road is also County Route 11/1, but a map showing that location couldn't be found without a detailed county map.

Childers Cemetery, Fisher Bowen Road Source: WCGHS. Fisher Bowen Road is an access to the Beech Fork Lake WMA (Wildlife Management Area), which is northeast of the town of Wayne. An address on Fisher Bowen Road has a Wayne zipcode, so this cemetery is near the town of Wayne. Wayne is at the junction of State Route 152, State Route 37 (East Lynn Road) and County Road 19. Zoom in on this map for more details of the roads in the town of Wayne.

Chinn Cemetery, Beech Fork Source: WCGHS. Beech Fork is located in the community of Lavalette, at the intersection of State Routes 152 and 75, eight miles south of Huntington. The town is near Beech Fork Lake.

Christian Hill Cemetery, Wolf Creek Source: WCGHS. This map shows the location of Wolf Creek, but it doesn't pinpoint the cemetery. It does not appear from the map locations for the two Christian cemeteries above that this is one of them. If someone has evidence this is not a third cemetery with the name of Christian, please let me know.

Community Memorial Gardens Cemetery, located 4.9 miles east of Wayne on State Route 37. This was the old Dickerson family cemetery and was enlarged by the government when the East Lynn Lake was built. All the old graves were moved from the lake area to this cemetery. Source: WCGHS. Crabtree Cemetery, west of State Route 152, off County Road 32, near Genoa. This cemetery is listed twice in Find-A-Grave.com; it was determined the first listing had the correct map and eight names listed there were also in the second listing. I cannot determine if this Crabtree Cemetery is the same as Crabtree/Thompson Cemetery listed in the WCGHS cemetery books (location was State Route 37 toward Fort Gay). They appear to be in the same area, but since there are many, many cemeteries in Wayne County, I can't say for certain. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know.

It appears it branches off from Webb Road, at the community of Tripp. See this map which shows the community, but not the cemetery, which could be anywhere along that road (zoom in about four times and use the mouse to move map north and south).

So since I am not sure, I am including the seven Damron Cemeteries listed on the WCGHS website and am including the information about their locations listed there. Frasher Cemetery, just east of the Fort Gay town limits, at the junction of U.S. Hwy. 52 and State Route 37 (off a dead end of County Road 37/1). See this map and photo and four graves listed (surnames are Branham and Frasher). Directions at Find-A-Grave are: To reach this cemetery turn off route 52 across from the entrance to Fort Gay. Turn right, the cemetery road is to the left about 1-1.5 miles, up the hill. The road is paved but has large holes, travel carefully. The cemetery is in need of care and appears to have been vandalized with many stones pushed off the base and on to the ground.

It is not known for sure, but there is a cemetery listed at Find-a-Grave called Hampton Meade; its location is listed as Radnor (though no map was included). See the 1 interment listed (Surname: Hampton). On a map of Radnor, if you zoom in and look to the west, you can see the Right Fork of Mill Creek; you can also see that fork on this map, entitled Right Fork of Mill Creek. A map of Mill Creek shows it to be in Fort Gay; however, scrolling down the map (after zooming in) and following Mill Creek, it eventually crosses under Mill Creek Road (County Road 34) at U.S. Hwy 52. If you follow Mill Creek Road to County Route 152, you will end up just north of Radnor. So it is probable the Hampton Meade Cemetery, Radnor and the Hampton Cemetery on Mill Creek Road could be the same. If anyone can provide confirming information, please let me know!

Traveling from East Lynn, WV, toward St. Rt. 10, after passing the Kiahsville, WV, post office watch for a sign, on the right, saying "Jones Chapel Church and another one beside it "Pres Friley Cemetery (road turning right off St. Rt 37. Traveling from St. Rt. 10, watch for, on the left, a "green/white" State Highway Sign, again on the left side of St. Rt. 37, sign indicating "Wade Adkins Branch Road", turning left off St. Rt. 37. Continue on "Wade Adkins Branch Road" until you reach the top of a very steep hill and, at the top of the hill, a road turning to the right will lead to the Pres Friley Cemetery. Continuing on the "Wade Adkins Branch Road", going down the other side of this very steep hill, will bring one (at the bottom of the hill) to the Jones Chapel Church/Cemetery. This "Wade Adkins Branch Road" is black-top until one reaches Jones Chapel Church. As an historical reference, both the Pres Friley and Jones Cemetery/Chapel are sometimes listed as (and are near) Cove Gap, WV, (St. Rt. 37 actually passes through Cove Gap, WV)." The cemetery is hard to reach and there is no decent road leading up to it. A lot of the markers are in poor condition and hard to read and the cemetery is in poor condition. Was unable to find out who owns it. The names were obtained from several different sources including a walk through. There were several graves I could not reach because of the high weeds."
