Carrie E. Pittman

Carrie E. Davis Marchant Pitman, 86, a resident of Dartmoor, Barbour County, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at her home.

Dempsey L. Prines

Dempsey Louis Prines, 88, a former resident of Elkins, and more recently a resident of Mansfield Place at Philippi, departed this life Thursday morning, Oct. 29, 2009, in Mansfield Place.

He was born Wednesday, July 13, 1921, at Mill Creek, a son of the late Lloyd Burton Prines and Matilda Currence Prines.

He had never married.

Surviving him are two nephews, Emory O'Dell Prines and wife, Carolyn, of Baltimore, Md., and Roy Wamsley and wife, Ann, of Dailey; three nieces, Creta Virginia Ball of Elkins, Bessie Lowman and husband, Norman, of Mill Creek and Rebecca Madary of Carolina.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by four brothers, Salvines, Clifford, George and Thomas Prines; and two sisters, Lyda Woods and Virginia Wamsley.

He attended the schools at Mill Creek, had served during World War II with the U.S. Army, and after many years of service, he retired from Monarch Rubber Co. at Baltimore, Md. He enjoyed watching westerns and was an animal lover.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville.

Foster Teter

Foster Teter, 83, a resident of Job, departed this life Thursday evening, Oct. 29, 2009, at his home.

He was born Sunday, May 16, 1926, at Elkins, a son of the late Leon Teter and Eltha Nelson Teter.

On Nov. 5, 1951, at Elkins, he was united in marriage to the former Bonnie Bennett, who survives at Job. They had celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one daughter, Donna Teter of Job; two sons, Leon Teter of Job and Mark Teter and wife, Linda, of Canaan Crossing, Dry Fork, six grandsons, Randy Teter and wife, Jeri, Wayne Teter and wife, Kelly, Garrick Teter and wife, Kristin, and Lee Teter, all of Job, Chad Currence and wife, Brandi, of Clarksburg and Craig Currence and wife, Megan, of Barrackville; four great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews; and a special uncle, George Teter of Job.

Preceding him in death were three brothers, Basil, Charles and an infant; and one grandson, Shawn Currence.

Foster attended the schools of Randolph County, had retired from the U.S. Army with 20 years of service and had also retired from working as a mechanic for the Division of Natural Resources of Canaan Valley State Park. He had helped with the construction of the Canaan Valley Golf Course, enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time outdoors, was an avid mechanic, and was a member of the Harman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5781.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. Pastor Keith Fought will officiate and interment will follow in Bennett Cemetery at Job.

Haymond Spicer

Haymond D. Spicer, 83, a resident of the Gateway Apartments, 8B, Elkins, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 17, 1926, at Newville, a son of the late Dewey Spicer and the late Florence Gray Bright Spicer.

On July 4, 1947, at Elkins, he married Lucille Skidmore Spicer, who survives in Elkins.

Also surviving are two sons, Harley "Robin" Spicer and Mark "Meatball" Spicer, both of Elkins; and two daughters, Patricia Ruth Hamrick and Elizabeth Diane Jackson, both of Elkins. One brother, Hadren Spicer of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Freda Tatterson of Fairmont, Lou Glenna Miller of Knightdale, N.C., and Mary Nell Chafin of Fayetteville, N.C.; and nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding him in death were one son, Haymond Guy "Dog" Spicer; one brother, Hartzel Spicer; one sister, Gayola Spicer; and one daughter, Linda Lucille Spicer.

Haymond was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy Cee Bee's serving during World War II. He was a member of the Red Men's Club, life member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was employed by Atlantic Seaboard Gas Co. and was one of the first employees of the Randolph County Emergency Squad where he retired with 20-plus years of service. He was an avid golfer, a West Virginia University Mountaineer fan and a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Friends called Sunday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today from the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Pam Schuman will officiate and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Airport Road where full military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 VFW.

John Weaver Jr., 69, of Petersburg, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, in Grant Memorial Hospital.

Olive Summerfield

Mrs. Olive Mavadell Summerfield, 76, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at her home.

She was born Nov. 17, 1932, at Hemlock, a daughter of the late Lonnie A. Daniels Sr. and Lena Orpha Scott Daniels.

On Nov. 10, 1951, she married Ralph Summerfield, who survives.

Also surviving are four sons, Gary, Randal, Michael and Roger Summerfield, all of Mill Creek; and one daughter, Brenda Koerner of Helvetia. Three brothers, Archie and Richard Daniels, both of Mill Creek and Lonnie Daniels Jr. of Huttonsville.; three sisters, Mae Daniels of Mill Creek, Phyllis Golden of Kingwood and Jean Seymour of Mansfield, Ohio; and 12 grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Madge and Margaret Daniels; one brother, Robert Daniels; and twin grandsons, Joshua and Jason Summerfield.

Mrs. Summerfield was a homemaker and attended the Blue Rock Union Mission Church.

Virgil Johnson

Virgil M. Johnson, 93, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, in St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon.

He was born March 25, 1916, at Holly Grove, a son of the late Willard K. and Bessie Hardway Johnson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Leo, Roscoe, Otha, Warren and Johnnie Johnson; and three sisters, Geraldine Myers, Hazel Marsh and his twin sister, Virgie Clark.

On March 1, 1946, he married Vesta Carpenter, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Janice Carlyle and husband, Don, of Buckhannon; two sons, Rex Johnson and wife, Beverly, of Cumberland, Md., and Leonard Johnson and wife, Vickie, of Volga; two grandsons, Ashley Carlyle and girlfriend, Christina, of Greenville, N.C., and Dustin Carlyle and wife, Desiree, of Milton; one great-granddaughter, Rylen Carlyle of Milton; and his beloved cat, Pokey, at home.

He had been a mechanic at Liston's Garage and retired as a custodian from the Upshur County Board of Education. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the French Creek Chapter 36 Disabled American Veterans.

Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Donald Butcher officiating. Burial will follow in Buckhannon Memorial Park. Buckhannon Veterans of Froeign Wars Post 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion, Disabled American Veterans Chapters 5 and 36 will conduct military honors at the graveside.

Carrie E. Pitman

Carrie E. Davis Marchant Pitman, 86, a resident of Dartmoor, Barbour County, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at her home.

She was born Jan. 26, 1923, at Whitmer, a daughter of the late Rumsey and Rosa Pennington Davis. She was twice married, first in 1947 to Charles Freddy Marchant who preceded her in death in November 1962. In 1966, she married Robert J. Pitman which ended in divorce in 1977.

Surviving are two sons, Tim of Pennsylvania and Bobby of Florida. Also surviving, one sister, Ella Strawder of Glady; two nieces, Delma Jean Beveridge and Brenda McCauley; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Robert, Delmer, Clement and Clinton Davis and three sisters, Stella Weese, Rachel Davis and Nellie Bennett.

Mrs. Pitman was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins, at which time she will be moved to the Mountain State Memorial Gardens where a graveside service will be held at noon. Connie L. Pingley

Connie L. Pingley of Arbovale, formerly of Martinsburg, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, after a short illness.

Born Dec. 29, 1940, in Berkeley County, she was the daughter of the Banks Collis and Hazel Miller Collis.

She is survived by her husband, David Pingley; three sons, Daniel Pingley of Arbovale, Darrell and his wife, Kandi, of Sand Ridge and Keith and his wife, Dawn, of Shenandoah Junction; one daughter, Susan Mauck and her husband, Bryan, of Martinsburg; four grandchildren, Blake, Morgan, Anne and Dylan; two brothers, Charles "Charlie" Collis and wife, Cathy, of Hedgesville and Nelson and wife, Beverly, of Berkeley Springs; three sisters, Mary Ann Fanning and husband, Wayne, of Maryville, Tenn., Patsy Mc Gurer and husband, Larry, of Sweetwater, Tenn., and Nancy Haines and husband, Doug, of Falling Waters.

Family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 6, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Arbovale Community Center. Interment will be private.

Hallie Marie Vance Davis, 79, a former resident of Elkins and more recently a resident of Manor Care at Chambersburg, Pa., departed this life early Tuesday morning, Nov. 3, 2009, at the nursing home. She had been in declining health.

Leota B. McClain

Leota Belle McClain, 85, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Colonial Place in Elkins, where she had lived for the last six years. She was born Feb. 19, 1924, at White Pine, a daughter of the late Bud and Ora Mae Johnson Kelley. Leota was the last surviving member of her family. On May 25, 1943, she was married to Irvin S. McClain, who preceded her in death.

Surviving is one daughter, Shelia Kandes Crawford, one granddaughter, Stephanie Elin Haynes and husband, Voras, and one great-grandson, Nicholas Crawford Haynes, all of Elkins and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Craig S. McClain; her son-in-law, D. Stephen Crawford; one great-granddaughter, Lillie Katherine Haynes; two brothers, Fred Kelley and Orville Kelley; and four sisters, Georgia Plant, Greta Whipkey, Nola Kight, Audrey Greathouse and Herma Winchester.

Mrs. McClain attended the schools of Calhoun County and for many years worked as a cook at the Grantsville Elementary School. Her passions included her family and golfing. Leota was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clarksburg.

Nina C. Summerfield

Nina C. Summerfield, 87, a resident of Montrose and since May 2009, a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 1, 2009 in the Davis Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Nina was born June 3, 1922 at Glady, a daughter of the late Letcher C. and Hassie Susan Arbogast Rexrode. She was married to Allen E. Vandevender who preceded her in death on Sept. 2, 1954. On May 29, 1970 she married Raymond E. "Dutch" Summerfield who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Diane Coberly and husband Dave; four sons, Ralph Vandevender and wife Faye, Roger Vandevender and wife Alice, Richard Vandevender and wife Merrill and Wayne Vandevender. Surviving grandchildren include Greggory Vandevender and wife Lynn, Craig Vandevender and wife Elizabeth, Rodney Vandevender and companion Roberta, Teresa Orndorff, Christopher Vandevender and wife Beth, Kent Vandevender and wife Vicki, Rochelle Chenoweth and husband Derek and step-granddaughter, Teresa Coberly. Surviving great-grandchildren include Justin Vandevender, Jarrett Vandevender and wife Heather, Alexis Rae Orndorff, Shaylen and Sienna Chenoweth, Rodney II and Todd Vandevender; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Summerfield had worked for the Family Health Services for several years, as well as a cook at the Kerens Grade School. She was a member of the Israel United Methodist Church and the Pleasant Grove Rebekah Lodge No. 98 I.O.O.F. of Montrose. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family, friends and life.

Nina was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by four sisters, Maple Richardson, Virginia M. Rhodes, Betty L. Rhodes and Norma Jean Kelly and three brothers, Russell, William and Johnny Rexrode.

Ella J. "Patty" Bell, 74, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away early Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born Oct. 23, 1935, at Eden, a daughter of the late Orvil Ray and Maudie Mildred Howdershelt Goff.

On Oct. 26, 1952, at Rowlesburg, she was married to Clyde Lester Bell, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons, Clyde Bell Jr., and wife, Carolyn, Charles R. Bell and wife, June, and Robert A. Bell and wife, Lisha, all of Mill Creek. Three brothers, Richard Goff and wife, Jeanie, of Monroe Falls, Ohio, Darrell Goff and wife, Charlotte, of Valley Bend and Allen Goff and wife, Donna, of Rowlesburg; three sisters, Mary Bolyard and husband, Lowell, of Akron, Ohio, Alice Sigley and husband, Art, of Eden and Peggy Wenzel and husband, Kirk, of Wheeling; one sister-in-law, Rosemary Goff of Kingwood; two special nieces, Doris Ann Knotts of Kingwood and Cheryl Ann Goff Weiford of Elkins, a great niece, Sydney Weiford; four grandchildren, Christina Defibaugh, Charles R. "Spankie" Bell Jr., Robert A. Bell Jr. and Joseph A. Bell; eight great-grandchildren, Whitney Defibaugh, Brayden, Lindsey, Joie, Emma, Owen "Ooie," Parker and Chase Bell also survive.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Charles and Ronald Goff; and one sister, Helen Jean Knotts.

Mrs. Bell was co-owner of Mill Creek Builders. She was a member of the Beverly United Methodist Church.

F.L. McQuain

Pastor F. L. "Wink" McQuain, 70, a resident of Route 3, Belington, departed this life Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, near his home in Belington from injuries sustained from an ATV accident.

He was born Feb. 7, 1939, at Dartmoor, a son of the late Allen Luther Sr. and Appie Lantz McQuain.

He was united in marriage July 14, 2007, to the former Diana Balducci, who resides at their home on the Shale Road near Belington.

Pastor McQuain is survived by two daughters, Sherrina Lee McQuain of Lebanon, Tenn., and Patricia Ann Wilson and husband, the Rev. Gary Wilson, of Lebanon, Tenn.; three sisters, Patricia Howell of Sykesville, Md., Evelyn Swartz of Mason, Mich., and Mary Lou Dolney of Charlottesville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Asha McQuain, Abagale and Noah Wilson, all of Lebanon, Tenn. Former wives that survive are the former Lyndel Pishoner and the former Dorothy Louise Booth.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Michael McQuain; eight brothers, Stuart Eugene McQuain, Bob McQuain, Gary Wayne McQuain, Linwood McQuain, Loyal Fred McQuain, Arnett McQuain, Luther McQuain Jr. and Richard McQuain; and two sisters, Madelyn McQuain and Carolyn Sue McQuain.

Mr. McQuain was the founding pastor of the Faith Deliverance Church in Belington and a graduate of the Belington High School class of 1957. He received a degree in ministry from the Mt. Vernon Bible College in Ohio, and worked in the Brick Layers and Allied Craft Workers Union Local 15 and was an avid hunter. He was formerly an ordained minister in The Church of the Nazarene and was a pastor of the Belington Church of the Nazarene. He was responsible for the inception of the church food pantry and the new church fellowship hall.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, and again on Friday until 11 a.m. He will then be moved to the Faith Deliverance Church on Crim Avenue in Belington where he will lie in state from noon to 1 p.m., the funeral hour when final rites will then be conducted with the Pastor Terry Burgess and Pastor Steve Wheeler officiating. Interment will follow in Hillyard Cemetery near Weaver.

Phyllis L. Sparks

Phyllis L. Sparks, 76, of Buckhannon died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, in St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born Aug. 26, 1933, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late M. T. and Lillie Perrine Corbitt.

She was united in marriage on Dec. 23, 1951 to William B. Sparks, who survives.

In addition to her husband, she is also survived by one daughter, Deborah Hamner of Buckhannon and one son William B. Sparks II and wife, Marion L. Sparks, both of Buckhannon; two grandchildren, Sara Hamner and William B. Sparks III, both of Buckhannon; three brothers, Richard G. Corbitt of Wierton, James K. Corbitt of Tennessee, and Homer J. Corbitt of South Carolina; three sisters, Pearl Beverage of Illinois, Annabelle Hosszu of Colorado, and Mabel Lurvey of South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by one son-in-law, George J. Hamner; one brother, William R. Corbitt; and one sister, Jeanie Casner.

Vincent Silvester

Vincent "Fred" Silvester, 68, a resident of Elkins, departed this life to go home to be with his Heavenly Father Monday afternoon, Nov. 2, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown.

He was born Friday, Oct. 3, 1941, at Coalton, the youngest child of the late Romeo Silvester and Marie DiBacco Silvester.

On Dec. 30, 1961, at Coalton, he married his high school sweetheart and loving wife, Helen R. "Midge" DeMotto Silvester, who survives.

Also surviving are his three loving children, who he adored and lived for, Vincent A. "Andy" Silvester and wife, Ann, of Elkins, Susanne S. Ogden and husband, Jeff, of Elkins and James C. "JC" Silvester and wife, Bridget, of Wilmington, N.C.; and two loving grandsons, who were his pride and joy and "little buddies," Matthew D. "Matt" Odgen and Clinton T. "Clint" Ogden, both of Elkins; three brothers, John "Johnny" Silvester and wife, Esther, of Coalton, Joseph Silvester and wife, Idia, of Elkins and Anthony F. Silvester and wife, Jean "Jeanie," of Norton; three sisters, Mary "Tootsie" Ferruso of Clarksburg, Pauline Johnson of Elkins and Magdeline "Maggie" DeMotto and husband, L. Hugh, of Red Creek; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, who he loved.

Preceding him in death were one infant brother, Carman; four sisters, Helen R. "Dolly" Silvester, Elizabeth Ann "Bay" Silvester May and two infants, Veronica and Anita; and two brothers-in-law, John Ferruso and John B. Johnson.

He was a graduate of Coalton High School with the class of 1959, where he was a member of the basketball team. He was a graduate of the Huntington Barber School and was a well known barber at the Modern Barber Shop at Elkins, which he owned and operated for 11 years. He later worked for the LaRosa Fuel Co., the Island Creek Coal Co. and the West Virginia Division of Highways, where he retired due to illness after 25 years of service as a safety officer. He was one of the first members of the Coalton Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of the Elkins Lodge 1135, BPOE and along with his brother, Anthony, coached Little League Baseball. Above anything else, he loved the Lord first, and then treasured his time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his sons and grandson and he loved to build homes as a hobby. He was a member of the Saint Brendan Catholic Church.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. On Thursday, at 7 p.m., at the funeral home, a prayer service will be recited by the Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, VF. On Friday morning, Nov. 6, Mr. Silvester will be moved to the Saint Brendan Catholic Church where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. the Very Rev. Betty M. Chewning

Betty M. Chewning, 66, of 15538 Burton City Road, Orrville, Ohio, left this earth on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, in Affinity Medical Center in Massillon, Ohio, following several years of declining health.

Betty was born on May 12, 1943, at Elkins, to James V. and Evelyn Markley Jenkins and married Arlie F. Chewning on March 14, 1963, at Mill Creek,. Arlie died on Aug. 5, 2008.

She graduated from Tygarts Valley High School and worked in several occupations including the Apple Creek Developmental Center, the Your Pizza Shop, Tele-Security and most recently for Gary's Drive Thru in Orrville, Ohio. She loved her work until she retired due to her health. Betty was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Orrville, Ohio, and enjoyed gardening, reading, bowling and playing Yahtzee. She cherished spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Surviving are her mother, Evelyn Jenkins of Mill Creek; sons, Arlie "Rick" (Sandra) Chewning of Fountain, Colo., and Garry (Theresa) Chewning of Orrville, Ohio; daughters, Anita Beattie and Linda (David "Slink") Santmyer, both of Orrville, Ohio; grandchildren, Melissa Chewning of Columbus, Ohio, Amanda Chewning, Nicholas Beattie, Alex Beattie, Scotland Beattie and Kacie Beattie, all of Orrville, Ohio, and Jordan Chewning of Fountain, Colo.; stepgrandchildren, Laura Baughman of Orrville, Ohio, Reta (Pat Valdez) Arnold of Marshallville, Ohio, and Breana Ronk and Brian Ronk, both of Fountain, Colo.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Caden Michael Shaffer of Orrville, Ohio, and Noah Michael Allen Valdez of Marshallville, Ohio; brothers, Mike (Loretta) Jenkins of Buckhannon, Tim Jenkins of Daily and Bill (Cynthia) Pritt of Hampton, Va.; sisters, Joyce McCourt of Huttonsville, Jo Ellen (Jeff) Bohlen Paugh of Orrville, Ohio, Sonya (Barney) Kyle of Huttonsville and Lisa (Craig) Sturdivant of Mill Creek; ex-daughters-in-law, Julie (Chris) Seaman of Wooster, Ohio, and Lee Ann Chewning of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.

Hallie M. Davis

Hallie Marie Vance Davis, 79, a former resident of Whitmer and Dryfork,and more recently a resident of Manor Care at Chambersburg, Pa., went to be with the Lord early Tuesday morning, Nov. 3, 2009, in the nursing home. She had been in declining health.

She was born Saturday, June 7, 1930, at Whitmer, a daughter of the late Henry Clay Vance and Bessie Delna Eye Vance.

She was twice married. First, she was married to the late Tunney Pingley. Second, she was married to Bronson Burl Davis, who preceded her in death April 12, 1999.

Surviving are one son, Frankie JR White and wife, Patti, of Akron, Ohio; one grandson; Jeremiah Sir Louis and wife, Sarah, Akron, Ohio; one great-grandson; Zachary; two sisters-in-law, Violet Vance of Parsons and Norma Poe of Belington; one special niece with whom she made her home prior to moving to Manor Care, Sherry Louk Bittinger of Chambersburg, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death were four brothers, Sterlie, Kemp and June Vance and Curtis Bodkins; and one sister, Kathleen May Vance Louk.

She attended the schools of Whitmer, had worked as a factory worker for Lords GM Plant at Lordstown, Ohio, and attended the Whitmer Church of God. She loved her family and enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends so much that she opened Hallie's Riverside Inn at Whitmer which she operated until 1985.

The family will receive friends at the Whitmer Church of God from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. Final rites will be conducted at the church Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1:30 p.m. Pastor James Purnell will officiate and interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery at Whitmer.

Preceding him in death are three brothers, Edgar, Durwood and the Rev. Gilbert Levi Hart Sr.; and one sister, Nola "Jean" Currence.

He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1964, and worked as the supervisor of construction for the West Virginia Division of Highways retiring in 2008.

Wilma M. Ramsey

Wilma M. Ramsey, 92, of New Port Richey, Fla., passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2009, after a brief illness.

Wilma was born Sept. 25, 1917, at Buckhannon, daughter of the late Gay and Emma Riggs Cochran.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carl Ramsey; daughter, Barbara Jane Stephenson; and one brother and five sisters.

She is survived by one brother, Gerald Cochran and wife, Daisy, of Buckhannon; son-in-law, James L. "Pete" Stephenson; grandson, James Carl Stephenson; two great-grandchildren, Charles J. and Cecelia W. Stephenson, all of Port New Richey, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and a very special care giver, Doris Courdt.

Carl and Wilma married in 1939. They moved to Washington, D.C., where they began their first of many successful business ventures. In 1955, they moved to Smithfield, Pa., and bought a Chevy dealership in Point Marion, Pa. In 1957, they opened Carl Ramsey Chevrolet in Brownsville, Pa., and operated that business for almost 30 years. After Carl's death, Wilma moved to Florida where she continued using her business skill in real estate ventures. Wilma was a truly remarkable lady who enjoyed helping others and loved family, animals, flowers, puzzles and crocheting. In the last few years, she crocheted and donated more than 100 lap robes to the veterans and nursing homes.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard McGuire officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery.

Bernard L. Collett

Bernard Lee Collett, 79, a resident of South Mills, N.C., and a former resident of East Dailey, passed away Wednesday morning, Nov. 4, 2009, at the home of his daughter, Tammy Armentrout, at Whitmer.

He was born June 15, 1930, at Dailey, a son of the late Earl Washington Collett and Opal Mae Groves Collett.

He was formally married to Faye Lucille Warner, who passed away on Dec.29, 2003.

Surviving are a son, Roger Lee Collett and wife, LeAnn, of Lexington, N.C.; and two daughters, Terry Lucille Thornhill and husband, Daniel, of South Mills, N.C., formally of East Dailey and Tammy Louise Armentrout and husband, Dave, of Whitmer. Two sisters, Joan Yokum and husband, Austin, of Beverly and Velma Gay Lewis Seal of Winchester, Va.; and five grandchildren, Lindsay, Joseph and Andrea Thornhill, Alex Armentrout and Jake Collett also survive.

Also preceding him in death was an infant brother, James Lee Collett.

Mr. Collett was a veteran of the Korean War having served with the U.S. Air Force in England.

He was employed by Lab Craft at Beverly and in May 2007, he retired from Colonial Mill Works at Beverly. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church of South Mills, N.C., and a former member of the Tygart Valley Baptist Church in Beverly.

He was also a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion.

Dorothy B. Sloan

Dorothy "Dot" Bosworth Sloan, 94, of Crystal Springs, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Friday, March 12, 1915, at Beverly, a daughter of the late Mary and Carroll Bosworth.

On June 29, 1935, in Oakland, Md., she married Maynard Sloan, who preceded her in death in February 1994.

She was a lifelong resident of Randolph County. In 1932, she graduated from Beverly High School. She enjoyed vegetable gardening and canning as recently as this year.

During her 60 years as a faithful charter member of The Otterbein United Methodist Church in Elkins, she served in several capacities. She was a trustee, treasurer, president of the Ladies United Methodist Auxiliary and a member of the church choir. She was on the board of directors for Good Shepherd Ministries. She was a volunteer for the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary until September 2009.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one infant son, Roscoe Maynard Sloan; one sister, Pauline Pritt; and five brothers, Bernard "Brownie" Bosworth, Newton Bosworth, "Bud" Bosworth, Richard "Dick" Bosworth and Owen "Shike" Bosworth.

Dot's survivors include two daughters, Pat Reed and husband, Jim, of Beckley and Dottie Arbogast and husband, Dale, of Elkins; four grandchildren, Cindy Reed of Cincinnati, Ohio, Lisa Jeffrey and husband, Keith, of Beckley, Kevin Arbogast and friend, Janna Christy, of Morgantown and Ryan Arbogast and wife, Stacy, of Elkins; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Skylar and Lynlee; one sister, Nina Thompson of Panama City, Fla.; one brother, Charles Bosworth of Maryland; several nieces and nephews; and a host of very special friends.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 1100 S. Davis Ave.; Elkins, W.Va. 26241, in memory of Dorothy "Dot" Bosworth Sloan.

Hallie Marie Vance Davis, 79, a former resident of Whitmer and Dryfork,and more recently a resident of Manor Care at Chambersburg, Pa., went to be with the Lord early Tuesday morning, Nov. 3, 2009, in the nursing home. She had been in declining health.

Clarence K. Smith

Clarence Keith Smith, 46, of Mesquite, Texas, passed away Oct. 11, 2009, of a massive heart attack.

He was born June 10, 1963, a son of the late Mural and Mary Lamb Harman Smith.

He is survived by three daughter, Britini, Chelesa and BreAnn; and three grandchildren, Jake, Presley and Chloe, all of Mesquite, Texas. He is also survived by two sisters, Betty Huffman and Louise Teter; and one brother, Teddy Harman.

Preceding him in death was one sister, Rosalea Robson.

Herman Warner

Herman Warner, 70, of North Ridgeville, Ohio passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at the Cleveland Clinic. Herman was formerly of Green Bank.

He was born July 21, 1939, at Cherry Grove, a son of the late Okie O. and Martha H. Sponaugle Warner.

Herman is survived by his wife, Debbie Warner; one daughter, Amanda Warner of Ohio; three sons, Mike and wife, Patty, of Ohio, Richard and wife, Linda, of Ohio and Stevie of Ohio; and one brother, Guy of West Virginia. He is also survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Robert Weese

Robert "Bob" Weese, 72, of Bridgeport, Ohio, died Wednesday, Nov.4, 2009, in Heartland Lansing Care Center.

He was born Jan. 19, 1937, at Elkins, the son of the late Howard and Stella Woolwine Weese.

Bob retired from T.C.I. of Ohio where he was manager of the Ohio office for 35 years. He was a member of the Lansing Methodist Church, Lansing Sportsman's Club, Polish Club in Wolfhurst, Bridgeport Eagles Aerie 995 and the former Martins Ferry Kiwanis Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Bud Weese; and three sisters Beryl Roy, Janie Teets and Billie Taylor.

Bob is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mildred "Mike" Ketterman Weese; a son, Scott Weese and his wife, Jan, of Groveport, Ohio; a daughter, Brenda Dawson and her husband, Brian, of Uniontown, Ohio; a brother, Harry Weese and his wife, Carol, of Phoenix, Ore.; three granddaughters Rachel, Rebecca and Bethany Dawson; and good buddy, Wilson Weese.

Bob loved life, friends and most of all his family. He was an avid Bridgeport Bulldog fan. "Go Bulldogs!" "Keep movin!"

Ruth A. Fincham

Ruth Ann Fincham, 70, of Gatlinburg, Tenn., formerly of Mill Creek, was carried home by angels on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009.

She was born Friday, Nov. 25, 1938, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Eli and Catherine Skinner Poling.

Ruth was a very dedicated grandmother to her grandbabies and great-grandbabies. Some of Ruth's hobbies were quilting, sewing, crocheting and baking pies and delicious homemade bread. She enjoyed going to yard sales. She was a lifelong member of Jerusalem Methodist Church of Mill Creek and The Gathering of Sevierville, Tenn. She spent many hours reading and studying the Bible. Ruth was a self-employed beautician for many years

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Fincham, in September 2006.

Ruth's survivors include her son, Rodney Fincham and wife, Diane, of Sevierville, Tenn.; daughter, Paula Currence and husband, Mike, of Mill Creek; two sisters, Patty Tenney and husband, Robert, of Niles, Ohio, and Ihonalee Croston and, Jim, of Mill Creek; one brother, Roger Poling of Mill Creek; three grandsons, Rodney P. Fincham and wife, Valerie, Brian Fincham and Nickie and Justin Gilbert and Kellie; three granddaughters, Heather Currence and J.T., Amanda Currence and Jamie Mask and Matt; four great-grandchildren, Miya and Paul Gilbert and Leah and Natalee Mask, and many nieces and nephews.

Teresa J. Thorne

Teresa J. Thorne, 82, of Belington, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, in the Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born March 12, 1927, at Dotson, Md., a daughter of the late John Joseph and Julia Kotyuk Grega.

She was married to Hubert E. Thorne, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by one son, James Thorne and wife, Cheryl, of Belington; two daughters, Patty Howell and husband, Terry, of Salem and Terry Summers and husband, Bob, of Midlothian, Va. Seven grandchildren, Gregory Summers and wife, Kalli, Bryan Summers, Erik Howell, Misty Osborne and husband, John, Brian Thorne and wife, Nicole, Tiffany Robins and husband, Blake, and Dustin Thorne; and seven great-grandchildren, Caleb Summers, Casey, Chase, Chance and Caitlynne Howell, Austin Osborne and Baine Robins also survive.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers and three sisters.

Teresa was a 1945 graduate of Washington Irving High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church at Buckhannon.

At Teresa's request, her remains will be cremated.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until noon Monday at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A memorial service will be held at noon Monday from the funeral home chapel with the Very Reverend Father Donald X. Higgs, VF, officiating.
