Janet L. Rhoades

Janet Louise Miller Rhoades, 97, a resident of Hambleton, departed this life Sunday evening, Oct.25, 2009, at her home.

Jeffrey S. Daniels

Jeffrey Steven Daniels, 47, a former resident of the Chenoweth Creek Road Community, and for the past 25 years a resident of Charlotte, N.C., departed this life early Friday morning, Oct. 23, 2009, in Presbyterian Hospital at Charlotte, N.C., following a sudden illness.

He was born Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1962, at Elkins, a son of the late Robert Ronald "Bob" Daniels and Dorothy Louise "Dottie" Channell Daniels, who survives on Chenoweth Creek Road.

He had never married.

Also surviving are two sisters, Debra Ann Daniels and husband, Dr. David McClure, of Bruceton Mills, and Tracy Lynn Combs and husband, Kevin, of Charlottesville, Va.; two nephews, Rob Combs of Charlottesville, Va., and Dr. Samuel Swisher McClure of Philadelphia, Pa.; three nieces Jordan Combs, a student at James Madison University, Kelsey Combs and Madison Combs, both of Charlottesville, Va.; one great-aunt, Norma Boserman of Elkins; several cousins, aunts and uncles; his Charlotte, N.C., family; and his beloved dog, Bella "Olive Juice."

Preceding him in death was one brother, Robert Ronald Daniels Jr.

He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1980, attended Potomac State College and was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with the class of 1984 with a degree in business. He was elected into Who's Who of American Junior Colleges. He worked for the U.S. Shipping Lines of Cleveland, Ohio, Bax Global of Charlotte, N.C., and more recently Maersk Shipping of Charlotte, N.C., where he worked in sales and marketing.

He was very active in the Midland 4-H Club as a Delaware Tribesman, was an avid fan of the Charlotte Panthers, loved to travel and was a connoisseur of fine wine and food. He enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music, having attended the annual Merlefest at North Carolina. He never met a stranger.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Robert L. Lowther will officiate and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Airport Road.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Mountaineer Spay Neuter Assistance Program, P.O. Box 4335, Morgantown, W.Va. 26504.

Russell Arbogast

Russell V. Arbogast Jr., 72, a resident of Harman, passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2009, at his home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1936, at Harman, a son of the late Russell V. Arbogast and the late Alda Christine Waybright Arbogast.

On June 18, 1979, he was married to Vera Jean Wolford Arbogast, who survives at Harman.

Also surviving are one son, Randall Arbogast and wife, Sandra, of Elkins; one stepson, David Bennett and wife, Grace, of Onego; and one stepdaughter, Jennie Raines and husband, Jerry, of Harman. Also surviving are one sister, Delphia Mick and husband, William, of Harman; and two grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, two nieces, one nephew and one great-nephew.

Also preceding him in death were one brother, Ray Arbogast; one stepgranddaughter, Danielle Raines; and a great-nephew, Mathew Wilbert.

Mr. Arbogast was a graduate of Harman High School and was employed as a salesman and field representative for Roy's Home Sales prior to his retirement. He was a member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 A.F. & A.M., The Scottish Rite and the Osiris Shrine of Wheeling and attended the Harman Presbyterian Church.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Rick Lewellen officiating. Interment will follow in North Fork Memorial Cemetery at Riverton.

Shirley Thompson

Shirley Ann Austin Thompson, 67, a resident of Route 3, Hacker Creek, Philippi, passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, surrounded by her family in Ruby Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 25, 1942, at Grafton, a daughter of the late Raymond and Hazel Ruth Cox Austin.

She was united in marriage Oct. 7, 1975, to Michael L. Thompson. who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Betty Tretinik of Morgantown; five sons, Steve and wife, Marie Blake, of Masontown, Charlie and Barb Blake of Junior; Clifford and Jenny Blake of Elkins, Mark Blake of Columbus, Ohio, and Dorsey and wife, Angie Thompson, of Moatsville; several nieces and nephews; 12 grandchildren, Hillary and Herb Smitley, Fawna Orich, Stephanie and fiance William Morel, Steven Blake, Bobby and Amy Martin, James Blake, Chastady Talkington, Greg Blake, Alex and Andrew Thompson; and four great-grandchildren; Jasime, Tia Anna, Dustin Smitley and Logan Martin.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Lee Austin, and one sister, Evelyn Kellaway.

Mrs. Thompson worked as a home health care provider for the Senior Citizen Center for more than 20 years. She loved animals, traveling, shopping and puzzles. She belonged to the Barbour County Relay for Life and was a team member of Circle of Hope. She was a Christian by faith.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the service hour with Pastor Howard Swick officiating. Interment will follow in Knottsville Cemetery in Grafton.  From 26 Oct 2009.

Boyd Lynn Phillips

Boyd Lynn Phillips, 70, a resident of Route 4, Elkins, the Airport Road, passed away at 2:28 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at his home.

He was born July 16, 1939, at Elkins, a son of the late Chester A. and Creta Evelyn Summerfield Phillips.

On May 3, 1964, in Oakland, Md., he was married to Lillian Irene Daft Shelton, who preceded him in death on Aug. 23, 2007.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Robert L. (Wilma) Miller of Elkins and Mrs. William Paul (Anna Ruth) Stalnaker of Buckhannon. Four brothers, William A. Phillips and wife, Glenna, Kenneth Lloyd Phillips and wife, Shelia, and Allen D. Phillips all of Elkins, and Calvin E. Phillips and wife, Shirley, of Huntington; and sister-in-law, Helen L. Phillips of the Chenoweth Creek community. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

One brother, Dorman C. Phillips; one sister, Clara Burnida Phillips; two-great nephews; and one great-niece also preceded him in death.

His extended family includes Jerry Shelton of Beverly, Bobby Shelton of Pennsylvania, Sandra Brown of Ohio, Gloria Miller and Janet Skidmore of Elkins, Dorothy Durante of Pennsylvania and Kathy Moore of Belington.

Boyd attended the schools of Randolph County and worked for Central West Virginia Aging Services Inc. prior to becoming unable to work last year. He had battled cancer for the past five years.

He was a well known West Virginia fiddle player. He began playing the fiddle at the age of 13. His father bought him a Czech Fiddle purchased through the Randolph County School System at the age of 15 which he played until the time of his death. In the 1950s, he was in many local contests along the East Coast of the United States and continued to play for Augusta, West Virginia Tours and was a frequent guest of the Vandalia Festival in Charleston. He enjoyed performing tremendously for others. He loved the Lord and was a Christian by faith.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.

Herbert Greene

Herbert "Gene" Greene, 79, of Buckhannon, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, in Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.

He was born Jan. 16, 1930, at Clarksburg, a son of the late David Prosper and Amanda Ruth Gould Greene.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Connie Rhodes; three brothers, Harold, Lyndon Gay and David Kenneth Greene; and one sister, Ruby Maxine Mullins.

Mr. Greene is survived by one daughter, Patty Perrine of Buckhannon; one son, David Clark Greene and wife, Denice, of South Carolina; four granddaughters, Suzanna Rhodes of Buckhannon, Mary Jo Smith of Alaska, and Beth Ann and Shelly Lynn Greene, both of South Carolina; one grandson, Geoffrey Perrine of Buckhannon; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Greene of Constantine, Mich.; and his wife, Mary Maxine Greene of Buckhannon.

He was a construction worker for C & R Builders.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Janet L. Rhoades

Janet Louise Miller Bohon Rhoades, 97, a resident of Hambleton, departed this life Sunday evening, Oct. 25, 2009, at her home. She had been in declining health.

She was born Monday, Sept. 23, 1912, in Maryland, a daughter of the late Christopher and Harriet Nethken Miller.

She was twice married. On Aug. 14, 1928, she was married to Toney C. Bohon, who preceded her in death during 1946, and second on Nov. 3, 1962, she was married to Howard M. Rhoades, who preceded her in death Aug. 30, 1986.

Surviving are three sons, Robert G. Bohon of Elkins, Dearl R. Bohon of Hambleton and Oved W. Bohon of Parsons; three daughters, Mrs. Foster (Delain) Mullenax of Elkins, Della Akins and Mrs. Nick (Delores) Nine, both of Hambleton; and 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by three brothers, Ruben Friend, Robert Friend and Roland Miller; and four sisters, Alice Diege Friend, Martha Elizabeth Bohon, Christlena Cassidy and Florence Cogley.

She attended the one-room school No. 6 at Location. She was a homemaker and an avid seamstress. She was a member of the Parsons Church of God and the Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Parsons Senior Center and The Daughters of Rachel.

Katherine M. Kesling

Katherine M. Kesling, 84, of Buckhannon, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at her home.

She was born Aug. 29, 1925, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Lee and Gladys Mackey Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. Kesling, who died on May 10, 1976.

In addition to her parents and husband, she preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Sigler; two sons, Ronald Lee Kesling and Thomas Kesling; and one brother, Carl Smith.

She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Weaver of Buckhannon, Carolyn "Sue" Barron and husband, John, of York, Pa., and Lois Hain and husband, Adam, of New Freedom, Pa.; one son, Michael Kesling of Buckhannon; two sisters, Evelyn Rhodes of Harrisville and Edith Lewis of Ohio; one brother, Jim Smith of Buckhannon; and 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Kesling was a member of the North Buckhannon United Methodist Church, a member of the Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663 Ladies Auxiliary and the Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598.

Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour, with the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon officiating. Burial will follow in Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon.

Leah N. Knotts

Leah Nazelrod King Knotts, 85, a resident of Parsons, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009. She died peacefully at her home after battling with her declining health issues over the past few months.

She was born Feb. 23, 1924, at Parsons, a daughter of the late "Dewey" and Ruth West Nazelrod.

On Feb. 14, 1975, at Red House, Md., she was married to Kenneth "Moats" Knotts, who survives. They celebrated 35 wonderful years of marriage.

Also surviving are two sons, Linton King and wife, Kaye, of Orlando, Fla., and Randall King of Elkins; one daughter, Roberta King of Elkins; one sister, Marie Young of Elkins; seven grandchildren, Lisa Brown and husband, Charles, Bryan King and wife, Royal, Jennifer Shaffer and husband, Larry, Joshua King, Justin King, Jason Morhard and Shelley Watson; and six great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was one grandson, Jesse Morhard.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1942. She worked as a social worker for the Appalachian Mental Health Center in Parsons for more than 20 years, retiring in 1986. Leah was a dedicated officer of the Liberty Rebekah Lodge 95. She was known there for her sweet spirit and generous nature. Leah will not only be missed by her family and her husband, but also by her many friends. She will be in their hearts forever.

Mabel Haslebacher

Mabel Marie (Betler) Haslebacher, 88, of Clarksburg, had a stroke while visiting her daughter, and passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington.

She was born at Helvetia/Pickens on Dec. 9, 1920, a daughter of the late Anna Marie (Haessig) and Otto Fred Betler.

Mabel was a member of Vincent Memorial United Methodist Church in Nutter Fort for more than 68 years.

Preceding her in death were her husband of nearly 60 years, Karl Henry Haslebacher; her five brothers, Henry Otto, Louis Fred, Ernest Gottlieb, Edward Emil and Bernard Otto Betler; and her three sisters, Anna Elsie Dulaney, Hazel Minnie McClellan and Agnes Alma Gooden.

Mabel is survived by her daughter, Brenda Kay (Haslebacher) Chapman; her son-in-law, Ed Chapman, her grandson Michael Scott Chapman and his wife, Jennifer Lea (Stacy), and their daughter, Madeline Stacy Chapman; her grandson, Eric Lee Chapman and his wife, Mary Rose (Tantalo) Chapman, and their children, Olivia Simone and Grant Patrick Chapman. Mabel is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Pauline Dyer, Agnes Haslebacher and Esther Weeks; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received at Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison St., Nutter Fort, Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at Amos Carvelli Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Cale presiding. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Maxel Dow Alt, 76, of Petersburg, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, in Grant Memorial Hospital.

D. Edward Zirkle

Daniel Edward "Eddie" Zirkle, 71, a resident of Mabie, departed this life Monday evening, Oct. 26, 2009, in the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington.

He was born Saturday, Sept. 3, 1938, at Rich Mountain, a son of the late Daniel Boone Zirkle and Emily Jane Shreve Zirkle.

Surviving are four sons, Daniel Edward Zirkle Jr. of Lorain, Ohio, Randall Lee Zirkle of Tucson, Ariz., Roger Alan Zirkle of Caldwell, Ohio, and Malcom Douglas Zirkle of Big Springs, Ky.; five brothers, Lloyd Jackson Zirkle and wife, Sue, Medina, Ohio, Raymond Neil Zirkle of Las Vegas, Nev., Junior Leon Zirkle of Florida James Lewis Zirkle of Mabie and Dana Zirkle of Mabie; four sisters, Betty Sturdivant and husband, Jack, of Mabie, Bertie Stone and husband, Vernon, of Newburg, Artie Shiflett and husband, Ronald, of Elkins and Emogene Simmons and husband, James, Elyria, Ohio, and and a special sister, Avah Phillips of Mabie.

Proceeding him in death were one brother, Andrew Jackson Zirkle; and two sisters, Edith Virginia Zirkle and Nellie Carver.

He attended Coalton High School, was a veteran of the U.S, Army, worked at Clark's Ashland for many years at Sandusky, Ohio, and worked at the Cracker Barrel at Pigeon Forge, Tenn. He attended the Rowan Memorial United Methodist Church and his dog, "Sally," was the love of his life.

Faith M. Gooden

Our perfect little angel, Faith Marie Gooden, infant daughter of Bruce W. Gooden and Clara M. Hinchman both of Tallmansville, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, in St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon.

She was born October 26, 2009.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by three sisters, Jerika Renee Rowan of Clarksburg, Kiara Casto and Justice Gooden both of Buckhannon; maternal grandparents, Roger and Karen Ours Hinchman of Buckhannon; paternal grandparents, Zane and Milda Kelley Gooden of Tallmansville; paternal great-grandmother, Myrtle Kelley of Tallmansville; first cousins, Roger Gooden II, Kayla Waugaman and Carissa Kelley and husband, Michael; uncle, Roger Gooden; aunt, Roberta Waugaman; and several other aunts, uncles and cousins.

Leah Nazelrod King Knotts, 85, a resident of Parsons, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009. She died peacefully at her home after battling with her declining health issues over the past few months.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home at Parsons Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Thursday, Oct. 29, at noon. The Rev. Pat Cassidy will officiate and interment will follow in Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons.

Margaret Crowson

Margaret Elizabeth Dudley Crowson, 90, a resident of Easy Street, Elkins, passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2009. at her home.

She was born Dec. 26, 1918, at Westville, Ill., a daughter of the late Sam and May Blanche Wolff Dudley.

She was married to Lester Crowson, who preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1995.

Surviving are one daughter, Pamela Crowson Dodds of Montrose; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death was one sister, May Blanche Dugas.

Mrs. Crowson moved to Washington, D.C., in 1944 to work as a civilian secretary for the U.S. Navy Department and for the Joint Chiefs of Staff during World War II. She married Lester Crowson in 1945 in Washington, D.C., and later worked as an executive secretary for various commissioners of the Federal Maritime Commission. Mrs. Crowson was an active volunteer at church through the years, helping as the church secretary and with the church nursery. While in Elkins, she attended the Calvary Baptist Church.

At the request of the deceased, her remains were cremated. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Calvary Baptist Church. Pastor Ralph Andrus will officiate and interment of the cremains will follow at a later date in the Salem-Seminole Baptist Cemetery in Desser, Ga.

Mildred B. Curtis

Mildred Bell Curtis, 96, of Route 3, Buckhannon, went home to be with her saviour on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009.

She was born Sept. 5, 1913, in Harrison County, a daughter of the late Isaac J. and Cora Bell Crislip Bell.

She was united in marriage, April 1, 1934, to Edgar William Curtis, who preceded her in death Jan. 15, 1965.

She is survived by two daughters, Beth LaVerne Hayes of Buckhannon and Coralie Thompson of Pennsylvania; one son, Michael Curtis and wife, Phyllis, of Weston; one brother, Clarence W. and wife, Betty Bell, of Buckhannon; one sister, Geraldine Ellison of Elkins; and 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Edgar Curtis; one grandson, Jimmy Dawson; and four sisters, Clarcie Taylor, Hazel Christenson, Merle Swisher and Edith Holden.

Mildred was the oldest lifetime member of the Light Chapel Church.

Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel today from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Ralph Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Peterson Cemetery at Weston.

Ruth S. Ellis

Ruth Sherrard Ellis, 89, of Buckhannon, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, in St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born Jan. 4, 1920, at Newark, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Anna Blanch Wickett and Henry Sherrard.

On March 24, 1945, she married Franklin C. "Hank" Ellis ,who survives.

She was preceded in death by her brother, George Sherrard; sister, Marjory Squires; and son-in-law, Jimmie Green.

Surviving are daughters, Cheri Green of Buckhannon and Jeanne Zickefoose and husband, Gary, of Bridgeport; and son, Franklin J. "Hank" Ellis and wife, Traci, of Bridgeport. Also surviving are grandchildren, Clint Green and wife, Aimee, of Buckhannon, Mindi McGrew and husband, Jason, of Scott Depot, Jon Green and wife, Holly, of Buckhannon, Shelli Lantz and husband, Eric, of Buckhannon, Capt. Greg Zickefoose of Little Rock, Ark., Capt. Brian Zickefoose and wife, Kim, of Lancaster, Pa., and Frankie D. Ellis and Olivia Anna Ellis of Bridgeport; and great-grandchildren, Madison, Delaney and Cheirdyn Green, Jack, Mitch and Rhett McGrew, Ava Lantz, Jimmie Green and Brianna and Meara Zickefoose.

Mrs. Ellis was a graduate of Newark High School and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College where she met her husband, Frank. She was a member of Alpha Z Delta sorority, the Wesleyan Emeritus Club and the First United Methodist Church of Buckhannon. Mrs. Ellis was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, who loved being with her family.

Friends will be received Friday, Oct. 30, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ron McCauley and the Rev. Billee Scott Mick officiating. Burial will follow in Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon.

Delmar Lambert

Delmar E. Lambert Sr., 85, a resident of Bowden, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2009, in the Hospice Care In-Patient Center in Elkins.

He was born Aug. 3, 1924, at Wymer, a son of the late Stelman and Laurie Davis Lambert.

On June 26, 1947, at Elkins, he was married to Opal Baker Lambert, who preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 2009.

Surviving are two sons, Delmar Lambert Jr. and wife, Rosemary, of Bowden and Harrison Lee Lambert and wife, Barbara, of Bowden; two daughters, Susie Bohan and Sandra Morrison and husband, Samuel, all of Elkins, a stepdaughter, Ruby Morrison of Rennex; one brother, Theodore Lambert and wife, Sharon, of Elkins; one sister, Lillian Border and husband, Marvin, of Ohio; and sisters-in-law, Hazel Lambert of Bowden, Sadie Lambert of Bemis and Mariam and Larry Hedrick of Brushy Run. Mr. Lambert attended the schools of Randolph County and was employed by Wilson Lumber Co. prior to his retirement.

Richard Hoover

Dr. Richard G. Hoover, 76, of Buckhannon, died at St. Joseph's Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009.

He was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Lewis County, a son of the late George Erve and Brenice Wimer Hoover.

He was united in marriage on Dec. 30, 1955, to Carolyn Daugherty Hoover, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Wiona and husband, Richard Anderson, of Marietta, Ohio, and Ramonda and husband, John Lipscomb, of Waynesburg, Pa.; daughter-in-law, Sherri Hoover of Buckhannon; eight grandchildren, Amanda Adams Slaven, Ryan Anderson, Kacy Anderson, Meagan Hoover, Richard G. "Trey" Hoover III, Haley Lipscomb, Brenna Lipscomb and Abigayle Lipscomb; two great-grandsons, Gavin and Ryder Slaven; one brother, Robert D. Hoover of New Milford; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard G. "Rick" Hoover II; one grandson, Richard Byron Adams; one brother, Raymond Hale Hoover; and an infant brother, George William Hoover.

Dr. Hoover was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Weston where he held several leadership positions and was a member of the United Methodist Men. He grew up attending the Straight Fork United Methodist Church. In his early life, he was a lay minister.

He graduated from Walkersville High School in 1950, and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Glenville State College in 1954. He completed his master's degree from West Virginia University and later obtained his doctorate degree in 1979.

He began his teaching career in Nicholas County where he taught at Dixie Grade School and continued to teach until becoming principal at New Hope, Finwick Mountain and Milltown schools. He worked for two years for the West Virginia Department of Education. In 1973, he went to Lewis County as principal of Weston Central Elementary School and in 1977, became the assistant superintendent in Lewis County. In 1985, he came to Upshur County as assistant superintendent where he later became superintendent and retired in 1999.

In addition, he taught for various colleges including Fairmont State, Glenville State, University of Charleston, WVU and West Virginia Wesleyan College as adjunct professor. He retired with 50.385 years of service in education.

He was a member of the Shriners of North America, the Grand Lodge of West Virginia AF & AM, the Franklin Lodge 7 Buckhannon, and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction, USA 32nd degree masonry. He was a member of Commandery No. 022 Knights Templar, Mt. Hope and Order of the Eastern Star, Buckhannon Chapter 18 where he was worthy patron. He was a member of the International Association Legions of Honor Osiris, the Upshur County Shuttle Patrol and the Lewis and Upshur County Shrine clubs. He was also a member of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masonry of West Virginia. He was awarded treasurer emeritus 2009 for his 18 years as treasurer. His lifetime dedication to the Masonic Lodge allowed him to belong to all three temples in West Virginia.

He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Buckhannon, Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598, Weston Lions Club and Alumni Association of Glenville State College and WVU. He was a member of the West Virginia Pioneer Travelers 200, Upshur County Farm Bureau, Upshur County Fair Board, Phi Delta Kappa and Retired Teachers' Association. He served on the Fred Eberle Administrative Board, was a member of the Buckhannon Chamber of Commerce and the Straight Fork Community Education Outreach Society. He was the King of Ireland's Irish Spring Festival.

In both his professional and personal life, he received awards and recognitions too numerous to mention. He loved his boyhood farm, raising cattle and bees and honking his horn at his neighbors as he passed to and from. Time never lessened his belief in Santa Claus, as he enjoyed many years playing "Santa's helper." He was a loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather, and a great friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Sunday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Nettles, the Rev. Dr. Joseph Shreve and the Rev. Dan Lowther officiating. Interment will follow in Wimer Cemetery. Franklin Lodge 7 AF & AM will conduct Masonic services at the graveside.

Carl Lipps, 77, of Route 2, French Creek, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at his home.

He was born March 30, 1932, in Braxton County, a son of the late Walter and Mae Singleton Lipps.

He is survived by two daughters, Denise Kiepper of Las Vegas, Nev., and Michelle Lipps of Warren, Ohio; one son, Mark Lipps of Ocean City, Md.; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Skalecki of Cleveland, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Lawrence, Delbert, Eugene, Kenna, Richard and Olen; and three sisters, Virginia, Marjorie and Madlene.

Graveside services will be today at 11 a.m. at the Rock Cave Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Heavner officiating.

Jimmie G. Frey, 79, a resident of 33 Tucker St. in Buckhannon, passed away at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at his residence.

He was born June 4, 1930, at Logan, a son of the late George and Molly (Smith) Frey.

He was united in marriage to his wife of 50 years, Patricia A. "Pat" Frey, who preceded him in death Feb. 21, 2004.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Virginia K. "Kay" and husband, Dennis Dean, of Crown Point, Ind.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kimberly A. Frey and wife, Elizabeth K., of Buckhannon, Kip D. Frey and wife, Ramona J., of Pineville and Kevin R. Frey and wife, Krista S., of Clarksburg; three granddaughters, Aimee Frederickson, Karly R. Frey and Kaitlin C. Frey; four grandsons, Doug Andrews, Jason A. Frey, Kody R. Frey and D.J. Frey; and five great-grandchildren, Dylan Frederickson, Zachary N. Andrews, Lauren G. Andrews, Bryce D. He was an honorary member of the Upshur County Emergency Squad.

Donald G. Gordon

Donald Gene Gordon, 69, a resident of Elkins, departed this life and went home to be with the Lord Thursday afternoon, Oct. 29, 2009, in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center at Clarksburg. He had been in declining health.

He was born Thursday, May 9, 1940, at Elkins, a son of the late Virgil Bradford Gordon and Vera Virginia Wamsley-Gordon.

He was married to the former Linda Lou Young, who survives. They celebrated 25 wonderful years of marriage.

Also surviving are two sons, Timothy Gene Gordon of Masontown, Pa., and David Harrold Gordon of Elkins; four daughters, Joyce Lynn Ridgway and husband, George "Frank," of Idamay, Debra Ann Schauman and husband, Bart, and Susan Kay Tacy and husband, Mickie, all of Elkins, and Karen Dawn Dagg and husband, Troy; one sister/niece, Linda Darlene Isner Scott and husband, Don, of Leesburg, Ga.; two nieces, Vickie Isner Hause and Terri Isner Coleman; one brother-in-law, Richard Lee Isner of Leesburg, Ga: two cousins, Evelyn Snodgrass of Elkins and Brenda Joyce "Joy" Wall Hostetler and husband, the Rev. Eli Hostetler, of Parsons; and 11 grandchildren and five great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by one brother, one sister and one grandson.

He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1958. He worked at several area places including the former Elkins Laundry, Elkins Taxi, Mental Health Center, Hopemont Sanitarium and was employed at Lynn's Gulf for the past 25 years. He also served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1958 to 1961. Don was also an avid "computer gamer" in his spare time. Don will not only be missed by his family and his wife, but also by his many friends. He will be in their hearts and thoughts forever.

Haymond D. Spicer

Haymond D. Spicer, 83, a resident of the Gateway Apartments, 8B, Elkins, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 in the Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 17, 1926, at Newville, a son of the late Dewey Spicer and the late Florence Gray Bright Spicer.

On July 4, 1947, in Elkins he married Lucille Skidmore Spicer, who survives in Elkins.

Also surviving are two sons, Harley "Robin" Spicer and Mark "Meatball" Spicer, both of Elkins. Two daughters, Patricia Ruth Hamrick and Elizabeth Diane Jackson both of Elkins; one brother, Hadren Spicer, Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Freda Tatterson, Fairmont, Lou Glenna Miller, Knightdale, N.C., Mary Nell Chafin, Fayetteville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding him in death was one son, Haymond Guy "Dog" Spicer; one brother, Hartzel Spicer; one sister, Gayola Spicer; and one daughter, Linda Lucille Spicer.

Haymond was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Cee Bee's serving during World War II. He was a member of the Red Men's Club, life member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was employed by Atlantic Seaboard Gas Co. and was one of the first employees of the Randolph County Emergency Squad where he retired with 20-plus years of service. He was an avid golfer, a West Virginia University Mountaineers fan and a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, from the funeral home chapel.

The Rev. Pam Schuman will officiate and interment will follow in the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Airport Road where full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Joan Stone

Joan Stone fought the fight, finished the course, kept the faith and arrived in the presence of God Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at her home, with her loving family by her side.

She was born Aug. 9, 1932, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Burl and Alice Wilson McCoy.

On Jan. 7, 1950, she married Paul L. Stone, who preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 2001.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert C. McCoy.

She is survived by three daughters, Tammy Lowther and husband, Stan, Terry Hamner and husband, Matt, and Kelly Daugherty and husband, Jim, all of Buckhannon; one son, David Stone of Mauldin, S.C.; one granddaughter, Jina Lowther; three grandsons, Josh and Joel Lowther and Levi Daugherty; one sister, Linda Coughlin and husband, Dave, of Buckhannon; sister-in-law, Lois McCoy of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

Joan was a homemaker and a member of the Living Word Church of God. She enjoyed gardening, painting and jewelry making. Her life revolved around her children and grandchildren but most of all serving the Lord. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and church family.

Friends will be received today from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Poling-St.Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Living Word Church of God with the Rev. Frank Spears officiating. Burial will follow in Buckhannon Veterans Cemetery in Buckhannon.

Margaret E. Crowson

Margaret Elizabeth Dudley Crowson, 90, a resident of Easy Street, Elkins, passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2009, at her home.

At the request of the deceased, her remains were cremated. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Calvary Baptist Church. Pastor Ralph Andrus will officiate and interment of the cremains will follow at a later date in the Salem-Seminole Baptist Cemetery in Desser, Ga.

Ruth L. Hoffner

Ruth Louise Hoffner, 81, passed away Oct. 29, 2009, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas.

At the request of the deceased her remains were cremated.

Memorial services will be at Courtland Acres Nursing Home Chapel, Thursday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. with Father Timothy Grassi officiating.
