Phyllis A. Winans

Mrs. Phyllis Arlene Winans, 59, a resident of 204 Hice St. in Belington, departed this life early Saturday morning Oct. 3, 2009, at her home. She had been in declining health for quite sometime but death was unexpected.

She was born April 19, 1950, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Harlen Snyder and Connie Lucille Waggy Sommerville.

Survivors include her loving husband of 15 years, Richard M. Winans of Belington; one daughter, Michelle Ramsey and husband, James, of Elkins; and three sons, Brad Ward and wife, Angie, of Parrish, Fla., Christopher Lewis of Hampton, Va., and Larry E. Lewis and wife, Tracy, of Winterville, N.C.

Also surviving are one brother, Henry Waggy of Elkins; one sister, Renee Mick and husband, Tom, of Hambleton; four grandchildren, Landon and Blake Lewis and Dallas and Morgan Ward; and her mother-in-law, Maretia Mollohan of Belington.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in by one brother, Harlen R. Snyder.

Phyllis had many interests. She enjoyed camping, decorating her yard and traveling down country roads with her mother. She loved playing cards with her friends, Margie Winans and Chris and Lowell Lambert. She was a homemaker, attended the schools of Randolph County and was a Protestant by faith.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington and again on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour when final rites will then be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Arden Beck officiating. Interment will follow in Talbott Cemetery near Belington.

Richard K. Dumire

Richard Keith Dumire, 84, of Elkins, passed away Oct. 3, 2009, at his home.

He was born Sept. 2, 1925, at Horse Shoe Run, a son of the late Charlie Walter and Mary Henline Dumire.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Eula Yvonne Dumire; one son, Richard Allen Dumire of Elkins; three daughters, Ella Mae Dumire (Jerry) of New Castle, Del., Janet L. (David) Canfield of Gilman and Shirley Thomas of Aurora; one stepson, Johnny Border; two stepdaughters, Reva (Gary) Wyatt and Debbie (JB) Kimble, all of Moundsville; one brother, Odus Dumire and one sister, Mildred Sturms, both of Elkins; 23 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Buddy and Paul Dumire; four sisters, Luzella Fike, Faith Dumire, Ruby Selders and Pauline Leary; and two granddaughters, two nephews and two nieces.

Richard loved working with the Parson Fire Department. He enjoyed camping with family and friends. He always loved being a father, and his kids always came first. God is getting a good man.

Friends were received Sunday at Hinkle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Walter Blough officiating. Interment will follow in Accident Cemetery at Eglon.

Audry Leichliter

Audry R. Leichliter, 85, of Route 1, French Creek, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, in St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born June 26, 1924, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late William and Eva Tenney Tuning.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Leichliter, who died Jan. 5, 1998.

She is survived by three sons, Gary and wife, Charlotte Leichliter, of French Creek, Donald Junior and wife, Jody Leichliter, of Rock Cave and Russell Dale and wife, Libby Leichliter, of French Creek; one daughter, Donna J. Hofer and husband, Ernest, of Helvetia; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Opal Andrews of Elkins and Virginia Kelley of Buckhannon.

She was preceded in death by one son, Lonnie; one daughter; Wanda; one brother, Earl Tuning; and one sister, Willa Hull.

Mrs. Leichliter was a member of the Rock Cave Baptist Church.

Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The body will be moved to the Rock Cave Baptist Church on Wednesday, Oct. 7, where she will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour, with Pastor David Jessie and Pastor Eugene Helmick officiating. Interment will follow in Pickens IOOF Cemetery.

Carleton Harper

Carleton Keith Harper, 74, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Saturday afternoon, Oct. 3, 2009, in the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center.

He was born Saturday, Feb. 23, 1935, at Harman, a son of the late Grover Carleton Harper and Elsie Zula Teter Harper.

He had been married to the former Anna Jennings Harper of Omaha, Neb.

Also surviving are two sons, Keith Harper, and fiance, Tracy, of Elkins and Rodney Harper and wife, Katie, of Harman; one daughter, Peggy Bennett and husband, Ronnie, of Harman; one brother, Grover Harper and wife, Alice, of Harrisonburg, Va.; five sisters, Janie Ours and husband, Danie, of Harman, Karen Murphy and husband, Murl, Linda Rogers and husband, Jeff, Sherry Morris and husband, Lonnie, and Sandy Englehart and husband, Hans, all of Virginia;and six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were one brother, Randall Harper; and two sisters, Phyllis Paugh and Joyce Barrix.

Carleton was a graduate of Harman High School, had worked all of his life as a truck driver for Hinkle Trucking and Kessler Trucking and was a member of the Harman Church of the Brethren.

Mr. Harper's request for cremation was honored. A graveside service will be conducted at a later date.

Dr. Thomas R. Ross

Dr. Thomas Richard Ross, 90, a well known professor of history Emeritus and Dean of the Faculty Emeritus at Davis & Elkins College and a resident of Kerens Hill, Elkins, departed this life Thursday afternoon, Oct. 1, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

The family received friends Monday at Halliehurst Hall on the Davis & Elkins College Campus. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, Dr. Ross will be moved to the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church where final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Peter A. Arvie C. Canfield

Arvie Clyde Canfield, 88, of Augusta, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at his home.

Born on Oct. 16, 1920, at Elkins, he was the son of the late Arvie Lee and Ressie G. Shoemaker Canfield.

He worked as a carpenter. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1101 in Romney.

Surviving are four sons, Norman J. Canfield of Louisa, Va., Lee J. Canfield of Warrenton, Va., Terry R. Canfield of Augusta and Bruce A. Canfield of Pine Allas Park, Fla.; two daughters, Janet L. Canfield of Pine Allas, Fla., and Samantha M. Lutherener of Clear Water, Fla.; three sisters, Addie Wood of Three Churches, Lorraine Lawson of Bealton, Va., and Geraldine Brinsfield of San Diego, Calif.: 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in the McKee Funeral Home in Augusta with David Bradfield, minister, officiating. Interment will be in Canfield Cemetery at Elkins.

Glory L. Pritt

Glory "Gladys" Louise Cutright Pritt, 74, of Mill Creek, departed this life Sept. 30, 2009, at he son's home in Valley Grove.

Gladys was born June 29, 1935, a daughter to the late Cecil and Margie Cutright.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Pritt; and one daughter, Ginger Hoffman.

She is survived by six sons, Michael Pritt and wife, Patty, of Valley Grove, David Pritt and wife, Beverly, of Kentucky, Ronnie Pritt and Greg Pritt and wife, Catheryn, all of Mill Creek, Steven Pritt and Cecil Pritt and wife, Melanie, all of Elkins; and one daughter, Pamela Sayre of Virginia. Surviving brothers are Cletis Cutright, Gary Cutright and Denny Cutright; and surviving sisters include Beatrice White and Lorraine Schoonover, all of Mill Creek.

Preceding her in death were one brother, Hartford Cutright; and two sisters, Evelyn Cutright and Delores Vance.

Gladys had many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who she loved very much. She loved her family and friends and lived life to the fullest. She was a volunteer at the Tyrand Cooperative Ministries in Mill Creek where she made many friends. Gladys loved to travel and visited many beautiful places during her life. She was a fan of all types of music and live music concerts. She loved to spend time with her family and friends and enjoyed helping others in need. Her love of music and family carried her through her illness and allowed for her a peaceful passing.

Gladys' wishes were to be cremated and the crematory services were provided by Kepner Funeral Homes of Elm Grove.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, and a dinner will follow at the Mill Creek United Methodist Church in Mill Creek with Pastor Bonnie Starkey officiating. All family and friends are welcome to attend. From 7 Oct 2009.

Paul A. Shupp

Paul A. Shupp, 96, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Wednesday morning, Oct. 7, 2009 , in Mansfield Place at Philippi.

He was born Friday, Sept. 12, 1913, at Jacksonburg, a son of the late George A. Shupp and Eliza LeMaster Shupp.

On Nov. 15, 1938, he was married to the former Elsie Madeline Plum, who preceded him in death in November 1973.

Surviving are three sons, Ralph Roger Shupp of Greensburg, Pa., Mitchell Leroy "Mickey" Shupp and wife, Sandra, of Philippi and James Dale Shupp and wife, Brenda, of Herdon, Va.; three grandchildren, Michael Lee Shupp of Morgantown, Roger Randall Shupp and wife, Carol, of Texas, and Tamala Christine Wilson and husband, Randy, of Swanson, Md.; and five great-grandchildren.

He is the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Charlie and Andy Shupp; and one sister Bertie Shupp.

He was a construction worker and a former employee of the International Labor Union, retiring after 50 years of service.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons Friday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Pat Cassidy will officiate and interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows.

Annie B. Stihler

Anne B. Stihler, 88, of Elkins, formerly of Monroe, Mich., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, in the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center in Elkins.

Anne was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Westmoreland County, Pa., the daughter of the late Theodore and Anna Bazuk Rafko.

On Feb. 8, 1947, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroe, Mich., Anne married her beloved husband, Clarence W. Stihler. He preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 1989.

During World War II, Anne worked at the Monroe Auto Equipment Co. and later in life sold Avon products. Most of her life, Anne was a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her family. Anne was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Monroe, Mich. Anne was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and enjoyed reading and various types of crafts such as woodworking, quilting, stained glass and ceramics.

Anne is survived by her two loving children, Craig (Christine) Stihler, whom she made her home with in Elkins, and Scott (Cherie) Stihler of Fairbanks, Alaska.

In addition to her parents and husband, Anne was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose, Helen and Mary; and three brothers, Charles, Buck and John.

Visitation will be today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Road in Monroe, Mich., where a scripture service will be conducted at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Oct.10, she will lie in state at St. Mary's Catholic Church from 12:30 p.m. until the Mass of the Resurrection celebrating her life at 1 p.m. Fr. Marc Gawronski, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Billy J. Phillips

Mr. Billy Joe Phillips, 77, a resident of Valley Bend, passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 7, 2009, in the Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department.

He was born June 15, 1932, at Kerens, a son of the late Herman Phillips and the late Erma Wood Baughman.

He was married to Lillian Tucker Phillips, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Diana Lynn Medlin and husband, Kevin, of Florida; three stepsons, Darryl Phillips, Rick Taylor and Randy Patrick and wife, Madonna; two stepdaughters, Sharon Schutte and husband, Rick, and Karon Nichols and husband, Louie; and one grandson, Austin Medlin and wife, Chelsea.

Mr. Phillips was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School and attended West Virginia University during 1951 and 1952. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having obtained the rank of staff sergeant and was employed as a business representative for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union in California, at the time of his retirement. He was a member of the Landmark Baptist Church in Elkins.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Mark Houser officiating. Interment will follow in the Mingo Cemetery.

The Rev. Ed Null, 75, of Upper Tract, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at his home.

Ellen F. Dolly

Ellen Flint Dolly, 95, a resident of Valley Bend, departed this life Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, 2009, in Nella's Nursing Home at Crystal Springs.

She was born Sunday March 22, 1914, at Beverly, a daughter of the late Charles L. Flint and Alice Bell Weese Flint. Ellen was reared by Charlie and Hattie Kittle.

On June 5, 1938, at Monterey, Va., she was married to Clifford Mack "Sim" Dolly Sr., who survives at Valley Bend.

Also surviving are two sons, Clifford M. "Bob" Dolly Jr. of Elkins and Charles E. Dolly and wife, Laura, of Fairmont; two daughters, Jo Ellen Parsons of Elkins and Linda Sue Isner and husband, Asher, of Beverly; eight grandchildren, John Parsons and wife, Amy, Jay Parsons and wife, Lorraine, Robin Dolly and wife, Tammy, Ashley Isner, Mandy Isner and fiancee, Brian, Jason Isner and wife, Jessie, Chad Dolly and Charla Secreto and husband, Frank; six great-grandchildren, Grace Parsons, Meghan and Allison Dolly, Jacob Isner and Jared and Justin Parsons; and one nephew, Tommy Kittle and wife, Jean, of Ohio.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death were three brothers, Len and Herbert Flint and one infant; one sister, Hattie Kittle; one brother-in-law, Charlie Kittle; one son-in-law, James F. Parsons; two nieces, Audrey Kittle Pingley and Marguerite Kittle Scott; and one nephew, Junior Kittle.

She was a graduate of Beverly High School with the class of 1932 and Davis & Elkins College with the class of 1939. She was an educator working for the Randolph County Board of Education for 35 years and the last 20 years at the Homestead School from which she retired in 1980.

She was an avid reader and she and her husband traveled extensively. She was the longest survivor of the Homestead of Valley Bend.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel Sunday, Oct. 11, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Raymond G. Godwin will officiate and interment will follow in Mount Vernon Cemetery at Beverly.

M. Pete Koerner

Major Morgan Pete Koerner, 76, passed away Oct. 7, 2009 in Charleston General Hospital.

He was born Oct. 20, 1932, at Helvetia.

"Pete" Koerner, as most called him, was a veteran of the Korean War and dedicated more than 31 years of his life to the West Virginia State Police. Pete Koerner retired from the West Virginia State Police in 1987 as a member of the departments senior staff and holding the rank of major.

Pete had lived with his wife of 53 years, Jaunita B. Koerner, in the Buckhannon and Elkins areas of West Virginia for the last 20 years. Pete was an active member of the Christian Fellowship Church of Buckhannon, the Gideons, West Virginia State Police Retired Members Association, a was a 50-year member of the Minerva Masonic Lodge 13 in Barboursville.

In addition, Pete was a former member of the Lions Club and assisted with Meals on Wheels serving the Buckhannon area.

He was a generous, loving devout Christian and a wonderful husband, father and friend.

Pete was preceded in death by his father and mother, Paul and Myrtle Koerner; his sister and brother in-law, Pauline and Bud Hensil; and sister in-law, Shirley Koerner.

Pete Koerner is survived by his wife, Jaunita B. Koerner of Winfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Ralph Larue of Huntington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Jackie Koerner of Elmira, N.Y., Calvin and Toni Koerner of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Paul and Cara Koerner of Winfield. Pete had 10 grandchildren, Maria and Blake Cicenas, Joshua Larue, Rosemary Larue, Amanda Koerner, Alexis Koerner, Lani Koerner, Morgan Koerner, and Adam, Hanna and Caleb Koerner. In addition, Pete is survived by his brother, Elwood Koerner of Helvetia; sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Stan Maienknecht of Sardis, Ohio; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mattie and Ken Ogden of Buckhannon; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Chris and Tom Lambert of Lafayette, La.; sister-in-law, Carolyn Alverez of Pennsylvania; and last but not least his buddy and pal, Duke.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at Chapman Funeral Home in Hurricane with the Rev. J. Edward McDaniels and the Rev. John Koerner officiating.

Burial will be in Forestlawn Memorial Gardens at Huntington with military honors conducted by the James E. Marshall Post 187, Winfield.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pete will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but will be reunited in heaven with those who have accepted Jesus as their Savior and Lord.

Paul A. Shupp, 96, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Wednesday morning, Oct. 7, 2009 , in Mansfield Place at Philippi.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons today from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Pat Cassidy will officiate and interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows.
