Bertha M. Plyler

Bertha Marie (Fitch) Plyler, 82, of Bartow, passed away Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

She was the daughter of the late Benjamin L. and Geneva Rexrode Hoover.

She was married Jan. 6, 1945 to Luther Oren Plyler, who preceded her in death.

Also, preceding her in death were her sons, Stephen Luther Plyler and Larry B. Plyler, as well as two sisters and one brother.

Left to cherish her memories are her grandson, Stephen Todd Plyler and wife, Lisa, of Coopersburg, Pa.; daughter-in-law Phyllis Patterson and husband, Pete, of Martinsburg; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Plyler of Waynesboro, Va.; two granddaughters, Melissa Sprock and husband, Hank, of Waynesboro, Va., and Amanda Kelso and husband, Wesley; and four sisters, Patricia Hiner and husband, Richard, of Durbin, Violet (Tom) Ryder of Boyer, Barbara "Susie" Murphy and husband, Frank, of Boyer and Betty Jo Lovelace of Dunmore.

Also surviving are six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Bertha (Fitch) Plyler was the former owner of Central Cafe for more then 40 years. She was a very dedicated member of the Durbin United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir and the United Methodist Women.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Cass Chapter 124.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Durbin United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association.

Visitation with the family will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m., at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale. Pastor Frank Naglic will be officiating. Catherine Bolinger

Catherine Josephine Huffman Bolinger, 84, a resident of Hendricks, departed this life early Sunday morning, Aug. 23, 2009, at her home. She had been in declining health since May.

She was born Tuesday, Oct.7, 1924, at Hendricks, a daughter of the late Cam Lakin Huffman and Martha Snyder Huffman.

On May 17, 1941, at Oakland, Md., she was married to Clarence Russell Bolinger Sr., who preceded her in death Nov. 16, 2001. They had celebrated 61 years of marriage.

Surviving are three sons, Clarence R. "John" Bolinger Jr. and wife ,Donna, of Hendricks, Lakin Lee Bolinger and wife, Slona, and Richard "Dick" Bolinger and wife, Willetta, all of Parsons; seven daughters, Betty Jean Hebb of Ohio, Virginia Mae Carr and husband, Lowell, of Hendricks, Flodie Louise Lawrence of Hendricks, Sandra Kay Pennington and husband, Larry, of Hendricks, Grace Ann Lee and husband, Carl, of Maryland, Ruby Jeanette McCrum and husband, Mike, of Parsons and Mary Frances Booth and husband, Daniel, of Mackeyville; and 19 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and James Huffman; three sisters, Ina Huffman, Nadine Losh and Mable Moyers; one great-granddaughter, Abby; and son-in-law, Philip Hebb.

She attended the school at Hendricks.

She worked for the former Parsons Nursery. She was an avid West Virginia University Mountaineer and Chicago Cubs fan and one of her favorite pastimes was watching wrestling.

There will be no visitation. Private graveside services will be conducted Tuesday in the Fansler Cemetery at Hendricks. The Rev. Harley DeLeurere and Adam Snyder will officiate and interment will follow.

Jeffrey S. Carr

Jeffrey Steven Carr, 54, of Davis, passed away Aug. 23, 2009. following an extended battle with cancer.

He was born May 5, 1955, at Elkins, a son of Elmer James and Margaret Lou Kyle Carr.

Also surviving are his wife, Sandra S. Carr; three brothers, Danny (Mary) Carr of Grundy, Va., Ray (Paula) Carr of Fairmont and Alan (Karen) Carr of Severn, Md.; and one sister, Lou Ann (Larry) Jenkin of Lexington, N.C.

Jeff was employed as a welder in the Virginia shipyards and most recently at Mt. Storm Power Plant. He enjoyed working on vehicles and being outdoors in the woods.

At the request of the deceased his remains were cremated.

Friends will be received Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Hinkle Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Todd Rhodes will officiate.

Lisha R. Warner

Lisha Ruth Nash Warner, 48, a resident of Route 1, Volga, passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, in St. Joseph Hospital. S

he was born March 14, 1961, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Mason and Ruth Ann (Symonds) Payne.

Surviving are one daughter; Brittany N. Warner of Buckhannon; one son; Jonathan W. and wife, Akiko Nash, of Doha, Qatar; two sisters; Zana and husband, Naaman Welch, of Volga and Judy and husband, Mack Metz, of Buckhannon; three brothers; Ernie and wife, Vivian Payne, Masie and wife, Sandy Payne, both of Volga and David Payne of Buckhannon; one granddaughter; Ria Nash; and several nieces and nephews

Ms. Warner was a caretaker and enjoyed cooking and baking.

Ms. Warner request for cremation will be honored. Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi today 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Carol Duffield officiating.

Mary V. Simmons

Mary Virginia Simmons, 85, a resident of Terra Alta, passed away at 6:15 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, in Hopemont Hospital.

She was born Dec. 15, 1923, at Huttonsville, a daughter of the late George Washington Simmons and Anna Mae Swecker Simmons.

She was never married.

Surviving are four brothers, Carl, Clyde, Elden and Fred Simmons, all of Elkins and one sister, Mrs. Paul (Georgia) Shiflett of Elkins.

Preceding her in death was one brother, Wilson Simmons.

Private burial will be in the Mill Creek Cemetery.

Shirley Jean Hinchman Wooddell, 72, a resident of the Faulkner Community, Elkins, departed this life Thursday afternoon, Aug. 20, 2009, at her home.

Virginia K. Painter

Virginia Kratzer Painter, 98, formerly of this city, passed away Aug. 10, 2009, in Venice, Fla.

Virginia was born in Elkins on Feb. 9, 1911 and graduated from Elkins High School in 1928 and attended Davis & Elkins College.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Lee Henderson and son-in-law, Charles D. Henderson of Venice, Fla., with whom she made her home.  From 24 Aug 2009.

De Sales Lothes, 89, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 11:05 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

Dorothy Lanham

Dorothy Lanham, 68, a resident of Montrose, passed away at 11:55 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 17, 1940, at Marlinton, the daughter of the late Lovie Shafer Mace.

On Nov. 7, 1957, at Mill Creek, she was married to Cecil H. Lanham, who survives.

Also surviving are four sons, Kevin Lanham and wife, Janet, of Midlothian, Texas, Ronald Lanham and wife, Diane, of Montrose, Gregory Lanham and wife, Debi, of Harper and Christopher Lanham and wife, Rachel, of Jackson, Mich. Nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Cornell.

Dorothy was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School. She worked most of her life as an executive secretary and last worked as a chiropractic assistant to Dr. Morgan Jones.

She was a member of the Harrison Community Church.

Gregory L. Brake

Mr. Gregory Lane Brake, 54, a resident of the Crystal Springs Community, Elkins, passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born Jan. 14, 1955, at Elkins, a son of the late Kenneth Lane Brake and the late Margaret Mae Everett Brake Swecker.

He had never married.

Surviving are four brothers, Chaplain Randall Jackson Brake and Kathy of Elkins, Phillip Wayne Brake of Berkley Springs, Gary Lee Kisner of Parsons and Elmer Allen Kisner Jr. of St. Marys. Two sisters, Juanita Louise Lee and Kevin of Virginia Beach, Va., and Angela Marie Swecker of Elkins also survive.

Also preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his maternal grandparents, Emory and Florna Everett; and paternal grandparents, Leonard Jackson Brake and Neva Blanche Brake.

Greg attended the schools of Randolph County and was employed in food service at Davis & Elkins College.

DeSales S. Lothes

DeSales S. Lothes, 89 , a long time resident of Elkins, passed away Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

She was born Jan. 28, 1920, at Coalton, a daughter of the late John B. Shreve and the late Rachael C. Patterson Shreve.

On Oct. 15, 1936, she was united in marriage to Wilfred J. Lothes, who preceded her in death.

Also preceding her in death were one brother, Dr. William Shreve; and one grandson, Stephen J. Lothes.

Surviving are two sons, Wilfred F. Lothes and wife, Gail, of Ellamore and retired Maj. John E. Lothes and wife, Wilga, of Elkins; and three daughters, Mary C. Cacase of Elkins, Margaret "Sunny" Austin of Elkins and Julia Corder and husband, Bill, of Junior. Fifteen grandchildren, Yvonne Marson and husband, Harry, Frances M. White, Brian Lothes and wife, Rita, Maria Hall and husband, Ron, Rebecca G. Hempe and husband, David, Capt. Wilga C. Lothes, J. Christopher Lothes, Minta D. Lothes, Ramona A. Johnson and husband, Keith, James E. Lothes, Jasmine Austin, Anthony Cacase and wife, Nadia, John E. Lothes II, Matthew Corder and fiance, Sara Coberly, and Eric Corder; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews including a very special loved one, Becky Miller, also survive.

DeSales held various clerical positions in Randolph County including accounting, bookkeeping, payroll and secretarial duties and as a nurse's aide at Davis Memorial Hospital. She was employed by Works Progress Administration, Showker Brothers Produce Co., Central Meat Market, City Restaurant and for more than 25 years was employed by the West Virginia Division of Highways.

She was very active in the Elkins community and St. Brendan Catholic Church. At St. Brendan Church, she was a Eucharistic Minister, member of the Parish Council, member of the Holy Rosary Guild, taught CCD classes, visited the ill and homebound parishioners and was a member of the Altar Society and the Catholic Women's Club. For years, she acquired and arranged the altar flowers for the weekend services and was a frequent reader at Saturday, Sunday and holy day Masses. She was a member of the Church Women United and volunteered at Catholic Community Services.

In the Elkins Community, she was a member of the Democratic Women's Organization, a volunteer at the Good Shepherd Clothing Center and was involved with Beta Alpha Beta Honorary Business Fraternity at Davis & Elkins College. In 1977, she was named Beta Alpha Beta Secretary of the Year and in 2000, she received the Gordon E. Hermanson Award for dedicated service to Davis & Elkins College.

At the request of the deceased, her remains were cremated. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Elkins. A Wake Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday from the church with the Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs VF as the presider. A Memorial Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, from St. Brendan Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs VF as the presider. Interment of the cremains will follow in St. Brendan Catholic Cemetery.

Eugene William Evans, 77, of Moorefield, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, in Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Anna M. Bennett

Anna Marie (Whetzel) Bennett, 84, of Moorefield, died Thursday at the Grant County Nursing Home

Family will receive friends today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Moorefield Church of God with Pastor Glenden Berg officiating. Burial will be private in Potomac Memorial Gardens in Keyser.  From 29 Aug 2009. 

Darrell Bennett

Darrell Bennett, 68, of Dodson Run Road, Beverly, entered into eternal rest Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, in Hospice Care Center at Elkins.

He was born Tuesday, May 6, 1941, at Beverly, a son of the late Edward and Cora Collins Bennett.

He attended the schools of Randolph County. He was Baptist by faith. He was a lifelong resident of Beverly who enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors. Darrell was very proud of his 38 years as a fireman with the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department in Beverly.

On Sunday, Dec. 24, 1961, in Oakland, Md., he married the former Janet Brock, who survives in Beverly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Wilma Bennett Lane; and three brothers. Wilson, Donnie and Charles Bennett.

Darrell's survivors include his wife, Janet Brock Bennett of Beverly; one daughter, Melanie Bennett Dilley and husband, Ron, of Beverly; two nieces who were like daughters, Marsha K. Cooper of Montrose and Charlene Douglas of Beverly; special family friend, Martha Farish of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Joyce A. Butcher and husband, Richard, of Colonial Heights, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Inpatient Care Unit of Elkins, 169 Diamond St., Elkins, W.Va. 26241.

In keeping with Darrell's wishes, he will be honored with a fireman's funeral. The funeral procession will leave The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 100 Meadow Lane, Valley Bend at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, en route to Beverly Cemetery in Beverly, where graveside services will be conducted at 11a.m. with the Rev. Marshall Williams officiating.

Donald McCrary

Donald Lee McCrary, 69, of Winifrede, and formerly of Mill Creek, went to be with the Lord at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at home following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. McCrary was born Sept. 19, 1939, at Charleston, the son of Virgil and Gladys Ranson McCrary.

Surviving is his companion of 23 years, Shirley Woods of Winifrede. Also surviving are his former wife, Vickie Taylor Louk of Mill Creek; one son, Mark and wife, Jennifer, of Valley Bend; daughters, Andrea Zezima and husband, Anthony, of Corinth, Maine, Donna Taylor of Elkins, Lora Bolinder and husband, Michael of Beverly, Rebecca Barton of Mill Creek and Roberta Armstrong and husband, Victor, of Mill Creek; one stepdaughter, Terri Mullins and husband, Frank, of Winifrede; and 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his only brother, Phillip.

Donald was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Germany in the 1950s. He loved to fish and grill out and spend time with his family at Stuart Park, his favorite place. Donald was much loved and will be sadly missed, but will remain in our hearts forever.  From 29 Aug 2009. 

Elvin G. Kreider

Dr. Elvin Groff Kreider, 72, a resident of Philippi passed away Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 19, 1937, in Paradise, Pa., a son of the late Paul and Mary (Groff) Kreider.

He was united in marriage June 30, 1962, to Maribeth (Messner) Kreider, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Brenda Witmer and husband, Gerald, of Harrisonburg, Va., and Karen Markle and husband, Brian, of Reston, Va.; two sons, Kenny Kreider and wife, Kim, of Morgantown and Steve Kreider and wife, Becky, of Philippi; one brother, Lloyd Kreider of Strasburg, Pa.; six grandchildren, Autumn, Adam, Ben, Sophie, Levi and Riley.

Dr. Kreider was a graduate of Eastern Mennonite College and earned his medical degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. He has worked as the primary pediatrician and allergist in Philippi for over 30 years, with his medical practice based in Myers Clinic. Dr. Kreider also assisted as instructor in the PA Graduate program at Alderson-Broaddus College. He was a founding member of the Philippi Mennonite Church in Philippi and enjoyed family times, hunting and spending time outdoors.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to the staff of Ruby Memorial Hospital, Hospice Care staff for the kindness and care shown, and prayers, thoughts and all other assistance provided by friends and family.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 30, the family will be present from 8 a.m. to noon. Dr. Kreider will be moved to Wilcox Chapel at Alderson-Broaddus College to lie in state from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. with Pastor Lester Lind officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. At the request of the family, the casket will be closed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to local or national charities focused on the needs of children (Easter Seals, United Way, St. Jude Hospital, Heiffer, Project, etc. are encouraged). Helen A. Robey

Helen A. Davis Cooper Robey, 81, of Fairmont, died on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at the Arbors at Fairmont Nursing Center.

She was born in Elkins on July 5, 1928 a daughter of the late Thomas Vene Davis Sr. and Opal Elizabeth Ray Davis.

Helen was preceded in death by her two husbands, Burley A. Cooper, who passed away in 1970, and L. Leroy "Bud" Robey, who passed away in 2005.

She graduated from Elkins High School. In addition, Helen completed certification to become a licensed practical nurse. While living in Elkins, she worked at the Golden Clinic. After moving to Fairmont, she was employed at Smith Produce and retired from A&P Printing/Creative Labels.

She was a dedicated homemaker and mother. Helen worked hard and enjoyed a full, active life. Her interests included: quilting, cross-stitching, embroidery and various crafts. She enjoyed working on the farm with her husband Leroy Robey, gardening, raising cattle and horses.

She is survived by her son, Burley "Bamby" Cooper and his wife, Cherly, of Fairmont; her daughters, Dona Shaw and her husband, William, of Fairmont and Tonya Marks and her husband, Willie, of Merritt Island, Fla.; her sister Anna Belle Bright of Fort Collins, Colo.; two grandchildren Jessica Marks of Merritt Island, Fla., and Matthew Marks and his wife, Christy, of Merritt Island, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Hailey Marks, Kory Marks and Deven Austin Frederick.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her brother Tommy D. Davis Jr.

Friends and family may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Ken Wright officiating.

In keeping with the wishes of the deceased, her body will be cremated after the service.

Wayne Schoonover

Wayne Elmer Schoonover, 77, a resident of Elkins, passed away Thursday evening, Aug. 27, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He fought a courageous battle with leukemia for the past six years.

He was born Dec. 12, 1931, at Elkins, a son of the late Clarence Schoonover and the late Lillian Moore Schoonover Wood.

On Sept.15, 1952, he was united in marriage to the former Marie Teter, who survives in Elkins. The Schoonover's would have celebrated 57 years of marriage on Sept. 15 of this year.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Schoonover and fiance, Jean Burgman, of Morgantown and Brian Schoonover and wife, Jeanette, of Wallace; two daughters, Karen Lovellette of Millsboro, Del., and Tammy Coen of Denton, Texas; and a daughter-in-law, Lauren Rolle and husband, Ray. Seven grandchildren, William Coonts, Stacy Ogden, Michael Nicholson, Leslie Schoonover, Matthew, Rebekah and Sarah Schoonover; and five great grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding him in death was one son, Kenneth Lee Schoonover, who died April 18, 1995.

Wayne was a Protestant by faith and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, but most of all, the many hours he enjoyed watching deer and other animals in his backyard. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He retired from Monongahela Power Co. as a lineman after nearly 30 years of service. Prior to his employment with Monongahela Power, he was employed by S.W. Jack Drilling Co. and Ray Brothers Drilling Co. In addition to several other jobs, he worked at Goodyear Aircraft in Akron, Ohio.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ron Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Airport Road.
