Barbara Huffman

Barbara Ann Hinkle-Huffman, 57, passed away Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland, Md.

Barb was born Sept. 6, 1951, at Harman.

She is survived by her husband, Harvey Huffman; mother, Anna May Hinkle of Hambden Township, Ohio; father-in-law, Rob Huffman of Dryfork; children, Dr. David M. Hinkle (Lekha Hota, Md.) of Watertown, Mass., Allan Huffman (Amy) of Maysville and Patricia Thompson (Steve) of Dryfork; and grandchildren, Nathin, Ilesa, Stacie, Tess, Skyler, Micah and Karlie Beth. Two sisters remain, Elaine and Charlotte ("Charlie" and Donnie), all of Hambden Township, Ohio; brother-in-law, Bob Huffman (Ruby); sister-in-law, Kathy Marra (John).

Barb's father, Russell Layne Hinkle; and grandparents, Russell B. Hinkle, Nuda (Cooper) Hinkle, Carney Bill Harper and Sylva Harper (Teter) are deceased.

Mrs. Huffman retired from Grant County schools in 2008, having taught 33 years in Ohio and in Randolph, Tucker and Grant counties. She was a graduate of Willoughby South High in Ohio, Ohio State University and West Virginia University with a master's degree in education. She was active in her church, played the piano at both church and school and was a founding member of the Harman library. She was a loving, caring and generous person who will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Barbara was a believer in Jesus Christ and is now in heaven her Lord.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Dryfork Assembly of God on Route 32 in Dryfork. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the church with the Revs. Brian Hipp and Rick Lewellen officiating. Burial will follow in Flanagan Hill Cemetery on Route 72 in Red Creek.

The family suggest that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to either the Pioneer Library in Harman or to the Canaan Valley Volunteer Fire Department in Canaan Valley. Hinkle Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.  From 3 Aug 2009. 

Billie C. Lynch

Billie C. Lynch, 73, of Kesling Mills community, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born Jan. 15, 1936, at Webster Springs, a son of the late Robert and Ethel Carpenter Lynch.

On Aug. 2, 1958, he married Lois Conklin, who preceded him in death on June 7, 1984.

Also preceding him in death were two sons, Robert and Billie Lynch; and one grandson, Nicholas Cartright.

He is survived by two sons, Donald Lynch and wife, Jennifer, of Buckhannon and Charlie Lynch of Kesling Mill; two daughters, Barbara Cartright and husband, Randy, of Fishing Creek, Md., and Michele Burton and husband, Eric, of Buckhannon; four grandsons, Kyle Cartright of Fishing Creek, Nanthaniel Lynch of Buckhannon, Keegan Adkins of Buckhannon and Ryan Cartright of Fishing Creek; four granddaughters, Stephanie Burton of Bridgeport, Samantha Burton of Bridgeport, McKayla Lynch of Buckhannon and Ashley Lynch of Buckhannon; one sister, Anna Dodrill of Humboldt, Iowa; two stepsisters, Linda Frame of Ohio, and Beatrice Hamrick of Ohio; and a special friend, Pheba Minix of Buckhannon.

Mr. Lynch had been a gas meter reader and was a member of the Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598.

Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Tuesday, Aug.t 4, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jim Burton officiating. Burial will follow in the Joe McCourt Cemetery near Webster Springs.

Elsie L. Warner

Mrs. Elsie L. Warner, 93, of Riverton, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 in Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

She was born Nov. 14, 1915, at Bowden, the daughter of the late Andrew C. Smith and Zettie Ware Smith.

She was a homemaker and a member of Valley Chapel United Methodist Church.

On Jan. 11, 1939, she married Gale J. Warner, who preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 2000.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Rader of Beverly; four sons, Richard G. and wife, Ruth Warner, of Franklin, Robert and wife, Wanda Warner, of Daleville, Va., Carroll and wife, Eleanor Warner, of Riverton and Jerry W. Warner of Baton Rouge, La.; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Smith of Hurricane; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by one son, Dale Smith.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with the Rev. Barbara Rexrode and Richard Warner officiating. Burial will be in North Fork Memorial Cemetery at Riverton.

Helen M. Setzer

Helen Marie Setzer went home to Heaven to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ, Friday, June 19, 2009, after a long period of declining health. She was a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

Funeral services were conducted by her son-in-law, the Rev. Keith Miller, in her home state of North Carolina Tuesday, June 23, 2009. She was laid to rest beside her husband U. Gene Setzer.

Mrs. Setzer is survived by her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Courtney (Maude) Youngs; two daughters, Mrs. Keith (Jackie) Miller of Beverly and Mrs. Rudy (Frances) Watson of Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren, Mrs. Danny (Heather) Davis, Eugene Baker, Aaron Watson and Benjamin Watson; and one great-granddaughter , Megan E. Davis. She is also survived by two brothers and three sisters.

A memorial service for friends and family was conducted Sunday afternoon, Aug. 3, at 4 p.m. at Canaan Baptist Church in Mill Creek where she was a member.  From 3 Aug 2009. 

Kirk A. Berry

Kirk Andrew Berry, 40, of Lake Wylie, S.C., died July 25, 2009.

Kirk, the son of Michael E. Berry and Linda Daniels Berry Edwards. Kirk was born Jan. 16, 1969, at Loveland, Ohio, on his mother's birthday.

Kirk is survived by his wife of two years, Regina Mikell Berry; daughter, Camille Olivia Noelle Berry, 4 months; and stepdaughter, Brianna Brielle Regan Canterbury, 6; brother, Michael Scott Berry and sister, Tynlee Dyann Berry Bailey; stepmother, Lynn Berry; stepfather Richard N. Edwards Jr.; stepbrother, Nathan Edwards and stepsister, Eileen Edwards; grandparents, Thurman A. Daniels and wife, Lois, and Kathleen Daniels; uncles, Dwight P. Berry, Bruce D. Berry and Stephen A. Daniels; aunts, Shirley J. Daniels and Terri S. Daniels; six nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Reginald G. and Louise D. Berry.

Growing up Kirk excelled at sports participating in Little League, Babe Ruth, All Stars, Punt Pass & Kick and soccer, and he was an avid golfer. He had a love of and talent for music and had written and recorded many songs. Kirk graduated from Charlotte Mecklenburg schools. He earned a journeyman's license and then accomplished his master electrician's certification. He started and managed a successful electrical contracting business since 2004, of which he was so proud.

Kirk was a beautiful, inquisitive child and a bright, energetic, talented and fun-loving adult. From his teenage years until his death, he struggled with chemical dependency. Until his recent relapse, he had many good periods of sobriety including the past six years. Our family is so grateful for all the support we have received over the years from treatment professionals and the recovery community in the Charlotte area.

Kirk brought joy to our lives and we will miss him terribly. We will remember the good times and will love him always.

A memorial service was conducted July 30, 2009, at Scherer Memorial Presbyterian Church, Lake Wylie, S.C. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made for the family to Regina Berry, 1819 Montague Road, Lake Wylie, S.C. 29710.  From 3 Aug 2009. 

Lonnie D. Bender

Lonnie Dale "Budd" Bender, 73, of Crawford, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center in Elkins.

He was born June 1, 1936, at Cleveland, the son of the late Lonnie H. and Sarah McCartney Bender.

He is survived by two brothers, Theodore Bender and wife ,Tresa, of Cowen and Leo Bender and wife, Juanita, of Grafton, Ohio; four sisters, Reta Dobbins of Vermillion, Ohio, Mrs. Herbert (Freda) Tolliver of Crawford, Vonda "Sue" Strincosky of Fairmont and Mrs. Johnnie (Mary) Johnston of French Creek; and two sisters-in-law, Gene Bender and Carol Bender. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard and Arden Bender.

Lonnie was a U.S. Army veteran, having served at Fort Clayton, Panama Canal Zone. He was a member of the Rock Cave Masonic Lodge 81 AF & AM. He owned and operated Linger Chair Factory in Rock Cave.

Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 8 PM. Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 6, at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel with Dr. Ken Ramsey and the Rev. Dan Lowther officiating. Interment will follow in Wimer Cemetery at Straight Fork. The Masonic Lodge 81 AF & AM of Rock Cave will conduct Masonic graveside services.

Marcelene Stemple

Marcelene Stemple, 83, of Tacy community, Route 2, Philippi, died Friday morning, July 31, 2009, in Monongalia General Hospital, following a brief illness.

She was born July 7, 1926, at Fairview Community, the only child of the late Theodore Charles and Blanche M. (Boyles) Hotsinpiller.

On June 9, 1946, she was married to James P. Stemple, who survives at their home at Tacy.

Also surviving are a son, Danny Stemple and wife, Anna Lou, of Philippi; a daughter, Dawn J. Harris and husband, Stephen R. "Randy," of Sycamore community; three grandchildren, Stephanie Stemple of Clarksburg, Laura (Stemple) Morrison and husband, Josh, of Philippi and Jordan B. "Bart" Harris of Sycamore; and one great-grandson, Dayton Morrison of Philippi.

Mrs. Stemple was a graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College. She had been employed as a secretary and bookkeeper for the Philippi Southern States Cooperative, the Federated Store and the Barbour Department Store. She was a member of the Cross Roads United Methodist Church where she was also a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Tacy Community Education Outreach Society and the Tacy Community Improvement Association.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today from the Cross Roads United Methodist Church. The Rev. Edward Hardman will officiate and interment will follow in the Cross Roads Cemetery.

Friends called at Stemple & Forman Funeral Home Sunday and may call from 9 a.m. until noon today when Mrs. Stemple will be moved to the Cross Roads United Methodist Church, where friends may call from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.., the funeral hour.

Stephen W. Snyder

Stephen Webster Snyder, 67, a resident of Buckhannon, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at his home.

He was born May 23, 1942, at Huttonsville, a son of the late Brooks and Glendine Lower Snyder.

On Dec. 6, 1963, at Grafton, he was married to Dottie Lou Tacy Snyder, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Marvin Travis Snyder of Martinsburg; and one daughter, Marcella Trish Snyder of Wheeling. One brother, Larry Snyder of Elkins; and two sisters, Luella Simmons of Huttonsville and Sharon Stalnaker of Silver Spring, Fla., also survive.

Preceding him in death was one brother, Joe Snyder.

Mr. Snyder was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the U.S. Army. During his service, he reached the rank of sergeant. He was employed as a branch manager for Purity, Kettering and Flowers Baking Companies and was a distributor for Archway Cookies.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug.5, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ronald McCauley officiating. Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville. Full military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of H.W. Daniels Post No. 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Charles Wratchford

Charles Werner Wratchford Jr., 82, a former resident of Elkins, departed this life Jan. 27, 2009, in Harmony Assisted Living in Orlando, Fla.

He was born Wednesday, Jan. 26, 1927, at Ellamore, a son of the late Charles Werner Wratchford Sr. and Pearl Rumer Roark of Orlando, Fla.

He was married to Barbara Maureen Chambers Wratchford, who preceded him in death.

He was a veteran who served in Germany during World War II and spent nearly 10 years in the U.S. Army. He was then employed by the Federal Aviation Administration, working at National Airport in Washington, D.C. for 17 years as an electronic technician.

In 1976, he moved to Elkins, where he worked at the Elkins-Randolph County Airport until his retirement in 1983.

He was a member of the Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion. He was a member of the Mountain State Transmitters Radio Club, a life member of National Amateur Radio Relay League, a life member of National Association of Federal Retired Employees and vice chairman of All Veteran Memorial Committee.

He was commander of the local Disabled American Veterans chapter from 1995 to 2001 and continued driving the DAV van until December 2002. He helped create the local program and was a driving force behind the transport of community veterans to various VA hospitals for medical care. He would drive veterans to the VA hospitals in Clarksburg and Pittsburgh, Pa., in his own car before the VA had a van for that purpose. He always downplayed his contribution to the DAV Transport Program, to which he had put in more than 9,000 volunteered hours since 1992. He said, "What I've done is nothing special, I just feel like you ought to help people if you can." The community gave him a special recognition for his selfless devotion to this public service by nominating him "Hometown Hero" in The Inter-Mountain during February of 2003.

He is survived and loved by his three daughters, Charlene England and husband, Bill, and their sons, Jamie England and Sean England and wife, Ashley, all of Philippi, Kathleen Taillon and husband, Gregory, and their daughter, Kathryn and son, Gregory, all of Winter Garden, Fla., and Julia Wratchford, of Orlando, Fla.

In addition, he is survived by his stepfather, Paul Roark of Florida; a half brother, Willis Smith of Bolivia; two half sisters, Aurora Humphries and husband, Bob, and their son, Michael McCabe, all of North Carolina, and Ann Cogley of Maryland; three sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Picciano of California, and her sons, Stephen Picciano of California, Louis Picciano and wife, Natasha, and their children, R'eme and Anais, all of New Jersey, and Eugene Picciano and wife, Patti, and their daughter, Kayla, all of California, Catherine Nicholas and husband, John, of Costa Rica, and their daughters, Ceilia Marx of California, Katherine Marx of Florida, and Frances Chambers of Costa Rica.

Mr. Wratchford's request for cremation was honored. A memorial graveside service will be conducted at the American Legion's Little Arlington Cemetery Saturday, Aug, 8 at 10 a.m. where members of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors. Interment will follow.

Corey D. Lofton

Corey Davis Lofton, 22, of Arthur, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Derreck Robinson

Derreck "Petie" Wayne Robinson, 34, of Elkins, departed this life Thursday, July 30, 2009.

He was born Friday, April 11, 1975, at Elkins, to Elizabeth Anne Robinson and David Allen Moore of Huttonsville.

He enjoyed teaching children, wrestling and all other sports. He tried to instill in young children the importance of doing something that they enjoyed. He liked hunting and fishing in his free time. Derreck loved spending time with his nieces and nephews. Derreck was an avid wrestler from junior high through high school. He served in the U.S. Army where he received a certificate for Airborne Assaults. He was chosen for the Army Olympic Wrestling Team. He later coached many athletes in wrestling and many other sports. Derreck loved spending time with his maternal grandfather, Ira Taylor of Beverly, and his greatest joys were his nieces and nephews, Carrie Moore, Robbie Cutlip, McKenzie "Bug" Moore and Dominick "DomDom" Robinson.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jared Moore; maternal grandmother, Katherine Clark; and paternal grandparents, Edward and Mary Moore.

In addition to his mother and father, grandfather and nieces and nephews, his survivors include wife, Teresa Burns of Fort Bliss, Texas; one sister, Marjeanna Moore of Elkins; two brothers, Luis Manuel Robinson and fiance, Karen Kubly, of Belington and Eric Moore of Dailey; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be today from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 100 Meadow Lane, Valley Bend. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wendsday at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jack Howell officiating. Burial with military honors accorded by American Legion Post 29 of Elkins and Elkins Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3647 will follow in the Beverly Cemetery at Beverly.

Helen M. Sturm

Mrs. Helen Margaret Sturm, 90, a resident of 1011 Crim Ave. in Belington, departed this life early Sunday morning at her home. She had been in declining health for the past two years.

She was born July 8, 1919, at the Dartmoor Community, a daughter of the late Gordon and Chloe Daniels McDonald.

She was married to Jack P. Sturm, who preceded her in death in 1959.

Surviving are four sons, Fred Sturm of Pennsylvania, Bill Sturm of Belington, Steve Sturm and wife, Chris, of Belington and Tim Sturm Sr. and wife, Opal, of Belington; one son-in-law, Gary Stuart of Philippi and daughter-in-law, Liz Sturm. Also surviving are a caregiver, Sharon Bottomly; and seven sisters, 25 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sons, Jack, Roger, Vick and Jimbo Sturm; one daughter, Donna Hope Stuart; and one sister, three brothers,and one daughter-in-law.

Mrs. Sturm attended the schools of Barbour County and retired from the housekeeping department of the Memorial General Hospital in Elkins. She was a Protestant by faith, was a lifetime member of the Laurel Mountain Post 410 Ladies Auxiliary in Belington and enjoyed playing the game of bingo.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and again on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home parlor with the Rev. Doyle N. Rider officiating. Interment will follow in the Knights of Pythias Mountain View Cemetery near Junior.

Mary Campbell Sutton, 73, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born Oct. 12, 1935, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Daniel Elmer and Janice Emma Lewis Campbell.

Also preceding her in death was a sister, Betty Kennedy.

She is survived by one son, Allen Campbell, of Morgantown; one granddaughter, Rhiannon Campbell of St. Albans; one sister, Irene Linger, of Elkins; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was retired from Moore Business Forms.

Arnold Huffman

Arnold Elijah Huffman, 91, of Buckhannon, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

He was born Aug. 4, 1917, at Canaan, a son of the late Jason Arnold and Dessie Lee England Huffman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Freda Lucille Ware; second wife, Freda "Red" Blanche Vaughan; two brothers, Wilmoth and Everett Huffman; and eight sisters, Ruby Carr, Pauline Shaw, Goldie Shaw, Ruth Rice, Rose Westfall, Beulah Roth, Birdie Huffman and Bertha Huffman.

He is survived by four daughters, Charlotte Chandler and husband, Charles, of Pickens, Nancy Hillard and husband, John, of Charleston, Jewell Beeson and husband, Terry, of Buckhannon and Bonnie Rowan and husband, Junior, of Buckhannon; six sons, George Huffman and wife, Judy, of Canton, Ohio, Jack Huffman and wife, Nancy, of Bradenton, Fla., Denver Huffman and wife, Debbie, of Finksburg, Md., Mike Huffman of Buckhannon, Everett Huffman and wife, Karen, of Parkersburg and Randy Huffman of Anmoore; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Charles Michael Smith, 39, of Mill Creek, entered into eternal rest Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009.

He was born Thursday, Aug. 7, 1969, at Waynesboro, Pa., a son of Larry and Joyce Warren Smith.

Growing up in a military family, Mike had lived in several states. He made West Virginia his home since 1989. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors very much. He was Catholic by faith.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Harvey and Phyllis Smith; maternal grandparents, Charlie and Betty Warren; one brother, David Ray Smith; and one nephew, Christopher Smith.

Mike is survived by parents, Larry and Joyce Smith of Mill Creek; one sister, Jennifer Ratliff and husband, Jeff, of Paris Township, Ohio; three brothers, Jeff Smith and wife, Gina, John Smith and Brian Smith, all of Mill Creek; two nieces, Kayla Ratliff and Rebecca Smith; and six nephews, Dillion Warren, Jeffrey Ratliff, Zane Smith, Elliott Smith, Gage Smith and T.J. Smith.

Visitation will be today from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 100 Meadow Lane, Valley Bend. George E. Chisolm

On March 4, 1951, the Chisolm family cheerfully and gratefully welcomed a son born to Richard E. and Mary Jane Chisolm at Elkins, whom they named George Edward Chisolm.

George was a graduate of Coalton Twelve Year School and attended Marshall University in Huntington where he majored in speech. In 1970, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.

George was baptized at an early age at Shiloh Baptist Church in Elkins and upon locating in the Valley of the Sun in 1992, he became a member of First Institutional Baptist Church in Phoenix, Ariz.

In 1971, George was united in holy matrimony to Marlene Reed and they were married for 37 years.

They lovingly became the parents of six children, George "Chipper" Jr. and wife, Norma, Michala Ganados and husband, Ben, Eugene "Geno" Chisolm, Tonya Lennox and husband, Bryan Keith, Audrey Biglow and Veronica Williams and husband, Rodney. They became grandparents to a host of grandchildren and one great-grandson.

In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandson, he is survived by one sister, Barbara Tyson and husband, Harold, of Snowshoe; and two brothers, Henry Chisolm and wife, Jennifer, of Farmington and Robert Chisolm and wife, Anita, of Harding.

In addition to spending special time with his family, "Chip" was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing the game with many of his close friends.

George departed this life on Sunday, July 19, 2009, in Phoenix, Ariz.

Martha L. LeBlanc

Martha Lee LeBlanc, 75, of Sun City, Calif., died Wednesday, July 22, 2009.

She was born Feb. 21, 1934, at Marlinton, the daughter of the late Dennis E. Nelson and the late Virginia Mae Varner Nelson.

She had worked in the aircraft assembly industry the most part of her life.

In 1979, she married Joseph LeBlanc, who survives her at their home in Sun City.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Bonnie McQuain of Lakewood, Calif., and her brother, Danny Nelson of Elkins. She has two surviving grandchildren, Veronica and Robert, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Martha was preceded in death by her first born grandchild, George Hernadez, and her sister, Betty Jean Nelson Vance.

Services for Martha were conducted July 30 in Sun City, Calif., under the direction of the Miller-Jones Mortuary. She was laid to rest in Riverside National Cemetery on July 31.  From 5 Aug 2009.

Mildred Goldberg

Mildred Elizabeth Raikes Goldberg, 94, a former resident of Westview Drive, Elkins and more recently a resident of Colonial Place, departed this life Tuesday evening, August 3, 2009, in the nursing home.

She was born Saturday, July 31, 1915, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Merrill C. Raikes Sr. and Jane Gibson Raikes.

On Aug. 10, 1942, at Pittsburgh, Pa., she was married to Alex Goldberg, who preceded her in death on Sept.14, 1973.

Surviving her are one sister-in-law, Marylou A. Raikes of Elkins; one nephew, Dr. Merrill C. Raikes III and wife, Connie, of Ashfield, Mass.; one great-niece, Jane Raikes and husband, Dan Markewitz, of Athens, Ga.; and one great-great-nephew, Ethan Asher Markewitz of Athens, Ga.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Merrill C. Raikes Jr.

Mildred attended Clarksburg elementary schools, graduated from Washington-Irving High School with the class of 1933 and had attended Salem College, Davis & Elkins College and Clarksburg Business College. She was a member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, PI Beta Fraternity, Women's Club of Elkins, College Aid, American Legion Auxiliary, Alpha Shrine of Jerusalem No. 19, Emma Scott Garden Club, a life member of the West Virginia Garden Clubs and National Council of State Garden Clubs, Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce and Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center.

Mildred had traveled extensively, having been to all the 50 states and on all continents except Antarctica. During the Big Band Era, she was a vocalist and conductor of the Alex Goldberg Orchestra.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery.

Nancy F. Rogers, 51, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 10:40 a.m. Monday, Aug.3, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown.

She was born Sept. 8, 1957, at Elkins, a daughter of Adeline Paugh of Elkins and the late Willard Chenoweth.

On Dec. 21, 1991, at Elkins, she was married to Delmer W. "DJ" Rogers Jr., who survives.

Also surviving are her stepfather, Kenny Paugh of Elkins; two sons, James Mark of Morgantown and David Rogers of Petersburg; and four daughters, Leigh Anne Wagner and Tammy Begunich, both of Baltimore, Md., Kristy Reel of Petersburg and Paige Barrack of Elkins. Also surviving are seven brothers, Joe Chenoweth of Parsons, Allen, Gary, Terry, Jeff and Mike Chenoweth, all of Elkins, Kevin Chenoweth of Saint Clairesville, Ohio; and one sister, Cathy Wingler of Chicago, Ill. Four grandchildren and her beloved dogs, Angel, Wally and Willie, also survive.

Nancy was a graduate of Elkins High School and attended Davis & Elkins College. In 2004, she and DJ started Nandel Graphics of Elkins. She was an assistant tournament director for Fishers of Men Legacy Series. Nancy attended the Hart Chapel Church at Chenoweth Creek.

Arnold Elijah Huffman, 91, of Buckhannon, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

He was born Aug. 4, 1917, at Canaan, a son of the late Jason Arnold and Dessie Lee England Huffman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Freda Lucille Ware; second wife, Freda "Red" Blanche Vaughan; son, Billy Joe Huffman; two brothers, Wilmoth and Everett Huffman; and eight sisters, Ruby Carr, Pauline Shaw, Goldie Shaw, Ruth Rice, Rose Westfall, Beulah Roth, Birdie Huffman and Bertha Huffman.

He is survived by four daughters, Charlotte Chandler and husband, Charles, of Pickens, Nancy Hillard and husband, John, of Charleston, Jewell Beeson and husband, Terry, of Buckhannon and Bonnie Rowan and husband, Junior, of Buckhannon; six sons, George Huffman and wife, Judy, of Canton, Ohio, Jack Huffman and wife Nancy of Bradenton, Fla., Denver Huffman and wife, Debbie, of Finksburg, Md., Mike Huffman of Buckhannon, Everett Huffman and wife, Karen, of Parkersburg and Randy Huffman of Anmoore; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara D. Koon

Barbara D. Koon, 46, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, in the Hospice Care In-Patient Center of Elkins.

She was born Jan. 6, 1963, a daughter of Donald and Mary Smith DeBarr.

On Aug. 28, 1983, she married John W. Koon, who survives.

In addition to her parents and husband, she i survived by two sons, Walter G. DeBarr and Jonathan K. Koon and wife, Nikki, of Buckhannon; two daughters, Jainnie Koon and Marie Koon of Buckhannon; grandchildren Shaden and Skyler Debarr and Elijah Koon and one on the way; three brothers, Junior DeBarr and wife, Nat, and Roger DeBarr of Buckhannon and Randy DeBarr of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters Shirley Tenney and husband, Rick, and Debbie Hollen and husband, Glenn, of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Koon was a secretary for Hinkle Glass and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Friends will be received today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She will lie in state at the church on Saturday from non to 1 p.m., the funeral hour with Bishop Cecil Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Union Church Cemetery. William J. Woods

The Rev. William Joe Woods, 70, a resident of St. George, departed this life Tuesday evening, Aug. 4, 2009, at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

He was born Friday, Jan. 6, 1939, at Petersburg, a son of the late William H. Woods and Mary S. Smith Woods.

On Jan. 15, 1961, at Maryland, he was married to the former Patricia Ann Miller, who survives. They had celebrated 48 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one son, Daniel J. Woods and wife, Jeanette, of Washington, N.C.; one daughter, Jennifer L. Tannehill and husband, Glen, of Gastonia, N.C.; four granddaughters, Janelle Sanchez and husband, Felipe, Sara, Laura and Hannah Woods; one grandson, Seth Tannehill; one brother, Thomas Woods and wife, Shirley, of LaVale, Md.; four sisters, Alice W. Turner of Petersburg, Linda Woods and Ollie Catherine George of Richmond, Va., and Pearl Alt of McKnightstown, Pa.

Preceding him in death were one daughter, Rebecca Sue Woods; a twin brother, Bobby Lee Woods; three sisters, Lola, Elizabeth and Betty; and three brothers, Clyde, Paul and James.

He attended the Johnson Run School in Petersburg. He served as pastor in the Church of God for 20 years, the Wesleyan Pentecostal Church for 10 years and was currently serving as pastor of the Pentecostal Outreach Ministry Church in Parsons. He was a carpenter, painter, mechanic and auto body repairman, and loved to tinker on anything mechanical. He was an avid outdoorsman.

The family will receive friends at the Pentecostal Outreach Ministry Church in the Pulp Mill Bottom, Parsons today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the church Saturday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. Pastor Daniel J. Woods will officiate and interment will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery at Petersburg where graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m.

Charles Werner Wratchford Jr., 82, a former resident of Elkins, departed this life Jan. 27, 2009, in Harmony Assisted Living in Orlando, Fla.

Mr. Wratchford's request for cremation was honored. A memorial graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at the American Legion's Little Arlington Cemetery where members of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors. Interment will follow.

Edward L. Bennett

Edward Lee Bennett, 71, a resident of Norton, passed away Friday morning, Aug. 7, 2009, at his home.

He was born Nov. 27, 1937, at Norton, a son of Virginia Pingley Bennett of Norton and the late Ralph Ted Bennett.

On July 3, 1965, at Norton, he was married to Janice Wilmoth Bennett who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Edward "Lee" Bennett and wife, Angela, and Ralph Bryan Bennett, both of Norton; one daughter, Virginia Cunningham of Elkins; and two sisters, Kathy Schoonover and husband, Keith, of Elkins and Delores Haddix of Norton; four grandchildren, Mandy Cunningham and Roy, Tiffany and Wesley Dickenson; and one great-grandson, Berkley D. Jaggie IV. Also surviving is his mother-in-law, Louise Wilmoth; and sister-in-law, Letha Wilmoth, both of Norton; nieces and nephews, Jeremey and Deidre Schoonover of Elkins, Karissa Corder and Louis of Elkins, Marissa Schoonover of Buckhannon, Rodney Bradberry and two sons and daughter, Timothy Haddix and wife, Amy, and four sons, Tamatha Snodgrass and two sons and daughter, all of Elkins; and a cousin, Travis Holbert and family.

A special thank you to God for sending an angel to help our family through the difficult times. This angel was Terri Lewis of Beverly.

Also preceding him in death was one sister-in-law, Helen Mae Bradberry.

Mr. Bennett was a 1958 graduate of Coalton High School and attended classes at Fairmont State College, Potomac State College, Marshall University and West Virginia University. He received the Para Professional Certificate and retired as a Para Professional from Tygarts Valley High School. He was also a self-employed contractor and was a member of the Labor Union of Clarksburg. He was an officer of the West Virginia School Service Personnel Association and an officer of the Randolph County Democratic Executive Committee.

Friends may call at the Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Walter Ellison officiating. Interment will follow at the Phillips Cemetery at Jimtown.

Eugene Brewer

Eugene Brewer, 60, of Mill Creek, entered into eternal rest Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009.

He was born Wednesday, July 6, 1949, at Mill Creek, a son of the late John D. and Ethel Edith Moore Brewer.

Eugene returned home to West Virginia 15 years ago. Before becoming disabled from a logging accident several years ago, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the great outdoors. John loved to read the Bible.

On July 11, 1998, in Valley Bend, he married the former Rebecca Louk, who survives in Mill Creek.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by stepmother, Barbara Catherine Hannah Brewer; one sister, Sheila Brewer Wright; and one brother, Lewis Brewer.

His survivors include his wife, Rebecca Louk Brewer of Mill Creek; one daughter, Tracy Brewer of St. Louis, Mo.; three sons, Robert Brewer of St. Louis, Mo., Rodney Brewer of Mill Creek and Eugene Paul Wymer of Durbin; six sisters, Connie Brewer Walker of Cold Creek, Colo., Evelyn Brewer Johnson of Alabama, Patricia Gumm of Staunton, Va., Sandra Moyer of Blue Grass, Va., Carol Greenlee of Pt. Pleasant and Wanda Losch of Mt. Soloan,Va.; seven brothers, Larry Brewer of Beverly, Don Brewer of Mill Creek, John Brewer of Durbin, Paul Brewer of Pennsylvania, Duncan Brewer of Durbin, Tommy Brewer of Marlinton and Wayne Brewer of Bartow; one stepdaughter, Sylvia Barb of California; one stepson, Jamie Barb of Mill Creek; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Eugene's wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered in the mountains of West Virginia

James R. Simons

James R. Simons, 69, passed away Thursday morning, Aug. 6, 2009, following an extended illness. He was born in Bridgeport on April 6, 1940, a son of the late Russell Glenn and Agnes Louise Newlon Simons.

He is survived by his six children, James R. Simons II and wife, Elizabeth, Randolph, N.J., Sarah Giles and husband, Brian, Culloden, Esther Kinnison and husband, Charles, Daniel Simons, Rebekah Simons and fiance, Matthew Weber, and Naomi Simons, all of Elkins; a brother, Ronnie Simons and wife, Wilma of Bridgeport; a sister, Carol Weissmann and husband, Henry of Binghamton, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews complete his family.

In his early years, James worked for the railroad and drove truck for various companies.

He attended the Church of God most of his life and loved the Lord. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent most of his free time in the woods. Family and friends will sadly miss him.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Elkins Church of God, 39 15th St., Elkins, W.Va. 26241. Friends may call at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Monday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Graveside services will be held at West Virginia National Cemetery at Pruntytown on Monday at 11:30 a.m. where military funeral honors will be accorded.

William J. Woods

The Rev. William Joe Woods, 70, a resident of St. George, departed this life Tuesday evening, Aug. 4, 2009, at his home.

Final rites will be conducted at the Pentecostal Outreach Ministry Church in the Pulp Mill Bottom at Parsons today at 11 a.m. Pastor Daniel J. Woods will officiate and interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery at Petersburg where graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for the Rev.
