James L. Vogel

James "Jim" Leonard Vogel, 71, of Buckhannon, passed away Friday, July 17, 2009, in United Hospital Center, following an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 29, 1937, at Webster Springs, the son of the late Max Lewis Vogel and Edna Katherine Fitzgerald Vogel.

Mr. Vogel is survived by his companion of 45 years, Lila M. See of Buckhannon.

Mr. Vogel retired from Bethlehem Coal Mines where he weighed coal trucks. He was also the owner/operator of Jim's Gun Shop in Buckhannon for 25 years. Mr. Vogel was a member of the Moose of Buckhannon Lodge 598, the National Rifle Association and Stone Coal Fishing Club.

Family and friends were received Sunday at Davis Funeral Home, One Olen Thomas Drive, Route 98 in Clarksburg.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today in Shinnston Masonic Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Brown officiating.

Kenneth Casto

Kenneth Casto, 81, a resident of Route 2, Tacy community, Philippi, departed this life and escaped the torments of his physical body to live in eternal peace with his heavenly father on Friday, July 17, 2009.

He was born March 1, 1928, in Barbour County, a son of the late Hoy Abraham and Addie Wice (Callahan) Casto.

He was united in marriage June 16, 1951, to Joan (Bolton) Casto who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Judy and husband, Kent "Cricket" Simmons, and Jane and husband, Bill Floyd, all of Philippi; two sisters, Emma Smith of Philippi and Eleanor Jo Miller of Buckhannon; one brother, Robert Casto of Volga; granddaughters, Jamie Jo and husband, Brian Carpenter, of Junior, Candi and husband, Bill Powers, of Elkins, Jennifer and husband, Daniel Collier, of Mt. Liberty community, Philippi, Crystal and husband, Brian Schaefer, of Coalton and Latisha Simmons and companion, Josh Farrar, of Moatsville; grandson, K.C. Hall and girlfriend, Sable Weese; great-grandchildren, Samantha Jo Esposito, Kaitlyn Powers, Kyatt Bailey, Chase Collier, Addie Jo Powers and Teagan Schaefer; stepgreat-grandchildren, Cody Farrar and Niki Farrar; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Casto was preceded in death by three brothers, Hersel V., William D. and Charles J. Casto; three sisters, Vera Dickenson Overfield, Lucille Bailey and Hazel Ward; infant, Raymond Casto; and grandson, William "Dubby" Jeffries III.

Mr. Casto retired from Martinka Coal Co. as a car dropper with 22 years service.

He was a member of the IOOF Lodge 59, Dorcas Rebekah Lodge 275, Past Grand Patriarch of IOOF of West Virginia, the Tacy seniors, Community Education Outreach Service and past president of Tacy Community Association.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. by the IOOF Lodge 59. Visitation will resume Tuesday, July 21, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the service hour with the Rev. Jerry Boyce and the Rev. William Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Crossroads Cemetery at Tacy.

Freddie G. Triplett

Freddie Grace Triplett, 82, a former resident of Philippi, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009, in Buckhannon at the home of her daughter where she had resided for the last 10 months.

She was born March 13, 1927, at Hendricks, the oldest daughter of the late Odis and Bessie (Long) Summerfield of Nestorville.

She was twice married first to Thomas Kimbrew and second to Ivan Triplett, both preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Epp of Buckhannon and Virginia Amick of Beaver;

six sons; Larry Summerfield of Lutz, Fla., Clifton Summerfield of Orleans, Mich., Thomas Kimbrew of Moatsville, Archer Kimbrew of Grand Junction, Colo., Douglas Kimbrew of Brandon, Fla., and Bryan Kimbrew of Marlinton; four sisters; Flora Jones of Slippery Rock, Pa., Rachael Gragg of Nestorville, Ruby Kisamore of Montrose and Barbara Steele of Norton; and five brothers; Carl Summerfield of Beverly, Doyle Summerfield of Nestorville, Walter Summerfield of Philippi, Lonnie Summerfield of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Roger Summerfield of Belington; and 26 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren

Mrs. Triplett was preceded in death by one daughter, Bessie Scott; three sons, Charles, Ricky and Michael Kimbrew; one sister, Alberta Frederick; and four brothers, Jack, Odis, Golden and Charles Summerfield.

Mrs. Triplett was a Methodist by faith. During her life, she worked as a homemaker, health-aide and baker in several restaurants in the Philippi area. She was best known for her homemade bread, pies and pastries. She had a faithful and loyal miniature poodle named, Pooh. Special thanks from the family to home health care-givers Diane Miner and Vonda Simons. Also the family would like to thank Hospice for the care they provided.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi today from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Thursday, July 23, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. ,the service hour with the Rev Jim Marshall and speaker Donna Marshall officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens in Elkins.

Harold F. Samples

Harold "Hank" Franklin Samples, 65, a resident of Conley Run Road, Valley Head, entered into eternal rest Saturday morning, July 18, 2009, in Hospice Care Inpatient Center in Elkins.

He was born Thursday, Oct. 28, 1943, at Elkins, a son of the late Ralph L. and Eleanor Hamrick Samples.

Surviving are six sisters and five brothers, Betty Sturms and husband, Lorne, Virginia Channell and husband, Mike, Dottie Canipe, Susan Culley and husband, George, Ruth Porter and husband, Chuck, Norma Samples, Ralph Samples Jr., Ray Samples, Gale Samples and wife, JoAnne, Michael Samples and wife, Cheryl, and Raymond Samples; and many nephews, nieces, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, Donna Dovel and Mary Ann Arbogast; and one brother, William Hamrick.

Hank grew up in Valley Head at the old home place where he lived and took care of his parents. Hank enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He enjoyed his family and was a Methodist by faith.

In honoring the request of Mr. Samples, his remains will be cremated. A celebration of life will be conducted from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services located at 100 Meadow Lane in Valley Bend. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Verl Simmons officiating.

Prentice Liller

Prentice D. Wayne Liller, 76, of Davis, died July 20, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 11, 1932, at Thomas, a son of the late Clarence and Edith Sowers Liller.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivetta Reed Liller, on Oct. 26, 1973; one son, Dale W. Liller on Feb. 14, 1988; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include four sons, Stanley Kisamore of Keyser, Kenneth Kisamore of Indianapolis, Ind., Rex Liller and Rodney Liller, both of Davis; four daughters, Lillie Ruth Adkins, Loretta Phillips and Latrella Small, all of Davis and Lorena Liller of Thomas; three brothers, Harold Liller of Missouri, Jerry Liller of Ohio, and Ronnie Liller; two sisters, Norma Hinkle of Deer Park, Md., and Doris Volker of Ohio; and 30 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Liller was a U.S. Army Korean Conflict veteran. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, United Mine Workers of America and Mars Network.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hinkle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 23, with the Rev. Allen Schwarz officiating. Interment will follow in Davis Cemetery.

Della M. Poling

Della Mae Poling, 90, of Pennsboro, formerly of Salem, departed this life July 21, 2009 at Parkersburg.

She was born March 24, 1919, at Elkins, the daughter of the late Darius and Frankie Lewis Boyles, widow of the Rev. Durward W. Poling.

She had spent most of her adult life as a minister's wife serving in Evangelical United Brethren and United Methodist churches throughout the state. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church and attended the Pennsboro United Methodist Church. For several years she was vice-president and program director for the West Virginia Conference Minister's Wives Association. Her family was of pioneer stock and she was direct descendant of Lord Baltimore. She was a member of the Order of Merit of Hereditary Nobility, the Honorable Order of the Byzantine Cross, a Commander of the Knightly Order of the Crown of Thorns, a Dame of Justice of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem (Knights of Malta), and held the title Duchess of Bransk-Marmora. Della had served on the Board of Regents of the Bodkin Bible Institute, received the Christian Motherhood Award in 1972, and was given the honorary degree of Doctor of Arts from the Great China Arts College-World University Roundtable U.N.E.S.C.O.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Kermit and Patricia Poling of Pennsboro; two grandsons, David Poling of Pennsboro and Mikael Poling of Parkersburg; three great-grandchildren, Britny, Erik, and Tiana Poling; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Boyles of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Poling; a brother, Lawrence Boyles; and two sisters, Leota Koontz and Martha Corley.

Her remains were moved to a crematory. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be conducted at the convenience of the family.

Elizabeth McCann

Elizabeth A. McCann, 90, of French Creek, died Monday, July 20, 2009, at her home.

She was born May 8, 1919, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Chambers C. and Tobitha T. Tenney Perry.

On July 4, 1941, she married Frank D. McCann, who preceded her in death Aug. 15, 2001.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Hyson, Monroe, Sandusky and Lafyette Perry.

She is survived by one daughter, Janet G. Hamner and husband, Tom, of Indian Camp; three sons, Ronald McCann and wife, Robyn, of French Creek, Robert D. McCann and wife, Bonnie, of Hueytown, Ala., and Stanford D. McCann and wife, Charlotte, of Indian Camp; two brothers, Egbert Perry of Adrian and Eddie Perry of Waterloo; six granddaughters, Monica Snider and husband, Jimmy, of Indian Camp, Shanah Carpenter and husband, Danny, of Carter, Shellie Humphrey and husband, Marty, of Crawford, Stephanie Gillum and husband, Eric, of Bethlehem, Connie Rowan and husband, Carl, of Buckhannon and Kathy McCann of Hueytown, Ala.; five grandsons, Vince Hamner and wife, Josette, of Durham, N.C., Bobby McCann and wife, Tammy, of Wardensville, Michael McCann and wife, Carolyn, of Buckhannon, Jeffrey McCann and wife, Terri, of Frenchton and Benjamin McCann of Alton; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. McCann was a homemaker, a member of the Indian Camp United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of the Indian Camp Settlers Club.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. She will lie in state at the Indian Camp United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 25, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour, with the Rev. Wease Day officiating. Scottie Bernadina Wilmoth Ables, 62, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, in St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born Nov. 24, 1946, in Gilmer County, a daughter of Dallas James Burrows and Ella Mae Blosser Burrows Johnston.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William O. "Buck" Wilmoth; two brothers, Howard and Junior Burrows; and three sisters, Dorothy Hicks, Mary Ables and Ellen Burrows.

She is survived by her second husband, John Fredrick Ables Sr; three sons, James Wilmoth and wife, Michelle, of Buckhannon, William Wilmoth and wife, Samitha, of Buckhannon and Jason Wilmoth of Buckhannon; two daughters, Lucy Small and husband, James, of Kesling Mill and Rebecca Wiant and husband, Charles, of Buckhannon; 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Orval Eugene Burrows of Elkins and Harold Burrows of Lewis County; and one sister, Ila Mae Carper of Ashtabula, Ohio.

Scottie was a homemaker and a Christian by faith.

Donald Lee Carroll, 79, a resident of Elkins, died at 5:25 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009.

At the request of the deceased, his remains were cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at the First United Methodist Church in Elkins. the Rev. Barry Moll and the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment of the cremains will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery.

Edith Rosetta Thompson Vandevander, 81, a resident of Route 1, Kerens, the Pheasant Run Community, departed this life Wednesday evening, July, 22, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

Eugene Sponaugle

Eugene Hayes "Jim" Sponaugle, 73, a resident of Hendricks, and more recently a resident of Berkley Springs, went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning, July 10, 2009, in Winchester Medical Center Winchester, Va.

He was born Thursday, Jan. 16, 1936, at Hambleton, a son of the late Bryan Sponaugle and Delva Carr.

On Nov. 8, 1958, he was married to the former Joann Long at Oakland, Md. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Edith Long.

Surviving are three daughters, Vera Nestor and husband, Michael, and Delva Tennant, all of Parsons and Twyla Beth Ullom and husband, Steve, of Berkley Springs; one stepson, Harry J. Fansler of Hendricks; a granddaughter, Rachel Summerfield and husband, Chad, of Fla., who he raised; two brothers, Harold Sponaugle and wife, Barb, of Ohio, and Lewis Sponaugle and wife, Revie, of Inwood; two sisters, Wilda Sponaugle of Ohio, and Lullabell Hardy and husband, Bud, of Hambleton; one half sister, Naomi Lambert and husband, Harry, of Mabie; one half brother, Butch Sponaugle and wife, Dottie, of St. George; two stepbrothers, Allen "Hambone" Mason of Parsons and Burl Mason of Hambleton; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were one brother, Cleon Sponaugle; one sister, Lucy Sponaugle; one stepsister, Martha Whetzel; and stepmother, Armitte Sponaugle, who was a loving mother to him and all the children.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1965. He was a brother coal miner. He attended Love Assembly of God church in Berkley Springs with the Rev. Dave Kidwell and was Pentecostal by faith.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, July 25, a noon in the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. Daughter Vera Nestor will say a few words.

He will be missed by his wife and family. He was a very loving father and husband, but we know he is in a far better place with our loving Lord Jesus Christ and all of the loved ones who went before him.

Harold Westfall

Mr. Harold Wayne Westfall Sr., 49, a resident of 8185 Stanleyville Rd., Whipple, Ohio, and a former resident of Belington, was pronounced deceased upon arrival Sunday, July 19, 2009, in Marietta Memorial Hospital at Marietta, Ohio. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

He was born April 16, 1960, at Akron, Ohio, a son of James B. Westfall of Macksburg, Ohio, and Lillian Jane Wyatt Sliter of Streetsboro, Ohio.

On Oct. 15, 1994, he was united in marriage to the former Juanita Lewis, who survives at their home in Whipple, Ohio.

Mr. Westfall is survived by three sons, Harold W. Westfall Jr. and wife, Kim, of Arden, Paul Westfall of Whipple, Ohio, and Randy Constable of Whipple, Ohio; and one daughter Dallas Westfall and fiance, Chad, of Volga. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Hazel Wyatt of Elkins; stepfather, Leon Sliter of Streetsboro, Ohio; sisters, Debra Vest and husband, John, of Belington, Deloris McCoy of Belington and Melissa Leggett of Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers include James "Jimmy" Westfall and wife, Renee, of Elkins, David Leggett and wife, Joy, of Elkins, Christopher Leggett and wife, Stephanie, of Norton, James Leggett and wife, Whitney, of Elkins, Matthew Leggett of Streetsboro, Ohio, and Jonathan Leggett of Streetsboro, Ohio; five grandchildren, Dylan Westfall, Conner Westfall, Landon Westfall, Madison Cutright and Braydon Westfall; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by three infant siblings; stepfather, William E. Leggett; maternal grandfather, Boyd Wyatt; and paternal grandparents, George Westfall and Bessie Kittle.

Mr. Westfall graduated from Philip Barbour High School in 1979. Harold was employed by Broughton Foods in Marietta, Ohio, as a truck driver for several years. He attended the Marietta Church of God and was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motor cycle.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington Friday July 24, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. when final rites will then be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev Downing Gregory officiating. Interment will follow in the Concord Cemetery near Belington.

Rita F. Rodgers

Rita Faye Rodgers, 50, of Beverly, entered into eternal rest at 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins with family at her side.

She was born Friday, Dec. 19, 1958, at Elkins, a daughter of the late William Gould and Edith Scott Gould, who survives in Beverly.

She attended the schools of Randolph County. She enjoyed reading, watching television and crafts. Rita loved being with her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Alison Gerwig and husband, Aaron, and their children Peyton and Gracie all of Elkins and Kellie Rodgers and son Caiden of Beverly; two sons, John Rodgers and wife, Crystal, and their children, Cheyenne Lowrance and John Jr., all of Mount Ulla, N.C., and Clinton Rodgers and wife, Kelly, and their children, Amie and Brayden, all of Statesville, N.C.; mother, Edith Scott Gould of Beverly; two sisters, Janet Smarr and Ada Ward and husband, Steve, all of Sissonville; one brother, Craig Gould and wife, Norma, of Balad, Iraq .

A. Gene Kern

Altha Gene Kern, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was a resident of Myrtle Beach Manor for the last two years.

She was born in 1922 on a farm in Smithville and grew up in Elkins, the daughter of H.T. and Beulah Schoonover, along with her six siblings, Brad, Freda, Gayzelle, Kay, Edgar and Kenneth.

After high school, she lived near Chicago, Ill., where she worked in a veterans administration hospital during World War II. She married Robert Kern, an Air Force navigator, who is now deceased. They lived in Milburn and then Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., until 1978 when they retired to Elkins and later to Myrtle Beach.

Gene is survived by her three children, Barbara Kern of Salem, Mass., Patte Huff of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mike Kern and his wife, Nancy, of Madison, Wis.; and her grandchildren, Gretchen and Michelle Kern and Marisa, Tyler and Lisa Huff. Also surviving are her brother, Kenneth Schoonover of Port Orange, N.J.; a niece, Sandy Marturano of Brick, N.J.; a nephew, Gary Schoonover of Elkins; and their families, as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Gene loved her family and friends and the residents and staff at the Manor. Her interests were quilting and sewing, cooking, antiques, music, movies, the outdoors and gardening, and her cat, Oliver, who gave her many hours of happiness and companionship. She always had a special affection for her home state of West Virginia, but she enjoyed the warm weather and life in Myrtle Beach.

Gene will be missed by all who knew her, and she will be remembered for her warmth, patience, sweetness and infectious laughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father Ray Carlo officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel, in Murrells Inlet, S.C.

Carla Stalnaker

Carla "Joy" Stalnaker, 63, of Philippi, died Wednesday morning, July 22, 2009, at her home, with her family by her side and following a several month illness.

She was born June 30, 1946, a daughter of the late Russell O. and Macel Ellen (Shaw) Upton.

On Aug. 13, 1965, she was married to Daniel Joe Stalnaker, who survives at their home at Philippi.

Also surviving are two sons, Gregory Lyn Stalnaker and wife, Angie, of Philippi and Daniel Joe Stalnaker Jr. of Morgantown; and three grandchildren, Logan Stalnaker, Garrett Stalnaker and Kendra Stalnaker, all of Philippi.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Linda Lou Shaffer; and by a brother, Kenneth Ray Upton.

Mrs. Stalnaker was recently employed as produce manager for the Galaxy Foodfresh Supermarket at Philippi. She had formerly been employed as manager of the Mountaineer Mart, the Pantry Store and the Madison/Mountaineer Shoe Store, all in Philippi. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, especially trying new recipes. She particularly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Stalnaker's request for cremation was honored. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 26, from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St. in Philippi. Pastor Bryan Headley will officiate. Mrs. Stalnaker's family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Donald L. Carroll

Donald Lee Carroll, 79, a resident of Elkins, died at 5:25 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009, as a result of cancer.

At the request of the deceased, his remains were cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Elkins. The Rev. Barry Moll and the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment of the cremains will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery.

Edith Vandevander

Edith Rosetta Thompson Vandevander, 81, a resident of the Pheasant Run Community, Kerens, went home to be with her Lord and her loving husband Paul, on Wednesday evening, July 22, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital, with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren by her bedside.

She was born Wednesday, Oct. 5, 1927, at Whitmer, a daughter of the late Isaac Thompson and Floda Nelson Thompson.

On Sept. 29, 1945, at Harman, she was married to Paul Junior Vandevander, who preceded her in death Aug. 22, 2006.

Surviving are six children, Nancy Marie Kalar and husband, Joe, Kenneth Edward Vandevander and wife, Wanda, all of Kerens, Pauletta Ramsey and husband, Brad, of Parsons, Benny Jay Vandevander and wife, Maureen, Norma Gay Channell and husband, Gary, and Rebecca Sue Arbogast and husband, Cletus Ray, all of Kerens; 13 grandchildren, Jody and Billy Kalar, Kevin, Tim and Jason Vandevander, Heather, Dan and Erin Ramsey, Debbie Lawrence, Mike Vandevander, Bryan Channell, Amy Barrett and Adam Arbogast; and 11 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Breanna, Brittany, Corey, Joshua, Todd, Kimberly, Kyleigh, Madison, Jakob and Isaac.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by three sisters, Marie Cole, Hallie Harper and Sylvia Thompson; six brothers, Roscoe, Golden, Clinton, Clyde, Dorsey and Calvin Thompson; and one great-grandson, Noah Michael Vandevender.

She attended the schools of Randolph County. She was a member of Irons Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker.

Eugene Hayes "Jim" Sponaugle, 73, a resident of Hendricks, and more recently a resident of Berkley Springs, went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning, July 10, 2009, in Winchester Medical Center Winchester, Va.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, July 25, a noon in the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. Daughter Vera Nestor will say a few words. He will be missed by his wife and family. He was a very loving father and husband, but we know he is in a far better place with our loving Lord Jesus Christ and all of the loved ones who went before him.

Gladys White

Gladys Bodkins White, 84, of Lorain, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 31, 1924, at Bowden, and has been a resident of Lorain, Ohio, since 1953.

Along with her husband, Gladys was employed as the co-owner and landlord for White Rentals in Lorain and was a member of the Lake Erie Landlord's Association. In her free time, she enjoyed swimming as well as flower and vegetable gardening. Additional interests included country music and prospecting at local garage sales and thrift shops.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Clyde; and daughter, Judy Szuch and husband, Gary, all of Lorain, Ohio; granddaughter, Jessica Szuch of Geneva, Ohio; grandson, Timothy Szuch of Lorain, Ohio; brothers, Leslie Herbert Bodkins of Elkins, Lapel Clark Bodkins of Valley Head, Aubrey Jackson Bodkins of Oberlin, Ohio, Harvey Joe Bodkins of Amherst, Ohio; and sisters, Anna Leen Shifflett of Elkins, Roseleen Teter of Montrose and Cecelia Kesel Mullins of Baltimore, Md.

She was preceded in death by her son, David White; her parents, Herbert and Pearl Hoover Bodkins; brothers, Forrest Francis Bodkins, Harry Joe Bodkins and Donnie Lee Bodkins; and sisters, Pally LaVon Goodwin, Elsie V. Edmond and Monnie Lee Bodkins

Ralph H. Stanley

Ralph Harding Stanley, 88, of Thomas, passed away July 22, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born March 4, 1921, at Meadows Odan, Lloyd County, Va., a son of the late Grover and Alva Dickerson Stanley.

He is survived by two sons, Lawrence Stanley of Cleveland, Ohio, and Chester Stanley of Trenton, Texas; one brother, "Lenny" Howard Stanley of Oak Hill; two grandchildren, Shelia Pecek and Lawrence A. Stanley; and four great-grandchildren, Emily, Joshua, William and Alex.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Mae Brewer in 1981; and one sister, Norene Ord.

Mr. Stanley was a coal miner, a veteran of the Merchant Marines and a member of the Mountain Top Hunt Club. He enjoyed reading, hunting and fishing.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hinkle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at the funeral home with the Rev. Jim Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Bland Raikes

Bland "Nub" Raikes, 93, of Rock Cave, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born July 23, 1916, in Frenchton, a son of the late Hoy Jasper and Ressie Phillips Raikes.

On Sept. 30, 1946, he married Violet Tressie Strader, who preceded him in death on July 31, 2007.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Odbert "Jake," Merwin "Merb" and Harold "Bucky" Raikes; and one sister, Regina Helmick.

He is survived by one son, Roger B. Raikes of Rock Cave; two daughters, Cheryl Susan Post and husband, Kevin, of Hodgesville and Robin Gay Chidester and husband, Dale, of Buckhannon; two grandsons, Kelvin Post of Hodgesville and Dustin Chidester of Buckhannon; two granddaughters, Ieshya Claypool and husband, Russell, of Hodgesville and Miranda Chidester of Elkins; three great-grandsons, Damien Claypool and Ashton Post of Hodgesville and Gavin Chidester of Elkins; a stepgreat-grandson, Chace Cogar of Illinois; one brother, Hoy Junior Raikes of Cedar Hill, Texas; and one sister, Oneta Reger of Mansfield, Ohio.

Mr. Raikes served in the Army during World War II. He worked for Upshur County in maintenance and as a mechanic.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 26, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Laura M. Weese

Laura Mae Price Weese, 90, a resident of Elkins and more recently a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, departed this life early Friday morning, July 24, 2009, in the nursing home.

She was born Monday, Aug. 12, 1918, at Belington, a daughter of the late Benjamin H. Price and Alleta Shahan Price.

On March 27, 1936, she married Carl W. Weese, who preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1996.

Surviving her are one son, William David "Bill" Weese of Elkins; two daughters, Martha Jane Handley and husband, Donald, of Cumming, Ga., and Virginia Mae "Ginger" Greene and husband, Michael, of Weirton; one brother, Charles "Bud" Price and wife, Verna, of Elkins; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a special cat, "Tinker."

Preceding her in death are three sons, James Winfred, Richard Dale and Carl Junior Weese; one brother, Paul Price; three sisters, Mary Alice Phillips, Irene Shockey and Ruth Ann Scott; and one grandson, Garrett Wayne Gibson.

Laura attended Belington High School, was a homemaker, a noted cook, an avid gardener and attended the Elkins First Church of the Nazarene.
