Alfred L. McQuaid

Alfred Louis McQuaid, 77, of Lumberport, died in United Hospital Center on Saturday, July 11, 2009, following a brief illness.

Alfred was born on April 26, 1932, at Sardis, the son of the late Gruber Thurman McQuaid and Mary Ellen Shear McQuaid.

He was married to Harriet Marie Cunningham McQuaid.

In addition to his wife, Mr. McQuaid is survived by one son, Douglas G. McQuaid and his wife, Yvonne, of Lumberport; four daughters, Rose Napier and husband, Dennis, of Lumberport, Pamela Heaster and husband, Steve, of Salem, Carol Rush and husband, James, of Houston and Jacqueline Myers and husband, Wilbur, of Wheeling; 14 grandchildren, Andrew and Samantha McQuaid, Dennis and Suzanne Napier, Adam, Danielle and Hilary Heaster, Stacy Stewart, Christie Flesher, Amanda Mitchell and Greg, Kurt and Lauren Myers; and two great-grandchildren, Olivia Sophi and Alex Flesher.

In addition to his parents, Alfred was preceded in death by Elizabeth June McQuaid, John Kenneth McQuaid, William R. McQuaid, Richard L. McQuaid, Margaret McQuaid Swiger, George Thurman McQuaid, Freddie McQuaid and Janus Walton McQuaid.

Mr. McQuaid served our country in the U.S. Navy, and was a Christian by faith. He worked in the oil and gas industry and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved his camp at Glady where he spent a lot of his time with family and friends.

Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home in Shinnston today from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 14, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Perine officiating. Interment will follow in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.

Arthur F. Trenton  

Arthur F. "Art" Trenton, 84, of Petersburg, died Saturday, July 11, 2009, in Grant Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Moorefield Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Katherine Jackson officiating. Following the service, the family will receive family and friends in the Moorefield Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Interment in Maple Hill Cemetery will be private. Emily C. Shaver

Emily Carol Shaver, 89, a resident of Route 5, Buckhannon, and a former resident of Parkersburg, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2009, in Mansfield Place of Broaddus Hospital, following an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 6, 1919, at Fairview, a daughter of the late Eber and Rebecca (Collins) Price.

She was united in marriage on Dec. 24, 1937, to Lt. William Paul Shaver, who preceded her in death May 2, 2002.

Surviving are two daughters, Judy and husband, Roy Bush, of Route 5, Buckhannon and Jerry Sue and husband, Avon Cox, of Vienna; two sons, Jim and wife, Pat Shaver, of The Village, Fla., and Joe and wife, Debbie Shaver, of Buckhannon; and 23 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Melinda Shaver.

Mrs. Shaver lived in Marion, Lincoln, Gilmer and Wood counties and moved to Upshur County following her husband's retirement. She will be greatly missed by her special friend, Slyvia Haddix, who helped with her care. Next to her family, she loved southern gospel music, having sung with the "Stoffman Quartette" for many years.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 14, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. A celebration of her life will be conducted at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Westfall, the Rev Holly Hoover and Pastor Lester Boylan officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.

Judson J. Hodges

Judson J. Hodges, 90, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, July 9, 2009, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

He was born Oct.17, 1918, in Upshur County, a son of the late Judson T. and Rosella Post Hodges.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and a partner, Mary Glenn Bell.

He is survived by one son, James J. Hodges of Fairfax, Va.; and ex-wife, Juanita Hodges of Keyser.

Mr. Hodges was a member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church of Buckhannon, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663 and Franklin Lodge 7 AF & AM.

He was inducted in the Upshur County Athletic Hall of Fame and the Potomac State College Athletic Hall of Fame, where he worked as an assistant basketball and football coach from 1946-1951.

He was an FBI agent for 22 years, served as the assistant to the director and retired as a supervisor. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II where he attained the rank of major. He was instrumental in establishing miniature horses in the United States.

Friends will be received Tuesday, July 14, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Billee Scott Mick and Bobbie Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Lebanon Church Cemetery in Buckhannon.

Charles Rosenau

Charles W. "Bill" Rosenau, 72, mayor of Parsons, departed this life Monday afternoon, July 13, 2009, at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

Dakota M. Nelson

Dakota Matthew Nelson, 11-day-old son of Christopher Matthew and Amy Lee Nelson of Bartow, passed away July 5, 2009, in a Morgantown hospital.

Herman E. Wills

Herman Eugene Wills, 67, a resident of Route 1, Beverly, passed away Friday, June 10, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov.20, 1941, at Madison, a son of the late Mary Margaret Caldwell and stepson of the late Floyd Caldwell.

He was married to Margaret Ann Rohn Wills, who preceded him in death in 2004.

Surviving are one son, Carl Eugene Wills, and two daughters, Debora Ann Spears and Erica Diane Wills of Beverly. Also surviving are one sister, Annabelle Butcher of Dailey; an aunt and uncle, Frances and Raymond Acord of Dailey; and his grandchildren; Christy Diane Armstrong of Beverly, Carl Eugene Pridemore and Eric Morgan Wills of Lorado and Paden Heath Haney of Beverly.

Mr. Wills was a graduate of Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio. He worked for 20 years at Coastal Lumber Company and 15 years at Colonial Mill Works, prior to his retirement. He was a master and one of the last in the nation to be skilled at the lost art of filing circumference saws, a process now done by machines. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and was a skilled craftsman. He was a born again Christian who was baptized in the Baptist faith.

Friends may call from noon until 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. He will then be moved to the Brick Church Cemetery near Huttonsville where a graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Johnny Price will officiate and interment will follow.

Merlin Glenville Bible, 69, of Maysville, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, in Grant County Nursing Home where he resided for 14 years.

Myron Tomblyn, Funeral Home Founder Dies

Myron G. Tomblyn, 78, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 1:36 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at his home. He had been in declining health.

He was born Dec. 6, 1930, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Ira B. Tomblyn and the late Bessie Foster Tomblyn.

On Dec. 18, 1955. at Vienna, he was married to Sue C. Davidson Tomblyn, who preceded him in death on March 17, 2008.

Surviving are his children, Mark A. Tomblyn and wife, Dinah, Philip C. Tomblyn and wife, Karen, and Lisa Preusch and husband, Chuck, all of Elkins. Five grandchildren, whom he adored, Amanda and Alex Tomblyn, Julie, Katie and Amelia Preusch; one sister, Hannah Butcher of Fort Pierce, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Jean Tomblyn, and brothers-in-law, Stanton Reed of Buckhannon and Bob Gay of Elkins as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Garland Tomblyn, Richard Tomblyn, Ira J. Tomblyn and Robert Tomblyn; and two sisters, Edith Glass and Virginia Reed.

Myron was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School, a veteran of the U.S. Army and later graduated from Glenville State College. In 1959, he graduated with honors from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. The Tomblyn family moved to Elkins in 1965 and in 1968, along with his late wife, Sue, established Tomblyn Funeral Home where he maintained an active and important role in the operation of the funeral home until the time of his death. He was an active member of the West Virginia Funeral Directors Association and on June 19, 2002, was a recipient of the Charles E. Dodd Award Funeral Director of the Year.

He had been an active member of the Elkins Randolph County Chamber of Commerce serving as president for four terms and chairing the Home Show for many years. He was instrumental in the formation of the Randolph County Convention and Visitors Bureau in 1990, later serving three terms as president. In 1985 he was chosen Outstanding Businessman of Elkins by Beta Alpha Beta Business Fraternity of Davis & Elkins College. In 2004, he was a recipient of the Distinguished Citizen of the Year given by the Allohak Council of the Boy Scouts of America and in 2008, Myron and Sue Tomblyn were honored as Businessman and Woman of the year by the Davis & Elkins College Chapter of Sigma Beta Delta International Business Honorary Society.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Elkins, a member of BPOE Lodge No. 1135, Independent Order of the Odd Fellows Lodge 116, Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF & AM, Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 35 Royal Arch Masons, Osiris Shrine of Wheeling, Tygart Valley Shrine Club and the Pilgrim Commandary.

Myron was devoted to the profession of funeral service for nearly 50 years. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren at the family cabin and attending performances of the American Mountain Theater.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, July 19, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Monday, July 20, he will be moved to the First United Methodist Church where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley, the Rev. Barry R. Moll and the Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley will officiate and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Richard Yokum

Mr. Richard "Dick" G. Yokum Sr., 62, of Poolesville, Md., died July 8, 2009. He was born Feb. 16, 1947, in Mill Creek, W.Va.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Paula; two sons, Richard G. Yokum Jr. and Steven W. Yokum, both of Poolesville, Md.; and a loving granddaughter, Ashley Yokum, of Hagerstown, Md.

He is also survived by his mother, Etheleen Daniels of Beach City, Ohio; brothers, David and wife, Joyce, of Sterling, Va., Keith and wife, Lorraine, and Douglas "Speck" and wife, Angie, both of Mill Creek and Ronald Daniels of Beach City, Ohio; and sister, Carmel and husband, Jeff, of Navarre, Ohio.

Richard served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Everglades and was retired from Coca Cola, USA.

The family recieved friends Friday at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville, Md. (hiltonfh.com), where funeral services were conducted Saturday. Internment followed at Resthaven Cemetery, Frederick, Md.

Ruth G. McCauley

Ruth G. McCauley, 84, of Beverly, formerly a resident of Colonial Place, Elkins, entered into eternal rest Sunday, July 12, 2009, in Hospice Care Inpatient Center, 169 Diamond St., Elkins, surrounded by her family.

She was born Saturday, May 23, 1925, at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late John and Myrtle McCauley Johnson.

She attended the schools of Randolph County. She was employed in the housekeeping department with Mountaineer Motel in Morgantown.

Ruth's hobbies included flower gardening and ceramics. She loved her children and grandchildren dearly. Ruth will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph McCauley, in November 1986; one sister, Velva Nelson; one brother, Vaughn Johnson; one son-in-law, Albert Saltsman; and one great-grandson, Levi Hogue.

Ruth's survivors include two daughters, Hazel Marks of Cassville, and Wanda Saltsman of Beverly; two sisters, LueVonda McCauley of Cassville and Audra Hammonds of East Dailey; four brothers, the Rev. Delmas Johnson, Delmer Johnson; Russell Johnson and Gary Johnson, all of Elkins; eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 100 Meadow Lane, Valley Bend. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Delmas Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery at East Dailey.

Charles Rosenau

Charles William "Bill" Rosenau, 72, mayor of Parsons, went home to be with the Lord, Monday afternoon, July 13, 2009, at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

He was born Sunday, May 30, 1937, at Parsons, a son of the late Henry Clarence Rosenau and Inez Grace Parsons Rosenau.

On Dec. 1, 1956, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Sylvia Lea Knotts, who survives. They celebrated 52 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one son, Michael William "Mike" Rosenau and wife, Christine, of Parsons; two daughters, Barbara Jo Fisher and husband, Joe, of Morgantown and Kimberly Dawn Ledden and husband, John, of Mackeyville; one sister, Helen Jean Newbrough of Parsons; 12 grandchildren, Adam "Scott," Jason, Seth, Matthew, Lacy, Ryan, Logan, Tyler, Parker, Megan, Samantha and Camille; six great-grandchildren, Braxton, Ethan, Blake, Austin, Avery and Anisley; sister in law, Alma Rosenau and Grant and Maxine Parsons King of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Robert and Ronald "Barney" Rosenau; and four sisters, Elloween Flynn, Catherine Rosenau, Louise Simmons and Norma Lee Walker.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1956. He was president of his class and lettered in all sports of his four years of high school and was quarterback of the football team. He was an inspector for the West Virginia Division of Highways, a former employee of R.H. Armstrong and Kingsford Charcoal Co., the former Parsons Tannery and the former Dorman Mills, where he served as union president. He was a vocational teacher for Parsons High School and Tucker County High School for 32 years, having been voted by the students as favorite faculty member. He was a four-term mayor from July 1972 through June 1980. He was instrumental in the building of city hall, the library, Mill Race Park and the River City Ball Field of which he was very proud of. He was a member of the Parsons City Council, the West Virginia Education Association. He was emergency service director and he was on several boards and authorities. He was a member of Parsons High School Alumni Association and was inducted into the Parsons High School Hall of Fame. He coached track, football, little league and baseball. He was athletic director of Tucker County High School for several years. He was vice president of Tucker County Development Authority. He was a member of the River View Chapel Church where he served as trustee. At the time of his death, he was mayor of Parsons serving from July 2004 to present. He was an avid hunter, gardener and a fan of the West Virginia University Mountaineers. He especially loved to watch his grandchildren as they played sports, and he was no doubt their number one fan. His family was truly the love of his life.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Friday, July 17, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dick Gadd and the Rev. Pat Cassidy will officiate and interment will follow in the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the R.H. Gertrude "Trudy" Caroline Ringer, 78, of Buckhannon, died Friday, June 26, 2009, in Paula's Personal Care Home under the care of St. Joseph's Hospice after a lengthy battle with cancer.

At the request of the deceased, the body was cremated. Memorial services will be Saturday, July 18, at 1 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of Transfiguration, Kanawha Street, Buckhannon.

Jerry Paul "Champ" Currence, 46, a resident of Elkins, passed away Tuesday morning, July 14, 2009, in Hospice Care Regional Center in Elkins.

He was born Oct. 28, 1962, at Elkins, a son of the late Junior Currence and Joan Pastine Currence, who survives in Elkins.

Also surviving are two daughters, Ashley Bonner of Parsons and Robin Strawder of Elkins. One sister, Judy Broschart of Elkins; six grandchildren, Zakkary, Jonathon and Nicolas Bonner, Nathan and Warren Lanham and Kendall Corley; two nieces, PJ Merritt of Elkins and Carla Marsh and husband, Derek, of Belington; one great-niece, Meghan Merritt; three great-nephews, Joseph and Jaret Marsh and Andrew Merritt; and several aunts and uncles also survive.

Also preceding him in death, in addition to his father, were one brother, John Currence; and one sister, Joyce Currence.

"Champ" attended the schools of Randolph County. He had been disabled for many years and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Raymond G. Hill Sr., 71, a resident of Route 2, Belington, departed this life Tuesday morning, July 14, 2009, in the Belington Clinic. Death was sudden and unexpected.

He was born April 28, 1938, in Barbour County, a son of the late Alfred G. and Chloe E. Wagner Hill.

On Aug. 25 1972, he was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Ann Cross, who resides at their home in Belington.

Mr. Hill is survived by six children, four sons, Raymond G. Hill Jr. of Belington, Junior Shifflett and wife, Cindy, of Hawaii, Kevin Hill and wife, Tammy ,of Belington and Randy Hill and wife, Michelle, of Elkins and two daughters, Retta Daugherty of Cumberland, Md., and Kim Lambert of Belington. He is also survived by two brothers, Larry Hill and wife, Linda, of Belington and Carl Hill and wife, Sandy, of Belington; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hill attended the schools of Barbour County and was employed by Poling Trucking as a truck driver for several years from which he retired. He was Protestant by faith, a member of the National Rifle Association and the North American Hunting Club. Raymond was an avid hunter, fisherman and farmer.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 16, and again on Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bryan Headley officiating. Interment will follow in the Valley Bend Cemetery near Belington.

Thelma F. Butcher

Thelma Francis Butcher, 81, a former resident of Beverly, and more recently a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Monday, July 13, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 14, 1927, at Webster Springs, a daughter of the late Ralph W. and Nellie Jane Woodzell Kelly.

She was married to Ivan Dale Butcher, who preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1993.

Surviving are three sons, Ivan "Spike" Butcher of Perkiomanville, Pa., Charles "Mike" Butcher of Coopersburg, Pa., and Jack Butcher of Beverly. Two daughters, Yvonne "Von" Spaeth of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Vickie Hinzman of Elkins; and 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding her in death were two grandsons, Edward Norman Hinzman II and Gregory Johnson; one brother, Edward Kelly; and one sister, Teressa "Pat" Bennett.

Mrs. Butcher was a graduate of Beverly High School and was employed as a secretary for the Davis Memorial Hospital prior to her retirement. She was a Methodist by faith.

W. Elliott Ours

W. Elliott Ours, 74, of Davis, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at his daughter's residence in Shenandoah Junction.

He was born Dec. 2, 1934, at Clarksburg, the son of the late Willis E. Ours and Marguerite Fleming Ours.

He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Davis and a former member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Uvilla. Mr. Ours graduated from Thomas High School in 1952 and enlisted in the Army in 1953 and was discharged in 1956. He married Margot Benthien of Luebeck, Germany, on April 14, 1957 at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Clarksburg. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and was employed by the Federal Communication Commission as a field engineer in 1961 at the Detroit, Mich., Field Office. In 1968, the family moved to the Washington, D.C. area and he retired in 1989 as chief of the Enforcement Division. Mr. Ours was very interested in Canaan Valley/Tucker County history and was co-author of "Behold! The Land of Canaan." He was a member and former president of The Friends of the 500th and Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margot M. Ours of Davis; one daughter, Michele King and husband, Pat, of Shenandoah Junction; one son, Tom Ours and wife, Cindy, of Shepherdstown; one half brother, Robert A. Ours of Baton Rouge, La.; two grandchildren, Andrew King and Anna Kate Ours; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Renate and George Wilson of La Vergne, Tenn.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 17, at St. James Lutheran Church in Uvilla with Hospice Chaplain Luz Maiuri officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 24, in Rose Hill Cemetery in Thomas.

Charles William "Bill" Rosenau, 72, mayor of Parsons, went home to be with the Lord, Monday afternoon, July 13, 2009, at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

Dona Elizabeth Fessler Guessford, 69, a former resident of Washington, D.C., and more recently a resident of Elkins, departed this life Tuesday evening, July 14, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. She had been in declining health.

She was born Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1939, at Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Donald Joseph Fessler and Ruth Ethel Ashenfelder Fessler.

She was married to Sidney Guessford, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Steven Anthony Guessford of Ohio; and one brother, John S. Fessler and wife, Mary Lynn, of Beverly.

Preceding her in death were one daughter, Debra Eilene Guessford; and one sister, Ruth Ann Fessler Winters.

She was a graduate of Mackin Catholic High School at Washington, D.C., had worked for the General Accounting Office and the National Science Foundation, both for the United States Government at Washington, D.C. She was a lifelong member of the Saint Anthony's Catholic Church at Washington, D.C., was a homemaker and enjoyed reading.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. On Sunday, at 6:30 p.m., at the funeral home a prayer service will be recited by the Very Rev. Lawrence Ross

Lawrence Ross, 82, a resident of Mountain View Drive, Elkins, departed this life early Wednesday morning, July 15, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department.

He was born Wednesday, Feb. 23, 1927, at Coalton, a son of the late Emedio Rossi and Agatha Soccoccia Rossi.

On Sept. 29, 1951, at Coalton, he was married to the former Lenore Kathryn Harman, who survives. They had celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one son, Larry Harman Ross and wife, Susann, Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Edith Rossi DiBacco of Thomas, 12 nephews, Roger, Anthony and Joe Ross, Father John Vincent and John DiBacco, Butch, Jeff and Charles Triplett, Charles Colabrese, Leo Pase and Jim and Tom Tompkins; six nieces, Patty Cole, Deanna Ross, Anna Marie Katz, Mary Agnes Miller, Renee DiBacco and Anita Flanagan.; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Ross and Louise "Pippi" Metz.

Preceding him in death were four brothers, Julie, John, Guido and Carmen L. Ross; and four sisters, Anna Veronica Pase, Mary DiBacco, Antoinette Elizabeth Colabrese and Frances Triplett.

He was a graduate of Coalton High School with the class of 1945, was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, was a coal miner for the Silvester's and Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore, Md., and retired from Lever Brothers in Baltimore, Md., in 1990. He was a lifelong member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church at Coalton and was an avid sports fan.

Dollie C. Fansler

Dollie Cozette Howell Phares Fansler, 94, a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center where she had been a patient since 2003, died at 4:50 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2009, in the center.

Dollie was born on Aug. 23, 1914, at Bowden, a daughter of Delphia and William Howell, who preceded her in death.

She was twice married. On Dec, 1, 1935, she married Hansel E. Phares, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 11, 1962, she married Howard E. Fansler, who preceded her in death in 2002.

Dollie is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Patricia A. Johnson of Odenton, Md., and Avis and Guy Ryan of Elkins; three stepchildren, Vickie Ward and husband, Charlie, of Beverly, Bill Fansler and wife, Louella, of California, and Betty Gear of Maryland; and four granddaughters, Kimberly A. Johnson Eisenstein of Riva, Md., Pamela L. Ryan Hinzman and husband, Fred, of Elkins, Kandis M. Johnson Blackmon of Bowie, Md., and Kathryn S. Johnson Barts and husband, Tim, of Churchton, Md. In addition, Dollie is survived by six great-grandchildren, whom she adored, Brittany and Bethany Eisenstein, Brooke Hinzman, Dylan and Darren Blackmon and Emma Barts. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by several siblings, Wade H. Howell, Mary M. Howell, Martha L. Howell Fuller, Willie W. Howell, Dovie L. Howell Powers, Straudie G. Howell Smith, Claude R. Howell, Wilbert W. Howell and Rita Howell Vance; one son-in-law, Ralph Edward Johnson; and two stepchildren.

Dollie attended the schools of Randolph County and was employed for 25 years as a licensed practical nurse at Davis Memorial Hospital.

She loved to travel and for 16 years made her winter home in Vero Beach, Fla.. She enjoyed knitting and embroidery. Dollie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins.

On Monday, he will be moved to the First United Methodist Church where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley, the Rev. Barry R. Moll and the Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley will officiate and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Nina J. Hull

Nina Jane Hull, 72, of St. George, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the Barbour County Good Samaritan Society in Belington.

She was born Jan. 3, 1937, in Terra Alta, a daughter of the late Arlie O. and Vivian Cupp Hull.

She enjoyed embroidery, word puzzles, coloring and spending time with family.

She is survived by a brother, William T. Hull of St. George; six nieces and nephews, Ray Sines, with whom she made her home, David Hull, Evelyn Stout, Robert Sines and John and Donna Hull; and several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary E. Sines.

Friends will be received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, Sunday, July 19, from noon until 2 p.m., the time of service, with Rev. Charles Preston officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountain Hospice, 1600 Crim Ave., Belington, W.Va. 26250.
