Bella A. Reece

Bella Ann Reece, infant daughter of Nicholas Reece and Julia Marie Broschart, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by maternal grandmother, Pat Coen and husband Mike, of Elkins; paternal grandparents, Mitch and Sue Reece of Elkins and Linda Whitson of Stafford, Va.; maternal stepgrandmother, Kathy Broschart of Elkins; paternal great-grandmothers, Doris Jack of Elkins and Cora Alice Whitson of Harrisonburg, Va.; aunts and uncles, Roger and Susie Boatwright, Willie and Gerri Jones, Kevin and Dawnie Chewning, Janae and Steven Daigle, Samantha Schramm and Otis Cutshaw, Shannon and Patrick Wilfong, Rebecca, Jaimie and Rachel Schramm, cousins, Kiersten and Tyler Daigle and Mason Cutshaw, Christopher and Tanner Boatwright, Dustin and Garrett Chewning , Casey Jones, and Step-uncle Patrick Robinson.

Also preceding her in death were her maternal grandfather, Donald Broschart; and maternal great-grandparents, William and Marie Broschart.

A private graveside service was conducted May 15 at the Phillips Cemetery at Jimtown. The Rev. Ann Fretwell officiated and interment followed.

Charles E. Miller

Mr. Charles E. Miller, 91, of Mt. Clare, passed away at 9:20 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family, following an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 12, 1917, at Rowelsburg, WV, a son of the late George W. Miller and Della Mae Lewis Miller.

His wife, Luella P. Starr Miller, whom he married June 21, 1940, preceded him in death Nov. 30, 2001.

Charles was the last surviving member of his immediate family of eleven children. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Winifred Miller, Genevieve Zearly, Anna B. Johnson, Bonnie Proudfoot, and Mildred Minehart; and his brothers. Dale Miller, Archie Miller, William Miller, Walter Miller and James Miller.

Surviving are his six children, Marlea Wheeler and her husband, Jim, of Elkins, Cookie Parsons and her husband, Lynn, of Stonewood, Charlene McCall and her husband, Rodney, of Good Hope, Jeanne Wyne of Fairmont, Chuck Miller and his wife, Cheryl, of Mt. Clare and Janice Cawthon and her husband, Larry, of Mt. Clare. Surviving grandchildren include, David Wheeler and wife, Sherry, of Elkins, Brian Wheeler and wife, Wendy, of Elkins, Jeff Parsons and wife, Ann Marie, of Fairmont, Andrea Price and husband, David, of Fairview, Julie Price and husband, Brian, of Fairview, Scott Wyne and wife, Jennifer, of Smyrna, Ga., Jennifer Wyne of Fairmont, Shelly Lehew of Fairmont, Caitlin Miller of Mt. Clare, Eric Cawthon of Mt. Clare and Jason Cawthon and wife, Colleen, of Anmoore; and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to his sisters and brothers, Charles was also preceded in death by a grandson, Harold Edward Wyne.

Charles was a long time member of the Mt. Clare United Methodist Church. He hosted Bible study, served on the administration council and played the guitar and sang for worship services. He worked for six years in the mines and a short time at a Matthews Brothers ESSO service station in downtown Clarksburg. He then began a career in funeral home service at Davis and Davis-Weaver Funeral Homes. His greatest pleasure was working in his garden, his flowers and his many antiques. He was very involved with obtaining the connections and the paperwork for the water lines in his town of Mt. Clare. He was also active in the Harrison County Senior Center, Mt. Clare Satellite.

Friends may call at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, where funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 20, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rodney Heckert presiding. Interment will follow in Lost Creek Seventh Day Baptist Church Cemetery.

Herman Watson Sr.

Herman Eugene Watson Sr., 62, a resident of Elkins, started his eternal life with the Lord on Thursday, May 14, 2009.

He was born Oct. 28, 1946, at Beverly, a son of the late Silas and Edna Marie Bennett Watson.

On July 15, 1978, he was married to Irene Coberly Watson, who survives in Elkins.

Also surviving are two sons, Herman Eugene "Dean" Watson Jr. and Adam Ray Watson and fiancee, Rachel, all of Elkins; one daughter, Bridgette Irene Phillips and husband, Chuck, of Elkins; and five grandchildren, Chelsea and Hannah Watson, Jordan, Abigail and Alexis Phillips. Three sisters, Arlene Knick and husband, Kenneth, of Valley Bend, Darlene Scott and husband, William, of Dailey and Glenda Hedrick and husband, William, of Elkins also survive.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Robert "Bob" Watson and Danny Ray Watson.

Herman attended the schools of Randolph County and was a carpet installer for Classic Floor Coverings at the time of his death. He was a member of the Gospel Light Tabernacle Church and served as guitarist and song leader at the church. Herman enjoyed walking, playing music, camping, playing with his grandchildren and joking with friends and family. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. A.H. Belt officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.

Janet T. Cassell

Janet Tallman Cassell, 70, of Cass, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Pocahontas Memorial Hospital

Born Feb. 15, 1939, at Durbin, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Florence Malcomb Tallman.

Janet was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church on Back Mountain.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Cassell; a half sister, Anna Mae Boothe; and a half brother, James Wolford.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel Cleveland Cassell of Cass; one daughter, Edwina Garber and husband, Mike, of Arbovale; one son, Ryan Cassell of Cass; two grandchildren, Erica Arbogast and Brandon Cassell; and one sister, Louise Bennett of St. Albans.

Visitation will be at Bethel United Methodist Church Tuesday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour with the Rev. Frank Naglic officiating. Interment will be in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Boyd V. Miller

Boyd Virgil Miller, 64, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at his home.

He was born Mary 20, 1944, at Kelly Mountain, a son of the late Henry and Martha E. Shaw Miller.

On June 28, 1968, he married Eloise Collins, who preceded him in death Oct. 2, 2005.

He is survived by his life long friends, Ted and Connie Tenney of Ellamore; one son, Brian Robert Miller and wife, Jessica, Of Connecticut; two daughters, Angela Faye Miller of Elkins and Tammy Lynn Miller of Florida; three grandsons, Andrew Miller, James Miller and Trystan McFarlon; five granddaughters, Briana Miller, Miranda McFarlon, Cynthia Williams, Gaberella Miller and Santanna Walford; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Jerry R. Miller and wife, Connie, of Valley Bend; four sisters, Betty Pritt and husband, Ervin, of Ohio, Margaret Brooks and husband, Phil, of Valley Bend; Evelyn Isenhart of Akron, Ohio, and Marylin Posey of Mill Creek; two brothers-in-law; Roger Collins of Elkins and Harry Lambert o Mabie; two sisters-in-law, Esther Shannon and Eula Smith of Elkins; and his father-in-law, Archie Collins of Elkins.

Mr. Miller was a coal miner for Beth Energy. He was a Methodist by faith, enjoyed gardening, raising roses and fishing.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at Mountain State Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Herman D. Jones officiating.

Mildred G. Siler

Mildred Gladys Ferguson Folks Siler, 91, a former resident of East Dailey and more recently, a resident of Colonial Place, departed this life late Saturday evening, May 16, 2009, in the nursing home.

She was born Tuesday, Feb. 12, 1918, at Alexander, Upshur County, a daughter of the late Harry Lloyd Ferguson and Ada Amelia Arnold Ferguson.

She was twice married. First on Feb. 8, 1936, at Elkins, to Walter Adam Folks, who preceded her in death May 19, 1982. Second, during January of 1983, at Valley Bend, to Charles Leonard Siler, who preceded her in death Aug. 13, 1995.

Surviving are one stepson, Charles Leonard "Bennie" Siler II of Elkins; and two stepdaughters, Mary Cecelia Higgins of Elkins and Connie Goodwin and husband, Thomas, of Middlebourne; and a special niece, Marie Hill.

Preceding her in death were one brother, Harry Lloyd Ferguson; four sisters, Mertis Click, Vera Maude Burnside, Hester Musselman and Martha Ferguson; three half brothers, Jack, Clayton and Charles Coffman; and one half sister, Iona Harbours.

She was a graduate of Pickens High School with the class of 1946, was a homemaker and had played piano in various churches since age 14. She was a member of the Dailey-Valley Bend Extension Homemakers Club for 50 years, the Delphia Rebakah Lodge 62, the Randolph Temple 77 Pythian Sisters, the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center, where she was a member of the Melody Chorus and the Dailey United Methodist Church which is now the Valley Bend United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Wednesday, May 20, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Donald L. Fitzwater will officiate and interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville.

Anne C., Denison

Anne Catherine Denison, 82, a longtime resident of Holly Meadows, Parsons and more recently a resident of Elkins Manor, departed this life Monday afternoon, Dec. 29, 2008, in Monongalia General Hospital at Morgantown.

A memorial mass will be conducted at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Thursday, May 21, at 11 a.m. Fr. Timothy Grassi will officiate. Interment of Anne's cremains will take place on Monday, June 1, at 11 a.m. in the Aurora Cemetery at Aurora.

Dale G. Canter

Dale Gay Canter, 61, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Hospice Care Inpatient Center in Elkins.

He was born Feb. 14, 1948, at Wyatt, a son of the late Dennie Madison and Elizabeth Riffle Canter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, William, Jack, Edward, Gale, Fredrick, John and Robert Canter; and four sisters, Elma, Ellen, Gladys and Eli Canter.

He is survived by two sons, Noah James Canter and Daniel Lee Canter of Buckhannon; one daughter, Stephanie Ann Canter of Weston; two grandsons, Samuel Canter and Daniel Canter of Buckhannon; four sisters, Shelva Jean Claypool, Josephene "Jote" Fitzgerald, Betty Lois Bowman and Trecia Jane Lowther, all of Buckhannon; and one brother, Roger "Doc" Canter of Buckhannon.

Mr. Canter worked as a general labor for North Carolina Heat Treating Plant. He was a member of the Order of the Eagles and the Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598. He also enjoyed dancing.

Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Friday, May 22, from noon until 2 p.m., the funeral hour with Evangelist David Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Church Cemetery at Hodgesville.

James H. Crites Jr.

James "Jamie" H. Crites Jr., 45, a resident of Philippi, and a former resident of Beverly, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009, in Mansfield Place of Broaddus Hospital.

He was born Dec. 29, 1963, at Philippi, a son of James H. Sr. and Hazel (Malcolm) Crites, who survive.

Also surviving is one sister, Tena and husband, Howard "Cliff" Pritt, of Beverly.

Jamie was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Virginia Crites; and biological mother, Doris Mae Beeson.

Jamie worked as a cook for Philippi Inn and Applebee's in Bridgeport. He loved working in the garden and flowers and enjoyed the outdoors. Jamie was a Protestant by faith.

Friends were received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi on Tuesday and will be received today from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour with speaker Lewis Bartlett officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.

Martha G. Craft

Martha G. Craft, 87, of Soldotna, Alaska, died Monday, May 11, 2009, in Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna.

Her ashes will be buried in the Nome Cemetery in Nome, Alaska.

Mrs. Craft was born Dec.15, 1921 to James Crawford and Sadie May (Kane) Gum in Cass.

She attended high school and furthered her education by attending clerical school in West Virginia. Mrs. Craft moved to Annette Island, Alaska, in 1949 and then to Nome, Alaska, in 1950. While in Nome, she worked for the Miner's and Merchant's Bank as a cashier.

In 1968, she moved back to West Virginia where she worked for Davis Electrical in Elkins until she retired. Mrs. Craft moved to Soldotna, Alaska, in 2005 where she resided until her death. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi in Nome and West Virginia. Nome Women's Club where she was appointed to the Alaska Commission on the status of Women in 1966 by Gov. Bill Egan and again in 1967 by Gov. Walter Hickel. Martha enjoyed knitting; she won many ribbons at the West Virginia State Fair. She also loved gardening, canning her fruits and vegetables and playing bridge.

The family wrote, "She was instrumental in starting the hot lunch program in the public school in Nome. She volunteered at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins and was named volunteer of the year in 2001."

Mrs. Craft was preceded in death by her son, David Craft; parents; and sister, Margaret Francher.

She is survived by her son, Joel Craft Sr. and his wife, Esther, of Soldotna, Alaska; sister, Virginia McCauley and her husband, Jack, of Maryland; granddaughters, Annette Burcham and her husband Aaron, of Soldotna, Alaska, and Martha Ellington and her husband, Michael, of Nome, Alaska; grandsons, Roy Craft of Anchorage, Alaska, and Joel Craft Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Nome, Alaska; great-grandchildren, Aiden Craft, Whitney Burcham, McKinna Craft, Danika Craft, Colton Godfrey, Koryne Godfrey, Madison Ellington and Carly Ellington; and many nieces and nephews.

Reva A. Kisamore

Reva Ann Kisamore, 77, of Riverton, died May 17, 2009, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 12, 1931, at Onego, a daughter of the late Denver Raines and Margie Harper Raines.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, William Carl Kisamore, on April 20, 1991.

Surviving are one son, Timothy David Kisamore and wife, Lucy, of Onego; six grandchildren, Loretha Stump of Cabins, Jeremy Kisamore of Riverton, Melissa Mongold of Cabins, Larry Shane Kisamore of Riverton, Ashley Kisamore of Springfield, Va., and Lindsay Kisamore of Riverton; 11 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Peggy Hall Kisamore of Riverton; one sister, Dorothy Wolfe and husband, Robert, of Martinsburg; three brothers, Morris Raines of Beverly, Elton Raines of Cabins and Jerry Raines and wife, Lorraine, of Seneca Rocks; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Carl Kisamore Jr. and Larry Allan Kisamore; and one great-grandson, Edwin Hall.

She was a homemaker and farmer.

Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin where funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Earl Bible officiating. Interment will be in U.G. Mallow Cemetery at Riverton.

Vernon M. Hart

Vernon Monroe Hart, 66, of Lost Creek, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born Dec. 16, 1942, at Baltimore, Md., a son of the late Grover and Beulah Rucker Hart.

His is survived by a daughter, Carrie Dawn Hart and fiance, Chris Cox, of Nutter Fort; a son, Robert Monroe Hart of Lost Creek; a grandson, Christopher LaDainian Cox of Nutter Fort; a brother, Thomas Hart and wife, Marie, of Morgantown; a sister, Shirley Bunner and husband, Hobert, of Bridgeport; three aunts, Willia Jean Caynor of Buckhannon, Lou Hart of Elkins and Willa Waybright of Baltimore; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a teacher in Harrison County and was awarded membership in the National Leadership Honor Society Omicron Delta Kappa from West Virginia Wesleyan College. He graduated West Virginia Wesleyan College with a bachelor's degree in English and received a master' degree plus 30 in English from West Virginia University.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 25, in Sand Run Baptist Church Cemetery in Excelsior with the Rev. Donald Butcher officiating.

Walter S. Davis

Walter Scott Davis, 49, of Mt. Croghan, S.C., passed away Jan. 5, 2009.

He was born April 25, 1959, the son of Walter Samuel Davis and Jean (Ritchie) Davis.

Scott was the youngest man ever in the 501st to make staff sergeant - he was 22 years old. He served in the U.S. Army for eight and half years. Four years in Panama Canal, four years in Ft. Campbell, Ky., and six months in Egypt with the Observers as a peace keeper. His favorite past time was spending time with grandchildren and family. Other interest included reading and watching John Wayne movies.

Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Waveline Perry Davis, his children of the home, Brianna and Chandra Davis, and his son, Walter Samuel Perry and wife, Nancy Dupre', of Pageland, S.C., and two granddaughters, Amber Perry and Hailey Davis of the home; and daughter Chelle and her husband, Chris Tulley, and grandchildren, Cammie and Lexie, all of Madison; his father, Walter Samuel Davis of Buckhannon; mother, Jean and husband, Jim Cleaver, of Fairmont; brother, James and wife, Melissa Davis, of Buckhannon; sister, Janine L. and husband, David Barr, of Daybrook; half brother, Steven Rosalyn of Godmanschester, England; half sister, Jessica Davis of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his younger brother, Shannon L. Davis.

Memorial services for Walter Scott Davis will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 22, in The Grafton National Cemetery.

Aurel Shaffer

Aurel Louise Shaffer, 89, died May 7, 2009, in Knox Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted at the Valley Bend Baptist Church in Belington on May 29 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Joseph Bowman officiating. She will be interned beside her husband, Alvey B. Shaffer Sr. and son Charles Wayne Shaffer, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Shaffer was born Sept. 22, 1919, in Belington, to Opha and Bessie Chenoweth. She was the oldest of five children, three sisters and one brother, Martha Mason (deceased), Loretta Coontz of West Virginia, Jean Holbert of West Virginia, and Carl "Bud" Chenoweth (deceased).

Mrs. Shaffer was wed to Alvey B. Shaffer Sr. on Sept. 13, 1949 and started a family. They moved from West Virginia to Ohio in 1960, and she worked in Loudonville, Ohio. at the Haven of Rest Nursing Home for several years. After taking a job in Holmesville, Ohio at Addressograph-Multigraph and working as an assistant foreman, she attended and graduated from nursing school in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. She remained employed for 14 years at Addressograph-Multigraph until retiring in 1982.

She was always deeply devoted to the Lord and regularly read her Bible and attended church. She enjoyed working with her hands and always kept busy. Among her favorite things to do were crocheting, crossword puzzles, scrabble, music and reading. She also loved gardening and fishing. It was often said by people who knew her that they came away with a better feeling after talking with her.

She is survived by three children, a son, Alvey B. Shaffer Jr. of Ohio, son, the Rev. Dewey L. Shaffer and spouse, Norene, of Oklahoma, and daughter, Barbara J. Hinds Ohio; five grandchildren, Michelle Kelly and husband, John, of Ohio, Annette Thacker and husband, Brett, of Ohio, Adam Shaffer and wife, Michel, of Oklahoma, Amy Shaffer of Oklahoma, and Bill Hinds and wife, Leah, of Ohio; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and cousins and friends who will all miss her very much.

Kathryn L. Calain

Kathryn Louise Jones Calain, 78, a resident of First Street, Elkins, departed this life Wednesday morning, May 20, 2009, at her home.

Death was unexpected.

Lucille Eloise Shaffer Brushingham, 85, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, May 20, 2009, in the Hospice Care Inpatient Center at Elkins.

Marner Smith

Marner Smith, 88, a former resident of Randolph County, and more recently a resident of Perry, Fla., departed this life Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Perry, Fla.

He was born Thursday, Dec. 23, 1920 ,at Harding, the only son of Grover and Alecia R. Stout Smith.

He was twice married, first to Wanda Huffman Smith, who preceded him in death on April 4, 1966. Second, to Ruby Wilson Smith, who survives at Perry, Fla.

Also surviving him are two daughters, Darlene Roy and husband, Danny, and Alecia Koontz and husband, Hobert, all of Elkins; one son, Michael Smith and wife, Linda, of Perry, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Linda Shipp of Perry, Fla.; two stepsons, E. Leon Huffman and wife, Marie, of Elkins and David Smith and wife, Linda, of Stow, Ohio; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and 1 stepgreat-grandchild.

Marner was a graduate of Elkins High School and a graduate of Davis & Elkins College with the class of 1947, had served the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific, Philippine Liberation and American Theatre.

He had retired from the Randolph County Health Department, was a sanitarian with the state of Florida Bevard County Health Department, had retired from Taylor Public Health Unit as environmental health director for the county, Perry, Fla., and former co-owner with his wife, Ruby, of Gandy Motor Lodge, Perry, Fla.

He had served as post commander for the H. W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion, was a member of the Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the V.F.W. post in Perry, Fla., and was a member of the Kiwanians at Perry, Fla. He was a devoted husband, dad and granddad to his family and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and was a big fan of West Virginia University and Florida State.

The family will receive friends at Biggs Funeral Home at Perry, Fla. today from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May, 22, in Pineview Cemetery at Perry, Fla.

Virgil Daughterty

Virgil Henry Daugherty, 50, a resident of Route 1, Philippi, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at the home of his sister, Kathy Shahan.

He was born May 10, 1959, at Philippi, a son of Eugene Daugherty and the late Betty H. (Harris) Daugherty.

Surviving are two sisters, Beverly Longo of Wyoming, and Kathy and husband, Robert Shahan, of Philippi; and three brothers, David and wife, Melinda Farris, of Oregon, Tom and wife, Nina Farris, of Florida, and Michael and wife, Cecelia Daugherty, of Clarksburg.

Mr. Daugherty was preceded in death by one son, John Daugherty.

Mr. Daugherty was a construction worker and farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, and loved the outdoors. Mr. Daugherty was a member of the Union Church of Christ.

Virginia Shipman

Virginia Lee Channell Shipman, 90 years and 11 months, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Pataskala Oaks Care Center in Pataskala, Ohio, surrounded by family members in attendance.

Virginia was born in Randolph County June 17, 1918 to Grady and Bessie Channell.

On April 13, 1937 with the Rev. O. Afton Linger presiding at the First Baptist Church in Elkins, she was united in marriage to Harley Shipman, who preceded her in death on April 18, 1956.

They resided in Bergoo where they enjoyed their married life raising three daughters, Margaret Coyner, the oldest daughter, of Mt Airy, N.C., and Patty Lou Condry and Frances Kay Rightmire, who preceded her in death in 2000 and 2003 respectively. Virginia was also preceded in death by her long time companion, Leon "Fitz" Fitzpatrick, in 2002. Virginia is also survived by her brother, Paul Channell and wife, Gladys, of Elkins; and her other siblings preceding her in death were, Pauline Kuckenbrod, Bobby Channell, Betty Gainer, Beulah Ferguson and Richard Neal Channell. Virginia is survived by two granddaughters, Annette Coyner and two great-grandchildren of Mt Airy, N.C., and April Rogers and husband, Jason, and great-granddaughters, Kayla Sheffield and Casey Kay all of Thornville, Ohio, and son-in-law, Charles Rightmire.

After moving to Elkins in 1956, Virginia worked as a sales associate at the Montgomery Ward Store and at the Family Drug Store prior to joining "Fitz" in many lumber related business ventures. Virginia enjoyed being a mother, really enjoyed being a grandmother and thoroughly enjoyed being a great-grandmother. Virginia loved being around her family, enjoyed going to parties and the many dances held around the Elkins area. Virginia was an excellent cook; she cooked not only the various meat and taters dinners but also became a great chef of numerous seafood dishes. Virginia was also well traveled, visiting many locales throughout the United States as well as destinations in Europe. She loved being around people and was a grand lady right up until her passing. Although she lived in Ohio for a short period (2006), she won the hearts of the many caregivers at Chapel Grove Inn Assisted Living and Pataskala Oaks. She lived a long life and enjoyed every minute of it right up until the end. She will be greatly missed and loved by many surviving family members and friends.

William Gilroy Jr.

William Harold "Bill" Gilroy Jr., 76, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Tuesday evening, May 19, 2009, in the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington. He had been in declining health for the past three years.

He was born Friday, May 27, 1932, at Akron, Ohio, a son of the late William Harold Gilroy and Rena Myrtle Vanscyoc Gilroy.

During March of 1953, at Akron, Ohio, he was married to the former Mary Alice Everett, who survives.

Also surviving are twin sons, Daniel Aaron Gilroy and Elaine of Lower Cheat, Elkins and Donald Erwin Gilroy and wife, Anita, of Valley Bend; and one grandson, Noah Keith Gilroy of Valley Bend.

Preceding him in death was one infant daughter, Cynthia Marie Gilroy.

Bill was a graduate of West High School at Akron, Ohio, was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a corporal in the Korean Conflict, was a master electrician, loved working with sheet metal and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Fern A. Graham

Fern Arvona Arbogast Graham, 83, a resident of South Davis Avenue, Elkins, departed this life Thursday morning, May 21, 2009, in the Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Monday, July 6, 1925, at Glady, a daughter of the late Theodore S. Arbogast and Violet R. Wilhelm Arbogast.

On Dec. 31, 1965. at Oakland, Md., she was married to William E. Graham, who preceded her in death July 11, 1988.

Surviving are five nephews, William, Robert, Michael, Kevin and Lawrence; four nieces; Karen, Joyce, Carolyn and Patty.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Max W. and Lawrence Arbogast; and one nephew, Jerry.

She attended the schools of Glady and was a graduate of Elkins High School. She was a homemaker.

Kathryn Louise Jones Calain, 78, a resident of First Street, Elkins, departed this life Wednesday morning, May 20, 2009. at her home. Death was unexpected.

She was born Sunday, Oct. 12, 1930, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Thomas Dewey Jones and Hazel Phares Jones.

Surviving are one son, Edward H. Calain and special friend, Karen Harper, of Elkins; two grandchildren, Kimberly Dawn and David Shawn Calain of Elkins; two brothers, Robert Richard Jones and wife, Linda, of Tallahassee, Fla. and William A. Jones of Ocala, Fla.; one sister, Carol L. Erickson and husband, Carl "Shorty," of Elkins; five nephews, Christopher A. Erickson and wife, Staci, of Auburn, Wash., Jeffrey S. Erickson and Andrea Moroz of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Ricky Jones, Ryan Jones and Greg Jones, all of Tallahassee, Fla.; two nieces, Karla L. Mahanes and husband, Shawn, of Elkins and Jeannie Beth Rivera of Tallahassee, Fla.; three great-nephews, Travis Jones and Chase Rivera of Tallahasee, Fla., and Braydon Jones of Texas; two great-nieces, Aleah River of Tallahassee, Fla. and Mackenzie Jones of Texas; a very special great-niece, Gabrielle H. Mahanes of Elkins; and her special children for whom she provided child care, Tyler Gray and Cameron Zirbs.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Harold "Fuzz" Jones and Thomas E. Jones; and three sisters, Harriett Delynne, Charlotte Ann, and Irene "Reeney" Kisner.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1949, had worked for C&P Telephone Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of the John Hart Chapter Daughter's of the American Revolution, Elkins High School Alumni Association, Telephone Pioneers, First United Methodist Church and a life member of the H. W. Daniel's Unit 29, American Legion Auxiliary.

Lucille Eloise Shaffer Brushingham, 85, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, May 20, 2009, in the Hospice Care Inpatient Center at Elkins.

She was born Friday, Aug. 24, 1923, at Hammond, a daughter of the late Truman Shaffer and Lula Vincent Shaffer.

On July 3, 1944, at Boston, Mass., she was married to Edward Parker Brushingham, who preceded her in death Jan. 18, 1977.

Surviving are one son, Carl Brushingham of Elkins; one sister, Hallie Williams of Fairmont; one brother-in-law, Jack Moran of Elkins; and one sister-in-law, Gertrude Shaffer of Grafton.

Preceding her in death are three brothers, Ralph, Carl and Kenneth Shaffer; and four sisters, Edith Griffith, Goldie Moran, Wilma Jean Shaffer and Nola Shaffer.

Lucille attended the Quiet Dell School and was a graduate of East Farimont High School. She was a homemaker and worked for the G. C. Murphy Co. for many years.

Marilyn C. Phillips

Marilyn C. Phillips, 70, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, in Serenity Care Home under the care of St. Joseph's Hospice.

She was born May 1, 1939, at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Remson and Naomi Wamsley Cutright.

On Aug. 12, 1955, she married Don Phillips, who preceded her in death Aug. 20, 2000, after 45 years of marriage.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela C. Phillips; and one sister, Patricia Eileen Fincham.

She is survived by two sons, Michael and Timothy Phillips of Buckhannon; two grandsons, Bradley Phillips of Charleston, S.C., and Matthew E. Phillips of Mill Creek; two sisters, Sharon Channel of Newton Falls, Ohio, and Linda Smith and husband, Keith, of Cleveland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Phillips was retired after 23 years as a cashier for the Kroger store in Buckhannon. She was a homemaker and Protestant by faith.

Bessie M. Mayle

The Rev. Bessie Mildred Mayle, 78, of Brownton died Friday, May 22, in Broaddus Hospital following an extended illness.

She was born June 27, 1930, at Parcoal in Webster County, a daughter of the late Flavius Benjamin and Mary Inez (Mayle) Slussar.

On Dec. 29, 1948, she was married to Selvy "Sib" Mayle, who preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2001.

Surviving are one son, Selvy Mayle Jr. and wife, Deloris "Dee" Mayle, of Laurel, Del.; two daughters, the Rev. Ruth Higginbotham and husband, the Rev. Ross Higginbotham, of Lumberport and Mary Ann Moore and husband, the Rev. George Moore, of Lincoln, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Joshua Eric Mayle and Michelle Lynn Collins; one sister, Naomi Pearl Slussar; and four brothers, Robert Slussar, Alvin Slussar, Amon "Buddy" Slussar and Roscoe Slussar.

The Rev. Mayle had served as pastor of the Cowen Pentecostal Church of God, The Brownton Pentecostal Church of God (now Brownton Pentecostal Lighthouse) and the Fountain of Love Ministries at Galloway. She had also been employed as a cook for Webster County Schools.

She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God Ladies Ministries and loved to evangelize. She was an excellent cook and had, for more than 40 years, cooked for the Pentecostal Church of God Youth Camps at Selbyville, Grafton and Rupert and the Pentecostal Church of God Camp Meeting Convention at Rupert. She also enjoyed many hobbies.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St., Philippi. The Rev. Tom Jones and the Rev. Patty Post will officiate. Interment will follow in the Flemington IOOF Cemetery.

Dorthy Arbogast

Dorthy Louise Arbogast, 71, of Valley Head, entered into eternal life at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2009, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born Monday, March 9, 1938, in Mill Creek, a daughter of the late George and Hannah Mae McCune Blankenship.

Dorthy attended the schools of Randolph County. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and made several quilts. She loved flower gardening and enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She attended Grace Ministries in Valley Head.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Jim Blankenship; and one sister, Laura Tiffner.

Dorthy's survivors include six sons, William Harold Arbogast and wife, Vonda, of Hillsboro, Ray Allen Arbogast of McDowell County, Harold Lee Arbogast and wife, Marsha, of Valley Head, Leroy James Arbogast and wife, Melinda, of Elkins, Gary Lynn Arbogast and wife, Angie, of Valley Head, and Randall Keith Arbogast and wife, Susie, of Valley Head; one daughter, Barbara Moore and husband, Lynn, of Valley Head; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Eddie Blankenship of Huttonsville; two sisters, Mary Jane Bennett of Dartmore and Lorraine Yokum and husband, Keith, of Huttonsville.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 26, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Grace Ministry in Valley Head. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. at Grace Ministries with Todd Corley officiating.

Burial will follow in Valley Head Cemetery at Valley Head.

Linda Kaye Holliday, 58, a resident of Bowden, departed this life Thursday evening, May 21, 2009, at the Connecticut Hospice at Branford, Conn.

She was born Sunday, Jan. 21, 1951, at Scarboro, a daughter of the late Master Sgt. James Delbert "Doc" Holliday and Frances Kesler Holcomb Holliday, who survives at Bowden.

Also surviving are one son, James C. Crichfield and companion, Tausha Gilley, of Elkins; two brothers, Richard William Holcomb, of Charleston and Michael Eugene Holcomb and wife, Katherine, of North Haven, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death in 2006 was her twin sister Brenda H. Bray.

Linda was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion Auxiliary and the Aerie No. 2344 Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary. She was an independent spirit; she always did things in her own way and her own time. She was an avid Washington Redskin fan and she loved working in her flower garden. She had been employed at Elkins Builders Supply Co.

Martha J. Mitchell

Martha J. Mitchell, 86, a resident of the Arden community, Philippi, and a resident for the past four and a half years at Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, in United Hospital Center.

She was born Dec. 13, 1922, at Moatsville, a daughter of the late Michael and Della (Moats) McDermott.

She was united in marriage in 1947 to Curtis D. Mitchell, who preceded her in death May 22, 1965.

Surviving are two sons, Jerry D. Mitchell of the Arden community, Philippi, and Donald Keith Mitchell of Moatsville.

Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by one son, Daris J. Mitchell on April 14, 2004; one half sister, Doris Davis; and one half brother, Kelso Moats.

Mrs. Mitchell was a homemaker, a member of the Grafton Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, a 40-year member of the Pleasant Creek Community Education Outreach Service and a lifetime member of the Arden and Fairview United Methodist churches. She loved gardening and the crafts at the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, and she especially loved her family.

Timothy D. Streets

Timothy Dale Streets, 46, of the Valley Furnace Community, Route 2, Philippi, died unexpectedly on Thursday, May 21, near his home.

He was born Oct. 25, 1962, at Montrose, Tucker County, a son of the late Robert Brown and Mary Gladys (Jones) Streets.

Survivors include two sisters, Peggy Hebb and husband, Robert, of Flatwoods and Mary Woods of Parsons; three brothers, Charles Murphy and Larry Streets, both of Parsons, and Samuel Claude Streets and wife, Mary Lou, of Valley Furnace; and a sister-in-law, Wanda Streets of Valley Furnace.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Streets and Roger Streets.

Mr. Streets was employed as a carpenter and plumber in the Winterization Program at North Central Community Action. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and gardening.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 25, from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St., Philippi. The Rev. Larry Poling will officiate and interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery near St. George.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., and on Monday, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Stemple & Forman Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.  From 23 May 2009.

William Gilroy Jr.

William Harold "Bill" Gilroy Jr., 76, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Tuesday evening, May 19, 2009, in the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington. He had been in declining health for the past three years.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins today from noon to 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Don Jacko will officiate and interment will follow in the Canfield Cemetery at Lower Cheat.
