Barbara G. Roy

Barbara Gutshall Roy, a resident of the Blackman Flats Community, Hambleton, departed this life Sunday afternoon, May 3, 2009, at her home. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected and attributed to cardiac arrest.

Carl F. Findley

Carl Franklin Findley, 59, of Grafton Road, Philippi, died Friday, May 1, 2009, at his home following a valiant battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 11, 1949, at Philippi, a son of the late Juel Finley and the late Cleopatra (Costillo) Finley.

On April 13, 1974, he married the former Kathern Louise Deckman, who survives on Grafton Road, Philippi.

Also surviving are one daughter, Charlotte Hunt of Philippi; two sons, Carl Franklin Findley Jr. of Flemington and Clifton Russell Findley of Philippi; three sisters, Mary Talkington and Corliss Talkington, both of Philippi and Betty Parks of Grafton; three brothers, John Finley and Danny Finley, both of Philippi and Juel J. Finley in Ohio; and 10 grandchildren, Angel, Katie, Christopher, Tompanga, Sara, Thomas, Jordan, Brook, Dessie and Josh.

Mr. Findley was an honorably discharged veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, serving in the Vietnam Conflict. He had been employed as a farm hand on the Poling Angus Farm. He was a member of Barbour County Post 44 American Legion, a life member of Memorial City Post 3081 Veterans of Foreign Wars at Grafton and was a former member of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St., Philippi. The Rev. Julie Miller, chaplain of Mountain Hospice, will officiate and interment with full military honors will follow in the West Virginia National Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour, on Tuesday.

Ina L. Shreve

Ina Lee Shreve, 83, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at her home under the care of People's Hospice.

She was born Jan. 18, 1926, at Kedron, a daughter of the late William and Lillie Maude Hornbeck Tallman.

On April 4, 1942, she married Enoch Ralph Shreve, who preceded her in death on July 26, 2004.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Dacie Holmes, Mary Tenney, Daris Swihart and Ruth Tallman; and six brothers, Hartzel, Steward, Morris "Bud," Wilson "Stub," Billie and James Tallman.

She is survived by three daughters, Jo Ann Hawkins and husband, Glen, of Rock Cave, Patty Bennett and husband, Darrell, of Buckhannon and Jodie Moran and husband, Terry, of Lexington, Ky.; two sons, Ralph Edward Shreve and wife, Carolyn, and Bobby Lee Shreve and wife, Linda, all of Buckhannon; one brother, Bobby Jo Tallman and wife, Dana, of Tallmansville; 11 granddaughters, Cheryl McCord and husband, Roger, of Bellevue, Neb., Debra South and husband, Mike, of Plattsmouth, Neb., Terri Woods and husband, Doug, of Warrenton, Va., Pam Queen and husband, Wayne, of Buckhannon, Shirley Corder and husband, Bob, of Clarksburg, Chanda Loan and husband, Jason, of Buckhannon, Gail Widmer and husband, Matthew, of Lexington, Jesse Hammond and husband, Eron, of Youngsville, N.C.; Andrea Hesson and husband, Scott, of Eustis, Fla., Shelley Roberts and husband, Lindsey, of Lexington and Tracey Moran of West Virginia Wesleyan College; six grandsons, Robert "Bubba" Shreve and wife, Melanie, of Buckhannon, Chris Shreve and wife, Shalom, of Bellingham, Wash., Wes Hawkins and wife, Barb, of Rock Cave, Wayne Hawkins and wife, Joy, of Raleigh, N.C., Dale Hawkins and wife, Dauna, of Weston and Darrell Bennett Jr. and wife, Patti, of Trinity, N.C.; 26 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Mrs. Shreve was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith. She was a member of Almost Heaven's Red Hatters of Rock Cave at the age of 82. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, flowers and spending time with the family. Special thanks is given to her caregivers, Ellen Smith, Cathy Tallman and Trish Lantz.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Michael Tallman and the Rev. Douglas Tallman officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Herman Church Cemetery in Buckhannon.

Matthew Allen "Little Man" VanMeter, 2, of Cabins, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, in Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mya C. Jeran

Mya Cecelia Jeran, infant daughter of Robert Ryan and Denice D. Phillips Jeran of Buckhannon, died Friday, May 1, 2009, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one sister, Elly Jeran of Buckhannon; paternal grandparents, Robert R. and Robbyn Jeran of Buckhannon; maternal grandparents, Larry and Helen Phillips of Buckhannon; paternal great-grandparents, Robert H. and Ava Lee Jeran of Buckhannon; paternal great-grandfather, Charles Mansfield of Chester; and maternal great-grandparents, Sturl and Ruth Waybright of Buckhannon.

She was preceded in death by paternal great-grandmother, Mary Lou Mansfield; and maternal great-grandparents, Glen and Pauline (Rowan) Phillips.

Graveside services were conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Heavner Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Damon Rhodes officiating.

Robert D. Sandy

Robert Dennis "Denny" Sandy, 55, of Mt. Nebo, Buckhannon, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009, at 8:43 p.m., in the Cancer Treatment Centers of American in Zion, Ill., with his loving wife by his side.

Denny was born Dec. 8, 1953, son of the late Robert McKinley and Betty Ellen"Ball" Sandy.

He served his country in the military from July 21, 1972 until Aug. 8, 1978. In the U.S. Air Force, he was an aircraft maintenance specialist stationed at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, S.C., with the 354th OMS TAC Squadron. He was honorably discharged into the Air National Guard on Dec. 7, 1973 at the Charleston airport with a rank of E3. On Dec. 8, 1973, he was honorably discharged for the Air National Guard and transported to the Army National Guard in Buckhannon with the 119th Engineering Detachment as a heavy equipment operator with the rank of E4, where he was stationed until discharged from the military. At the age of 50, Denny continued his education in aviation maintenance at Fairmont State Technical College, which he did not have a chance to complete due to his illness. He was a skilled tradesman as well as an excellent mechanic, loving husband, father and grandfather.

Denny is survived by his wife of 29 years, Belenda Joy (White) Sandy, who he married on Aug. 31, 1979; two daughters, Chrissy Nichole Runk and Melanie Dawn Gillum of Buckhannon; one son, Stephan Eric of Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.; two grandsons, Jordan Kale Gillum and Koan McKinnley Runk; two granddaughters, Kasey Renae Gillum, who is deceased, and Channing Kalena Gillum, all of Buckhannon; one sister, Diane Elaine Conners of Litchfield, N.H.; and two nephews, John Robert of Salem, Mass., and James David Conners of Litchfield, N.H.

Friends and family will be received from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Frank Spears officiating. Burial will follow in the Kesling Cemetery.

Robert P. Kyle

Robert Phillip "Bob" Kyle, 53, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, in the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg.

He was born Aug. 11, 1955, at Cleveland, Ohio, a son of Virginia C. Zickefoose Kyle of Buckhannon and the late John W. Kyle Jr.

In addition to his mother, he is also survived by one brother, John W. Kyle III and his wife, Cathy, of Nutterfort; one sister, Patricia Ann Kyle of Parma, Ohio; and two nieces, Samantha and Jessica Russell of Parma, Ohio.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Lee Kyle.

Bob was a Christian by faith and had served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ralph Miller officiating. Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion and Disabled American Veterans Chapters 5 and 36 will conduct military honors at the graveside.

Ronald Paul White Flasher, Sr., 72, a resident of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away Thursday evening, April 30, 2009, in Fairview Hospital in Cleveland, surrounded by family and friends.

Barbara A. Roy

Barbara Ann Gutshall Roy, age 62 years, a resident of the Blackman Heights Community, Parsons, WV, departed this life Sunday afternoon, May 3, 2009, at her home. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected and attributed to cardiac arrest.

She was born Thursday, Dec. 12, 1946, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Rev. Meade L. Gutshall and Lorena Matthews Gutshall.

On Feb. 17, 1983, at Parsons, she was married to Harold D. Roy, who survives.

She is survived by several cousins.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1964, of which she was a member of the cheerleading squad. She attended West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon. She was a former employee of Mon Power for 32 years as a clerk. She was a former member of Parsons Chapter 91 Order of the Eastern Star and the Ruritan Club. She was a member of the Riverview Chapel Church at Porterwood. Barbara was known for her compassion and love for others. She was a devoted and loving wife and a lifelong Christian.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Wednesday, May 6, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Dick Gadd will officiate and interment will follow in the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Airport Road at Elkins.

Delbert E. "Deb" Bleigh, 61, of Route 1, Crawford, the Rock Cave Community, passed way Monday, May 04, 2009, at his home.

He was born Oct. 15, 1947, at Rock Cave.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ballard S. and Edith Sayre Bleigh, five half sisters and four half brothers

Surviving are his wife, Carrie McCartney Bleigh, who he married on Dec. 21, 1971; his son, Ronald D. Bleigh of Rock Cave; a special niece, Nicole Bailey; a special great-niece, Riley Bell; sister, Kate Bleigh Gower of Weston; five brothers, Hugh Bleigh and Nancy, his wife, of Ohio, Ralph Bleigh and Sharon, his wife, of Ohio, Don Bleigh and Mary, his wife, of Texas, Charles Bleigh and Lana, his wife, of Texas, and Jim Bleigh and Connie, his companion, of Weston; and two half brothers, Cleve Bleigh of Tennessee, and Bill Bleigh and Shirley, his wife, of Ohio.

Deb enjoyed junking and salvaging, fishing and hunting and was a Baptist by faith.

Roy J. Shreve

Roy James "Jimmy" Shreve, 61 a former resident of Elkins, and more recently a resident of the Fairmont Group Home at Fairmont, departed this life Sunday afternoon, May 3, 2009, in Fairmont General Hospital at Fairmont, following an extended illness.

He was born Monday, Jan. 5, 1948, in Barbour County, a son of the late Albert Perry "Dick" Shreve and Virgie Beryl Carpenter Shreve.

He had never married.

Surviving are two sisters, Rosalee Tolin of Elkins and Sandy Stalnaker of Philippi; two brothers, Albert "Dick" Shreve of Allan Junction and Lloyd "Pete" Shreve of Virginia.

Preceding him in death were three brothers, William David, Oscar Ray and Robert Paul Shreve.

Roy had attended the Adult Training Center at Elkins and the Elkins Church of the Brethren.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins Wednesday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment will follow in the Concord Cemetery at Belington.

Mary A. Hipp

Mary Alice Hipp, 72, of Elkins, passed away May 3, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born Nov. 2, 1936, at Davis, a daughter of the late Frederick Austin Cosner and Georgie Ellen Nelson.

Her husband, Weldon Leon Hipp Sr., preceded her in death.

Surviving are seven sons, Weldon Hipp Jr., Calvert Hipp Sr., Howard Hipp Sr., Wesley Hipp Sr. and Frederick Hipp Sr., all of Maryland, James Hipp Sr. and Douglas Hipp Sr., both of Pennsylvania; three daughters, Teresa Andrews and Helen Anthony of Florida, and Pamela Luckart of West Virginia; three brothers, Frederick A Cosner of Ohio, Robert L. Cosner of Maryland and Buddy Cosner of North Carolina; one sister, Barbara Summerfield of West Virginia; and 29 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker, Protestant by faith and enjoyed gospel music.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hinkle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7, at the funeral home with the Rev. Eli Hostetler officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Storm Cemetery.

Reta Staab, 83, of Dailey, formerly of Denver, Colo., entered into eternal life Monday, May 4, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Trudy A. Mahanes

Mrs. Trudy Elaine Mahanes, 52, a resident of Coalton, departed this life 8:05 p.m. Monday May 4, 2009, at her residence following a brief illness. Death was unexpected.

She was born March 9, 1957, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Charles Davis and Mona Hymes Mace.

In 1974, she was united in marriage to Andrew D. Mahanes, who survives at their residence in Coalton.

Children surviving include one daughter, Becky J. Higgins and husband, Shawn, of Coalton; two sons, Andrew D. Mahanes Jr. and wife, Shonnette, of Elkins and Bobby J. Mahanes and wife, Melissa, of Coalton; and six grandchildren, Katrina Mahanes, Deanna Higgins, Kelsey Mahanes, Macey Mahanes, Jacob Higgins and Dylan Mahanes. Surviving siblings include two sisters, Iris Joan Riffle and husband, Ed, of Coalton and Gail Sandella and husband, Joe, Ashtabula of Ohio; two brothers, Charles D. Mace Jr. of Coalton and Carl Leonard Mace and wife, Nancy, of Coalton; nieces and nephews, Jay, Mike, Johnny, Randy, David, Donald, Roxanne, Michelle, Michael, Paulette, Jimmy, Ragina and Carmen; and other relatives and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Jennifer A. Mahanes; one brother, Jerry Mace; one nephew, Terry Riffle; mother-in-law, Julie May Scott Mahanes; father-in-law, Ernest A. Mahanes; and one brother-in-law, Steven Lewis Mahanes.

Mrs. Mahanes enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, listening to Christian and gospel music, watching the satellite game channel, cooking for her family, Marlboro lights and Maxwell House coffee. She attended the schools of Randolph County and Geneva, Ohio, and was a homemaker.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to Mountain Hospice, the Rev. Roger Foster and wife, Birdie, Roger and Haley Riley, Margie Riley, John and Sharon Mahanes, Eddie and Kay Mahanes as well as all other nieces, nephews and other relatives for their care and support.

At the request of the deceased, her remains will be cremated. Memorial services will follow at a later date.

Edward Gatehouse

Mr. Edward George Gatehouse Sr., 71, a resident Nathan Street, Elkins, departed this life at 4:54 pm Tuesday, May 5, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. He had been in declining health for quite sometime.

He was born Sept. 1, 1937, at Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of the late Henry John and Marjorie Clouter Gatehouse.

On Oct. 15, 1960, he was united in marriage to Frances Mae Fuller, who survives at their residence in Elkins.

Children surviving include two daughters, Doreen Wasson and husband, William, of Elkins and Lenore Makson and husband, Robert, of Staten Island, N.Y.; two sons, Edward Gatehouse Jr. and wife, Alecia, of Elkins and James Gatehouse and wife, Christine, of Cairo, N.Y. Grandchildren surviving include Kaci and Cody Gatehouse, Amanda and Billy Wasson Jr., Heather and Darren Gatehouse Jr. and Matthew Gatehouse. Surviving siblings include one brother, Woodrow Gatehouse of New York.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Darren Gatehouse; and one brother, Henry Gatehouse.

Mr. Gatehouse attended the schools of New York and was formerly employed by the New York City Housing Authority as a boiler room operator.

He was a Protestant by faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, and cremation will follow.

Mary Sommerville

Mary Liguori Sommerville, 90, departed this life on May 5, 2009.

She was the daughter of James and Ruth Himes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Noel; and her sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Sterling Hall.

Mary graduated from Victory High School in 1936. She worked at the Hazel Atlas Glass factory and finished her working experience as a cook for the Harrison County Public Schools.

Mary was a life member of Christ Church United Methodist in Adamston. She was a member of the Women's Society, adult Sunday school, adult choir and was the children's choir director for many years. She also worked with the church dinners, combining two of her favorite activities, church and cooking.

Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Helena Sommerville of Maryland; stepdaughter and husband, the Rev. Rhoda and Amil Anderson of New Mexico; two grandchildren and spouses from Maryland, Robert and Christy Sommerville and Antoinette Sommerville and Anthony Wood; three stepgrandchildren and spouses, Dr. Greg Anderson of Ohio, Sandra and Mark Winter of South Dakota and Janie and Jeff Coston of Arizona. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Bethany, Adrianna, Isabella and Connor.

Friends will be received at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday where a funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 9. Interment will be in Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery.

Vonda R. Moore

Vonda R. Moore, 66, a former resident of Parsons, and a resident of Rockville, Md., departed this life Monday evening, May 4, 2009, in Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

She was born Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1942, at Parsons, a daughter of the late Howard E. Moore and Eva E. Crosten Moore.

She had never married.

Surviving are three brothers, Donald K. Moore and wife, Annabel, Howard Dale Moore and wife, Linda, and Ronald A. Moore and wife, Naomi, all of Parsons; two sisters, Vera Hilliard and husband, Millard, of O'Fallon, Mo., and Barbara G. McDonald and husband, Jack, of Holly Meadows; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Frank W. Moore and Ralph L. Moore.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1960. She was employed as a legal secretary for various law firms in Washington, D.C. She was a contributing member of the Humane Society. She loved to read and was an avid sports fan, especially fond of baseball and football.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Eli Hostetler will officiate and interment will follow in the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons.

Alice J. McCray

Alice Jean Cutlip McCray, 53, of Dunmore, died Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Dunmore.

Alice was a caregiver and was a member of Dunmore United Methodist Church.

She was born Aug. 29, 1955, at Painsville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Shirley Luther and Betty Jean Meeks Cutlip.

She is survived by her husband, James Harold "Ike" McCray; one daughter, Phyllis Jean McCray of Dunmore; two sons, Jamie Lee McCray and David Gray McCray of Dunmore; one sister, Mary Jane Brown of Belington; one brother, Jerry Wayne Cutlip of Stony Bottom; and one grandchild.

Arrangements are being handled by VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton where he family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 10, at the funeral home with David Rittenhouse officiating.

Joseph Prendergast

Joseph Allen Prendergast, 33, a resident of Mill Creek, departed this life Monday morning, May 4, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1975, at Waynesburg, Pa., a son of Lonnie Prendergast and Shelda Butcher Vandevender.

He was never married.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lori Beth Prendergast of Parsons, two brothers, Dennis Butcher of Parsons and Foster Vandevender of Beverly, two sisters, Karla Louk of Winchester, Va., and Ashley Taylor of Mill Creek, six nieces, Erin, Ariel, Misty, Shelby, Brooke and Courtney; and four nephews, Roy, Joshua, Cody, and Gary Jr.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Olen Vandevender.

Joseph was a graduate of Tucker County High School with the class of 1995 and had not worked due to disability. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and riding four wheelers and dirt bikes.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Bill Hopkins will officiate and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.

Omri Nathan Ogden, 25, of Route 1, French Creek, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009. in Scranton, Pa.

He was born June 28, 1983, at Buckhannon, a son of Michael S. Ogden of French Creek and Sandra Faye Cooper Riffle of Hodgesville.

He is survived by his wife, Bethanne Hullinger Ogden of Ohio; one son, William Nathan Ogden; and two daughters, Lillian Faith and Lindsey Grace Ogden, all of Ohio. Also surviving are one sister, Abigail Jeffries and husband, David, of French Creek; one half brother, Anthony Riffle of Hodgesville; paternal grandparents, James "Red" and Ruby Ogden of French Creek; one niece, Ryleigh Jeffries; and one nephew, Jeremiah Jeffries both of French Creek; two aunts, Phyllis Lewis of Texas, and Kathryn Collins of Webster County; and one uncle, Okey Cooper and wife, Sherry, of Virginia. He is also survived by his companion, Michelle McIe of French Creek.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Dana and Hilma Faye Cooper.

Omri was a 2001 graduate of Buckhannon Upshur High School and was employed by S.W. Jack Drilling Co.
