Blaine Weese

Mr. Blaine "Monk" Weese, 83, a resident of Elkins, passed away Friday morning, April 10, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department.

He was born July 3, 1925, at Elkins, a son of the late Blaine and Myrtle Effie Kyle Weese.

On Feb. 25, 1961, at Oakland, Md., he was married to Nora E. Morrison Weese, who preceded him in death Aug. 9, 2006.

He is survived by one sister, Betty "Pickle" Smith of Elkins; a special friend, Dot Welch; and several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers, James Weese and Ralph "Bill" Weese; one half brother, Glen Kyle; and two sisters, Christine "Teenie" Cropp and Mary V. Valentine.

Mr. Weese attended the schools of Randolph County and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy.

He was retired from the West Virginia Division of Highways and was a member of the Randolph County Senior Center, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Charles Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in American Legion's Little Arlington Cemetery where presentation of the American flag will be made at the graveside by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion.

Charlotte A. Reed

Charlotte Ann Coulthard Reed, 72, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at her home.

Mrs. Reed was born Aug. 29, 1936, at English, a daughter of the late Alvie T. and Ann Baisden Coulthard.

She graduated from Concord College with a bachelor's degree in English and taught English at Bartley Junior High School in Bartley. After earning a master's degree in English from West Virginia University, she taught at Bethany College and then at WVU.

On Sept. 2, 1961, she married Dr. Joseph B. Reed from Burlington. Her career includes work in public, university and medical libraries. Moving to Buckhannon in 1966, Mrs. Reed raised three children, was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and worked as office manager and "trouble shooter" for her husband's medical practice. She gave the gifts of patience, wisdom, creativity and a calm sense of humor and will be dearly missed and remembered by all.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Karen Elaine Reed Hallowell and husband, Thomas Bowers, of Lebanon, Pa., and Betsy Gail Reed Noullet and husband, John Patrick, of Mt. Gretna, Pa.; one son, Jonathan Ben Reed and wife, Michelle Londel DeLaGarza, of Frisco, Texas; one grandson, Caleb Joseph Reed; one step-gandson, Clint Jordan DeLaGarza of Flower Mound, Texas; one brother, James Alvie Coulthard of Chatam Hill, Va.; one uncle, Robert Coulthard of Sugar Grove, Va.; and one aunt, June Overbay of Chilhowie, Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Brenda June Hardy.

Memorial services are planned for Saturday, June 13, at the First Presbyterian Church in Buckhannon and Sunday, June 14, at Goodman Chapel, Chatam Hill, Va.

Kelly R. Nestor

Kelly Ray Nestor, 37, a resident of Clover Run, Tucker County, departed this life late Thursday evening, April 9, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. Death was the result of injuries sustained in a construction accident.

Michael R. Trusler

Michael Rodger "Mikie" Trusler Jr., 17, of Gaines, died Friday, April 10, 2009, near Adrian as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born May 31, 1991, at Buckhannon, a son of Michael Rodger and Mary Perrine Trusler of Rock Cave.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, William Lee Trusler; one sister, Missy Trusler, both of Rock Cave; maternal grandmother, Erma Perrine of Rock Cave; paternal grandparents, Lewis and June Cooper of Buckhannon; cousin, Donald Perrine of Hinkleville; several aunts, uncles and other cousins; several loving friends and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Rodger Clinton Trusler; maternal grandfather, Luther Perrine; and paternal grandfather, Rodger Trusler.

Michael was a student at Buckhannon-Upshur High School and an avid coon hunter.

Friends will be received 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Canaan Church with the Rev. Jimmy Russell officiating. Burial will follow in the Canaan Church Cemetery.

 Ruth E. Horn

Ruth Eileen Horn, 88, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, April 11, 2009, at her home under the care of St. Joseph's Hospice.

She was born Feb. 27, 1921, at Middletown, Ohio, a daughter of the late Samuel Thomas and Effie Current Ballard.

On Jan. 24, 1941, she married Robert Million Horn, who preceded her in death in June of 1985.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Twine; one brother, Thomas Ballard; and one sister, Grace House.

She is survived by three sons, Robert Million Horn Jr. and wife, Cherry, of Kentucky; Algin Horn of Eaton, Ohio, and Bradley Wayne Horn and wife, Joy, of Tennessee; five daughters, Cyntha Jane Snyder of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carol Ann Duffield and husband, Douglas, of Buckhannon, Grace Roberta Johnson of Buckhannon, Cathy Adams of Franklin, Ohio, and Ruth Randel of Middletown, Ohio; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several extended family, loving caregivers, Angie Zirkle and Tammy Ryan; and a special thank you to Dr. Ali Khan and St. Joseph's Hospice.

Mrs. Horn was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of God in Eaton, Ohio, where she was very active.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Shirley M. Corley

Shirley May Corley, 80, a resident of Union community, Philippi, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2009, in Broaddus Hospital.

She was born May 9, 1928, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Ivan and Gladys (Pitman) Daugherty.

She was united in marriage May 21, 1946, to her husband of 62 years, Milton "Bud" Corley, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Kathern and husband, Dan Sterchak, of Minden, Nev., Patricia and husband, Ken Shafer, of Cortland, Ohio, Helma Ward of Las Vegas, Nev., and Marcia and husband, Ted Armstrong, of Leavittsburg, Ohio; and nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren

Mrs. Corley was preceded in death by one brother, Maynard Daugherty; and one son-in-law, Mark Ward.

Mrs. Corley moved to the Warren, Ohio, area in 1951, where she raised her family and worked at Packard Electric for 15 years and was a member of Bazetta Christian Church. Afterward, moving home to West Virginia in 1976, she was a member of Union Church of Christ, the Sew and Sews quilting group and the Union Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed quilting, gardening, traveling and spending time with her husband, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Corley's request for cremation will be honored. There will be no visitation or services.

Vonda E. Simons

Vonda Ethel Simons, 95, of Buckhannon, died Friday, April 10, 2009, in St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon.

She was born Jan. 8, 1914, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late James A. and Allie Cutright Simons.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Simons; and three sisters, Viola Conner, Viona Haller and Virginia Gregory.

She is survived by two brothers, Lester Simons of Horse Shoe, N.C., and James Simons of Buckhannon; three nieces, Joan H. Cramer of Silver Spring, Md., Thelma Summerfield of Elkins and Marjorie Johnson of Martinsburg; and two nephews, Carl Haller of Elkins and James Gregory of Buckhannon.

Ms. Simons was a seamstress for Reidboard Brothers and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Heavner Cemetery with Pastor Rick Cutright officiating.

Arthur W. Barkley

Arthur W. Barkley of Harpers Ferry, passed away April 11, 2009.

He was the beloved husband of the late Effie M. (Petrice) Barkley; devoted father of Charles E. Edmond of Baltimore, Md., Joseph E. Edmond of Essex, Md., JoAnn Sain of Pasadena, Md., Robert a McKnight of Mercer, Pa., and Barbara Booher of Virginia Beach, Va. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He also was the loving companion of Ethel Frye.

Mr. Barkley was a resident of Harpers Ferry since 1963. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He worked at Glen L. Martin for 20 years and at Westinghouse for 15 years until his retirement in 1964. He enjoyed find-a-word puzzles and gardening.

Relative and friends are invited to call at the family owned and operated McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home P.A., 3204 Mountain Road in Pasadena, Md., today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Kelly R. Nestor

Kelly Ray Nestor, 37, a resident of Clover Run, Tucker County, departed this life Thursday evening April 9, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. Death was the result of injuries sustained in a construction accident.

He was born Sunday, Feb. 20, 1972, at Elkins, a son of Donald Ray Nestor and Catherine Keister Nestor.

On Aug. 21, 1994, he was married to the former Teresa Lou Cooper, who survives.

Surviving are three daughters, Gracie Jo, Erin Paige and Kylie Dawn Nestor, all at home; four sisters, Pam Waugh and husband, Jimmy, of St. George, Mary Knotts and husband, Craig, of Martinsburg, Teresa Surock and husband, Eric, of Mt. Clare and Nancy Simpson and husband, Tommy, of St. George; two brothers, Jeff Nestor and wife, Wendy, of Newburg, Md., and Donald Nestor and wife, Patsy, of Elkins; one brother-in-law, Andy Cooper and wife, Monica; in-laws, James Thomas and Donna Rohrbaugh Cooper; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Tucker County High School with the class of 1990. He was employed with Local 568 Ironworkers of Cumberland, Md. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to bow hunt, a devoted husband, father, brother and son. He will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of God in Parsons. Final rites will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at the church. The Rev. Eli Hostetler will officiate and interment will follow in the Nestor Family Cemetery at Clover Run.

Loretta O. Smith

Loretta Omagene (Queen) Smith, 74, of Akron, Ohio, went home to her Lord on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009.

She was born in Buckhannon and moved to Akron in 1955.

Omagene had worked for South Akron Awning, Prinz Interiors and the Akron Masonic Temple and was an active PTA member during her children's school years. Omagene was a faithful member of Celebration Church, formerly Evangel Temple, for more than 50 years. From the mid 1960s to 1970s, she was part of the Evangel Builders, a group of ladies who raised money for special church projects. For more than 11 years, Omagene arrived early to prepare coffee and baskets of doughnut holes for Sunday school. She participated in the Pioneers of Faith seniors group and enjoyed luncheons and short trips with her friends.

Omagene belonged to the Akron Metro Parks Hiking Club for 36 years, hiking more than 5,000 miles. She was the club president for two years and also hiked with Portage Trail Walkers and Canton Hilltop Hikers.

In addition to being a loving and dedicated wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Omagene was a gracious and compassionate person who found great joy in people. For anyone in need, she was always there to love, help and encourage.

Preceded in death by her parents, Ovid and Ocie Queen, and sister, Angeline Marple, she is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Ralph Junior Smith; her devoted children, Ronald (Donna-Marie), Robin (Bruce Smyth), Lonnie (Nancy), Letitia (Gale Wells), Thomas (Teresa) and David (Rae-Jean); sisters, Geraldine Stump and Ernestine Stone; seven grandchildren and three great-granddaughters; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and faithful friends.

Calling hours are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Road in Akron and Wednesday at Celebration Church, 688 Dan St. in Akron from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour with Pastor Jeff Wade and Pastor John Beers officiating. Graveside services and interment will be Friday, April 17, at 11 a.m. in the Reger Chapel Church Cemetery at Buckhannon.

Margaret Daugherty

Margaret Ruth Daugherty, 95, of Lodi, Ohio, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009, in Meadowview Care Center in Seville where she had resided the past 15 years.

She was born May 19, 1913, at Philippi, to William H. and Daisy Dean Parker Burner.

She married John A. Daugherty on Oct. 19, 1936, and was a longtime resident of Juanita before moving to Ohio in 1962.

She was a member of the Point Mountain Church in Webster County and Mary's Chapel in Barbour County. Mrs. Daugherty was a homemaker and also a 4-H leader.

Surviving are daughters, Sandra K. (Ron) Jones of Elkins and Nina L. (Richard) Olexa of Mentor, Ohio; son, John A. "Sonny" (Joyce) Daugherty of Lodi, Ohio; and 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1986; daughters Shirley M. Dimauro and Mary R. Carpenter; sisters, Virginia Shaw and Mary Mitchell; and brothers William "Bud" and Charles Burner.

A private interment will be in Point Mountain Cemetery in Webster County. There will be no public visitation.

Mary V. Gear

Mary Virginia Gear, 87, a recent resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in failing health for the past several years.

Born April 10, 1922, at Elkins, she was a daughter of the late Wade and Rosie Alkire Gear.

She had never married.

Mary was a homemaker and performed the duties of housekeeper and caretaker for several families in the Randolph County area.

She and her family moved into one of the first Homestead houses in Dailey on April 13, 1925. She was 13 years old at the time. Her family was among the first who organized and started the Dailey United Methodist Church in approximately 1935. The church is now closed. Mary also was the primary caretaker for her parents in their later years.

Mary is survived by five brothers, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many, many friends.

A very special person, Mary will be sadly missed and will remain in the hearts of those who loved her.

At Mary's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service at the funeral home. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, in the Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville. Interment will follow immediately after the graveside service.

Craig Luzier

Craig Luzier, 58, of Davis, passed away Monday, April 13, 2009, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Craig was born June 18, 1950, at Parsons, a son of Ella Jean Luzier of Davis and the late David Luzier.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, the former Betty Bonnett; two sons, Travis (Heather) of Bruceton Mills and Jared (Beth) of Martinsburg; one daughter, Alicia Lambert (Dave) of Parsons; three grandchildren, Tucker and Taylor Luzier and Xander Lambert.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rhett and Eric Luzier.

He was a 1969 graduate of Mountaineer High School and a 1970 graduate of Wheeling Barber College. He retired from Consolidated Coal with 30 years of service. Craig was a man who loved spending time with his family.

Until his illness, he loved coaching baseball and basketball for Tucker County youth. He was a member of Davis United Methodist Church

Latrelle M. Gower

Latrelle Marie (Lawrence) Gower, 54, of Romney, formerly of Davis, went to be with her Lord April 3, 2009, in Romney.

She was born Aug. 3, 1954, at Washington, D.C., a daughter of Edward Dennis Lawrence and the late Beulah Mae Rohrbaugh Lawrence.

Surviving are one daughter, Christina (William) Huffman; one son, Craig Robert Thompson; husband, Larry Gower, all of Romney; two stepdaughters; one brother, Steve Lawrence of Mt. Morris, Pa.; one sister, Deborah Smith of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews. She has one very special grandson, Eli Anthony Lawrence, who she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her mother and sister, Barb Strawser.

She enjoyed doing crafts and spending time with family and friends. She loved to joke and have a good time. She was employed by the Hampshire County School system.

Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home Friday, April 17, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. James Strahin will officiate.

Michael Spotloe

Michael Spotloe Jr., 91, a resident of Philippi, passed away peacefully at his residence Monday, April 13, 2009.

He was born on Dec. 17, 1917, at Century, a son of the late Michael Sr. and Jane (Dobson) Spotloe.

He was united in marriage in 1979 to Barbara (Ward) Spotloe, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Cathie Rivlin and Carolyn and husband, Paul Wilson, both of South Carolina, and Sharon Snider of Charleston; two sons, Tony and wife, Jan Spotloe, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Kevin Spotloe of Philippi; one stepson, John Ward of Philippi; one brother, Dave Spotloe of Webster; two sisters, Cathryn Maxson of Century and Pauline Purtsok of Summersville; 13 grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren

Also surviving is the mother of his children, Agnes Payne Spotloe.

Mike was preceded in death by one son, Philip Spotloe; one granddaughter, Stacey Ritchie; one stepdaughter, Vicki Ward; and nine brothers and sisters.

Mike was a member of the Philippi United Methodist Church.

Mike, known to the music world as JR, certainly was an inspiration to many, many people, especially the group called "The Good Ole Boys" who loved him dearly. His compassion for music and his talent were unbelievable. He definitely was the "Good Ole Boys" hero. When they appeared in various counties, the first question asked was, where's JR?

He will be sadly missed and with a high profile of admiration, we were blessed with the quality time spent with JR. May the good Lord bless and keep you until we meet again.- The Good Ole Boys.

Oscar L. Sherman

Oscar Lesley "Scrub" Sherman, 90, a resident of the Moore Community, Montrose, departed this life Monday evening, April 13, 2009, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas.

He was born Monday, Aug. 26, 1918, at Moore, a son of the late Grover A. Sherman Sr. and Lilly Rosier Sherman.

In October of 1939, he was married to the former Lavelle Virginia Phillips, who preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 2008. They had celebrated 68 years of marriage.

Surviving are two sons, Philip Sherman Sr. and wife, Carolyn, of Horseshoe Run and David Sherman and wife, Lorraine, of Ohio; one daughter, Rebecca Sherman Bozic and husband, Dennis, of Virginia; six grandchildren, Mark, Stephen Jr., John and Scott Sherman, Dylan Bozic and Brian Pabeko and wife, Kelly; and one great-grandson, Nick Sherman. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by one son, Stephen Sherman Sr.; one grandson, Philip Sherman Jr.; and seven brothers, Ward, Leonard, Ray, Paul, Racie, Grover and Clyde Sherman.

He attended the school at Moore. He worked in the shipyards at Baltimore, Md., during World War II. He worked for the former Lambert Chevrolet Co. at Parsons and for many years was the owner and operator of Sherman's Auto Repair at Moore. Yoshie N. Shinaberry, 76, of Durbin, passed away Monday, April 13, 2009, in Durbin.

Born Sept. 28, 1932, at Fukuoka, Japan, she was a daughter of the late Yoshio and Kimiko Takeshita Nakano.

Yoshie was a cook at the Hermitage Restaurant for more than 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Shinaberry.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Mallow and husband, David, of Franklin; two sons, Henry Shinaberry and wife, Wilma, of Arbovale and Jerry Shinaberry and wife, Vicki, of Durbin; grandchildren, Amanda Seldomridge, Sara Shinaberry, Jason Shinaberry and Jared Mallow; great-grandchildren, Makayla, Sierra and Joshua Mallow and Matthew and Nathaniel Shinaberry; two sisters, Taeko Fujita and Chizuko Yano of Japan; two brothers, Noboru Nakano and Youichi Nakano of Japan; one sister-in-law, Lucille Robinson and husband, Ralph; one brother-in-law, Eddie Meeks; and several nieces and nephews.

Wylorae K. Booth, 91, of Route 2, Belington, died Tuesday evening, April 14, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins, following a brief illness.

She was born May 29, 1917, at Meadowville, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Emory Loman and Lena Gladys (Stalnaker) Poling.

Survivors include her husband, A. Houston Booth of Route 2, Belington; a daughter, Patricia Paolini and husband, Julius, of Stow, Ohio; three stepchildren, Patricia Boyles and husband, William, of Belington, Lora Caputo of Winston Salem, N.C., and Fred Booth and wife, Peggy, of Bel Air, Md.; one grandson, Joseph Paolini and fiancee, Hope Tybuck, of Canton, Ohio; six stepgrandchildren, Mark Boyles and wife, Lawayne, of Bison, Wyo., Marsha Ford and husband, Mell, of Germantown, Md., Drew Booth and Sarah Booth, both of Baltimore, Md., Kristin Caputo of Charlotte, N.C., Jason Caputo and wife, Shandra, of New Bern, N.C.; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and a special friend, Doris Lutz.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Loman Poling.

Mrs. Booth was a graduate of Philippi High School and attended Broaddus College and Davis & Elkins College. She was a former Barbour County public school teacher. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Laurel Mountain Post 410 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Home in Eaton Rapids, Mich. She was Methodist by faith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave. in Belington. The Rev. Arden Beck, Pastor Herbert Bledsoe and Dr. Carl Gittings will officiate and interment will follow in Central Chapel Cemetery. Andrew H. Kelker

Andrew Harold "Andy" Kelker, 45, a resident of Whitmer, passed away April 7, 2009 at his residence.

He was born Jan. 12, 1964, at Huntington, Ind., a son of Michael and Shela Kelker, who survive.

Also surviving are three brothers, Daniel Kelker of Lauderhill, Fla., Scott Kelker and wife, Katrina, and Jeremy Kelker, all of Huntington, Ind.

Andy was a 1982 graduate of Huntington North High School. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was an avid outdoorsman.

A graveside service will be conducted in Laurel Hill Cemetery near Whitmer at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18. Pastor Steve Bailey will officiate and interment will follow.

Calvin Coolidge Bright, 77, a resident of Hendricks, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, April 15, 2009, in the Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins.

He was born Saturday, Feb. 27, 1932, at Dry Fork, Elk, a son of the late Martin Vanburen Bonner and Rosa Bell Bright.

Surviving are three sons, Clifton Riley Summerfield and wife, Rebecca, of Michigan, Charles Lough and wife, Cathy, of Baltimore, Md., and Patrick Leslie Bright and wife, Joni, of Virginia; one daughter, Rose Marie Haga of Baltimore, Md; one brother, Van Davis and wife, Phyllis, of Elk, Dry Fork; four sisters, Halena Deitz of Meadow Bridge, Londa Bowman of Cresaptown, Md., Eva Moore of Cumberland, Md., and Ellen Zukas and husband, Bob, of Baltimore, Md.; companion and caregiver, Teresa Mallow; 10 grandchildren and five-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were four brothers, Howard Davis, Herbert Davis, Nathan Bright and Ben Bright; two sisters, Virginia "Betty" Shipp and Genevieve Pencoski; and several half brothers and half sisters.

He attended the schools of Tucker County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a former employee of Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point, Md. He loved the outdoors, doing his yard work and visiting with his many friends at the restaurant.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Sunday, April 19, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Matthew Bright will officiate and interment will follow in the High Ridge Cemetery at Elk, Dry Fork, where the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign War will conduct full military rites.

Delma Miller

Delma Miller, 84, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at her home under the care of St. Joseph's Hospice.

She was born March 2, 1925, at Birch River, a daughter of the late Dow and Viola Collins George.

On May 4, 1951, she married Virgil Anderson Miller, who preceded her in death Nov. 12, 1994.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Kermit Ray Miller; one daughter, Brenda Kay Baughman; eight brothers and sisters; and two daughters-in-law, Anna Loraine Miller and Sherri Miller.

She is survived by two sons, Don Miller of Buckhannon and Stephen Allen Miller and wife, Elaine, of Aurora; three daughters, Mary Ellen Wagoner and husband, Randy, of Buckhannon, Beverly Anne Huffman and husband, Homer Huffman Jr., of Aurora and Irene Marie Robinson and husband, Mitchell, of Virginia; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Earl Eugene George of Pennsylvania; and one sister, Wilma Jenkins of Aurora.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker.

Doris I. Arnold

Doris Irene Arnold, 93, also affectionately known as "Muddy," of Davis, passed away April 16, 2009, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home.

She was born Aug. 13, 1915, at Dobbin, a daughter of the late Leon M. Ruckel and Amanda B. Kline Ruckle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude "George" W. Arnold, in 1999.

Also preceding her in death were one son, Donn Arnold; two brothers, James Ruckel and Leon "Punk" Ruckle; and two sisters, Dana Donica and Neti Ruckel. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include one son, George (Linda) Arnold of Central Point, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

Doris was employed as a sales clerk at Blackwater Falls State Park for several years. She enjoyed being around people and was an avid fan of anti-litter campaigns. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Davis. In lieu of flowers, pick up some litter.

Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home Saturday, April 18, from noon until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Allen Schwarz will officiate. Interment will follow in the Davis Cemetery.

Harrison Elza Sr.

Harrison N. "Buddy" Elza Sr., 82, a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center and a former resident of Whitmer, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 23, 1926, at Whitmer, a son of the late Nicholas Patton and Sarah Ann Adams Elza.

On Nov. 2, 1946, at Oakland, Md., he was married to Kathleen Stella Nelson Elza, who preceded him in death June 18, 1998.

He is survived by two sons, Harrison "Bud" Elza of Cleveland, Ohio, and Nelson "Skip" Elza of Avon, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were one son, Bradford Elza; one daughter, Sheila Elza; and several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Elza attended the schools of Randolph County and was employed by Baker Material Handling in Ohio as a welding inspector prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Whitmer United Methodist Church.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at the Whitmer United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be conducted at noon Saturday, April 18, from the church with the Rev. Earl Bible officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery near Whitmer.

James D. Barker

James Darrell Barker, 63,, a resident of South Henry Avenue, Elkins, passed away Wednesday morning, April 15, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 2, 1945. at Costa, a son of the late Patrick Huey Barker and Sylvia Macil Walker Barker.

He is survived by his wife, Nayoka Guthrie-Barker; one son, Jay H. Guthrie of Elkins; and two daughters, Leaha Barker and Carrie Slack and husband; Bobby, all of Chesapeake. Also surviving are one brother, Joe Barker and wife, Jean, of Kansas; one brother-in-law, Rocky L. Beale of Valley Head; one sister-in-law, Nadine Barker of Cleveland, Ohio; three grandchildren, Ethan Tincher, Sam and Abby Slack; special friends, Basil Price and Kenneth "Tank" McClure; and his cat, CeCe who he dearly loved.

Also preceding him in death was one brother, Jerry Keith Barker.

Mr. Barker was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion, a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason and Past Master of the Blue Lodge of Chesapeake. He was a pipefitter and welder for 41 years with Charleston Union Local 625. He loved fishing with the guys of the Cheat Mountain Surf Fishing Association. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, most of whom were like family.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Saturday, April 18, he will be moved to The Lighthouse Chapel on Bell Crouch Road located six miles south of Huttonsville intersection where the funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Pastor Bryan Headley will officiate and interment will follow in the Mingo Cemetery where presentation of the American flag will be made by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion.

Julian M. Hamed

Julian M. "Tony" Hamed, 90, of Green Bank, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 15, 1918, at Arbovale, he was a son of the late Faris and Mattie Trainer Hamed.

Tony was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was a lifelong farmer and retired from the engineering department at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Steve Hamed; a sister, Blanche Hamed Sheets; and two brothers, Kenneth and Rockford Hamed.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Jane Sheets Hamed; two sons, David Hamed of Dearborn, Mich., and Joe Hamed and wife, Karen, of Christiansburg, Va.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Taylor of Arbovale; and one brother-in-law, Gilbert Sheets of Kernersville, N.C.

Mary Sue Ward Behrens, 70, of Green Bank, passed away Monday, April 13, 2009, while on a cruise in the Panama Canal with her husband.

Born Sept. 7, 1938, at Hughes, N.C., she was a daughter of the late William Jacob and Maggie Jaynes Ward.

She was a Christian, wife, mother and teacher. She attended Pine Grove Chapel, was a member of the Senior Center of Green Bank and was a graduate of Kings College in Bristol, Tenn.

Survivors include her husband, George H. Behrens Sr.; three sons, Hank Behrens and wife, Susan, of Russell, Ky., Karl Behrens of Newport News, Va., and Kurt Behrens and wife, Kimberly, of Thaxton, Va.; four grandchildren, Austin Behrens, Heath Behrens, Victoria Behrens and T.J. Seco; and one niece, Gaeta Stratton of Sonoma, Calif.

Pearle Spencer Hevener Ashworth, beloved mother, grandmother and faithful servant of the Lord, 91, of Durbin, died peacefully Thursday, April 16, 2009, in Crestview Rehabilitation Center in Lancaster, Ohio.

A homemaker whose meals and homemade bread were a treat to many, she was a lifelong resident of Durbin, a member of the Church of the Brethren and attended Bethel Methodist.

Born May 12, 197, Pearle was the youngest child of the late Charles and Mary Rader Spencer.

Survivors include two sons, Tim Hevener and wife, Jean, of Durbin and Randy Hevener and wife, Karen, of Canal Winchester, Ohio; one sister Blye Taylor of Meadville, Pa.; five grandchildren, Robin Dean and husband, Brian, Amber Herrod and husband, Chad, Adam Heavener, Bethany Bateman and husband, Jason, and Kristy Repack and husband, Matt; and great-grandchildren, Aaron, Austin and Evan Dean and Porter Herrod.

Steven Daughterty

Steven Frederick Daugherty, 26, a resident of Wabash Avenue, Philippi, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in Broaddus Hospital.

He was born Dec. 2, 1982, at Elkins, a son of Frederick Steven and Veda B. (Boylen) Daugherty and stepmother, Carmen Daugherty, who survives.

Also surviving are two sisters, Dr. Stacey Marie Woods of Fairmont and LaDonna R. and husband, Adam A. Dutton, of Winchester, Va.; two stepbrothers; Kenny L. and Kevin L. Carder of Philippi; grandmother, Aretta Tucker of Grafton; two nephews, Tyler Alan Woods of Fairmont and Jackson David Dutton of Winchester, Va.

Steven was preceded in death by his grandparents, Boyce and Phyllis Daugherty of Philippi and Frank Boylen of Charleston.

Steven loved bowling, fishing, playing pool, listening to Bob Dylan and watching his favorite team, the Red Sox, play. He attended Faith Way Baptist Church and was on the dean's list while attending Fairmont State College.

Dorothy Hamrick

Dorothy Virginia Ware Hamrick, 97, a resident of Valley Head, departed this life Friday morning, April 17, 2009, at Nella's Inc. in Crystal Springs.

She was born Friday, Nov. 10, 1911, at Valley Head, a daughter of the late Arthur E. Ware and Mary E. Leary Ware.

On May 6, 1937, she was married to Arlie Hamrick, who preceded her in death during 2004.

She is survived by one sister, Virginia M. Corley and husband, Donald, of Akron, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and Carl Ware; and one sister, Elva Snyder.

Dorothy attended the schools at Valley Head and had worked at the Hilborn Store at Valley Head for more than 20 years. She was a devoted member and worker in the Valley Head United Methodist Church since 1926, and had played the organ and piano there for 67 years. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, April 20, Dorothy will be moved to the Valley Head United Methodist Church where friends may call from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., the funeral hour. Edgar I. Bennett

Edgar Irvin Bennett, 91, of Front Street, Belington, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at his home. He had been in his usual health and his death was unexpected.

He was born Oct. 24, 1917, at Belington, a son of the late Eugene B. and Olga (Barnett) Bennett.

He had been the longtime companion of the late Ruth Shahan and his survivors include five sisters, Lura Spotloe of Philippi, Loraine Rands of Belington, Catherine Perry of Ashtabula, Ohio, Eloise Ison of Fairmont and Betty Glendenning of Newton Falls, Ohio; and Mrs. Shahan's children, Lucille Johnson, Dorothy Tincher, Patty Canfield and husband, Elwood, all of Belington, Donna Taylor and husband, Jearl, of Norton, Waldo Shahan and wife, Hazel, Gene Shahan and wife, Geraldine, Ronnie Shahan and wife, Linda, and Larry Shahan and wife, Connie, all of Belington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Myrtle DeBellis, Edith Pauline Bennett and Beatrice Edwards; brothers, Leonard Bennett and Ernest Ray Bennett; by Troy Shahan, with whom he had shared his home for several years; and Wanda Shahan Compton.

Mr. Bennett was a retired coal miner and was a Southern Baptist.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. The Rev. David Mellquist will officiate and interment will follow in the Belington Fraternal Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, on Monday.

Harrison N. "Buddy" Elza Sr., 82, a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center and a former resident of Whitmer, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

A funeral service will be conducted at noon today from the Whitmer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Earl Bible officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery near Whitmer.

James Darrell Barker, 63, a resident of South Henry Avenue, Elkins, passed away Wednesday morning, April 15, 2009, at his residence.

Oscar Lesley "Scrub" Sherman, 90, a resident of the Moore community, Montrose, departed this life Monday evening, April 13, 2009, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas.

Paul L. Roy

Paul Lewis "Essie" Roy, 80, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Thursday afternoon, April 16, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown following a short illness. He had been in declining health.

He was born Monday, June 25, 1928, at home on Tannery Row at Parsons, a son of the late Denver Lee Roy and Viola Pearl Bodkin.

He was united in marriage March 28, 1952, to the former Velma Virginia Shahan at Red House, Md., with the Rev. Donald Gallion officiating. They had celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one son, Gregory Paul Roy of Parsons; two daughters, Risha Roy McGill and husband, Randy, of Point Pleasant and Michelle Roy Phillips and husband, Allan, of Ranson; one brother, Junior Denver Roy and wife, Patricia, of Morgantown; one sister, Joan Roy Liller of Camas, Wash.; one half brother, Stelman Roy; three grandchildren, Reanna and Jon Phillips of Ranson and Arysta McGill Brick and husband, Jason, of Mount Airy, N.C.; one stepgrandson, Jeremy McGill and wife, Elaine, of Sissonville; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Kyia, Emma and Eric McGill of Sissonville.

Preceding him in death were five brothers, Howard "Hank," Eddie, Wallace, Raymond and Donald Clare Roy; two half brothers, Charles and Winfred Roy; and two sisters, Gladys Roy Kisner and Patty Roy Smith.

He attended Parsons High School and received his GED in 1953. He was known for his exceptional athletic abilities and had a special love of the game of basketball and horseshoes. In 1947, he enlisted in the newly formed U.S. Air Force. He actively served during the Korean Conflict and received an honorable discharge in 1953. He re-enlisted in the Air Force in 1956 and wore the uniform with pride as a staff sergeant, honorably discharged and retired in April of 1971. He did tours of duty during the Vietnam Conflict as well as other fields, foreign and domestic, receiving numerous medals, badges and citations. Immediately prior to his retirement, he had the privilege of participating in the work of the Apollo 14 space mission. Even with all the variety, challenges and excitement of his earlier years, he couldn't wait to return to Tucker County. He called it "God's Country," and he and his wife, Velma, returned to the Parsons area after retirement. He worked at the Parsons Tannery Co. until its closing. He also worked at the power plant at Mount Storm and did work for the West Virginia Soil Conservation Department. He was a Protestant by faith and at one time served as Sunday school superintendent at the Parsons First Church of the Nazarene. "Essie" loved to sing, was helpful, neighborly and known for his quick wit. He was a most devoted fan of the West Virginia University Mountaineers.

William Johnson Sr.

William C. "Butch" Johnson Sr., 70, a resident of the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility, Clarksburg, since its opening in September, entered into eternal rest at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center at Clarksburg.

He was born Saturday, Nov. 19, 1938, on the Haddix Road in Elkins, a son of the late Lloyd George and Pearl Y. Dawson Johnson.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, 1955, he entered the U.S. Army for basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C. In 1956, he was assigned to duty in the state of Washington. In July 1956, he was transferred to Alaska. On Friday, Nov. 15, 1958, he was honorably discharged at St. Louis, Mo. Butch was very proud to be a Korean War veteran.

After leaving the military, Butch resided in Elkins for many years. He had worked as a coal miner at the Badger 15 Mine in Philippi for 13 years. After working in the mines, he became a certified glass blower. Later, he was a certified plumber until his retirement.

He was an avid fisherman. Butch enjoyed all sports, but he loved baseball games. Butch was a resident of Mansfield Place in Philippi before moving to the new West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility in Clarksburg. He was the eighth resident in the new facility.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Johnson Neale; one infant brother and one infant sister.

Butch's survivors include his three sons and their wives, William C. "Billy" Johnson Jr. and Barbara of Culpepper, Va., John "Joe" Johnson and Amy of Kissimmee, Fla., and Kevin Johnson and Elizabeth of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; one grandson, Joseph Lee Johnson, and one granddaughter, Savannah Joy Johnson, both of Kissimmee, Fla.; two sisters, Geraldine "Gerry" Barkley and Irene Mosser, both of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.

At Butch's request, he will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered in the mountains of West Virginia.

Wylorae K. Booth

Wylorae K. Booth, 91, of Route 2, Belington, died Tuesday evening, April 14, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins following a brief illness.

She was born May 29, 1917, at Meadowville, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Emory Loman and Lena Gladys (Stalnaker) Poling.

Survivors include her husband, A. Houston Booth of Route 2, Belington; a daughter, Patricia Paolini and husband, Julius, of Stow, Ohio; three stepchildren, Patricia Boyles and husband, William, of Belington, Lora Caputo of Winston Salem, N.C., Fred Booth and wife, Peggy, of Bel Air, Md.; one grandson, Joseph Paolini and fiancee, Hope Tybuck, of Canton, Ohio; one great-grandson, Jordan Julius Paolini of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; six stepgrandchildren, Mark Boyles and wife, Lawayne, of Bison, Wy., Marsha Ford and husband, Mel, of Germantown, Md., Drew Booth and Sarah Booth, both of Baltimore, Md., Kristin Caputo of Charlotte, N.C., Jason Caputo and wife, Shandra, of New Bern, N.C.; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and a special friend, Doris Lutz.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Loman Poling.

Mrs. Booth was a graduate of Philippi High School and attended Alderson-Broaddus College and Davis & Elkins College. She was a former Barbour County public school teacher. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Laurel Mountain Post 410 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Home in Eaton Rapids, Mich. She was Methodist by faith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. The Rev. Arden Beck, Pastor Herbert Bledsoe and Dr. Carl Gittings will officiate and interment will follow in the Central Chapel Cemetery. Friends called at the funeral home Friday and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., the funeral hour, today.
