Margaret E. Siler

Margaret Ellen Siler, 73, a resident of Poplar Street, Elkins, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at her residence, following an extended illness.

She was born June 8, 1935, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Woodrow Wilson Gum and Beatrice Elmira Mosser Gum.

On Sept. 4, 1969, at Elkins, she was married to Charles Richard "Charlie" Siler, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Christopher David Siler of Elk Garden; and and three daughters, Sue Ellen Miller and husband, Ricky, of Elkins, Patricia SeLane and husband, David Cawley, of Burlington, Vt., and Debra Sue Hall and husband, Patrick, of San Jose, Calif.; one brother, David Gum and wife, Kathy, of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Betty Wilfong and husband, Ed, of Elkins, Jean Haddix and husband, Elmer, of Canton, Ohio, and Libby Smith of Snow Hill, N.C., and six grandchildren, Anthony Michael Siler, Hayden Mitchell Siler, Ricky Leon Miller Jr., Cody Hunter Miller and Kendall and Royce Hall also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Joe and Birchie Gum; her paternal grandparents, Judd and Mary Ellen Mosser; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Wanda Phillips Siler; one sister Becky White; and three brothers-in-law, Mike Smith, Dick White and Doyle Bohon.

Mrs. Siler worked for 23 years at District 8 of the West Virginia Division of Highways before retiring as the personnel manager.

She enjoyed sewing and made wedding dresses for local brides. She was an accomplished painter and a member of the Randolph County Artist Guild. She bowled for many years, loved to travel, spending time in the outdoors and with her grandchildren.

She worked as campaign manager for several years for former Sen. Jae Spears.

Mrs. Siler was a member of the St. Brendan Catholic Church.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A wake service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. John Sarraga presiding. The Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, at St. Brendan Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Father Donald X Higgs, VF will be the celebrant and interment will follow in St. Brendan Cemetery.

Martha L. Digman

Martha Lorraine Canfield Digman, 69, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 9:55 p.m. Friday, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 13, 1935, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Bernard Guy Canfield and Beulah Bright Canfield.

On Feb. 20, 1965, she married Maurice Edwin "Joe" Digman, who preceded her in death on Aug. 14, 2006.

She is survived by one son, Jerry Digman and wife, Lisa, of Elkins; and three grandchildren, Lauren, Jennifer and Mason Digman. One brother, Leslie S. Canfield of Warren, Ohio; one sister, Ida Mae Canfield Swecker and husband, Edward L. Swecker, of Mechanicsville, Md.; and five nieces and three nephews\ also survive.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Jack Canfield and John Howard Canfield; and one sister-in-law, Jo Ann Canfield.

Mrs. Digman was a homemaker and a former employee of G.C. Murphy. She was a volunteer at the former Memorial General Hospital. She was a member of the Randolph County Senior Center and IOOF Lodge 116 of Elkins. She was a member of the Israel United Methodist Church.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today by members of IOOF Lodge No. 116 of Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Charles Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.

Owen M. Lee

Another family member has passed away, the Rev. Own M. Lee of Buckhannon, at his home on March 22, 2009, at the age of 91.

He was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Upshur County, a son of the late Quincy Adams and Mary Crawford Lee.

On Aug. 14, 1937, he married Opal Lucille Crites, who preceded him in death two years earlier to the day on March 22, 2007.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Odel and Orland Lee; six sisters, Agnes Marsh, Isabelle Hyre, Donice Golden, Martha Young, Dollie Hardman and Madeline Lee; and one grandson, Ronald Simmons II.

The Rev. Lee is survived by seven sons, Kenneth Lee and wife Hellen, of Buckhannon, Dale Lee and wife, Jean, of Belington, David Lee and wife, Kitty, of Elkins, Wayne Lee and wife, Patty, of Buckhannon, Jerry Lee and wife, Barbara, of French Creek, Ronald Lee of Buckhannon and Stephen Lee and fiancee, Angie, of Buckhannon; six daughters, Eloise Tenney and husband, Eldon, of Buckhannon, Jo Ann Bleigh and husband, Denzil, of Buckhannon, Mary Johnson and husband, Jim, of Hillsboro, Linda Haller and husband, Buck, of Elkins, Evelyn Utt and husband, Carroll, of Morgantown and Patricia Deusenberry of Elkins; two brothers, Robert Lee and wife, Rose, of Camden and Berlin Lee and wife, Joann, of Rock Cave; one sister, Maxine Canter of Fishing Camp; and 28 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Lee was with the United Methodist Conference for 16 years and the Union Mission Conference for more than 30 years. He served as a school bus driver for several years with Upshur County Board of Education and enjoyed farming, truck driving and timbering, but his first love was the Lord.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home in Buckhannon. The Rev. Lee will lie in state from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Buckhannon Union Mission Church where a funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Estes officiating. Burial will follow in the Lee Cemetery at Kanawha Head.

Patrick Mayhew

Patrick Ryan Mayhew Jr., 44, a resident of Route 4, 4-H Road, Philippi, passed away, Thursday, March 19, 2009, unexpectedly.

He was born Sept. 6, 1964, at Keyser, a son of Patrick R. Mayhew Sr. of Elkins and Peggy J. Ray of Mill Creek, who survive.

Also surviving are his companion of eight years, Belinda Jones of Philippi; one daughter, Michelle L. Mayhew and companion, Chris Tackett, of Mil Creek; two sons, Bobby R. Mayhew and companion, Jeannie Scott, of Huttonsville and Jessie L. McCune of Huttonsville; one stepdaughter, Jamie Ware of Elkins; one stepson, Les and wife, Janet Schoonover, of Buckhannon; two sisters, Brenda L. and husband, Dayton Taylor, of Mill Creek and Diana L. and husband, Larry Beverage, of Huttonsville; one brother, David A. and wife, Becky Mayhew, of Mill Creek; two granddaughters, Olivia Mayhew and Alyssa Tackett; seven stepgrandchildren; maternal grandmother, Dixie Ray of Mill Creek; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas W. Ray; and paternal grandparents, Paul and Thelma Mayhew.

Mr. Mayhew was employed as a farmer for Poling's Angus Farm in Philippi. He was an avid outdoorsman, and was Methodist by faith.

Friends were received at Wright Funeral Home on March 22. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home at 1 p.m. today to travel to Poling's Family Cemetery for a graveside service at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Alicia Rapking officiating. Interment will follow in the Poling Family Cemetery.

Catherine Smith

Catherine Genevieve Shearer Smith, R.N., 93 a resident of the Harpertown community, Elkins, and more recently a resident of the Hospice Care In Patient Center at Elkins, departed this life Sunday evening, March 22, 2009, at the center.

She was born Thursday, Jan. 13, 1916, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late James Bernard Shearer and Margaret Aloysius Dempsey Shearer.

On Nov. 27, 1943, she was married to Phil Brooks Smith, who preceded her in death Sept. 24, 2006.

To that union were born two children, Philip B. Smith of Elkins and Patricia Ann Smith Gabbert of Waynesburg, Ky. Also surviving are one granddaughter, Nicole Leigh Gabbert Walls, and husband, Larry D. Walls Jr., one great-granddaughter, Carly Elisabeth Walls; one great-grandson, Steven Thomas Walls; one sister, Anastasia Josephine Danser; and four nephews and four nieces.

Preceding her in death were four brothers, Patrick Henry, James Bernard, William Francis and Andrew Joseph Shearer; four sisters, Gertrude Allen, Mary Christina Shearer, Rosemary Cogis and Roseann Shearer; and one son-in-law, Ben W. Gabbert Jr.

She was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School at Weston with the class of 1936. In 1937, she entered St. Mary's School of Nursing in Clarksburg and graduated with an registered nursing degree in 1940. From 1940 to 1943, she worked private duty and as a staff nurse at St. Mary's Hospital, and from 1952 to 1986, she worked as head nurse in obstetrics and supervisor at Davis Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Smith's request for cremation was honored. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Brendan Catholic Church on Saturday, March 28 at 11 a.m. The Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, V.F. will be the presider and a private family interment will follow at a later date.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to the Hospice Care In Patient Center, 169 Diamond St., Elkins, W.Va. 26241 or to the St. Brendan Catholic Church Statue Fund, P.O. David R. Smith

David Ray Smith, age 37, passed away, Thursday, March 19, 2009.

He was born Dec. 16, 1971, at Lafayette, La., a son of Larry and Joyce (Warren) Smith.

David graduated from Tygarts Valley High School in Mill Creek where he was a standout member of the football and track teams. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, annually attending the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte and was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan.

Survivors include his children, David Anthony "Gage" Smith of Streetsboro, Ohio, Todd Jacob "TJ" Smith of Ravenna, Ohio, and Joshua Knapp of Uniontown, Ohio; parents, Larry and Joyce Smith of Mill Creek; siblings: Mike Smith of Mill Creek, Jennifer (Jeff) Ratliff of Paris Township, Ohio, Jeffrey (Gina) Smith of Mill Creek, John Smith of Mill Creek and Brian Smith of Mill Creek; two nieces; four nephews; and his dearest friends, Todd Bartlett and April Knapp.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Phyllis Smith; his friend, Marci Piltz; and his nephew. Christopher.

Cremation has taken place and friends will be received Wednesday, March 25, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, Ohio. A memorial service will be officiated by Pastor Todd Corley on Friday at 6 p.m. at Grace Ministries in Valley Head.

Henry Higgins

Henry Higgins, 74, a resident of the Highland Park community, passed away at 2:25 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2009, at the home of his son, Tony Higgins, on the Laurel Mountain Road.

Born July 10, 1934, at Mill Creek, he was the son of the late Ernest and Myrtle Taylor Higgins.

Henry is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Higgins of Philippi; four sons, Michael Lee "Mike" Higgins of Moorefield, Timothy Higgins of Moundsville, John Henry Higgins of Proctor and Anthony "Tony" Higgins of Laurel Mountain Road; three sisters, Lona Everett of Belington, Helen Anderson of Wellsburg and Patty Everson of Virginia; and five brothers, Ronald Higgins of Wellsburg, James Higgins and Jack Higgins of Elkins, Michael Lynn Higgins of Chenoweth Creek and Donald Higgins of Dotson Run. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Higgins.

Henry was a veteran having served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired coal miner having been employed with Bethlehem Coal Co. No. 108. He was a member of the FOE No. 2344 of Elkins.

Friends were received Fridayat Runner Funeral Home. Funeral services were conducted Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Kevin Gainer officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.

Hollie J. Chewning

Hollie Jo Chewning, 40, a former resident of Moorefield, and for the past three months, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Monday, March 23, 2009.

She was born Saturday, Oct. 19, 1968, at Mitchell, S.D., a daughter of the late Thurman Ronald Chewning and Sharon Buhman Chewning Chenoweth, who survives at Elkins.

She had never married.

Surviving are her step father, Loren Chenoweth; three brothers, Kurt Chewning of Wilmington, Del., Albert Chewning and wife, Amy, of Elkins; Thurman Ronald "T.R." Chewning and wife, Holly, of Elkins; two step brothers, Brian Chenoweth and Steve Chenoweth and wife, Shellie; three stepsisters, Vicki, Courtney and Charity Chenoweth; one nephew, Albert; and five nieces, Karli, Calista, Caitlin, Tosha and Brittany.

She was a graduate of Royal High School in Elroy, Wis., with the class of 1988, where she was a member of the track team. She then moved with her family in 1991 to Elkins where she worked at Bruce Hardwood and currently worked at Pilgrim's Pride in Moorefield and Pizza Hut in Petersburg. She loved animals, caring for older people and was a Methodist.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins. On Friday morning, March 27, Hollie will be moved to the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church where friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Dr. William E. Calhoun will officiate and interment will follow in Rowan Memorial Cemetery at Mabie.

Josephine Morrison

Josephine Morrison, 79, of Adrian, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

She was born Aug. 2, 1929, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Raymond and Virgie Smith Gillis.

On Oct. 6, 1945, she was united in marriage to John L. Morrison, who preceded her in death on March 25, 2002.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Gillis.

She is survived by three daughters, Sandra Coffman of French Creek, Patty Morrison of Hatteras Island, N.C., and Linda Dean of Citrus Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Coffman and wife, Cassie, of Buckhannon, John Michael Coffman and wife, Amy, of French Creek, Mitchell Light of Hatteras Island, N.C., and Erich Dean of Zebulon, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Cori and Claire Coffman, both of Buckhannon and John Evan Coffman of French Creek.

Mary K. Hovatter

Mary Kalar "Tootie" Hovatter, 86, a resident of Parsons, went to be with the Lord, Monday afternoon, March 23, 2009, in Morgantown, following a stroke the week before.

She was born Friday, July 21, 1922, at Parsons, a daughter of the late Lloyd Kalar and Lula May Schoonover Kalar Loughry.

She was married to Scott Hovatter, who preceded her in death Sept. 17, 2008.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Louise Hovatter Loughry and husband, Allen, of Parsons; three grandchildren, Kimberly Lynn Betler and husband, Gary, Lisa Ann Loughry and Allen Hayes Loughry II and wife, Kelly; five great-grandchildren, Kayla Kyle, Samantha Betler, Stephanie Betler, Scotty Elwood and Justus Loughry; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Sara Betler; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding her in death were one son, Scotty Lynn Hovatter on July 9, 1971; two brothers, John W. Kalar and Robert L. Kalar; and seven sisters, Jenny Ambrose, Lucille Hinchman, Helen Robinson, Rachel Hovatter, Gladys Barb, Hilda Strawderman and Frances Parsons.

She attended the schools of Tucker County. A member of the ladies auxiliary known as the Daughters of the Rebekah's, she was also a member of the St. John's United Methodist Church of Parsons, where she participated in the St. John's Women's group. Working at the former Tucker County Hospital for numerous years, she was also a caregiver for the elderly. She enjoyed spending her last few years residing with her daughter and son-in-law on Blackman Flats in Hambleton. Her hobbies included baking, reading, sewing, music and spending time with her grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons. Final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 26 at the funeral home parlor. The Rev. John Morrison will officiate and interment will follow in the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons.

Mary M. Moore

Mary Margaret Moore 79, of Huttonsville, entered into eternal life Tuesday March 24, 2009, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born Friday, May 3, 1929, at Huttonsville, a daughter of the late Patrick and Lena Lloyd Shrader.

On Saturday, July 5, 1947, at Huttonsville, she married Edward D. Moore, who preceded her in death in 1973.

She was a lifelong resident of Huttonsville. She attended the schools of Randolph County. Mary was a member of the Valley Independent Baptist Church at Huttonsville.

She was employed as a cook at Nella's Nursing Home in Crystal Springs for several years.

She loved to cook, sew and garden. She especially loved being with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by one grandson, Jarrod Moore; two brothers, Willard Shrader and Howard Shrader; and two sisters, Genevieve Arbogast and Viola Hammonds.

Mary is survived by three sons, "Junior" Roger Wamsley of Elkins, Ralph Lynn Moore of Huttonsville and David Alan Moore of Valley Bend; two daughters, Rita Kay Cool of Huttonsville and Debra Anne Bennett of Huttonsville,; two sisters, "Annie" Arana Howard of Shavers Run and Velma Moore of Mill Creek; six grandsons, Brian Cool and wife, Danielle, of Huttonsville, "Joey" Woods and wife, Gladia, of Valley Head, Bradley Woods and wife, Jennifer, of Mill Creek, Eric Moore of Dailey, Timothy Sharp and wife, Chasity, of Huttonsville and Petey Robinson of Elkins; four granddaughters, Tonya L. Winans and husband, Rob, of Huttonsville, Catherine A. Cool of Huttonsville, Maryann Currence and husband, Matt, of Huttonsville and Marjina Moore of Elkins; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 100 Meadow Lane, Valley Bend. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 27, at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Frank Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in Little Arlington Cemetery at Cravensdale.

David L. Hayes

David L. Hayes, 64, of Durbin, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at his home in Durbin.

Born Dec. 4, 1944, at Tunnelton, he was a son of the late Clarence and Mona Dugger Hayes.

David was a member of Durbin United Methodist Church, was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting, fishing and gardening. He retired from Howes Leather Co. with more that 30 years of service.

In addition to his patents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Gloria Petway, Beatrice Criss and Susan Alban; and four brothers, Wayman, Eugene, Alvie and Billy Hayes.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Sheets Hayes of Durbin; one daughter, Leigh Anne Schiebel and husband, Darrell, of Charlottesville, Va.; two sons, John David Hayes and wife, Pamela, of Buckhannon and Warren Scott Hayes and wife, Lindsey, of Durbin; three sisters, Peggy Bowlby of Tunnelton, Barbara Ringlstetter and husband, Kurt, of Moravian Falls, N.C., and Jane Heard of Hagerstown, Md.; two brothers, Franklin Hayes of Hopemont and Russell Hayes and wife, Pam, of Baltimore, Md.; and five grandchildren, Tim, Ashley, Rachel, John and Heather.

Kevin L. Cogar

Kevin Lee Cogar, 40, of Stanley, Va., passed away Monday, March 23, 2009, in Page County Memorial Hospital in Luray, Va.

He was born Sept. 15, 1968, at Buckhannon, a son of Rebecca J. Campbell Cogar of Buckhannon and the late Harvey H. Cogar.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gary Cogar.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Lynn Stevens Cogar, whom he married on June 16, 1989. Also surviving are his children, Christina Cogar, Danelle Cogar and Devin Cogar, all of Stanley, Va.; two brothers, Terry Cogar and Lara, his wife, of Maryland, and Randy Cogar and Renee, his wife, of Washington; two sisters, Diane Woody of French Creek and Teresa Woody of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

Kevin enjoyed NASCAR, the Pittsburgh Steelers, outdoor grilling and hunting. He loved his family and was a carpenter.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. He will be moved Saturday, March 28, to the Canaan Community Church to lie in state from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., with the services beginning at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Junior Harris officiating. Robert L. Baer Sr.

The Rev. Robert Lee Baer Sr., 69, a resident of Davis Street, Elkins, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday morning, March 25, 2009, at his home.

He was born Sunday, Nov. 5, 1939, at Salisbury, Pa, a son of the late Ralph Baer and Margaret Orner Baer.

On Nov. 5, 1960, at Elkins, he was married to the former Anna Belle Summerfield, who survives.

Also surviving are four children, Deborah See and husband, Chris, of Valley Bend, the Rev. Robert Lee Baer Jr. of Belington, Vicki Pennington and husband, Frank, of Valley Bend and Amy Ware and husband, Bobby, of Elkins; two brothers, Ralph Baer Jr. and wife, Wilda, and Carl Baer and wife, Delores, all of Frostburg, Md; one sister, Linda Arnold and husband, Ralph, of Salisbury, Pa.; and five grandchildren, Adam and Samantha See, Jonathan Baer, Frankie Pennington and Alyssa Ware.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, Carol McKenzie and Anna Mae Hochard.

He was a graduate of Myersdale High School with the class of 1958 and attended trade school and worked as a television repairman at Montgomery Wards of Elkins for 20 years. He later graduated from seminary in Delaware, Ohio, with the class of 2007.

He served as the pastor of the Mingo Charge and most recently pastored the Beverly and Valley Bend United Methodist churches. His greatest love was volunteering for the Tyrand Ministries, raising money for their new bunkhouse which is used for mission work.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins. Final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, at the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Gary Phillips will officiate and interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.

Brock A. Miller, 19, of Volga, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Buckhannon, WV.

He was born Feb. 20, 1990, in Harrison County.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Lisa A. Miller and Robert Frye of Volga; three sisters, Patricia Miller of Clarksburg, Jessica Miller of Nashville, Tenn., and Breanna Frye of Volga; his brother, Brennan Frye of Volga; and his fiance, Breanna Cutright, and their daughter, Brooklyn Miller of Buckhannon. Also surviving are five uncles, Dean Miller of Clarksburg, Barry Miller and Danny Miller, both of Buckhannon, Terry Miller of Volga and John Miller of Alabama; and two aunts, Kathryn Boyles of Scott Depot and Dyann Daugherty of Philippi.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jessie and Sylvia Fox Miller; and uncle, Ronnie A. Miller.

Brock graduated with the class of 2007 from Cornell Abraxia Academy of South Mountain, Pa. He enjoyed his family and friends.

Catherine Genevieve Shearer Smith, R.N., 93, a resident of the Harpertown community, Elkins, and more recently a resident of the Hospice Care In Patient Center at Elkins, departed this life Sunday evening, March 22, 2009, in the center.

Charles Hebb Jr.

Charles William Hebb Jr., 60, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Wednesday evening, March 25, 2009, at his home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1948, at Clarksburg, a son of Charles William Hebb, Sr. and Christine Lee Hebb, who survive.

On Feb. 6, 1976, at Parsons, he was married to the former Madeline "Carol" Stokes, who survives. They had celebrated 33 years of marriage.

Surviving are one son, Rocky Charles Hebb and wife, Nina, of Buckhannon; two stepsons, Michael "Todd" Bolyard and wife, Shelly, of Holly Meadows and David "Scott" Bolyard and wife, Mistie, of Blackman Flats; three daughters, Dana Lynn Corcoran and husband, Rick, of Blackman Flats, Teresa Ann Hebb of Hambleton, and Kimberly Susan Harper and husband, Harold, of St. George; two sisters, Charlotte F. Vanscoy and husband, Alvin, of Porterwood and Carol Ann Lemons and husband, Rick, of Cabins: 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1966. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Vietnam Conflict, where he earned a Purple Heart and other combat medals. He was a coal miner and, at one time, owned his own construction company. He retired in 2002 from the United States Forest Service in the maintenance mechanic department. He was a member of the former Garnett Post 4322 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Parsons. He was an active member of the Sycamore Grove Church at Bull Run, St. George. He was an avid outdoorsman, and he loved camping and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a noted guitar player and songwriter and was well known for his expertise in cooking.

She was born May 30, 1920, in Braxton County, a daughter of the late Archie and Fannie Carder Wright.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Edward Sothen; her second husband, Francis Oldaker; three sisters, Pauline Williams, Montana Ball and Josephine Fortney; a half brother, Okey Wright; and stepmother, Beulah Wright.

Betty Lou Rockwell, 80, of Buchanan Trail West, Mercersburg, Pa., died at 3:40 a.m. March 27, 2009, in the Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born July 20, 1928, in Cove Gap, Pa., she was a daughter of the late George and Melvira Gorsuch Ensinger.

Mrs. Rockwell assisted her husband as a bookkeeper for the former R&H Lumber Company of Merersburg, Pa.

She was a former member of Charlestown United Methodist Church of Cove Gap. She was a member of VFW Post 6241 Ladies Auxiliary of Mercersburg, Pa.

Surviving are her husband, Loyd Junior "LJ" Rockwell, whom she married Aug. 25, 1945; three daughters, Bonita L. Shepherd, Lucinda A. Piper and Jody M. Smith, all of Mercersburg, Pa.; a son, Richard L. (husband of Sharon) Rockwell of Elkins; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. The last of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by six brothers and seven sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 31 in Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc. of Mercersburg, Pa., with the Reverends Harold Yeager, Phyllis Bard and Roy Brake Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg, Pa.

Ginger K. Hoffman

Ginger Kay (Pritt) Hoffman, 49, of Martins Ferry, Ohio, died on Saturday, March 7, 2009, in the Cleveland Clinic at Cleveland, Ohio.

She was born April 19, 1959, at Elkins, the daughter of Gladys Cutright Pritt and the late Frank D. Pritt. She was a Protestant by faith.

Ginger had a deep and special love for her husband, children, grandson, her brothers and sisters and all her friends.

In addition to her mother, surviving are her loving husband, Robert A. Hoffman Sr.; her two sons, Robert A. Hoffman Jr. and his wife, Tonya, and John F. Hoffman and his wife, Teela, all of Martins Ferry, Ohio; six brothers, Mike, Dave, Ronnie, Greg, Cecil and Steve Pritt; a sister, Pam Sayre; a grandson, Dominick Hoffman; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen A. Shafer

Helen Alverta Hovatter Gilmore Shafer, 85, of Parsons and most recently of Nella's Nursing Home entered into eternal life at 10:40 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2009, at Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Monday, July 30, 1923, in Auviltown, a daughter of the late Gay and Grace Grandstaff Hovatter.

Helen is survived by two sons, Jim Gilmore and wife, Judy, of Petersburg and Joe Gilmore Jr. of Parsons; one granddaughter, Marla Hardenburgh of North Carolina; and one grandson, Russell Gilmore of Idaho; four great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

She was employed as a librarian at the Five Rivers Library in Parsons in 1974 and was head librarian for a number of years. Helen was a devoted member of St. Johns United Methodist in Parsons, where she taught Sunday school for 25 years and was active in the Church Women's Group. She enjoyed spending her time sewing, cleaning and loved to read. She was also a member of the WV Eastern Star Chapter 91 in Parsons.

Helen's wishes for cremation were honored and a memorial service will be held Monday, April 13, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the St. Johns Methodist Church , Parsons with the Rev. John Morrison and the Rev. Eli Hostetler officiating. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Five Rivers Public Library, 301 Walnut Street, Parsons, W.Va. 26287.

Jean W. Hovatter

Jean Ware McCauley Hovatter, 73, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Thursday afternoon, March 26, 2009, at her home.

A more comprehensive obituary will be announced Monday.

Lorraine Gnojek

Lorraine Gnojek, 82, a resident of Kerens, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009.

She was born Dec. 24, 1926, at Chicago, Ill., a daughter of the late Stanley and Frances Brodnick.

On Aug. 16, 1946, she was married to John Gnojek, who preceded her in death on July 19, 1999.

Surviving are a sister, Shirley Caffee of Oak Lawn, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Edwin, John and Raymond Brodnick.

Mrs. Gnojek was a homemaker, a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church and the Randolph County Extension Homemakers.

Friends may call from 3 p.m. until 8: p.m. Sunday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A wake service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday from the funeral home chapel with the Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, VF presiding. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday March 30, at St. Brendan Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Father Donald X. Higgs, VF as the celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Thomas.

Luellen Garlow

Luellen Garlow, 80, a resident of Galloway, died Thursday evening, March 26, 2009 in the United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness.

She was born June 22, 1928, a daughter of the late Albert Jack and the late Julia Ellen (Watson) Jack Nay.

She was twice married, first to the late Charles W. Williamson and then to the late Anthony "Ed" Garlow Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Stutler and husband, John, of Galloway and Beth Bolyard and husband, Donald, of Grafton; two sons, Charles "Micky" Williamson and wife, Lucy, of Philippi and Jim Williamson and wife, Karla, of Magnolia, Ohio; two sisters, Helen Rowan of Dearborn Heights, Mich., and Alberta McCauley of Flemington; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Bonnelyn Boyles, Nila Jean Jackson, Juanita Cammack and Augustine Starcher; and by one brother, James Jack.

Mrs. Garlow was a homemaker and was a member of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church at Brownton. She was a member of the Galloway Senior Citizens and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St., Philippi. The Rev. Arthur Malcolm will officiate and interment will follow in the Point Pleasant Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, on Sunday.

Patricia G. Hissom

Patricia Gail "Pat" Hissom, 54, passed away Friday, March 27, 2009, at her home in Davis.

She was born June 17 1954, at Charleston, a daughter of George B. "Corky" Hissom of Charleston and the late Joan B. Hissom.

In addition to her father, she is survived by her stepmother, Lois Hissom of Charleston; and her sister, Connie and Gene Mingus, of Windsor, Ohio. Pat leaves behind her friend and companion of 14 years, Ronald G. Carr; his parents, Elwood and Rosalie Carr; and Ron's three brothers and one sister, Tom and Terry Carr, John and Janenne Carr, Scott Carr and Lisa and Mike Corbitt. Also surviving are a niece, Stephanie (Joel) Rosier of Windsor, Ohio, and SPC Matthew Mingus who is currently serving in Iraq, and several other nieces and nephews.

Pat graduated from Sissonville High School in 1972 and West Virginia University in 1978 with a degree in forestry. She was employed for 25 years at Blackwater Falls State Park as a Naturalist and Recreation Director. She attended Davis United Methodist Church.

At the request of the deceased, her remains were cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at the Davis United Methodist Church Saturday, April 4, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Martin officiating.

The Rev. Robert Lee Baer Sr., 69, a resident of Davis Street, Elkins, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday morning, March 25, 2009, at his home.

The family received friends Friday at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins. Final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Gary Phillips will officiate and interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
