Frances U. Godwin

Frances Ursula Yeager Godwin, 88, a resident of Valley Bend, and more recently a resident of Valentine's Personal Care Home in Elkins, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 6, 2009. She died surrounded by her family, and her passing was peaceful.

Frances was a long-time resident of Valley Bend, having moved there in 1943. Declining health in the past several years brought her to Valentine's. The staff there took wonderful care of our mother and we, her family, are deeply appreciative.

Mrs. Godwin was born June 17, 1920, near the South Dakota and Nebraska border. She was the daughter of Frederick Cleveland Yeager and Frances BeauSeigneur Yeager. Her father was a teacher and her mother a nurse at the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Rosebud, S.D. At the age of 5, Frances moved east to Oil City, Pa., where she was raised by her aunt, Mona Sayres Adams. She attended the schools of Oil City and Meadville, Pa.

Frances is survived by a daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Bruce Rao and her husband, George, of Beverly; and a son, Raymond Guy Godwin of Valley Bend. Two sons preceded her in death, John D. "Danny" Godwin and Gregory Auvil Godwin.

She is also survived by five grandchildren, Stephen Rao, Christopher Rao, Anthony Rao, Annika Godwin and Amelia Godwin, along with Randy, Kim and Marie. Three great-grandchildren also survive, Cassidy Rao, Matthew Rao and Rebecca Rao. Several nieces and nephews also survive, including Mary Lynn Fessler, Charles Skidmore, Jack Skidmore, John Likens, Janet Likens, Pat Yeager, Mary Brown Hefner and their families. She is also survived by her half-sister, Sylvia and Jake Thompson of Durbin.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by brothers, Benedict and Henry; and sisters, Elizabeth, Mary Virginia and Clara.

Among her happiest and proudest accomplishments was raising her four children and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up. She loved her family and was never happier than when they were all together for holidays and family events.

Frances was an accomplished pianist and accompanied her high school classical music groups in competitions in Pennsylvania and New York. The group won several awards. Mrs. Godwin began teaching piano in Valley Bend in the 1950s and continued giving lessons until she was in her early 80s. Hundreds of students took lessons with Mrs. Godwin over the years.

Frances also worked as a waitress at the old Phil's Restaurant in Elkins and was a cook at Homestead Grade School in Dailey. After her children grew up, she worked for a number of years at the Catholic Conference Center in Huttonsville on the old Don Bosco property, was a cook at Camp Tygart in Huttonsville and worked for 12 years at Bishop Hodges Pastoral Center in Huttonsville, from which job she retired in 1995. She was a loving mother, a wonderful homemaker, a devoted friend and was kind and generous to all who knew her. Her smile was beautiful, and her laughter was contagious. She had a wonderful sense of humor and maintained a positive outlook during good times and bad. She loved flowers, especially roses, morning glories and lobelia. Frances enjoyed all seasons, but especially loved the snows of winter.

Frances was a Roman Catholic and was a longtime and devoted member of St. Don Bosco Catholic Church in Huttonsville and later a member of St. John Chapel in Huttonsville. She was a member of the Don Bosco Ladies Guild and was the church organist for many years. For the past three years, she was a member of St. Brendan Parish. Mom's Catholic faith was the rock and the center of her life, and she passed on her faith to her children and their families. She was a shining example of God's love each and every day of her life, and was an inspiration to many, none more so than her children. She was loved by many people and will be missed greatly.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. On Tuesday, at 7 p.m., at the funeral home, a prayer service will be recited by the Very Rev. Gwendaline Burky

Mrs. Gwendaline Wilmoth Burky, 87, of Greensburg, Pa., formerly of Nutter Fort, passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, March 7, 2009, at her daughter's home in Greensburg, Pa.

She was born Dec. 17, 1921, at Kerens, the only child of Lloyd Wilmoth and his wife, Maude McDaniel Wilmoth. She had no brothers or sisters, but after her father tragically died when she was only 5 years old, her uncle Daryl became like a brother to her for the rest of his life.

Surviving are her husband, Norman Burky; a daughter and son-in-law, Marquitta and Michael Guerrera of Greensburg, Pa.; and her grandsons, Christian Guerrera and wife, Emily, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Matthew Guerrera of Greensburg, Pa.

After graduating from Elkins High School with the class of 1939, she attended and graduated from Davis & Elkins College. That was where she met Irene Burky, who became like a sister to her.

While Gwendaline taught French and social studies at Tygarts Valley High School, she remained close friends with Irene. Little did she know, at the time she was also teaching a future sister-in-law, Virginia Fincham.

It wasn't long before Irene invited Gwen to her family home in Helvetia. Burky family lore states that Irene felt sure that Gwen would "hit it off" with her brother, Norman. Irene was right. Norman and Gwendaline were married in Kerens, on Aug. 6, 1950.

After a honeymoon in Virginia Beach, they set up their residence on Kentucky Avenue in Nutter Fort. Two years later they were blessed with the birth of their only child, Marquitta Burky (Guerrera). Gwen and Norman moved one more time, to Norma Avenue in the Bagwell Addition of Nutter Fort, where they lived until late in life.

After marriage, Gwen joined the First Presbyterian Church of Clarksburg. She and Norman regularly attended church, Sunday school, and Presby Weds (now Presbyfriends).

Gwendaline was an active member of Circle Four and the Presbyterian Women of the Church. As befit that time, Gwen was an efficient and accomplished homemaker.

Her desserts were favorites among all the family, and she was frugal enough to keep the family going when Norman was hurt and couldn't work for six months. In later years, as age and health problems increased, she and Norman moved to Greensburg, Pa., to live with their daughter's family.

Friends may call at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St. in Clarksburg from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at the First Presbyterian Church in Clarksburg with the Rev. Susan C. McGhee presiding. Mrs. Burky will lie-in-state at the church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Three Rivers Hospice, 2500 Mosside Boulevard, Monroeville, Pa. 15146. Davis-Weaver service.   From 12 Mar 2009.
