David Edwin Varner, 63, a resident of Central Street, Elkins, departed this life Saturday afternoon, Dec. 13, 2008, at his home.

He was born Tuesday, May 15, 1945, at Elkins, a son of the late Claude Edwin Varner and Arreta Belle Warner Varner.

On March 25, 1972, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Susan K. Mallow, who preceded him in death Jan, 7, 2001.

Surviving are two sisters, Jeannie Simmons and husband, Bud, of Elkins and Marilyn Thorne and husband, Jim, of Belington; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was one infant daughter, Eleanor, who departed this life May 15, 1972.

He attended the schools of Randolph County, was a former employee of the Frazee Lumber Co., the Kitzmiller Lumber Co. and the Hamer Lumber Co. He was an avid sports fan of Elkins High School Tigers, the West Virginia University Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a noted dancer and he loved his special friend, Annie.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dolores Pearle (Paugh) Coontz, 88, a resident of River Circle Drive, Paden City, and a former resident of Locust Avenue, Philippi, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, in Sistersville General Hospital in Sistersville.

She was born Dec. 3, 1920, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Albert S. and Gladys (Kelly) Paugh.

She was united in marriage to Artie Lee Coontz, who preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1983. Surviving are one daughter, Cherita Lea and husband, Keith L. Daugherty, of Paden City; two grandchildren, Christine Elzine Foster of Philippi and Eric and wife, Autumn Daugherty, of Paden City; six great-grandchildren; Anthony, Shawn and Skylar Foster, Darien, Aubrey and Kierra Daugherty.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Denver K. Paugh.

Dolores retired from the Barbour County Board of Education as a school teacher with 32 years service. She was a member of the Barbour County Association of Retired School Employees, a member of the West Virginia Farm Bureau and the Paden City American Legion Ladies Auxiliary 86. She was a member of the Philippi United Methodist Church.

Friends were received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi Dec. 14 and a memorial service was conducted by the Ladies Auxiliary. George "Dude" Lloyd, 94, of Helvetia, the Hemlock community, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at his home.

He was born Feb. 18, 1914, at Palace Valley, a son of the late Wilbur and Lona Shahan Lloyd.

On June 9, 1936, he married Elva Carpenter, who survives.

Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Richard, Joseph and Oren Tom Lloyd; and one sister, Christina Hickman.

Mr. Lloyd was a timber cutter.

Shirley Joseph, 97, of Brandywine, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, in Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

Amy Jo Bowling, 37, of 105 Jackson Ave., Highland Park, passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at her residence.

Born Feb. 12, 1971, at Davis, she was the daughter of the late Anna Bell Bowling.

Surviving are two children, Alicia and Justin Tenney of Highland Park.

Betty Lou March, 72, of Buckhannon, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, in St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon.

She was born Oct. 15, 1936, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Paul and Clara House Rowan.

On Feb. 2, 1954, she married Matthew R. Marsh Sr., who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Paula Jean Loudin and husband, Tom, of Scranton, S.C.; one son, Matthew R. Marsh Jr. of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Angela Rose Duke of Parkersburg; one grandson, William Gene Duke of French Creek; one great-granddaughter, Shyla Duke of French Creek; two great-grandsons, Johnathon Duke of French Creek and Allen Duke of Parkersburg; and one aunt, Mary Small of Mt. Nebo.

Mrs. Marsh was a seamstress for Reidboards Manufacturer.

Mr. Jerry Boyd Oldaker Sr., 63, a resident of Elkins, departed this life at 3:40 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, in Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown, following a short illness.

He was born Sept. 24, 1945, at Belington, a son of the late Jacob Boyd and Elva Gay Ware Oldaker.

In addition to his former wife, Diane Miller, Mr. Oldaker is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Lynne Stover; and five sons Joshua Phillips, Mathew McCauley Silman, Jerry Boyd Oldaker Jr., James Allen Older and Andrew Tracy Oldaker. Also surviving are one brother, Lonnie Oldaker; 15 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant child and two brothers Gerald W. Oldaker and Dale Oldaker.

Mr. Oldaker attended school in Baltimore, Md., and was a former taxi cab driver at Elkins.

Okie Cordle Metz, 85, a resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas, departed this life early Sunday morning, Dec.14, 2008, in the home.

She was born Tuesday, March 27, 1923, at Flatwoods, Ky., a daughter of the late James Henry Cordle and Nellie Mae Cordle.

On June 4, 1943, at Dillinger, Pa., she was married to Artie Carl Metz, who preceded her in death Aug. 25, 1984.

Surviving are two sons, Kenny Metz and wife, Maxine, of Montrose and Eugene Dale Metz of Maryland; four daughters, Sharon Pifer and husband, Dale, and Rose Humphrey, all of Parsons, Judy Stone and husband, Fred, and Glenda Gibbs, all of Cape Coral, Fla.; five brothers, Richard Cordle, Ron Cordle and Virgil Cordle all of Kentucky, Paul Cordle of Indiana, and Bill Cordle of Florida; two sisters, Viola Livingston of Kentucky and Mary Griffith of Georgia; and several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by, one son, Carl James "Bean" Metz,; three daughters, Mae Metz, Geneva Sullivan and Mary Sampson; one brother, Ted Cordle; two sisters, Martha Jean Fortune and Shirley Ann Stanley; one grandson, Michael Shawn Humphrey; and two great-grandchildren, Dixie Lee Joseph and Charles Joseph.

She attended the Belfont School at Kentucky. She attended the Hendricks Free Methodist Church. She was an employee of the former Parsons Nursery Bottom for more than 26 years. She loved to cook and garden.

Patricia G. George, 70, a resident of Naomi Court, Fairmont, and a former resident of the Boulder Community in Barbour County, passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at her home, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

She was born March 4, 1938, at Rittman, Ohio, the oldest daughter of the late Earl and Audra (Baker) Lambert.

She was united in marriage on Dec. 18, 1965 to Hertsel H. George, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Bill George and fiance, Joyce Keefover, of Fairmont; one sister, Carolyn Lambert of Columbus, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Glenna G. Propst of Philippi; two brothers, Gerald "Jerry" and wife, Jo Lambert, of Stroudsburg, Pa., and James "Jim" and wife, Bonnie, of Las Vegas, Nev.; one grandson, Ty George; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. George was a retired school teacher with 35 years service, 15 of which were in Rittman, Ohio, and 20 years as a first grade teacher at Volga-Century Elementary School. Pat was an active leader in the Boulder United Methodist Church where she played piano and taught adult Sunday school. She received a bachelor's degree from Kent State University and continued her education at West Virginia University working toward a master's degree. Pat was a wonderful cook and baker. She enjoyed spending time with all of her friends and family. She loved the Lord and was an inspiration to everyone.

Robert G. Weese, 87, of Phoenix, Ariz., departed this life Friday, Dec. 12, 2008.

He was born Dec. 24, 1920, at Elkins, a son of the late John D. and Eva Fansler Weese.

He was married to Yvonne Sponaugle, who preceded him in death June 6, 1991.

Mr. Weese was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired after 32 years with the U.S. Postal Service.

Surviving are two sisters, Virginia Smith and husband, Ray, and Delores Woody, all of Elkins.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Weese and John R. Weese.

Edythe Lucille Marsh, 88, of Pea Ridge Road, Route 2, Philippi, died Monday evening, Dec. 15, at her home, following an extended illness.

She was born June 26, 1920, at Murphy, N.C., a daughter of the late Floyd Thamer and Hazel Elizabeth (Marshall) Frey.

On Aug. 29, 1939, she was married to James Elbert Marsh, who preceded her in death on Oct.10, 1989.

Survivors include two sons, Gary A. Marsh and wife, Judy A., Jack L. Marsh and wife, Jean, all of Philippi; one daughter, Vicky Jill Armstrong of Belington; three brothers, Charles "Boomer" Frey of Philippi, and George C. "Gus" Frey and John T. "Tom" Frey, both of Moatsville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret "Babe" Marsh, Christine Morris and Joan Frey; six brothers, Floyd T. "Bus" Frey Jr., Daniel Harold "Enoch" Frey, Robert "Grapy" Frey, James William "Brandy" Frey, Darl Eugene "Bevo" Frey, Ralph Marshall "Chick" Frey; two stepbrothers, Donald N. and Louis D. Semmelman; and a grandson, Francis G. Marsh.

Mrs. Marsh was a former cook for the Barbour County Board of Education and was a former deputy assessor for Barbour County.

She attended Souls Harbor Tabernacle and was a Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Laurel Mountain Post 410 VFW. She was a member of the Barbour County Senior Citizens Center.

Della G. Dadisman, 93, of Route 4, Philippi, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at the home of her niece.

Ella M. Settle

Ella Mae Potts Settle, 84, a resident of Oak Drive, Elkins, departed this life Tuesday morning, Dec. 16, 2008, at her home.

She was born Saturday, Feb. 9, 1924, at Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter of the late William Matthew Potts and Hazel Jane Mitch Potts.

On Nov. 12, 1949, at Newportville, Pa., she was married to Albert Edward Settle, who survives at Elkins.

Surviving are two sons, Albert Edward Settle II of Elkins and David Mitchell Settle and wife, Dawn, of Pottsville, Pa.; two daughters, Amy Settle and husband, Richard Recording, of Boiling Springs, Pa., and Linda Aliveto and husband, John, of Elkins; one brother, Joseph Potts of California; one sister, Hazel Jane Hornickel of Bensalem Township, Pa.; and nine grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were five brothers and sisters.

She was a graduate of Bensalem High School, received her nurses training at St. Luke's Children's Hospital, Philadelphia where she received her degree as a registered nurse and she received a Bachelor of Science degree from the West Chester University, Philadelphia. She had worked as a homemaker and as a school nurse, was a veteran of World War II, having served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, was a member of the H. W. Daniel's Post 29, American Legion, was a member of the Davis Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary for more than 20 years and the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Settle's request for cremation was honored. A memorial service will be conducted on Monday, Dec, 29, at 11 a.m. at the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church. Jackie L. Canter

Jackie Lee Canter, 75, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at his home, under the care of St. Joseph Hospice.

He was born Feb. 17, 1933, in Webster County, a son of the late Denny and Elizabeth Riffle Canter.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Jean Carlyle Canter, four sisters, six brothers and one stepson.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine M. Lee Farrar Canter, who he married Oct. 3, 1998.

Also surviving are one son, Dennis Canter of Buckhannon; three daughters, Cheryl Winans of Volga, Bonnie Bennett and Joyce Ball of Buckhannon; three stepdaughters, Carol Jean White of Mannington, Sandra Kay Bowman and Sherry Waybright of Buckhannon; two brothers, Roger "Doc" Canter and Dale Gay Canter of Buckhannon; four sisters, Jean Claypool, Josephine Fitzgerald, Betty Bowman and Trecia Lowther of Buckhannon; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He was a former member of the Warren District Volunteer Fire Department. He had formerly been employed by Benson's Trucking and Hodgesville Trucking. He was retired from Reidboard Sewing Factory after 35 years of service as a machine mechanic. Jack also enjoyed woodworking.

Charles Simmons

Charles Edward "Charlie" Simmons Jr., 54, of Philippi, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at his home.

He was born Aug. 20, 1954, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Charles Edmiston and Jessie Mae Prince Simmons.

In addition to this parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Gweth Smith, Clara Hyre and Lyndall Shreves; and one half brother, Steve Fidler.

He is survived by one son, Charles Edward Simmons III and wife, Beatrice Marie, of Buckhannon; one sister, Ola Mae Parsons and husband, Lindsey, of Lanexa, Va.; a half brother, Jim Fidler of Buckhannon; two nieces; two nephews; two great-nieces; and three great-nephews.

Charlie worked as a laborer and was a Christian by faith.

Troy L. Shahan, 72, a resident of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, Belington, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 17, in the Good Samaritan Center, following an extended illness.

He was born Dec. 29, 1935, at Belington, a son of the late Chester and Ruth (Delauder) Shahan.

Survivors include one son, Wesley Arden Shahan of Ohio; two daughters, Etta Estella Shahan of Virginia, and Alice Marie Coffman of Philippi; four sisters, Patty Canfield and Lucille Johnson, both of Belington, Dorothy Tincher of Philippi and Donna Jean Taylor of Norton; five brothers, Waldo Shahan, Gene Shahan, Frank Shahan, Ronald Shahan and Larry Shahan, all of Belington; two grandchildren, Lona Shahan and Justin Shahan.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Wanda Compton, Shirley Shahan and Rochella Shahan; and by one brother, Lee Edward Shahan.

Mr. Shahan was a veteran of the U. S. Army including a three year active duty enlistment and an extended term in the Army Reserve. He was a retired lineman-electrician and was a member of Laurel Mountain Post 410, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

At Mr. Shahan's request, his remains were cremated. Interment of the ashes, in Belington Fraternal Cemetery will be scheduled at a later date. Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel is entrusted with arrangements. From 19 Dec 2008.

Ila T. Judy

Ila T. (Park) Judy, 108, of Maysville, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at the Grant County Nursing Home.

Family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Rev. Stanley Kile and Pastor Rebecca L. Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville. From 20 Dec 2008.

Linda S. Canfield

Linda S. Canfield, 61, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at her home.

She was born Feb. 12, 1947, at Buckhannon, the daughter of the late Howard and Tina Smith Teter.

On Aug. 28, 1965, she married Roy "Ed" Canfield, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, David Canfield and wife, Sue Ann, of Levittown, Pa., and Allen Canfield and wife, Holly, of Buckhannon; two grandchildren; and three brothers, Bill Teter and wife, Lou, Tom Teter and wife, Judy, and Jerry Teter and wife, Teresa, all of Buckhannon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Bob Teter.

Mrs. Canfield was a lease clerk at Equitable Resources and attended Reger Chapel United Methodist Church.

Thelma E. Hymes

Thelma Edith White Hymes, 88, of Weston, formerly of Junior, died Thursday evening, Dec. 18, 2008, in the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, where she had been a patient since 2002.

She was born June 10, 1920, at Beverly, Randolph County, a daughter of the late Floyd and Alice (Rush) Rosencrance.

On March 28, 1948, she was united in marriage to James Guy White, who preceded her in death on May 5, 1966, and on May 15, 1971, she was married to Warren H. Hymes, who preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1986.

Survivors include one daughter, Rita L. Wamsley and husband, Ben, of Weston; one son, James G. White Jr. and wife, Debi, of Beverly; five stepgrandchildren, Vincent Mastrogiuseppe, Sarah Marsh, Bryan Wamsley, Becky Corbin and Debbie Wolfe.

She was preceded in death by one son, Lanna James White; two sisters, Hilda Bilbrey and Ruby Moore; and two brothers, Richard Rosencrance and Norman Rosencrance.

Mrs. Hymes was a former employee of the Montgomery Ward Store in Elkins, the Singer Sewing Center in Elkins, Reidbord Brothers in Elkins and Masketeers Inc. in Belington. She was a former member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where she had served as Sunday school superintendent until its closing. She was currently a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church at Junior.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Avenue, Belington. The Rev. Hal Hevener, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Weston, will officiate and interment will follow in the Trinity Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, on Sunday.

Theresa Ann Holloway, 49, of Upper Tract, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at her home.
