Junior Reese

"Junior" Reese Thomas Evans, 81, of Hodgesville, passed away Nov. 14, 2008, at his home.

He was born Sept. 29, 1927, a son of the late Rhys Thomas and Elva Sines Evans.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Ruby Marple Evans, on Aug. 4, 2003.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Delana Harris Evans; and three sisters, Jean Hardy, Sarah Campbell and Mable Gillespie.

He is survived by one son, Gary W. Evans and wife, Inis Simons Evans, of Buckhannon; two grandchildren, Delana "Dee" Evans Ryan and husband, Bobby, of Hodgesville and Jeromy W. Evans and wife, Jamie Phillips Evans, of Heavner Grove; two stepgrandchildren, Samuel Ryan and Katlyn Ryan of Morgantown; four great-grandchildren, Cody and Cade Garrett and Kaitlyn and Emily Evans; one sister, Mildred Ann Carpenter of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Evans was a Christian and attended Good Hope Tabernacle Church. He was one of the owners/bosses of Dexcar Queen Coal Co., Hodgesville Trucking Co. and Three Musketeers Inc. He had the proud heritage of coming from a coal mining family. He owned several rental house and apartments in the Buckhannon area. He was blessed to always remain a hard worker, even after retirement. His love of family and numerous friends was always found in his light hearted, generous personality.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Holly J. Roger Lee Simmons, 57, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, died Friday, November 14, 2008 at the UVA Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Anna C. Miller

Anna C. "Maw" Crites Miller, 75, of Fisher, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at her residence.

Family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Schaeffer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Revs. Wade Armentrout and Joseph Eversole officiating. Burial will be in Lahmansville Cemetery.  From 18 Nov 2008.

Billie R. Hockenberry

Billie Rae Hockenberry, 79, of Clarksburg, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

She was born Aug. 18, 1929, at Wendell, a daughter of the late Granville R. and Donis B. Dean Yokum.

On June 5, 1954, she married Willard C. Hockenberry, who preceded her in death on May 12, 1997.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Robert and Freddie Yokum.

She is survived by two sons, John and Ross Hockenberry of Clarksburg; one sister, Marion L. Andrews of Tennerton; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hockenberry was a homemaker and a member of the Duff Street United Methodist Church in Clarksburg.

Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from noon until 2 p.m., the funeral hour with Pastor Holly J. Hoover officiating. Della V. Rollins

Della Viola Rollins, 49, of Crawford, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, in Charleston Area Medical Center, following an extended illness.

She was born May 18, 1959, in Upshur County, a daughter of James E. Robinson of Crawford and the late Betty L Robinson.

She was married Sept. 11, 1977, to Ronald Lee Rollins, who preceded her in death on July 24, 1980.

She is survived by a special companion of 27 years, Charles "Ed" Fisher; one son, James and wife, Toni Fisher, of Crawford; four daughters, Jennese and husband, Chuck Green, of Hacker Valley, Betty and husband, Frank Boyer, of Crawford, Rosella and husband, Steve Jones, of Crawford and Lena Rollins Samples of Buckhannon; and nine grandchildren, Sierra Rollins, Hunter, Timberlee and Brooklynn Dehainaut, Ceanna Boyer, Christopher, Noah and Austin Green and Anthony McCartney. Also surviving are six brothers, Elbert (Karen) Robinson, Raymond Robinson, Earl Robinson, Ervin (Nellie) Robinson, Pete Robinson and Calvin (Tina) Robinson; and two sisters, Sue (Arnie) Hinkle and Virginia (Leonard) Fisher. Several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Robinson; and one sister-in-law, Mary Fidler.

Friends will be received Thursday, Nov. 20, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Diana Hinkle

Diana "Sue" Hinkle, 54, of Riverton, died Nov. 16, 2008, in Winchester Medical Center at Winchester, Va.

She was born May 16, 1954, at Onego, a daughter of the late Fred Charles Cook and Beulah Long Cook.

She was married to Rex Allen Hinkle Sr., who preceded her in death March17, 1989

She is survived by two sons, Rex Allen Hinkle Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Harman and Joshua Hinkle of Cabins; one grandchild, Brian Hinkle of Cabins; five sisters, Mary Frances Thompson and husband, Stanley, of Riverton, Kathleen Thompson of Petersburg, Rose Ann Sites and husband, Carl, of Riverton, Betty Louise Hite of Riverton and Eva Jean Clark and husband, Charles, of Cabins; and three brothers, Charles Edward Cook and wife, Brenda, of Upper Tract, David Dwight Cook and wife, Brenda, of Riverton and Bradley Earl Cook and and wife, Lesley, of Harrisonburg, Va.

She was also preceded in death by one infant brother, William.

She was a homemaker, attended North Fork Baptist Church and had attended Circleville High School.

Doranell Post Kiddy, 88, of Buckhannon, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, in Holbrook Nursing Home.

She was born Sept. 11, 1920, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Comradore Dewey and Maggie Gay Lantz Post.

She is survived by special friends, Harold and Elsie Lewis.

Doranell was a member of the North Buckhannon United Methodist Church.

Louella Ketterman

Louella Mae Ketterman, 60, a resident of Kerens, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 7, 1948, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Clarence Woodrow Lamb and Shirley Marie Vance Lamb.

She is survived by her companion of 25 years, Frank Kyle; two daughters, Janet Shank and husband, Kenny, of Elkins and Stephanie Bender and husband, Tim, of Mill Creek; one brother, Michael Lamb and friend, Pat Brandani; two sisters, Patty Mallow and husband, Herman, and Shirley Wilfong and husband, Dewayne, all of Elkins; and two granddaughters, Autumn Shank and Ashley Belt and husband, Ronnie, all of Elkins. Also surviving are her special extended family, Harold and Patty Shepard, Larry and Ardith Turner, Millie Hendon and Eddie Watson, Dick and Sue Jones, Jeff and Billie Kyle, Allen Kyle and Sue Curtis, Wally Kyle and Tammie Nelson, John Kyle and Cathryn Goodnow; several nieces and nephews; and her pets, cat, Spot, and dog, Tonto.

Louella was employed at Aegis of Elkins prior to becoming disabled. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and was a Protestant by faith.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. She will then be moved to Mountain State Memorial Gardens where a graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. with Pastor Terry Cannon officiating. Interment will follow. Neil F. Boggs

Neil Fitzwater Boggs, 73, of Vienna, Va., and formerly of Franklin, died Nov. 9, 2008, in the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., following a long illness.

He was born Dec. 13, 1934, at Harrisonburg, Va., the son of Brooke McCoy Boggs and Mary Elizabeth Fitzwater Boggs, formerly of Elkins.

He was retired after working in the Washington, D.C., area for various employers including the Chrysler Corp., the county of Fairfax, FNMA, FHLMC and Department of Defense contractors. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College and West Virginia University (MBA).

Following a memorial service in northern Virginia, a graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin with the Rev. Kevin Hand officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1920-H Medical Ave., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. Zenna F. Ratliff

Zenna Fidler Ratliff, 97, of Morgantown, passed away Nov. 17, 2008, at the home of her daughter, Emma Jean Cross, where she had resided for several years.

She was born May 23, 1911, in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Burton and Ora Davis Fidler.

She married Hughart "Jake" Ratliff on May 16, 1927, in Upshur County.

She was a homemaker for many years as she and the children traveled with her husband as he moved to various communities in Barbour, Hardy, Nicholas, Randolph and Upshur counties to manufacture rustic rail fence. She later worked as a dietician at the West Virginia Wesleyan College Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity house, Oxford Supper Club and the Fraternal Order of Elks. She attended Woodland United Methodist Church in Morgantown. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by loved ones, friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her children, Ruth Kathryn "Kate" and Armand Ricottilli of Kingsville, Billy J. and Margaret Ratliff of Buckhannon, Jimmie L. and Anna Dell Ratliff of Buckhannon and twins, Ima Jean and Carl Goodwin of Buckhannon and Emma Jean Cross of Morgantown; grandchildren, Don and Sue Ricottilli of Kingsville, Diana (Ratliff) Bargeloh of Buckhannon, Steve and Marty Ratliff of Buckhannon, Glen and Melanie Ratliff of Coalton, Pam (Ratliff) and Greg Yeager of Belington, Carl Jr. and Mary Goodwin of Buckhannon, Neal Goodwin of Parkersburg, Doug and Lou Ellen Goodwin of Morgantown and Kevin Goodwin of Buckhannon; 11 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Icie May Carpenter of Cocoa, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Harold Fidler and Hurlie Fidler; three sisters, Thelma Cummings, Flo Royer and Ottie Milantoni; and three grandchildren, Richard Rowe Cross Jr., Linda L. (Ratliff) Ferrell Carpenter and Armand Nicholas "Nick" Ricottilli Jr.

Dainer Channell

Dainer Channell, 60, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center where he had been a patient for the past four years.

He was born Oct. 15, 1927, at Valley Head, the son of the late John D. Channell and Mable Swacker Channell.

Surviving are one brother, Ted Channell of Valley Head; and one nephew, John and Barbara Channell of Valley Head.

Also preceding him in death were six brothers, Denver, Olen, Estelle, Donald, Troy and Charles Channell.

Dainer was a store clerk for many years. He attended the schools of Randolph County and the Oak Grove Methodist Church at Valley Head.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Runner Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Runner chapel. Erlo Peterson

Erlo "Pete" Peterson, 93, who made his home for the past six years with his daughter, Joanne Fallon of Amherst, Ohio, and formerly of Buckhannon, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, in Wesleyan Village Heath Care Nursing Home in Amherst, Ohio.

He was born April 4, 1915, at Weston, a son of the late James B. and Columbia Corathers Peterson.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy Osburn Peterson, whom he married on Aug. 19, 1934; and three children, Joanne Fallon and husband, Leo, of Amherst, Ohio, Kae Smith and husband, Jerry, of Avella, Pa., and Kenneth Peterson and wife, Karen, of Hampton, Va. Also surviving are six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Peterson of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild; one sister, Rita Linger; and three brothers, Cecil, Herbert and Ancil Peterson.

Mr. Peterson retired at the age of 79 having worked at the Perce Ross Clothing Store and Straders Clothing Store in Buckhannon. He was a member of the Stone Coal United Methodist Church and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Friends will be received from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, at Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. William C. Max W. Sellers

The Rev. Max W. Sellers, 84, of Kettering, Ohio, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, in Hospice of Dayton.

He was born in Meyersdale, Pa., on April 24, 1924.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy; two children, Eric W. Sellers and wife, Jill, of Charlottesville, Va., and J. Ellen Holt of Chapel Hill, N.C.; five grandchildren, Kathryn and Laural Sellers, Myles, Cozbi and Kyle Holt; one sister, Lois Bowman and Roger of Lake Placid, Fla.; and one sister-in-law, Donna Lester of Elkins.

He was a veteran of World War II. He is a graduate of West Virginia University and Boston University School of Theology. He served United Methodist churches in Ohio and worked for Kettering Medical Center in various positions. He was a member of the Rotary Club.

Memorial and committal services will be conducted at noon Saturday, Nov. 22, at Tygart Valley Presbyterian Church with burial in the Brick Church Cemetery. The Rev. Joanne Glacer will officiate.  From 20 Nov 2008. 

William Thompson

William Warren "Barney" Thompson, 84, a resident of Whitmer, passed away Tuesday evening, Nov. 18, 2008, in Mansfield Place at Philippi.

He was born May 4, 1924, at Whitmer, a son of the late William Perry and Cena Florence Mullenax Thompson.

He had never married.

Surviving are two brothers, Philip Thompson of Elkins and Donald Thompson of Loraine, Ohio; and two sisters, Lucy Lambert of Wiley Ford and Caddie White of Elkins.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Myrtle Helmick and Arlene Cook; and three brothers, Lon, Henry and Roy Thompson.

Mr. Thompson attended the schools of Randolph County and was employed by the U.S. Forest Service.

He served as a substitute mail carrier and transported people from Whitmer for groceries and medical appointments.

He loved children and enjoyed sitting on his front porch socializing with neighbors and friends. "Uncle Barney" will be best remembered by his nieces and nephews as doing farm chores and hunting and fishing with them.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Saturday, he will be moved to the Whitmer United Methodist Church for visitation from 11 a.m. until noon, the funeral hour. The Rev. Rick Jewell will officiate and interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery near Whitmer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitmer United Methodist Church, in care of Pam White, P.O. Dainer Channell

Donald Stackpole

Donald Edwin Stackpole, 67, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born July 23, 1941, at Cambria, a son of the late Lotus Ray and Vada Blye Cain Stackpole.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Oscar William and Howard Lee Stackpole.

He is survived by two daughters, Angela Vance of Belington and Brenda Mabry of Louisiana; four brothers, Curtis Stackpole of LaVerkin, Utah, Wayne, Ronald Edward and Larry Kent Stackpole, all of Buckhannon; three sisters, Wilma Cumbridge of Akron, Ohio, Barbara Ward of Anmoore and Darlene Moran of Buckhannon; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Stackpole was a coal miner and a Methodist by faith.

Mrs. Puffenbarger was born Oct. 18, 1915, at Arbovale, a daughter of the late William H. and Doshie Belle Ervin Arbogast.

Mrs. Puffenbarger was of the Methodist faith and was a retired seamstress.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Pershing Arbogast.

Surviving are two daughters, Faye Crews and husband, Curt, of Davenport, Fla., and Connie L. Coryer and husband, B.J.; one sister, Eloise Jane Puffenbarger of Cool Ridge; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at the funeral home with the Rev. David Rittenhouse officiating. Interment will follow in Arbovale Cemetery.

William Warren "Barney" Thompson, 84, a resident of Whitmer, passed away Tuesday evening, Nov. 18, 2008, in Mansfield Place at Philippi.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Saturday, he will be moved to the Whitmer United Methodist Church for visitation from 11 a.m. until noon, the funeral hour. The Rev. Bernard Kiernan

Bernard Patrick Kiernan, 94, a former resident of Elkins Avenue, Elkins and more recently, a resident of the Talbott Personal Care Home in Belington, departed this life early Friday evening, Nov. 21, 2008 at the nursing home.

Emory Cogar

Emory Cogar, 78, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, with his loving family by his side.

He was born Dec. 6, 1929, at Mill Creek, the son of the late Ashbury and Vida (Collins) Cogar.

He married Verna McCauley, his wife of 57 years, on Oct. 18, 1951. The special loves of his life were his wife, Verna, family and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, seven children, Lorraine Perrine and husband, Richard, of Port Norris, N.J., Elaine Cogar of Barnegat, N.J., James Cogar of Clayton, N.C., Emory Cogar Jr. and wife, Donna, of Clayton, N.C., Theresa Camden and husband, Gary, of Longs, S.C., Steven Cogar and wife, Christie, of Clayton, N.C., and Allen Cogar and wife, Kim, of Fairleeshills, Pa.; 30 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Cecil Cogar and wife, Linda; and sister, Marie Larry.

He was preceded by his parents, a daughter, Debbie Cogar in 1999; and several brothers and sisters.

Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in Maplewood Cemetery in Clayton, N.C.
