David S. Kines

David S. Kines, 70, a resident of Route 4, Union Road, Philippi, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 3, 1938, at Philippi, a son of the late Don and Opal (Booth) Kines.

He was united in marriage on June 28, 1957 to Rosa Lee (Fridley) Kines, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughter, Jennifer Kines and husband, Jesse Ratliff, of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Becky Kines of Philippi; two sons, Don W. Kines and wife, Sheryl, of Davis and Tom P. Kines and wife, Glenda, of Cross Lanes; three sister, Norma Jean Lowe of South Charleston, Mary Bolyard and husband, Bill, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Nancy Haney and husband, Jerry, of Philippi; one brother, James Kines and wife, Linda, of Philippi; and nine grandchildren, Amanda, Olivia, Emily, Rachel, Brittney, Lindsay, David, Samantha and Benjamin.

Mt. Kines was preceded in death by one infant brother, Michael Kines.

Mr. Kines retired in 1996 for the family business, Kines Motors Co. He was a lifetime farmer. Mr. Kines served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He was a member and past master of the Bigelow Lodge 52 AF & AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Valley of Charleston orient of West Virginia, had previously served on the board of directors at First National Bank and was an avid fisherman and camping enthusiast. He was an enthusiastic grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Philippi Baptist Church.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi today from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the service hour with the Rev. Dean Davidson officiating. Interment will follow in Mr. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with the Bigelow Lodge 52 conducting graveside rites and the American Legion Post 44 conducting military rites. Delmer L. Snyder

Delmer Leroy Snyder, 86, a former resident of Hendricks, and more recently a resident of Colonial Place at Elkins, departed this life early Saturday morning, Sept. 13, 2008, in Colonial Place.

He was born Sunday, May 7, 1922, in Mineral County, a son of the late Oley J. and Rachel Gertrude Collins Snyder.

On Sept. 5, 1943, at Baltimore, Md., he was married to the former Grace Louise McCrum, who preceded him in death Sept. 23, 2006. They had celebrated 63 years of marriage.

Surviving are two sons, Earnest Leroy Snyder and wife, Erma, of Hambleton, Denzil Ray "Denny" Snyder and wife, Aleta "Snoozie," of Fairmont; two daughters, Janet Louise Long of Parsons and Vera Virginia Hedrick and husband, John, of Hendricks; two brothers, Kelly L. Snyder and wife, Viola, and Donnie E. Snyder and wife, Mary, all of Hambleton; three sisters, Kathleen Stonesifer of Pa., Eileen Walton and husband, Harry, of Parsons and Viola Kyle of Ohio; six grandchildren, Cindy, Todd, Michael, Michelle, Tabitha and Melyssa; and seven great-grandchildren.

Proceeding him in death was one brother; Virgil Forrest Snyder.

He attended the schools of Tucker County. He quit school and joined the Civilian Conservation Corp to help support his family. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the attack of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He was a construction worker and worked for the railroad. He was a former employee of Kingsford Charcoal Co., and at the time of his retirement, he worked as a truck driver for the West Virginia Division of Highways. He later worked at the Parsons Nursery. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and he helped raise money for the Veterans Wall in Parsons. He attended the Parsons Church of God. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and very patriotic. He first fought for his family and later fought for his country.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Eli Hostetler will officiate and interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery at Thomas where the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign War will conduct full military rites. Dorothy Nottingham

Dorothy May Nottingham, 90, of Durbin, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, in Valentine Assisted Care Living Center at Beverly.

Born Feb. 13, 1981, in Hardy County, she was the daughter of the late David and Mary Martha Foy Wagner.

She was a retired seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Forest Nottingham; and two stepsons, Lewis and Glen Nottingham.

Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Donean Nottingham of Durbin; one sister, Lucy Pearl Herschman of Ohio; and one niece, Barbara Canfield of Ohio.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale with the Rev. David Rittenhouse officiating. Lori Lynn Hays, 51, of Petersburg, died Saturday, Sept.13, 2008, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Ollie K. Johnston

Ollie Kerlin Warner Johnston, 93, of Arbovale, went home to be with her Lord Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at the home of her daughter, surrounded with her family.

Ollie was born March 1, 1915, at Cherry Grove, a daughter of the late Charlie N. and Mary E. Wimer Warner.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Kerr Chapel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cletis Johnston in 1993; a sister, Mabel Sponaugle; brothers, Arlie Warner, Roy Warner and DeWitt Warner; and a great-grandson, Brian Vandevender.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Rexrode and husband, Jim, of Durbin; a son, Buford Johnston and wife, Patricia, of Arbovale; a sister, Priscilla Mullenax and husband, Brooks, of Cherry Grove; four brothers, Ray Warner and wife, Nola, of Riverton, Charlie Warner and wife, Betty, of Circleville, Merle "Buck" Warner and wife, Carolyn, of Seneca Rocks and Paul Warner and wife ,Pauline, of Cleveland, Ohio; and six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Durbin Church of the Brethren with the Rev. David Rittenhouse and the Rev. William C. Vandevender officiating. Robert A. Jordan

Robert Allen Jordan, 52, of Richwood, went home to be with family at 5:28 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 2008. Bobby passed away after a very brief and difficult battle with lung cancer at the residence of his sister-in-law in Webster Springs with family at his side.

He was born Nov. 23, 1955, the youngest son of Bertha Ann Parsons Jordan and the late James Leon Jordan.

Bobby was a 1973 graduate of Richwood High School. He was employed by Snowshoe Resort at Snowshoe for many years in several capacities. Bobby loved playing video games, cooking, fishing and hunting. He was Baptist by faith.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jackie Hebb; maternal grandparents, Wilma and Dempsey Parsons; paternal grandparents, Guy Jordan and Reba Collins; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Wanda and Orbie Nicholas; and brother-in-law, Robert Nicholas.

Bobby will be sadly missed by his wife of 16 years, Norma Nicholas Jordan of Richwood; daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie Ann and Gil Jacob of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; granddaughter, Isabella Jacob of Niagara Falls; mother, Ann Jordan, formerly of Richwood, now residing in Franklin; brother, Henry Jordan of Franklin; one nephew, Jeremiah Jordan of Elkton, Va.; three nieces, Heather Jordan of Harrisonburg, Va., Destiny and Jordan Hebb of Ohio; brother-in-law, Wayne Hebb of Ohio; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Stephanie Jo and Torie Perkins of Elkins; brothers-in-law, Steve Nicholas of Richwood and Johnny "Butch" Nicholas of Richwood; and sister-in-law, Gloria "Cookie" Nicholas-Brown of Webster Springs.

Bonnie L. Woodford

Bonnie Lou Woodford, 62, a resident of Mill Creek, went home to be with the Lord at 1:16 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, in the emergency department of Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 7, 1946, a daughter of the late Elmer Lloyd and Mary McCauley Lloyd.

She was married to Forrest "Tootles" Woodford, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by one son, Darden "Peck" Woodford and wife, Francine, of Mill Creek. Also surviving are two very special grandchildren, Darden "D.J." Woodford and his companion, Brooke Hannah, and Amanda Woodford and her companion, Eric Price, with whom she made her home; and a very special great-grandson, Zachary Brown Price. Also surviving are three brothers, Gerald, Billy and David Lloyd, all of Mill Creek; six sisters, Julie Corbin and husband, Gene, of Duluth, Ala., Helen Taylor and husband, Ronald, of Mill Creek, Gladys Currence and husband, Dave, of Valley Head, Hazel Wyatt and husband, Dale, of Beckley, Barbara Lambert and husband, David, of Beverly and Mary McDonald and companion, Vernon Channell, of Beckley.

Preceding her in death were three brothers, Mike Lloyd, and two infant brothers; and one infant sister, Betty.

Bonnie attended the schools of Randolph County and worked for more than 18 years for Snowshoe Mountain Resort, until her illness.

Bonnie Lou Woodford, 62, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away at 1:16 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, in the emergency department of the Davis Memorial Hospital.

Walter Piggott, Jr.

Mr. Walter "Frank" Piggott Jr., 85, a resident of Volga, passed away Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 after a tough fight against cancer.

Walter is survived by his wife of 67 years, Arjetta "Jet" Piggott; a son, Francis "Tom" and Arlene Piggott of Brimfield, Ohio; daughter, Dianne and Les Golec of Newnan, Ga.; daughter, Sharon and Joe Adcock of Alliance, Ohio; son, Jim Piggott and Michelle of Volga; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Bess (Canfield) Piggott; and a brother, William Piggott.

A memorial service will be Thursday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Boulder. The Rev. Randy Simms will officiate. Harold K. Everson

Harold Keith Everson, 39, of Route 2, Belington, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, as a result of a fire at his home.

He was born July 21, 1969, at Philippi, a son of Harold Franklin Everson, who survives at Junior along with his stepmother, Shelia, and the late Jo Ann Jones Everson.

Also surviving are his wife, the former Jennifer Lynn Hudkins of Belington; two daughters, Brittany Nichole Everson and Shannon Elaine Everson, both of Belington; four stepsons, Andrew Wolfe, Cole Wolfe, Shawn Wolfe and Brady Wolfe, all of Belington; two brothers, Kenneth "Bernie" Everson and wife, Jodie, of Belington and Haydon Poe of Junior; one sister, Stacy Lynn Everson of Philippi; one stepbrother, Jeff Poe and wife, Michelle, of Belington; one stepsister, Leslie England and husband, John, of Junior; and nephews, Michael Everson, Zack Little, Austin Everson and Hunter Everson.

He was the grandson of Bernard and Macel Everson, who survive at Belington, and Helen Jones, who survives at Philippi and the late Richard Jones.

Mr. Everson had been employed for the past 19 years as a coal sampler for Standard Laboratories and Coal Operators Analytical Laboratories. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Ty-Hannon Sportsman's Club.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. The Rev. F. L. "Wink" McQuain will officiate and interment will follow in the Everson Cemetery on Mouse Run Road. Martha Schadewald

Martha Jane Sell Schadewald, 56, a resident of Montrose, passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

She was born Aug. 20, 1952, at Mineral Wells, Texas, a daughter of Delbert Hobart Sell, who survives, and the late Lillie Jane Hebb Sell.

On Feb. 13, 1985 at Oakland, Md., she was married to Charles Austin Schadewald, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Shawn D. Cosner of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, April L. Johnston of Washington, D.C.; and one granddaughter, Angel L. Scott of Fairfax, Va.

Martha was a homemaker and a member of Sycamore Grove Church.

Stephen Oleksa Jr.

Stephen Oleksa Jr., 82, a well known electrical superintendant, most recently of Pleasant Hill Rd., Morgantown, and formerly of Elkins, passed away early Monday evening, Sept. 15, 2008, at his residence following an extended illness.

Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Monday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A vigil service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Veda J. Queen

Veda Johnieve Queen, 83, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, in New Hope Room and Board in Hodgesville, while under the care of St. Joseph's Hospice.

She was born May 13, 1925, at Gum Mountain, a daughter of the late John Raymond and Celia White Queen.

On July 3, 1943, she married Forrest Dale Queen, who preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1995.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Elaine Reppy; two brothers, Robert "Bob" and Earl Queen; and one sister, Madge Streets.

She is survived by one son, Bobby Dale Queen and wife, Alice, of Milford, Del.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ludie Queen of Buckhannon; special niece, Iris McLain of Buckhannon; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Pleasant View United Methodist Church at Hodgesville. She was an avid hunter and fisherwoman and was well known for her paintings and craftwork.

Helen L. Shreve

Helen L. Shreve, 77, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born Aug. 31, 1931, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late William C. and Zuma O. Grubb Mills.

On May 29, 1951, she married Robert M. Shreve, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Judy L. Metheney and husband, Robert, of Webster Springs and Debra Summerfield and husband, David, of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Terry Shreve and wife, Karen, of Grantsville; four grandsons, Adam Radabaugh of Buckhannon, Travis Radabaugh of Atlanta, Clinton Radabaugh and wife, Nicole, of Buckhannon and Brent Metheney and wife, Jody, of Buckhannon; two granddaughters, Kalyn Radabaugh of Buckhannon and Lora Lee Summerfield of Atlanta; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Catherine DeBarr and husband, Victor, of Buckhannon; and a niece, Beth Materne and husband, Kevin, of Buckhannon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Mills; and two brothers, Billy and Bobby Mills.

Mrs. Shreve was a loving mother and homemaker. She was a Baptist by faith.

Jean C. Nuckles

Jean C. Nuckles, 91, a resident of South Kerns Avenue, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

She was born July 12, 1917, at Saginaw, Mich., a daughter of the late Guy and Elfida Dame Crandall.

On July 20, 1965, she married Frank Preston Knuckles Jr., who preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1997.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Nuckles was a homemaker and a member of Grace Episcopal Church of Elkins.

Jean H. Miller

Jean Harsh Miller, 80, a resident of Rosendorf, departed this life Wednesday morning, Sept. 17, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins.

She was born Wednesday, March 28, 1928, at Clover Run, Tucker County, a daughter of the late Randall Harsh and Louessa Bonner Harsh.

On July 27, 1951, at Baltimore, Md., she was married to Ralph R. Miller, who survives. They celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Surviving are three sons, Donald C. Vest and wife, Arnetta, of Clover Run, Kevin Andrew Miller and wife, Cynthia, of Hacker Valley and Jeffrey Scott Miller and wife, Lisa, of Terra Alta; three daughters, Carol Nimmo of Hambleton, Diane Louise McDonald and husband, Robert, and Roberta Rae Miller, all of Lorain, Ohio, one sister, Helen Harsh Tedrow and husband, Al, of Parsons and 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1945. During 1950, she supported the war effort by working on aircraft for the Department of Defense at Baltimore, Md., where she first met Ralph. She worked in the billing department for the Tucker County Emergency Medical Service, and she was a homemaker. She was an active member of the Cookie Ladies. She won many ribbons at the Tucker County Fair for the baskets and soap that she enjoyed making, and she loved to quilt.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons. Martha Jane Sell Schadewald, 56, a resident of Montrose, passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

Scott Hovatter

Scott Hovatter, 93, a resident of St. George, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday evening, Sept. 17, 2008, at his home.

He was born Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1914, at Bull Run, near St. George, a son of the late Walter and Minnie Nestor Hovatter.

He was twice married. First to the former Mary Kalar, who survives at Parsons, and second during September of 1979 at Elkins he was married to the former Mabel Williams, who survives at St. George.

Surviving are one daughter; Linda Louise Hovatter Loughry of Parsons: three brothers, Orval "Jack" Hovatter of Parsons, Branson Gay Hovatter of Bull Run and Keith Hovatter of Rising Sun, Md.; three grandchildren, Kimberly Lynn Betler, Lisa Ann Loughry and Allen Hayes Loughry II; five great-grandchildren, Kayla Kyle, Samantha Betler, Stephanie Betler, Scotty Elwood and Justus Loughry; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Sara Betler; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding him in death were one son, Scotty Lynn Hovatter, who passed away on July 9, 1971; two brothers, Victor Hovatter and Ona Hovatter; and two sisters, Nell Cathell and Grace Spessert.

He attended the schools of Tucker County. He was the Tucker County Democratic Chairperson for many years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved the outdoors. He was also known by many in the local area for his singing and guitar playing in the Gospel 5 singing group during the 1970s. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps following the Great Depression. He later worked for the West Virginia Division of Highways as a road supervisor, numerous private road construction companies and later retired from the U.S, Forest Service in 1976.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Elton E. Kittle

Elton Ervin Kittle, 79, a resident of West Davis Street, Elkins, went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, Sept.18, 2008, at his home.

He was born Sunday, Aug. 4, 1929, at Elkins, a son of the late Ervin Kittle and Dolly Grace Cunningham Kittle.

He had never married.

Surviving are one sister, Vivian Kittle Shipp of Elkins; two nephews, Joseph Shipp of Elkins and Michael Shipp of Lancaster, Calif.; and one niece, Chyrl Lynn Thill McClain of Mt. Vernon, Ind.

Preceding him in death were three brothers, Shirley Kittle, Howard Kittle and Allen Kittle; and one sister, Elizabeth Kittle McClain.

Elton attended the White School and Elkins High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, retiring after 20 years of service as an aviation machinist. He received combat ribbons for the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was an air frame and power plant mechanic whose knowledge spanned the piston and jet engine eras. He was a patriot who flew the flag daily and was an avid West Virginia University Mountaineer fan. He was an animal lover and enjoyed daily relaxing country drives. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back and provided many faithful years of care to his convalescent mother before her passing.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins. On Sunday, Sept. 21, Mr. Kittle will be moved to the Harmony Worship Center, where final rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Pastor Larry Poling will officiate and interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, where full military rites will be conducted by the H.W. Grace (Mallow) Anderson, 83, of Seneca Rocks, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at her home.

Jean C. Nuckles

Jean C. Nuckles, 91, a resident of South Kerens Avenue, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

She was born July 12, 1917, at Saginaw, Mich., a daughter of the late Guy and Elfida Dame Crandall.

On July 20, 1965, she married Frank Preston Knuckles Jr., who preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1997.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Nuckles was a homemaker and a member of Grace Episcopal Church of Elkins.

Robert L. Johnson

Robert Lee Johnson, 63, a resident of Volga passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at his residence.

He was born May 31, 1945, in Dellslow, a son of the late Harry C and Alice O'Dell (Rush) Johnson. He was united in marriage Sept. 7, 1966, to Carolyn (Freeland) Johnson, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert Lee Johnson II and wife, Cindy, of Volga, and Michael Johnson of Volga; two sisters, Penny and Pamela Johnson, both of Buckhannon; five brothers, Charles and wife, Patty Johnson, of Florida, Paul David and wife, Arlene Johnson, of Newark, Ohio, Anthony Keith and wife, Brenda Johnson, of Louisville, Ky., John and wife, Carolyn Johnson, of Bretz, and Mark and wife, Lisa Johnson, of Morgantown; one aunt, Edna Clark of Mt. Morris, Pa.; 10 grandchildren, Haley, Cole, Joshua, Cody, Kia Streets, Ashley, Robert III, Harley Marie, Mikayla and Michael Johnson, who all live at home. Mr. Johnson is also survived by several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Johnson worked as a laborer in the Laborer's Union. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed camping, antique cars and loved spending time with his children. He was a Methodist by faith.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the service hour with the Rev. Randy Simms officiating.
