Blanch Barr, 77, of Petersburg, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Doug Ketterman.

Catherine Blackhurst Fauley, 87, of Golden Living Center, Morgantown, passed away Aug. 29, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Douglas W. Bonner

Douglas William Bonner, 56, a resident of Kohler Street, Parsons, departed this life early Tuesday morning, Sept. 2, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. Death was attributed to cancer.

Ernestine M. Phares

Ernestine McGee Phares, 84, a resident of Mountain View Drive, Elkins, passed away Aug. 29, 2008, in Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born May 30, 1924, a twin daughter of the late Anna and C. H. McGee.

On May 9, 1943, she was married to Edsel Phares, who preceded her in death Jan. 2, 1997.

She is survived by a son, Edsel Vaughn Phares of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Jane E. DiBuono of Mashpee, Mass.; three granddaughters, Vanessa and Michelle Phares and Jacqueline DiBuono; and two grandsons, James and Philip DiBuono. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Willard (Bernadine) Simmons and Mrs. Hershel (Dot) Broughton of the Glenmore Community, Mrs. Robert (Sue) Cooper of Beverly and Mrs. John (Nootie) Stark of Ravenswood, WV.

Preceding her in death were two sisters, her twin sister, Etheline (McGee) Jones and Ercell Rohrbough; and five brothers, Kenneth, Virgil, Arden, Neil and Keith McGee.

Mrs. Phares was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1942. She was a former resident of Williamstown where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Williamstown and a member of the United Methodist Women of the church. She was past president of the Williamstown Woman's Club and was the manager of The Betty Lee Shoppe of Marietta, Ohio for a number of years. Mrs. Phares and her husband moved back to Elkins in 1993. She became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins and a member of the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Wednesday, Sept. 3, she will be moved to the First United Methodist Church in Elkins where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Ellis E. William R. Short, Former Buckhannon Mayor William Short Dies at 83

William R. Short, 83, of Buckhannon, passed away on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, in Colonial Place in Elkins.

Bill was an influential and respected member of the Buckhannon community. He was a former Buckhannon mayor for eight years, served on Buckhannon City Council for 15 years, was past president of West Virginia Municipal League, was past chairman of the West Virginia Solid Waste Recovery Commission, served on the West Virginia Hospital Board for three years and served numerous years on the Buckhannon Water Board. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Upshur County until his junior year in high school when the family moved to Braxton County. He graduated from Gassaway High School in 1941. Bill graduated from West Virginia University in 1948 with a bachelor's degree in business administration where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and Phi Battar Kappa mock fraternity. His college was interrupted for three years during World War II when he enlisted with the 3001st 123rd Signal Corp of the U.S. Army in 1942 and served 16 months in New Guinea, and the Philippine Islands. He received the American Theater and Philippine Liberation ribbons and one Bronze Star and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a past president of the Buckhannon Lions Club, past president of the Buckhannon Country Club, past exalted ruler of the BPOE 1736, member of Franklin Lodge 7 AF & AM and Shriners, member of the First United Methodist Church and past president of Buckhannon Chamber of Commerce. In 1978, he was named Buckhannon Citizen of the Year.

Bill was born Dec. 8, 1923, a son of the late George and Merle DeBarr Short.

In 1949, he married Dorothy Dutton, and they established a home in Buckhannon where he owned and operated Short Cable and Supply Co. for 38 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Bartley Dutton Short and wife, Sharon, of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Carrie Logan Short of Buckhannon and her mother, Becky Sharp of Mingo; one stepgrandson, David L. Linger of Buckhannon; one stepgreat-grandson, Kody D. Linger of Buckhannon; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" Hornbeck VanKirk of Stewart, Fla.; two nephews, David D. Hornbeck and wife, Judy, of Manteo, N.C., and William R. Hornbeck and wife, Margaret, of Leesburg, Va.; one niece, Ann Hornbeck Taylor of Moss Beach, Calif.; and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his son, William Bradford Short.

In addition to being a loving husband and devoted father and family man, Bill was an avid skier and enjoyed golfing, dancing, boating, fishing, camping, hunting and other outdoor activities. He was committed to the welfare of Buckhannon and its' citizens; the Bill Short pavilion in the City Park is named in his honor.

Friends were received Monday at Poling-St Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Damon Rhodes and the Rev. Lucille E. Varner

Lucille Edna Varner, 89 a resident of Nella's Nursing Home, Elkins, passed away Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

Born Oct. 12, 1918, at Boyer, she was a daughter of the late James and Birdie Simmons Varner.

Odessa B. Kane

Odessa Barkley Kane, 84, of Cass, passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

Odessa was born on April 3, 1924 to the late Rufie and Claude Barkley at Green Bank.

She was married to John M. "Jack" Kane Jr. on March 19, 1945. He preceded her in death in December 1980.

She graduated from Green Bank High School in 1942 and worked for the government in Washington, D.C., for several years. Odessa was a homemaker and a partner with her husband in the Kane's Store and Coca Cola Plant of Marlinton. She was actively involved with her husband in his quest to have the state of West Virginia buy the logging railroad that is now the Cass Scenic Railroad.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen and son-in-law, Ted Arbogast, of DuBois, Pa.; son, John Michael "Mike" and daughter-in-law, Judy, of Green Bank; grandchildren, John Michael and wife, Melissa, of Green Bank, J.T. Arbogast of New York City, Kristy and husband, Matt Thea, of Harrisonburg, Va., and Jonathan Arbogast of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and one great-grandson, John Michael Kane V. She is also survived by one sister, Pauline Worstell of Akron, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Chloe Kane; sisters, Helene Raines and Hilma Sheets; and her brother, Vere Barkley.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the funeral home with the Rev. Shirley C. Martin

Shirley Clifford Martin, 97, a resident of the Holly Meadows Community, Parsons, departed this life early Monday morning, Sept. 1, 2008, at his home.

He was born Wednesday, Feb. 8, 1911, at Pifer Mt., St., George, a son of the late Asbury Martin and Sarah Fitzwater Martin.

During March of 1932, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Flossie Strawderman, who precedes him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Clifford Alan Martin and wife, Marijane, of Parsons and Gary Lee Martin and wife, Barbara, of Parkersburg; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; four stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law, Jane Wilson Martin of Parsons.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by one son, Bernard Roger Martin; six brothers, Walter C. Martin, Boyd Stanford Martin, Claudie Francis Martin, Thurman Brown Martin, Otha Ottis Martin and Howard "Dailey" Martin; and two sisters, Anna Belle Phillips and Velvy Myrtle Moore.

He attended the one room school at Pifer Mountain. He worked for the former Funkhouser Handle Factory of Parsons, the former Dorman Mills of Parsons for 27 years and he was a farmer. He was a member of the former Parsons Chapter 39 IOOF and a former member of the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church of Parsons for more than 60 years of which he was a former treasurer and member of the board of trustees, and he and his wife were former custodians of the church.

Clara M. Davis

Clara Mason Davis, 94, a lifelong resident of Harding, departed this life Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington.

She was born Tuesday, March 24, 1914, at Harding, a daughter of the late Arch C. Davis and Icie McVeigh Davis.

She had never married.

Surviving are her adopted daughter, Nancy Ramsey and husband, Frank, of Lady Lake, Fla.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death are five brothers and three sisters.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School and Davis & Elkins College. She was an educator, having taught school in Randolph County until her retirement in 1974. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Order of the Eastern Star and had been the oldest living member of her beloved Kynette United Methodist Church at Harding. Throughout her life, she was devoted to her family, friends, community and church. She held many offices in her church and volunteered for many organizations. She also helped to raise twin nieces, Jackie Ratliff and Jerry Baisi, both of whom are deceased. She also cared for her ailing father and sister until their deaths. With the help of longtime friend and neighbor, Sylvia Goodwin, along with Mountain Hospice, she was able to stay in her home until February 2008 when she was moved to the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, where she remained until her death. She was always concerned with those in need and was interested in the betterment of children her entire life. She was strong, kind, proud and loving and will be truly missed by those who loved her.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins. Final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Douglas W. Bonner

Douglas William Bonner, 56, a resident of Parsons, went home to be with the Lord early Tuesday morning, Sept. 2, 2008, at Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown with his family at his bedside following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Thursday, July 3, 1952, at Parsons, a son of the late Stanley William and Nettie Cole Bonner.

On Dec. 21, 1985, at Parsons, he was married to the former Linda J. Mooers, who survives.

Also surviving are one sister, Sandra Lambert and husband, James, of Hendricks; two brothers, Garry Eugene Bonner and wife, Jeannie, of Parsons, and David Cleon Bonner and wife, Cathy, of Hendricks; and several special nieces and nephews. His last days were made brighter by his great niece, Haile Mooers.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1971. He had worked for many years with the West Virginia Laborers Local. In 1985, he began working at Parsons Shop-n-Save, where he worked for 10 years before going to work at Performance Motors at Parsons. Eight years later, he joined the team at Tygart Valley Motors in Elkins.

This past November, he was delighted to rejoin the team at Perfomance Motors.

Doug enjoyed detailing cars as a job and as a hobby. He also had a very compassionate heart for the elderly and was a loving caregiver and friend to several in the area. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he had served as deacon, trustee and spent several years as the church janitor. He was also a member of the "Unseen Hand" puppet team at the church. He will be sadly missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

Elmo O. Adkins Jr.

Elmo O. "Moe" Adkins Jr., 83, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at his home.

Moe was born Oct. 7, 1924, at Follansbee, the son of the late Elsie M. Goodall and Elmo O. Adkins Sr.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Pearl M. and Robert Shingleton of Buckhannon; four nieces, Megan E. Shingleton of Buckhannon, Elaine Mravetz of Sharon Center, Ohio, Marlene Jackson of Bridgeport and Denise Deegan of Charleston; one nephew, Bruce Shingleton of York, Pa.,; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Moe was a graduate of Victory High School in 1942. He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving 30 years during World War II and the Korean War. His tour of duty during World War II included Hawaii, the Philippine Islands and Japan, and Korea during the Korean War. Moe was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663. After retiring from the military, he taught advanced electronics at Woodson High School in Fairfax, Va., for 17 years. Upon retirement from the Virginia education system, he resided with his mother in Buckhannon.

Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. J. Edward McDaniels will officiate. Pallbearers will be James Carrico, Joseph Carrico, Randall Carrico, Capt. Brian Zickefoose, Jared Jackson and Col. Sid Jackson. Entombment will follow in Floral Hill Memorial Gardens in Quiet Dell. Evelyn Henderson

Evelyn Day Henderson, 94, of Petersburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Grant County Nursing Home.

Ralph Williams

Ralph Williams, 82 of Bayard, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at his home.

Born Sept. 2, 1925, at Fairmont, he was the son of the late Adolph and Mary (Martin) Williams.

He was also preceded in death by his son Thomas Williams.

Mr. Williams worked as a lineman for the B&O Railroad for 18 years and for the past 30 years he worked for the Dobin Coal Co. of Bayard. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Williams; two sons Alexander Ralph Williams of Uniontown, Pa., and Russell Jonathan Williams of Baltimore, Md.; five daughters, Rose Mary Elizabeth Ruiz of Stafford, Va., Sharon Denise Kowalkoski of Bayard, Lisa Michelle Williams of Elkins, Belinda Lynn DeWitt of Keyser and Melinda Ann Smith of Mt. Storm; two sisters, Nellie O'Callaghan of Glen Burnie, Md., and Leatha Gee of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; several half brothers and sisters; eight stepchildren; 15 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

At. Mr. Williams request his body will be cremated. A gathering for family and friends to share remembrances will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Mt. Storm Fire Hall in Mt. Storm. David A. Ruby M. Nestor

Ruby Maxine Nestor, 86, relocated to heaven on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008. She had lived a full and wonderful life here on Earth, but was ready to join the Lord, her husband and multiple family members and friends who had already gone before her. Maxine had suffered many complications after a fall and hip fracture in April, but died very peacefully in her sleep with family surrounding her in the comfort of her own home.

Maxine was born on Dec. 27, 1921, at Nestorville, to Herbert J. and Dora T. (Nestor) Crites.

She attended Nestorville's one room school house and graduated from Philippi High School in 1941. She grew up knowing her future husband, Robert L. Nestor, and they married on Aug. 15. 1942, in Oakland, Md. They moved to Akron, Ohio, in 1956 and were avid golfers at many different courses but were especially fond of Sunny Hill Golf Course in the Akron area. Maxine held jobs for J.C. Penney, Montgomery Ward and Curtis Candy Co. before she returned to Nestorville with her husband in 1984.

Maxine was a member of the Philippi Chapter 41 Order of the Eastern Star, James Barbour Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and Tacy Homemakers. She loved to spend time reading and sang alto in the Nestorville United Methodist Church choir. She was a dedicated believer in Christ and passed that knowledge and love onto her daughter and the rest of the family. She loved cooking, canning and gardening and was an skilled seamstress, quilter and basket weaver. In addition, she was actively involved in shaping the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Nestor; her sisters, Sylvia Shaw, Neva Hershman and Wilma Lee Fry; her brother, Hubert Crites; and her parents.

She is survived by, her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ted Clay of the Nestorville Community; her granddaughter and husband, Shelby and Dennis Rogers of Uniontown, Ohio; her grandson and wife, Jason and Melissa Clay of Philippi; and four great-grandchildren, Benjamin Rogers, Wesley Clay, Simon Rogers and Heidi Rogers; as well as two sisters, Reba Hershman of Cambridge, Ohio, and Vonda Rae Funk of Philippi.

William E. Dilley

William Everett Dilley, 48, of Dunmore, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at his home.

William was a licensed land surveyor, the elected Pocahontas County land surveyor and was a member of Dunmore United Methodist Church. He was also a member of West Virginia Professional Land Surveyors, the Southern States Board, the West Virginia Farm Bureau, served on the board of directors of Pocahontas Producers and was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha.

He was born March 13, 1960, at Marlinton, the son of the late Everett Wilson and Norma Lee (Arbogast) Dilley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lella Ann (Dilley) Morris.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Kay (Ricottilli) Dilley; one daughter, Toni Giovanna Dilley of Dunmore; one son, Justin Michael Dilley of Dunmore and Morgantown; one sister, Connie Sue Cover and husband, Tom, of Lewisburg; brothers-in-law; Melvin J. Riccottilli and Andy Morris; nephews, Eric Scott Ricottilli and Matthew T. Cover and wife, Sarah; niece, Jennifer Lee Cover Butler and husband, Michael; grandniece, Jayden Cover; and grandnephew, Colton Cover.

Arrangements are being handled by VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the New Hope Church of the Brethren with the Rev. David Fuller officiating. Mary E. Mouser

Mary E. Mouser, 92, a former resident of Route 1, Philippi, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Mansfield Place where she had been a resident for the past three years.

She was born Feb. 9, 1916, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Cayton and Lovie Grace (Lantz) Bolyard.

She was united in marriage on Aug. 5, 1933 to Dorsey Mouser, who preceded her in death on March 20, 2004.

Surviving are one son, Kenneth and wife, Wanda Mouser, of Philippi; one granddaughter, Dianna and husband, Bryan Phillips, of Nestorville; one stepgranddaughter, Mary and husband, Jimmy Nice, of Moatsville; one stepgreat-grandson, Richard Phillips stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps in California; one stepgreat-great-grandson, Joshua Nice of Moatsville; one sister, Louise Upton of Oakland, Md.; and one sister-in-law, Elaine Bolyard of Philippi.

Mrs. Mouser was preceded in death by one sister, Beatrice Isner; and two brothers, Hubert and Clayton Bolyard.

Mrs. Mouser retired in 1979 with 22 years of service from Grafton Manufacturing Co., in Grafton as a seamstress. She attended the schools of Barbour County and was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. Mrs. Mouser loved gardening and quilt making.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi, today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 7, form 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the service hour with the Rev.William Smith officiating. Nancy J. Pharis

Mrs. Nancy Jane Ware Pharis, 67, a resident of Route 1, Belington, departed this life at 6:47 p.m. Wednesday Sept, 3, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following an extended illness.

She was born July 8, 1941, at Junior, a daughter of the late Chester E. Ware and Virginia Osborne Ware.

In January 1959, she was united in marriage to Harl Edward Pharis, who survives at their home in Belington.

Mrs. Pharis is survived by one son, Tom Pharis of Junior; one daughter, Judy Weese of Belington; two sisters Cora Mae Pharis of Belington and Judy K. Pharis of Belington; two half sisters, Mary Katherine Ware of Elkins and Linda Coberly of Elkins; one half brother, Robert Ware of Belington; and one half sister, Carol Varnor of Virginia. Grandchildren surviving are Tommy Pharis, Zachery David Pharis, Chelsea Meadows, Raymond Pharis, Austin Pharis and Matraca Pharis. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Anita Jane Pharis; three brothers, Charles William Ware, Virgil Joseph Ware and Junior Edward Ware; and one grandson, Christopher.

Mrs. Pharis attended the schools of Barbour County and was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking and flowers.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and on Saturday until 11 a.m., the funeral hour when final rites will then be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Doyle N. Rider officiating. Interment will follow in the Trinity Cemetery near Belington. The family ask that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Elkins Dialysis Center, 100 Main St., Elkins, W.Va. 26241. At the request of the deceased, the casket will remain closed. Sarah T. Conrad

Sarah Tabitha Hogan Conrad, 69, passed away Sept. 3, 2008.

Born at Monterville, she was the daughter of the late Parker and Annie Hogan.

She graduated from Morgantown Business College and worked at the Randolph County Clerk's Office. She was a member of the Daughter of the War of 1812 and attended Point Mountain Church.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Crawford Conrad.

She is survived by her brothers, Don (Betty) and William Hogan; and sister, Erma (Jerry) Pack. She was the loving aunt of Michele (Mike) Cerneck, Jason Hogan and Garrett Pack.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Hevener Cemetery in Monterville where the family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. The VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton is in charge of the arrangements.  From 5 Sep 2008.

Amanda K. Gould

Amanda K. Gould, 29, of Buckhannon, passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at her home.

She was born Sept. 21, 1978, in Morgantown, the daughter of David G. and Betty Lee Norman Gould of Buckhannon.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Alicia Kerns and husband, William, of Clarksburg and Beverly Whitlatch and husband, Jason, of Buckhannon; a brother Darrell G. Gould and wife, Angela, of Buckhannon; and Amanda's fiance, Alan R. Westfall of Buckhannon; three nephews and two nieces.

Amanda was a seamstress at Ashland Sales and Services and attended South Buckhannon Mission Church on Randolph Street.

Visitation will be Sunday, Sept.7, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held at the Funeral Chapel on Monday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ed Lowther and Rev. Randy Wagoner officiating. Burial will follow in the Upshur County Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made toward the funeral expenses. Jackson C. "Jack" Groves, 84, of Petersburg, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at the Grant County Nursing Home.
