Curtis Edward "Blue" McDowell, 63, a resident of River Street, Elkins, departed this life Thursday afternoon, July 10, 2008, at his home following a serious illness for several months.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, July 15, at 11 p.m. The Rev. Elizabeth Arbogast

Elizabeth Phares Arbogast, 80, a lifelong resident of Glady, and for the past several years a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, departed this life Saturday afternoon, July 12, 2008, in the nursing home following an extended illness. Death was attributed to Alzheimer's disease.

She was born Thursday, March 8, 1928, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Sherd Phares and Erma Smith Phares.

She was married to Jesse Minden Arbogast, who preceded her in death on April 22, 1982, after 48 years of marriage.

Surviving her are two sons, Jimmy M. Arbogast of Standardsville, Va., and Ricky D. Arbogast and wife, Rebecca, of Roanoke, Va.; four daughters, Beverly Elza Dowell of Dundalk, Md., Jane Elizabeth Carpenter and husband, Warren, of Elkins, Peggy Nash Thompson and husband, David, of Buckhannon and Sherry Beverage and husband, Bob, of Standardsville, Va.; five sisters, Julia Pinter, Mabel Bernstein, Nancy Jones and husband, Buster, Judy Chatham and husband, Bradford all of Maryland, and Gladys Marfield of Bowden; five grandchildren, Barbara Price of Salisbury, Md., Shawn Carpenter and wife, Thais, and Timothy Nash, all of Elkins, Staci Beverage and Jessica Hoffman and husband, Josh, all of Standardsville, Va.; and 10 great grandchildren, Lacie Elza, Mason Price, Sierra Dacre, Katrina Carpenter, Natasha Carpenter, Nicholas Carpenter, Brooke Nash, Malik Mallory, Ryan Hoffman and Emma Hoffman.

Preceding her in death were one son, Jerry Lee Arbogast; three brothers, Mage, Robert and Eddie; and two sisters, Lynette Sykes and Nellie Shifflett.

She attended the schools of Randolph County, was a homemaker and a member of the Glady Church of the Brethren. She was a very kind and loving person whose greatest joy was taking care of her family. She enjoyed cooking, making homemade bread, canning, being outdoors working in her vegetable and flower gardens and sewing. She was a devoted mother and friend, and she will be dearly missed by all.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, July 16, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Steve Shifflett will officiate and interment will follow in the Glady Cemetery. Herbert Pumphrey Sr.

Herbert Lee Pumphrey Sr. 86, of Ellamore, died Friday, July 11, 2008, in Louis A Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg, under the care of hospice.

He was born March 5, 1922, in Upshur County, a son of the late George Thomas and Hetty Lenora Harman Pumphrey.

On Aug. 1, 1944, he married Mary Cathleen Phillips, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Herbert Lee Pumphrey Jr. and wife, Bonnie, of Madison, Ohio, and Thomas Burton Pumphrey Sr. of Buckhannon; two daughters, Connie Talbott and husband, Leo, of Tallmansville and Linda Matthews and husband, David, of Winchester, Va.; 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold C. and Ray Marvin Pumphrey; and one sister, Nina Marie Edgell.

Mr. Pumphrey worked as a coal miner and in the timber industry. He also worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pickens and Montana. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 with the 78th Calvary Recon Troop, Lightning Division, in the European Theater during the Battle of the Bulge and was at the Remagen Bridge. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting, fishing and feeding the birds. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He had a loving family and will be missed by all.

Friends were received Sunday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home with the Rev. Ron Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Union Church Cemetery at Tallmansville. Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars 3663, Frank B. Isabelle S. Dumire

Isabelle Smith Dumire, 90 a resident of Limestone Mountain Road, St. George, and more recently a resident of Cassville, departed this life Friday, July 11, 2008, in the Maple Shire Nursing and Rehabilitation Home at Morgantown.

She was born Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1918, at St. George, a daughter of the late David Tazwell Smith and Iva Lipscomb Smith.

She was married to Freeman Keith Dumire, who preceded her in death June 15, 1983.

Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Willard and husband, George, of Cassville; four brothers, Larry Dean Smith of Barberton, Ohio, David Smith of Akron, Ohio, Ersel Howard Smith of Tacoma, Wash., and Dewey Smith of Clinton, Ohio; three sisters, Alice Jean Terry of Berry Creek, Calif., Joyce Simmons of Horseshoe Run and Doris Lee Cook of Baltimore, Md.; and six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were three brothers; Arlie and Stuart Smith and infant, Wilbur Dale Smith; and one sister, Leona Louise "Annie" Pifer.

She attended the Mount Hope one room school at Location. She was a homemaker and a dairy farmer at Limestone and a member of The Farm Women's Club. She was a member of the Limestone Methodist Church.

A graveside service will take place today at 1 p.m. in the Stemple Ridge Cemetery at Stemple Ridge. The Rev. Kevin Hostetler will officiate and interment will follow. Letha M. Woolwine

Letha Mae Woolwine, 60, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, in the Davis Memorial Hospital. She suffered from multiple sclerosis and had been in declining health.

Letha was a lifelong resident of Kerens until she became a patient at the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center in 1999.

Letha was born Sept. 1, 1947, at Elkins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louie and Zetha Murphy-Vandevender.

Surviving are her two brothers, William Vandevender of Pennsylvania, and David Vandevender of Kerens.

In 1965, she married Roy F. Woolwine Jr., and the couple had two daughters, Julie and Marie. Julie Blosser and her husband, Rick, reside in Kerens along with Letha's oldest grandson, Tyler Phillips , 17. Marie and her husband, Jason, reside in Sparland, Ill., along with Letha's grandchildren, Genevieve Grace, 5, and Samuel Isaac, 4.

Letha was a 1965 graduate of Elkins High School. She worked as a secretary at Farm Credit until becoming disabled. She attended the Hart's Chapel Church at Kerens and was a member of the Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star. Letha never met a stranger and was well known for her infectious smile and wonderful sense of humor.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., Tuesday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ken Shiflet officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman. Lois C. Westfall

Lois Crites Westfall, 92, of Route 3, Buckhannon, the Glady Fork community, and more recently of Holbrook Nursing Home, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008.

She was born Aug. 25, 1915, at the Glady Fork community, a daughter of the late Edgar Fay and Zona McCue Crites.

Also preceding her in death are one sister, Nelle Walker; and one brother, Garland Crites.

She is survived by her husband of 75 years, Carl D. Westfall; two daughters, Nancy Westfall of Buckhannon and Linda Winspear and husband, George, of Glady Fork; one niece, Helen Neely of Buckhannon; numerous relatives.

She was a homemaker and a lifetime member of the Rocky Ford United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15. Interment will follow in the Rocky Ford Cemetery. Martha A. Swann

Martha Alice Swann, 85, of Canaan Valley, passed away July 12, 2008, in Windy Hill Manor at Kingwood.

She was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Canaan Valley, the daughter of the late John R. Harper and Elizabeth Mauzy Harper.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Swann.

She is survived by son, Kenneth and Jerry Baldwin of Ravenna, Ohio; six grandchildren, two sisters, Mary Dysle of Canton, Ohio, and Alta Jenkins of Akron, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Frances Harper of Naples, Fla.; four nieces, Donna Duley of Independence, Patti Homes of Naples, Fla., Kitta Michaels of Gadsden, Ala., and Beverly Kuster of Massillon, Ohio; and five nephews, Richard Lantz of Oakland, Md., Ronald Lantz of Ridgley, Harold Harper of Gadsden, Ala., David Harper of Willoughby, Ohio, and Mark Jenkins of Akron, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Allen Harper; six brothers, Glenn, William, Saul, Calvin, John and Burl Harper; and three sisters, Grace Shipman, Viola Lantz and Lillian Harper.

Edward McCauley

Edward "Ed" William McCauley, beloved husband, 63, a resident of Route 1 Teter Lake Community, Montrose, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 14, 2008.

He was born Feb. 1, 1945, in Philippi, a son of the late Waitman and Viola Grace (Keene) McCauley.

He was united in marriage Jan. 23, 1965, to Shirley Ann (Gouer) McCauley who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert Edward and wife, Amanda Reigh (Simmons) McCauley, of Clarksburg and Stephen Scott and wife, Edna "Sunny" (Lander) McCauley of Bloomington-Normal, Ill.; one brother, Gaston and wife, Belva McCauley, of Canton, Ohio; and six grandchildren, krystal Blanchard, Jeremiah McCauley, Chelsey and Chanda Hosey, and Stephen Michael and Victoria Elizabeth McCauley.

Mr. McCauley was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Boylen and Virginia Ward; three brothers, Denzil "Love," Everett and Truman McCauley; one stepsister, Geneva Zirkle; and three stepbrothers, Jerl, Burl and Monzell McCauley.

Mr. McCauley served as a city police officer in Tampa, Fla., and for the city of Philippi. He also worked in the coal fields, was a correctional officer at Pruntytown Correction Center and was a grounds man at the Bel-Meadow Golf Course.

Mr. McCauley served in the U.S. Army during 1963-1966. He was a member of the honor guard of Pruntytown Correctional Officers and the riot squad for the Tampa City Police. He served as a defensive tactics instructor and was an instructor at the correctional academy at Wheeling Jesuit College. He also served on the Strike Command at the McDill Air Force Base.

Mr. McCauley was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed golfing, fast and slow pitch softball, raquetball and handball. He spent countless hours spoiling his grandchildren and he attended the Silent Grove Church.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, on Thursday, July 17, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday, July 18, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the service hour, with Pastor Bryan Headley and Speaker James "Sonny" Griffith officiating. Cecil R. Lynch

Cecil Ray Lynch, 54, of Elkins, formerly of Webster Springs, Braxton County and Oak Hill, died suddenly at his residence July 10, 2008.

He was born June 11, 1954, at Sutton, a son of the late Clarence and Helen O'Dell Lynch.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two nephews, "Dano" and "Jay" Lynch.

Ray began at 16 driving ambulance for Webster Ambulance Service, later becoming an EMT and paramedic. Ray, in his career as a paramedic, worked at Braxton County Memorial Hospital and Ambulance Service, Kanawha County Ambulance Authority, Quinwood Ambulance Service, Jan Care and Health Net. Ray was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Webster Springs. Ray was a former member of Webster Springs Fire Department.

Surviving are his sons, Nathaniel Lynch of Heaters, Jeffrey Kessler of South Charleston and Anthony Carson of Charleston; daughter, Courtney Moore of Jacksonville, N.C.; sister, Ruth Ann Hamrick of Webster Springs; brothers, Danny, Dana and Frank Lynch of Webster Springs, Jack Lynch of Summersville and Ricky Lynch of Elkins; and two nieces and three nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs with the Rev. Nelson Harris conducting a celebration of Ray's life at 7 p.m. Ray's wish was to be cremated and his cremains placed at his camp in his native Webster County near Hacker Valley.  From 17 Jul 2008.

Leola H. Arnold

Leola Helen Arnold, 93, of Woodstock, Va., died Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in Greenfield Assisted Living in Woodstock.

She was born May 10, 1915, at Hodgesville, a daughter of the late Cecil and Mabel Chapman Lance.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Junior L. Arnold, who died April 8, 1980; one brother, Eugene Lance; and one sister, Venita Lance Compton.

Mrs. Arnold is survived by one son, Donald W. Tenney and wife, Doreen, of Front Royal, Va.; one grandson, Brian Tenney and wife, Wendy, of Augusta; and five great-grandchildren, Will-Henry, Denver, Trinity, Shay and Selah Tenney, all of Augusta.

Ruth V. Coontz

Ruth V. Coontz, 82, a resident of Wishing Well Manor, formerly of Gilbob St., Fairmont, died Tuesday afternoon in the health facility.

She was born March 10, 1926, at Belington, daughter of the late Sherman and Alene Arbogast Hymes.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, George Lonnie Coontz Jr., George Groves and Frederick Shaffer.

Mrs. Coontz was a Methodist by faith. She retired from Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. with 30 years of service. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was an avid golfer, having an achievement of three holes-in-one. She also enjoyed bowling and square dancing. She departed this life only to remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Vickie and Carl Crandall of Kingmont Community; a son and his wife, Lon and Elaine Coontz of Houston, Pa.; two stepdaughters and their spouses, Ann and Warren Moore of Charleston and Susan and Jerry Lewis of Grass Valley, Calif.; a stepson and his wife-,Ken and Phillis Groves of Ireland; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Lisa Darden of Barrackville, Lonnie and Jewels Coontz of Houston, Pa., Denise Crandall of Fairmont, Mike and Cindy Crandall of Fairmont, Ali,Cameron and Zack Lewis of Grass Valley, Calif., Jack Moore and Julie Moore of Charleston, Kenny and Susan Groves of St. Albans, and Bert and Michelle Groves of Bunker Hill; a brother and his wife, Matthew and Nadine hymes of Ohio; three sisters and their spouses, Mary and Troy Sponaugle of Symera, Del., Margaret Baker and Wanda Harris both of Belington; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Short, Ron, Forrest and Buck Hymes; and three sisters, Josephine Hymes, June Coontz and Bessie Right.

Mrs. Ann Snouffer, 75, of Franklin, and formerly of Upper Tract, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

Ethelean M. Bennett

Ethelean N. Bennett, 95, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in Serenity Care Home in Buckhannon.

She was born Dec. 10, 1912, at Adrian, a daughter of the late Charles and Hattie Dell Thompson Smith.

On July 9, 1932, she married Roy S. Bennett, who preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 1994.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Timothy Smith; one brother, Willard Smith; and four sisters, Madelean Phillips, Paulean Rowan, Bethelean Stonebreaker and Eilean Wealch.

She is survived by one son, Roy J. Bennett and wife, Joy J., of Buckhannon; one daughter, Eva Lee Smith and husband, Dennis, of Weston; four granddaughters, Pauletta Courtney of Clarksburg, Susan Miller and husband, Barry, of Buckhannon, Cathy Bennett and husband, Steve Goff, of Buckhannon and Robin Lewis and husband, Lenny of Romney; four grandsons, Bruce Bennett and wife, Jackie, of Buckhannon, Cort Bennett and wife, June, of Raleigh, N.C., Adam Bennett and wife, Debbie, of McKinney, Texas, and Tate Bennett and wife, Gia, of Madisonville, Ky.; three sisters, Emilean Quick of Buckhannon, Roselean Humphrey of Philippi and Mabelean Osburn of Stonewood; a granddaughter-in-law, Cathy Smith of Clarksburg; 18 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bennett was a homemaker, a member of the Church of God in Buckhannon, the Floral Rebekah Lodge 183 and AARP. She was a dedicated member of her church, spending many hours in it's various activities. She loved her family.

Herbert A. Price

Herbert Arnold "Red" Price, 83, of Route 2, Belington, died Thursday afternoon, July 17, 2008, in the Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center, Clarksburg, following a brief illness.

He was born July 30, 1924, near Belington, a son of the late Stewart Bowman and Pearl Evelyn (Jones) Price.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia and husband, William Jr. Stutler, of Bridgeport and Vickie Bennett of Belington; eight grandchildren, Lisa LeFever, Jennifer Scheuvront, Traci Zimmerman, Steven Henry, William Stutler III, Kristi Barnard, Patricia Cayton and Kelly Ables; 15 great-grandchildren, Derrick Joseph Henry, Steven Andrew Henry, Rachel Elizabeth Henry, Joshua Michael Henry, Jacob Daniel Henry, Natalie Breann LeFever, Brent Taylor LeFever, Zachary Allen LeFever, Samantha Marie Jones, Emilie Paige Scheuvront, Anthoni Guy Boyles, Kylee Sue Barnard, Azlee Mae Barnard, Gibson Lee Barnard III and William Rylee Barnard; and one great-great-grandson, Levi Thomas Barnes.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Clifton Price, William "Bill" Price, Harold Price and Raymond Price; and by his former wife, Betty Jean (Hill) Price.

Mr. Price was a retired meat cutter and was a former employee of the Pure Food Stores in Bridgeport and Belington. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy and was a life member of Laurel Mountain Post 410, Veterans of Foreign Wars at Belington. He was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Belington.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. Pastor David Shelton and Pastor Steven Henry will officiate and interment will follow in the Valley Bend Cemetery where Barbour County Post 44, American Legion, will confer military rites.

Jeffrey L. Taylor

Jeffrey Lynn Taylor, 42, a resident of Elkins, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 6, 1966, at Elkins, a son of Felson and Josephine Shifflett Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa Bailey Taylor of Elkins; four daughters, Joni Taylor of Montrose, Amanda Taylor of Coalton, Kayla Taylor at home and stepdaughter, Lauren Poling at home; and two sons, Jeffrey and Jordan Taylor of Elkins. Also surviving are three sisters, Dottie Parrack of Mill Creek, Betty Wood of Staunton and Patty Arbogast of Beverly; five brothers, James Taylor of Huttonsville, David Taylor of Mill Creek, Randy Taylor of Mill Creek, Phil Taylor of Huttonsville and Steve Taylor of Huttonsville; and one grandchild, Summer Ann Bradley.

Preceding him in death were one sister, Rhonda Taylor; and one brother, Charles Taylor.

Jeffery was employed by Texas FOP Fundraising in Elkins. He was a Protestant by faith.

V. "Ruth" Jones

V. "Ruth" Simmons Jones, 86, a resident of Coalton, departed this life late Wednesday evening, July 16, 2008, at her home.

She was born Thursday, Sept. 22, 1921, at Beverly, a daughter of the late John Simmons and Mozella Griffith Simmons.

On Aug. 8, 1938, at Huttonsville, she was married to Bernard Allen Jones, who preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1981.

Surviving are three sons, Jack Jones and Bradley K. Jones, both of Coalton and John A. Jones of Scott Depot; three daughters, Joyce Ann Bosserman of Mabie, Betty Jo Jones and Virginia Lee Jones, both of Coalton; one sister; a special grandson, Allen Jennings of Coalton; her "special nurse," her granddaughter, Emily Jones of Clarksburg; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and her constant companion and best friend, her dog, Pugsley.

Preceding her in death were her oldest son, Cpt. Bernard F. Jones, who passed away in Vietnam on Oct. 16, 1967; four sisters; and two brothers.

She attended the schools of Beverly, was a homemaker, was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion Auxiliary, the Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and was a member of the Pilson Memorial Presbyterian Church at Coalton. She was a member of the Gold Star Mother's and enjoyed bingo and quilting.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Saturday, July 19, at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Lorine C. Rader

Lorine Catherine Gill Wilson Rader, 85, a resident of Beverly, passed away Friday morning, July 18, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 18, 1923, at White Sulfur Springs, a daughter of the late Andrew "Andy" Gill and the late Minnie Victoria Wykle Gill.

She was twice married. On May 24, 1939, at Covington, Va., she was married to Burley Orley Wilson, who preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1966. On Dec. 3, 1969, she was married to Stephen Nyle Rader, who preceded her in death on May 26, 1994.

Surviving are four sons, Cecil Lee Wilson and wife, Dessie, of Beverly, Leon Clarence Wilson and wife, Pamela, of Dailey, Richard Lee Wilson and wife, Patricia, and Stephen Wayne Wilson and wife, Donna, all of Elkins; four daughters, Evelena May Taylor and husband, David "Butch" Taylor, of Valley Bend, Ruby Lee Channell and husband, Roger L. Channell, of Elkins, Loretta Jane Martin and husband, Ercil Martin, of Dailey and Maxine Victoria Metz and husband, Kenneth, of Porterwood; one stepson, Clyde Rader and a stepdaughter, Janet Arbogast and husband, Allan, all of Elkins; one brother, Albert Gill of Easley, S.C.; two sisters, Pauline Furby of Easley, S.C., and Wanda Ryder of Deerfield, Mass.; and 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were one son, Eastel Earl Wilson; two stepchildren, Justin Rader and James Rader; three brothers, Wallace, Carl and Claude Gill; and one sister, Marie Ramsey.

Mrs. Rader was a homemaker and attended the Revival Center at Dailey.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 20, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Charles Herron and the Rev. Harold Swecker officiating. Interment will follow in Mingo Cemetery at Mingo.
