Barbara Freeland

Barbara Freeland of Thomas passed away on June 20, 2008,

She was the beloved mother of Jeffrey Rippin of Mentor, Ohio, and Michele Goss of Thomas. She loved and was loved by her grandson, Jeffrey Rippin.

She was born Barbara McGovern, at Painesville, Ohio, on Oct. 16, 1934, to Frank Edward and Emma Jane McGovern of Madison, Ohio.

She is survived by her sisters, Lillian Brown, Margaret (Rob) Davidson, Mary Ann (Donald) Bliss and Irene McGovern, all of Ohio.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Gertrude Patrickquin, Rose Silvis; and her brother, Frank “Sonny” McGovern.

Barbara will be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews and by the close friends who were a part of her family.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis. The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate. Family will receive friends and family at the home of Michele Goss in Thomas following the service. There will be a separate graveside service in Madison, Ohio, on a date to be announced. Hazel L. Cool

Hazel L. Cool, 74, of Diana, died June 20, 2008, in Webster County Memorial Hospital at Webster Springs after an extended illness.

She was born April 19, 1934, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Earnest Long and Iva Myrtle Long.

She is survived by three sons, Mike Hines of Diana, Danny Hines of Mill Creek and James McCutcheon of Buckhannon; four daughters, Berneta Gum of Jumbo, Lisa Pritt of Virginia, Lenora Cool of Diana and Jennifer Gum of Jumbo; one brother, Frank Long of Mill Creek; and five stepgrandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Delmas Cool; one daughter, Sherlene Cool; and two brothers and three sisters.

She was a homemaker and attended the Union Mission Church.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at the funeral home with the Rev. Hazel R. Phillips

Hazel Ruth Shaffer Phillips, 88, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Sunday, June 22, 2008, at 3:50 a.m. in Colonial Place in Elkins.

She was born Oct. 18, 1919, in the little community of Pheasant Run in Tucker County. She was the daughter of the late Lloyd W. Shaffer and the late Annie Susan Nestor.

On Dec. 2, 1939, at Red House, Md., she was married to the late James Erwin Phillips, with whom she celebrated 49 and O years of marriage.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church on Spruce Street in Parsons since the 1950s. She enjoyed outdoor sports such as hunting and fishing. She also loved working in her vegetable garden and lawn. She was one of the founders of the C.C.C., along with Kathryn Little and Grace Gainer, known as the concerned citizens. The group organized after the floods in January and May of 1996. While with the Concerned Citizens, Hazel and her fellow members were instrumental in erecting a Veteran’s Memorial at the corner of Main and First streets in Parsons. They were also able to secure a commitment from the state to reconstruct Lover’s Lane in Parsons. In addition, they installed gates at the Parson’s cemetery and were able to clean up Pritt Island and the end of Mill Street. At the conclusion of her work with the C.C.C., Dewey Wilfong renamed the group “The Cookie Ladies.” Hazel was also the youth leader for many years at her church where she touched many lives.

Hazel is survived by her sister, Grace Gainer of Parsons; brothers, Guy Shaffer of Dover, Ohio, and Roy Shaffer of Bolivar, Ohio. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Mearl Johnson and Collen Parks; and brothers, Ray Lee Shaffer, Marvin Shaffer, Claude W. Shaffer and Howard Shaffer.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Parsons where a funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 25, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Madie B. Hornbeck

Madie B. Hornbeck, 84, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at her home.

She was born July 13, 1923, at Tallmansville, a daughter of the late Lee and Nora Reed Glass.

She is survived by her husband, Marple C. Hornbeck of Buckhannon; two daughters, Phyllis D. Coyner of Buckhannon and Sue Garman and husband, Ron, of Alta Loma, Calif.; two granddaughters, Ammie Garman of Rim Forest, Calif., and Megan Kimble and husband, J.B., of Buckhannon; one great-granddaughter, Jansen Kimble of Buckhannon; and one sister, Ocie Schulthies of Jessup, Md.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Glen Glass and wife, Edith, Richard Glass and wife, Margaret, and Ennis Glass; and two sisters, Sadie Wentz and husband, John, and Lottie Glass.

She was a homemaker and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Nicoletta Scattaregia

Nicoletta G. Scattaregia, 91, of Weston, formerly of Pittsburgh, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008, in United Hospital Center of Clarksburg following an extended illness.

She was born July 30, 1916, at Bridgeville, Pa., a daughter of the late Domenic Brancati and Maria (Speranza) Brancati.

On Nov. 5, 1945, she married Frank A. Scattaregia of Carnegie, Pa., who preceded her in death on May 17, 1957.

Mrs. Scattaregia is survived by two sons, Dr. Frank A Scattaregia of Buckhannon and Paschal P. Scattaregia of Everett, Wash.; four grandchildren, Matthew, Jonathan, Courtney and Jason Scattaregia; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose Yurchey, Frances Backowski and Mary Brancati.

Mrs. Scattaregia was a beautician, managed a restaurant and lounge and was a song writer. For most of her life, she attended St. Bernard Catholic Church of Mt. Lebanon. In later years, she attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Buckhannon and St. Patrick Catholic Church of Weston.

Family and friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home, 730 N. Main Ave. in Weston. A prayer service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today by Father Jeremiah McSweeney and Father Ron Nikodem, S.M. in the funeral home chapel.

Alfreda T. Salisbury

Alfreda Taylor “Tissy” Salisbury, 70, a resident of Route 1, Chenoweth Creek Road, Elkins, departed this life Friday afternoon, June 20, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Thursday, July 1, 1937, at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Noval Lee Taylor and Stella Wiseman Taylor.

Surviving her is her long time companion, George Washington Snyder; two daughters, Lisa Marie Pritt and husband, Terry, of Chenoweth Creek and Mary Evelyn Posey of Elkins; two brothers, Charlie Taylor and John Taylor, both of Mill Creek; two sisters, Carrie Taylor of Cravensdale and Oria Gear of Mill Creek; six grandchildren, Christopher Lee Taylor and girlfriend, Mary Beth Fortney, Crystal Michelle Overbaugh and husband, Larry, April Dawn Dilley and husband, Michael, all of Mill Creek, Billy Joe Taylor and wife, Danielle, of Fairmont, Terry Allen Pritt of Cravensdale and Marshall Lee Pritt of Belington; five great-grandchildren, Shasta Alai and Chianna Raine Overbaugh, Ivy Kay and Kristina Nicole Dilley and Kaitlyn Elizabeth Taylor; one special sister-in-law, Hazel Taylor; one special niece, Audrey Taylor; one special great-niece, Johnna Paugh; one special great-great-nephew, Michael Snyder.

Preceding her in death were four brothers, Dave, Carl, Otto and Stanley Taylor; and one sister, Valley Kittle.

“Tissy” attended the schools of Randolph County, was a homemaker, attended the Revival Center at Dailey and was a Pentecostal by faith.

Gary L. Taylor

Gary L. Taylor II, 37, of Bridgewater, Va., died early Friday morning, June 20, 2008, at his home. Death was unexpected.

Mr. Taylor was born Oct. 24, 1970, at Elkins, a son of Gary L. Taylor and Nancy G. (Simmons) Taylor, who survive in Mill Creek and Beverly.

On Oct. 20, 2007, he married Donna Long of Bridgewater, Va.

Also surviving are three sisters, Angela Howard, Tamela Taylor, both of Pennsylvania, and Shelly Taylor of Mill Creek; and two brothers, Brian Taylor and Bradley Taylor of Mill Creek. Also surviving are one stepson, Zachary; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Lawson and Opal Taylor and Olin and Emma Simmons.

At the request of the deceased, the remains were cremated. Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Grace Ministries in Valley Head with Pastor Todd Corley officiating.  From 24 Jun 2008.

Leslie P. Triplett

Leslie Perry Triplett, 68, a resident of Route 1, Moatsville, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born December 31, 1939, in Randolph County, a son of the late Donald Sr. and Mazie (Elza) Triplett.

He was united in marriage on Feb. 6, 1959 to Linda (Marsh) Triplett, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Carla and husband, Matt Knotts, of Philippi, Cindy and husband, Tom “Pork Chop” Yocum, of Belington and Angie and husband, Ron Everson, of Moatsville; three sons, Steve Triplett and wife, Linda, of Keyser, Randall Triplett of Philippi and Tim Triplett and companion, Amanda, of Nestorville; three sisters, Rosetta and husband, Karl Nestor, of Wooster, Ohio, Georgie and husband, Ron Skidmore, of Kasson and Donna Staten of Elkins; four brothers, Richard and wife, Donna Triplett, of Virginia, Mike and wife, Sandy Triplett, of Parsons, Frank and wife, Vickie Triplett, of California, and Howard and wife, Shaina Triplett, of Kasson; and 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Triplett was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Donald Triplett; and one grandchild, Anthony Triplett.

Mr. Triplett worked as a salesperson for Parts Associates. Mr. Triplett was an avid gardener and helped with Animal Friends of Barbour County.

Ralph W. Helmick

Ralph Wayne Helmick, 47, a resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of Proctor, departed this life Friday, June 20, 2008, at his home. He had been in declining health, however death was unexpected.

He was born Thursday, June 15, 1961, at Parsons, a son of the late Raymond James Helmick and Eva Mae Nelson Helmick, who survives at Thomas.

On April 4, 1987, at Parsons, he was married to the former Carol Dianne Parsons, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Wayne Ernest Helmick and Wendy of West Virginia, and Joshua Wayne Helmick of Proctor and three brothers, Jackson L. Helmick and AnnaLee of Parsons, James R. Helmick and Stacey of New Martinsville and Keith S. Helmick and Teresa of Hambleton; two stepbrothers, Homer F. Parsons and Linda of Jane Lew and Russell Parsons of Parsons; two stepsisters, Wanda Trader and Fred of Parsons and Crystal Bolyard and “Bub” of Grafton and one grandson, Bailey Wayne Helmick.

Preceding him in death are one brother; Junior Dale Helmick; and his stepfather, Homer M. Parsons.

He was a graduate of Tucker County High School with the class of 1980. He worked for the former Parsons Footwear, Ricottilli Lumber Co. and Performance Motor Co. He was an avid outdoorsman and golfer.

Sabin Pennington

Sabin McNeil Pennington, 44, a resident of Elkins, departed this life late Saturday evening, June 21, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

He was born Thursday, Jan. 9, 1964, in Tucker County, a son of the late Charlotte Belle Lawrence Pennington and Otto M. Pennington, who survives at Elkins.

Also surviving are one son; four brothers, Dennis Pennington and wife, Sandra, of Winchester, Va., Darrell Pennington and wife, Janet, and Scottie Pennington and wife, Michelle, all of Elkins, and the Rev. Eric Pennington and wife, Camie, of Blacksburg, Va.; one sister, Sheila Lloyd and husband, Bill, of Elkins; two aunts, two uncles, and several nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by one brother, Kevin Wade Pennington; and one sister-in-law, Cathy Pennington.

He attended the schools of Tucker County and worked construction for various companies. During his childhood years, he attended the Hambleton Pentecostal Church of God.

Esta Howdershelt

Esta Mae Richman Howdershelt, 79, of Route 1, Moatsville, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 1, 1928, in Tucker County, a daughter of the late Chester Franklin and Elnora (Auvil) Poling.

On Dec. 18, 1948, she was married to the Rev. Ogden Dawes Richman, who preceded her in death on June 15, 1982.

On Oct. 12, 1990, she was married to Vernon B. Howdershelt, who preceded her in death on June 20, 2008.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathie Richman Nogosky and husband, William, of Clover, S.C.; two sons, William "Larry" Richman and wife, Ramona, of Arthurdale and Lonnie Joe Richman and Susan Sloban of St. Joseph, Mich.; three stepchildren, Gloria McLean and husband, Rick, of Philippi, V. Eric Howdershelt and wife, Charlotte, of Morgantown, Melvin Howdershelt and wife, Renee, of Moatsville; sisters, Leota O'Neal of Moatsville, Pauline Price, Rosalie Marsh, Patsy Bolyard, Joan Bolyard and Faye Haddix, all of Philippi; brothers, James F. Poling of Philippi, and Kenneth C. Poling of St. Marys; grandchildren, Larry Matthew (Melissa) Richman, Mark Anthony (Jennifer) Richman, Michael Lee (Melodie) Richman and Olivia J. Richman; great-grandchildren, Madeline Grace Richman and Isaac Michael Richman; stepgrandchildren, Adam McLean, Anastasia McLean, Sarah Howdershelt, Micah Michael, Joe Michael, Bradley Howdershelt, Seth Howdershelt and Zachary Howdershelt; and a stepgreat-grandchild, Alanna Howdershelt.

She was also preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Melodie Grace Howdershelt.

Mrs. Howdershelt was a homemaker and farm wife. She attended the Nestorville United Methodist Church where she was active in the church choir. She loved to sing and was a member of the Nestorville Guys and Gals and the Richman Family Quartet. She enjoyed gardening and was a gifted seamstress. Mrs. Howdershelt currently served as vice president of the Gideons Auxiliary.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday from the Central Chapel United Methodist Church. Pastor Dot Stewart and the Rev. James Johnson will officiate and interment will follow in the Central Chapel Cemetery.

Friends may call at Stemple & Forman Funeral Home from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. today, while the family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 4p.m. and from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friends may continue to call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until noon and at the Central Chapel United Methodist Church from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, on Friday. Merritt Wilson

Merritt Wilson III, a resident of Pittsburgh, Pa., died Saturday, June 7, 2008.

A remembrance will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the family home at 109 High St., Elkins.

He was born Dec. 18, 1937, at Elkins, the son of Merritt Wilson Jr. and Caroline Brady Wilson, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by one sister, Grace Sundelin of Elkins; and a nephew, Andrew Sundelin and wife, Jennifer Grotpeter, of Denver, Colo. From 26 Jun 2008.

Michael J. Phares

Michael James Phares, 35, a resident of Gum Road, Elkins, departed this life early Friday morning, June 13, 2008, at his home following a sudden illness.

He was born Friday, Jan. 5, 1973, at Elkins, a son of Donald Paul Phares and Camille Ann Marstiller Phares.

Also surviving are one sister, Missy Marple and husband, Jim, of Parsons; paternal grandmother, Pauline Phares of Elkins; one aunt, Judy Jones and husband, Bill, of Lewisburg; a multitude of friends of all ages; and his two best friends, his dogs, Marley and Stella.

Preceding him in death were his paternal grandfather, Paul Phares; and maternal grandparents, Calmer "Cam" Marstiller and Mildred "Betsy" Marstiller.

Mike attended the schools of Randolph County and was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1991. He participated in sports and excelled in baseball as both a pitcher and a batter. Mike earned several awards which included All NCAC First Team and Second Team All State Class AAA in 1990 during which season Elkins High School was state runner-up in Class AAA. In 1991, he was again named to the All NCAC First Team, was selected as NCAC Player of the Year, was named to the First Team All State Class AAA and played in the North-South All Star Game. In 2006, Mike was inducted into the Randolph County Athletic Hall of Fame. Mike attended Davis & Elkins College, where he was an active member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He worked for several local businesses, and in recent years, had worked at Digital Soup. He had a strong interest and natural ability with computers. He enjoyed his work and was very good at it.

Mike was an avid Mountaineer football fan and enjoyed boating, golfing, riding four wheelers and mixing and listening to music. Mike enjoyed each day to the fullest. He had the ability to make lasting friendships after talking to someone for only a few minutes. He had a quick wit, and he always wore a smile on his face even when things weren't going well. Barbara Freeland

Barbara Freeland of Thomas, passes away on June 20, 2008,

She was the beloved mother of Jeffrey Rippin of Mentor, Ohio, and Michele Goss of Thomas. She loved and was loved by her grandson, Jeffrey Rippin.

She was born Barbara McGovern, at Painesville, Ohio, on Oct. 6, 1934, to Frank Edward and Emma Jane McGovern of Madison, Ohio.

She is survived by her sisters, Lillian Brown, Margaret (Rob) Davidson, Mary Ann (Donald) Bliss and Irene McGovern, all of Ohio.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Gertrude Patrickquin, Rose Silvis; and her brother, Frank Sonny" McGovern.

Barbara will be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews and by the close friends who were a part of her family.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis. The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate. Family will be receiving friends and family at the home of Michele Goss in Thomas following the service. There will be a separate graveside service in Madison, Ohio, on a date to be announced. Dellia Dmytryszyn

Dellia W. Dmytryszyn, 90. a resident of Rosewood Center of Grafton and a former resident of Elkins, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2008, in United Hospital Center.

She was born March 6, 1918, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Ellis and Cassie (Phillips) McDaniel.

She was married to Seman Dmytryszyn, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Pastor Charlotte Ann and husband, Richard Fretwell, of Elkins; one son, Don and wife, Flo Keyser, of Fall River, Mass.; two sisters, Margrette and husband, Harold "Junior" Boliner, of Webster and Goldie Moran of Grafton; one brother, Wilbert and wife, Claris McDaniel, of Arden; and seven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dmytryszyn was preceded in death by three sisters, Pearl McDaniel, Cleota Huffman and Gay Haddix; and four brothers, Oubert, Charles, Wilford and Stanley McDaniel.

Mrs. Dmytryszyn worked as a realtor and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3647.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi from 5 p.m. to p.m. Saturday and on Sunday, June 29, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour with Pastor Ann Fretwell officiating. Interment will follow in Clemtown Cemetery. Dorothy L. Johnson

Dorothy L. "D.J." Johnson, 63, a lifelong resident of Elkins, departed this life at 5 a.m. Sunday, June 22, 2008, after a long battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Lucille Shreve; and one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Susie Shreve.

She is survived by one daughter, Kimberly D. Barnett; and two grandchildren, Jillian S. And Brenden W. Barnett, all of Elkins. Also surviving are two sisters, Shirley J. Kittle and Wilma "Lee" Shiflett of Elkins; two brothers, Donald K. Shreve of Stalnaker Run Road and James A. Shreve of Junior; and several nieces and nephews.

D.J. was a graduate of the Clarksburg Beauty Academy and was most recently employed at Hair Graphics of Elkins.

The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to all of D.J.'s friends, patrons and the Cancer Society for their thoughts, prayers, flowers, food, cards and money over the last four years, during her illness. They would also like to thank Hospice Care Corp. for its help and support.

At the request of the deceased, her remains were cremated and there will be no memorial service. Cremation was under the direction of Rotruck-Lobb Funeral Home of Kingwood. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the Cancer Society in D.J.'s memory.  From 27 Jun 2008.

Edyth K. Furman

Ediyh Kathryn Furman, 97, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2008.

She was born Aug. 20, 1912, the daughter of the late Snoden and Margaret Belle Hinkle of Elkins.

Edyth was married to Clyde Furman in 1949 in Ft. Lauderdale Fla. They remained married until Mr. Furman passed away in 1977.

Edyth came to Elkins in 1996. She had previously resided in Riviera Beach, Fla. She was a resident of the Elkins Manor from 1966 to 2008. Edyth enjoyed gardening, bird watching, crocheting and was an avid baseball fan. She attended First United Methodist Church in Elkins.

Edyth is survived by her sister, Eileen Arbogast of Elkins; her brother, Robert K. Hinkle of Crystal Springs; and many nieces and nephews residing in West Virginia, Ohio, and Hawaii.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by three sisters, Genevieve Faircloth, Alice Weese and Elizabeth Stalnaker; and one brother, Kenneth Hinkle.

At Mrs. Furman's request, there will be a private interment in Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Care Corp., PO Box 760, Arthurdale, W.Va. 26520. Margaret Simmons

Margaret Patricia Simmons, 80, departed this life Wednesday, June 25, 2008, after an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 1, 1928, a daughter of the late Patrick M. Cutright and the late Gertrude Parsons Cutright Stalnaker.

She is survived by her husband of63 years, Albert L. Simmons of Montrose.

Also surviving are her sons, Alan L. Simmons and wife, Jimmie Jo, of Elkins and Thomas P. Simmons and wife, Gwen, of Frederick, Md.; grandson, Douglas A. Simmons; granddaughter, Stephanie (Simmons) Long and husband, Chris, of Buckhannon; and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brother-in-law, Robert Simmons and wife, Mildred, of Manassas, Va.; brothers-in-law, Leonard Simmons and wife, Aileen, of Sacramento, Calif., Clarence Simmons and wife, Lola, of Fairfield, Calif., and Hubert "Buddy" Simmons and wife, Bobbie, of Midland, N.C. She is also survived by nieces, Colleen (Simmons) Harless and husband, Mike and Carol (Simmons) Afholderbach and husband, Mark; and nephew, Richard Simmons and wife, Susan, all of Fairfield, Calif., along with several other nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Mrs. Simmons worked as a registered nurse with several hospitals and doctor's offices in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for more than 20 years. After retiring, she settled in Montrose with her husband.

A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, June 30, at 10 a.m. at Saint Brendan Catholic Church with Father Don Higgs as principal celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pauline B. Moyer

Pauline Belle Moyer, 90, died Monday, June 23, 2008, in Forum Health Northside Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

Pauline was born Jan 27, 1918, at Dartmoor, to the late Grover L. and Josie Clouston Bennett.

On March 12, 1937, she married Marshall Moyer, who preceded her in death in April of 1998.

She will be sadly missed by her "special gift," her granddaughter Caroline. Pauline leaves behind two sons, James (Carol) Moyer Sr. of Girard, Ohio, and Johnnie (Barb) Moyer of Struthers, Ohio; two daughters, Carolee Ann (Jim) Phares of Girard, Ohio, and Barbara (Larry) Hughenberg of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Frank (Gracie) Bennett of Florida; and six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam, Boyd and Jack Bennett; four sisters, Belvia Schoonover, Bertha Stalnaker, Francis Moyer and Audrey Nelson; and one grandson, James Joseph Patsey.

She was a great homemaker and enjoyed word searches and playing bingo. Pauline was a former member of the Ohltown United Methodist Church.

Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today at Crown Hill Chapel Mausoleum in Vienna, Ohio, with the funeral service scheduled at 3 p.m. Entombment will be in Crown Hill Burial Park. The Selby-Simpson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.  From 27 Jun 2008.

Roscoe Nelson

Roscoe "Buck" Nelson, 77, of Route 2, French Creek, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 24, 1931, in Tucker County, a son of the late Edgar E. "Double E" and Nela Christine Huffman Nelson.

On June 15, 1993, he was united in marriage to Barbara Robinson Nelson.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Keith and wife, Tish Nelson, of Waynesboro, Pa., and Randy and wife, Jodi Nelson, of Buckhannon; one daughter, Joni Nelson-Howard of French Creek; one stepson, Jerry Dunlavy of French Creek; one stepdaughter, Terry Burr of French Creek; four granddaughters, Tiara and Ciara Howard of French Creek, Cassie and husband, Pat Andrews, and Kristin and husband, Josh, all of Buckhannon; six stepgrandchildren, Dustin, Shelby, Dakota, L.J., Danny and Ashley; three great-grandchildren, Tanner and Austin Andrews and Presley Wilt; five brothers, Roy Nelson, Burley "Jake" Nelson, Bill Joe Nelson, Donald "Dude" Nelson and Jim Nelson, all of Dry Fork; and three sisters, Doris Evans of Hickory, N.C., Mary Kathryn Smith of Mentor, Ohio, and Joanne Huffman of Dry Fork.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Jean Kimble.

Mr. Nelson was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers. He was a member of Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598 and a member of the AFL/CIO. He was a Christian by faith. His granddaughters, Tiara and Ciara say, "He was the perfect grandpa."

Sara M. Burget

Sara Marie Burget, 92, of Buckhannon, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at her home.

She was born May 28, 1916, at Tyrone, Pa., the daughter of the late Sanford J. and Charlotte Macready Weston.

On Nov. 28, 1936, she married Robert B. Burget, who passed away on Feb. 15, 1999.

She is survived by a nephew, Gary Burget of Cary, N.C.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Burget was a homemaker.

Jean M. Jones

Jean Maxwell Fowler Jones, 90, died peacefully on June 24, 2008, after a short illness.

Born in Clarksburg in 1917, she was the daughter of Claude Brent Maxwell and Winifred Lantz Maxwell and the wife of the late L. Baker Fowler of Elkins and the late W. Lyle Jones of Bridgeport.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents and siblings, John Brent Maxwell and Winifred M. Sawyer.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her children and their spouses, John R. Fowler and Mary, Jean M Biggs and Davis and William B. Fowler and Winky, as well as her grandchildren, John R. Fowler Jr., Sarah F. Carrington, Mellissa M. Hunt, Lindsay H. Fowler, Winnie H. Williams, James T. Doyle IV, Maltby L. Fowler and Eleanor M. Fowler. Her great-grandchildren include Phillip, Will, Lindsay, Maddy, Townsend, Max, Sadie and James.

Jean graduated with degrees in music from West Virginia University and taught in Lumberport before her marriage. She subsequently lived in Elkins, where she was a devoted homemaker, mother and wife. Jean was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Kappa Kappa Gamma, the American Association of University Women and the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church. After the death of Mr. Fowler in 1969, she moved to Bridgeport and later married Mr. Jones.

The family wishes to thank Teresa Mulling and the staff at Edgewood Summit for their loving care during her last years.

Madeline Howell

Madeline America Howell, 82, of Locust Avenue, Philippi, died Friday morning, June 27, at her home following an extended illness.

She was born June 30, 1925, near Tacy community, a daughter of the late Vernon George and Buna Maude (Mouser) Boyles.

On Jan. 30, 1946, she was married to the Rev. Marvin L. Howell, who preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 1986.

Surviving are five daughters, Carol Porter and husband, Ron, of Quiet Dell, Linda Kines and husband, James, Janet Straughn, Jo Ellen Cleavenger and Pamela Booth, all of Philippi; three brothers, Vernon Gilbert Boyles of Niles, Ohio, Leonard Boyles of Canton, Ohio, and Dewayne Boyles of Minerva, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lisa Kines Richards.

Mrs. Howell was a homemaker. She was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 30 from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St., Philippi. Pastor Howard Swick will officiate and interment will follow in the Marsh Graveyard at Cross Roads.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour, on Monday.

Robert Herron Sr

Mr. Robert Lee Herron Sr., 64, a resident of Route 2, Belington, departed this life in the United Hospital Center at Clarksburg 7:34 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2008, following a two-month period of declining health.

He was born Oct. 3, 1943, at Parsons, a son of the late Sherwood "Dick" and Darlene Golden Herron. He was twice married. His first wife was the former Glenna Jo Biller, whom he married on Aug. 16, 1962. She preceded him in death on May 19, 1983. He was married again on March 5, 1984, to the former Linda D. Sinsel, who survives at their home.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert L. Herron Jr. of Philippi, Danny Herron and wife, Dawn, of Philippi; and four daughters, Tracee Brantner and husband, Luke, of Richmond, Va., Tina Boyett and husband, Dan, of Akron, Ohio, Michelle Alt and husband, Chuck, of Belington and Crystal Dawn Herron of Belington. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Frances Sinsel of Mogador, Ohio, and Helen Simmons of Bridgewater, Va.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his two favorite dogs, Susie and Shadow.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Sherwood Herron Jr.

Mr. Herron attended the schools of Barbour County and was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Belington. He was a 32-year employee of the Kingsford Charcoal Plant in Parsons, from which he retired in 2006 as a maintenance mechanic. Mr. Herron had a love for traveling and camping. He enjoyed building and making things with his hands and these things he will be greatly remembered for.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Talbott Funeral Home in Belington and on Sunday until 1 p.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Pastor David Shelton officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery near Belington.
