Margaret C. Godwin

Margaret Catherine Davis Godwin, 93, of Portsmouth, Ohio, formerly of Belpre, Ohio, died June 7, 2008, in Hillview Retirement Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

She was born Jan. 18, 1915, at Beverly, the daughter of the late Thomas Harrison and Pearl Irene Isner Davis.

She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Martha’s Circle. She graduated from Beverly High School in 1933.

Survivors include her son, Thomas Elliott Godwin and his wife, Pam, of Parkersburg; her daughter, Karen Lynn Wensch and her husband, Ward, of Baltimore, Md.; Three grandchildren, Marjo Lynn Godwin, Melissa Diane Harbin and Graham Elliot Godwin; a sister, Mona Mullenax of Florence, Ky.; and a niece, Kathy Betz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Godwin in 1997; and a brother and sister-in-law, Morris and Lyndall Davis.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Belpre, Ohio, with the Rev. David Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Belpre Cemetery. Martha L. Swartz

Martha Louise Roberts Swartz, 61, a resident of Parsons, departed this life early Thursday morning, June 5, 2008, at her home, following a short illness.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Parsons today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Tuesday, June 10, at 11 a.m. Pastor Allen D. Ocie Mallow

Ocie Mallow, 89, of Dry Fork, passed away June 7, 2008, in David Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

She was born Dec. 27, 1918, at Jenningston, a daughter of the late Wimbert Morral and Delphia Arbogast Morral.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Omar Mallow in 1970.

She is survived by three sons, Ray and Shirley Mallow of Harman, Larry and Annettee Mallow and Robert Mallow, all of Dry Fork; three daughters, Donna Zahn of Williamsfield, Ohio, Grace and Charles Corbitt and Sharon and Phillip Bonner, all of Dry Fork; one stepson, Dolan Mallow of Onego; two sisters, Ruby Harrison and Effie Fitzwater, both of Flintstone, Md.; and 43 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, two daughters, four brothers and two sisters.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at Dry Fork Assembly of God Church in Dry Fork with the Rev. Benjamin H. Lee

Benjamin Harvey Lee, 71, a resident of Parsons, departed this life late Sunday evening, June 8, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins. He had been in declining health.

He was born Thursday, June 28, 1956, at Howard County, Md., a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Lee and Edna Smallwood Lee.

He was married to the former Charlotte Raleigh, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are one son, Robert E. Lee of Florida; four daughters, Kathleen Lee Snow and Phyllis Lee, both of Maryland, Rebecca Lee of West Virginia and Patty Lee Bryan of Tennessee; one brother; Micky Porter of West Virginia; and several grandchildren.

Preceeding him in death were two brothers, Robert and Jimmy; and one sister, Margaret.

He attended the schools of Maryland. He was employed as a truck driver for Exxon Mobile for many years and was an independent hauler for various fuel companies. He loved fishing and crabbing.

A graveside service will be conducted at the Pifer Mountain Cemetery at St. George on Wednesday, June 11, at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Carolyn Shreve will officiate and interment will follow. Edwin P. Morrison

Edwin Paul Morrison, 89, of 594 Westfield Road, Jane Lew, went home to be with the Lord at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, June 8, 2008, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Weston.

He was born April 10, 1919, at Berlin, a son of the late Ed and Bertie Lewis Morrison.

On June 5, 1946, he married Delena C. Morrison who preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 2003.

A daughter and son-in-law, Paula Jane and Kent Taylor of Beverly, and a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth W. and Raelene Morrison of Clendenin, survive him. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Rebecca Taylor Burns of Thomas, R. Kent Taylor II of Morgantown, Aaron Seth Taylor of Danville, Va., Raelena Ann Morrison Anderson of Pinch and K.W and Andrew P. Morrison, both of Clendenin; and three great-grandchildren, Caleb Burns and Alexis and Travis Anderson.

Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Darroll (Mary Virginia) Courtney of Barrickville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Two brothers, Denzil Ross Morrison and Eugene Corder Morrison, preceded him in death.

Mr. Morrison was inducted into active service in the U.S. Army Jan. 6, 1941, and served in the United States, Africa and Italy, which included the Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley Campaigns, and was wounded Aug. 2, 1944, in Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Metal, American Defense Service Medal with one bronze service star, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars, European, African, Middle East Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars, Expert Badge with Bayonet Bar, Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar, World War II Victory Medal, and Honorable Service Lapel Button World War II. He was a first sergeant when discharged at Fort George G. Meade, Md., on July 11, 1945. He graduated from Mountain State College in 1947, National Radio Institute (Radio & Television Servicing in 1949) and (Amateur Radio in 1982). Mr. Morrison was employed by the Columbia Gas System May 1, 1948 and retired Oct. 31, 1980, as a supervising engineer at Artemas Natural Gas Compressor Station, Artemas, Pa. He was a Methodist by faith.

Merritt Wilson III

Merritt Wilson III, 70, a resident of Pittsburgh, Pa. died Saturday, June 7, 2008, in The Angelus Personal Care Home in Pittsburgh. His death was sudden and unexpected.

He was born Dec. 18, 1937, at Elkins, the son of Merritt Wilson Jr. and Caroline Brady Wilson, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by one sister, Grace Sundelin of Elkins; and a nephew, Andrew Sundelin and wife, Jennifer Grotpeter, of Denver, Colo.

Mr. Wilson grew up in Carmel, Ind., and graduated from Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis and was recognized as a Francis Wayland Scholar at his graduation from Brown University, Providence, R.I., in 1960. He earned a master’s degree in English literature from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and did additional graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania while working as an instructor at Rider College, Lawrenceville, N.J., the University of Pennsylvania and West Virginia University. He was active at the Renaissance Center, Vintage Senior Center and the First Unitarian Church while residing in Pittsburgh. He will be missed for his engaging sense of humor and his love of the arts which ranged from Maria Callas to the Simpsons.

A remembrance will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, in the family home at 109 High St. in Elkins. At the request of the deceased, his remains were cremated. Sandra J. Brooke

Sandra Jean Brooke, 72, of Davis, passed away June 9, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born Oct. 15, 1935, at Davis, a daughter of the late Frank Melvin and Alice Adele Shreve Roby.

She is survived by three sons, Frank Robert Brooke of Benbush, Phillip Gregory Brooke of Front Royal, Va., and William Russell Brooke of Davis; one daughter, Cheryl Jean Hopson of Charles Town; one brother, William Frank Roby of Oakland, Md.; and seven grandchildren, Faith Adele, Aubrey Dean, Julia Dorthea, Amy, Troy, Andrew and Joseph.

Sandra was employed as an auditor for Blackwater Falls State Park. She was a life-long member of the Davis United Methodist Church, Rebekah Lodge 274, Fraternal Order of Eagles 936 Ladies Auxiliary and Tucker County Senior Citizens. She served as secretary for the Davis School Reunion and she played piano for Tucker County Chorus, St. Thomas Aquinas Church and the Davis United Methodist Church. She was an avid sports enthusiast and season ticket holder for West Virginia University football games. Sandra also enjoyed attending rock and roll concerts.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hinkle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Davis United Methodist Church with the Rev. Virginia Stalnaker

Virginia Mae “Ginny” White Stalnaker, 80, a resident of Elkins, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2008, in Colonial Place.

She was born April 25, 1928, at Job, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland White and Mabel Etta Hartman White.

On Feb. 6, 1948, at the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elkins, she was married to Charles E. “Buck” Stalnaker, who survives.

Also surviving are one sister, Glenda Lee White Bucklew of Summerfield, Fla.; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were seven brothers, Otha T. White, Warren Adrian White, Hubert L. White, Howard C. White, Argil D. White, James A. White and Norman Lewis White; and one sister, Vada Arvetta White.

Mrs. Stalnaker was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1946. She was employed at Security Pacific Financial Services of Elkins. She started out as a cashier then became manager until her retirement on Sept. 1, 1989, after 36 years. She loved camping, fishing and other outdoor activities. She was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene of Elkins.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. Dorsey McWilliams

Dorsey Kenneth McWilliams, 91, a resident of Beverly, departed this life Thursday, June 5, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown.

Harland W. Shaffer

Harland Wayne Shaffer, 91, a resident of Beverly where he made his home with his daughter, Delores Jean “Dee” Peaslee, passed away unexpectedly at 8:51 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at his residence.

At Mr. Shaffer’s request, his remains were cremated. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 12, in Aurora Cemetery at Aurora. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley and the Rev. Kendra Jordan

Kendra Jordan, 35, of Fairmont, passed away Monday, June 9, 2008, in Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Kendra was born Nov. 27, 1972, at Fairmont, the daughter of Richard and Karen Doll Hall of Elkins.

Kendra was employed at BC Bank in Fairmont, was a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church of Elkins, attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fairmont, was a graduate of Fairmont State College University and obtained her master’s degree at West Virginia University.

In addition to her parents, Kendra is survived by her husband, Chuck Jordan; children, Zachary Jordan and Sydni Jordan, all at home; brother and sister-in-law, Jason Hall and his fiance, Christina, of Snowshoe; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Sandra and Charlie Jordan of Elkins; grandparents, Agnes Doll of Fairmont and Lois Wineland of Derry, Pa.; uncle, David Doll and wife, Shirley, of Boothsville; cousin, Mark Doll of Boothsville; and sister-in-law, Christina Jordan of Elkins.

Preceding Kendra in death were her grandfather, Arnold Doll; grandparents, Pearlie and Helen Hall; grandfather, William Wineland; and cousin, Tracy Doll.

Donald D.Hedrick

Mr. Donald D. Hedrick, 88, passed away peacefully at his home at 118 Easy St., Elkins, on June 10, 2008. He had been in declining health since January.

He was born July 7, 1919, at Whitmer, the son of the late Ona T. Hedrick and Dolly Ellen Mullennex Harper.

On March 21, 1947, he was married to the former Madelyn W. Bodkin, who survives.

He is also survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sonja K. and Donnie Corbin of Elkins; three grandsons, Scott and wife, Tanya, of Fredericksburg, Va., Stephen and wife, Karen, of Riverview, Fla., and Chris and wife, Jennifer, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Paige Nichole and Ethan Scott of Fredericksburg, Va., and Quinn Arrington and Avery Ella of Winston-Salem, N.C. Also surviving are one sister, Elaine Adams and husband, Don, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law, Betty Harshbarger and husband, Bob, of Elkins; brother-in-law, Randall Bodkin and wife, Carol, of Montrose; a special aunt, Mary Hedrick Bodkin of Loraine, Ohio; a special “granddaughter,” Holly Conklin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Burnham.

Mr. Hedrick served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He was inducted on Sept. 3, 1941. During his service years, he served in Algeria French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, the Northern Apennines and Po Valley. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct and the American Defense Service Medal in the European Theatre. On Sept. 2, 1944, Mr. Hedrick was blown from his bulldozer after hitting a land mine, while building roads with the 19th Army Engineers Core. Following the war, he returned to Elkins and worked for Bob Hedrick for many years until his death. He then became co-owner along with Evelyn Parsons of Hedrick’s Cigarette and Vending Service. In 1990, after his retirement, he and his wife moved to Deland, Fla. where they lived for 15 years before returning to Elkins. Mr. Hedrick was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post Number 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a Protestant by faith.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 13, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Icie M. Wright

Icie Mae (Vance) Wright, 91, a resident of 212 Chestnut St., Philippi, passed away Wednesday June 11, 2008, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 22, 1916, in Braxton Co., a daughter of the late James and Mary Margaret (McCauley) Vance.

She was united in marriage July 30, 1938 to Floyd Elver Wright Sr., who preceded her in death April 1965.

Surviving are three daughters, Geraldine M. and husband, Tony J. Veltri, of Grafton, Pauline J. and husband, Johnny M. Slatt, of Greensburg Pa., and Eloise J. and husband, Mark L. Hollen, of Valley Furnace; one son;, Floyd Elver Jr. and wife, Jacquelyn A. Wright, of North Highlands, Calif.; and seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren

Mrs. Wright was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by three brothers, Thurman, Robert and Mast Vance; and four sisters, Rachel Furr, Sophia Spotloe, Ida Spotloe and Gennive Ware.

Mrs. Wright was homemaker and a member of St. John’s Methodist Church of Grafton.

Walnut St., Philippi on Friday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the service hour with Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Clarke R. Prouty

Clarke Robert Prouty, 75, of Elkins, died June 4, 2008 of heart failure, at his home.

He was born June 30, 1932, at North Platte, Neb., beloved son of the late Edward Morey Prouty and the late Leota Manor Pearson.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sheila Prouty; her mother, Lucille Charles; his children, Karen Shea, wife of Sean, Kathy Hillegas, wife of Michael, Carol Metzger, wife of Johnny, and Scott Prouty, husband to Ellen Hatton; as well as his grandchildren, William Shea, Dustin Brians, Paige and Morgan Hillegas. Also surviving are his brother, Edward Pearson and wife, Brenda, of San Diego, Calif.; and his half brother, Theodore B. Pearson and wife, Joan, of Warwick, N.Y.

He moved to Elkins in 1998 upon retirement after spending the majority of his career working at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. A lifelong musician, he played banjo in several groups and was a well known builder of musical instruments. He was an enthusiastic participant and volunteer with the Augusta Heritage Center of Elkins.

Memorial services will be conducted at Robbins Memorial Chapel, Davis & Elkins College, Elkins at 11 a.m. on June 16 with the Rt. Rev. Martin Townsend officiating. Flora A. Cooper

Flora Ann “Maggie” Cooper, 69, a resident of Elkins, the Harpertown Community, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2008, in Charleston Area Medical Center due to surgical complications. Her death was unexpected.

She was born June 14, 1938, a daughter of the late James and Margaret Magee.

She was married to Walter “Tom” Cooper, who survives in Elkins. The Cooper’s had celebrated 50 years of marriage in January.

Also surviving are a son, Walter T. “Jay” Cooper II and wife, Linda, of Kerens; a granddaughter, Heather Nicole Cooper Skidmore and husband, Brandon, of Montrose; a great-granddaughter, Madison Grace Skidmore; a brother, Johnny Magee of Beverly; and two canine friends, Holly Beth and Diesel.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1958, attended the Orlena United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Creative Homemakers Club, Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star, Order of the Odd Fellows, Woodmen of the World, Delphia Rebekah Lodge No. 62 of Elkins and the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

A committal service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The Rev. Charles Stevens will officiate and entombment will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to the Orlena United Methodist Church, in care of Milford Jones, Treasurer, Rt. 1, Box 31, Mill Creek, W.Va. 26280 in memory of Mrs. Cooper. Stella M. Coger

Stella Marie Coger, 85, a resident of Elkins, passed away Thursday morning, June 12, 2008, at her home.

She was born May 26, 1923, at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Otha Lee and Ellen Markley Herron.

On Nov. 26, 1939, at Monterey, Va., she was married to Clyde Coger, who preceded her in death on June 15, 1979.

Surviving are two sons, Gerald Coger and wife, Hallie, and Junior Coger and wife, Beth, all of Elkins; and three daughters, Lorena Burrows of Elkins with whom she made her home, Mrs. Don (Loretta) Bell of Anchorage, Alaska, and Mrs. Dan (Deannie)Simmons of Harrisonburg, Va. Eleven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchild also survive.

Also preceding her in death were one son, Ronnie Coger; two brothers, Russell and Ezra Herron; nine sisters, Valley Shiflett, Bertha Currence, Florence Tenney, Blanche Chamberlain, Nellie Wegman, Martha Herron, Alta Coger, Elva Barkley and Lori Currence; and a great-grandson.

Mrs. Coger was employed as a housekeeper for various families in the Elkins area prior to her retirement. She was a member of the New Life Fellowship Church of Elkins.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Clarke R. Prouty

Clarke Robert Prouty, 75, of Elkins, died June 4, 2008 of heart failure at his home. 

Memorial services will be conducted at Robbins Memorial Chapel, Davis & Elkins College, Elkins, at 11 a.m. on June 16 with the Right Rev. Martin Townsend officiating. Burial will be in Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, Md., on June 18 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Augusta Heritage Center Youth Scholarship Fund, Davis & Elkins College, 100 Campus Drive, Elkins, W.Va. 26241. Eugene Marteney

Eugene R. Marteney, 74, of Tahanto Trail, Harvard, Mass., died at his residence on June 9, 2008. 

He was born in Ridley Park, Pa., on Jan 26, 1934, son of the late Col. Charles and Lorene (Rathje) Marteney.

His father was an Army and Air Force chaplain who moved his family to Wiesbaden in 1948, where Eugene attended school in Frankfurt and then in Wiesbaden when a school was opened there. They returned to the U.S. where he attended high school in New York, and then graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Ala. Eugene graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and physics. He attended grad school as a philosophy major. He was mentored to develop a knowledge of transistors in 1962 which led him to a career in electrical engineering.

He worked as an electrical engineer for General Radio for 21 years, then for Digital, Compaq and HP, before retiring in 1999. Eugene had a love for music that led him to begin playing the oboe as an adult. He studied at New England Conservatory of Music and belonged to several orchestras including Fitchburg, Nashua, Cape Anne, Thayer Chamber Ensemble and the Symphony Pro Musica. He combined his woodworking skill with this interest and was known for hand crafting replicas of Bach and Mozart era oboes. Some of these are on loan to the Smithsonian so that musicians may practice on period instruments.

He enjoyed traveling and wintered in Puerto Rico and vacationed frequently in Germany. He was an avid bicyclist, commuting regularly to work on his bike, riding 100-mile (Century) tours and even building his own bicycle. He was a member of the Harvard Congregational Church and Theta Chi Fraternity. He and his wife were founding members of the town of Harvard Fourth of July Festival which, to this day, carries on the blueberry pie eating contest and purple faces which they initiated. He was also active with the Council on Aging establishing the computer training room and teaching classes.

Mr. Marteney is survived by his wife of 52 years, Arline (Franquis) Marteney of Harvard, Mass.; his children Cheryl (Marteney) Ladeau and her husband, Joe Ladeau, of Winchendon, Mass., David Marteney and his wife, Melissa (Brogden) Marteney, of Harvard, Mass., and Tamara Marteney of Warren, Vt. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Pierre Marteney of Manchester, Conn.; and his aunt, Annabelle Cruise of Huntington. He is the grandfather of Robbie B. Manson, Matthew D. Marteney, Alyson N. Marteney, Marla J. Davidson and Seth T. Davidson. 

Visiting hours were Friday at the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King St., Littleton, Mass. A private burial will be conducted at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be conducted at the Harvard Congregational Church on Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Commonwealth Hematology Oncology Center, 131 ORNAC, John Cuming Building, Suite 200, Concord, Mass. 01742.  From 14 Jun 2008. 

Flora A. Cooper

Flora Ann “Maggie” Cooper, 69, a resident of Elkins, the Harpertown community, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2008, in Charleston Area Medical Center due to surgical complications.

A committal service will be conducted at 10 a.m. today in Mountain State Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The Rev. Charles Stevens will officiate and entombment will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Orlena United Methodist Church, in care of Milford Jones, Treasurer, Route 1, Box 31, Mill Creek, W.Va. 26280 in memory of Mrs. Cooper. Jasmine Dawn Fortney, 2, a resident of Valley Head, passed away Wednesday evening, June 11, 2008.

She was born May 5, 2006, at Elkins, a daughter of Delmas Clyde Fortney Jr. and Loretta Thompson Fortney of Valley Head.

Also surviving are two brothers, Marcus Fortney and Arcavian Fortney; and one sister, Tamara Fortney, all at home. Maternal grandparents, James Thompson and Brenda of Philippi and Barbara Thompson and Dave of Junior; paternal grandparents, Delmas Fortney Sr. and Evelyn of Valley Head and Charlotte Fortney and Timmy of Valley Head; paternal great-grandmother, Lena Welch and Cliff of Valley Head; and several aunts, uncles, great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins also survive.

Also preceding Jasmine in death were great-grandparents, Arden Welch, Jessie and Norma Fortney, Margaret and Nelson Price, Ogle and Mildred Thompson and John and Rose Gerard.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at noon Monday from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mark Greaver and Pastor David Pridgen officiating.
