Alva H. Bennett

Alva H. Bennett, 78, of Buckhannon, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at his home.

He was born Aug. 31, 1929, in Upshur County, a son of the late Howard Martin and Ethel Radcliff Bennett.

On Sept. 12, 1953, he married Anna Susan Bailey, who preceded him in death on Dec. 28, 2006.

Also preceding him in death were one son, Marty Bennett; seven brothers, Howard Bennett Jr. Bobby Bennett, Ray Bennett, Jimmy Bennett, Billy Bennett, Arthur Bennett and Willis Bennett; two sisters, Anna Mae Ware and Mary Frances Small; one granddaughter, Lisa Robinson; and one great-granddaughter, Tanisha Robinson.

He is survived by four daughters, LaDonna Perry and husband, Roger, Diane Robinson and husband, David, Sharon Robinson and husband, Rusty, and Sandra Linger and husband, Phillip, all of Buckhannon; one son, Roger Bennett of Buckhannon; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lee Roy Bennett and wife, Wanda, of Buckhannon; and three sisters, Grace Cogar and Jean Linger, both of Buckhannon and Linda Perry and husband, Jim, of Gastonia, N.C.

Mr. Bennett served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, war a retired coal miner and was a member of Christian Fellowship Church.

Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home today from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the funeral home with the Rev. J. Charles D. Griffith

Charles David “Charlie” Griffith, 62, a former resident of Hambleton and a resident of Edgewood Manor of Lucasville, Ohio, departed this life Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in Southern Ohio Medical Center at Portsmouth, Ohio. He had been in declining health for several years.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Tuesday, May 20, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dessie M. Alcorn

Dessie Mae Stewart Alcorn, 94, of Durbin, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, at the home of her granddaughter, Regina, in Durbin.

Gene Smith

Eugene Clarence “Gene” Smith Sr., 77, a well known farmer of the Evenwood Community and past president of Randolph County Commission, departed this life Friday evening, May 16, 2008, at his home. He had been in declining health.

He was born Thursday, Jan. 29, 1931, at Elkins, a son of the late Ode Clarence Smith and Grace Katherine Cunningham.

On Jan. 29, 1957, at Covington, Va., he was married to the former Grace Kathleen “Kitty” Conte, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Eugene Clarence “Gene” Smith Jr. of Amma and Paul Evan Smith and wife, Donna, of Bridgeport; one daughter, Deborah Kaye Smith of Columbiana, Ohio; one sister, Eleanor Rosalea Moody of Keyser; three grandchildren, Sarah Kae Smith, Logan Scott Smith and Kaitlin Marie Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph Arnold Smith, Howard Dyre Smith and Warren Smith; and two half sisters, Lucille Zinn and Genevieve Brown.

Gene was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1949, had served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, had worked for the Randolph County Board of Education as a bus driver for 16 years and was a farmer, continuing to operate the family farm. He was a member of the H.W. Daniel’s Post 29, American Legion, a member of the Elkins Lodge 1135, B.P.O.E., where he served as past exalted ruler, chaplain and various other elected and appointed positions, had served as chairman of the Randolph County Board of Health, was past president of the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center and the Randolph County Board of Recreation, was a member of the Ruritan Club of Dryfork, the Allegheny Highlands Project Farm Bureau, the Disabled American Veterans, was a master shepherd for the State of West Virginia, having been awarded Sheepman and Cattleman of the Year for Randolph County, had served as the State President of Sheep Development, and he was a member of the Elkins First Church of Christ.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. today. The Elkins Lodge 135, B.P.O.E. will conduct ritualistic services today at 7:30 p.m. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, May 20, at 11 a.m. Evangelist Gary L. Kendall and the Rev. Gregory Lanham will officiate and interment will follow in Alpena Cemetery at Alpena where members of the H.W. Daniel’s Post 29, American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors. Leonard G. Bender

Leonard G. Bender, 78, of Hacker Valley, died Saturday, May 17, 2008, in United Hospital Center, in Clarksburg.

He was born May 21, 1929, in Webster County, a son of the late Lonnie and Sarah McCartney Bender.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Naomi Bender; and one brother, Arden Bender.

Leonard was retired from the West Virginia Division of Highways. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a talented singer and musician, loved the outdoors, enjoyed farming, woodworking and telling stories of days gone by to family and friends. He was a member of the Long Run Galilee Non-Denominational Church of Bendertown.

Services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 20, 1 p.m. at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs with the Rev. Chris Cosner officiating. Burial will be in Life Cemetery at Cleveland. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.  From 19 May 2008.

Margie Long

Margie (Mallow) Long, 95, of Cabins, died Saturday, May 17, 2008, in Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

Family were received friends on Sunday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Bible Missionary Church. Burial will be in Mallow Cemetery on Timber Ridge Road at Onego.  From 19 May 2008.

Marvin L. Cross Sr.

Mr. Marvin Lee “Shag” Cross Sr. 89, a lifelong resident of Belington and more recently a resident of Talbott Personal Care Home in Belington, departed this life 9:09 a.m. Sunday, May 18, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins following a period of declining health

He was born Oct. 5, 1918 at Sugar Creek near Belington, a son of the late Bruce and Elizabeth Mae Cross.

On Aug. 2, 1941, at Belington, he was united in marriage to the former Kathleen Virginia Board, who preceded him in death on Aug. 30, 1997.

Mr. Cross is survived by three sons, Marvin L. Cross Jr. and wife, Carol, of Dayton, Ohio, David L. Cross and wife, Sue, of Philippi and Donald R. Cross of Quiet Dell. Four grandchildren, Jon David Cross, Kevin Andrew Cross, Kimberly Dawne Seborne and Brian L. Cross also survive. Additional survivors include four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Right and Maysel Poling; and two brothers, Odbert G. “Dean” Cross and Bernard Cross. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Cross attended the schools of Barbour County and was a graduate of Belington High School with the class of 1938, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II He was a conductor for the B&O Railroad from which he had retired after 38 years of employment in 1978 and was a charter member of Laurel Mountain Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 410 of Belington. He was a member of the Belington Masonic Lodge 125 AF&AM for over fifty years and was a 14th and 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. His hobbies included hunting and fishing and riding his Honda Gold Wing trike. He faithfully attended the Westside United Methodist Church of Belington where he had been a member for many years.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 N Brandenburg St. in Belington on today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday until 11a.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Arden Beck and Sister Teresa Reddington officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery near Belington where the Belington Masonic Lodge will conduct ritualistic graveside services and the American Legion Post 44 of Philippi will conduct military Honors. Vickie R. Hardman

Vicki R. Hardman, 46, of Jessup, Md., and formerly of Buckhannon, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at her home.

She was born Sept. 17, 1961, at Buckhannon, a daughter of Donald R. Elmer of French Creek and the late Emma Jean Hurst Elmer.

She was united in marriage on Aug. 28, 1982 to David L. Hardman, who survives.

In addition to her father and husband, she is survived by one son, David Kyle Hardman of Maryland; five sisters, Donna and Danny Reed of Tallmansville, Debora and Joe Malcolm of French Creek, June and Roger Moran of Century, Twila and Herbie McClain of French Creek and Peggy and William Dahlheim of Buckhannon. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Linda Sloane of Alaska, and father-in-law, Charles Hardman of Maryland; and sister-in-law, Teresa Hardman of Alaska. Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Vicki was a 1979 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School and was a department manager for Wal-Mart in Maryland. She was an avid Scooby-Doo collector.

Anna M. McHenry

Anna Marguerite Hall McHenry, 89, of Buckhannon, died Monday, May 19, 2008, in New Hope Room and Board.

She was born July 10, 1918, at Bolair, a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Luvernia Jane Martin Hall.

On Aug. 20, 1946, she married Randolph Herman McHenry, who preceded her in death on April 23, 1994.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Daruis Randolph McHenry; two grandsons, Ellis Eugene Kline and Charles Randolph McHenry; one granddaughter, Debra Charlene McHenry; a son-in-law, Wilbert G. Perry; and four brothers and seven sisters.

She is survived by three sons, Daniel C. McHenry and wife, Kathie, of Buckhannon, David W. McHenry and wife, Jenny, of Cranberry, Pa., and Mark A. McHenry and wife, Connie, of Clarksville, Tenn.; four daughters, Norma R. Perry of Craigsville, Charlotte P. Kline and husband, Eugene, of Clarksville, Tenn. Wilma J. McHenry of Charleston and Retta Paulette Lowe and husband, Jim, of Clarksville, Tenn.; special caregivers, Joann Marple and Pat Donaldson; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Paul D. Hall of Birch River.

Mrs. McHenry was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church. In addition to being a homemaker, she also babysat and, in her later years, she worked as a senior companion.

Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home on Thursday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to noon, the funeral hour. The Rev. Bernice L. Tomey

Bernice Leona Tomey, 74, of Buckhannon, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

She was born Feb. 11, 1934, in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Maise and Pearly Young Furr.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Helen Carr and Wahneta Powell.

She is survived by one daughter, Lori Dawn Ward and husband, John, of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Katherine Jean Ward of Buckhannon; one grandson, John Charlton Ward III of Buckhannon; two sisters, Verlyn Rexroad of Buckhannon and Murl Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio; and three brothers, Guy Furr of Medina, Ohio, Kenneth Nelson Furr of Lodi, Ohio, and Larry Furr of Weston.

Mrs. Tomey was a school teacher for Upshur County Board of Education.

Jimmie B. Hinkle, 60, of Riverton, died Saturday, May 17, 2008, in Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Thelma P. Anastos

Thelma Payne Anastos, 86, of Carlisle, Pa., passed away May 15, 2008, in Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home, Carlisle, Pa.

Born in Elkins, she was the daughter of Cyrus and Melcena (Hall) Payne.

Married to Command Sgt. Major George A. Anastos, USA, Retired, of Newport, N.H., the couple were preparing to celebrate 55 years of marriage.

In addition to her husband, Thelma leaves behind her daughter, Mary Dunn of Pineville, Pa., her husband, Joseph, and two granddaughters, Cristin and Briana; her son, Ernest of Arlington, Va., his wife, Laura, and two grandsons, Erik and Mark; her son, Steven of Gainesville, Va., his wife, Sandra, and a granddaughter, Robyn, and grandson, Christopher; and her daughter, Barbara of Pennington, N.J.

Thelma will be remembered for her tireless efforts for her family, her volunteer work and her love of nursing. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed a good crossword puzzle. Thelma attained the rank of captain in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict.

A funeral service with military honors will be conducted in the Pavilion at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, Pa. at 11:30 a.m. today. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be sent to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 34th and Civic Center Boulevard, Philadelphia, Pa. 19104 or the Christian Appalachian Project, P.O. Cecil L. Kelley

Cecil Lee Kelley, 76, a resident of Heartland of Clarksburg and formerly of Route 2, Buckhannon, the Mt. Union community, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008, in United Hospital Center.

While at his home in the Mt. Union community, his niece, Becky Hoover, was his special caregiver.

He was born July 16, 1931, at Tenmile, the son of the late Paul and Lillie Perry Kelley.

He was also preceded in death on March 28, 2004 by his wife, Wilda Moss Kelley, whom he married on June 16, 1956.

He is survived by two sons, Randall Mark and wife, Patty Kelley, of Buckhannon and Thomas E. and wife, Debbie Kelley, of Buckhannon; two grandsons, the Rev. Tim Kelley of Terra Alta and Greg and wife, Jill Kelley, of Buckhannon; two great-grandsons, Dakota McCartney and Logan Kelley, both of Buckhannon; two sisters, Mary and husband, Bill Gatrell, of Tallmansville and Evon and husband, Robert Suder, of Swamp Run; four brothers, Virgil and wife, Mary Kelley, of Shreve, Ohio, Raymond Kelley of Fredericksburg, Ohio, Elmer and wife, Mabel Kelley, of Tallmansville and Carius Kelley of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Granville Kelley.

Mr. Kelley was a member of the United Mine Workers of American and Local Union 1938. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and four-wheeling. He had retired from Upshur Coals Corp. of Adrian.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23, at the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Tim Kelley and the Rev. George L. McClain

George Lewis McClain, 75, departed this life on March 27, 2008, at Smithville, Tenn.

He had been a resident of Randolph County from 1986-2004. He was retired from the U.S. Army and a member of Westside Baptist Church of McMinnvilee, Tenn.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Bernice White McClain; his parents, Joe Haskel and Georgia Pearl Turner McClain; a daughter, Elaine McClain; and one brother and two sisters.

Survivors include his beloved stepdaughters, Robin White Rybczynski and Linda Gail Eavers of Maryland; three stepsons, Jimmy White of Montrose, Danny and Mark White of Baltimore; two sons, Geary McClain of Pennsylvania and Michael McClain of Tennessee; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as six sisters and four brothers.

Mr. McClain donated his body to West Virginia University Guest Registrar for research.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. in Mountain State Memorial Gardens in Kerens. The Rev. Keith Miller will officiate. Color guards will be present to present a memorial flag to his beloved great-grandson, Joshua Coffman of Elkins. Joshua was his little shadow and constant companion for the eight years Mr. McClain lived in Montrose.   From 21 May 2008.

Kate M. Curran

Kate Mae Curran, 100, formerly of Davis, passed away May 17, 2008, in Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland, Md.

She was born March 23, 1908, at Davis, a daughter of the late James Calvin Curran and Mary Ann Sayre Curran.

She is survived by four nieces, Mary Pat Murray of Huntingtown, Md., Peggy Haas, of Bowie, Md., Virginia Saalman of Naples, Fla., and Joyce Sanford of Morehead City, N.C.; as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Miss Curran was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Owen Curran and Ralph “Patrick” Curran.

Miss Curran attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Prior to retiring, she worked as a social worker for community development. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and she donated much time to Catholic charities. Her long life was devoted to her family of friends.

Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Rosary will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Thomas with Father Timothy Grassi as Celebrant. Lewis Edward Stewart, 73, of Petersburg, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

Raymond Frazier

Raymond F. “Franklin” Frazier, 74, of West Union, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 15, 2008.

He was born Sept. 5, 1933, at Parkersburg, to the late C.R. and Pearl Frazier.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 30 years, Wilma Jean (Clowser) Frazier; sons, John H. (Kim) of Orlando and Michael Lee (Joy) Cundiff of Vienna; daughter, Susan Thayer of Orlando; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brother, Ray C. (Evon) Frazier of Elizabeth; sister, Anna Jane Cutlip of Massillon, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Following graduation from Wirt County High School, Glenville State College and West Virginia University, he was employed by Wirt County Board of Education as a classroom instructor, Braxton County Board of Education as principal at Gassaway High School, Braxton County High School and later as county superintendent of schools. He was later employed by Ritchie County Board of Education as principal at Pennsboro High School, Pendleton County Board of Education as principal of Circleville School (K-12), Doddridge County Board of Education from where he retired as county superintendent of schools. Following one year of retirement from the state of West Virginia, he went to work for Hardin County Board of Education in Kenton, Ohio, where he was employed as principal (K-12) for Hardin Northern School and later retired from the state of Ohio. He was a 32 degree Mason of Wirt Lodge 83 and was a member of Ohio State Teachers Association, West Virginia State Teachers Association and American Watchmakers Institution. Raymond enjoyed several hobbies, Among those were working on antique clocks, small engines, fishing, reading and collecting county history books of West Virginia.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Gassaway Baptist Church with The Rev. Paul O’Gorek and the Rev. Rick Hart officiating. Burial will be in Chrisman Cemetery at Chapel. Evanell E. Hanline, 46, of French Creek, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born Nov. 10, 1961, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Gary Thomas and Elizabeth Jean Umble.

She is survived by her companion, Leon Hanline of French Creek; two daughters, Christina Miller and husband, Shawn, of Philippi and Ginger Jean Marlow of French Creek; three grandsons, Colin Alderman of French Creek, Corey and Kaiden Miller, both of Philippi; two granddaughters, Tarani Day of French Creek and Madisson Miller of Philippi; stepmother, Myrtle Umble of Ivy; one brother, Gary Wayne Umble and wife, Alice, of Ivy; and two sisters, Pamela Glasser of Tennerton and Beth Ann Koon and husband, Jim, of Ivy.

Mrs. Hanline was a cashier.

Mary P. Abel

Mary Pearl Abel, 86, of Buckhannon, passes away Wednesday, May 21, 2008, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.

She was born Feb. 23, 1922, at Ivy, a daughter of the late Walter E. and Cora E. Jones Reese.

Her husband, Albert L. Abel, preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 1997.

Surviving are 11 children, Larry Abel and friend, Kathee Horn, of Rock Cave, Jerry Abel and wife, Sharlette, of Buckhannon, Roger Abel and wife, Libby, of Buckhannon, Stephen Abel and wife, Linda, of Buckhannon, Barbara Reger and husband, James, of Buckhannon, Philip Abel and wife, Twila, of Buckhannon, Daniel Abel and wife, Rebecca Schmidt, of Morgantown, Mary Beth Edmiston and husband, Robert, of Statesville, N.C., Diana Abel of Buckhannon, Robert Abel and wife, Vicky, of Buckhannon and Joseph Abel and wife, Kim, of Orlando, Fla.; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Glenna Wiles of Fairmont.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Franklin Reese, Burton Reese, Ralph Reese and David Reese; a sister, Mildred Dean; a son, Allen Abel, who passed away on Jan. 12, 2001; and a great-grandson, Austin Abel.

Mrs. Abel was a 4-H leader for 25 years, a 4-H All Star and secretary-treasurer of Mt. Hope Water Association for 20 years. She was a homemaker and attended Mt. Washington United Methodist Church.

Ellsworth Hamrick

Ellsworth Troy “E.T.” Hamrick, a resident of Culpeper, Va., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, in Culpeper Regional Hospital.

He was born June 17, 1943, at Marlinton, to Virginia Conrad Hamrick and the late Troy W. Hamrick.

E.T. retired from AT&T after 30 years. For 12 years, he operated Hamrick Telephone Contracting, from which he had recently retired. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Telephone Pioneers of America and Train Collectors Association.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving companion, Dianne Evans; his daughter, Stephanie Bright; one sister, Laverne Hamrick Chase; three grandchildren, Nicole, Christopher and Sara; one great-grandson, Avery; one niece, Carra Higgins; and one nephew, Troy Higgins.

A graveside memorial service for Ellsworth Troy “E.T.” Hamrick will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Swecker Cemetery, Monterville.  From 23 May 2008.

Hazel Vandevender

Hazel Marie (Simmons) Vandevender, 99, of Slatyfork, died Thursday, May 22, 2008, at her home in Slatyfork with Mountain Hospice and family by her side.

She was born Feb. 21, 1909, at Mingo, the daughter of the late Guy and Georgia (Williams) Simmons.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Donald Vandevender; son, Melvin Vandevender; and brother, Clinton Simmons, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her two daughters, Carolyn (Vandevender) Jack and husband, Sidney, and Mary Jane (Vandevender) Moses, all of Slatyfork; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Hazel was a homemaker and a member of Big Springs Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are being handled by VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at the funeral home with the Rev. Leon Brown officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Marlinton. Hubert C. Lewis

Hubert C. Lewis, 84, of Green Bank, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at his home in Green Bank.

Mr. Lewis was born July 30, 1923, at Esty in Greenbrier County, the second son of Asa C. Lewis and Lillie Workman Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Maxie Dixon Lewis; an infant son, Hubert Thomas Lewis; a daughter, Deanna Lewis; a grandson, Kevin Elza; three brothers, Calvin C. Lewis, Obie Lewis and Ava Lewis; and two sisters, Edna Lewis and Thelma Crabb.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Dollie Nelson Lewis; three daughters, Jolene and Neven Elza of West Farmington, Ohio, Linda and Doug Moore of Leavittsburg, Ohio, and Alma Lewis of Canton, Ohio; four sisters, Lucy Knaub, Grace Knaub, Shirley King and Wilma Stidom; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Ray Snedegar; and a very dear, precious and personal friend, Dave Plank.

Mr. Lewis was a Christian for many years, a maintenance man at Denmar Hospital, worked for Howe’s Leather Co. and retired from Union Metal Manufacturing in Canton, Ohio. He had also worked as a pump house operator at Hawthorn for Snowshoe. Hubert loved hunting, walking in the woods, working in his workshop, growing his garden and flowers and taking care of the lawn. Mr. Lewis was noted to be a hard working, quiet, soft spoken, God loving man who will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.

The family will receive their friends and family at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale on Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to noon, the funeral hour. Mary Gamble Kump, 92, of Elkins and recently a resident of Valentine’s Personal Care Home, departed this life Friday afternoon, April 11, 2008, at the home.

She was born Aug. 13, 1915, at Elkins, the fifth child of the late Edna Scott Kump and Gov. Herman Guy Kump.

She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Douglas Jenkins, the Rev. Janet Jenkins and the Rev. William Warlick officiating. Interment occurred on April 15, 2008, in Beverly Cemetery after graveside rites. Opal F. Brake

Opal Frances Carr Brake, 82, a resident of Kings Run Road, Elkins, departed this life Thursday afternoon, May 22, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1925, at Middle Mountain, Randolph County, a daughter of the late Solomon Carr and Stella White Carr.

On Dec. 20, 1945, at Elkins, she was married to Ralph Vincent Brake, who preceded her in death June 9, 1993.

Surviving are four sons, Benjamin Dee Brake of Manassas, Va., Daniel Von Brake and wife, Robin, of Bluemont, Va., Steven Reed Brake and wife, Lou, of Weston and Timothy Mark Brake and wife, Edie, of Elkins; one daughter, Sandra Kay Godwin and husband, Joe, of Montrose; two brothers, Curtis Carr and wife, Frances, and Solomon Carr and wife, Lois, all of Elkins; three sisters, Sylvia Carr and Irene Carr Coffman, both of Elkins and Georgetta Hammonds of Summersville; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were five brothers, Arthur, Raymond, Norman, Leonard and Clarence “Todd” Carr; and one sister, Leafy “Virginia” Lewis.

She attended the schools of Randolph County, was a mother and housewife, and was a member of Elkins First Church of the Nazarene. Opal loved her family, friends and church. The great outdoors was her favorite place.

Robert A. Shupp Jr.

Robert Allen “Bobby” Shupp Jr., 36, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Wednesday, May 21, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to diabetes.

He was born Dec. 29, 1971, at Parsons, a son of Robert Allen Shupp Sr. and the late Karen Ruth Allen Dixon, who preceded him in death Aug. 29, 2006.

He was married to the former Justina Renee Moore, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Anthony Scott Shupp of Burlington and Robby Allen-Lee Shupp of Parsons; and one sister, Kelly Ruth Osborn and fiance, Stephen Lee Church, of Illinois.

Proceeding him in death were one brother, James Edward Shupp; and one sister, Lillian Dawn Shupp.

He attended the schools of Tucker County and Indiana. He was an avid NASCAR fan and West Virginia Mountaineer fan and he loved to fish.

William J. Wright

William Jennings Wright, 72, of Philippi, died Thursday morning, May 22, 2008, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas following an extended illness.

He was born July 12, 1935, at Durbin, a son of the late Asa Harold and Amanda Alice (Collins) Wright.

On Sept. 4, 1955, he married the former Betty Ella Simmons, who survives at their home at Route 3, Philippi.

Also surviving are two children, Mrs. Jack (Teresa Lee) Taylor of Volga and William Robert Wright, Philippi; five grandchildren, Jill Leann Taylor, a student at the Marshall University School of Medicine, Jack Webb Taylor, William Robert Wright II, Rebecca Suzanne Wright and William Hunter Wright, all of Philippi; and two brothers, Berwyn Wright of Morgantown and Boyd Wright of Durbin.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Erma Lane and Edna Tharp; and by one brother, Wilbur Wright.

Mr. Wright was a 1954 graduate of Green Bank High School, a 1955 graduate of Fairmont Business College and a 1970 graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. He began a lifelong career in banking in 1955 at Community Bank and Trust of Fairmont as manager of the bookkeeping department and received several promotions during his 15 years of employment to auditor, assistant cashier and cashier. While residing in Fairmont, he was a member of the Fairmont Civitan Club for 14 years, during which he served as secretary, treasurer and president. In 1970, he accepted the position of executive vice president and cashier of the Barbour County Bank of Philippi and served in that position until his retirement on Sept. 1, 2000. He also served on the board of directors of the bank and of its parent corporation, Appalachian Financial Corp. He was a member of the West Virginia Bankers Association and served on the Agricultural Committee. He was also a member of the University of Hard Knocks. Upon relocating to Philippi, he was a member of the Philippi Kiwanis Club and the Barbour Country Club. In his later years he was a member of the Philippi Lions Club and the Ty-Hannon Sportsman’s Club. In his childhood, Mr. Wright was baptized a member of the Durbin Church of the Brethren and upon moving to Philippi, became an active member of the Philippi United Methodist Church where he served on several boards and committees and was an active member of the adult choir until becoming ill with Parkinson’s Disease in 2001.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 26, from the Philippi United Methodist Church at the corner of Mason and Walnut streets, behind the Philippi Public Library. The Rev. J. Ed McDaniels of Buckhannon will officiate and interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from noon until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, on Monday. Pattie Waybright

Pattie Y. “Pretty Pattie” Waybright, 73, passed away at her home on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, after an extended illness.

She was born April 13, 1935, at Valley Head, a daughter of Forest and Rosella Blaine Hannah, and resided most of her life in Canal Fulton, Ohio.

She was a member of the Canal Fulton Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Legacy Chapter 596 and had retired from the Northwest School District. She was previously a real estate agent.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lori Ann.

Pattie is survived by her husband of 52 years, Luther; daughter, Kandace (Kurt) Huelsman; sons, Michael L. Waybright and Bradley A. Waybright; grandchildren, Courtney, Kristin, Kelsey and Jarod; and great-granddaughter, Emma.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the Canal Fulton United Methodist Church, 363 West Cherry St., Canal Fulton, Ohio.
