John F. Malone

John F. Malone, 69, died May 6, 2008, at Anchorage, Alaska, of cancer.

A service will be at noon Monday at the Fort Richardson Chapel. E-mail [email protected] or call 688-1496 for directions and instructions to get on post. Family members and friends will gather for a wake at American Legion Post 1 at Arctic Boulevard and Fireweed Lane after the service.

John was born Feb. 19, 1939, in Jersey City, N.J. Growing up in Woodcliff Lake, N.J., he developed a love of nature and the outdoors. His high school years were spent in Elkins where he began a lifelong friendship with the Proudfoot family. In 1960, John realized his dream to come to Alaska when the U.S. Army assigned him to Fort Richardson as a marksmanship trainer after he had served in the All Army Shooting Team.

Throughout his 48 years in Alaska, John wore many hats to reflect his wide range of interests. After leaving the Army, John began his work in law enforcement, first as a corrections officer, then as an Alaska state trooper in Kodiak and the Aleutians. He found his longtime Alaska home in Bethel after a “temporary” trooper post extended to more than 40 years. Life in western Alaska was filled with adventures as John partnered small businesses in air taxi and cargo services and the insurance trade. Eventually he joined the city government as a municipal and regional planner, retiring as the Bethel city planner in 2006.

John was profoundly interested in developing services for people with disabilities. He founded Bethel Community Services Foundation Inc., a nonprofit corporation dedicated to fostering community-based programs. John also served as a trustee for the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority from its inception in 1994 until shortly before his death.

Among his never-ending list of favorites were planes, Winchesters, Porsches and Russian tea samovars. He had done everything at least once and loved to recount these events.

“My brother is simply the most fascinating person I have ever known,” said Mark Malone.

After his recent move to Anchorage, John could be found almost every day at Rob’s shop, sharing his stories with the Spenard Safety Bunch, his friends to the end.

He is survived by his children, John R. Malone, Lorraine Sheridan, Mary Fredericks Binnig, Jason R. Malone and Rosalie J. Malone; grandchildren, Bethany and Kyle Sheridan, Michael Binnig, Dylan Malone, and Taylor, Paige and Riley Malone; and siblings, Mark Malone, Tom Malone and Alice Erickson.   From 10 May 2008.
