Flora F. Hively

Flora Frances “Flo” Hively, a resident of Beverly, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2008, in Valentine’s Assisted Living in Beverly where she had been a resident for the past year.

She was born July 2, 1922, at Morgantown, the daughter of the late Wilford and Hattie Greynolds.

She was twice married, first to Benny Krushansky, who preceded her in death. She later married Carl Hively, who also preceded her in death.

Surviving are a daughter, Frances Reed of Salisbury, Md.; two sons, Dave Hively and wife, Wilma, of Huttonsville and Jim Hively and wife, Ashley, of Beverly; three granddaughters, Gerry Reed of Germantown, Md., Kristie Dunn of Salisbury, Md., and Crystal Hively of Huttonsville.

Preceding her in death were two sons, Tom and Benny Krushansky; and one granddaughter, Carla Hively.

Flo served for many years on the Beverly Town Council and as mayor for a short time. She and her husband owned and operated The Beverly Grill in the early 1960s ,and she also owned The Hive Gift Shop in Beverly. Her love of bookkeeping was apparent as she worked for many local businesses throughout her life, retiring from Dr. Ernest Hart’s office in 2005 at the age of 82.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mark Houser officiating. Interment will follow in Beverly Cemetery. James M. Beer

James M. “Chub” Beer, 89, of Buckhannon, died Saturday April 26, 2008, at his home.

He was born May 6, 1918, at Sago, a son of the late Kenner and Nettie M. Grubb Beer.

On Dec. 10, 1942, he married Susan Katherine Shahan Beer, who preceded him in death on July 8, 2007.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Maxell Lee Beer; and one sister, Elizabeth Beer.

He is survived by two sons, James M. Beer II and wife, Barbara of Morgantown and Stephen K. Beer of Morgantown; two stepgranddaughters, Autumn McDaniel of Morgantown and Amber Nearranzio of Latrobe, Pa.; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mr. Beer was a retired manager for Columbia Gas, a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Pennsylvania. He served with the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II and with the 322nd Bombardier Group. He was a member of Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663, Disabled American Veterans and the Buckhannon Country Club.

Friends were received Sunday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Stackpole officiating. Burial will be in Hampton Church Cemetery. Buckhannon VFW Post 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion and DAV Chapters 5 and 36 will conduct military honors at the graveside. James T. Talbott

Mr. James T. “Tommy” Talbott, 53, a resident of Route 1, Belington, departed this life Friday, April 25, 2008, as a result of a tractor accident.

He was born Jan. 16, 1955, at Philippi, a son of the late Bradford “Bant” Talbott and Ruth Biller Talbott.

On Oct. 7, 1989, at Belington, he was united in marriage to the former Betty Louise Daff, who survives at their home in Belington.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Sheila Talbott of Jane Lew; three sons, Junior Talbott and wife, Chrystal, of Elkins, Michael L. Talbott of Elkins and Terry Talbott with the U.S. Navy; and two stepchildren, Paula Brooks and husband, Jonathan, of Belington and Brian Williams and wife, Libby, of Buckhannon. Also surviving are two brothers, Junior Biller of Belington and Robert “Bobby Corbin of Belington; and grandchildren; Morgan and Amber Talbott, Tara George, Jeremy and Ryan Brooks, Alex and Austin Williams and Bradley Talbott. Additional survivors include a stepmother. Cindy Talbott; and two stepbrothers, Charles and Scott Durrett.

Mr. Talbott attended the schools of Barbour County and worked in various farming occupations. He was a Protestant by faith.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on today and on Tuesday until 11 a.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Sandra L. Kelley

Sandra Lane Kelley, 60, a resident of Elkins, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2008, in Nella’s Inc. at Crystal Springs.

She was born Jan. 30, 1948, at Elkins, a daughter of Betty Lou Nutter Kelley Casto, who survives in Elkins and the late Gail Kelley.

She was never married.

Also surviving are one brother, Jeffrey Gail Kelley of Elkins ;and one stepsister, Linda Casto Losquadro of Philippi.

Sandra was a graduate of Elkins High School and a member of First Baptist Church of Elkins.

Willa M. Bibey

Mrs. Willa Mae “Shorty” Bibey, 77, a resident of the Laurel View Apartments in Belington, departed this life early Saturday morning, April26, 2008, in Barbour County Good Samaritan Center .

She was born July 26 1930, at Cassidy, a daughter of the late Willie “Bill” and Gladys Mae Cutright Rutherford.

She is survived by two sons, Roger N. Bibey and wife, Diana, of Belington and James S. “Jim” Bibey and wife, Kelly, of Elkins; and one daughter, Barbara K. Isner and husband, Phil, of Elkins. Additional survivors are one half brother, Carl Elmore and wife, Carolyn, of Jimtown; half sisters, Rosa Lee Miller and husband, Howard, of Mabie, Katherine Howes and husband, Alfred, of Philippi, Wilma Jean Merritt of Beverly and Joyce Bender and husband, Tom, of Kingsville.; and eight grandchildren; Brian Bibey and wife, Julie, Rochelle Carpenter and husband, Jamie, Angela Bibey, Justin Bibey, Emily Bibey, Mathew Barr and wife, Becca, Christopher Barr and Candace Thomas and husband, Kris. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren, Paige and Gage Bibey, Cori, Maddie, McKenzie and Averi Carpenter, Amanda Sell, Noah Marsh and Bryce Taylor; one great-great-grandchild, Hannah Rose Cole and three stepgrandchildren, Travis Michetti, Jill Cope and husband, Russ, and Phil S. Isner.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one half sister, Shirley Bodkins; a stepfather Fred Elmore; two half brothers, Ray and Robert Elmore, and her former husband, Kenneth Bibey.

Mrs. Bibey attended the schools of Randolph County and had worked for different restaurants in Belington including Yeager’s, Linda’s and Bucklew’s, and had been employed by Reidboard Brothers . At the time of her retirement, she was employed by Barbour County Emergency Squad and during her retirement she took care of the elderly in their homes. Mrs. Bibey was a member of Stringtown United Methodist Church and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Laurel Mountain Post 410 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St, in Belington from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, and on Wednesday until 2 p.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ilene V. Pickens

Ilene Virginia Steerman Pickens, 81, of Rock Cave, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at the home of her daughter, under the care of family and St. Joseph’s Hospice.

She was born Jan. 2, 1927, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late W.H. and Sylvia Orina Rexroad Steerman.

She was united in marriage on April 2, 1951, at Kings Island, Ga., to Loy Valley Pickens, who preceded her in death on May 28, 1997.

She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Lynn and husband, John A. Long, of Rock Cave; one son, Larry Doyle and wife, Rebecca Lynn Pickens, of Rock Cave; grandchildren; Heather Jo Long Trayer and husband, Terry Ward Trayer, of Jacksonville, Fla., Courtney Noel Long Caroway of Morganton, N.C., James Doyle, Jonathan Michael, Jacqueline Joy, Loy Kenneth and Maxwell Vaughn Pickens all of Rock Cave; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler Nathaniel and Zoei MaKayla Trayer. She is also survived by five brothers, Warren and Elsie Steerman of Harrington, Del., Kenneth and Betty Steerman of Minford, Ohio, Max and Harriet Steerman of Sylmar, Calif., Eugene and Mary Steerman of Lake Station, Ind., Tom and Georgia Steerman of Dover, Del.; two sisters, Nora Douglas of Monaca, Pa., and Jeraldine Wolf of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Oscar, Leonard, Rex and Wilmer Steerman; and three sisters, Evelyn Hinzman, Delphia Reger and Maude Spaur.

Ilene was a member of Rock Cave Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Walkersville High School and St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Clarksburg. She retired as the supervising registered nurse of Los Angeles County emergency room.

Friends will be received at Rock Cave Baptist Church on Friday, May 2, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor David Jessie and Pastor Eugene Helmick officiating. Mattie J. Cowden

Mattie Jean Cowden, 78, of Sevierville, Tenn., formerly of Elkins and Charleston, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2008, at home.

She was a retired Charleston bus driver and a member of Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral in Charleston.

Jean was born at Elkins on Sept. 3, 1929 to the late Floyd and Ethel Miller. She moved to Charleston in1946 where she lived most of her life until she moved to Sevierville, Tenn., in 1997.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dakota Elizabeth “Cody” Caudill; brother, Wilbur Miller; sister, Betty Waller; brother, Dail Miller; sister, Lucille Gum; and grandson, David Dieffenbaugh.

She is survived by a daughter, Billie Jeanne Peattie of Dandridge, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Cathie Anneliese Dieffenbaugh of Sevierville, Tenn.; sisters, Waneta Doyle and Marie Hammer of Elkins; and brother, Bob Miller of Elkins.

Myron D. Zirkle

Myron Douglas Zirkle, 65, of Buckhannon, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2008, at his home.

He was born June 4, 1942, at Alton, the son of the late Loren O. and Carrie Wayt Zirkle.

He is survived by his wife, Edith M. Newman Zirkle; a son, Myron Douglas Zirkle II of Buckhannon; a granddaughter, Carmen M. Zirkle of Buckhannon; and a brother, Thomas N. Zirkle of Winchester Va.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Danford L. Zirkle.

Mr. Zirkle enjoyed hunting, fishing and treasure hunting. He was an avid archer. He had attended Marshall University and had retired as a certified podiatrist.

Elizabeth Ruth Rosencrance Swecker, 87, a resident of Huttonsville, passed away at 8:22 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2008, in the Davis Memorial Hospital.

Pauline V. Hensil

Pauline Violet Hensil of Buckhannon, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2008, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Parkersburg.

She was born Dec. 18, 1923, at Helvetia, the daughter of the late Paul Frederick and Myrtle Bowersock Suesli Koerner.

She is survived by one son, Hugh and wife, Christal Hensil, of Jane Lew; one daughter, Joyce and husband, Harold Manner, of Parkersburg; five grandchildren, Derek and wife, Rachel Manner, of Tucson, Ariz., and Eric Hensil, Brett Ann Hensil, Haley Hensil and Seth Hensil, all of Jane Lew; a great-granddaughter, Lucy Marie Manner of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Elwood Koerner of Helvetia and Morgan Pete Koerner of Buckhannon; a sister, Theresa and husband, Stanley Maienkneeht, of Sardis, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hensil was an avid gardener.?She enjoyed making quilts and had given each of her grandchildren a quilt. She was a homemaker and a member of Elkins First Church of Christ.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the funeral home with the Rev. William W. Gear

William W. Gear, 82, of West Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Raccoon Township, Pa., died Friday, April 11, 2008. His death was sudden and unexpected.

He was born at Beverly, the son of William W. “Bill” Gear and Fanny Haddix Gear.

He was a U.S. Naval veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific. He moved to Pennsylvania after being discharged from the Navy and worked as a pipefitter with LTV Steel Bi-Products. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in West Melbourne, Fla., and a member of the Woodlawn Masonic Lodge No. 672 in Aliquippa, Pa.

Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma (Slayman) Gear; a son, William M. Gear and a daughter-in-law, Kristina Donina Gear; two grandsons, William Kody Gear and Kyle Zachary Gear; and a sister, Virginia L. Fansler.

Funeral services were conducted April 13 at Wesley United Methodist Church in West Melbourne, Fla. Entombment will be conducted in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park in Rochester, Pa.  From 30 Apr 2008.

Alysha F. Williams

Alysha Faith Williams, 5-month-old daughter of Kevin D. and Elizabeth D. Waugaman Williams of Ellamore, died April 29, 2008.

She was born Nov. 30, 2007, in Randolph County.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, Thomas D. Williams at home; paternal grandparents, Thomas and Mary Williams of Buckhannon; maternal grandmother, Betty Cutlip of Moundsville and maternal grandfather, Bill Hoover of Elkins; and aunts and uncles, David and Becky Williams, Kathy and Mark Vance, Angie and Tim Kimble, Diana Williams and Travis Currence, Betsy and Justin Martin, Patty Fisher, Misty and Jamie Greene, Penny Cutlip, Tracy Cutlip and Chad Thornton, William and Crystal Hoover. She is also survived by several cousins.

Betty J. Stevenson

Betty Jean (Conner) Stevenson, 69, widow of Edward Frank Stevenson, of 512 Houston St., Staunton, Va., died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, in Ruxton Health of Staunton.

She was born April 26, 1939, at French Creek, a daughter of Lansing and Jessie (Conner) Elmer.

Mrs. Stevenson was a member of the Waynesboro Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was a very dedicated mother and grandmother. She worked many years at Blind Industries and Services of Maryland in Cumberland, Md.

In addition to her husband, who died Feb. 19, 1998, she was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Ellen Robins and a niece, Jessica Elmer.

Family members include a son, Reginald Stevenson of Staunton, Va.; four brothers, Tom, Charles and Bill Elmer, all of West Virginia and Sam Elmer of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister, Sharon Elmer of Silver Spring, Md.; four grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Deborah, and Michael; eight nieces and nephews; and a great-niece.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, May 2, in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Pastor Will Johns. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Sunset Memorial Park in Cumberland, Md.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Edith E. Dean

Edith Elaine Dean, 84, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

She was born on July 22, 1923, at Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Jason L. and Tresa E. Dean Wentz.

On April 12, 1940, she married Jesse J. Dean, who preceded her in death on March 24, 1996.

Mrs. Dean is survived by seven daughters, Lucille Wilfong, Twila Moreland, Carol J. Sothen and husband, Carl, Glenda J Wright and husband, Kenneth, Darlene Dean , Luella J. Saffle and husband, Terry, and Kenna M. Everson and husband, Joe, all of Buckhannon; two sons, Jesse Dean and wife, Becky, and Lawrence Dean and wife, Sherry, all of Buckhannon; 26 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one sister, Emogene Ritter of Harmony, Pa.; two brothers, Glen Wentz and wife, Mary Rose, of Freedom, Pa., and Roger Wentz and wife, Georgann, of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Roberta Wentz of Ambridge, Pa., and Judy Timney of Buckhannon; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Shirley Cleavenger of Buckhannon.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Nila Dean; one sister, Pauline Elbon; and two brothers, Richard and Victor Wentz.

Mrs. Dean was a cook for the Upshur County Board of Education. She enjoyed bowling, both as a bowler and a spectator. She enjoyed watching “Wings of Faith” on Sunday mornings.

Ellizabeth Swecker

Elizabeth Ruth Rosencrance Swecker, 87, a resident of Huttonsville, passed away at 8:22 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 14, 1920, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Robert Lee Rosencrance and Rozella Tacy Rosencrance.

On March 24, 1941, at Winchester, Va., she was married to Gail Raymond Swecker, who preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 2004.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Linger and husband, Russell, of Huttonsville; one grandson, Russell Linger III and wife, Cindy, of Huttonsville; two great-grandchildren, Russell Linger IV and Alice Elizabeth Linger of Huttonsville; and three sisters, Mary Frances Folks of Elkins, Dorothy Wamsley and husband, Arling, and Faye Channell, all of Huttonsville.

Mrs. Swecker was a homemaker and part time employee of Myles Lumber Co. She was a member of the John Hart Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star , a lifelong member of the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church at Becky’s Creek and a member of the Women of the Church.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. On Friday, May 2, she will be moved to the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church at Becky’s Creek where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. Genevieve Hamrick

Genevieve Lenore Markley Hamrick, 85, a former resident of Valley Bend, and more recently a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center departed this life early Wednesday morning, April 30, 2008 in the nursing home.

She was born, Friday, April 27, 1923, at Valley Bend, a daughter of the late Nellie Markley Chidester and Denver Cutright.

On Nov. 9, 1940, at Elkins, she was married to Kenneth Leroy Hamrick, who preceded her in death May 5, 1992.

Surviving are three half brothers, Jack Cutright of Morgantown, John Edward Cutright of Arizona, and Danny Cutright of Tennessee; three half sisters, Martha Wamsley of Mingo, Sue Shary of Indiana, and Mary Jo Hevener of Wheeling; one stepsister, Nancy Chidester Burge of Terra Alta; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She attended the schools of Randolph County, had worked at the Elkins Motor Lodge for 12 years, Kay’s Motel for 17 years and retired from the Bata Shoe Co. at Beverly. She attended the Methodist Church at Valley Bend and enjoyed cooking and gardening.

Gladys I. Ketterman

Gladys Irene Arnold Ketterman, 86, a resident of Montrose, and more recently a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home of Thomas, departed this life Wednesday morning, April 30, 2008, in the nursing home.

She was born Monday, Nov. 28, 1921, at Porterwood, a daughter of the late Cecil Marcellas Arnold and Rosella Kathryn Poling Arnold.

On Feb. 10, 1940, at Parsons, she was married to Wilson Paul “Buck” Ketterman, who preceded her in death during 1972.

Surviving are one son, Kenneth Dale Ketterman and wife, Faye, of Old Fort, N.C.; five stepgrandchildren, Mike and Frank Watring, James Bingham, Thomas Bingham and Donna Bingham, all of N.C.

Preceding her in death was one sister, Joann Rose Hedrick.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1940. She was a former employee of the Kingsford Charcoal Co., the Tucker County Hospital and during 1971, she retired from the former Dorman Mills. She was a member of the St. Johns United Methodist Church of Parsons. She loved to bowl, receiving many trophies, and she was an avid reader.

Sybil J. Miller

Sybil Jean Champe Miller, 83, of Lancaster, peacefully passed away in her sleep, Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Crestview Manor Nursing Home.

She was born on July 22, 1924, at Ury, a daughter of the late K.B. and Aileen (Hendrick) Champe.

Sybil received her bachelor’s degree from Concord College in Athens and her master’s degree at the West Virginia University in Morgantown. She taught school in West Virginia, Rhode Island and Ohio. She finished her career at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon retiring after teaching for more than 20 years.

She was a member of the American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters and a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Home Economics Honor Society Cardinal Key Honor Society.

She is survived by her grandson, Cameron G.M. Beckett of New Knoxville; granddaughter, Lynda M. Beckett, of Lancaster; son-in-law, Roger A. Beckett of New Knoxville and his mother and Sybil’s caregiver, Linda Bieber, of Lancaster; and her cousin, Patsy McClung Downey of San Clemente, Calif. She was beloved by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her only daughter, Dr. Jennifer Miller-Beckett; her daughter’s father, Edward C. Miller; one sister, Freda Champe Elkins; and a cousin, Wanda Groves.

A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, in The Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 1920 W. Fair Ave., Lancaster, with Pastor Diana Gugel officiating. Cremation has taken place and internment will be in Lebannon Cemetery in Pickaway Community near Ronceverte at a later date. Jack D. Buckner

Jack D. Buckner, 81, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at his home.

He was born Dec. 5, 1926, at Cincinnati, Ohio, a son of the late Asa “Jack” Buckner and Alta Mildred Hiser Buckner Mullins.

On Nov. 18, 1967, he married Marie Walls, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Ben Buckner of Irvine, Calif.; one daughter, Teresa Cutright and husband, Alvin, of French Creek; two grandsons, Ethan and Owen Cutright, both of French Creek; one granddaughter, Julia Cutright of French Creek; two stepsisters, Rose Livesay of Englewood, Ohio, and Lou Mullins of Mt. Vernon, Ky.; hunting and fishing buddy, Bob Retterbush of Piqua, Ohio, who kept him out of trouble; and several close cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Jim Mullins.

Mr. Buckner was a postal supervisor for U.S. Postal Service and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He loved horse racing, poker, fishing, tennis and was an artist.

James Baughman

James Ralph “J.B.” Baughman, 68, of Route 2, Philippi, died, Thursday, May 1, 2008, at the home of his sister, Barbara Moran at Route 2, Belington. He had been ill since November and his death was attributed to cancer.

He was born March 25, 1940, at Philippi, a son of the late Gonzalio Dee and Jessie Pearl (Himes) Baughman.

Survivors include a sister, Barbara Ann Moran of Belington; one niece, Nancy A. Noell of Philippi; two nephews, Joseph B. Summerfield and David Lee Summerfield, both of Belington; four grandnieces and four grandnephews; two great-grandnieces and two great-grandnephews; and special friends, Lindsey Yocum and Julia Canfield.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jo Baughman; and by one nephew, James Dee Summerfield.

Mr. Baughman was a retired heavy equipment mechanic. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Laurel Mountain Post 410 Veterans of Foreign Wars at Belington. He was a Protestant by faith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. The Rev. Bryan Headley will officiate and interment will follow in Marsh Graveyard at Cross Roads where Barbour County Post 44 American Legion will confer military rites.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, on Sunday.

Patricia L. McKnight, 75, of Buckhannon, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at her home.

She was born Aug. 1, 1932, at Copen, a daughter of the late Archie and Naomi Davis Kuhl.

On Sept. 10, 1951, she married William E. McKnight, who survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Debra Hupp and husband, Tom, of Buckhannon, Aleece Williams and husband, Dale, of Buckhannon, Twila Heffelfinger and husband, Rich, of Charleston and Marsha Gregory and husband, Ron, of Buckhannon; three granddaughters, Tiffany Kitzmiller of Baltimore, Md., Samantha Gregory of Buckhannon and Heather Earl of Charleston; four grandsons, Justin Williams of Buckhannon, Brock and Blake Heffelfinger, both of Charleston and Jamison Hupp of Knoxville, Tenn.; one sister, Wanda Pratt and husband, Kenneth, of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, David Kuhl and wife, Marge, of Ohio and Harold Kuhl and wife, Vicki, also of Ohio; brother-in-law, Byron McKnight and wife, Deloris, of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Brooks; and one brother, Duaine Kuhl.

Mrs. McKnight was a homemaker, a Baptist by faith, a member of the First Nighters Bowling League, Buckhannon Jay-cettes and Senior Center Bridge Club.

Paul M. Crites

As Mr. Crites’ family members gathered around his bedside and serenaded him with gospel songs, Jesus, too, was walking around his beside and took Paul M. Crites by the hand and led him into Glory Land at 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at the residence of his son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Treasea, who had been his caretakers since 2000.

He was born on Nov. 10, 1919, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Garland H. and Mary Cutright Crites.

On Sept. 21, 1941, at the residence of Mr. Crites’ grandparents, Fay and Zona McCue Crites, he married Bertha Elnora Hyre, who preceded him in death on June 25, 2000.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his two infant brothers; his eldest son, Edwin Glen Crites; and granddaughters, Paula Kay Morgan and Melissa Crites Butler.

He is survived by one son, Tom Crites and wife, Treasea Wagoner of Glady Fork; two daughters, Paulette and husband, Robert Bellott, of Arlington, Va., and Marcia and husband, Joe Shipman, of Glady Fork; one sister, Helen Crites Neely of the Holbrook Nursing Home in Buckhannon; six grandsons, Bill Morgan of Columbus, Ohio, Rick Morgan, Joey Shipman, Scott Crites, Jeff Shipman and Glen Crites, all of Buckhannon; two granddaughters, Evlyn Crites McClean of French Creek and Tiffaney Wagoner Carpenter of Buckhannon; great-grandchildren, Dave and Dallas Butler of Bridgewater, Va., Christian and Gracie Morgan of Columbus, Ohio, Logan and Levi Carpenter of Buckhannon, Clinton Crites of French Creek, Joseph Shipman III of Glady Fork, and Hunter Shipman and Tyler Coffin of Glady Fork; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mr. Crites retired in 1982 and had previously worked as a dairy farmer, oil rig worker and worked in the maintenance department of West Virginia Wesleyan College. He was a member of the Rocky Ford United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Rabbit Beagle Club and Coon Club.

Roy G. Poling

Roy Grover Poling, 65, a resident of Hambleton, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday afternoon, April 30, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown following surgery; however, death was unexpected.

He was born Friday, Jan. 29, 1943, at Mt. Zion, a son of the late Stanley G. Poling and Addie B. Pifer.

On Sept. 27, 1963, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Rosie Barr, who preceded him in death during 1987. On June 27, 1987, at Parsons,  he was married to Laura Stone McCrum, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Ronald Dale Poling and Sandra of Mt. Zion; four daughters, Roberta Jean Thompson and Henry of Parsons, Rebecca Ann White and Charles of Holly Meadows, Sandra Lynn Summerfield and Glenn of Hambleton and Amie Sue McCrum of Parsons; one brother, Guy Poling and Midge of Maryland; four sisters, Dona Alkire and Roy of Parsons, Sylvia Meadows of Mt. Zion, and Faye Jackson and Ray, Dottie Seymour and Don, all of Maryland; one brother-in-law, Jim Southerland; eight grandchildren, Brandy, Cassandra, Henry, Sabrina, Canan, Jenna, Cheyenne and William; and one great-granddaughter, Olivia.

Preceding him in death were three brothers, Willis, Charles and Robert Poling; and one sister, Pauline Southerland.

Roy attended the school at Mt. Zion. He worked for the West Virginia Division of Highways, the Parsons Tannery and retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 2003. He was a noted mason. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed attending 4-wheeler races and spending time with his family and friends.

Sheila K. Byrd

Sheila K. Byrd, 43, of Volga, the Hodgesville Community, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.

She was born Jan. 10, 1965, in Upshur County, a daughter of Charles G. and Phyllis Beam Wamsley of Buckhannon.

On Aug. 17, 1982, she married David Byrd who survives.

Also surviving are one brother, Randy Wamsley and wife, Luz, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; several aunts, uncles, cousins and special uncle Bob Tenney; father and mother-in-law, Don and Barbara Boyd of Hodgesville; sisters-in-law, Kimberly Gifford and husband, Russ, of Hodgesville and Phyllis Bailey of Hodgesville; a niece, Jennifer Ervin and husband, Scott, of Hodgesville; two nephews, Cameron Ervin and Chad Gifford, both also of Hodgesville; and a special family and their children, Ron and Amy Pearson of Buckhannon.

Sheila was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Ray Wamsley.

Sheila was a caregiver for children for 26 years, a member of the Sand Run Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher  for elementary children. She loved children and was a devoted and loving wife.

Thelma M. Rowan

Thelma M. Rowan, 77, a resident of Mabie, passed away at 5:01 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born Jan. 9, 1931, at Mabie, a daughter of the late Rufus C. and Rebecca J. Shreve Watson.

On April 25, 1952, she was united in marriage to Harry E. “Gene” Rowan, who survives at their home in Mabie.

Surviving are three children, Gloria “Jeanie” Lantz and husband, David, Randall Rowan and wife, Jane, and Gary Rowan and wife, Cathy, all of Mabie; six grandchildren, Michelle Barb and husband, Joe, of Elkins, Barbara Lantz of Morgantown, Rhonda Haurell and husband, Dewayne, of Virginia, Jason Rowan and wife, Heather, of Mabie, Gary Rowan and fiancee, Reka,  of White Sulphur Springs and Jeremy Rowan and wife, Nicole, of Elkins; and three great-grandchildren, Noah, Cameron and Caden Rowan. Also surviving are three sisters, Ruby George and husband, Ronald, Ruth Moore and husband, Roy, and Edna Shockey and husband, Neal, all of Mabie; one brother, Thomas R. Watson and wife, Wanda, of Southington, Ohio; and her beloved cat, Snowball.

Preceding her in death besides her parents were four brothers, Willard, Clifford, Howard and John Watson; and three sisters, Edith Ratliff, Anna Currence and infant, Rebecca Watson.

Thelma attended the schools of Randolph County and graduated from Coalton High School with the class of 1949. She was a member of the Rowan Memorial United Methodist Church at Mabie and also attended the Harrison Community Church.
