Allan C. Glasscock

Allan C. Glasscock, 61, of Meadow Ridge, Petersburg, died March 1, 2008, at his home.

He was born Feb. 15, 1947, at Morgantown, a son of the late John C. Glasscock and Beulah Beatty Glasscock.

On Sept. 8, 1975, he was married to Sandria Glasscock, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jennifer and husband, Kick Moyers of Harrisonburg, Va., and Heather and husband, Charlie Yakubow of Petersburg; and two grandchildren, Jonathan Allan Moyers and Allee Yakubow.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John C. Glasscock II.

Mr. Glasscock retired from the Division of Natural Resources in 2003 as a wildlife biologist and national forest coordinator. He was also owner/operator of Bowhunters Corner for 27 years. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Petersburg, a charter member of Potomac Valley Archery Association, a member of the National Rifle Association, National Archery Association, Wild Turkey Federation and a board member of Friends of Spring Run Wild Trout.

The family received friends Sunday at Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home with the Rev. Roger Harrison officiating. Ethel M. Snyder

Ethel M. Snyder, 89, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 28, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

Mrs. Snyder was born May 22, 1918, at Cherry Grove, the daughter of the late Minor and Martha Vandevander Hedrick.

Mrs. Snyder was a member of Pine Grove Church of the Brethren. She was a seamstress and along with her husband, Kerth, was owner and operator of Snyder Taxidermy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kerth Snyder; two sisters, Fannie Tingler and Goldie Smith; and one brother, Jim Hedrick.

Surviving are six children, Imogene Simmons and husband, James, of Fairport Harbor, Ohio, Guinevere Ratliff and husband, Erby, of Mentor, Ohio, Charles Snyder and wife, Mary, of Cass, Douglas Snyder and wife, Connie, of Morgantown, Lewis Snyder and wife, Gina, of Greenville, S.C., and Molly Loraine Hammersley and husband, Jake, of Haymarket, Va.; and 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. A special thanks to Mrs. Snyder’s caregiver, Janet Mallow.

Goldie (Vance) Huffman, 91, of Petersburg, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, in Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

James P. Whetzel

James Paul Whetzel, 60, a resident of Route 4, Mt. Liberty community, Philippi, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, in Broaddus Hospital

He was born March 10, 1947, at Cumberland, Md., a son of the late Paul and Madeline (Bradford) Whetzel.

He was united in marriage Jan. 17, 1969 to Shirley Ann (Booth) Whetzel, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Rick and wife, Heather Whetzel, of Norfolk, Va., and Tom and wife, Jennifer Whetzel, of Philippi; one sister, Betty Ann and husband, George Cannon, of Burlington; one brother, Johnny Whetzel of Moorefield and the late Nancy Whetzel; and four grandchildren, Alley, Christopher, Cameron and Emma.

Mr. Whetzel was preceded in death by one infant sister.

Mr. Whetzel worked as a correctional officer at Tygart Valley Regional Jail. He also worked and assisted at Poling’s Store. Mr. Whetzel served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 44, Fraternal Order of Police and Mt. Liberty Community Association where he served as treasurer. Mr. Whetzel was a member of Barbour Church of Christ where he served as a deacon.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, March 4, until 11 a.m., the service hour with Evangelist PJ Oates officiating. Katherine Domeny

Katherine Louise Maley Domeny, 89, a 45-year resident of Seabrook, Md., and more recently a resident of Haskins Street, Junior, departed this life late Friday evening, Feb. 29, 2008, at her home.

She was born Tuesday, June 18, 1918, at Barbours, Pa., a daughter of the late James Elmer Maley and Pearl Louise Shriner Maley.

On Sept. 23, 1938, at Arlington, Va., she was married to Floyd Lester Domeny, who preceded her in death during 1978.

Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Domeny Row and husband, Mike, of Elkins and Betty Jean Greene and husband, Ed, of San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Lillian Grey of LaPorte, Pa; six grandchildren, Beverly, David, Michael, Ann, Michael and Leslie; 14 great-grandchildren, Wade, Corrie, Britany, Kellen, Kate, Kyle, Nina, Noah, Cody, Sidnee, Shelbee, Alex, Vinny and Makayla; and two great-great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Oceana.

Preceding her in death were three brothers, John, Harold and Jim Maley; six sisters, Olive, Edna, Edith, Mildred, Florence, Nellie; and two infants.

She was a graduate of Loyalsock Township High School in Pennsylvania and was a member of West Lanham Hills Baptist Church at Maryland. She was a career Navy officer’s wife, traveling extensively. She was an avid train enthusiast and was very proud of her Irish heritage.

Lawrence Bartlett

Lawrence Flay “Bud” Bartlett, 85, a resident of Route 3, Mansfield Addition, Philippi, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, in United Hospital Center.

He was born Aug. 28, 1922, in Barbour County, a son of the late Amer Flay and Hazel C. (Kerr) Bartlett.

He is survived by his former wife, Evelyn Ruth (Condri) Bartlett.

Also surviving are one daughter, Tamela Jo and husband, Randall Scott Harvey, of Buckhannon; one brother, Dale Bartlett of Philippi and the late Dottie Bartlett; and one granddaughter, Brionna Lise Harvey.

Mr. Bartlett was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Wright and Doalyn Tansill.

Mr. Bartlett was a carpenter. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, also in the European Theater and European conflict. Mr. Bartlett was a member of American Legion Post 44 and Grafton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3081.

Leonard Linton Lambert, 82, of Arbovale, passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at his home.

William R. Andrews

William Richard Andrews, 69, a resident of the Blackman Heights Community, Parsons, departed this life Saturday evening, March 1, 200, in Tucker Community Care. Death was attributed to cardiac arrest.

He was born Saturday, Aug. 13, 1938, at Coshocton, Ohio, a son of the late Edward Andrews and Nora Hersh.

On Dec. 18, 1978, at Canton, Ohio, he was married to the former Daisy Mae Riley, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Andy Andrews of Parsons and Adam Andrews of Valley Bend; one daughter, Tammy White of Ohio; one half sister, Joyce; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Aaron Riley Andrews; and one grandchild, Charles Arthur White.

He attended the schools of Ohio. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a truck driver and he was a motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed watching wrestling.

Mr. Andrews request for cremation was honored. At a later date, a graveside service will be conducted in Parsons City Cemetery where full military rites will be accorded by the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post 647 Veterans of Foreign War will conduct full military rites. John L. Daniels

John Lowell Daniels, 77, a resident of Beverly, and for the past two months, a resident of Valentine’s Personal Care Home at Beverly, departed this life Sunday morning, March 2, 2008, in the nursing home. He had fought a courageous battle with Parkinson’s; however, death was sudden and unexpected.

He was born Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1930, at Files Creek Road in Beverly, a son of the late Henry Harper Daniels and Vie Ellen Isner Daniels.

On Sept. 2, 1956, at Elkins, he was married to the former Carol Edwina Erickson, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Stephen Lowell Daniels and wife, Lori, of Beverly; two brothers, Warren Thomas Daniels of Elkins and Dale Harper Daniels of Beverly; two sisters, Mildred Ervin of Hollywood, Md., and Anna Marie Kittle of Elkins; two granddaughters, Hannah and Heidi, both of Beverly; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Ralph Arnold and Charles Daniels; and four sisters, Opal Ash, Iva Irene Vanscoy, Gertrude Kyle and Willajean Hamrick.

Mr. Daniels had attended a one-room schoolhouse on Files Creek Road at Beverly, was a graduate of Beverly High School with the class of 1947 and had received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy having served from 1950 to 1954 as an electrician’s mate 3rd class, USN-1 on the island of Guam in the South Pacific during the Korean Conflict. He was employed as a crane rigger at Red Bank, N.J., during 1949 and with Monongalia Power Co. at Elkins as a right of way laborer in 1950. After his discharge from the Navy, he worked as an installation serviceman for Cupp’s Electric and Furniture Co. at Elkins from 1954 to 1956. In 1957, he was a dry kiln operator and lumberyard foreman for Tygart Moulding Corp. at Beverly, a labor supervisor and high lift operator at Elkins Independent Development Corp. and became employed as a rough mill foreman at Metallab Labcraft Corp. at Beverly. In December 1968, he became the mill manager for Union Fork and Hoe Inc. at Beverly and retired during 1994 after 26 years of service. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, was an avid hunter and had attended First Baptist Church at Elkins. In his retirement, Mr. Daniels enjoyed antique collecting, farming, gardening, his Black Angus cattle and hunting wild game, especially with his son, Stephen.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 p.m. to 8p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Wednesday, March 5, at 11a.m.. The Rev. John R. Nelson

John R. Nelson, 62, an entrepreneur who built a multi-state telecommunication company, departed this life Saturday, March 1, 2008, in North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville, Fla. Death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Thursday, Aug. 16, 1945, at Elkins, a son of the late John G. Nelson and Sarah Nelson, well known Elkins residents. His maternal grandparents were S.B. and Grace Haffner of Elkins and his fraternal grandparents were Parsons and Laura Nelson of Beverly.

He is survived by Bonnie Kees Nelson, his wife of 40 years; a son, John Nicholas Nelson and his wife, Ann, all of Gainesville, Fla.; a sister, Jenny Nelson Phillips and husband, Bill, of Elkins; and two nephews, John Nelson Gunning of Fairmont and Scott E. Gunning of Atlanta, Ga.

He graduated from Elkins High School in 1963 and attended Shepherd College in Shepherdstown. Following college he entered banking and later the retail business in Buckhannon. In 1989, he established Central Services Group Inc. based in Gainesville, Fla. He founded Ring9, a company that provides telephone services over the Internet, in 2003. He served as president and chief executive officer of both firms. At the time of his death he was retired.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be conducted Thursday, March 6, at 1:30 p.m. at the West Area Williams Thomas Funeral Home at Gainesville, Fla. A graveside service will be scheduled in Elkins at a later date. Patricia A. Ball

Patricia Ann Ball, 34, a resident of Elkins, departed this life early Monday morning, March 3, 2008 at her home. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected.

She was born Tuesday, June 12, 1973, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Maynard Ball and Linda Cobb Ball, who survives.

She was raised by Bonnie and Eugene Riffe since age 14.

Surviving are three sisters, Mary Alice Weese and husband, David, Marsha Ann Lester and husband, Dennis, and Melisa Jackson, all of Elkins; two grandmothers, Mary Alice Howell of Elkins and Edna Harlan of Norton; one aunt, Debbie Jones of Elkins; two uncles, David Jackson of Norton and Kenneth Howell of Elkins; one niece, Alayna Lester; one nephew, David Eugene Green; and several cousins.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1993, was a member of Harmony Worship Center at Elkins, was an avid NASCAR enthusiast, and she loved animals, scary movies, and coffee. Patty was loved by everybody who knew her, and she will be sadly missed.

Gordon B. White

Helen K. Hollen

Helen Kathleen Hollen, 79, a resident of Chestnut Street (Baughman Towers) and a former resident of Maple Avenue, Philippi, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at her residence.

She was born June 22, 1928, a daughter of the late Muldrew and Elsie (Cutlip) Bennett.

She was united in marriage Dec. 26, 1946, to Kyle Hollen, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Mark and wife, Eloise Hollen, of Valley Furnace, Jeff and wife, Shelley Hollen, of Belington and Joel and wife, Becki Hollen, of Elkins; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hollen was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Hollen retired from the Myers Clinic as a nurse’s aide. She was a member of the Philippi Baptist Church.

James D. Carr

James Dean Carr, 47 of Maysville, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at his residence.

Josephine Summerfield

Josephine F. Summerfield, 84, a resident of New Castle, Del., passed away Feb. 5, 2008.

She was born at Valley Head, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Arbogast Snyder.

She was married to Wilson M. Summerfield, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are three children, David Summerfield and wife, Susan, Kevin Summerfield and wife, Sheila, and Martha Smith and husband, Roger; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Billy Snyder and wife, Rowena, John Snyder and wife, Donna, and Wendell Snyder; and a sister, Dora Kaufman.

Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Rita Jean Summerfield; a son, Larry S. Summerfield; and a brother, Kenneth Snyder.

Mrs. Summerfield was previously employed at Topkis Brothers in Wilmington, Del., and the John Leach School in New Castle, Del.

A funeral service was conducted on Feb. 11, 2008, with interment following in the Silverbrook Cemetery in Delaware. Noel E. Morrison

On Tuesday, March 4, 2008, Noel Earl Morrison, 88, of Elkins, departed this life to be with the Lord.

Born on April 26, 1919, in Elkins, he was the son of the late Bertie Ray Morrison and the late Martha Jane Vanscoy Morrison.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marion Ruth Morrison, and is survived by his second wife, Mary Margaret Morrison. Also surviving are one son, Roy Dale Morrison and wife, Jeanie, of Elkins; two daughters, Jean Ann Bush of Lancaster, Ohio, and Joy Skinner and husband, Ken, of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister; and numerous nieces and nephews, stepsons and stepdaughters including Donnie Woodward and Dustie of Clifton Forge, Va., Sue Royster and Bob of New Bern, N.C., Bob Woodward and Virginia and Phil Woodward and Donna of Fanwood, N.J., and Kay Royster and Dick of Hampton, Va.

During World War II, Mr. Morrison was a staff sergeant. in the U.S. Army, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was wounded during the invasion of Holland and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was a loving and generous husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family. Mr. Morrison was renowned as a skilled and gifted carpenter and the results of his labors could be viewed throughout the surrounding area. He was a devoted Methodist by faith, who loved his faith selflessly.

He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church and until his recent illness, attended both the Otterbein United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Friday, March 7, he will be moved to the First United Methodist Church where a funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley and the Rev. Michael Richards will officiate and interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman where full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite by members of H.W. Dr. Robert Ellwood Whitmoyer, 84, of Athens, Ga., died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008.

Garnet I. Roberts

Garnet Irene Roberts, 82, of Buckhannon, died Monday, March 3, 2008, in Holbrook’s Nursing Home at Buckhannon.

She was born Oct. 13, 1925, at Frenchton, a daughter of the late Ira Heavner and Edna Tolliver Heavner.

On Oct. 29, 1946, she was married to Ira Pearl Roberts, who preceded her in death March 18, 1963.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Roberts of San Diego, Calif.; one son, Raymond N. Roberts of Polk City, Fla.; two brothers, Faye Heavner of Ireland and Thomas Heavner of Diamond, Ohio; two sisters, Cletus Marsh of Akron, Ohio, and Juanita Nuzum of Buckhannon; and two grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, James Heavner, Basil Heavner and Burton Heavner; and three sisters, Pearl Heavner, Billie Gregory and Avis Brimlow.

She was a waitress and Methodist by faith.

Gordon Benjamin White Sr., 81, a well-known educator of Randolph County and a resident of Captiol Street in Elkins, departed this life early Sunday morning, March 2, 2008, at the Davis Memorial Hospital.

Junior Rosencrance

Junior N. Rosencrance, 78, a resident of Verona, Va., passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at his home in Verona, Va.

He was born Jan. 9, 1930, at Huttonsville, a son of the late Novel Wilson and Addie Bell Tacy Rosencrance.

He was married to Patricia Walden Rosencrance, who survives at Verona.

Also surviving are a son, Dennis N. Rosencrance of Worcester, Mass.; two daughters, Vickie Spitzer and husband, Keith, of Staunton, Va., and Paula Allen and fiance, John Reedy, of Greenville, Va.; two brothers, Warren Rosencrance of Huttonsville and Elwood Rosencrance and wife, Erma, Salisbury, Md.; a sister, Ruby Bennett and husband, Roger, of Elkins; grandchildren, Jeramy and Karen Spitzer, Aaron and Carmen Spitzer, Ryan Spitzer and Nicole Allen and fiance, Jeremy Folmar; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Spitzer and Kaitlyn Spitzer; and a special friend, Ron Dion.

Also preceding him in death were four brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Rosencrance was employed as an insurance agent for Peoples Life and Monumental Life Insurance companies prior to his retirement. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Kirk S. Helmick

Kirk Steven Helmick, 33, former resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of Mannington, departed this life Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at his home. Death was attributed to cardiac arrest.

He was born Thursday, Oct. 17, 1974, at Fort Hood, Texas, a son of Ralph Junior Helmick, who survives at Bretz and Karin Ute Wurfel Helmick, who preceded him in death Nov. 28, 2000.

On Sept. 5, 1998, at Job, he was married to the former Magan Ann Kisamore, who survives at Mannington.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kendra Lianne Helmick and Aliyah Karin Danielle Helmick, both at home in Mannington; two brothers, Mike Ronald Helmick of Ohio, and Andy Ralph Helmick of Hendricks; one sister, Birgit Cummons and husband, Steve, of Ohio; one stepsister; Kelsey Markle of Parsons; his paternal grandmother, Pauline Carr of Dry Fork; his father-in-law, Daniel Kisamore of Mannington; two brothers-in-law, Jacob and Leigh Kisamore, both of Mannington; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his paternal grandfather, Ralph Helmick; his paternal stepgrandfather, Lewis Carr,and his mother-in-law, Laurie Chambers Kisamore.

He was a graduate of Tucker County High School with the class of 1993. He was a former employee of the Colonial Millworks at Beverly. He was currently working as a lawn care specialist and snow removal for Yoder’s at Morgantown. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to spend time with his family.

Brent Freeman II

Brent Mason Freeman II, 71, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, March 6, 2008.

He was born Jan. 5, 1947, at Buckhannon, the son of the late Brent Mason Freeman and Virginia “Ginny Mae” Kesling Freeman.

On March 9, 1968, he was married to Joyce L. Lesondak Freeman, who survives at Buckhannon.

Also surviving are three daughters, Kristen Williams and husband, Jamie, of Somerdale, Ohio, Alicia Hodges and husband, Judd, of Buckhannon and Heather Cogar and husband, Jeff, of French Creek; one granddaugher, Sarah Williams of Somerdale, Ohio; two grandsons, Benjamin Cogar and Bryce Cogar of French Creek; and one brother, Lee Paul Freeman of Tennerton.

He was a driller with Union Drilling and Methodist by faith.

Manila M. Yokum

Manila “Nellie” Matilda Yokum, 72, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 6, 1932, at Adolph, a daughter of the late Thomas and Fannie Wegman Barrickman.

In 1952, she was married to Richard Junior Yokum, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, Keith Lynn Yokum and wife, Lorrain, of Huttonsville and Douglas “Speck” Yokum and wife, Angie, of Mill Creek; and two stepsons, Richard Yokum and wife, Paula, of Poolsville, Md., and David Yokum and wife, Joyce, of Virginia. Two brothers, Utah Barrickman and wife, Beatrice, of Adolph and Kendall Barrickman of Elizabethtown, Tenn.; one sister, Silvy Hayhurst of Mill Creek; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

Preceding her in death were three brother, Sib, Skippie and Henry David Barrickman; and four sisters, Decota Varnado, Carrie Kelly, Louise Rinaldi and Elsie Barrickman.

Mrs. Yokum was retired from Randolph County Schools where she worked for many years as a teacher’s aid. She was an active member of Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.

Charles R. Sheets, 64, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at his home.

He was born July 31, 1943, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Charles and Erma E. Robinson Sheets.

On April 11, 1969, he married Dorothy A. DeBarr, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jill Ann Wood and husband, David, of Weston and Ginger Himes and husband, Martin, of Buckhannon; three sons, Rodney Lee Sheets of South Hill, Va., Nick Sheets and wife, Kim, of Tennessee and Mike Kelley and wife, Melanie, of Buckhannon; three grandsons, Michael Kelley and wife, Carissa, of Buckhannon, Tyler Wood of Weston and Cameron Sheets of South Hill; four granddaughters, Jennifer Hatfield and husband, Billy, of Buckhannon, Leslie Sheets of Buckhannon, Elizabeth Sheets of Buckhannon and Teshia Williams of Elkins; one great-granddaughter, Helena Hatfield of Buckhannon; three brothers, Ronald Sheets of Buckhannon, Jimmy Sheets of Jane Lew and Danny Sheets of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sheets was an assistant supervisor for the Division of Highways and a member of Tallmansville Baptist Church.

Marian J. Zinn

Marian Josephine “Jo” Zinn, 97, a resident of Charleston Gardens Assisted Living Community for the past three years in Charleston, and a former resident of Philippi, died March 7, 2008, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

She was born Sept. 4, 1910, at Philippi, the daughter of the late Herbert Maurice Crawford and Anna Lou Ella (Smith) Crawford.

She was united in marriage to Delfon Zinn, who preceded her in death in 1975.

Surviving family members are her son, David Zinn and wife, Chris, of Charleston; daughter-in-law, Joyce Zinn of South Charleston; grandchildren, Christopher Zinn and wife, Sharon, of Rockville, Md., Jody Zinn of South Charleston, Wendy Lukitsch and husband, Paul, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Gina Zinn and husband, Jay Barr, of Pasadena, Md., Tracy Zinn and husband, Bryan Saville, of Harrisonburg, Va., Hamish Lewis and wife, Erin, of Troy, Mich., Heather Lewis of Troy, Mich., Gareth Lewis of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Corey Zinn of Charleston. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews, Carol Cassidy of Kansas City, Kan., Lou Ann Crawford of Cleveland and Lumberton, N.C., and David Crawford of Louisville, Ky.

Mrs. Zinn was preceded in death by one son, Philip Crawford Zinn; two sisters, Emily Crawford Cassidy and Ruth Crawford Jones; and one brother, Herbert M. “Bud” Crawford Jr.

Jo was a longtime member of the Crim Memorial United Methodist Church and a longtime member of PEO’s Chapter C in Philippi. She worked proudly for many years at the Tygart Valley Soil Conservation District. Aside from her love of family, Jo’s loves in life included watching every type of bird that flocked to the beautiful garden she cultivated, and attending West Virginia University football games and cheering the Mountaineers. She also loved golf as a player and then as a spectator in later life. She enjoyed going to the theater, and for many years traveled to New York City every spring to go to many plays with friends. Above all, she loved Philippi and the scenic covered bridge, her home and many friends there.

The family would like to extend their thanks to all the very caring staff of Charleston Gardens. The family would also like to thank Hospice Care team members Stacey Smith, Pedra Collins, Amy Greear and Terry Yahr, who provided very special care of Jo in her final months, and the staff of Hubbard House in Charleston for their loving care in her final days.

Virginia R. O'Brien

Virginia Ruth (Moore) O’Brien, an Elkins native, went home to the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, in her home in Wilder, Ky.

She was the beloved wife of the late William A. O’Brien and devoted mother of Terri (Jim) Cornwell and William “Rob” (Tess) O’Brien Esq.; loving grandmother of Amy (Kenny) Boschen, Heather (Steve) Hirlinger, Rebecca O’Brien, Will O’Brien, Sandy (Jim) Wilson, Debbie (Gary) Liacopoulos, James (Nina) Cornwell and Kimberly (Roger) Trumbull; loving great-grandmother of Matthew, Luke and Blake Boschen, Alexandre Hirlinger, Thomas James and Audrey Wilson, Stefan Liacopoulos, Isabella and James Cornwell, Ashley, Allyson and Roger Trumbull; dear sister of John, Harry, and Don Moore; and sister-in-law of Catherine O’Brien Calain (Erv).

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers Eugene and Edward Moore.

Virginia was born at Elkins on May 2, 1924, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Elmer and Alice Moore. 

She was active in all the communities she lived in, chosen as jester to Queen Sylvia in the 1940 Forest Festival and grandmother to Queen Sylvia LXIV Rebecca O’Brien in 2000.
