strike twice in the same place!” While holding two ends of a cable in his hands,
lightning struck him twice, throwing him several feet in the air and burning the
toes out of his boots.

He interrupted his studies to serve his country with distinction as a jet fighter pilot in the Korean Conflict, obtaining the rank of Captain during his active service from 1953 through 1958. He was very proud to be a Marine and went on to serve in the reserves before finally resigning his commission to concentrate on his career in aerospace. Bill held various positions during his career at NASA, including the associate chief of the Network Operations Division where he had responsibility for the worldwide network of stations that made up GSFC’s tracking and data acquisition capability. He was very dedicated and proud to be a part of NASA and the space programs, especially the Apollo missions. Always an avid learner and reader, he furthered his education in business by attending the University of Maryland and George Washington University. He spent the latter part of his career working in the private sector with American Satellite, later Contel. There he helped to design satellites that served in advancing our communications to the state we enjoy today.\
Bill is survived by his wife Lillyan Frances Shaffer; his daughter and her husband, Jo Lynne and Gary Parsons of Midland, Mich.; his daughter, Stacie Lea Shaffer of Arlington, Va.; granddaughters, Danielle Marie and Elizabeth Ann Parsons, who so loved their “Kapa;” and sister, Joyce Norris and her husband, Richard, of Baltimore, Md.
