Gregory K. Daniels

Gregory K. Daniels, 82, of Springfield Township, Ohio, passed away Jan. 12, 2008.

Gregory was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Marion County and lived most of his life in the Akron area.

He retired from Goodyear Aerospace, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Lakemore United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by four sister and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Genny; son, Greg Daniels; daughters, Sherri (Mark) Carney and Kathy (Jim) Collett; sisters, Mary Poole and Leola Green; grandchildren, Clint, Chris, Chad and Todd; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 East Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, Ohio, with Pastor Jeff Gindlesberger officiating. Jean H. Lantz

Jean H. Lantz, 89, of Lima, Ohio, died at 2:50 a.m. Jan. 12, 2008, in The Villas at Baton Rouge, Lima, Ohio.

She was born June 12, 1918, at Elkins, the daughter of the late Alpheus H. and Nell F. Adamson Hunter.

On Sept. 16, 1939, she married Charles W. Lantz, who preceded her in death March 1, 2002.

Surviving are one son, Philip B. (Paula) Lantz; former daughter-in-law, Judith Lantz of Troy, Ohio; two brothers, Jack H. (Anita) Hunter of Ellicott City, Md., and James D. Hunter of Charleston; one sister-in-law, Ann Hunter; grandchildren; Kristin (Jamie) Penny of Trenton, Ohio, Chuck (Vicki) Lantz of St. Charles, Ill., Jon (Lori) Lantz of Arvada, Colo.; and Sarah (Mack) Ramsey of Tipp City, Ohio; and great-grandchildren; Amanda and Logan Penny, Ian and Rose Ramsay and Grace Lantz.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Charles H. Lantz; and one brother, George A. Hunter.

She retired in 1978 as a sales clerk at Gregg’s Department Store. She was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College. She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, volunteered at Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed working in her yard and visiting with her friends, neighbors and family on her porch.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Shawnee Chapel, Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Lima, Ohio. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Norma W. Altieri

Norma “Juanita” Weese Altieri, 88, a resident of Elkins, departed this life late Friday evening, Jan. 11, 2008, in United Hospital Center at Clarksburg.

She was born Friday, Nov. 14, 1919, at Beverly, a daughter of the late Grover Weese and Dovie Kerens Weese.

On Sept. 23, 1941, at Coalton, she was married to Antonio Paul “Tim” Altieri, who preceded her in death March 14, 1997.

Surviving are one son, Antonio Paul “Tony” Altieri II and wife, Mary Beth, of Morgantown; two brothers, Richard Weese of Springfield and Harold Weese and wife, Erda, of Elkins; two sisters, Ann Morrone and husband, Sam, of Fairmont and Lou Kimelblot and husband, Sherm, of California; one granddaughter, Vincenza Marie Altieri; one stepgrandson, Jake Hare; and one stepgranddaughter, Catherine Marie Hare, all of Morgantown.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Truman and Arnold Weese; and two sisters, Cleo Keller and Alma Louise Weese.

She was a graduate of Beverly High School with the class of 1937 and was a graduate of Davis Memorial Hospital School of Nursing with a degree as a registered nurse. She was a graduate of West Virginia University, where she earned her nurse anesthetist degree. She had worked for the former Memorial General Hospital and Davis Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1992 at 72 years of age. She was a homemaker and a member of Saint Brendan Catholic Church.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. On Tuesday at 7 p.m., at the funeral home, a wake service will be recited by Sister Teresa Reddington CSJ. On Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, Mrs. Altieri will be moved to Saint Brendan Catholic Church where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. The Rev. Orlena M. Cutlip

Orlena M. Cutlip, 76, a resident at St. Joseph’s Hospital Nursing Care Facility, and formerly of Hinkleville and the French Creek communities, took the hand of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008.

She was born in Nicholas County, March 30, 1931, a daughter of the late Mancle and Carrie Mullins Dotson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Paul Cutlip.

She is survived by four daughters, Rachel and Bill Robinson Sr., Candy and Terry Hinchman Sr. and Ovella M. Godfrey, all of Buckhannon and Cindy and Donald Powers of Camden, Ark.; three sons, David Cutlip of Fredericksburg, Va., Mancle Cutlip of French Creek and Ira Cutlip of Beckley; grandchildren, Adam and Adrianne Robinson, Billy Jr. and Kelly Robinson, Michael Hinchman and Regina Johnston, Scottie Hinchman, Terry “Pun” Jr. and Angie Hinchman, all of Buckhannon, Jennifer Powers and Jason Powers, both of Arkansas, Davie and Ashley Cutlip and Sheena Cutlip, all of Memphis, Tenn., and Angel Godfrey, Robert and Sharon Cutlip and April Cutlip, all of Buckhannon. Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Betty and Richard Sweney, Pearl Prathers and Billy Curry, all of Summersville, Aretta and Henry Butler of Lewisburg and Ila and Tommy Butler of Ohio; and half sister, Josie Smith of Dunbar.

She was preceded in death by one son, Ralph Cutlip; two brothers, Garland and Ralph Dotson; and one sister, Opal Dotson.

Orlena loved her children, grandchildren and her animals. She enjoyed working puzzles and enjoyed her time spent as a senior companion. She had been a senior companion at Holbrooks for five years. She attended the Liberty In Christ Church.

Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel with Pastor Mike Westfall and the Rev. Paul E. Harris

Paul Eugene “Gene” Harris, 83, a resident of Harrison Avenue, Elkins, departed this life on Jan. 12, 2008, in Colonial Place in Elkins.

He was born June 27, 1924, at Adrian, a son of the late Celia and Dewey Harris.

He was married to Mava Justine West Harris, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Melvin and his wife, Rustyne, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Philip and his wife, Ann, of Elkins. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Russell Harris of Oklahoma City, Okla., Stephanie Shelts and husband, Mike, of Oklahoma City, Okla., Andrea Black and husband, Dale, of Oklahoma City, Okla., Scott Harris and wife, Christina, of Elkins and Curtis Harris of Elkins; and six great-grandchildren.

One sister, Evelyn Nixon, preceded him in death.

He attended the schools of Upshur County and was an U.S. Army veteran having served with the 102nd Mechanized Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron in the European Theatre during World War II. He was retired from the Monongahela Power Co. with 36 years of service. Paul enjoyed outdoor activities, traveling and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3663 of Buckhannon.

The family will receive friends at Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Graveside service will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m. in Upshur County Memorial Park. The Rev. Paul R. Bunner

Paul R. Bunner, 84, of Buckhannon and formerly of Czar, passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at his home in the care of his family and aided by People’s Hospice of Clarksburg.

He was born May 9, 1923, at Czar, a son of the late Hobart H. and Anna Mae Zumbach Bunner, and was preceded in death by a brother, Blaine Hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Heater Bunner, whom he married on April 28, 1951; four daughters, Sharon Wright and husband, Rick, of Buckhannon, Brenda Shannon and husband, David, of Buckhannon; Jo Ella Wills and husband, Don, of French Creek and Peggy Hyre and husband, Marty, of Rock Cave; five grandchildren, Carrie Shannon Stark and husband, Dane, of Buckhannon, Mica Hyre of Elkins, Ruscian Hyre and wife, Melinda, of Buckhannon, Jennifer Hyre of Buckhannon and Sarah Wills of Buckhannon; two great-grandchildren, Julianna Stark and Kadyn Hyre; and two brothers, Harry Bunner of Helvetia and John Bunner of Buckhannon.

Mr. Bunner was a life member of Beech Mountain Sportsman Club in Czar, was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army and attended Pine Grove United Methodist Church at Czar. He was co-owner of Bunner Brothers Lumber Co. of Helvetia and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Robert D. Plum

Robert Denzil Plum, 74, a former resident of Tucker County and a resident of Virginia, departed this life Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, in U.V.A. Medical Center at Virginia. Death was attributed to cancer.

Ruby L. Daft

Ruby Lee Daft, 85, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at her home.

She was born March 29, 1922, at Long Run, a daughter of the late Wilbert Terry and Stacy Lee Rowan Slaughter.

On Nov. 22, 1943, she married French Alvin Daft, who preceded her in death on July 2, 2007.

She is survived by one son, Terry Daft and wife, Elsie, of Buckhannon; four grandsons, Chadwick Daft of Salem, Ohio, Bradley Daft of Buckhannon, Garrick Daft of Dublin, Ohio, and Brandon Daft of Buckhannon; two granddaughters, Celine Daft of Buckhannon and Emmie Cutright of Shinnston; three brothers, Fay Edward Slaughter of Buckhannon, Gerl Slaughter of Shinnston and Jay Morris Slaughter of Chicago, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gary Daft; two grandsons, Darr and Ronald Daft; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Daft; one brother, Buddy Slaughter; and two sisters, Geneva Slaughter and Naomi Collins.

Mrs. Daft was a homemaker.

Samuel C. Lovelace

Samuel Claude “June” Lovelace Jr., 77, went to be with the Lord Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at his home in Dunmore.

Mr. Lovelace was born June 2, 1930, in Pocahontas County, the son of the late Samuel Claude Arbogast Sr. and Juanita Pearl Arbogast.

June had served with the U.S. Marine Corps and was a saw filer for Allegheny Wood Co.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Gene Lovelace; and two infant sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Jo Hoover Lovelace; one son, Chester Lee Lovelace and wife, Sally, of Bartow; one granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Lovelace of Dunmore; and two brothers, William Floyd Lovelace of Dunmore and Leon Pershing Lovelace and his wife, Betty, of Ronceverte.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today in Dunmore United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Fuller officiating. Military graveside rites will follow in Arbovale Cemetery Annex. Thelma E. Higgins

Thelma E. Higgins, 76, a resident of Buckhannon, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at her home.

She was born Feb. 28, 1931, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Cecil Canfield and Virgie E. Weese Canfield.

On June 14, 1947, she was married to Warren W. Higgins, who preceded her in death Dec. 23, 2001.

Surviving are four sons, Terry Higgins of Chocowinity, N.C., Steve Higgins, Randy Higgins and Larry Higgins, all of New Martinsville; three daughters, Cheryl Morgan of Martinsburg, Virgie Sarver of Buckhannon and Pamela Anderson of Cincinnati, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 16 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Wilma Biller of Kerens; two half sisters, Shelby Weese of Akron, Ohio, and Patricia Bland of Berkeley Springs; and her stepmother, Blanche Johnson of Inwood.

Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Rose Marie Higgins; two brothers, Denver Canfield and Lacy Canfield; and one sister, Dolores Shannon.

She was a homemaker and a Christian by faith.

Gene D. Smith

Gene D. Smith, 68, of Lahmansville, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at his residence.

Leahbell N. Friend

Leahbell Norma “Boots” Friend, 71, of Buckhannon, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital at Weston.

She was born April 10, 1936, at Kanawha Head, a daughter of the late John Reuben Lane and Elizabeth Teresa Sims Lane.

On Dec. 3, 1955, she married Norris Verl Friend, who preceded her in death Jan. 9, 1981.

Surviving are one daughter, Becky Isenhart of Gettysburg, Pa.; two sons, Mark Friend and wife, Katherine of Buckhannon and David Friend and wife, Jennifer, of Kiel, Wis.; true companion, Tracey Segur of Buckhannon; five grandsons, Davis Friend of Morgantown, Cirk Friend of Clarksburg, Jeremy Isenhart of Milford, Del., and Jacob Friend and Joseph Friend of Kiel, Wis.; two granddaughters, LaShawn Jorrisma of Worchester, Mass., and Leah Friend of Kiel, Wis.; three great-grandsons, Austin Robinson and Foster Robinson of Worchester, Mass., and Brandon Friend of Mannington; one sister, Dortha Carroll of Glenford, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Peg Linger and Patty Smith; and three brothers, the Rev. Stick Lane, Ernest Lane and Gayle Lane.

She was a retired licensed practical nurse having worked at Holbrook’s Nursing home and attended Mt. Herman United Methodist Church. Through the years, Mrs. Friend had been the alto singer for several gospel groups throughout the area.

Mabel R. Lough

Mabel Ruth Lough, 79, of Buckhannon, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Buckhannon.

She was born Aug. 15, 1928, at Gilmer Station, a daughter of the late Virgil Spore and Ora Wilmoth Spore.

On Jan. 21, 1949, she married George Lough, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary Herndon and husband, Russell “Jack,” of Buckhannon, Judy Moore and husband, David, of Adrian and Delores Hershberger of Buckhannon; two sons, Judson Spore of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Roger Lough and wife, Arlene, of Buckhannon; five grandsons, Rusty Herndon and wife, Susie, of Buckhannon, Chris Moore of Morgantown, David Mayo of Buckhannon, Steven Hershberger and wife, Jessica, of North Carolina, and Hezekiah Spore of Akron, Ohio; three granddaughters, Brittany Herndon of Morgantown, Kayla Mayo of Weston and Tracy Galati and husband, Steve, of Akron, Ohio; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bob Spore, Bud Spore and Raymond Spore, all of Buckhannon; and two sisters, Annabell Lipps and Virgie Landers of Buckhannon.

Also preceding her in death were one son, David Lough; and one sister, Reda Lowther.

She was a cook at Maggie’s Restaurant and Pentecostal.

Nancy T. Cassell

Mrs. Nancy Taylor Cassell, 97, of Princeton and Dunmore, died peacefully at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Linda Hawkins, at Princeton on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008.

She was born May 16, 1910, at Dunmore, the daughter of the late William H. and Victoria Nottingham Taylor.

She was a homemaker, farmer and a lifelong resident of “The Homeplace” near Dunmore. Mrs. Cassell was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where she had previously served as Communion steward and teacher of the adult Sunday school class. Mrs. Cassell was a life member of Dunmore United Methodist Women.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, preceding her in death were sisters, Mrs. Nina Sheets, Mrs. Belle Wooddell, Mrs. Hallie Vanosdale, Mrs. Willie Taylor and Mrs. Sylvia Gum; and brothers, Daniel, Clarence, Kenneth and Jacob “Jack” Taylor.

Mrs. Cassell is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Linda C. Hawkins of Princeton; a nephew, whom she reared, Bill Gowan and wife, Andrea, of Tullahoma, Tenn., and their daughter, Loretta Smith and husband, Jim, of Riverview, Fla.; grandchildren, Nancy Price and husband, Steve, and their children, Seth and Hannah, and James Hawkins and wife, Mindy, and sons, Christopher and Spencer, all of Princeton; and four stepgrandchildren, who she loved as her own, Elizabeth Ball and son, Tyler, of Princeton, Jack Hawkins and wife, Peggy, and children, John and Mary Beth of Nashville, Tenn., David Hawkins of Charleston, S.C., and Bill Hawkins and wife, Patty, and their daughter, Tammy, of Winter Haven, Fla. Also left to cherish her memory are a very special relative and friend, Mrs. Katherine Garber and husband, Jim, of Dunmore and their son, Scott, of Warrensburg, N.Y., as well as many devoted and much loved nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Cassell will be conducted at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with visitation beginning at noon Wednesday, Jan. 16, followed by a memorial service st 2 p.m. with the Rev. Susan S. Helms

Susan S. Helms, 81, passed away Jan. 9, 2008, surrounded by her children.

She was born Feb. 14, 1926, at Ellamore, the daughter of the late Vincent and Bertha (Kittle) Pennington.

She grew up in Coalton, where her father had a general store.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert Simmons, and her second husband, William Helms.

She lived in Severna Park, Md., and New Smyrna Beach, Fla. She was very active in the American Legion, serving as president of the Womens Auxiliary for many years and in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving in various regional positions.

She leaves behind her children, sons, Terry Simmons and his wife, Vicki, of Rock Hill, S.C., and David Simmons and his wife, Elaine, of Bluefield; daughters, Andrea Fridy and her husband, Robert, of Felton, Pa., and Kathryn Perkins and her husband, Mark, of Dunkirk, Md.; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; and her sister, Frances Stasky of Vermillion, Ohio.

Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers, Mack, Bryan, Farren and Walter; and her sisters, June, Mona, Mary and Lillian.

In addition to her children, her greatest joy in life was returning to visit her beloved West Virginia, the memory of which she always carried in her heart.

David E. Crites

David Edwin Crites, 58, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, surrounded by his family at his home on the Alton Road.

He was born July 30, 1949, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Scott Crites and is survived by his mother, Thelma Crites of French Creek.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Jenni Christakes and her husband, Gus, and their two children, Samantha and Corey, all of Hampstead, N.C.; one sister, Deanna Young of French Creek; one nephew, John Young of French Creek; one niece, Sherry Holley and husband, Jonathan, of Hodgesville; one great-nephew, Anthony Holley and one great-niece, Shayna Holley, both of Hodgesville; also his ex-wife, Marlene Hardee of Hampstead, N.C.

Dave served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he drove school bus for the Upshur County Board of Education and owned the Crites Variety store in Hinkleville.

Dave requested cremation and no services. He will be buried beside his father in Laurel Fork Cemetery at a later date. Franklin Delano Hornbeck, 74, of Buckhannon, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at his home.

He was born April 21, 1933, at Sand Run, a son of the late Benjamin Issac Hornbeck and Jessie Pearl Rowan Hornbeck.

On May 17, 1985, he was married to M. Eileen Wright Hornbeck, who survives at Buckhannon.

Also surviving are two daughters, Margie Elaine Abshire and husband, Steve, of Harselle, Ala., and Lucinda Pearl Hornbeck of Warren, Ohio; one son, Randall Franklin Hornbeck of Harselle, Ala.; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Anne Wilson and husband, John, of Ocean City, Md.; four grandsons, Nathan Franklin Hornbeck of Buckhannon, Jason Franklin Hornbeck of Decatur, Ala., Marcus Edward Barnovsky of Elyria, Ohio, and Travis Stevenson Abshire of Harselle, Ala.; one granddaughter, Justine Marie Barnovsky of Elyria, Ohio; two sisters, Helen Suder and husband, Alva, of Minerva, Ohio, and Barbra White and husband, Scott, of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Pearl Woofter Hornbeck; and one brother, Eugene Issac Hornbeck.

He was a pipe fitter with Copperweld Steel. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was a member of Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598.

George Schoonover

George Kiess Schoonover, 98, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away Monday afternoon at Mansfield Place, Philippi.

She was born June 30, 1909, at Warrentown, the daughter of the late Christian Conrad Kiess and Mary Ann Pennington Kiess.

On Aug. 7, 1931, at Oakland, Md., she was married to R.W. “Pete” Schoonover, who preceded her in death July 19, 1978.

Surviving are two sisters, Josephine K. Blackwood of Route 2, Elkins, and Katheryn K. Shannon of Adolph; and one son, Austin Schoonover and wife, Wanda, of Elkins. Also surviving are three grandchildren, James Alan Schoonover and Michael Kiess Schoonover of Elkins and Deborah Thompson of Randleman, N.C.; six great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Thelma K. Zickefoose, Emma K. Carlson, Mary K. Miller and Nancy M. Siertl; one brother, Levi Clyde “Bud” Kiess; and two nephews.

Mrs. Schoonover received her bachelor of arts degree from Davis & Elkins College and her master’s degree in elementary education from West Virginia University. She taught school for 38 years in Randolph County. Her first year of teaching was at Foxtown School near Cassity. Other schools included Washington near Adolph, Oak Grove, Hickory Lick, Pine Grove, Elkwater, Ward and Mill Creek. After retiring in 1970, she continued teaching as a substitute at George Ward and Homestead elementary schools. She was a member of the West Virginia Teachers Association and Randolph County Retired Teachers Association. She attended Memorial Mission Church at Mill Creek.

Robert C. Bennett

Robert Chester “Bud” Bennett, 69, a native of Whitmer, and more recently a resident of Murray City, Ohio, departed this life Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at the Arcadia Nursing Home at Murray City where he had been a patient for the past three years.

He was born Friday, Oct. 7, 1938, at Whitmer, a son of the late Ezra Bennett and Edith Lambert Bennett. Surviving are his special friend, Catherine Canter; one daughter, Brenda Canter Bennett Lutz; one grandson, Justin Lutz; and five sisters, Reva Bennett Primovero of Norton, Ohio, Nancy Bennett Poole of Ridgeville, Ind., Rella Bennett Bodkins of Valley Head, Rachel Bennett Martin of Lanagan, Mo., and Sharon Bennett of Valley Head.

Preceding him in death were one brother, Donald Bennett; and one sister, Mona Shroyer.

Bud attended the schools of Whitmer and worked for 41 years as a logger and sawmill worker in Murray City, Ohio.

A funeral service was conducted Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at the Brown Funeral Home at Murray City, Ohio. The Rev. Opal E. Baker

Mr. Opal Edgar Baker, 87, a resident of 309 Brandenburg St. in Belington, departed this life Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, in Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington following a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 4, 1920, at Avoca, Ind., a son of the late Quince and Gradis Kirkman Baker.

On Nov. 3, 1943, at Philippi, he was united in marriage to the former Margaret Hymes, who survives at their home in Belington.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Allen Edgar Baker and wife, Jane, of Wise River, Mont.: two daughters, Shelley Hollen and husband, Jeff, of the Stringtown Road near Belington and Nancy Tavalocci and husband, Joe, of Elkins; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Don Baker and wife, Ada, of Chesterfield, Ind.; and one sister, Deloris Staggs of New Lebanon, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers.

Mr. Baker was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the 94th Signal Battalion during World War II in the European Theatre. He was employed by the wood working industry for most of his working life and was retired from the Randolph County Board of Education.

At the request of the deceased his remains will be cremated and interred in Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman at a later date. Barbara A. Rexrode

Barbara A. Rexrode, 69, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 8:37 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected.

She was born April 10, 1938, at Wheeling, a daughter of the late Woodrow White and Liberty Hill White.

On Oct. 23, 1956, she was married to Thomas L. Rexrode, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Donna Phillips and husband, Mark, of Dundee, Ohio, and Kathy Judy and husband, Jay, of Elkins; one son, Douglas Rexrode and wife, Traci, of Philippi; two brothers, Steven Swick and wife, Anita, of Beverly and Robert West of Elkins; and two sisters, Edwina Ray Swick Vanzantt of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Daryl Linde of Seattle, Wash. Nine grandchildren, Kellie Rexrode, Michael and Matthew Parlock, Misty Judy, Krysta Rexrode, Jacob Rexrode, Jared Judy, Shayna Rexrode and Seirra Rexrode; and three great-grandchildren, Jade Magee, Isiah Parlock and Emma Parlock also survive.

Also preceding her in death was her stepfather, John Buck White.

Barbara had retired from Family Dental Practice of Elkins after 25 years of service and was an active member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.

Carole June Melton Klosterboer, 66, Escondido, Calif., passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at her home.

She was born, April 26, 1941, at Charleston, a daughter of the late Mont Clarence Melton Jr. and Ruth Cutright Melton.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Carl David Melton.

She is survived by her two sons, James Grey Klosterboer and wife, Elizabeth, of Miamisburg, Ohio, and David Charles Klosterboer of Escondido, Calif.; and a special friend, Colleen. Two sisters, Barbara Teets of San Marcos, Texas, and Dr. Ragina Copeland of Powhatan, Va.; and a special cousin, Dr. Lynn Cartwright of Grafton also survive. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews survive as well.

She was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School with the class of 1959. Sometime later, she enjoyed participating as a princess in the Strawberry Festival Parade and festivities. She was a homemaker whose home was open to family and friends. She delighted in taking visitors on sight-seeing tours in the Escondido and San Diego area. She was loved by the young children for whom she cared in her home when their parents were away. She will be missed by her friends in a sewing circle she attended and others with whom she associated. She also spent a great deal of time visiting and seeing to the needs of special friends in nursing homes.

On Sunday, Jan. 20, 11 a.m. is a tentative time set for friends to be received for a viewing at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home in Buckhannon. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. with Dr. Lynn Cartwright officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Pleasant Dale Cemetery. Causbie Messenger

Causbie N. Messenger, 96, of Centre Hall, Pa., and formerly of Buckhannon, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at Centre Hall, Pa.

She was born Dec. 4, 1911, at Buckhannon, the daughter of the late Thomas and Ethel Kesling Campbell.

Her husband, Everett W. Messenger, preceded her in death in 1974.

She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Messenger of Centre Hall, Pa., and Richard Messenger of Pittsburgh, Pa; and nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Messenger was also preceded in death by a daughter, Irene M. Pritt; and a brother, Harold Campbell.

She was a past member and Sunday school teacher at Macedonia United Methodist Church and a past member of Fishing Camp Women’s Club. She was retired from the W.T. Grant Co. of Pittsburgh.

Dorothy Cromwell

Dorothy “Lynn” Cromwell, 68 , a former resident of 100 Tallman Avenue and for the past six months, a resident of Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, departed this life Monday morning, Jan. 7, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sunday, Sept. 3, 1939, at Charleston, a daughter of the late William Ralph Cromwell Jr. and Dorothy Bowers Cromwell.

She was never married.

Surviving her is one sister, Ann Cromwell Warren of Torrance, Calif.

Lynn was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1957, had received her bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in microbiology from West Virginia University, had taught at Ohio State University, Columbus Technical College, at a middle school at Richmond, Va., and was a member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Lynn’s remains were cremated. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins. The Rev. Douglas A. Jenkins will officiate and inurnment will follow. Laura Nutter, 103, of Zelienople, Pa., and formerly of Buckhannon, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, in Passavant Retirement Community Home in Zelienople, Pa.

She was born May 27, 1904, at Summersville, the daughter of the late Harry and Georgie Coffendaffer Sullivan.

On Sept. 1, 1928, she was married to Roe M. Nutter, who preceded her in death Oct. 6, 1992.

She is survived by seven daughters, Anita DeGarmo of Buckhannon, Elaine Bailey and son-in-law, Harold, of Buckhannon, Betty Adams and son-in-law, Johnny of Pennsylvania, Ruth Fink, Shirley Meehan and son-in-law, Jim of Pennsylvania, Dale Gallentine and son-in-law, Jim, of Virginia, and Linda Barnhart and son-in-law, Daniel, of Virginia; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Nutter was also preceded in death by two daughters, Nellie Nutter and Imogene Carte; and a grandson.

She was a housewife and member of the Church of the Nazarene of Buckhannon.

Evelyn Jeanette Stewart, 83, of Fairmont, passed from this life Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, in her home under Hospice care. She was born in Majestic, Ala., on Oct. 16, 1924.

Evelyn was a loving mother and grandmother, a devout Christian, and a believer in all things good and true. She was a graduate of Morgantown High School and a classmate of the late Don Knotts.

Mrs. Stewart is survived by one son, Carl Lee Stewart and his wife, Dotti, of Nestorville; two daughters, Marilyn Louise Colebank and her husband, Lonnie, of Grafton and Freda Stewart of Baxter; four granddaughters; one grandson; and six great-grandchildren.
