Alta Mae Coffey

Alta Mae Coffey, of Chesterfield, Va., went home to be with the Lord Dec. 28, 2007.

She is survived by three daughters, Ruth Coffey, Connie Brockwell and Ollie Ross Crum; her son, George Tidd; two sons-in-law, Jay Coffer and Oliver Crum; three half brothers, Arch, Richard and Bruce Collins; a half sister, Opel Collins; and 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life was conducted Monday at Clover Hill Baptist Church and interment followed in Dale Memorial Park in Chesterfield, Va.  From 2 Jan 2008.

Gladys H. Hedrick

Gladys H. Hedrick, 90, of Red Creek, and for the last six years a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, was called home to forever be with the Lord on Dec. 31, 2007.

She was born Oct. 24, 1917, at Red Creek, a daughter of the late Flick and Maudie (Raines) Hedrick.

On May 24, 1942, at Red House, Md., she married James Willie Hedrick, who preceded her in death July 4, 2003.

They were the parents of eight children, including four sons, Jim (Kathy) Hedrick of Red Creek, Richard Hedrick of Catlettsburg, Ky., Jack (Jean) Hedrick of Dryfork and Jonathan (Wilma) Hedrick of Mathias; and four daughters, Audrey Nelson of Dryfork, Rose (Bob) Bennett of Red Creek, Betty (Jim) Bonner of Gladwin and Judy (Dean) Smith of Red Creek. Gladys had 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, John (Joy Lou) Hedrick of Harman; one sister, Kate Hedrick of Thomas; two sisters-in-law, Grace Mitchell of El Paso, Texas, and Norean Hedrick of Red Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Burley Hedrick; and one sister, Loutie Smith.

Gladys was a homemaker and member of Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church and Senior Citizens. She took great pride in her and her husband, Willie, being caretakers of Flanagan Hill Cemetery for many years. She also loved the outdoors, gardening, growing flowers and taking long walks.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 24, Red Creek, W.Va. 26289 and/or Friends of Cortland Acres, HC 60, Box 98, Thomas, W.Va. 26292.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hinkle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church at Red Creek with the Rev. Hallie R. Veith

Hallie Rose Veith, 103, of Colonial Place, Elkins, formerly of Lost Creek, died at 7:25 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007, of a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 11, 1904, at Falls Mill, the daughter of the late John and Mary Dove Cobb Veith.

She is survived by two nieces, Elva Hardman and Barbara Tharp of Lost Creek. Several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Veith and Sam Veith; and five sisters, Grace Veith, Roxie Veith, Daisy Prince and two infants.

Miss Veith was a member of Lost Creek Woman’s Club, The NRTA, Daniel Davisson Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter and the Southern Area Library where she was a member of the board. She graduated from Lost Creek High School in 1926. She was a fifth-grade teacher for more than 41 years at Mt. Clare, Lost Creek and the one-room Young School. She was a member of the National Education Association. She enjoyed her teaching career and the love of all the children. She attended Glenville State College and received her master’s degree from West Virginia University. She was interested in genealogy.

Miss Veith was a descendant of John Veith I, who immigrated from Baden-Baden, Germany. He was a miller by trade whose family had a winery in Germany. She was also a descendant of 1st Lt. John Ashley Cobb, who was in the Civil War and was a Methodist circuit riding preacher in his time.

Miss Veith came to Lost Creek in the 1920s and had been a lifelong resident. She was also a lifelong member of Lost Creek United Methodist Church.

At her request, Miss Veith donated her body to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University in a desire that others may be helped. There will be no visitation and memorial services will be conducted at a later date. A Morris Funeral Home service.  From 2 Jan 2008.

J. Robert Ervin

John Robert “Bob” Ervin, 66, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, in University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian Hospital at Pittsburgh, Pa. He had been in declining health.

He was born Monday, Feb. 24, 1941, at Elkins, a son of the late Joseph William Ervin and Rosealyn Knott Ervin. He was married to the former Bridget Sipe, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Jacquelyn White and husband, Jeff, of Elkins and Jennifer Dotson and husband, Jeff, of St. Albans; one sister, Sandra Weekley of Talbott, Tenn.; one grandson, Ryan Joseph Dotson of St. Albans; one granddaughter, Jaclyn “Hunter” Ervin White of Elkins; two special nieces, Kimberly Ross and Betty Kostakos; and several other nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1959, attended Marshall University and Huntington Business College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve. He had worked for the West Virginia Division of Highways for 16 years in the surveying department and for 22 years as a bus driver for Randolph County Schools, retiring in June of 2002. He was the owner of Ervin Auto Sales and J&J Rental Properties. He was a member of Elkins Lodge 1135 BPOE, H.W. Daniels American Legion Post 29, Elkins Lodge 16 IOOF, Fraternal Order of Police, Landlord’s Association, West Virginia Education Association Service Personnel Association and Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins. Final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins where the H.W. Daniels American Legion Post 29 will present the American flag. Charles R. Wagner

Charles Richard “Chappie” Wagner, 83, passed away in the health care unit at Goodwin House in Alexandria, Va., on Dec. 29, 2007.

He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife, Peggy Talbott Wagner, formerly of Elkins; sons, Eric, Christopher and Timothy; grandchildren, Alexander, James, Joseph, Jacqueline and Dominic; brother, Arthur; and nieces, Karen, Laurie and Barbara.

He is the former director of facilities planning at George Mason University and until recently, a member of the Board of Architectural Review in the city of Fairfax. He was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College.

Family will receive relatives and friends at Everly Funeral Home, 10565 Main St., Fairfax, Va., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3810 Meredith Drive, Fairfax, Va., on Friday, Jan. 4, from 11 a.m. to noon, the service hour. Interment will follow in City of Fairfax Cemetery. Frank W. Haught

Col. Frank W. Haught, 92, of Buckhannon, died Jan. 2, 2008, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

He was a retired Army colonel and a former USPFO for the state of West Virginia. He was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Buckhannon, a former member of Buckhannon Country Club, member of Franklin Lodge 7 AF & AM of Buckhannon, a member of Osiris Shrine Temple, a member of Military Officers Association of Alexandria, Va., member of Military Officers Association, Mountain State Chapter of Charleston, a life member of West Virginia National Guard of Charleston, member of American Legion Post 7 of Buckhannon, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663 of Buckhannon, and a member of the 201st Infantry/Field Artillery Association of Morgantown.

He joined the West Virginia Army National Guard on Nov. 15, 1932, and entered active duty with the Army and the 201st Infantry on Jan. 6, 1941. He served in Kodiak, Alaska, from September 1941 to April 1943. He completed Officers Candidate School and was commissioned a second lieutenant on Aug. 14, 1943, served with the 6th Armored Division in Europe during World War II from February 1944 to April 1945.

He was a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. In 1965, the Combined Field Support Maintenance Shop in Point Pleasant was dedicated to Col. Haught “for his long, faithful and devoted service to the West Virginia National Guard.”

He is survived by his wife, Martha Lee Watkins Haught of Buckhannon; two daughters, Carolyn Sue Rice of Scott Depot and Patricia Haught Huffman of Charleston; one son, Gary Lee Haught of Williamstown; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James A. “Bee” Haught and Osha Nuzum Haught; and five brothers, James. H., Armor M., J. Edward, John L. and Warren L. Haught.

During his Army and West Virginia National Guard service, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Pacific Theater Service Medal, European Theatre Service Medal with five campaign stars, World War II Victory Medal and West Virginia Legion of Merit, French Medal for the Invasion of Normandy and the Liberation of France, which was presented by the French government.

In 2002, Gov. Bob Wise presented Col. Haught the state’s highest civilian award of Distinguished West Virginian.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home in Buckhannon. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Stackpole officiating. Burial will follow in Heavner Cemetery. Buckhannon VFW Post 3663, Frank B. Josephine E. Altieri

Josephine Elizabeth Sainato Altieri, 88, a former resident of Coalton, and more recently a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center at Elkins, departed this life early Wednesday morning, Jan. 2, 2008, at the center.

She was born Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1919, at Harding, a daughter of the late Joseph Sainato and Mary Teresa Sainato.

On Aug. 26, 1939, at Staunton, Va., she was married to Julius John Altieri, who preceded her in death Oct. 18, 1977.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia A. Everett and husband, Gerard, of Beverly and Rose Marie Miracle and husband, Mark, of Clarington, Ohio; one sister, Pauline Sainato of Staunton, Va.; three grandchildren, Todd Everett and wife, Kati, of Charlotte, N.C., Trevor Lupi and Ryan Lupi, both of Columbus, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Jake and Delaney Everett of Charlotte, N.C., Sofia Lupi of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were three brothers, Nick, Frank and Rocco Sainato; and two sisters, Mary Concetta Sainato and Katherine Stark.

Josephine attended the schools of Harding was a homemaker and retired as a cook at the Coalton 12 Year School. She was a member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Ruthie B. Biller

Ruthie B. “Ruth” Biller, 86, a resident of Elkins, passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 1, 2008, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

She was born July 5, 1921, a daughter of the late Stephen D. and Jane Godwin Weese.

On March 30, 1939, at Monterey, Va., she was married to Fred E. Biller who preceded her in death March 19, 1979.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Biller Humphreys of Vinton, Va.; and one sister, Reta Weese McElwee of New Brighton, Pa. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Sibyl Roberts of Glen Allen, Va., Susan Thompson of Bent Mountain, Va., and Alissa Humphreys of Vinton, Va.; and three great-granddaughters, Sarah and Leah Thompson and Mayra Roberts.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Carl and Kenneth Weese.

Ruth was a lifelong resident of Elkins and lived most of her life in the Leadsville Community. She worked for many years at Randolph Enterprise Review Newspaper, Montgomery Wards and the G. C. Murphy Co.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Terry Burgess officiating. Interment will follow in American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery.
