Dorothy O'Donnell

Dorothy Gloria O’Donnell, 83, of Harpers Ferry and formerly of Belington, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, in Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson.

She was born March 13, 1924, at Iselin, N.J., the daughter of the late Anthony Tomaso and Caroline Martens Tomaso.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Charles Town. She was a retired registered nurse with Memorial General Hospital in Elkins and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon. She earned her associate’s degree in nursing at David & Elkins College. She had a lifelong tender heart for dogs and cats.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Lee Donovan and husband, Frederick, of Harpers Ferry; one granddaughter, Leela Noronha; one grandson, Ashley Noronha and wife, Mechelle; one great-grandson, Kai Joseph Noronha; and one brother, Gene Tomaso and wife, Dorothy, of Forked River, N.J.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Lawrence O’Donnell; and one brother, Russell Tomaso.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at St. James Catholic Church, 60 Crosswinds Drive, Charles Town. The celebrant will be the Rev. Father Larry Gesy and Deacon David Galvin.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 8:30 p.m., at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, U.S. 340 at Halltown Road, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry. Joseph O’Kernick

Joseph O’Kernick, 87, a resident of Coalton, departed this life early Thursday morning, May 24, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Friday, March 5, 1920, at Coalton, a son of the late Frank O’Kernick and Frances Kordan O’Kernick. On Jan. 3, 1948, at Coalton, he was married to the former Hazel Laura Phillips, who survives. They had celebrated 59 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one son, Joseph Leo O’Kernick and wife, Della, of Elkins; one brother, Fred O’Kernick of Elkins; two sisters, Polly O’Kernick and Anna Louise O’Kernick, both of Elkins; four grandchildren, Angela Barrickman and husband, Brian, Christina Umbright and husband, Bill, Joseph Albert O’Kernick and Patrick Joseph O’Kernick; three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas and Alexandra Barrickman.

Preceding him in death are two brothers, Frankie and Rudy O’Kernick; and one sister, Mary Godwin.

He attended the schools of Coalton and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II.

He had worked for the CCC Camps at Pocahontas County, was a coal miner for 37 years and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America, Local 4047. He was a life member of Roaring Creek Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge at Coalton, was a life member of H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion and took third place from 2001 to 2003 at the Elkins Horseshoe League Invitational Tournament. He was a member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church at Coalton and, along with his friends, maintained the cemeteries associated with the Saint Patrick’s Parish for more than 20 years.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. At 7 p.m. at the funeral home, a prayer service will be recited by the Rev. Father Eric Antwi. On Saturday, May 26, Mr. O’Kernick will be moved to Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. The Rev. Father Donald Higgs and the Rev. Father Eric Antwi will be the Presiders and interment will follow in Saint Vincent Cemetery at Kingsville, where the H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion will present the American flag. Francis I. Oldaker

Francis I. Oldaker, 96, of Buckhannon, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, in Holbrook’s Nursing Home at Buckhannon.

He was born Dec. 5, 1910, in Upshur County, a son of the late Henry Oldaker and Naeoma Everson Oldaker.

On Jan. 1, 1983, he was married to his second wife, Ocie Sothen (Wright) Oldaker who survives at Buckhannon.

He is also survived by one daughter, Ruby Armstrong and husband, Marvin, of Monaca, Pa.; one stepson, Carl Sothen and wife, Carol, of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Debbie Cichoski of Monaca, Pa.; three grandsons, Roger Armstrong of El Paso, Texas, David Armstrong of Monaca, Pa., and Randy Armstrong of Oakdale, Pa.; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were his first wife, Chloe (Suder) Oldaker; one son, Kenneth Oldaker; seven brothers, Robert Oldaker, Henry Oldaker, Emil Oldaker, James Oldaker, Richard Oldaker, Jake Oldaker and Frank Oldaker; and one sister, Opal Edwards.

He was a steel worker at J & L Steel and attended Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church at Kesling Mill.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Holbrook’s Nursing Home for five years of care and compassion.

Esther (Parsons) Olinger, 58, of Dorcas, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, at her home.

June R. Orndorff

June Rae Orndorff, 81 of Wardensville, beloved sister, mother, grandmother and community volunteer, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007.

She was born on June 2, 1925, at Wardensville, the daughter of the late Walter Hawkins and Sudie Raye (Cline) Orndorff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel, who passed Dec. 18, 1999.

She is survived by her twin brother, John “Bus” W. Orndorff of Wardensville; three children and spouses, Jeffrey and Cathy Orndorff of Morgantown, Mitchell and Pam Orndorff of Winchester, Va., and Mary Rae (Orndorff) and Sam Plasters of Winchester, Va.

June had 10 grandchildren, Sarah (Orndorff) Sesin and husband, Corey Sesin, Jessica Orndorff, Joel Orndorff, Meredith Orndorff, Megan Orndorff, Whitney Orndorff, Scott Plasters, Sandy (Plasters) Wilt, Ben Plasters and Elizabeth Plasters; and four great-grandchildren, Brianna, Lexie, Logan and Isaiah. She was blessed by many wonderful nieces and nephews that brought joy and comfort to her life.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Crystal Emswiller and Margaret Teets; and one brother, Carroll Orndorff.

June graduated from Wardensville High School in 1943 and attended Shepherd College.

She worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C., for more than a year and married Daniel on Nov. 25, 1948. She worked in the medical office of Dr. J.D. Mathias in Wardensville and taught at Wardensville High School.

She returned to the work force in her later life working four years as a magistrate assistant. She will long be remembered for her role with the J. Allen Hawkins Community Park. She was one of the founding directors of the park and served 20 years as its treasurer. Working with the other members of the broad, they traveled to Charleston in support of a grant to build the community swimming pool at the park. Gov. Arch Moore flew to Wardensville to award the grant to the community and many years of hard work were rewarded with the new junior-Olympic-size pool. June was also active in the Wardensville PTA and was part of creating talent shows that featured and entertained many of the community.

The family will receive friends Friday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home in Wardensville from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Saturday, Jan. 27. Pastor David Tweedt and the Rev. Michael Funkhouser will officiate. Interment will follow in Wardensville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her three male grandchildren, Scott Plasters, Ben Plasters and Joel Orndorff; nephew, John Warner Kerr; great-nephew, Mark Pappas; and special family friend, Joe Bowers. Harrison Orsburn

Harrison B.B. Orsburn, 85, of Tallmansville, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at his home.

He was born May 9, 1922, at Excelsior, a son of the late Benjamin Buckey Orsburn and Madge Shipman Orsburn.

Surviving are his former wife, Doris Orsburn, of Buckhannon; two daughters, Elizabeth Orsburn of Buckhannon and Iris Hodges and husband, Ernest, of Pfafftown, N.C.; five sons, Harrison B. Orsburn Jr. and wife, Terri, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Thomas Orsburn and wife, Debbie, Kenneth Orsburn and wife, Carla, and Randall R. Orsburn and wife, Debbie, all of Tallmansville and Joseph A. Orsburn and wife, Lisa, of Buckhannon; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Junior Orsburn of Sand Run and Earl Orsburn of Stonewood.

Also preceding him in death were one daughter, Patricia Young; three sisters, Wanneta Orsburn, Elsa McCartney and Alta Holden; and two brothers, Ralph Orsburn and John Orsburn.

He was a coal miner at the Robinson Run and Williams Mines of Consolidated Coal Co. and was Christian by faith. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, at the funeral home with the Rev. Tim Lewis officiating. Shirley Ortega

Shirley Ortega, 61, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at her home.

She was born Oct. 11, 1945, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late George Anton Kowalkoski and Pauline Morrison Campbell, who survives in Upshur County.

She was married to Jack Ortega, who preceded her in death.

Also surviving are one son, Tim Walker of Buckhannon; one daughter, Laurie Walker of Buckhannon; two brothers, George Kowalkoski and Mike Kowalkoski; and three sisters, Debbie Kowalkoski, Theresa Kowalkoski and Kimberly Kowalkoski.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Patrick Scott Walker and Shawn David Walker.

She was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith. Her hobbies included arts and crafts and fishing.

Marguerite Osberger

Marguerite M. Osberger, 88, a resident of Elkins, passed away Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, in Valentine’s Personal Care Home.

She was born July 12, 1919, at Elkins, a daughter of the late John and Mary Kinkopf Swiger.

Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Charles E. Osberger of Wye Mills, Md., and Robert M. Osberger of Sarasota, Fla. Two brothers, John Swiger of northern California and William Swiger of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Marie Hosch of Elkins; and two grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding her in death was a brother, Frank Swiger.

Ms. Osberger attended Davis & Elkins College and was employed for many years as a legal secretary at law firms in southern California and Washington, D.C., and served in the American Red Cross in the Philippines and Germany during World War II. She was active in various community groups for many years including Cub Scouts and was a devoted member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church where she served as a Bible study teacher. She was a member of the Seneca Trail Artist Guild, was an award winning amateur artist, exhibited and created clothing and handicrafts during the Mountain State Forest Festival and enjoyed music, travel, gardening and public affairs.

Ms. Osberger’s remains were cremated. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Janet Jenkins officiating. Guy W. Osborn

Mr. Guy Wilson Osborn, 90, a resident of Elkins, passed away Wednesday morning, April 11, 2007, at his home.

He was born March 19, 1917, near Buckhannon, a son of the late Robert E. Osborn and the late Gertrude Moss Osborn.

On Dec. 1, 1945, in England, he was married to Margaret Ann MacLean, who preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1994.

Surviving are two brothers, Lida Junior Osborn of Warren, Ohio, and Steven B. Osborn of Elkins; and one sister, Madelene Booth of Buckhannon. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Also preceding him in death was one sister, Ruth Phillips. Mr. Osborn served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 until his retirement in 1964 with 22 years of service. During his service to the Air Force, he was stationed in the United States, Scotland, England, and France and participated in the Berlin Airlift. Following his retirement, he was employed for many years at Elkins Industrial Equipment Co. He was a life member of Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 A.F.&A.M., Pilgrim Commandery No. 21, Knights Templar, Chapter 35 Royal Arch Masons, a member of IOOF. Lodge 116, William Ewing No. 55 IOOF, Associate Member of Seneca Trail Lodge No. 104, AARP, Randolph Senior Center and a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Association in Washington, D.C. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

Freda S. Ottinger

Freda S. Ottinger, 78, of Mountain Grove, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, at her daughter’s residence in Huttonsville.

She was born Nov. 27, 1929, in Braxton County, the daughter of the late Ernest Smallwood and Elva Wilson Smallwood.

She was married to Fred Bernell Sparks who preceded her in death in 1967, and Albert C. Ottinger who preceded her in death in 1997.

Mrs. Ottinger was a bookkeeper her entire life until her retirement. She attended the Huntersville Baptist Church in Huntersville. She was a homemaker who enjoyed doing crafts, especially needlework. She loved the outdoors.

She is survived by four children, Harold Sparks and wife, Debbie, of Mountain Grove, Va., Sarah Wood and husband, Charles, of Huttonsville, Clay Ottinger and wife, Cheryl, of Waynesboro, Va., and Linda Anderson of Walnut Cove, N.C.; two sisters, Veda Smallwood, of Belle and Fern McClung of Summersville; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and two special “grand-dogs,” “Annie” and “Shady.”

She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Smallwood; a sister, Ernestine “Sally” Smallwood; a son-in-law, Paul Anderson; and a great-grandson.

A graveside service will be at 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Mountain Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Thurman Jenkins officiating. Leila J. Ours

Leila Joy Ours, 98, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007, in Victoria Manor at Buckhannon.

She was born June 3, 1909, at Tallmansville, a daughter of the late Samuel B. Tenney and Nora Butcher Tenney.

In 1930, she married Mayford Thaddeus Ours, who preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1989.

Surviving are one son, Bruce Ours and wife, Tina Williams, of Seabrook, Md.; one foster son, Edward Martin and wife, Kathy, of Ohio; four daughters, Marette Sue Martin of Redding, Calif., Marian L. Ours of Vacaville, Calif., Sheila Markins of Huntington and Priscilla Clark and husband, Quincy, of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Hilton (Tenney) Mason of Buckhannon; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and caregivers, Donna and Della Hoover and families.

Also preceding her in death were one son, Samuel W. Ours; three sisters, Flora Riggs, Lula Reed and Zona Carter; and one brother, Lloyd Tenney.

She was a teacher and principal and a member of First Untied Methodist Church and Mt. Carmel Church. She attended Glenville State College, received a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a master’s degree from West Virginia University.

She was an elementary school teacher and principal in Braxton, Upshur, Webster and Kanawha counties. She belonged to the American Association of University Women, WSCS, Homemaker’s Club of Tallmansville, 4-H Leader and Pioneer, West Virginia Education Association, National Education Association and the Retired Teacher’s Association of Kanawha and Upshur counties.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at the funeral home with the Rev. Billy Scott Mick and the Rev. John Allan Mason officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Tallmansville. Mary E. Ours

Mary Eleanor Ours, 71, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, July 10, 2007, in Regency Hospital in Florence, S.C.

She was born March 7, 1936, at Grantsville, a daughter of the late George Linn Strader and Sara Olive Howes Strader.

On July 26, 1954, she was married to William Ours, who preceded her in death Jan. 27, 2007.

Surviving are one son, William George Ours of Santa Clarita, Calif.; one daughter, Kathryn Lynn Ours of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Elizabeth Rose Strader of Indiantown, Fla.; and one brother, George Neal Strader of Huntington.

Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Norma Lee Strader Stemple and Mildred Lynn Strader Graham; and one brother, James Lowell Strader.

She was a housewife.

William Ours

William “Bill” Ours, 72, a resident of Buckhannon, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at his home under the care of Peoples Hospice of Clarksburg.

He was born Nov. 29, 1934, at Buckhannon, the son of the late Willie Ours and Ethel Wilfong Ours.

He was married to Mary Eleanor Strader Ours, who survives at Buckhannon.

Also surviving are one son, William George Ours of Santa Clarita, Calif.; and three sisters, Grace Allman of Lantana, Fla., Betty Rollins and husband, Clifford, of Palm City, Fla., and Ruthalee Napoli and husband, Phillip, of West Chester, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Greene.

He was the owner and operator of Straders Inc. and attended first United Methodist Church.

Leonard N. Oxier

Leonard Newton Oxier, 86, of Oakmound Apartments, Clarksburg, formerly of Philippi and Elkins, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, at his home.

He was born Sept. 20, 1920, at Valley Head, a son of the late James Willard and Bessie (Currence) Oxier.

On Dec. 24, 1953, he married the former Iva Cloe Thompson, who preceded him in death on Dec. 11, 1985.

He was the last member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by four brother, Austin Oxier, Arley Oxier, Esker Oxier, Woodrow “Woody” Oxier and by two sisters, Ivy McCauley and Idras McGee Coffman.

Surviving are one sister-in-law, Maude Oxier of Beverly and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Oxier was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School and Berea College of Berea, Ky. He was a sovereign Grace Baptist and had served as a pastor in the Valley Head community. He had also worked at Kelly Foundry, Lab-Craft and Costal Lumber.

At the request of the deceased, his remains were cremated. An interment of the ashes will be at Valley Head Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, with the Rev. Downing Gregory officiating.
