Mrs. Martin attended the Cherry Fork one-room school near Montrose, Montrose Junior High School and was a graduate of Parsons High School. She held a teaching certificate from Parsons Normal School. She received certificates and degrees from Glenville Normal School, Davis & Elkins College, ending with a master’s degree in English and reading from West Virginia University. She was a retired teacher having taught for 35 years in Randolph County and a year in Logan County. Beginning in 1965, she left Central Elementary School in Elkins to help initiate the Remedial Reading Program in the Randolph County rural schools. While visiting 10 rural schools to assist students who needed some help in the field of language arts, she took photos of schools that were to be closed due to consolidation. These photos were later published in a book. One Subscription School was moved to the Beverly Museum grounds and became the “Subscription School Museum.” After consolidation closed the rural schools, she returned to Central School where she taught until her retirement in 1972. After retirement, she helped compile and publish the Montrose Community History. The sale of the book was donated to Mercy Chapel Church at Montrose. She also helped publish “Welcome to Glenmore” and the proceeds were donated to Allegheny Family History Society. Later, with the help of Willetta Hinkle, retired school employee, Dr. Larry Parsons, assistant county superintendent at the time, and Margaret Gutshall another book was compiled, “School Memories,” and the proceeds from this book were used to move and restore the Subscription School at Beverly. Daisy left a library with books of family history, special times and places, designed in her own way. From all of the books, people have come for family history, student projects and pictures. She was a member of Retired School Employees, Randolph County Historical Society, University Extension Community Educational Outreach Service, Lambda Chapter Society International for Outstanding Women Educators, Daughters of the American Revolution and Randolph County Senior Center. Mrs. Martin started her Sunday school teaching in 1939, having taught all of her adult life, starting at Montrose Episcopal Church, Walkersville Methodist Church and Elkins First United Methodist Church where she ended her church career in 1986 with 13 years as Ladies Bible Class teacher. The other years, she taught second grade. Mrs. Martin later attended New Life Fellowship Church at Glenmore. She was a beloved Christian friend and spiritual leader and had said, “I have had a happy life as Jesus as my leader, always sings ‘All The Way My Savior Leads Me’.” She was determined to achieve, and when her husband retired, she sold World Book Encyclopedias and worked in stores.
