Jack B. Kellison
The end to Jack Kellison’s earthly life came on Feb. 5, 2007,
two days short of his 77 years of life.

Stokedale, N.C., and Danny of Marlinton; a daughter, Karen Sharp and husband,
Randy; and a grandson, Steven of Marlinton. Additional family members that mourn
his passing are half sister Pat Shinn of Scott Depot; a brother, Bob and wife,
Larita, or Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Rose E. Kordes of Cape Coral, Fla.; and his
former wife, Dottie Kellison of Marlinton
Deceased members of his immediate family, in addition to his parents, are
sisters Norma J. Van Reenan of Beckley and Lucy C. Moore of Marlinton.
Numerous nieces and nephews of the deceased and their offspring were also
saddened by his death.
Funeral services consist of visitation at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in
Arbovale on Friday, Feb. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by a celebration of
his life at the Durbin United Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 10. His pastor,
the Rev. Frank Naglic, will conduct the services. The body is to be cremated.
Jack’s professional life consisted of over-the-road hauling of freight to and
from destinations in almost every state east of the Rocky Mountains and eastern
Canada. His employers were Burns Motor Freight of Marlinton and then Howes
Leather Co. of Frank. During his retirement years beginning in 1997, he also
drove occasionally for Inter-State Hardwoods Co. of Bartow. In the millions of
miles he traveled, he encountered hardships such as flat tires, wrecks, icy
roads, engine malfunctions, detours and being lost. Manipulating Times Square in
New York City during rush hour with a load of cattle that was letting their
discomfort show by vocal means was only one of the experiences. The hardships
were largely offset by the good times that consisted of knowing people from Nova
Scotia to Florida and New York City and El Paso.
His employments with Howes Leather caused him to be relocated from the central
to the upper end of Pocahontas County, first to a small rural abode on the old
section of the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike, on the Allegheny side, and then to
urban Arbovale where he and Jake made their home. Always short of quality
drivers on a timely basis, Bartow-Frank-Durbin Fire and Rescue (BFD) eagerly
engaged him as a volunteer. Beginning in July 1997, Jack shepherded the rescue
vehicle on 40 outings during his first half year of volunteerism. Activity
picked up from that start so that by the end of 2006 he had logged 918 trips,
with a high of 120 runs in one of the intervening years. Those trips to the
hospitals in Marlinton, Elkins, Morgantown, Charlottesville, Roanoke or
Charleston took a minimum of four hours. The total number of miles traveled and
hours consumed with him at the wheel would sum to the thousands. In recognition
of his devotion, he received a plaque in 1999 during BFD’s 45th anniversary.
That was topped in 2005 when he received the volunteers service’s outstanding
contributor award.
Toward the end of 2006, a malfunction of body parts brought him to the end of
the road. But, he still has one last ride. That from earth’s resting place
aboard a BFD emergency vehicle with Jack’s name and 272, his call number,
emblazoned on the side. For that recognition, the family requests that
contributions in memory of Jack be directed to BFD Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box
267, Durbin, W.Va. 26264. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale is in
charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be made to
www.wallaceandwallacefh.com. From 6 Feb 2007.
