Emil Faesenmeier Jr.

Emil Joseph “EJ” Faesenmeier Jr., 32, a resident of Coontz Avenue, Belington, passed away unexpectedly June 23, 2007.

He was born Aug. 14, 1974, a son of Emile Joseph and Juanita Faesenmeier and the Rev. David “Cowboy” and Virginia Sue (Summerfield) Brown.

On Aug. 30, 1997, he was united in marriage to Kimberly Dawn (Daugherty) Faesenmeier of Belington.

Also surviving are one daughter, Emily Dawn Faesenmeier of Belington; one son, Isaiah Joseph Faesenmeier of Belington; one sister, Kimberly and husband, Frank Lowther, of Buckhannon; a half sister, Amber Faesenmeier of Belington; two half brothers, Joseph Faesenmeier and Adam Faesenmeier, both of Belington; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Faesenmeier was preceded in death by his grandparents, Russell “Spook” and Virginia Maxine Summerfield and Arthur and Fredia Faesenmeier.

Mr. Faesenmeier enjoyed watching boxing and football games.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, June 27, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the service hour, with the Rev. Edward J. Falk

Edward John Falk, 83, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 1:05 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, in Valentine Personal Care Home.

Edward J. Falk

Edward John Falk, 83, a resident of Elkins, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, in Valentine’s Personal Care Home following an extended illness. 

He was born June 17, 1924, in Alma, Kan., a son of the late Charles Stanley and Bertha Matilda Schmanke Falk. 

He was married to Edith Loraine Kerns on April 6, 1946, who survives in Elkins.

Also surviving are two daughters, Connie Elaine Falk Mako and husband, Rick, of Fairfax Station, Va., and Kathy Jane Falk Phillips and husband, Lynn, of Valley Bend; two sisters, Jean Traylor and Mary Sare of Texas City, Texas; five grandchildren, John Edward Dumsick, Frederick Michael Mako, Elizabeth Marie Mako, Jonathan J. Phillips and Roslyn J. Phillips Howell and husband, Kevin. Great-grandchildren, Ashten Phillips and Shanda Howell, also survive. 

Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Alvin Falk, Lloyd Falk, Vernon Falk and Charles Falk; and a sister, Margorie Hobert.

Mr. Falk was drafted in the U.S. Army at the age of 18 and was trained in Elkins. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Army in France, the Battle of Normandy and in Germany. Following his discharge, he returned to Elkins where he married Edith and lived for 61 years.

He was a former member of St. John Lutheran Church, Alma, Kan., and a life member of H.W. Daniels American Legion Post 29 and Tygart Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3647.

He was employed by A.J. McQuain as a plasterer, and was a route man for Dutch Oven Bakery for over 20 years. He later worked for Monongahela Power Co., Armstrong Custom Paving and Lynn’s Gulf for many years.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Terry Cannon officiating.  Interment will follow in the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery near Cravensdale where full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite by members of H.W. Daniels American Legion Post 29 and Tygart Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3647. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care Corp., P.O. Clifford W. Fallen

Mr. Clifford Wesley Fallen, 77, a resident of the Audra Road, Belington, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2007, at his home after a very long illness.

He was born July 4, 1930, at his home in Upshur County, the fourth child of the late Martin Edward Fallen and Geneva Crites Fallen.

On Feb. 22, 1952, he was united in marriage to the former Ruby Tallman, a daughter of the late Herb and Beulah Tallman. Mrs. Fallen survives at their home on the Audra Road near Belington.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Fallen is survived by one brother, James Fallen of Ravenswood; five sisters, Mary Suder of Belington, Juanita Mustain of Rockville, Va., Marjorie Hickman, Dorothy Zirkle and Anna Mae Baxa, all of Buckhannon; and two sisters-in-law, “Short” Suder of Belington and Pauline Pharis of Elkins. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Delworth and Robert Fallen.

He attended the schools of Upshur County. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953 at which time he married the love of his life, Ruby Tallman. After his tour of duty, Mr. and Mrs. Fallen lived in Cleveland, Ohio, for 11 years and worked in the area. In 1962, they returned to West Virginia. On Jan. 1, 1963, Mr. Fallen and his brother, James, opened the Dunbar Retreading Service Inc. in Dunbar. In June 1974, they sold the business and Mr. Fallen worked for Gaston Grocery Inc. in Buckhannon, but tires never left his blood. He went back into the business with Bob Carpenter and operated Junior Tire in Junior. After failing health, he had to sell his business. From this time on, Mr. Fallen had suffered for many years with a heart condition and other health problems.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St., Belington, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, and on Saturday until 11 a.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Destry Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in Fraternal Cemetery at Belington where the presentation of the American flag will be accorded by American Legion Post 44 of Philippi. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Grace Chapel United Methodist Church in care of Katherine White, RR 1, Box 33A, Belington, W.Va. 26250. Paul Farnsworth

Paul Farnsworth, 93, of Erin, Tenn., died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, in Trinity Hospital in Erin.

He was born May 4, 1913, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Charles and Muriel Smith Farnsworth.

He was married to Jean Cunningham, who preceded him in death on May 14, 1983.

Mr. Farnsworth is survived by one son, Charles Thomas Farnsworth of Tennessee Ridge, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

He was a parts man for Ford Motor Co.

Helen J. Farthing

Helen Jane Alyea Farthing, 76, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Saturday afternoon in Davis Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Sunday, May 24, 1931, at Norton, a daughter of Courtland P. Alyea, and Phrona Kisner Alyea who preceded her in death in 1939 and 1935 respectively, after which she was raised by her aunt and uncle, the late Nellie and Endres Blizzard.

She was twice married. First, to Ivan W. Chenoweth, who survives in Florida; and second, to Donald R. Farthing Sr., who preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons, David H. Chenoweth and wife, Katie, of New Bern, N.C., and Thomas K. Chenoweth of Gas City, Ind.; one daughter, Marsha K. Chenoweth and husband, Gary, of Elkins; one sister, Juanita J. Estrada and husband, Ted, of Cleveland, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Zack Chenoweth, Tricia Giessinger and Kristine Neeley; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin Giessinger and Neeley Giessinger; a special friend, Herbert Bright; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1948, had worked at Foster-Forbes Glass Co. as an accounting supervisor, was a volunteer for the Augusta Heritage Festival, the Railroad Welcome Center and North Elementary School, was actively involved in Elkins Church of the Brethren by teaching during vacation Bible school and Sunday school and working in the ladies’ group, helped initiate a recycling program at Foster-Forbes Glass Co. and was a member of Salamonie Church of the Brethren at Lancaster, Ind.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Ellsworth Feaster

Ellsworth Feaster, 84, of Petersburg, died Friday, March 23, 2007, in Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

H. Fenstermacher

Harold Fenstermacher, 61, a resident of Elkins, passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at his home. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

He was born April 28, 1946, at Weaver, a son of the late Hurley and Ona Humphrey Fenstermacher.

On April 23, 1976, he was married to the former Charlene Schoonover of Elkins.

Also surviving are one son, Joshua Fenstermacher at home; three daughters, Kelly Vandevender and husband, James, of Bartow, Sandy Shinaberry and husband, Brian, of Durbin and Shelley Hornick and husband, Jeff, of Beverly; two stepdaughters, Sherri Taylor and husband, Buster, and Stephanie Chenoweth and husband, James, of Elkins; and his mother-in-Law, Anna Mae Schoonover; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Baughman of Grafton, Norma Foy and husband, Buck, of Ohio, and Ellen Carter and husband, Herman, of Helvetia Road; three brothers, Johnny Fenstermacher and wife, Sharon, of Glenmore, Guy Fenstermacher and wife, Jean, of Belington and Eugene Fenstermacher.

One brother, Tom Fenstermacher, preceded him in death.

Harold attended the schools of Barbour County and graduated from Philip Barbour High School. He was employed at Mongold Lumber Co. and Coastal Lumber Co. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed working on vehicles. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Friends may call at Beverly Community Church Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., the funeral hour with the Rev. Curlie Ray Sr. and the Rev. Robert L. Lowther officiating. Iva Fenstermacher

 Iva Jean (Manley) Fenstermacher, 80, a resident of Mary Street in Philippi, departed this life on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Feb. 7, 1927, at Volga, a daughter of the late Kara Robert and Ida Pearl (Foster) Manley.

On Nov. 30, 1945, she was united in marriage to Kenneth L. Fenstermacher, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kenna Jean and husband, Sam Wright, and Nancy Joan and husband, Gary Disbennett, all of Philippi and Robin Rebecca Bartmess of Rogers, Texas; two sisters, Betty Marteney of Philippi and Katheryn Dean of Grafton; nine grandchildren, Wendy (Wright) and husband, Brad Owens, of Nashville, Tenn., Chadley and wife, Gail Wright, of Charleston, Jay and wife, Sara Shaffer, of Rogers, Texas, Ben Varner of Lampasas, Texas, Tyson Disbennett of Charlotte, N.C., Jocelyn Bartmess of Rogers, Texas, and Brody and Darby Disbennett, both of Philippi; five great-grandchildren, Cassidy Paige, Reid and Cade Owens, all of Nashville, Tenn., Lucas Wright of Charleston and Alexander Shaffer of Rogers, Texas; and one stepgreat-grandson, Patrick Rogers of Charleston.
Mrs. Fenstermacher was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, James, Kenneth and Thomas Manley; and two sisters, Evelyn Kittle and Helen Maxson.

Mrs. Fenstermacher graduated from Philippi High School in 1945 and later attended West Virginia Wesleyan College. She was employed in 1957 as a secretary to the Dean of Students at Alderson-Broaddus College. While working full time, she completed requirements for a bachelor’s degree from Alderson-Broaddus College and was awarded a Fellowship to complete requirements for a master’s degree from West Virginia University. She was named to the Silver Key Honorary Society at A-B and was twice selected by the Associated Women Students as “Faculty Woman of the Year.” She was selected as Outstanding Alumni and twice received the dedication of the A-B Battler Yearbook. The Parents Association presented her with the Parents Citation for her dedication to the students at A-B. Her biography appeared in “Who’s Who” in American Women and “Who’s Who” in the East. She retired from Alderson-Broaddus College in 1985 with 28 years service and held the position of Dean of Students at the time of her retirement. She was affectionately known as “Dean Jean” by faculty and students. She was active in civic organization and had served as president of the Philippi Business and Professional Women and the Philippi Woman’s Club. She was a member and past Matron of the Philippi Chapter 41 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Philippi United Methodist Church and served as secretary/church administrator following her retirement. She was a member of the choir, secretary to the administrator board and president of the United Methodist Women for 17 years. She was a past officer or the Buckhannon District United Methodist Women and the Mon Valley United Methodist Women.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi today from 1 p.m.to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. by the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 41. Viewing will continue Friday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at which time Mrs. Fenstermacher will be moved to the Philippi United Methodist Church to lie in state from noon to 1 p.m., the service hour with the Revs. Gary and Alicia Rapking officiating. Beulah M. Ferguson

Beulah Marie Channell Ferguson, 91, a resident of Norton since 1921, departed this life Saturday evening, June 16, 2007, at her home.

She was born Monday, Feb. 21, 1916, at Becca’s Creek, Randolph County, the oldest child of the late Grady Meek Channell and Bessie May Rosencrance Channell.

On Jan. 2, 1935, at Elkins, she was married to Chester Stanley “Dink” Ferguson, who preceded her in death on April 6, 1974.

Surviving her are one daughter, Carolyn Sue Ferguson Bodkins of Norton; one grandson, I. Randall “Randy” Bodkins of Norton; one brother, Paul Channell and wife, Gladys, of Elkins; one sister, Virginia Shipman of Heath, Ohio; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Channell of Junior, Betty Ellen Cutright of Elkins, Arlene Hathaway of Kingwood and Roberta Bautista, formerly of Rowlsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two sisters, Pauline Corrick Kuchenbrod and Betty Gainer; and two brothers, Bobby E. Channell and Richard Channell.

She attended Norton Grade School through the eighth grade and graduated from Coalton High School with the class of 1934. She worked at the company store in Norton, as cook at the Norton Grade School, clerk at the Norton Post Office, Montgomery Ward at Elkins, and for 25 years at the G.C. Murphy Co., retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Randolph County Senior Center Melody Choir and a Methodist by faith.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, June 19, at 10 a.m. at American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery. The Rev. Jonas Johnson Jr. will officiate and interment will follow. Cheyenne Hope Ferrell, infant daughter of Daniel Ferrell Jr. and Patricia Minear of Elkins, passed away at 2:47 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 in Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Cheyenne H. Ferrell

Cheyenne Hope Ferrell, infant daughter of Daniel Ferrell Jr. and Patricia Minear of Elkins, passed away at 2:47 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, in the Children’s Hospital at Pittsburgh, Pa.

She was born Dec. 4, 2006, in Clarksburg.

Surviving are three brothers, Bryan, Dwayne and Gauge Ferrell; two sisters, Shannon and Sarah Ferrell; maternal grandparents, Wendy Minear, of Missouri and Clayton Minear of Florida; paternal grandparents, Daniel Ferrell Sr. and Joyce Ferrell of Elkins; and maternal great-grandmother, Joyce Minear of Schwenksville, Pa.

Friends may call from noon until 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday from the funeral home chapel and cremation will follow.

James N. Fetty

James Nicholas “Jim” Fetty, 38, of the Red Knob Road, Buckhannon, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at his home. 

He was born Aug. 13, 1969, at Buckhannon, a son of John Norman and Margaret Agatha Bull Fetty of Buckhannon.          

Also surviving are his wife, Anissa Jean Westfall Fetty, whom he married on Dec. 17, 1994; his son, Isaac Nicholas Fetty, at home; a sister, Annette Fetty Santilli and husband, Sam, of Philippi; a brother, John N. Fetty Jr. and wife, Karen, of Flemington; his godchild and niece, Stephanie Santilli; two nephews, John N. Fetty III and Tyler Christian Fetty; his paternal grandmother, Anna Belle Linton Fetty of Lost Creek; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jerry and Carol Anderson Westfall of Cross Lanes. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Jim worked with his parents at Fetty’s Repair Service, was a volunteer for the Upshur County Little League, was very active in 4-H and had attended the National 4-H Congress. He loved mechanic work, fishing with his son, Isaac, and was a Methodist by faith. Jim was a loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 p.m to 8 p.m. at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. On Monday, Oct. 8, Mr. Fetty will lie in state at the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church from noon to 2 p.m., the service hour, with the Rev. Ron McCauley officiating. Burial will follow in Upshur County Memorial Park in Tennerton. There has been a trust fund established at the First Community Bank for his son, Isaac Nicholas Fetty. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Fetty Family Scholarship at the Upshur County 4-H Foundation, P.O. Box 488, Buckhannon, W.Va.  26201. David B. Fields

Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. David B. Fields, 69 of Dayton, Ohio, passed away Monday, June 11, 2007, in Hospice of Dayton.

He was born on April 6, 1938, to the late Robert Lang and Ruth Hope (Jeffers) Fields.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley A. Fields; sons, Timothy Jeffers Fields of Enterprise, Ala., and Derek Vernon Fields of Dayton; grandson, Jonathan Derek Fields and his mother, Liann Baker of West Point, Utah; brothers, Robert Lang Fields Jr. of Elkins and retired Capt. Albert Randolph Fields of Valrico, Fla.; foster son, John Mauro and wife, Debbie, of Monroe, Ohio; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law of West Virginia.

He received a bachelor’s degree in 1961 from Davis & Elkins College, a master’s degree in counseling from Ball State University in 1975 and a master’s degree in divinity from the United Theological Seminary in 1983. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1984 where he served in the Vietnam War and received a Bronze Star. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for various government contractors and retired from SAIC in 2002. He was also an ordained American Baptist Minister and served many churches in the Dayton area.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 17, at First Baptist Church, 412 Randolph Ave. in Elkins with Dr. Marvin L. Parli officiating. His family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the time of service Sunday at the church. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Daisy K. Findley

Daisy Kathleen Findley, 91, a resident of Route 2, Belington, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 18, 1915, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Arthur B. and Elizabeth C. (Ridgway) Poling.

She was united in marriage Sept. 22, 1945, to Clyde M. Findley, who preceded her in death Jan. 14, 1997.

Surviving are one brother, Arthur B. Poling Jr. of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one nephew, George and wife, Eileen Stehura, of Clarksburg; and three nieces, Frances and husband, TJ Mumford, of Salisbury, Md., Debbie Poling of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Sharon and husband, Larry Harding, of Indiana; one great-niece, Barbara and husband, Daniel, Lauffer, and one great-great-niece and nephew, Andrea and Zachary Lauffer, all of Hurricane.

Mrs. Findley was preceded in death by one son, Paul Roger Findley; one brother, Charles R. Poling; and three sisters, Gertrude E. Nesselrotte, Ellen M. Poling and Sarah Snyder.

Mrs. Findley was a homemaker and in earlier years worked in the decorating department for McNichol Pottery Co. Mrs. Findley was a member of the Order of Easter Star Chapter 41 of Philippi and the Corley United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi today from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The family will be present from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. by the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 41. Lancil Finlen

Lancil “Bud” Finlen, 85, of 2923 Iron Works Road, died on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at his home in North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7. at Wilkerson Funeral Home and the burial will follow in Pleasantville Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Finlen was born in Howell Place, to the late Claude and Zenia Pennington Finlen.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II as a driver in the Aleutian Islands for several generals and commanders. He worked many years for Pet Milk Co. and was later employed and retired from the Singer Sewing Co. He enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. He loved telling about the good ole’ days and treasured every moment spent with his great-grandson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Irene Finlen and Marguerite Tiesh; brother, Elmer Finlen; half sister, Marie Blumstin; and half brothers, Robert Finlen and Gene Finlen.

Mr. Finlen is survived by his sons, Greg Finlen and Pam Vernon, Lancil “Buddy” Finlen Jr. and Carolyn Pergerson, Jeff Finlen and wife, Wanda, Claude Finlen, all of Reidsville, Larry Finlen of Texas, and Donnie Finlen of Virginia; daughters, Diane Summer of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Annalisa Finlen, Adam and Julie Finlen, Amber and David Fallon and Chris Finlen; great-grandson, Carter Lee Finlen; sisters, Helen Shiflett of Elkins and Eldora Hudgins of Huntsville, Ala; special niece, Marth Hart and husband, Bob of Beverly.

David K. Finley

David Kent Finley, 69, a resident of Weston, departed this life at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, Oct, 31, 2007, at his home following a short battle with cancer.

He was born Thursday, July 21, 1938, at Elk City, a son of the late Gerald Finley,Sr.,and Wilda Canfield Finley, who survives in Wyoming. 

On Nov. 16, 1966, he was married to the former Karen Lee Hicks, who survives at Weston. 

Also surviving are six children, Merllene K. Yorkey and husband, Jim, of Elkins, Jeffrey A. Finley and wife, Christy, of Cleveland, Mo., Todd R. Finley of Vermillion, S.D., Philip K. Finley of Cumberland, Md., Brenda S. Nicholson of Weston and Kara B. Studstill and husband, Chris, of Athens, Ala.; six grandchildren, Andrew “Andy” Yorkey of Fairmont, Cory Finley of Cleveland, Mo., Isaac Finley of Sioux City, Iowa, Alexis Finley of Clarksburg, Jason Finley of Weston and Christian Studstill of Athens, Ala.; two brothers, Gary Finley and wife, Alice, and Gerald Finley Jr. and wife, Doretta, all of Green River, Wyo.; one sister, Jessie Marcho of Philippi; a brother-in-law, Conrad B. Hicks and wife, Christine, of Belington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Finley was a veteran having served with the U.S. Air Force. He was a union carpenter by trade while living in the Denver Metropolitan area and was the founder of the Leisure Time Video chain of movie rental stores upon returning to the West Virginia area. Mr. Finley retired in April of 2007. He enjoyed bird watching and was an avid reader. 

At the request of the deceased, his body was donated to the Human Gifts Registry at Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. The will be no memorial service. Virginia W. Fisher

Virginia Waldeck Fisher, 98, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at her home in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Born July 10, 1909, at Clarksburg, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Della Waldeck Fisher.

Miss Fisher was a graduate of Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg. She graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1932 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and later earned a master’s degree in secondary education at the University of Pittsburgh. She was a widely recognized high school chemistry teacher in both West Virginia and Pennsylvania, with a teaching career that spanned nearly 60 years. Both her professional and personal lives were marked with an extraordinary commitment to the promotion of chemical education and to the encouragement of chemistry students. Miss Fisher was actively engaged in her profession as a chemical educator. She was a member of the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society, the Society of Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh and the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh. She was the initiator of the Pittsburgh Chemistry Olympics for high school chemistry students and was a leader in bringing the International Chemistry Olympiad to Pittsburgh in 1992. She received numerous awards and recognitions for her work in chemistry education and was the author of several publications, including books on the Pittsburgh Chemistry Olympics and on Dr. Nicholas Hyma, her chemistry professor at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Miss Fisher was very active in the alumni programs of West Virginia Wesleyan College, In 1988, she received the West Virginia Wesleyan College Alumni Association’s “Extra Mile Award” in recognition of her efforts to recruit students and to raise funds for chemistry scholarships. She was a founder of the Nicholas Hyma Scholarship Society. She also was a member of the West Virginia Wesleyan College Emeritus Club and a life member of the Wesleyan Society. A life-long member of the United Methodist Church, Miss Fisher attended the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburgh.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, in the West Meditation Chapel at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon with the Rev. Dr. Harold T. Elmore officiating. Interment will follow in Machaphelia Cemetery in Weston. Augusta C. Fitch

Augusta Carrico Fitch, 90, of Fairfax, Va., passed away Nov. 14, 2007, in Fairfax Hospital at Falls Church, Va.

She was born March 1, 1917, at Coketon, a daughter of the late Chambers Lee Carrico and Laura Elizabeth Lipscomb.

She was the loving wife of Paul Arthur Fitch, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are one sister, Olive Carrico Heitz of Fairfax, Va.; three nieces; and three nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one bother, Lee Carrico; and two sisters, Hester Paugh and Bertha Rosser.

She was an active member of The Eastern Star, and a lifelong member of the Methodist Church in Davis. Mrs. Fitch worked for the U.S. Navy Department during World War II in Washington, D.C., and retired from management of an accounting office for Indiana Public Service. The proudest part of her life was her marriage to her loving husband, Paul, whom she met during World War II.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, in Buena Cemetery at Canaan Valley with the Rev. James Martin officiating. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.  From 17 Nov 2007.

Cressie Fitzgerald

Cressie Deliah McCray Fitzgerald, 91, of Rock Cave, died at her home Monday, Jan. 1, 2007.

She was born July 15, 1915, in Webster County, a daughter of the late Amos and Nettie Hamrick McCray.

She was united in marriage on Oct. 28, 1934, to John Boyd Fitzgerald, who preceded her in death Oct. 2, 1974.

She is survived by four grandchildren, twin granddaughters, Marilyn and husband, Jimmy Hyde, of Charlotte, N.C., and Marlene and husband, Carl Chidester, of Rock Cave, Melvin Fitzgerald of Roanoke, Va., and Angela and husband, Bruce Haymond, of Elkins.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Boyd M. Fitzgerald and Norman L. Fitzgerald; two brothers, Carl and John McCray; and two sisters, Jessie Yug and Janice Davis.

Cressie was an avid gardener and loved to be outside whether to work in her beloved garden, mow her yard or just relax on her porch and visit with family. She also loved quilting. She was a member of Canaan Memorial Church.

Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at the funeral chapel with Pastor Eugene Helmick officiating. Guy M. Foster

Guy Maxwell Foster, 75, of Buckhannon, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, at his home under the care of St. Jospeh’s Hospice.

He was born July 29, 1932, at Hemlock, a son of the late Samuel Guy and Beatrice M. Zickefoose Foster.

On May 22, 1955, he married Yvonne Rastle, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, David Wayne Foster and wife, Marsha, of Magnolia, Texas, Stuart Alan Foster and wife, Jo Ann, of Bowling Green, Ky., and Gary Maxwell Foster and wife, Susan, of Meadland community in Taylor County; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Foster of Texas, and Caley Foster of Kentucky; four grandsons, Samuel Foster of Texas, Gregory Foster of Kentucky and Nathan and Zachary Foster of West Virginia; a sister, Mary Lee Settle and husband, Charles, of Capron, Va.; a niece, Terri Leigh Williams of Capron, Va.; a great-niece; and a great-nephew.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Chuckie Settle.

Mr. Foster was valedictorian of his 1950 graduating class at Buckhannon-Upshur High School and received a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a master’s degree in education form West Virginia University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and taught in Webster County and St. Albans before moving to Washington Court House in Ohio, where he taught and became a school administrator. In 1983, he retired as superintendent of Miami Trace Local School District in Ohio, and returned to West Virginia, where he worked as manager of Fed One Savings and Loan and as an insurance agent for Farmers Mutual Fire Association of West Virginia. While in Ohio, he was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Washington C H Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, board of directors for Community Education and Recreation Association, chairperson for board of directors for Regional Special Education Resource Center, Ohio County Superintendents’ Association, Buckeye Association of School Administrators, State Advisory Committee for Vocational Agriculture, honorary member of Ohio Future Farmers’ Association and various teacher and principal association. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon, United Methodist Men and the Wesley Class where he was very active.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church where he will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Damon Rhodes and the Rev. Joyce E. Fowler

Joyce E. Flower, 54, of 2918 state Route 5, Leavittsburg, Ohio, passed away at 10:41 a.m. Feb. 14, 2007, in Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

Joyce was born Nov. 16, 1952, in Elkins, the daughter of Wilmer and Zelda (Zirkle) George.

She was an area resident for 35 years.

Joyce was a member of Braceville Christian Church. She was employed as a bus driver for 20 years by the Windham and LaBrae school districts. In her spare time Joyce enjoyed quilting and sewing with her friends, Patty Marsh, Carol Lutz and Carol Chupko.

She also enjoyed reading the Bible and cooking.

Cherished memories of Joyce will be carried on by husband, Edwin D. Fowler, whom she married on Dec. 23, 1974; sons, Erik Fowler of Ravenna, Michael Fowler of Champion and Robert Fowler of Ravenna; daughters, Patti (Jim) Kipp of Atwater and Tammy Fowler of Montana; brothers, Tim (Mary) George of Belington and Rick (Mary) George of Norton; sister, Shirley (Gerald) Schoononver of Niles, Ohio; and seven grandchildren. Joyce also leaves her four beloved Yorkshire terriers.

Preceding her in death was her parents.

Billy J. Fox Jr.

Billy Joe Fox Jr., 48, a resident of Junior, departed this life Thursday, morning, May 10, 2007, in Richmond Medical College of Virginia, following a heart attack while in Richmond attending the Crown Royal 400 from the Richmond International Race Way.

He was born April 23, 1959, at Elkins, a son of the late Billy Joe Fox Sr. and Barbara Jean Guire Fox.

Mr. Fox is survived by one daughter Tara Shreves and husband, Michael; six sisters, Diana Hill and husband, Lonny, of Bridgeport, Marian Heston and husband, Bob, of Chesnee, S.C., Tonya Ware of Inman, S.C., Barb Swartz and husband, Jim, of Belington, Kristi Daugherty of Elkins and Beth Fox of Gaffney, S.C.; two brothers, John Fox and wife, Rose, and Lawrence Fox and wife, Melissa, all of Turtle Creek; and two grandchildren, Steven and Ella Grace. Also surviving are 22 nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant brother, Joseph Fox.

He was a graduate of Philip Barbour High School, and before becoming disabled, he had been employed as a steel construction worker and had worked in the oil fields.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, mushroom hunter, and NASCAR fan.

He was a great sports enthusiast and a great West Virginia University Mountaineer fan and was a Protestant.

Vera R. Frashure

Vera Ruth Frashure, 86, a former resident of Melbourne, Fla., and for 2 1⁄2 years a resident of Elkins, passed away Monday, April 2, 2007, at Colonial Place.

She was born Nov. 11, 1920, at Odon, Ind., a daughter of the late Earl and Lora Pershing Freed.

She was married to Thurman Frashure, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Kathy Phares of Elkins; two grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Coers; and two great-grandchildren, Margaret and Jacob Coers.

Also preceding her in death was one brother, Dwight Freed.

Mrs. Frashure was a retired teacher having taught in Aurora and Indianapolis, Ind., Melbourne, Fla., Buckhannon and Parsons, Memphis, Tenn., Tupelo, Miss., Anniston, Ala., and Dayton, Ohio. During her retirement, she volunteered with the U.S. Forest Service. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elkins.

Ralph Marshall “Chick” Frey, 86, of Moatsville, died Monday morning, Dec. 17, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins, following an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 21, 1921, at Moatsville, a son of the late Floyd Thamer and Hazel Elizabeth (Marshall) Frey.

On Nov. 4, 1946, he married the former Wilma Lea Crites, who preceded him in death on May 24, 1986.

Surviving are one daughter, Sharron Sue Keene and husband, Roger, of Moatsville; one son, Ralph M. Frey Jr. and wife, Linda, of Moatsville; three brothers, Charles “Boomer” Frey of Belington, George “Gus” Frey and John T. Frey, both of Moatsville; one sister, Edythe Marsh, Philippi; five grandchildren, Kimberly Sue Keene, Roger Kenneth Keene, Kristy Dawn Stalnaker and husband, Frankie, Chad Douglas Frey and wife, Shana, and Brad Matthew Frey and wife, Elizabeth; four great-grandchildren, Kelsey Danielle Keene, Emily Ann Frey, Ian Marshall Stalnaker and Clay Douglas Frey.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret “Babe” Marsh, Christine Morris and Joan Frey; and by five brothers, Floyd Thamer “Bus” Frey Jr., James William Frey, Robert “Grapy” Frey, Daniel Harold Frey and Darl Eugene Frey; two stepbrothers, Donald N. Semmelman and Louis D. Semmelman; and his step-mother, Mildred Gail (Uphold) Semmelman Frey.

Mr. Frey was retired from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 0604. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Laurel Mountain Post 410, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 29 at Elkins, and the 40 and 8. He was a former member of Bigelow Lodge 52, A.F. & A.M. Mr. Frey was a member of Nestorville United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, from Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. The Rev. Bill Lanham will officiate and interment will follow in Cross Roads Cemetery, where Barbour County Post 44, American Legion will confer military rites.

Robert Fridley II

Robert Lee Fridley II, 54, of Route 1, Philippi, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007, in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 27, 1953, at Philippi, a son of Robert Lee and Mary Lee (Hardin) Fridley, who survive at Route 1, Philippi.

On Dec. 31, 1993, he married the former Kathryn L. Friend, who survives at Route 1, Philippi.

Also surviving are one son, Jacob Hardin Fridley at home; three daughters, Robin Stuart and Sarah Rector, both of Philippi and Erin Waugh of Jane Lew; and 11 grandchildren, Rachel, Bailey and Clay Stuart, Shelby, Johnathan and Allison Bennett, Daniel and Tiffany Rector, Jenna Waugh, Toby Robert Fridley and Erin Jenkins.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Toby Fridley; and by an infant daughter, Rochelle Lee Fridley.

Mr. Fridley was a 1971 graduate of Philip Barbour High School. He was a former employee of Badger Coal Co., Clean Harbors Environment and CNG Transmission. His work with Clean Harbors Environment included assisting with clean up in Pennsylvania and at “Ground Zero” in New York City, following 9-11. He was most recently employed as dispatcher and plant operator for Stemple’s Ready Mix Concrete Inc. He was a member of Broad Run Baptist Church at Jane Lew.

Mr. Fridley’s request for cremation will be honored. Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, from Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St., Philippi. The Rev. William Coffindaffer, associate pastor of Broad Run Baptist Church, will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at noon on Saturday.

Mary A. Froman

Mary Ann Froman, 73, of Geneva Street, Bridgeport, died on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at her residence.

She was born July 16, 1934, in Parsons, the daughter of the late Henry C. and Alice Digman Froman.

Miss Froman is survived by a sister, Louise Lipscomb of Thomas; sister-in-law, Ruby Froman of Pylesville, Md.; a nephew, Robert (Joan) Froman of Delta, Pa.; four nieces, Sherry (Duane) Hatfield of Vero Beach, Fla., Linda (Steve) Bellerose of Fredericksburg, Va., Bonnie (Wayne) Spear of Clover, S.C., and Janet (David) Podlaseck of Bridgeville, Del.; and numerous great-nephews, nieces and cousins.

She graduated from Parsons High School and the West Virginian Business College. She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital and several glass companies.

Miss Froman was a member of the Pythian Sisters Bridgeport Temple 14 for over 40 years. She was a past grand chief and grand secretary. She was also active in the Shinnston Rebekah Lodge 47 and the American Cancer Society. She served as the chairwoman for the Harrison County Daffydill Days for several years. She was also a member and a past imperial regent for Tautara Santha No. 11 Nomads of Avrudaka for many years.

Friends will be received at the Ford Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Bridgeport, on Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be celebrated in the funeral home on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne Spear presiding. Interment will be held in the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to People’s Hospice or to the American Cancer Society.
