D. Ward Eakin

D. Ward Eakin, 90, formerly of Buckhannon, began his eternal life on Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was a retired U.S. Marine Corps major and a Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor survivor who served with distinction throughout the WWII Pacific Campaign.

He was the eldest child of Peter Evard and Elizabeth Woods Eakin, and was born Jan. 4, 1916, in Skyles.

Ward was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Peter; two sisters, Helen Eakin Dias and Mary Eakin Fitzwater; and his own daughter, Susan Virginia Eakin.

Ward attended Weston High School and later graduated in 1939 from West Virginia Wesleyan College. Growing up, he worked numerous jobs at the family owned Eakin Lumber Co. of Central West Virginia.

Following WWII, on June 7, 1947, he married Margaret Jane Carpenter of Buckhannon.

He had a long career as an electronics-manufacturing manager retiring from Xerox Corp. in 1982. He later moved to Fairport, N.Y., and resided there at his death but never forgot his beloved West Virginia.

Ward is survived by Margaret, his wife of 59 years; sons, Paul and wife, Barbara, of Webster, N.Y., Thomas and wife, Meghan, of Pittsford, N.Y., and James and wife, Linda, of Fairport, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Andrew, Lauren and Alex. He also has several surviving nieces and nephews.

Always the reliable family leader, Ward’s love of nature and life left lasting impressions on those who knew him and joy to those who loved him. He will be missed but will continue to guide us through our cherished memories of him.

Wafford L. Elliott

Wafford L. “Dave” Elliott, 70 a resident of the Barborsville Veterans Home in Barborsville, and formerly of Wellsburg, died Friday, June 29, 2007, in Nella’s Inc. in Crystal Springs.

He was born on Oct. 14, 1936, at Jacksonburg, a son of the late Bert and Lancy Elliott.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Warren Elliott.

Dave retired from Bethany College where he worked as a baker and had previously worked as at several other colleges as a baker. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are two daughters, Lisa Rowan and husband, Pete, of Elkins and Heather Lantz of Beverly; two sons, David Michael Elliott and Terry Lee Elliott, both of Philippi; three sisters, Bonnie McIlvain and husband, Sonny, of North Ridge, Calif., Sandra Walnoha of Wellsburg and Pat Gatchell of Alliance, Ohio; four brothers, Frank Elliott and wife, Angie, of Lorraine, Ohio, Bruce Elliott and wife, Doris, of Wellsburg, Thomas “Tim” Elliott and Jack Elliott and wife, Marie, all of Alliance, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren, Chad, Sara, George, Ryan, Taylor, Blake, Megan, Elizabeth, Joshua and Samantha

Justin M. Elza

Justin Michael Elza, 22, a resident of Beverly, passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, in the Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department.

He was born Dec. 19, 1984, in Elkins, a son of Michael C. Elza of Elkins and Donna K. Elza of Beverly.

Also surviving is his stepmother, Tonya L. Elza of Elkins; maternal grandparents, Perry and Reta Dillon of Beverly; and paternal grandparents, Max and Sandra Elza of Ripley, and Mary Elza of Elkins. Also surviving are two brothers, Adam Christopher Elza and Michael Carl Elza II, both of Elkins; and one sister, Kassi Marie Elza of Elkins.

Justin was employed at Coastal Lumber Co. and enjoyed sports, hunting and fishing.

Christopher Alan Ends, 39, a former resident of Parsons, and a resident of Mocksville, N.C., departed this life Friday, Aug. 24, 2007. Death was attributed to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Christopher A. Ends

Christopher Alan Ends, 39, a resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of Mocksville, N.C., departed this life Aug. 24, 2007, at Mocksville, N.C. Death was attributed to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born July 27, 1968, at Parsons, a son of Sherley A. and Rhonda Jane Lawrence Ends, who survive in Parsons. On Sept. 16, 2000, in Parsons, he was married to the

former April Dawn Vanover, who survives at Mocksville, N.C.

Also surviving are three daughters, Trista Renee Ends of Elkins, Alexa Christine Ends and Lacey Nicole Ends of Mocksville, N.C.; two brothers; Danny Wayne Ends and wife, Tammy, and George Michael “Mike” Ends, all of Parsons; three nephews; Zach, Brittan and Nick Ends and one niece, Lalah Ends; his paternal grandmother, Lalah Ends, all of Parsons and maternal grandmother, Anna Lawrence of Hambleton.

Preceding him in death are his grandfathers, Doyle C. Ends and Charles A. Lawrence.

He was a graduate of Tucker County High School with the class of 1986.

He owned and operated Dream Builders of Mocksville, N.C. He loved to ride and race ATVs, he was an avid hunter, he also loved spending time with his family.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 1:30 p.m.

Kenney “Ken” Ervin, 45, of Morgantown, and formerly of Buckhannon, died unexpectedly at his home Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007.

Kenneth J. Ervin

Kenneth Joseph Ervin died unexpectedly in his sleep on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, in Morgantown. 

He was born at Buckhannon on Jan. 7, 1962.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Velta Hibbs Carpenter and Gerald Carpenter.  

He was preceded in death by his father, Willard “Bill” Ervin. Ken has joined his grandparents, Williard and Opal Ervin and Roy and Vervel Hibbs, in heaven. 

 Ken was a 1982 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School and had a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling and master’s level course work in special education from West Virginia University. Ken was the lead advocate for the Northern West Virginia Center for Independent Living in Morgantown for more than 10 years. He was a founder and state organizer for ADAPT WV and the Mountain State Direct Action Center. He served on the Consumer Advisory Committee for the Center for Excellence in Disabilities at West Virginia University where he reported on consumer advocacy issues. He was a longtime member of the West Virginia Fair Shake Network, a member of the Olmstead Advisory Committee and the West Virginia ADA Coalition and provided service to many other state and national organizations. Ken Ervin was a totally committed disability rights advocate. He worked 24/7 to protect and honor the rights of people with disabilities. Gov. Manchin said that, “Ken was the most passionate person I ever met.” Whether Ken was chaining himself to the fence of the White House in Washington, D.C., to a school flagpole in Monongalia County or helping someone move out of a nursing home, his commitment was beyond rhetoric — he lived what he believed. 

He is survived by his mother, Velta; his stepfather, Gerald Carpenter; son, Wesley Baker, who made his home with Ken. Aunts and uncles, Glenna and husband, Charlie Teets, Arlene Campbell, Teresa and husband, Junior Phillips, Rich and wife, Patty Hibbs, and Steven and wife, Wilma Ervin; stepbrother, Steve and Marilyn Carpenter and sons Travis and Dustin; and special friend, David Long of Buckhannon, also survive. Ken also leaves legions of admirers, loving friends and coworkers, his “brothers and sisters” with disabilities, and all the people whose lives were touched by Ken’s work. Ken’s last written words were for an essay in honor of West Virginia’s Disability History Week, Oct. 15-19. On Friday afternoon, Oct. 12, he wrote: “Much can be done when we raise our voices and join together. We cannot simply stand by and wait for someone else to take action. We must make our own history.”

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Heavner Cutright Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Donald Butcher and Pastor David Jessie officiating.  Interment will follow in Sand Run Baptist Cemetery.

Doyle R. Eskew

Doyle Ray Eskew, 82, a resident of Maryland, died Thursday, May 3, 2007, in the Veterans Administration Center at Martinsburg.

He was born Aug. 19, 1925, in Upshur County, a son of the late Norval and Freda Alkire Eskew.

Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Loudin and husband, Sam, of New Hampshire, and Fay Rapp of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews, and friends from Prince George Community College as well as his fishing buddies.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Fern Eskew and Vera Scott; and three brothers, Ellis Eskew, Kenneth Eskew and Merl Eskew.

He was retired from Prince George Community College in Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1952 and American University in 1961. He was a Christian by faith and was a veteran of World War II.

Leo Evers Evans, 80, of Petersburg, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at his residence.

Willard J. Ervin

Willard Joseph “Bill” Ervin, 69, of Buckhannon, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007.

He was born April 17, 1938, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Willard and Opal Shreves Ervin.

On Feb. 12, 1994, he married Mary Ellen Ellison, his wife and best friend, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Kenneth Ervin and wife of Morgantown; one brother, Steve Ervin and wife, Wilma, of Kansas City, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Kelli Dean and husband, Mike, of Buckhannon and Cindy Kotol and husband, Tom, of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Payton Kotol of Buckhannon; and four grandsons, Tommy Kotol, Camron Dean, Jordan Dean and Joseph Dean, all of Buckhannon.

Mr. Ervin was a 1956 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School, served in the U.S. Marine Corps, was a member of Buckhannon Elkins Lodge 1736, Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598 and the Buckhannon Country Club. He was a master barber and pawn broker and owned the Golden Razor and E-Z Pawn.

Wanda L. Evans

Wanda Lovelle Evans, 85, of Horse Shoe Run, passed away Oct. 3, 2007, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas.

She was born June 27, 1922, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Leo Clinton and Mary Dove Harper.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Alford Evans, on May 17, 1983.

Survivors include three sons, Roger and Connie Evans, Stephen and Diane Evans, all of Horse Shoe Run and Harper and Jane Evans of Charlton Heights; three sisters, Twyla Stemple of Leadmine, Doris Newdeck of San Diego, Calif., and Charolette Gibson of Casa Grande, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Roxanne K. Wilson, Rochelle K. Workman, Brandie L. Lively, Bryan W. Evans, Toby A. Evans, Stephanie Arnett, Melissa Dean and Beth Evans; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Evans was a member of Red House Lutheran Church.

Masel Everhart Jr.

Masel George “Bud” Everhart Jr, 63, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2007, in the emergency department of Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 1, 1943, at Elkins, a son of the late Masel George Everhart Sr. and Leerenna V. Everhart.

On Feb. 29, 1988, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Rosanna Mallow, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, David G. White and wife, Paula, of Norton, David H. Isenhart and wife, Juanita, of Elkins and Clayton D. Isenhart and wife, Vida, of Montrose; and one daughter, Leerenna R. Croston and husband Thomas, of Mill Creek. Five grandchildren, Joshua White, Dustin and James Isenhart, Thomas Croston Jr. and Dayton Isenhart, also survive.

Preceding him in death was one brother, Nathan S. Everhart.

Mr. Everhart was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 410 of Belington. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish. He was a member of Whitmer Church of God.

Velma R. Everson

Velma Roberta Everson, 89, a resident of the Point Pleasant Community, Rt. 2, Belington, died Monday evening, Nov. 19, at her home following an extended illness.

She was born August 1, 1918, near Clemtown community, a daughter of the late Edward Lee and Pearl (Ritter) Shaffer.

On May 29, 1937, she was married to Boyd Homer Everson, who preceded her in death on April 21, 2006.

Surviving are three daughters, Martha Lea and husband, George McCann, Diana and husband, Marvin Talbott, and Shirley and husband, Harry Whitesell, all of Belington; four sons, DuWayne Everson of Belington, Lawrence Everson and wife, Beverly, of Newport, Mich., Gary Everson and wife, Dottie, of Greensburg, Pa., and Philip Everson and wife, Noi, of Wilkesboro, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Imogene Mudge; three brothers Denver “Pete” Shaffer, Edward Lee Shaffer Jr. and an infant brother, Aubrey Shaffer; and by three granddaughters, Roberta Everson and Esta and Estelle Everson (twins).

Mrs. Everson was a homemaker and was a member of the Belington Church of Christ.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. Michael Phillips, minister of the Belington Church of Christ will officiate and interment will follow in the Barbour Memorial Cemetery.
