Stella Calain

Stella Ann Calain, 76 years, a resident of the Faulkner Road, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Pat Calain, following an extended illness.

She was born May 19, 1931, at New York, N.Y., a daughter of the late Emanuel Zahra and the late Bessie Zahra.

She was married to George Calain who preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 2006.

Surviving are a son, Dennis Calain, and wife, Pat, of Faulkner Road; daughter-in-law, Cynthia “Cindy” Calain of Elkins; two sisters, Esther Cali of Bricktown, N.J., and Charlotte Bardavid of Queens, N.Y., five grandchildren, Dennis Calain Jr., Dr. Kenneth Calain, Kathleen Zirkle, Christopher and Sarah Calain; and eight great-grandchildren, Christian, Alexis, Jessica, David, Brent, Alex, Matthew and Elizabeth.

Also preceding her in death besides her husband was a son, Thomas Lee Calain.

Mrs. Calain attended the schools of New York and was a homemaker. She was a member of Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. At 7 p.m. Friday, Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service from the funeral home chapel. Thomas L. Calain

Thomas Lee “Tom” Calain, 54, a resident of Leading Creek Road, passed away at 12:24 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, in the emergency department of the Davis Memorial Hospital. 

He was born Jan. 2, 1953, at Queens, N.Y., a son of Stella Ann Calain, who resides on Faulkner Road and the late George Lewis Calain Jr. 

On April 8, 1978, at First United Methodist Church of Elkins, he was married to the former Cynthia Ann “Cindy” Sheets, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Christopher George Calain of Morgantown; one daughter, Sarah Ann Calain of Fairmont; and one brother, Dennis Calain of Faulkner Road. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Tom was a Sgt. 1st Class with the West Virginia National Guard. He served as the fire direction officer with the 201st in Operation Desert Storm. He was an instructor at the Region Training Institute at Camp Dawson and retired from the West Virginia National Guard after 24 years of service.  He was a licensed insurance agent and was registered with the New York Stock Exchange. Tom was a former member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 A.F. and A.M. He coached youth baseball and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elkins.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Saturday morning, Nov. 3, he will be moved to First United Methodist Church in Elkins where friends may call from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., the funeral hour. The  Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley will officiate and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens. Full military honors will be provided at the graveside by members of Tygart Valley Post 3647, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the West Virginia Honor Guard from Camp Dawson. Lawrence Lester Calcamp, 83, of Eglon, passed away May 22, 2007, in Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland, Md.

Arbelia G. (Armentrout) Calhoun, 92, of Upper Tract, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at the home of her son, Reginald Calhoun, of Upper Tract.

Francis M. Canfield

Francis Marion “Frank” Canfield, 67, a native of Elkins, a former resident of Cumberland, Md., and more recently a resident of Concord, N.C., departed this life Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, in Universal Health Care at Concord, N.C.

Francis M. Canfield

Francis Marion “Frank” Canfield, 67, a native of Elkins, a former resident of Cumberland, Md., and more recently a resident of Concord, N.C., departed this life Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, in Universal Health Care at Concord, N.C.

He was born Tuesday, March 12, 1940, at Elkins, a son of the late C. Leon Canfield and Margaret S. Wickwire Canfield.

Surviving are one son, the Rev. David A. Canfield and wife, Debbie, of Concord, N.C.; one brother, Charles R. “Sonny” Canfield and wife, Juanita, of Miami, Fla.; three sisters, Margaret L. Buffaloe of Solomon, Md., Lois “Gail” Flynn of Silver Spring, Md., and Beverly S. Rodriquez of Pinto, Md.; three grandchildren, Ashley, Austin and Avery Canfield, all of Concord, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were two brothers; Gary Leon and Patrick Lynn Canfield.

Frank was a graduate of Allegany High School in Cumberland, Md., with the class of 1958, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served with the U.S. Army Reserve for three years. He had worked for more than 30 years as a program coordinator and controller for the Army Map Service, which later became the Defense Mapping Agency at Washington, D.C., and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church at Concord, N.C.

He was very friendly, and he was extremely dedicated to his work having received many awards including a special award for his work during Operation Desert Storm.

Lacy P. Canfield

Lacy Parker Canfield, 72, a resident of Route 1, Beverly, the East Dailey community, departed this life early Monday morning, Oct. 29, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1935, at Poe Run, Randolph County, a son of the late Cecil H. Canfield and Virgie Ellen Weese Canfield Webley Phares.

Surviving are three brothers, Howard and Merle Webley, both of Elkins and Jack Webley of Ohio; six sisters, Thelma E. Higgins of Buckhannon, Wilma Biller of Kerens, Shelby Weese of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Patricia Bland of Berkeley Springs, Lou Ella Creel of Virginia, and Martha Bowers of Elkins; a special companion of 25 years, Joan Crouch of East Dailey and her three children, Angela and Richard Fretwell, both of Elkins and Ronald Fretwell of Pensacola, Fla.; and her two grandchildren, Alicia Fretwell and Olivia Deville, both of Elkins.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Denver E. Canfield and Tom Webley; and one sister, Dolores Shannon.

He attended the schools of Randolph County and Elkins High School and had worked for Monongahela Power Co. for 28 years, retiring in 1990 as a bulldozer operator and excavator, enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman and loved his boat.

Lou A. Canfield

Lou Ann Canfield, 72, of Hardy, Va., formerly of Parkersburg, died Oct. 8, 2007, at Roanoke, Va.

She was born at Sutton, a daughter of the late Oley Jennings Wine and Jessie Lee Gillespie Wine.

She was a retired operating room nurse for St. Joseph Hospital. Lou Ann was past president of ARON, was the first person to receive the CRNFA and second person to receive the CNOR recognitions. Lou Ann was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Washington, where she was past president of the United Methodist Women Organization, a member of the church choir, the Fairview Gospel Singers, and held many office positions at the church. She was very active in the Parkersburg Actors Guild and was a six-year member of the board of directors of the Ohio Community Theater Association.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Jeffrey Home of Hardy, Va.; and one brother, Eddie Mac Wine of Bridgeport.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Canfield.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Crawford. Thurman Canfield

Thurman Canfield, 80, a resident of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 4, 1926, in Randolph County, a son of the late Calvin and Icie Lena Cross Canfield.

He was never married.

Surviving are five brothers, Troy Canfield of Stringtown, Barbour County, Ray Canfield and Truman Canfield, both of Montrose, Sance Canfield of Elkins and Ward Canfield of Pheasant Run; and three sisters, Pauline Arbogast of the Elkins Manor, Bessie Wilfong and Hazel Bedford, both of Montrose. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews including Dennis Arbogast, Lena Vandevender, Steve and Jeff Canfield, all of Montrose and Helen Howell and Lee Canfield, both of Elkins.

Preceding him in death were one brother, Willie Canfield and three sisters, Mary Eva Newlon, Geraldine Canfield and Anna Grace Null.

Mr. Canfield had worked at the Canfield Sawmill as a timber cutter and a mill worker until his retirement.

Alice L. Canon

Alice Lucretia Canon, 84, of Thomas died Nov. 23, 2007.

She was born March 17, 1923, at Thomas, a daughter of the late Walter Grant Helmick and Mary Belle Shaffer Helmick.

She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Willis Canon.

Surviving are two sons, Roy Eugene and wife, Phyllis Helmick, of Davis and Carl Brenton and wife, Janet Canon, of Thomas; two daughters, Romaine Carol and husband, Ed Arnold, of Davis and Betsy Lucretia and husband, Ferman Whitehair, of Davis; two sisters, Leona Cleland of Pomeroy, Ohio, and Romaine Stanton of Phoenix, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Terance W. Canon; four brothers, Hayes, Herbert, Roy and Eugene; three sisters, Nellie Bunnell, Jessie Marshall and Flo Dove.

She was a bookkeeper for Fairfax Sand and Gravel for many years. She was a charter member of Canaan Valley Baptist Church and a former member of Rebekah Lodge and Macbeeses.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mountain Hospice, 1410 Crim Ave., Belington, W.Va. 26250.

William Canter

William Canter, 69, of Volga, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

He was born Aug. 25, 1937, at Richwood, a son of the late Denny Canter and Elizabeth Riffle Center.

On Aug. 22, 1973, he was married to Connie Beckner Canter, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Betty Lemons and husband, Bobby, and Beverly Canter, all of Buckhannon; one grandson, Bobby Lemons II of Buckhannon; three brothers, Jack Canter, Doc Canter and Gay Canter, all of Buckhannon; and four sisters, Josephine Fitzgerald of Georgia, Betty Bowman of Buckhannon, Jean Claypool of Hackers Creek and Trecia Lowther of Buckhannon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Becky Canter; and several brothers and sisters.

He was an auto mechanic with the West Virginia Department of Highways.

Rocco A. Carbone

Rocco A. Carbone, husband of Maureen Carroll Carbone, passed away at home Sept. 6, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 29, 1940, Rocco was the son of the late Vincent and Rose Carbone.

The funeral Liturgy was celebrated Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church by Father Julian Marneni. The Rite of Committal followed at Spring Hill Cemetery.

He was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he was a lector and a Eucharist minister, a member of the St. Joseph’s Men’s Club and Knight’s of Columbus.He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and attended Northwestern University in Massachusetts and was an avid Marshall, Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He was employed at Service Wire as credit manager for 32 years.

He is survived by one daughter, Kathleen and Kevin Swecker; two sons, Christopher and Erica Carbone and Timothy and Stacy Carbone; six grandchildren, Leisa and Ann Swecker and fiance, Brad Wiggs, Sophia and Dominic Carbone, Maria Carbone and Joshua Walters; and one great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Wiggs. In addition, he is survived by two sisters, Millie Randazzo and Catherine Carbone; one half brother, Vincent Carbone; two half sisters, Frances and Antionella; three sisters-in-law, Mary Pat and Bill Spensky, Jean and Ron Schmid and Mary Margaret Carroll and Jim Curtis; two brothers-in-law, Bill and Pam Carroll and Mike Carroll and fiancee, Mary Ellen Booth; several nieces and nephews; lifelong friends, Jack and Jo Ann Wetherall and Big Al Novick; and a host of other extraordinary friends.

A special thanks to Hospice, Dr. Kimmey, Dr. Sharma, Dr. Roberts, Dr. Goetz and staff for all the loving care they showed Rocco during his illness.

Jean Carden

Jean Carden, a resident of Bridgeport, died Tuesday, March 1, 2007, at her home.

She was born at Weston, a daughter of the late Clyde McKinley and Blanche McKinley McKinley.

She was married to John Dana Carden, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are one niece, Mrs. Charles (Nancy) Voelkl of Kettering, Ohio; one great-nephew, Ted Voelkl and wife, Susan, of Ohio; one great-niece, Carla Howley and children of Ohio; and four cousins, Mary Ellen Nehoda and Lynn Nehoda, both of Nitro, Bill McKinley and wife, Jo Ann, and Elizabeth Mooney, all of Weston.

Also preceding her in death was one sister, Mrs. M.W. Steele.

She was the administrative assistant to P. Martin at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Jean was a graduate of Fairmont State College. She was involved with Upshur County Girl Scouts and for many years was a member of the board of Upshur County American Red Cross. Also, for many years, she worked tirelessly for the success of the Buckhannon Community Concert Association.

She was a life member of St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary, member of Buckhannon Arts Alliance, Upshur County Historical Society, worked with the Area Crippled Children’s Clinic, which was co-sponsored by the Buckhannon Rotary Club, and the State Department of Welfare, Emeritus Club WVWC, PEO, Daughters of the American Revolution Elizabeth Zane Chapter, American Association of University Women, West Virginia Hills Chapter of American Colonists and the Buckhannon Country Club.

She will lie in state at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home on Saturday, May 5, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour with Dr. Hebert Coston officiating. Interment will follow in Weston Masonic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to West Virginia Wesleyan Scholarship Fund in memory of Jean Carden. Alice J. Carpenter

Alice Jean Carpenter, 64, of Ellamore, died Monday, June 18, 2007, at her home.

She was born Aug. 20, 1942, at Akron, Ohio, a daughter of the late Peral and Ruby Radcliff Coakley.

She was united in marriage on Sept. 17, 1961, to James D. Carpenter, who survives.

She is survived by three daughters, Jackie and husband, Howard J. Miller, of Coalton, Judy and husband, Steve Kelley, of Northville, Ohio, and Jessecka Carpenter and significant other, Keith Gray, of Philippi; two sons, James Carpenter Jr. and significant other, Sherry Young, of Belington and Joseph and wife, Nina Carpenter, of Ellamore; 11 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Roy Coakley of Buckhannon; and two sisters, Pat Fowler of Ravenna, Ohio, and Iris Boyles of Pennsylvania.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Coakley.

Dale L. Carpenter

Dale L. Carpenter, 70, of Hacker Valley, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in Ruby Memorial Hospital as a result of a farm tractor accident.

He was born Sunday, Jan. 17, 1937, at Hacker Valley, the son of Opha Elbert Carpenter and Ada Pearl Fisher Carpenter of Hacker Valley.

Surviving are one daughter, Bonnie Quick of French Creek; one son, Ronnie Lee Carpenter and wife, Katina, of Buckhannon; two sisters, Gathel Wireman and husband, Harold, of French Creek and Thelma Currence of Sutton; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Carl Glenn Carpenter and Donald Carpenter; and one brother, Ray Carpenter.

He was retired from the Chrysler-Stanton Plant in Twinsburg, Ohio, after 33 years of service. He had lived in Ohio for 45 years. He attended Independent Baptist Church in Cleveland and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at the funeral home with the Rev. Fred M. Carr Sr.

Fred M. Carr Sr., 72, of, 455 Greenville Road, Bristolville, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 11, 1934, at Kerens, a son of the late Kenna and Dolly Raines Carr.

He moved to Bristolville, Ohio, 50 years ago.

Fred was employed as a welder for ITT Grinnell for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed hunting, bicycling, riding Argo and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Mary B. Roy Carr of Bristolville, Ohio, whom he married May 4, 1963; two sons, Fred M. (Janet) Carr Jr. of Kinsman, Ohio, and Tim (Marion) Carr of Bristolville, Ohio; two daughters, Peggy S. (Bob Hutchison) White of Champion, Ohio, and Sarah L. (Larry) Carr of Leavittsburg, Ohio; seven grandchildren; a brother, Warren G. Carr of Wayne, Ohio; and four sisters, Audrey DeBolt, Eulujean (Thomas) Dean and Annie Bryant Ashley, all of Elkins, and Sadie Mae (Robert) Smith of Oak Hill.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Merle, Hobert, Morris and Edward Carr.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home of Warren, Ohio, with Pastor Roger A. Norton officiating. Friends may call 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Interment will be in Sager Memorial Cemetery.  From 11 Jan 2007.

Martha E. Carr

Mrs. Martha Evelyn Ferguson Carr, 87, a resident of 259 Terrace Ave. in Elkins, and more recently a resident of Talbott Personal Care Home in Belington, departed this life at 4:25 p.m. April 9, 2007, at the care facility following an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Wayne County, Ind., the only daughter of the late Linville and Lena Luddington Ferguson.

On Aug. 29, 1941, she was united in marriage to John P. Carr, who preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 2002.

She is survived by two sons, Jay Carr and wife, Carol, of Hummelstown, Pa., and William G. Carr of Elkins; and one daughter, Marnnie Holden and husband, Richard, of Timonium, Md. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Kristen Ross, Chad Carr, Ryan Haden and Jon-Marc Haden; and two great-grandchildren, Ainsley Ross and Graham Ross.

Mrs. Carr attended Dennison University and also graduated from the Washington School for Secretaries in Washington, D.C. She was a longtime active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Elkins and was a very active member of the Elkins YMCA. Mrs. Carr was a devoted wife, mother and a very treasured friend to many in the Elkins area.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Robert S. Carr

Robert Stanley Carr, 83, a resident of Hendricks, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday afternoon, Feb. 1, 2007, at his home.

He was born Saturday, Jan. 26, 1924, at Gladwin, a son of the late Oliver Carr and Louisa Carr.

On March 29, 1947, he was married to the former Joy Maxine Burns, who preceded him in death Nov. 25, 2001. Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Knotts and husband, Kenneth Jr., of Dunbar and Sandi George and husband, Gene, of Elkins; and one brother, the Rev. Floyd Carr of Hendricks.

Preceding him in death was one daughter, Brenda S. Murray; five brothers, Glen, Warren, Pete, Hobert and Sturley Carr; and seven sisters, Lillie Plaugher, Retha White, Nellie Jenkins, Dovie Johnson, Mary Carr, Marjorie Lyon and Hazel Carr.

He attended the schools of Jenningston, was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army as a sergeant in India for three years, worked for the former Dorman Mills for many years and was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God at Rosendorf.

Thomas D. Carr

Thomas Dee Carr, 49, a former resident of Tucker County and a resident of Corunna, Mich., departed this life Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, in Owosso Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso, Mich. Death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Thursday, Aug. 28, 1958, at Barberton, Ohio, a son of the late Lindsey W. Carr and Gertrude Hedrick Carr. On June 25, 1983, in West Virginia, he was married to the former Pamela Moore, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Travis Carr of Texas; one daughter, Michelle Carr of Corunna, Mich.; two brothers, Terry Carr of Ludington, Mich., and Michael Carr of West Virginia; four sisters, Linda Canfield and husband, Charles, of West Virginia, Bonita Yeager and husband, Gene, Beverly “Bev” Simmons and Susan Rohr and husband, Jamie, all of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were one nephew, Lindsey Rohr; and two nieces, Katie Yeager and Ashley Lipscomb.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School. He worked for Hanson Brick Co. in Corunna, Mich. He was an avid baseball and softball fan. He coached baseball and he taught his son and daughter how to play baseball. He loved hunting and golf. His family and friends were most important to him. He gave strength to everyone he touched. He took the family patriarch role and he loved his family farm in Parsons on Shavers Fork.

Mr. Thomas Milford Carr, 88, a resident of Bowden, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2007, in Providence Medford Medical Center in Medford, Ore.

He was born May 10, 1919, at Sully, the youngest son of the late James H. and Fannie E. Carr.

Surviving are a son, Dale Carr and wife, Virginia, of Central Point, Ore.; a daughter, Rebecca Taylor and husband, Jerry, of Central Point, Ore.; and grandchildren, Jasmine, Errol, Isaak and Brighton Carr, Sara and Chris Meracle, all of Central Point, Ore.

Preceding him in death besides his parents were a daughter, Janelle Buser; sisters, Lullie Jones, Edith Armstrong, Alpha Huffman and Miriam Cooper; and a brother, Glenn Carr.

Mr. Carr was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He worked as a forest ranger for the U.S. Forest Service. His hobbies included gardening, woodworking and botany. He enjoyed family gatherings and hugs from his grandchildren. He will be missed by all.

Hobart Clifton Carrico, 84, a resident of Westview Drive, Elkins, departed this life early Thursday morning, April 19, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sunday, May 28, 1922, at Kingwood, a son of the late Homer Hobart Carrico and Lula Beryl Craig Carrico.

On June 2, 1946, he was married to the former, Mary Jane Marquette Carrico, who preceded him in death July 17, 1976.

In addition, he is survived by Mildred Raikes Goldberg; one son, Mark Clifton Carrico of Tallahassee, Fla.; two daughters, Joann Gabel and husband, Paul, of Elkins and Mary Jane Dennie and husband, John, of Tallahassee, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Jason Gabel of Columbus, Ohio, Melissa Gabel of Lexington, Ky., Lora Gabel of Elkins and Marin, Kaelyn and Braydon Dennie, all of Tallahassee, Fla.

Preceding him in death was one sister, Jean Carrico.

He attended the schools of Monongalia County, was a graduate of Morgantown High School with the class of 1940, was a graduate of West Virginia University with an associate’s degree and a doctor of jurisprudence degree, and he had served with the U.S. Army during World War II in China, Burma and India. Mr. Carrico had practiced law in Elkins before joining the Central Intelligence Agency. Upon his return to Elkins, he taught business law at Davis & Elkins College. He had traveled extensively throughout the United States and the world, having visited all 50 states and all continents except Antarctica. He was a member of the Signa Society (CIA), Phi Alpha Delta, Kappa Alpha, Elkins Lodge 1135, BPOE, H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus Council 603, Randolph County Bar Association, Elkins Masonic Lodge 108 AF & AM, Osiris Temple of Wheeling and Saint Brendan Catholic Church.

At Mr. Carrico’s request, his remains were cremated. The family will receive friends at Saint Brendan Catholic Church on Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at which time, the Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted. Father Donald X. Betty R. Carte, 77, of Salem and formerly of Weston, passed away Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, in Sunbridge Nursing Home in Salem.

She was born April 12, 1930, at Chemical, in Upshur County.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Rhoda Mauler England; and by her father and stepmother, Arvin and Mae Mauler England.

Her first husband, Raymond Donald Hensell, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Carte is survived by her husband, Francis “Frank” Carte of Salem who she married Aug. 31, 1970; two sons, Raymond Hensell and wife, Brenda, of Seville, Ohio, and George Hensell and wife, Linda, of Salem; a daughter, Carol Ann Hensell Mikulin and husband, Richard, of New Boston, Mich.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert England of Cleveland, Ohio; and six sisters, Dorothy Myers of Clarkston, Mich., Lula Fox of Cleveland, Ohio, Jean Adkins, of Pontiac, Mich., Virginia Turpin of Sevierville, Tenn., Louise Young of Ravenna, Ohio, and Beatrice Ellis of Cleveland, Ohio.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Mrs. Carte was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary of Cleveland, Ohio. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of San Mateo, Fla.

Richard S. Carter

Richard Stanley Carter, 64, of Arbovale, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2007, at his home in Arbovale.

Born Jan. 16, 1943, at Norristown, Pa., he was a son of the late Alan Stanley and Verna Pfleiger Carter.

Mr. Carter was a retired engineer and technician for both Cass Scenic Railroad and New Hope Railroad in New Hope, Pa. He was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving are his wife, Janice Mullenax Carter; a daughter, Mary Ann Smith and husband, John, of Hedgesville; two grandchildren, Hunter Wachter and Sierra Smith; two brothers, Raymond Carter and wife, Julie, of Jacksonville, N.C., and David Lee Carter and wife, Donna, of Norristown, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

James E. Cassell

James Elbert Cassell, 90, of Davis, passed away Sept. 10, 2007, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.

He was born June 13, 1917, at Huntington, a son of the late Robert and Laura Salmon Cassell.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Corrall Cassell; one son, Robert and Maria Cassell of Greenbackville, Va.; two granddaughters, Linda Crafton and Karen Dixon; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Snap, Bryan Snap, Zachary Dixon and Haley Dixon.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wallace, Herbert and Junior; and four sisters, Ona, Ethel, Sadie and Georgie.

Mr. Cassell was employed as a glass maker by Chatanooga Glass Co. of Baltimore, Md. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and was Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 2010.

Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home Wednesday and will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. Christlena Cassidy

Christlena Alberta Miller Cassidy, 96, a resident of Leadmine, and more recently of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, died Thursday evening, Feb. 1, 2007, in the nursing home due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Mrs. Cassidy had made her home with her son, Paul, and family, Sharon, Amanda and Chris, prior to going to Cortland Acres.

She was born Sunday, July 3, 1910, at Shaffertown, a daughter of the late Christopher Arnold and Harriet Louise Nethken Miller.

On May 22, 1928, she was married to Cyrus M. Cassidy, who preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1984. They had celebrated 55 years of marriage.

Surviving are three sons, John Wesley Cassidy of St. George, Charles Arnold Cassidy and wife, Sarah, of Guntersville, Ala., and Paul Richard Cassidy Sr. and wife, Sharon, of Leadmine; two sisters, Janet Louise Rhoades of Hambleton and Florence Freda Cogley of St. Cloud, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Preceding her in death was her twin sister, Martha Elizabeth Bohon; one brother, Joseph Roland Miller; two half brothers, Ruben and Robert Friend; one half sister, Deggie Alice Friend; and one daughter-in-law, Reland Bondell Cassidy.

Mrs. Cassidy was a former employee at Harper’s General Store and Post Office and Lipscomb’s Store in Leadmine. She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and hooking rugs. She was well known for making homemade butter and cheese. She was a Christian by faith and affiliated with Leadmine United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home of Davis today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Leadmine United Methodist Church with the Rev. Archie Neil Casto, 67, of French Creek, died Friday, June 29, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.

He was born June 15, 1940, at French Creek, a son of the late Archie O. Casto and Ada Mable Hyre Casto.

Surviving are two daughters, Shelia Casto of Pennsylvania, and Elizabeth Burk of Buena Vista, Va.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Coe and husband, Virgil, of Bellsville, Ohio, and Nancy Stinner and husband, Paul, of Pennsylvania; three brothers, Darreld Casto and wife, Debbie, of Pennsylvania, Dent Casto and wife, Glenna, of Rochester, Pa., and Terrie Casto and wife, Rita, of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Loy Casto.

He was a steel worker for Crucible. He attended French Creek Methodist Church and was a member of the American Legion.

Cecil M. Casto Sr., 72, of Buckhannon, the Bailey Ridge community, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.

He was born April 2, 1934, in Upshur County, a son of the late Hobart and Della Mae Casto Tenney.

He was united in marriage on Oct. 23, 1982, to Dortha Ann Bosley Casto, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Helen Casto Burnside of Buckhannon; one son, Cecil M. Casto Jr. of North Carolina; one stepson, Rocky Simmons of Adrian; one grandson, two stepgrandchildren and four step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Tenney and Johnville Tenney, both of French Creek; and one sister, Hazel Tenney of Buckhannon.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Arthur Tenney.

Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour with the Rev. Robert Heavner officiating. Virgie F. Casto

Virgie Fae Casto, 100, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.

She was born Sept. 9, 1906, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Luther Mick and Elta Strader Mick.

On Sept. 14, 1929, she was married to Harold Anthony “Happy” Casto, who preceded her in death Jan. 17, 1968.

Surviving are one sister, Hellen Easterday of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Junior Mick and Oral Mick; and three sisters, Ada Romine, Hilda Maxwell and Madeline McKinney.

She was the owner/operator of Happy Casto’s Store and attended Heaston United Methodist Church in Hodgesville. She was a member of Pringle Tree Extension Homemakers Club and was active in many church groups and community organizations. She graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan and taught school for 10 years in Upshur County.

Lewis Woodford Cave, 63, a resident of Baltimore, Md., passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, in Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

He was born June 6, 1944, in Randolph County, a son of the late Trevy W. and Mary Jane Phares Cave.

He had never married.

He is survived by one brother, Virgil Cave of Delaware; and four sisters, Carolyn Hedrick of Glady, Sylvia Booth and Sherri Finneyfrock of Baltimore, Md., and Delores English of Texas.

Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Joey, Richard, Bill and John Cave; and two sisters, Rose Davids and Linda Robertson.

Mr. Cave was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the U.S. Army and had worked as a millwright for Berry Plastics. He was a member of Maryland Steel Workers, the American Legion and was a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

Effie S. Cavender

Effie Smith Cavender, 89, of Marion, Ind., died at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, in University Nursing Center, Upland, Ind.

Effie was born Jan. 31, 1918, at Elkins, the daughter of the late Kent and Lulu Kelly Mouse.

She was married to Lewis E. Smith, who preceded her in death in 1948. She then married Cleopus Cavender, who preceded her in death in 1964.

She was an active member of her church where she taught the children’s Sunday school class and sang in the church choir in Charleston. Most recently, she was a member of The North-East Church of God, Marion, Ind. She loved to collect anything to do with mice and she loved her grandchildren dearly.

Survivors include sons, the Rev. Darrell and Barbara Smith, senior pastor of The North-East Church of God, Marion Inc., and senior chaplain of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Marion, Ind., and Allen and Melva Smith of Maryland; daughter-in-law, Alice Smith of Ocala, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Carol Wendt of Washington, D.C., and Joyce and Barry Clark of New York; sisters, Elfa “Sis” Lloyd and Martha Smith, both of Elkins and Irene and Burk Lowery of Catonsville, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jim Smith; two brothers, Guy Mouse and Glenn Moutz; and two sisters, Odessa Mace and Nellie Mouse.

Roger M. Chambers

Roger McKay Chambers, 70, a resident of Elkins, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at his residence.

He was born April 1, 1937, at Bristol, Conn., a son of the late Charles Duncan Chambers and Beatrice Dee Delano Chambers.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of the Plainville Fife and Drum Corp. He was a tool and die maker with Stanley Works until his retirement.

Roger is survived by two daughters, Mary Lee Teter and Jill Marie Mayer. Also surviving are two brothers, Ronald and Charles Chambers; five grandchildren, Megan Helmick, Anna and Kristen Mayer, Leigh and Jacob Kisamore; and two great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was one daughter, Laurie Kisamore.

Lee and wife, Karen, of Winston, Ore.; one sister, Judith A. Downs of Elkins; and four grandchildren, Kacie and Paige Phillips and Rhett and Colin Young.

Preceding her in death was one infant granddaughter, Leslie Young.

Eleanor was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1954. She had worked as a secretary for various businesses throughout her life, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star at Marlinton and was a Methodist.

Edwin M. Chase

Edwin Milton Chase, 57, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, in Louis A. Johnson Medical Center in Clarksburg.

He was born March 21, 1950, a son of the late Paul Edwin and Thelma May Lantz Chase.

Edwin is survived by three sisters, Cindy Long and husband, James, of Buckhannon, Jane Austinson and husband, Butch, of California, and Faye Hart and husband, Richard, of Saudi Arabia; a niece, Melanie Moreno of Florida; a nephew, Jamie Hart of Texas; several great-nieces and a great-nephew.

Ed was a skilled carpenter and was masterful when working with his hands and had a skilled patience for detailed work. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971.

Anna B. Chenoweth

Anna Bernice Chenoweth, 87, a resident of Baker Street, Elkins, departed this life early Friday morning, Sept. 7, 2007, at the Monongalia General Hospital at Morgantown. She had been in declining health for the past three years.

She was born Saturday, Nov. 22, 1919, on the family farm at Chenoweth Creek, a daughter of the late Fred Chenoweth and Virginia D. Bartlett Chenoweth.

She had never married. Surviving is her cousin, Barbara McCallum of Elkins.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Capt. John B. Chenoweth, U.S. Army retired, a former sheriff of Randolph County and State Senator at the time of his death; and Randolph Chenoweth, who operated the family farm.

Ms. Chenoweth was a graduate of Elkins High School and Davis & Elkins College. She started her career in early 1940 with state government in Elkins, as an employee of the State Department of Purchases in Charleston and in 1946 was employed as a secretary in the business office of Concord State College in Athens for a short time before returning to the family farm due to illness in her family.

In 1947 and 1949, Ms. Chenoweth accompanied the late State Senator Henry J. McKinley to Charleston as a personal secretary during legislative sessions. In 1955, she was employed at the Memorial General Hospital as the chief of the secretarial pool for several years and she accepted short-term employment with a Medical Center at Long Island, N.Y.

In 1962 she was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Washington, D.C., and retired in 1985 with 23 years of service as the assistant coordinator of management and communications for the Farmers Home Administration within the department. She returned to Elkins in 1992.

She was a member of the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center, the H.W. Daniel’s Post 29, American Legion Auxiliary and was a protestant by faith. She enjoyed visiting the ill and assisting her friends in their time of need.

Gary Garden will officiate and interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens at Elkins. Mildred Chenoweth

Mildred F. “Jackie” Chenoweth, 83, a resident of the Glenmore community, Elkins, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at 10:22 a.m. at her residence. She had been in failing health, however death was sudden.

Born July 23, 1924, at Woodbridge, Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert lee and Virginia Shanaholts Sullivan.

On April 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to John D. Chenoweth, who preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1984.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were three brothers, Chloman, Winfield and Wallace Sullivan; and one grandson, Richard Paul “Ricky” Chenoweth.

Jackie is survived by two daughters, Estelle “Tille” Biller and husband, Robert, of Dailey and Linda White and husband, Eugene, of Canton, Ohio; three stepdaughters, Brenda West and husband, Charles, of Helenwood, Tenn. Viola Higgins of Elkins and Ida Ruth Sweckert and husband, Leo, of North Carolina; three sons, Bobby Chenoweth and wife, Kathy, of Glenmore community, where they made their home with Jackie for 23 years, John R. Chenoweth of Elkins and Gary D. Chenoweth and wife, Cheri, of Buckhannon; two stepsons, Donnie Chenoweth and wife, Eilene, of Montrose and Ronnie Chenoweth and wife, Ritha, of Kelly Mountain; one sister, Estelle Carney of Dale City, Va.; and one brother, Floyd Sullivan and wife, Rosenna, of North Carolina. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, several stepgreat-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, several stepgreat-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Jackie was a homemaker. She welcomed people into her home with open arms over the years. Jackie had love in her heart for everyone. She never meet a stranger. Jackie was greatly loved by her family and friends. She will be greatly missed but will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her. “Heaven has gained a special angel.”

Nannie Eva Leary “Nancy” Chenoweth, a resident of West Main Street, Elkins, departed this life Wednesday morning, Aug. 22, 2007, at her home.

She was born at Cravensdale, Randolph County. She was raised by her grandmother and aunt, the late Nancy and Emma Leary.

On May 23, 1986, at the First Church of Christ at Elkins, she was married to Ronald D. Chenoweth, who preceded her in death June 18, 1992.

Surviving are one son, Steve Ray Ketterman and wife, Lisa, of Elkins; her loving sister and caregiver, Alice Ketterman and her son, James Ketterman, of Elkins; and her loving companion and constant caregiver, Don Scott of Junior.

Nancy was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1958, was employed at Garden Fresh and retired with 21 years of service from the A & P Store. She really enjoyed camping with Don and close friends and traveling. She enjoyed woodworking especially sanding. She attended Landmark Baptist Church.

Patricia Ann Monahan Chenoweth, 56, a resident of the Glenmore community, passed away Sunday evening, July 22, 2007, at her home.

She was born Sept. 16, 1950, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Howard Raymond and Mary Galeah Fisher Monahan. Surviving are a son, Allen Dale Chenoweth of Elkins; a daughter, April Marie Chenoweth of Elkins; two brothers. Howard Monahan of Sterling,Va., and Raymond Monahan of Gainesville, Va.; two sisters, Brenda Laughlin of Gainesville, Va., and Sharon Hall of Falling Waters. Three grandchildren, Tessa, Branson and Trevor Chenoweth also survive.

Also preceding her in death was a daughter, Andrea Renee Monahan.

Patricia was employed as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for 30 years prior to her retirement. Bernard Francis “Boney” Chewning, 64, a resident of the Highland Park community, Elkins, departed this life early Tuesday morning, May 15, 2007, at his home. He had been in declining health since March 2006 and death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1942, at Elkins, a son of the late French Roosevelt Chewning and Virginia Alice Sachs Chewning.

On Aug. 30, 1986, at Parsons, he was married to the former Marrianne Shifflet, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Robert Francis Chewning of Ohio, Bernard Francis Chewning of Morehouse, Kan., and Wesley French Chewning, at home; two daughters, Bernadine June Koval of Ohio, and Velvet Starr Nicholson and husband, Byron, of Elkins; three brothers, Fred Phillips, Teddy Chewning and Bernard’s twin brother, Donald Chewning, all of Ohio; seven sisters, Glenda Bennett, Sandra Pauley, Sharon Boggs and Barbara Schultz, all of Ohio, June Grimm and Delma “Bunny” Miller, both of Elkins and Marjorie Pope of Virginia; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and three special friends, Carla and Darin Nicholson and Earl Ward.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Napoleon Phillips; and one sister, Shirlia Beam.

Mr. Chewning attended the schools of Randolph County, was a construction worker and was employed by Summit Condos at Snowshoe.

Mr. Chewning’s request for cremation was honored. Mary Ann (Belle) Chidester, 86, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at 6:28 p.m. at her residence. She had been in failing health since 2004.

Mary Ann (Belle) Chidester, 86, a resident of Mill Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at 6:28 p.m., at her residence. She had been in failing health since 2004.

Born Dec. 6, 1920, at Long Run, she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Missouri Currence Shockey.

On Dec. 7, 1945, she was united in marriage to Virgil Chidester, an Army veteran who preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 1989.

Mary is survived by a daughter, Arlene Currence and husband, Charley, of Mill Creek; three sons, Larry J. Chidester and wife, Diane, of Elkins, Leonard Neil Chidester and wife, Libby, of Montrose and Joseph Lynn Chidester and wife, Barbara, of Mill Creek; two sisters, Martha Thornhill and husband, Bill, of Kansas City, Mo., and Myrtle Weese of Norton, Ohio; and one brother, Neal Shockey and wife, Edna, of Mabie. Also surviving are six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were three sisters, Edith Pastine, Mandaline Carver and Virginia Shockey; four brothers, Jacob, Howard, Richard and Bernard Shockey; and one grandson, Matthew Barr.

Mary was a homemaker and a member of Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church, where she was a former member of the choir and played both the guitar and harmonica. She was a well known quilter, having made the Queen’s Quilt for the Mountain State Forest Festival for several years. Mary also quilted for the Maple Syrup Festival in Pickens. She quilted over 935 quilts for people in the United States, Cuba and Canada. Mary was loved by many and will be greatly missed by her family and fiends, however she will remain always in their hearts.

Friends will be received after 6 p.m. today at Runner Funeral Home. On Saturday, Mary will be moved to Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church for visitation from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. Verna J. Chidester

Verna Jane Chidester, 88, a resident of Rock Cave, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at her home.

She was born July 25, 1918, in Braxton County, a daughter of the late James Luther Brown and Martha Didema Knicley Brown.

Verna was united in marriage on Sept. 29, 1941, to Willington Filbert Chidester, who preceded her in death on Dec. 30, 1991.

She is survived by five daughters, Jessie Friend and husband, Henry, of Rock Cave, Betty Friend and husband, Don, of Amherst, Va., Martha “Tiny” Shaw and husband, Clifford, of Buckhannon, Marcella Tinsley and husband, Junior, of Lynchburg, Va., and Kathleen “Kathy” Chidester of New Bethlehem, Pa.; two sons, Gary Lee Chidester of Blue Creek, Ohio, and David Henry Chidester and wife, Marilyn, of Springfield, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Fitzgerald of Alliquippa, Pa., and Pauline Drake of Elyria, Ohio; one brother, Paul Brown of Elyria, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Chidester was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Junior Chidester; one sister, Madgie Casto; two brothers, Estel Brown and Elbert Brown; one grandson, Danny Orick; and one great-grandson, Anthony Friend.

She was a homemaker, a member of Canaan Church and attended Rock Cave Baptist Church.

Friends will be received Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home in Buckhannon. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m Saturday, Feb. 3, at the funeral home with the Rev. Mary J. Chisolm

Mary Jane McCullar “Granny” Chisolm, 87, a resident of Harding, departed this life Saturday morning, Dec. 8, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health.

She was born Wednesday, March 17, 1920, at Coketon, Tucker County, a daughter of the late Rev. Charles McCullar and Emma Jones McCullar.

On Dec. 25, 1941, at Baltimore, Md., she was married to Richard Edward “Dick” Chisolm, who preceded her in death March 31, 1978.

Surviving are three sons, Henry Clinton Chisolm and wife, Jennifer, of Farmington, George Edward Chisolm and wife, Marlene, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Robert Elliott Chisolm and wife, Anita, of Harding; one daughter, Barbara Ellen Tyson and husband, Harold, of Snowshoe; one daughter-in-law, Mattie Oglivia Chisolm of Philippi; and 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death were one son, Richard Charles “Junior” Chisolm; one daughter, JoAnn Chisolm; three brothers, Richard, Weston and Delmore McCullar; and one sister, Daisy Hill.

She was a graduate of the Elkins Riverside High School with the class of 1941 and attended Davis & Elkins College. She was the housekeeper for the Presbyterian Manse in Elkins during the 1960s and was the head baker for the former Memorial General Hospital from which she retired in 1989. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church at Elkins, the Eastern Star and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Roaring Creek Post 5583, Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was a noted cook.

Richard C. Chisolm

Richard Charles “Junior” Chisolm, 60, a resident of Philippi, departed this life Tuesday morning, June 26, 2007, at Broaddus Hospital in Philippi. Death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Sunday, Oct. 13, 1946, at Elkins, a son of the late Richard Edward “Dick” Chisolm and Mary Jane McCullar Chisolm, who survives at Harding.

He was twice married. First to the former Constance Smith, who survives at Springfield, Mass. Second, on Sept. 29, 1995, at Harding, he was married to Mattie Oglivia Chisolm, who survives at Philippi.

Also surviving are one stepson, James Daniel Canty of Parkersburg; two stepdaughters, Angela Michelle Hatcher and husband, Timothy, of Parkersburg and Sherry Renee Mitchell of Elkins; three brothers, Henry Clinton Chisolm and wife, Jennifer, of Farmington, George Edward Chisolm and wife, Marlene, Phoenix, Ariz., and Robert Elliott Chisolm and wife, Anita, of Harding; one sister, Barbara Ellen Tyson and husband, Harold, of Snowshoe; eight stepgrandchildren, one stepgreat-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was one sister, Jo Ann Chisolm.

He attended the Riverside School of Elkins and Coalton High School. He had worked for the Kelley Foundry of Elkins, the Firestone Tire Co. of Massachusetts, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Co. at Connecticut, United Parcel Service of Elkins and was a Coal Miner for 28 years at the Consol Robinson Run No. 95. He was a member of the Mine Rescue team for 26 years and was a life member of BASS and the North American Hunting Club. He was a Corvette enthusiast, was a member of the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge at Fairmont and was a member and trustee of the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Willard Thomas Church Sr., 94, died at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007.

He was born Sept. 13, 1912, the son of the late Enoch and Maude Adams Church.

He is survived by his wife, Delores Fisher Church of Files Creek Road and his children, Andy Piercy and wife, Betty, of Alcoa, Tenn., Willard Church Jr. of Elkins, Joyce Church of Elkins, Candace Church and husband, Ken Miller, of Des Plaines, Ill., Ann Church and Gerald Church both of Beverly and Wade Church of Aurora, Colo. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Michael Piercy of Alcoa, Tenn., Joshua Piercy and wife, Emily, of Alcoa, Tenn., and Adam Miller of De Plaines, Ill.

Also preceding him in death were one brother and three sisters, Daniel C. Church, Ruth Channel, Elsie McDaniels and Kathleen Hanifan.

He was a graduate of Beverly High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Church worked as a heavy equipment operator and a sawmill operator.

Mary L. Cline

Mary L. Cline, a resident of Santa Maria since 1960, passed away at home on Nov. 30, 2007.

Mary was born in Elkins on Oct. 17, 1909.

She graduated from Davis & Elkins College in 1930 and taught sixth grade at First and Third Ward schools and English at Elkins High School where she was a librarian.

Mary married William Howard Cline (1908-1988) of Elkins in 1933.

She had three children, Mary Sue Asaidali, William H. Cline Jr. and Sandra J. Pedersen. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, David and Mark Asaidali, Mina Fisher, Maria Woodard, Cathy Boren, Stacy Budrean, Sharon Suchecki and Jay Pedersen; and nine great-grandchildren, Victoria, Christina, Keri, Arielle, Quiante, Megan, Tyrone, Brennan and Cole.

Mary was also a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1960. She was a kind and gentle soul and a good wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. at Santa Maria Cemetery with Dr. Brian Parcel of the First United Methodist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 311 S. Broadway, Santa Maria, Calif. 93454 or a favorite charity. Ollie Jane Clutter, a resident of Webster Springs, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Webster County Memorial Hospital in Webster Springs following a brief illness.

She was born at Webster Springs, a daughter of the late W. Ray Pritt and Carmel Lee (Arthur) Pritt.

She was married to John Clutter, who survives at Webster Springs. Also surviving are special friends, Gloria Gregory and Linda Meyers, both of Webster Springs.

Mrs. Clutter was a registered nurse and retired from Webster Memorial Hospital with 31 years of service. She had worked at Duke University Hospital for a short time, was formerly employed as a Webster County health nurse and a was a former teacher. She was a member of the Fountain of Life Church in Bolair. She also loved to read.

Mary Margaret Cooke Coberly, 75, a resident of Mountain View Drive, Elkins, began her eternal life of peace with the Lord Sunday morning, Dec. 9, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital. Death was unexpected.

Mary was born Sunday, July 3, 1932, at Monivea, County Galway, Ireland, a daughter of the late Delia Cooke and Barthalemeau Cooke.

While attending nursing school at Saint Stephen’s Hospital at London England, she met Ira J. Coberly who was stationed there with the U.S. Navy. Accompanying Ira to the United States, the couple married on Dec. 20, 1957, at Norfolk, Va. They were stationed in several locations before returning to Elkins in 1966 where they had resided since. They were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 20.

Surviving Mary besides her husband, Ira, are two sons, David Coberly and wife, Leigh, and Colin Coberly and wife, Jennifer Gulling; one daughter, Delia Loftis and her husband, John; and six grandchildren, Elise, Claire, Tyler, Bailey, Blake and Callie.

Preceding her in death were her five brothers, John Joe, Vincent, Jim, Oliver and Padraig Cooke. Mary, a native of Ireland, was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She had attended school in Ireland, was a nurse at Davis Memorial Hospital and was employed by Dr. N. Santra for approximately 24 and a half years retiring in 2002. She continued in the health care profession as a volunteer with the Ladies’ Auxiliary at Davis Memorial Hospital. She was dedicated to her faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. She was an active member of Holy Rosary Guild and the Choir of Saint Brendan Church. Through all times, Mary truly gave her heart and soul to all of us. She was truly loved by her friends and her family and words cannot describe how much she will be missed.

Monzo Coberly

Monzo Coberly, 69, of Buckhannon, died Friday, April 13, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.

He was born June 28, 1937, at Queens, a son of Charles and Eula Snyder Coberly.

He was united in marriage, on Jan. 19, 1962, to Lela Cutright Coberly, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Rick Coberly of Buckhannon and Michael and wife, Kathy Coberly, of Athens, Ala.; one daughter Vicki Coberly of Live Oak, Fla.; five grandchildren, Christine, Joshua, Beverly, Tyler and Corey Coberly; and one sister, Rena Smith and husband, James, of Fishing Camp.

He was preceded in death by his mother, four children and his stepfather, Harold Dorsey.

Mr. Coberly worked as a miner and was employed by J.D. Hinkle Rail Yard and Union Drilling.

Opal E. Coberly, 88, a resident of Century, died Friday, June 15, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Buckhannon.

She was born Aug. 24, 1918, at Czar, a daughter of the late Boyd Willis Herron and Pearl Ellen Loudin Herron.

On May 5, 1934, she was married to Burley T. Coberly, who preceded her in death March 29, 1981.

Surviving are one daughter, Lena (Coberly) Cook and husband, Frank, of Midlothian, Texas; two sons, Clarence L. Coberly and wife, Pauline, of Felton, Del., and Burley G. Coberly and wife, Pat, of Buckhannon; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Dessie Harris of Buckhannon; four brothers, Leonard Herron of Buckhannon, Lester Herron of Ashtubla, Ohio, Roy Herron of Ivanhoe, Va., and Elmer Laurial Herron of Spartansburg, Pa.

Also preceding her in death was one daughter, Helen (Coberly) Ancel and husband, Frank; one sister and four brothers.

She was a homemaker, member of Turkey Run Community Church and attended Century Community Church.

Retired U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. John I. Coe, 79, died June 5, 2007, at Bellevue, Neb.

He was the son of Adam and Irene Coe, formerly of Valley Bend.

She was born Nov. 8, 1927, at Clarksburg, the daughter of the late Claude E. “Joe” Zinn and Leona Marie Cross Zinn. On July 5, 1946, she was united in marriage to Robert Lewis “Bob” Coffman, who preceded her in death earlier this month due to an automobile accident.

Mrs. Coffman is survived by two sons, Rod Coffman and wife, Melissa Staggs, of Worthington, Ohio, and David Lewis Coffman and wife, Sheryl, of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; three grandsons, Kevin, Stephen and Mitchell Coffman all of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; and one brother-in-law, Charles Edward Coffman of Clearwater, Fla.

She was a graduate of Washington Irving High School, was a homemaker and a Protestant.

Alma was a devoted wife and mother. She kept a beautiful home where all felt welcome. Her cooking and quilting were exceptional. Her love for her family was endless, selfless and unconditional.

Mr. Robert Lewis “Bob” Coffman, 83, a resident of Laurel Mountain Road, Belington, departed this life Saturday morning, May 5, 2007, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Belington.

He was born Feb. 11, 1924, at Clarksburg, a son of the late Robert and Lillian Coffman.

He was united in marriage July 5, 1946, to the former Alma Marie Zinn, who survives at their home.

Mr. Coffman is survived by two sons, Rod Coffman and wife, Melissa Staggs, of Worthington, Ohio, and David Lewis Coffman and wife, Sheryl, of Raleigh-Durham, N.C; three grandsons, Kevin, Stephen and Mitchell Coffman; and one brother, Charles Edward Coffman of Clearwater, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Eugene Coffman.

Mr. Coffman was a graduate of Washington Irving High School and West Virginia University with a degree in business. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II in the European Theatre. He was employed as an accountant for Allegheny Ludlum Steel of Pittsburgh from which he retired in 1982. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 125 AF & AM of Belington, Laurel Mountain Post 410 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, an avid fisherman and a Protestant.

Friends will be received from Talbott Funeral Home 210 Brandenburg St., Belington, on Tuesday, May 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 am. Then at 11:30 a.m. from the funeral home chapel, a time of sharing and reflection will be conducted where family and friends will have the opportunity to share memories of Mr. Coffman. Ruth S. Coffman

Miss Ruth Serpell Coffman, 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center following an extended illness. Her last few years were spent at the Convalescent Center where she enjoyed the expert care of the very able staff.

She was born July 25, 1927, at Elkins, a daughter of the late George Henry Coffman and the late Ruth Serpell Coffman. Surviving are a brother, George Coffman and wife, Martha; and nephews, John H. Coffman and wife, Pamela, and William S. Coffman and wife, Emely, all of Greenville, N.C. Three great-nephews and one great-niece also survive along with her favorite first cousin, Jean Serpell Stumbo of Pebble Beach, Calif.

Miss Coffman was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkins, which she greatly enjoyed during her active years. She attended schools in Elkins and Orlando, Fla., and graduated from Elkins High School in 1948 and attended Davis & Elkins College. She enjoyed time spent with the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, John Hart Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution, Huguenot and 1812 Societies of West Virginia as well as the ARK and the Dove Society.

There will be no local memorial service. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C., with the Rev. Linda Kaufman officiating. Betty June Cole, 54, of Lost Creek, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at her home in Lost Creek.

She was born Sept. 19, 1953, at Volga, a daughter of the late Junior A. Nutter and Lora Radcliff Nutter Simons and husband, Joe, of Volga.

On Feb. 14, 2001, she married Timothy Cole, who survives at Lost Creek.

Also surviving are two sons, Russell Carpenter and wife, Kim, of Clarksburg and William Carpenter and wife, Jessica, of Washington; one granddaughter, Izabela Carpenter of Washington; two sisters, Elma Queen and husband, Vaden, and Ellen Beckner and husband, David, all of Buckhannon; two brothers, Wayne Nutter of Volga and Bill Nutter and wife, Melody, of Johnstown; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a housewife, a quilt maker and attended Chapel of Grace in Quiet Dell.

Richard “Dick” Charles Cole, 77, of Elkins, formerly of Hurricane, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at home after an extended illness.

He was born at Sharon, Pa., and raised in South Charleston and worked for Union Carbide Corp. until his retirement.

He is survived by one daughter, Catherine Cole of Elkins; sons, Scott and Steven Cole, both of Hurricane; grandchildren, Brianna, Jeremy, Joshua and Matthew; and great-grandson, Brandon.

Herman Dewey Coleman, 85, of Lewisburg, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home in Fairlea.

Mr. Coleman was born June 27, 1921, at Bentree, the son of the late Lloyd Russell and Danieth Ellen Legg Coleman.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Virginia Dell Lusk Coleman; one daughter, Virginia Louise Coleman of Lewisburg; four sons, Lloyd Whitton Coleman and wife, Jane, of Green Bank, Patrick Wayne Coleman of Green Bank, Danny Gary Coleman and wife, Helen B., of Green Bank, and Michael Douglas Coleman and wife, Diane, of Fairfax Station, Va.; one sister, Danieth Ruth Patton of Florida; one brother, Ralph Claude Coleman of Green Bank; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Coleman was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell Lloyd, Andrew Scott and Wesley Earl Coleman.

Mr. Coleman was a retired carpenter with NARO. He was a member of IOOF and a World War II Army veteran. He was a Methodist by faith.

Thelma V. Coleman

Mrs. Thelma V. Coleman, 93, of Harrisonburg, Va., and former resident of New Market, Va., slipped quietly into Jesus’ arms on Saturday morning, June 30, 2007, while visiting special friends in West Virginia.

She was born Nov. 18, 1913, at Harrisonburg, Va., the daughter of the late Harry and Maude Higgins.

Mrs. Coleman was employed for 33 years at Metro Pants in Harrisonburg, Va. She was a volunteer worker at Prince Rotary Senior Center in Harrisonburg, Va. Her friends there and being able to serve were some of the greatest joys of her life. She was a member of Believer’s Fellowship Church in Montrose.

Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Everett L. “Red” Coleman, on June 15, 2000. Also deceased are a son, Thomas Finchum Jr.; and a granddaughter, Michelle Coleman.

She is survived by four sons, Rusty Coleman of Timberville, Va., Robert Coleman and companion, Debby Clower, of Harrisonburg, Va., Everett L. Coleman Jr. and wife, Terry, of Okachobee, Fla., and Tim Coleman Sr. of McLeansboro, Ill.; two daughters, Darlene Raines of New Market, Va., and Sue Claypool and husband, Joe, of Harrisonburg, Va.; 16 grandchildren, Cheryl, Jackie, Bobby, Crissy, Angie, Eric, Travis, Chad, Nickie, Christy, Ashley, Joey, Jennifer, Paul, Nicholas and Daniel; and 19 great-grandchildren, Davy, Meg, Tayler, Torry, Hallie, McKayla, Keelin, Alley, Jericho, Andra, Jacob, Gage, Kyle, Skylar, Joseph, Dana, Jerralee, Austin and Madison.

Nanny loved her family, her friends and her God with a passion. We will miss her terribly.

Mary Ann Collett, 65, died Friday, March 16, 2007, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.

Mrs. Collett was born Nov. 24, 1941, at Upper Tract, the daughter of the late John and Lacy (Kimble) Ratcliffe.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Joe and June Ratcliffe.

Mary worked at Wampler Foods in Harrisonburg as a grader for more than 27 years.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Dorsey Collett; one son, Robert Collett; two daughters, Joyce Collett and Louise Hummel and her husband, Roy, all of Harrisonburg, Va.; one sister, Shirley Champ of Upper Tract; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pastor Tony Martin will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, Va. The burial will be private.

Philip T. Collett

Philip Thomas “Tommy” Collett, 71, of East Dailey, passed away Thursday evening, December 20, 2007 in the Emergency Department of Davis Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health since having surgery for bladder cancer in August of 2007.

Tommy was born May 24, 1936, at East Dailey, a son of the late Glen R. Collett and Evelyn Stokes Collett. He was never married and resided in East Dailey under the care of his sister, Janet Swecker.

Also surviving are one brother, Ray Collett and wife, Lorena, of East Dailey; three sisters, Eileen Price of East Dailey, Deloris Kerns of Columbia, S.C., and Janet Swecker of East Dailey. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceding him in death was one brother, Glen Collett Jr.; three brothers-in-law, C.J. “Gabby” Price, Delbert Kerns and Tom Swecker; a niece, Mary K. Hamrick; a nephew, Ronald “Ronnie” Price; and a special grandnephew, Mikie Price.

Tommy was one of God’s special children who was born with a handicap. He loved people, and never met a stranger — always ready to talk to everyone. He looked forward to getting the daily paper and having someone read it to him. He loved to ride his riding mower. Until last summer, he mowed the field near his home. When anyone came to visit, he would always take them to the garage to show them his tractor.

Tommy worked at Coastal Lumber Co. for 20 years until his retirement in 1981. He was a 20-year member of the Elkins Eagles Club and a member of the Tygart Valley Fire Department.

Friends may call on Sunday, Dec. 23, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Margaret “Peg” Mae Collette, 54, a resident of Route 4, Philippi, and a former resident of Route 1, Hambleton, passed away Friday, June 22, 2007, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 20, 1952, at Parsons, a daughter of Dorothy (Pennington) Winkler of Philippi and the late Luther Winkler of Philippi.

She was united in marriage Oct. 21, 1972, to Moody Eldridge Collette, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, William Keith Collette of Parsons and Jacob Lee and wife, Regina Collette, of Philippi; two sisters, Linda and husband, the Rev. Pat Cassidy, of St. George and Ruth and husband, Steve Marks, of Liberty, N.C.; two grandchildren, Hannah Nicole and Preston James Collette of Philippi; three nephews, Steven Craig and wife, Tammy Marks, of Mt. Sterling, Ky., Charles and wife, Susan Marks, of Parsons and Charles and wife, Madeline Arnold, of Hendricks.

Peg worked as CFO at Appalachian Mental Health in Elkins. She also worked at Sharpe Hospital as assistant administrator and CFO and also at St. George Medical Clinic as CEO. Peg was a member of Overfield Community Church, was past member of River City Garden Club, was past member of Tucker Community Endowment Foundation board of directors and was a past member of the Governor’s Community Action Board. Peg received an award as one of the outstanding young woman of America in 1987. Peg received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Fairmont State College and master’s in business administration from Wesleyan College.

Collier and fiancé, Julie Koontz, of Brandywine and John Andrew Collier and fiancé, Lorie Rader, of Mill Creek; one daughter, Penny McKenzie and husband, Andrew, Springdale, Ark.; one brother, Bill Riggleman and wife, Jane, of Monterville; two sisters, Georgia Lamoreaux and husband, Louis, of Monterville and Sharon Shiflett and husband, Chris, of Virginia; and seven grandchildren, Randall Collier, Jessica Collier, Cole Collier, Josey Collier, Kaitlin McKenzie, Colin McKenzie and Ashley Collier.

Preceding her in death was one grandson, Trenton Rader Collier.

Faye was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School. She was a homemaker, an excellent cook, a loving wife and a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a Protestant by faith.

Daniel David Collins, 30, passed away early Wednesday, March 14, 2007, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born March 12, 1977, at Lexington, Ky., a son of David M. Collins and Rebecca J. Mason Collins of Elkins. Also surviving are his wife, Holly J. Haupin Collins, and two daughters, Haley Marie and Hannah Hope Collins, all of Weston. One brother, Gabriel Michael Collins and wife, Jesse, of Hurricane; two sisters, Rachel Hope Collins McCart and husband, Ryan, of Oceanside, Calif., and Cindy Sue Collins Harris of Elkins; his paternal grandmother, Ella M. Collins of Elkins; and several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins also survive.

Preceding him in death was his paternal grandfather, Paul D. Collins; and maternal grandparents, Robert L Mason and June R. Reynolds Mason.

Daniel attended Elkins High School and graduated from the West Virginia Mountain Challenge Academy in 1995. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, attended Middle Georgia Technical Institute and received an associate degree in aircraft structural technology. Daniel was employed by Rest Care Inc. in Clarksburg, but really found his fulfillment in carpentry. He performed “ handyman” jobs for people and helped restore the community of Berlin, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He dearly loved his family, and his two little girls were the joy of his life.

Kenneth Collins, 70, of Philippi, died Monday, June 18, 2007, in Mansfield Place, following an extended illness.

He was born May 16, 1937, at Philippi, a son of the late Riley and Laura (Kennedy) Collins.

His wife, Sara Jo (Mayle) Collins, preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 1998.

Surviving are one daughter, Rosanna Poling of Grafton; four sons, Kenneth Ray Collins of Minerva, Ohio, Perry Lee Collins and Kirt Randal Collins, both of Philippi, and Kenny Paul Humphreys in Delaware; one sister, Cora Mae Mayle of Canton, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Justin, Kirk and Lisa Collins of Minerva, MacKenzie Collins of Philippi, Carma Collins of Philippi, Brittney Williams and Brealynne Williams, both of Grafton, Jeremy Poling of Philippi, Joseph Poling of Grafton and Kenny Paul Humphreys Jr., in Delaware; four great-grandchildren, Isaac Poling, Shayla Jo Poling, Haylee Poling and Korin Collins; and an expected great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Timothy and Marcus; by one daughter, Lisa; and by a brother, Richard Collins.

Mr. Collins was a former equipment operator and driver in surface mining. He was Protestant by faith.

Gay Madora Hannah Conrad, 88, a former resident of Valley Head, and since 1999, a resident of Lake Charles, La., departed this life Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at Lake Charles.

She was born Monday, June 2, 1919, at Valley Head, a daughter of the late Forrest Lee Hannah and Rosella Blaine Marple Hannah.

In 1936, she was married to Glen Porter Conrad, who preceded her in death on April 25, 1999. They had celebrated 62 years of marriage.

Surviving are one son, Keith L. Conrad and wife, Virginia, of Moss Bluff, La.; one sister, Pattie Waybright of Canton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Debra, Glen, Jeffrey and Jeanette; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Guy and Henry Hannah; and two sisters, Clara Crickard and Elva Arbogast.

Gay attended the schools of Valley Head and Mill Creek, was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith. She was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Eastern Star and enjoyed crocheting afghans and other needlework. She was an avid reader. Her family was very important to her and she especially loved the children.

Pearl S. Conrad

Pearl S. Conrad, 88, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.

She was born March 18, 1919, at Adrian, a daughter of the late Winfred Snyder and Flossie Payne Snyder.

On June 6, 1930, she was married to Elfred J. Conrad Sr., who preceded her in death Sept. 14, 1997.

Surviving are five sons, Edward W. Conrad and wife, Maureen, of Camp Hill, Pa., Paul R. Conrad and wife, Deb, of Rock Cave and Elfred J. Conrad Jr. and wife, Lupe, of El Paso, Texas, George C. Conrad and wife, Patricia, of Buckhannon and Joseph C. Conrad of Arora, Colo.; three daughters, Hilda L. Ashcraft and husband, William, of Cumberland, Md., Evelyn Suttle of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Doreane Mosser and husband, Daniel, of Martinsburg; 20 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eydthe Ortiz of Lompac, Calif., and Helen Ruth Switztalski of Edgewood, Md.

Also preceding her in death were two daughters, Ruth Ellen Conrad and Patricia Starkey; two sisters; and four brothers.

She was a U.S. postmaster and Baptist by faith.

Hospital Corpsman Matthew Gale Conte, U.S. Navy, 22, was killed in Iraq on Feb. 1, 2007.

Matthew was born at Dover, Ohio, a son of Gale and Lureen Conte of Jacksonville, Fla. His father, Gale, was a former resident of Elkins.

He is survived by one brother, Michael and wife, Shana, and their children, Tristan, Cassandra and Christopher; one sister, Lora Conte and her son, Ethan; grandparents, Grace “Dee Dee” Conte of Jacksonville, Fla., and formerly of Elkins, and Eileen and John Manz of Port St. Lucy, Fla.; and aunts and uncles, Grace “Kitty” Smith and husband, Gene, of Alpena, Conna and Bill Leary, Jackie Hymes, George and Olive Conte and Dianna and Jerry Wise, formerly of Elkins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, George Conte.

Matt loved visiting the farm at Alpena and fishing in Uncle Gene’s pond.

He was a 2003 graduate of Field High School. He was killed while fighting enemy forces near Baghdad.

Violet G. Coonts

Violet Gadd Coonts, formerly of Buckhannon, died Jan. 18, 2007, in Friends Nursing Home in Sandy Spring, Montgomery County, Md.

She was born Sept. 23, 1913, at Charleston, the daughter of the late Lundy John Gadd and Vada Cart Gadd.

On July 15, 1941, she was married to Gilbert Gray Coonts, a local attorney of the law firm of Hymes and Coonts, who predeceased her.

Mrs. Coonts was a graduate of Charleston High School and West Virginia University. She also attended Mason School of Fine Art, Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston). While a teacher for more than 25 years in Kanawha and Upshur County high schools, she also served as advisor to the yearbook and newspaper at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. In 1963, she was awarded a journalism scholarship to Penn State University by the Wall Street Journal. During her last several years at Buckhannon-Upshur High School, she taught art, which was her life-long hobby. An artist all of her adult life, she went on to teach creative expression at West Virginia Wesleyan College for three years after leaving Buckhannon-Upshur High School. She was also a teacher of oil painting in the local adult education program. Mrs. Coonts had “one woman shows” at the University Medical Center, Gibson Memorial Library, Stonewall Jackson Library and West Virginia Wesleyan College. Mrs. Coonts moved to Buckhannon in 1948 when her late husband entered the practice of law as an associate of the late Myron B. Hymes. She resided on Highland Drive from 1954 until 1998 when she moved to Howard County, Md., to be closer to her sons. Mrs. Coonts was active in the local community and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and of the United Methodist Women. She was also a life member of the National Education Association and a member of the Buckhannon PEO, where she served as secretary. She was a member and past president of the Alumni Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta of West Virginia Wesleyan College. She belonged to the Upshur County Visual Arts Guild, was a member of Eastern Star and a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Coonts was well-known locally as an artist who loved to paint seascapes, flower studies and landscapes. She also was recognized as a portrait painter. Many of her paintings are owned by local residents and several of her portrait paintings are on display at West Virginia Wesleyan College. She faithfully entered the Strawberry Festival Art Exhibit for many years and was a strong proponent of educating people of all ages about the beauty and inspiration of art. Over the years, she received several “first place” and “best of show” awards in various West Virginia art exhibits.

Mrs. Coonts is survived by her two sons, Stephen Coonts of Colorado Springs, Colo., and John Coonts of Fulton, Md.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home in Buckhannon. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Shirley Geneva Lewis Coontz, 71, a resident of South Davis Avenue, Elkins, departed this life early Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, 2007, at her home. Death was unexpected.

She was born Sunday, Dec. 15, 1935, at Beverly, a daughter of the late Gilbert S. Lewis and Eva N. Simmons Lewis.

On June 12, 1959, at Parsons, she was married to Keith W. Coontz, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Kimberly A. Garcia and husband, Oswaldo, of Gaithersburg, Md.; three brothers, Don Eddie Lewis and wife, Anita, of California, Jim S. Lewis and wife, Lois, of Philippi and Dan J. Lewis and wife, Patty, also of Philippi; one sister, Pauline S. Lewis of Elkins; one grandson, Richard A. Garcia of Gaithersburg, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were one brother, W. Richard Lewis; and one sister, Edna Marie Wentz.

Shirley was a graduate of Beverly High School with the class of 1954. She had worked for C&P Telephone Co. and Bell Atlantic as an operator for 23 years and later worked for Appalachian Community Health Center. She was a homemaker, loved crossword puzzles and was an avid fan of the West Virginia University Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Versie M. Coontz

Versie Mabel Coontz, 90, of Urbana, Ohio, formerly of Talbott community, Belington, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2007, in Community Hospital Health Care, Springfield, Ohio.

She was born May 2, 1917, at West Union, a daughter of the late William Perry and Martha Ellen (Cottrill) Snyder.

Her husband, Ernie B. Coontz, preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 1978.

Surviving are two sons, Franklin Coontz and wife, Sandy, of Springfield, Ohio, and Jim Coontz, and wife, Frances, in Georgia; one daughter, Geraldine Day of Springfield, Ohio; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren..

She was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Coontz was a homemaker. She attended the Church of the Nazarene in Springfield, Ohio, and formerly attended the Talbott United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. Interment will follow in Talbott Cemetery.

Margaret Copeman

Margaret Naoma Copeman, 92, of Elkins, a lifelong resident of Preston and Randolph counties, died Saturday, June 9, 2007, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center at Elkins, where she had been a resident for the last six years.

The daughter of the late Charles T. “Pig” and Martha Glover Collins, she was born Dec. 4, 1914, at Terra Alta.

Margaret is survived by two sons, Fred Copeman and his wife, Shirley, of Silver Springs, Md., and Doug Copeman and his wife, Eleanor, of Elkins; three daughters, Barbara Kemp and her husband, Albert, of Charleston, Tenn., Irene Graves of Cleveland, Tenn., and Doreen Widney and her husband, Jay, of Beverly; a sister, Hazel Stanton of Columbia City, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her faithful therapy dog, Petie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph G. Copeman on Sept. 30, 1990; two sons, Ralph Jr. and James Copeman; four brothers, Alvin “Cy,” Floyd M. “Boots,” James and infant, Harold Collins; two sisters, Mildred Collins and Gladys Weller; and a granddaughter, Michelle Lane Widney.

Mr. Corder was also preceded in death by one brother, Paul Corder.

He was owner/operator of Corder Tractor for 28 years and owned the Kanawha Theater for 12 years. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of BPOE 1736, a member of Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598 and a volunteer for the Salvation Army for many years. He was an avid card player and die hard sports fan of West Virginia University, the Steelers, the Pirates and Buckhannon Upshur High School.

Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Wednesday, Sept. 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at which time a memorial service will be conducted with the Rev. William C. Eskew Jr. and the Rev. David Fisher officiating. Buckhannon Elks Lodge 1736 will provide funeral rites.

She was born Nov. 28, 1927, at Kasson, a daughter of the late Thomas and Goldie Bell Kelley Hardin.

She was united in marriage May 15, 1947, at Oakland, Md., to Blaine Corder, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Bennie and wife, Cathy Corder, and Jason and wife, Brenda Corder, all of Philippi; two sisters, Peggy Amelia and husband, Ernie Parsons, of Parsons and Betty Ann and husband, Donald Jo Poling, of Thornton; one brother, Duard Gene Sr. and wife, Berneda Hardin, of Moatsville; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Corder Ball, Brian Corder, Eric Corder, Allison Corder, Ethan Corder, Tayla Thomford and Cody Hockenberry; and two great-grandchildren, Logan and Hailey Ball.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Dr. Mason Todd Corder.

Mrs. Corder was a homemaker, a member of Philippi Garden Club and AARP. Jo Claire’s enjoyment for cooking was exemplified by rearing the boys with their hearty appetites. Her love for people was expressed by taking the time to talk and reminisce. Her compassion for pets was apparent, especially with her cat, Dottie. Mrs. Corder joined Sutton Baptist Church in 1952. She transferred her membership to Philippi Baptist Church where she was a long-time member of the Mary Martha Sunday School class. She enjoyed the church fellowship. Her faith was strong and she often read the Bible. Mrs. Corder was a graduate of Fairmont State College.

Mason T. Corder

Dr. Mason T. Corder, 49, a highly respected physician and resident of Elkins, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007.

He was born April 13, 1957, at Radford, Va., and was raised in Barbour County. He was the son of Blaine and Jo Claire Hardin Corder of Philippi.

His wife, Deborah Joyce Talbott Corder, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Eric Blaine Corder and Ethan Todd Corder; one daughter, Allison Claire Corder; two brothers, Benson Patrick Corder and wife, Cathy, of Philippi and Jason Page Corder and wife, Brenda, of Idamay; and maternal grandmother, Goldie B. Hardin of Kasson.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Laco B. and Roxie Eckels Corder; and maternal grandfather, Thomas Hardin.

Dr. Corder graduated from Philip Barbour High School in 1975. He completed his undergraduate education at West Virginia University in 1979, and in 1986, graduated from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Todd completed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia and in 1990, joined the medical staff at Davis Memorial Hospital, where he served as chief of the medical staff from 1997 to 1999. He was a member of Davis Health System/Davis Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2006 and served as the board’s chairman from 2001 to 2002. He also was a member of Davis Health System Board of Trustees Compliance Committee. He received numerous awards including the West Virginia Family Physician of the Year in Home Health. His hobbies included drag racing and deep-sea fishing.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at Philippi Baptist Church.

Hobert Henry Corley, 87, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2007, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 2, 1920, at Junior, a son of the late Burr Freeman and Rose Hess Corley.

On Feb. 19, 1949, in Fairmont, he was married to Teresa Ann Falcone, who preceded him in death in 1995.

Surviving are one son, Hobert Henry Corley Jr. and wife, Jane, of Elkins; grandchildren, Teresa Mae-Rose Goddard and husband, Anthony, of Toyota, Japan, Burr Angelo Corley of Morgantown, Laura Marie Kennedy and husband, Ryan, of Clarksburg and George Alston Corley of Elkins; great-grandson, Henry Richard Kennedy of Clarksburg; and sisters, Rosalie Burcaw and husband, Charles, of Linthicun, Md., Lorain Walters and husband, George, of Westminster, Md., and Lucy Gott and husband, Amos, of Morgantown.

Preceding him in death was one sister, Florence Dunn Cappadony.

Mr. Corley was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School and earned degrees from Davis & Elkins College and West Virginia University. He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the Battle of the Bulge and the European Theatre with the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the Elkins Lions Club, a longtime member of the Petersburg Kiwanis Club, and started the Key Club at Petersburg High School and advised the Key Club at Martinsburg High School. He was the advisor to the Science Club at both Petersburg and Martinsburg high schools. He also won a studying fellowship to the University of North Carolina in 1961. In 1970, Mr. Corley was chosen to represent the state of West Virginia with a fellowship to teach science in Australia. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Mary E. Corley

Mary Ellen Corley, 83, of Route 3, Belington, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 23, 2007, in Talbott Personal Care Home, Belington, following an extended illness.

She was born March 11, 1924, at Belington, a daughter of the late Okey and Ella (Row) Hymes.

On Sept. 27, 1942, she was married to Hoy Pershing Corley, who preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1996.

Survivors include one son, Daniel Duane Corley and wife, Anna, of Belington; one granddaughter, Erin Corley of Belington; one brother, Robert Hymes and wife, Glenda, of Belington; two sisters, Levera Everson of Belington and Jeanne Hymes of Richmond, Va.; a nephew, Fred Hymes and wife, Amy, of Richmond, Va.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Warren Hymes, Joe Hymes, Billy Hymes and John Hymes.

Mrs. Corley had worked as a nurses aide for Broaddus Hospital and Barbour County Good Samaritan Center. She was also a former employee of Maskateers in Belington and had worked as a housekeeper for area families. She had been active in the Junior Elementary School PTA. She enjoyed vegetable gardening and canning, cooking, quilting and, generally, doing for her family.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. The Rev. F. L. “Wink” McQuain will officiate and interment will follow in Hymes Cemetery near Junior.

Friends called at the funeral home Tuesday and and may call from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. today. The family requests memorials in the form of contributions to Mountain Hospice, P.O. Box 173, Belington, W.Va. 26250.

Paul P. Corley

Paul Porter “Red” Corley, 86, a former resident of the Laurel Mountain Road, Elkins, and more recently a resident of Valentine’s Personal Care Home, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, June 26, 2007, at the home.

He was born Wednesday, July 28, 1920, at Weaver, a son of the late Porter Corley and Dora Talbott Corley.

He was twice married. First to the former Maude Harris, who survives. Second on Nov. 15, 1951, at Elkins, he was married to the former Velma Grace Cooper who survives. Also surviving are one son, Charles Allen Corley and wife, Delsey, of Laurel Mountain Road; two special grandchildren, Nicholas and Rachael Corley, both of Laurel Mountain Road; one stepdaughter, Wilma Farris Leombruno and husband, Oreste, of Elkins; stepgranddaughters, Patty Long, Peggy Lockhart and Becky Cowgill; granddaughters, Pauline, Paula and Paulette; several great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; one niece, Margie Sandridge Nucilli; two nephews, Earl Ray Sandridge and Danny Corley; one sister-in-law, Mary Corley; one daughter-in-law, Norma; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was one son, Paul “Pete” Corley Jr.; one brother, Hoy Corley; one sister, Wilsie Sandridge; and one brother-in-law, June Sandridge.

He attended the schools of Weaver, was a coal miner for over 46 years, having worked for various coal mines including the former DeMotto Coal Co. and retired from the Badger Coal Co. He was a farmer and an avid car racing enthusiast.

Mr. Steve Silvan Corley, 66, a resident of 304 Valley River Road in Belington, departed this life at 6:48 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2007, in,Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins.

He was born March 20, 1940, at Weaver, a son of the late George E. and Lulu Phillips Corley.

On March 26, 1961, at Elkins, he was united in marriage to the former Anita Lynn Corbin, who survives at their residence.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Corley is survived by one son, Kenneth S. Corley of Belington; one daughter, Cindy D. Coontz and husband, Tim, of Belington; one brother, Montford Corley of Richmond, Va.; and one sister, Josephine McQuain of Falls Church, Va. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Jordon B. Corley, Mika J. Corley, Sydni D. Corley, Cori N. Coontz and Conner S. Coontz; two stepgranddaughters, Amy J. Coontz and Ashley B. Coontz; and one stepgreat-grandson, Gunnar Coontz.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, two brothers and one granddaughter.

Mr. Corley was a graduate of Belington High School with the class of 1958. He was lastly employed as a mechanic by L.E. Myers Electrical Co., was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and was a life time member of the National Rifle Association. He was a Protestant by faith.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington on Saturday, March 17, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Joey Ridenour officiating. Velma Grace Cooper Corley, 95, a resident of the Laurel Mountain Road, Elkins, departed this life Monday afternoon, Dec. 3, 2007, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Delsey Corley, where she had made her home for the past several months.

She was born Tuesday, Oct. 15, 1912, at Laurel Mountain, Randolph County, a daughter of the late John Grafton Cooper and Maude Thomas Cooper.

On Nov. 15, 1951, at Elkins, she was married to Paul Porter “Red” Corley, who preceded her in death June 26, 2007. Surviving are one son, Charles Alan Corley and wife, Delsey, of Laurel Mountain Road; one daughter, Wilma Farris Leombruno and husband, Oreste, of Elkins; one sister, Marie Cooper Moore of Beverly; five grandchildren, Nicholas Corley, Rachael Corley, Patricia Long, Peggy Lockhart and Rebecca Cowgill; five great-grandchildren, Sara Lockhart, Amy Lockhart, Katie Long, Andy Long and Libby Clark; one great-great-grandchild, Talia; several stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Warder and William Cooper; one sister, Rita Cooper; and one great- grandson Matthew Lockhart.

Velma attended the one-room Clay Lick School at Laurel Mountain and Elkins High School. She attended West Virginia Business College and worked the election polls for many years. She was a homemaker, a noted cook, avid reader and loved dirt car racing, game shows, auctions and her flowers.

Mrs. Dorwina O. Cosner, 81, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Colonial Place.

She was born July 12, 1925, at Bayard, a daughter of the late Wilbur “Happy” and Agnes McDonald Cosner.

On July 19, 1943, at Winchester, Va., she married Clyde W. Cosner who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Joan E. Cosner and Darlene E. Isner and husband, Paul, of Enterprise; one brother, Darrell W. Cosner of Farmdale, Ohio; three grandchildren, Richard R. King and wife, Carla, of Inverness, Fla., John E. King of Fairbanks, Alaska, who is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force and is stationed in Iraq; and Michael S. King of Decatin, Ill.; one foster sister, Mary Jacobson of Big Sandy, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Jessica A. King and Shannon M. King.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Forrest and Troy Cosner; three sisters, Delores Foreman, Blanche Day and Goldie Nelson; and one great-grandchild, James P. King.

Mrs. Cosner was a homemaker and a member of the United Brethren Church of Bayard.

Germain R. Coughlin

Germain Ronald Coughlin, 94, a resident of McDonough, Ga., died peacefully at the home of his daughter, Rita, on Monday, Feb. 5, 2007.

He was born at Buckhannon, a son of the late James Joseph Coughlin and Anna Margaret Dean Coughlin.

In 1938, he was married to the former Sibyl Lahoma Hayes, who preceded him in death on July 1, 1983.

Surviving him are one son, Michael Coughlin of Falls Church, Va.; three daughters, Judith Hufford of Lilburn, Ga., Rita Royer of McDonough, Ga., and Debra Kibler of Roseland, Va.; one brother, Thomas Coughlin of Weston; one sister, Mary Jo Giles of Elkins; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death besides his wife and parents were one son, Gregory Coughlin; one daughter, Patricia Kohlhaas; and three brothers, J. Edward, Bernard and Francis Coughlin.

Mr. Coughlin was a member of St. James Catholic Church at McDonough, Ga., and had been a member of the Knights of Columbus in West Virginia. He loved all sports, especially baseball, and was a big Atlanta Braves fan, but most important to him was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty R. Cox

Betty Ruth Cox, 80, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Cyrus Eli and Mary Margaret McCollam Wamsley.

In 1949, she was married to Ward W. Cox who survives in Elkins.

Also surviving are one daughter, Deborah C. Snyder and husband, Peter, of Cincinnati, Ohio; two grandchildren, Joshua A. Snyder and Mrs. Michael (Kari S.) Kester; a sister, Eleanor Schroder and husband, Paul, of Wetumka, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Everett, Harold, Carl and Kenneth Wamsley; and four sisters, Ada Cappodony, Mary Canfield, Alma Cooper and Virginia Mason.

Betty attended the schools of Randolph County and was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1945. She was employed by Gulf Oil in Elkins and later worked for Woodford Oil Co. prior to her retirement. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center and AARP.

A private service will be conducted followed by entombment in Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman. Virginia Elizabeth “Ginny Beth” Shreve Burns Craft, 75, a resident of Route 1, Beverly,  went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at 11:55 a.m. at her residence. She had been in failing health since August of 2006.

Born Sept. 26, 1932, at Dailey, she was the daughter of the late Thurman and Maggie McCauley Shreve.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were a sister, Josephine Etta Wilma Bennett; and a brother, Jackie Lee Shreve.

Ginny Beth was employed for several years as a nurse’s aide at Davis Memorial Hospital, retiring in the late 1980s. She was a EMT having volunteered at Randolph County Emergency Squad for several years where she worked along with her late husband, Ashby. She was a Pentecostal by faith. She was proud of her Cherokee heritage.

 First and foremost, Ginny Beth loved her family and more than anything, other than serving God, she looked for the good in everybody that came into her life and somehow Ginny Beth found that goodness, when no one else could. She read her Bible everyday and prayed for her family and friends. She loved the Game Show Network, especially the Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune. Ginny Beth loved to play bingo and she was also a rock collector, finding something precious in them that no one else could see. She was also a ham radio amateur. She was also an artist, drawing landscapes and portraits. In her younger years, she painted with oils. Ginny Beth touched many lives while she was on earth. Our loss will now be Heaven’s gain. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her but will remain in our hearts forever. God loaned us his special angel, Ginny Beth, for a while and now she is a beautiful angel in his garden. We are truly blessed to have had her in our lives.

Elkins Pharmacist, Steve Crawford, Dies

Pharmacist David Stephen Crawford, 61, a resident of Elkins, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2007, at his residence. He was in good health and death was unexpected.

Upon graduation from West Virginia University, Mr. Crawford began his career in 1968 at Family Drug Store in Elkins. He served as director of Pharmacy for Davis Memorial Hospital for 18 years.

Mr. Crawford formed Pharm-C Inc. in December 1988 to provide professional staff and management to longterm care facilities and assisted living facilities, and he practiced pharmacy at Health Center Pharmacy until his death.

He served in multiple state, national and international offices for the American Pharmaceutical Association.

At the age of 29, he was the youngest president of the West Virginia Pharmaceutical Association. In 1987, he became chairman of the Board of the American Pharmaceutical Association. He assisted young pharmacists by serving as a pharmacy preceptor for West Virginia University School of Pharmacy.

Mr. Crawford served as president and longtime member of the Elkins Rotary and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

He was a member of the Masonic Bodies of Parkersburg AF & AM, Nemesis Shrine Temple and Scottish Rite No. 1 of Wheeling.

Mr. Crawford served as president and campaign chairman of Randolph County United Way.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkins. His life was devoted to caring for people not only through the profession of pharmacy but he was a mentor for many young men and women in the health care field. He loved his family and especially loved playing with his grandson. He was an avid golfer and loved to fish.

He was born Oct. 23, 1945, at Parkersburg, a son of the late Bonnidene and Veon Crawford.

He was married in 1965 to Kandes McClain Crawford, who survives in Elkins.

Also surviving are one daughter, Stephanie Elin Haynes and husband, Voras, also of Elkins; his grandson and “buddy,” Nicholas Crawford Haynes; his mother-in-law, Leota B. McClain; brother, Larry V. Crawford and wife, Ann, of Lost Creek; a niece, Rachel Wilkinson and nephew, Larry Crawford II; and several cousins. He was the godfather of two special people, Katherine Cain and Stephen Walker.

Also preceding him in death were an uncle and aunt, Foster and Lillie Poling; his father-in-law, Irvin S. McClain; and a granddaughter, Lillie Katherine Haynes.

Betty Charleen Hayes Crickard, 58, a resident of Beverly, passed away Sept. 11, 2007, in Ruby Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 16, 1949, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Lawrence A. and Kathleen Isner Hayes.

On Jan. 11, 1980, she was married to Terry Lane Crickard, who survives at Beverly.

Also surviving are one brother, George Hayes and wife, Elizabeth, of Elkins; four sisters, Mrs. Fred (Mary Lou) Irwin of Elkins, Mrs. Jim (Martha Sue) Lloyd of Elberton, Ga., Mrs. Harold (Middy) Bower of Old Fort, N.C., and Mrs. Manouchehr (Becky) Naderpour of Waynesboro, Va. Several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Also preceding her in death besides her parents were one brother, Jimmy “Gabby” Hayes; and an aunt, Margaret Flanagan.

Betty was a graduate of Elkins High School, was employed as an office clerk for the Kroger store in Elkins and was co-owner of Fresh Bay Seafood. She was a member of Elkins Church of God and Family Worship Center.

Mary "Madeline" Whiteman Crickard, 91, a former resident of Beverly, and for the last three years a resident of Colonial Place, Elkins, departed this life Wednesday evening, July 18, 2007, at the nursing home.

She was born Sunday, Feb. 27, 1916, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Thornton Russell Whiteman and Martha Cecelia Gank Whiteman.

On May 31, 1934, she was married to Owen Augustus Crickard, who preceded her in death Feb. 25, 1976. Surviving are her niece that she raised, Marilyn Seitz; one brother, Willard T. Whiteman and wife, Consuella, of Elkins; one sister, Leona Purdum and husband, Raymond, of Kingwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are three brothers, Charles, Ernest and Robert Neil Whiteman; and six sisters, Vesta Clowser, Lois Dye, Wilma Seitz, Grace Eleanor Vannoy, Lila Whiteman and Marguerite G. Riffle.

Madeline was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1935 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where she had served on the church council and as treasurer for eight years; John Hart Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution where she had served as registrar; Randolph County Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, where she had served as treasurer; Yew Pine Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star at Richwood; Randolph County Historical Society, where she had served on the board of directors; Librerion Historical Society Museum and Library; Allegheny Regional Family History Society Library; a charter member of Randolph County Genealogical Society; had served seven years as secretary and treasurer of Central Committee of Girl Scouts at Richwood, and during this time, served five years as a leader of Brownies and Intermediate Scouts; organized the first Marine Corps Auxiliary in West Virginia at Richwood and Friends of the Elkins Library; was listed in Who’s Who in Genealogy and Heraldry; was listed in Personalities of America; had served as librarian at Beverly Family Research Library; was a professional genealogical researcher; was bestowed the honor of being chosen to do research for ABC’s 20/20 at West Virginia University’s Colson Hall Library on the life of Henry Gassaway Davis; and received the West Virginia History Hero Award in 2005. She wrote and indexed the book "1810: Virginia Census."

Ruth Lee Crites, 94, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, March 3, 2007, in United Hospital Center at Clarksburg.

She was born Feb. 16, 1913, at Imperial, a daughter of the late Emmett Lewis and Mamie Loudin Lewis.

On Dec. 10, 1926, she was married to Raymond Crites, who preceded her in death Feb. 25, 2000.

Surviving are two daughters, Ruth (Crites) Tenney and husband, Charles, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Patty (Crites) Mayo and husband, Robert, of Williamstown; two sons, Darell Crites and wife, Betty, of Inwood and Carrol Crites and wife, Imogene, of Buckhannon; five granddaughters, Brenda Mohile and husband, David, of Leesburg, Va., Myra Roberts and husband, Richard, of Inwood; Denise Keeley of Norfolk, Va., Kimberly Persico and husband, Michael, of Franklin Square, N.Y.; and Teresa Ferguson and husband, Hoy, of Elkins; one grandson, Christopher Mayo of Williamstown,; three great-grandsons, Patrick Mohile of Leesburg, Va., Michael Persico of Franklin Square, N.Y., and Andrew Persico of Franklin Square, N.Y.; two great-granddaughters, Crystal (Roberts) Zaccaris and husband, Larry, of Inwood and Kristy Mayo, of Williamstown; one great-great-grandson, Austin Zaccaris of Inwood; one great-great-granddaughter, Emily Ashton of Sterling, Va.; and one sister, Jean Blake of Falls Church, Va.

Also preceding her in death were one great-grandson, Cory Roberts; and two sisters, Aleta Burke and Elda Lewis.

She was a homemaker, attended Tennerton United Methodist Church at Buckhannon and was a member of Floral Rebekah Lodge 183 of Buckhannon.

Howard “David” Cross, 58, of Minerva, Ohio, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, in Aultman Hospital at Canton, following an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 26, 1948, at Belington, a son of the late Rev. Howard Willie and Hazel Lucy (Bennett) Cross.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, the former Carol J. Thomas, who survives at their home in Minerva; two sons, Allen David Cross and Michael William Cross; four grandchildren, Jordan Cross, Cody Cross, Cierra Cross and Haden Cross, all of Minerva; one brother, Brenice J. Cross, Elkins; five sisters, Lorraine Cross of Canton, Winona (Arthur) Feldman of Mansfield, Ohio, Lavanda (Cecil) Ware of Minerva, Frances Jones of Cortland, Ohio, and Sharon (Hobart) Vanover of Louisville, Ohio; and 46 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, William LaJune Cross, Mendel L. Cross, Verdon Cross and Harold Cross.

Mr. Cross was an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Army, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a retired truck mechanic for Republic Steel, following 19 years service.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave. in Belington at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7. The Rev. Ronald Phillips will officiate and interment will follow in Stringtown Cemetery where Barbour Post 44, American Legion will convey military rites.

Nelle B. Cross

Nelle Beatrice McDonald Cross, 91, a resident of Parsons and a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home of Thomas, departed this life early Sunday morning, May 6, 2007, in the nursing home.

She was born Saturday, March 4, 1916, at Clover Run, a daughter of the late J. Payton and Fannie Wilt McDonald. She was married to the late Everett B. Cross, who preceded her in death Oct. 27, 1972.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by one son, Robert J. Cross; three daughters, Sylvia Pennington, Lola Jean Wanless and one infant daughter; four brothers, Henry T. McDonald, James B. McDonald, Russell McDonald and William McDonald; one sister, Clara Harsh; and a special friend, John Foster.

She attended the one-room school of Clover Run. She worked for B.F. Long & Co. of Parsons for more than 30 years. She was a noted seamstress. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Parsons.

Brenice J. Cross

Brenice Jacob “Bernie” Cross, 79, a resident of 340 Graham St., Elkins, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2007, at 3:20 p.m. in Davis Memorial Hospital emergency room. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

Born Oct. 13, 1927, in Barbour County, he was the son of the late Howard and Hazel Bennett Cross.

On March 4, 1983, he was united in marriage to the former Margaret Sigler, who survives on Graham Street.

Friends will be received at Runner Funeral Home Chapel today from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Leonard R. Cunningham

Leonard Ray Cunningham, 81, born on Sept. 19, 1925, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 8, 2007, at 10 a.m. at his home on Georgetown Road in Beverly. He was surrounded by his family when he passed. He had been in declining health for several years, and he died of complications from leukemia.

Cunningham was the son of John Floyd Cunningham and Ida Belle Phillips Cunningham of Whitmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Louis Denver Cunningham and Roy Cunningham; and his sister, Louella Cunningham.

He is survived by his wife, Lodda “Louise” Mullennex Cunningham of Beverly, whom he married on Oct. 30, 1947.

He is also survived by his two sons, John D. Cunningham and wife, Patricia, of Beverly, and James M. Cunningham and wife, Delilah, of Summerville, S.C.

He is also survived by three granddaughters, Kimberly S. Cunningham Cain and husband, Jayson, of Beverly, Christina E. Cunningham of Snowshoe and Ashley A. Keller and husband, Phillip, of Summerville, S.C. He is also survived by two great-grandsons, Dominic Cunningham and Jackson Keller of Summerville, S.C.

Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, and two very special nephews, David Cunningham and wife, Mary, of Beverly and Kenneth White and wife, Wanda, of Harman.

Also surviving are nine brothers and sisters, Dale Cunningham and wife, Virginia, Louise Barkley, Sampson Cunningham and wife, Bernice, Mary Tingler and husband, Newt, Lincoln “Bud” Cunningham and wife, Betty, Arlene Tingler and husband, James, Nancy Bennett and husband, Paul, John Wilson Cunningham and wife, Carolyn, and Wade Cunningham and wife, Betty Jo.

He is also survived by Janet Shifflett, a very special friend and caregiver.

In 1945, Leonard served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also worked for Atlantic Seaboard at Mouth of Seneca. He then moved to Beverly in 1960, bought a beautiful farm on Georgetown Road and became a farmer.

He was the best husband, father and grandfather to his family and is deeply loved and missed by his wife, sons and granddaughters. He was known for always having an upbeat attitude and wonderful sense of humor and will always be loved and missed tremendously by his family and friends.

Lincoln Cunningham

Mr. Lincoln E. “Bud” Cunningham, 73, a resident of Kerens, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, at his home.

He was born Sept. 6, 1934, at Whitmer, a son of the late John and Ida Phillips Cunningham.

On Nov. 23, 1961, at Baltimore, Md., he married Betty Jean Shirk Cunningham, who survives at Kerens.

Also surviving are two sons, Richard E. Cunningham of Panama City, Fla., and Joe Cunningham of Elkins; a daughter, Shelby Welch Cunningham of Boonsboro, Md.; 10 grandchildren; four brothers, Samp Cunningham of Beverly, John Wilson Cunningham of Whitmer, Dale Cunningham of Beverly and Wade Cunningham of Elkins; four sisters, Arlene Tingler and Mary Newton Tingler, both of Elkins, Louise Barkley of Whitmer and Nancy Bennett of Sugar Grove also survive.

Also preceding him in death were a son, Allen Cunningham; three brothers, Leonard Cunningham, Louis Cunningham and Roy Cunningham; and a sister, Louella Cunningham.

Mr. Cunningham attended the schools of Randolph County and was employed as a general foreman for Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore, Md., prior to his retirement. He was the owner and operator of Bud’s Auto Sales at Crystal Springs. He enjoyed gardening. Hunting and fishing were his greatest passions. He will always be remembered for the wisdom he shared with all. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend to many and will always be missed by those who knew him. He was a member of Whitmer United Methodist Church.

Traci Dale Cunningham, 32, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, June 28, 2007, in Holbrook Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 27, 1974, at Buckhannon, the daughter of the late Rodgers Cunningham and Linda Cunningham, who survives at Buckhannon.

Also surviving are a daughter, Cheyenne Cunningham of Buckhannon; a son, Samuel Cody Tallman of Buckhannon; a brother, Terry Cunningham and wife, Cathy; a niece, Kaitlyn Cunningham; and two nephews, Matthew Cunningham and Nicholas Cunningham, all of Virginia.

She was Methodist by faith.

Anna Mae Currence, 78, a resident of Lorentz, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, in Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington under the care of Mountain Hospice of Belington.

She was born Feb. 24, 1928, at Adolph, a daughter of the late Sterling Tenney and Mary Alice Lanham Tenney

On Dec. 29, 1952, she was married to Stanley Clair Currence, who survives at Lorentz.

Also surviving are two sons, Rick Currence of Buckhannon and David Currence and wife, Brenda, of Volga; five daughters, Linda Hinzman and husband, Arnold, of Buckhannon, Lana Cutright and husband, Boyd, of Hacker Valley, Lois Tenney and husband, Ivan, of Buckhannon, Zella Cogar and husband, Tim, of Hacker Valley and Stella Wright and husband, Mark, of Buckhannon; three sisters, Ellen Samples of Buckhannon, Clara Scott of Huttonsville and Martha Cochran of Lorentz; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Dexel Currence; one grandson, Sam Cutright; two granddaughters, Sarah Wilfong and Sabrina Wilfong; one great-grandson, David Austin Currence; and one sister, Mary Tenney.

She was a custodian at West Virginia Wesleyan College. She was a loving mother and had a real zest for life. She was loved and will be greatly missed.

Bertha L. Currence

Bertha Lea Herron Currence, 99, a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2007, at the center.

She was born Feb. 27, 1908, at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Otha Herron and Ellen Markley Herron.

In April of 1935, at Mill Creek, she was married to Bosworth Currence, who preceded her in death Dec. 22, 1977.

Surviving are three sons, Charles A. Currence of Mill Creek, Billie Currence of Beverly and Richard M. Currence of French Creek; and one daughter, Geneva West of Isner Creek Road, Elkins. One sister, Stella Coger of Elkins; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Preceding her in death were four sons, Ollie Currence, Olson Currence, Freeman Currence and Franklin Currence; three daughters, Margaret Harold, Goldie Carver and Ruth Burr; two brothers and seven sisters.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who was loved and will be dearly missed by her large and extended family and friends. She was Protestant by faith.

Dale L. Currence

Dale Lincoln Currence, 89, a resident of Mill Creek and a patient in Elkins Regional Convalescent Hospital, passed away Friday evening, June 1, 2007, in the center.

He was born June 4, 1917, at Mill Creek, a son of the late Warren and Vernie B. Currence.

He was married to Eva G. Mills Currence, who remains a patient in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

Also surviving are three daughters, Cecilia Mavis Conrad and husband, Kenneth, of Bassett, Va., Beatrice Barrickman and husband, Utah, and Patricia Chewning and husband, Ray, all of Mill Creek. Ten Grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding him in death was a granddaughter.

Mr. Currence attended the schools of Randolph County, was employed at various jobs including Coastal Lumber Co. and as a coal miner at Hickory Lick Mine. He was a self-educated electrician, welder and heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church.

Donald L. Currence

Donald Lynn Currence, 57, a native of Randolph County, a former resident of Miami, Fla., and since 1997 a resident of Elkins, departed this life Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at his home. Death was unexpected.

He was born Thursday, April 27, 1950, at Elkins, a son of the late Janet Doreen Currence Fretwell, and was raised by his grandmother, Mary Swecker Currence Conrad and the late John D. Currence and step grandfather, Elmer Conrad.      Surviving is one son, Jared Currence of Elkins; six brothers, Robin Maxson, Michael Maxson and wife, Gwen, John Maxson, Stephen Maxson and wife, Kim, Danny Maxson and Rocky Maxson and wife, Vickie, all of Elkins; two sisters, Mary White and husband, Keith, of Beverly and Becky Acord and husband, Glenn, of Manassas, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1968, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany and Vietnam until becoming disabled in Vietnam.  He had worked as a truck driver for D & W Truck Lines, loved camping and motorcycles and was a Harley-Davidson enthusiast.

Marion R. Currence, 77, of Cleveland, Ohio,  died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at his home.

He was born Jan. 18, 1930, at Hemlock, a son of the late Wilson Currence and Minnie Wagner Currence.

On June 25, 1955, he was married to Arbia Della Hoover Currence, who survives at Cleveland, Ohio.

Also surviving are one son, Michael Currence; two daughters, Susan Riedthaler and husband, David, and Janet Roff; three grandsons, Douglas Riedthaler, Josh Currence and Alexander Roff; five granddaughters, Roberta Chesbro, Nicole Stiegelmeyer, Katherine Riedthaler, Mary Riedthaler and Margaret Roff; two great-grandsons, Devin Humphreys and Tristin Chesbro, all of Cleveland, Ohio; four brothers, Stanley Currence of Buckhannon, Stanford Currence of Webster Springs, Daultin Currence of Cassity and Douglas Currence of Buckhannon; and one sister, Kay Hinkle of Harman.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Donald Currence.

He was employed at Ford Motor Co. and was a member of the National Rifle Association. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Marie L. Currence

Marie Lloyd currence, 89, a lifelong resident of Mill Creek, passed away, Monday, April 30, 2007, at her residence on Conrad Street in Mill Creek. She had been in failing health for the past several years.

Born Sept. 28, 1917, at Mill Creek, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Carl and Blanche Louise Snelson Lloyd.

On Oct. 30, 1951, she was united in marriage to Coleman Currence, who survives at Mill Creek.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Patricia “Peeper” Shiflett and husband, Roger, of Mill Creek and Patty “Sissy” Johnson and husband, Dalton, of Elkins; three sons, Denver Lloyd and wife, Hazel, and Larry Currence and wife, Judy, all of Mill Creek and James Currence and wife, Anita, of Huttonsville; three sisters, Mae McCauley of Ohio, Myrtle McCauley of Mill Creek and Irene Hicks and husband, Tom, of Florida; and one brother, Elmer Lloyd of Mill Creek. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Preceding her in death besides her parents were two daughters, Hilda Lena Gear and Peggy Jean Currence; and two sons, Ralph John “Pete” Lloyd and Dale Eugene Currence.

Marie was a homemaker and a Protestant by faith. She loved sewing and raising her family. Marie will be greatly missed and will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who loved her.

Nola Jean Carr Currence, 76, a former resident of Kerens and more recently a resident of Stanwood Avenue, Baltimore, Md., died July 7, 2007, at her home in Baltimore, Md.

Nola Jean leaves behind her loving husband, Numer Ray Currence; daughter, Cheryl Ann Jones and husband, Herman Jones; and sons, Wesley Ray Currence and David Noel Currence and wife, Tracey Currence. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Hart; sister, Mae Shipp; sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Brad Dean; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sarah and Curtis Evans. Nola Jean is also survived by eight grandchildren, their spouses and three great-grandchildren, John and Wyeth Jones and daughter, Rachel, Kimberly and Scott Mahle and daughter, Sophia, and son, Hayden, Barbara and Robert Frederick, Nathan Jones, Shelby Currence, Christian Currence, Alec Currence and Reann Currence. Numer "Ray" Currence, 78, a former resident of Elkins, and more recently a resident of Stanwood Avenue, Baltimore, Md., departed this life early Monday morning, July 23, 2007, in Good Samaritan Nursing Center at Baltimore, Md.

Ray was born Monday, Sept. 17, 1928, at Elkins, a son of the late Number W. Currence and Ruby Dunkle Currence. Ray was married to the former Nola Jean Hart, who preceded him in death on July 7, 2007. They had celebrated 56 years of marriage.

Ray leaves behind a daughter, Cheryl Ann Jones and husband, Herman; two sons, Wesley Ray Currence and David Noel Currence and wife, Tracy; two sisters, Sarah Evans and husband, Curtis, and their children, and Mary Rhodes and her son; eight grandchildren and their spouses; and three great-grandchildren, John Jones and wife, Wyeth, and daughter, Rachel, Kimberly Mahle and husband, Scott, their daughter Sophia and son Hayden, Barbara Jones Frederick and husband, Robert, Nathan Jones, Shelby Currence, Christian Currence, Alec Currence and Reann Currence.

William Henry “Bill” Currence, 73, of Durbin, passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at his home in Durbin.

Cleona I. Cutright

Cleona Irene Carr Cutright, 90, a resident of Ellamore, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2007, in Talbott Personal Care Home in Belington.

She was born Oct. 9, 1916, at Wymer, a daughter of the late Flernoy A. and Cora Bell Douglas Carr.

On July 30, 1942, she was married to Marvell J. “Cuttie” Cutright in Oakland, Md., who preceded her in death on April 25, 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Jearl Wayne Cutright and wife, Jane, of Norton and Roger Earl Cutright and wife, Brenda, of Doylestown, Ohio. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Adam Cutright of Boston, Mass., Anita Cutright of Elkins and Jonathon and Krista Janine Cutright of Doylestown, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Four brothers, Dixon, Hayes, Odis and Paul Carr; and three sisters, Clara Smith, Mabel Mace and Nola Ferree, preceded her in death. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was a Methodist by faith and a member of Gertrude Chapel United Methodist Church of Ellamore.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 25, from the funeral home chapel. Orva B. Cutright

Orva B. "Tommie" Cutright, 88, of Rock Cave, the Canaan community, died Saturday, July 14, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.

She was born July 26, 1918, in Webster County, a daughter of the late John R. and Delena Hammons Cogar.

She was united in marriage on July 28, 1934, to Hartzel Cutright, who preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1986.

She is survived by four sons, John and wife, Edna Cutright, of Richwood, Rick and wife, Bonnie Cutright, of Canaan, Jack Cutright of Canaan and Jeff Cutright and fiancee, Sue, of Rock Cave; one daughter, Irene Cox and husband, Bill, of Craigsville; one daughter-in-law, Gayle Marie Cutright of Cowen; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son, Gail Cutright; and four sisters, Ovie, Ora, Opal and Olive.

Tommie was a lifetime homemaker. In her younger days, she helped her husband operate two logging camps. Also, she worked as a cook at Garden Fresh Restaurant. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Thelma Joy Cutright, 96, of French Creek, died Sunday, June 3, 2007.

She was born April 25, 1911, at Alexander, a daughter of the late Arodious “Toad” and Laura Jones Zickefoose.

She was united in marriage on June 25, 1930, to Curt Cutright, who preceded her in death in September 1982.

She is survived by one daughter, Madeline Thomas of Holbrooks Nursing Home; one sister, Mary Anderson of McMinnville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Charles E Thomas and Antoinette Botti of Somerset, Pa., Danny L. Thomas and wife, Emily, of French Creek, Floyd Cutright of Rock Cave, Lloyd Cutright of Alexander, Nancy Hyre and husband, Craig, Victoria Dunlavy and husband, Eddie, and Johnnie Cutright, all of Buckhannon, Maggie Harper and husband, Chris, of Denton, Ky., Scott Cutright and wife, Jan, and Rebecca Detamore and husband, Donald, all of French Creek; 21 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Lillie Mae Cutright; three sons, Johnnie Dale Cutright, James Edwin Cutright and Charles Coy Cutright; one brother, Doras Zickefoose; and two sisters; infant sister, Ruth Zickefoose and Eleanor Lake; one infant granddaughter, Anna Louise Thomas; and infant great-grandson, Jalen Tenney.

Friends will be received from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at the Indian Camp United Methodist Church with Pastor Ed Lowther and the Rev. Sue Lowther officiating.
