Frederick F. Valentine
The Rev. Canon Frederick Farwell Valentine, 86, a resident of the Crystal Springs community, Elkins, departed this life Thursday evening, March 16, 2006, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown following a brief illness.

Frederick F. Valentine
The Rev. Canon Frederick Farwell Valentine, 86, a resident of the Crystal Springs community, Elkins, departed this life Thursday evening, March 16, 2006, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a brief illness.
He was born Saturday, Dec. 13, 1919, at Philadelphia, Pa., a son of the late Frederick Farwell Valentine Sr. and Elizabeth Devit Valentine.
He was twice married. First, on June 28, 1945, at Alexandria, Va., he was married to the former Virginia Louise Thompson, who preceded him in death March 30, 1980. Second, on Sept. 17, 1983, he was married to the former Patricia Smith, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Timothy Frederick Valentine of St. Albans; one daughter, Bridget Mauzy and husband, Charles, of Elkins; one stepson, Stephen Forsythe of Charleston; one stepdaughter, Susan Halterman of Warrenton, Va.; one sister, Margaret Bolgunas of Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren, Aaron, Simon, Samuel and Isaac Mauzy; and three stepgrandchildren, David, Stephen and John Halterman.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and first wife were one son, Nathaniel John Valentine.
He graduated from high school at Philadelphia, Pa., attended Wharton Business School at Philadelphia, Pa., and was a graduate of the Virginia Theological Seminary at Alexandria, Va. He briefly worked in the banking business before becoming the rector of the Grace Episcopal Church in Elkins from 1950 to 1958. From 1958 to 1974, he served Episcopal churches in North and South Carolina. In 1974, he returned to Elkins, where he worked as director of the Adult Training Center for the Mentally Challenged with the Appalachian Mental Health Center. He was currently the rector of the Grace Episcopal Church in Elkins and the Saint Matthias Episcopal Church in Grafton. In August 2004, he was made the Canon of the West Virginia Diocese of Episcopal Churches and in 2005 attended the 60-year reunion of the Virginia Theological Seminary at Alexandria, Va., in which three members of his class attended.
He was an accomplished banjo player and was a member of the Appal Core Band. He was an exceptional artwork painter and loved animals, gardening, flowers, family and church.
The family will receive friends at the Grace Episcopal Church from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday. Final rites will be conducted at the church Monday, March 20, at 11 a.m. The Right Rev. W. Michie Klusmeyer will officiate and interment will follow at the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. Julia M. Vance
Julia Mae Vance, 97, of Cabins, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, in Grant County Nursing Home at Petersburg. 
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Schaeffer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Joseph Eversole officiating. Regina C. Vance
Regina Catherine Vance, 90, a former resident of Harman and Elkins, and for the last several years, a resident of MonPointe Continuing Care Center at Morgantown, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at the Care Center.
She was born Saturday, Nov. 6, 1915, in Pendleton County, a daughter of the late Emma Barkley and stepfather, John Barkley.
On May 12, 1940, she was married to Roy William Vance, who preceded her in death Oct. 24, 1965.
Mrs. Vance is survived by her two children, Dr. Karen Harper-Dorton and husband, Joseph Dorton, of Morgantown and Dan Vance and wife, Sally Vance, of Worthington, Ohio.
In addition to her children, she has four grandchildren, Stacia Harper of Dublin, Ohio, Christopher Harper of Morgantown, Andrew Vance and wife, Susan, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Amy Vance of Columbus, Ohio.
A graduate of Harman High School with the class of 1938, Mrs. Vance received her nursing degree from the Davis Memorial School of Nursing in Elkins where she later worked and served as a member of the teaching faculty for more than two decades. Retiring from her nursing career at the age of 70, Mrs. Vance was an active member of the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. An admirer of birds and poetry, she is a published poet. She was a Methodist by faith.

Teddy H. Vance
Teddy Harold “ Teddy Pop” Vance, 70, a resident of Dryfork, passed away at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 25, 1936, at Whitmer, a son of the late Arnold and Flossie Dolly Vance.
Surviving are three sons, Teddy Harold Vance Jr., James Randall Vance and Ricky David Vance, all of Dry Fork; and two sisters, Mary Wymer of Whitmer and Gloria Jean Vance of Worthington. Six grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Jim, Bill and Dick Vance; four sisters, Josie Vance, Helen Waybright, Audrey Vance and Ruth Vance; and one grandson, Josh Starnes.
Mr. Vance retired from Canaan Valley Resort where he worked for 30 years. He was a recipient of the Anita Barton Award in 1990 for his dedication to the spirit of skiing. Following his retirement, he was employed by the Timberline Homeowners Association and was a member of the Harman Senior Center.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Whitmer Church of God. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m.. Friday, April 14, from the Whitmer Church of God with the Rev. Kenneth Vandevender
Kenneth Vandevender, 89, a resident of Dailey, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2006, at his home.
He was born April 23, 1916, at Mingo, a son of the late Adam and Mable Barb Vandevender.
On June 7, 1950, at Monterey, Va., he was married to Fonda Lou Hurst Vandevender, who survives at Dailey.
Also surviving is a son, Kenneth Eugene Vandevender of Valley Bend; a daughter, Sandra Kay Vandevender of Dailey; and a brother, Monroe Vandevender of Canton, Ohio.
Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Junior, Woodrow and Hoy Vandevender.
Mr. Vandevender was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was employed as a school teacher and later employed as postmaster at the Dailey Post Office, from where he retired. He was a Methodist by faith.

Paul J. Vandevender
Paul Junior Vandevender, 82, a resident of the Pheasant Run Community, Kerens, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 22, 2006, at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

Paul Vandevander
Paul Junior Vandevander, 82, a resident of the Pheasant Run community, Kerens, went home with the Lord, Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 22, 2006, at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
He was born Thursday, Feb. 21, 1924, at Osceola, a son of the late Edward Isaac and Willa Chloe Armentrout Vandevander.
On Sept. 29, 1945, at Harman, he was married to the former Edith Rosetta Thompson, who survives at Kerens.
Also surviving are two sons and four daughters, Nancy Marie Kalar and husband, Joe, Kenneth Edward Vandevander and wife, Wanda, all of Kerens, Pauletta Ramsey and husband, Brad, of Parsons, Benny Jay Vandevander and wife, Maureen, Norma Gay Channell and husband, Gary, and Rebecca Sue Arbogast and husband, Cletus Ray, all of Kerens; one brother, Delbert Vandevander; two sisters, Ethel White and Catheryn Ruddle; 13 grandchildren, Jody and Billy Kalar, Kevin, Tim and Jason Vandevander, Heather, Dan and Erin Ramsey, Debbie Lawrence and Mike Vandevander, Bryan Channell and Amy Barrett and Adam Arbogast; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Stanford; two sisters, Wanda and Pauline; and one great-grandson, Noah Michael Vandevander.
Paul was a veteran of the U.S. Marie Corps serving during World War II. He was disabled having been a collision repairman and a member of the Operators and Engineers Union. He was a farmer and in 1979 he became one of the first paramedics in Tucker County. He was Past Master of Pythagoras Lodge 128 AF & AM of Parsons, The Scottish Rite and the Osiris Temple of Wheeling. He was an active member of the Irons Chapel Church.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons today from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Friday, Aug., 2006 at 11 a.m. The Rev. J. Sun S. VanGilder
Sun Sung VanGilder, 56, a resident of Fayetteville, N.C., died Saturday, April 1, 2006, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 6, 1950, at Seoul, South Korea, a daughter of the late Hong Du and Pun Euk Park Sung.
Surviving are her husband, Bernard E. VanGilder of Fayetteville, N.C.; two brothers; and several nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the Korean Presbyterian Church and an ordained deacon of the church.

Everett Elwood VanMeter, 69, of Burlington, and formerly of Maysville, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, in Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

Lossie Orlando “Shorty” VanMeter, 88, of Upper Tract, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at the home of his son, Gary VanMeter, in Woodsfield, Ohio.

Margaurite VanNoy
Margaurite J. Dugan VanNoy, 86, passed away on Nov. 22, 2006, at Peoria, Ariz. Death was attributed to cardiac arrest.
She was born July 21, 1920, in Cumberland, Md., the only child of the late Leo M. Dugan of Bloomington, Ill., and the late Theresa Roy Dugan of Hendricks. She was the last surviving member of the Dugan Clan.
Mrs. VanNoy was educated in local schools, graduating from Parsons High school with the class of 1938. She attended business colleges in Huntington and Fairmont.
In 1939, she was united in marriage to the late A. Kenneth VanNoy in Winchester, Va. He preceded her in death in 1984.
In 1951, Mrs. VanNoy and her late husband settled in Phoenix, Ariz. Mrs. VanNoy was employed in the insurance field until 1970, at which time she left the business world and entered nursing school. She graduated in 1972 as an LPN and retired from nursing in 1989.
Mrs. VanNoy was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Phoenix for more than 43 years. Upon her death, she was a member of St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Peoria, Ariz.
She is survived by Michael Burcham of Huntington, Phyllis Choroba of Mich., Margaret Mattson of Scottsdale, Ariz., H.E. Roy of Pittsburgh, Peter Roy of Front Royal, Va., Rebekah Roy Nelson of Hendricks and Faith Roy Moore of Parsons.
Chapel of the Chimes will be handling the funeral arrangements. Interment will be on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at the National Veterans Cemetery, where she will be buried with her husband.  From 25 Nov 2006.

Dorothy E. Vanpelt
Dorothy Elizabeth Vanpelt, 75, a resident of Thorne Avenue, Elkins, passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Sept. 29, 1930, at Huttonsville, a daughter of the late Bruce and Nanny Pudder Riffle.
She was married for 53 years to James H. Vanpelt, who survives in Elkins. Also surviving are three sons, Robert Elliott Simmons of Elkins, James Bruce Vanpelt and wife, Debra, of Elkins and David Roy Vanpelt and wife, Pamela, of Beverly; two daughters, Rosemary Summerfield and husband, David, and Martha Ann Kirkpatrick and husband, Pete, all of Elkins; one brother, Martin E. Riffle of Mill Creek; one sister, Francis Hedrick of Elkins; four grandchildren, Jerry Joe Ryder, Jessica Dawn Kirkpatrick, Angela Dawn Vanpelt and Julia Faith Vanpelt; and one great- grandson, Ashton Clemens.
Mrs. Vanpelt was employed as a housekeeper for many years. He also loved caring for children.
Private funeral services were conducted at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins and interment followed in Little Arlington Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Goldie H. Vanreenen
Goldie Hevener Vanreenen, 85, a resident of the Ferguson Road, the Crystal Springs Community, Elkins, for the past 26 years, departed this life Friday, July 7, 2006, at her home, while mowing the lawn, her favorite pastime. She had been in declining health although death was unexpected.
She was born Thursday, March 3, 1921, at Green Bank, a daughter of the late Clyde Hevener and Ether Trainer Hevener.
Surviving are one sister, Evelyn Beverage of Green Bank; three nieces, Patsy Sacks, who looked after her, of Elkins, Ruth A. Feather of Richmond, Va., and Charole Stout of Lewisburg; three nephews, Corkie Burner of Durbin; Ricky Burner of Arbovale and Bobby Burner of Lewisburg; one granddaughter, Kimberly Stout and husband, Noel; three great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Irene VanReenen in California; one brother-in-law, Forrest Burner of Durbin; and her friend, Ron Dressler and wife, Donna, who checked on her every week, of Elkins.
Preceding her in death is one son, Jimmie VanReenen.
Goldie loved gospel music that her friend, Eloise Mann sang for her. She loved her Lord and attended church when she was able. She was so kind with a big heart. She would give you her last dime and do without herself. Her family and friends will miss her.

Frank, of Broadway, Ida Cline of Harrisonburg, Va., Ruth Hedrick of Royal Retreat, Va., Alberta Higgins and husband, Daniel, of Elkins, Rebecca Farley and husband, Mike, of Conover, N.C. and Donna Varner of Royal Retreat, Va.; four brothers, Harrison Varner, Robert Varner and wife, Sheila, and John Warner and wife, Barbara, all of Durbin and Lyndon B. Regena Jewel Varner, 51, of Dryfork, passed away Aug. 14, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
She was born April 17, 1955, at Harman, a daughter of the late Thomas Edgar Miller Sr. and Josie Alline Thompson Miller.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Varner; three brothers, Dwight Marshall Miller Sr. of Rising Sun, Md., Craig Allen Miller of Harman and Thomas Edgar Miller Jr. of Elkins; one sister, Pamela Kay Miller Taylor of Davis; five nieces; four nephews; 12 great-nieces; and 10 great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Sharon Jean Miller.
Mrs. Varner was a kind and caring lady. She loved animals, especially cats. She was a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received at Dryfork Assembly of God Church today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at Dryfork Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Ric Lewellen and the Rev. Joe Mininger officiating. Interment will follow in the Roy Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.  From 16 Aug 2006.

Anna (Martin) Veach, 104, of Petersburg, passed away July 25, 2006, in Grant County Nursing Home at Petersburg.
Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Schaeffer Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Petersburg. Fr. Richard B. Glenn Veach, 96, of Arthur, died Tuesday, May 2, 2006, in Grant Memorial Hospital at Petersburg.

Anna M. Vogel
Mrs. Anna Mary Vogel, 90, a resident of Rockwood, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at her home.
She was born April 1, 1915, at Rockwood, Tenn. Mrs. Vogel was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Maude Lee Wicks; husband, John Mathias Vogel; and sons, Ray V. Griffith and Hershel Griffith.
Survivors include six daughters, June Bolyard and husband, Darrell, of Whitmer, Wanda Crabtree and husband, Charles, of Rockwood, Tenn., Lee Yukish and husband, John, of Kitty Hawk, N.C., Jackie Vitek of Fallston, Md., Carol Rodwick and husband, Buddy, of Lincoln, Calif., and Mary Schillings and husband, Bill, of Lenoir City, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl Wicks and wife, Bonnie, of Rockwood, Tenn.; and two sisters-in-law, Louvena Wicks and Lena Wicks, both of Rockwood, Tenn.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, Tenn. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, from the mortuary chapel with Pastor Paul Nolan officiating. Graveside services and interment will be Monday, Jan. 30, in Delaney Valley Memorial Garden at Timonium, Md. Harold Vossler
Harold “Flipper” Vossler, 62, of Boulder, Colo., and formerly of Petersburg, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Mesa Vista Nursing Center in Boulder, Colo.
Born April 28, 1943, in Kansas City, Kan., he was the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth Anderson Vossler. He grew up in Wheeling and graduated from Devereaux High School in Pennsylvania. After graduation, Harold moved to Petersburg, spending happy years there working as a chimney sweep and cutting firewood. While in Petersburg he was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.
After suffering a stroke in April 2000, Harold moved to Columbus, Ohio, to be near his family. Together with his brother, Dick, and sister-in-law Kathy, Harold moved to Boulder, Colo., in October 2002.
Although he missed his friends in Petersburg, Harold enjoyed the beauty of the mountains and especially loved touring and watching wildlife in national parks. 
Harold is survived by his brother, Dick, sister-in-law Kathy, nephew, Rich, and wife, Angie; niece, Heather, husband, Mike; and great-nephew, Benjamin, all of Colorado, as well as his brother David, sister-in-law Carol; niece, Kelli, and nephews, Jeffrey and Thomas, all of upstate New York. Harold also left behind dear friends in Petersburg, including Dottie and Gordon Riggleman and family, Icky and Mary Cay Hyre and family, and the Larry Berg family and many others. To the end of his life, Flipper enjoyed looking at photographs of his years in Petersburg and corresponded with many of his friends.
It was Harold’s wish to be cremated and have his ashes scattered atop the Rocky Mountains. A small private memorial service with his family will be held at a later date. In loving memory of Harold, please say a special prayer for him, smile at your neighbors and enjoy walking in the sunshine of the town of Petersburg that Harold loved so much.

Myrtle Vuchetich-Flint
Myrtle Allegra Vuchetich-Flint, 99, a resident of Galloway, passed away Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, in Broaddus Hospital
She was born April 14, 1907, at Barron, Wis., a daughter of the late John and Annetta (Surguy) Thimblin.
She was united in marriage in November 1924 to John I. Vuchetich, who preceded her in death Oct. 13, 1975.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Lou Skidmore, who was married to the late Paul Edward Skidmore, of Philippi; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Flint was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters, also three daughters, V. Beryl (Vuchetich) Jones of Painsville, Ohio, Shirley (Vuchetich) Tutalo of Fairmont and Phyllis A. (Vuchetich) Lacare of Baltimore, Md.
Mrs. Flint was a seamstress, homemaker and an avid gardener. Mrs. Flint was a member of Flemington Women’s Club, Clarksburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 573 and she initiated the first chapter of Galloway Senior Center. Mrs. Flint was a founding member of Galloway United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home at 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Dec. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the service hour. Interment will follow in Flemington IOOF Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home services.   From 4 Dec 2006.
