Vivian W. Vachon
Vivian Williams Vachon, 87, a resident of Hambleton, departed this life Thursday morning, March 24, 2005, at her home.

Vivian J. Vachon
Vivian Jaunita Williams Vachon, 87, a resident of Hambleton, departed this life Thursday morning, March 24, 2005, at her home. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to Alzheimer’s.
She was born June 4, 1917, at Benbush, a daughter of the late John and Anna Auvil Williams.
On June 9, 1940, at Thomas, she was married to Wilferd B. Vachon Sr., who survives. They had celebrated 64 years of marriage.
Surviving are one son, Dr. Wilferd B. Vachon and wife, Ularich Frisch Vachon, of Orrs Island, Maine; one daughter, Dr. Linda A. Marshall and husband, Dr. Clifford Marshall, of Los Angeles, Calif.; one grandson, Andrew Marshall; two sisters, Mary A. Helm of Colonial Place, Elkins and Elpha Tewell of Nella’s Nursing Home, Elkins; and one brother-in-law, James Tewell of Colonial Place.
She is preceded in death by four brothers, Dayton, Raymond, Theadore and Ronald Williams; and four sisters, Jessie Watson, Effie Kight, Freda Bible and Lula Goff.
She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1935. She was a candy striper. She was a homemaker, loving wife and mother and she loved to dance and sing.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, Mrs. Vachon will be moved to the Hambleton United Methodist Church at Hambleton where funeral services will be conducted at 11 p.m. The Rev. John Morrison will officiate and interment will follow at Saint George Cemetery at Saint George. Dorothy E. Valentine
Dorothy Ellen Mullenax Valentine, 82, a resident of Chambersburg Road, Columbus, Ohio, departed this life early Thursday morning, Dec. 29, 2005, in the Monterey Care Center at Grove City, Ohio. She had been in declining health.
She was born Tuesday, Nov. 13, 1923, at Sugarlands Community, Tucker County, a daughter of the late Amos Gilbert Mullenax and Ethel Zady Hedrick Mullenax.
On July 27, 1972, at Reno, Nev., she was married to Bobby Keith Valentine, who survives at Columbus, Ohio.
Also surviving are two sons, Gilbert Bohon of Old Fort, Tenn., and Steve Bohon of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters, Barbara Jordan and husband, William, of Kentucky and Sherry Penrod and husband, Roger, of Bradenton, Fla.; one brother, Grover Mullenax and wife, Betty, of Philippi; one sister, Verda L. Weese and husband, Earl E., of Montrose; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Preceding her in death besides her parents are one infant son, Timothy; and one brother, Noah Lee Mullenax.
She attended the school at Sugarlands and had worked as a nurse’s assistant at Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins, at Reno, Nev., and at Santa Rosa having retired in 1978, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Parsons Baptist Church at Columbus, Ohio, where she was baptized with a granddaughter, Peggy. She enjoyed needlepoint, sewing, was a great cook, loved to fix large meals for her family in her home and going to the park on picnics.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel Monday, Jan. 2, at 10 a.m. Pastor Ralph Andrus will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens. William “Billy” Joseph Vance, 48, of Franklin, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.

Betty A. Vandevender
Betty Alice Sponaugle Vandevender, 98, a former resident of Job, passed away Thursday afternoon, April 28, 2005, in the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.
She was born Sept. 3, 1906, at Hunting Ground near Cherry Grove, a daughter of the late Harness and Levie Moyers Sponaugle.
On May 21, 1928, she was married to Ira S. Vandevender, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are four sons, Emory Vandevender and wife, Wilma, of Whitmer, Harel Vandevender and wife, Juanita, of Kerens, and Ronald Vandevender and Ira Vandevender Jr., both of Job; three daughters, Betty Jane Mallow and husband, Jearl, of Job, Bertha Thompson of Elkins and Ocie Thompson and husband Bruce of Bowden; one brother, Omar Sponaugle of Harrisonburg, Va.; one sister, Annie Kisamore of Cherry Grove; 32 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Verna Sponaugle; a son, Donald Vandevender; four brothers and four sisters.
Mrs. Vandevender was a homemaker and attended the United Pentecostal Church at Job.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Malone officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman. Gerthal Vandevander
Gerthal Lee Vandevander, 91, of Elkins and since 1998 a resident of Nella’s Nursing Home in Elkins, died March 5, 2005, at Nella’s Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 30, 1913, on Elk Mountain at Cherry Grove, a daughter of the late Glendi Lambert and Nellie Mae Thompson Lambert.
She was married to Willie Vandevander, who preceded her in death May 21, 1999.
She is survived by five daughters, Lena Mae Hiett of Falling Waters, Bonnie Lou Mick of Cherry Grove, and Minnie Pearl Bennett, Cindy Sue Jarvis and Myrtle Lee Vandevander, all of Elkins; four sons, Willis Vandevander of Brandywine, Golden Vandevander of Norton, Allen Vandevander of Whitmer and Curtis Vandevander of Republic, Ohio; 43 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and more than 40 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were two sons, Jeffie Vandevander and Charlie Vandevander; three brothers, Ashford Lambert, Oakland Lambert and Richford Lambert; and one sister, Arzolla Wimer.
She was a homemaker and attended Big Run Presbyterian Chapel at Cherry Grove.
Family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Big Run Presbyterian Chapel at Cherry Grove. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the church with the Rev. Junior Grant Vandevender, 71, of Albion, Mich., and formerly of Bartow, passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Tendercare in Battle Creek, Mich.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, Mich. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. at the funeral home and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.  From 7 Sep 2005. 

Noah M. Vandevander
Noah Michael Vandevander, infant son of Kelly and Michael Vandevander of Elkins, passed away Wednesday evening, Oct 12, 2005, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Surviving in addition to his parents are maternal grandparents, Dale and Debbie Wilfong of Elkins; maternal great-grandfather, Gene Cook of Elkins; paternal grandparents, Benny and Maureen Vandevander of Kerens and David and Dixie Carr of Montrose; paternal great-grandparents, Paul and Edith Vandevander of Kerens; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his maternal great-grandmother, Loraine Cook; and paternal great-grandfather, Richard Lloyd.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Mt. State Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Michael Lantz will officiate and interment will follow. Oda Mae Vandevender, 92, a former resident of Terra Alta, and more recently, a resident of Manassas, Va., departed this life Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at Annaburg Manor at Manassas. She had been in declining health.

Oda M. Vandevender
Oda Mae Kyle Vandevender, 92, a former resident of Terra Alta and more recently a resident of Manassas, Va., departed this life Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at Annaburg Manor at Manassas. She had been in declining health.
She was born Monday, Aug. 5, 1912, at Valley Head, a daughter of the late Jonas Kyle and Lucy See Painter Kyle.
On Sept. 25, 1927, she was married to Oral Howard “George” Vandevender, who preceded her in death June 21, 1971.
She is survived by one son, Chris Kyle and wife, Donna Marie, of Manassas, Va.; one stepson, Jewel Vandevender and wife, Margaret Fay, of Riverdale, Md.; three daughters, Joanna Wamsley of Chelmsford, Mass., Leighoda Moore of Haymarket, Va., and Cynthia Sue Feather and husband, Richard, of Terra Alta; 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her husband and parents are one son, Steve Howard Vandevender; one brother, George Kyle; one sister, Floda Swecker; one grandson, Brian Howard Pritt; and two sons-in-law, Harvey Moore and Bruce Wamsley.
She had attended the schools of Randolph County. She had been employed for several years at Hopemont State Hospital as a medical health aide until her retirement in 1972. She was a homemaker, loved to crochet, make crafts and garden. She loved music, played many instruments, enjoyed children and animals, and had a great love for nature. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Terra Alta.

Mr. Stelman J. Vandevander, 63, of Circleville, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at his home.

Iona V. VanGilder
Iona Vivian VanGilder, 87, of 829 Southern Ave., Stonewood, departed this life at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, at United Hospital Center.
She was born at Huttonsville Oct. 14, 1918, a daughter of the late Joseph Swecker and Caroline Gear Swecker.
Her husband, Dexter C. VanGilder Sr., preceded her in death Oct. 18, 1989.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dexter C. Jr. and Sharron VanGilder of Stonewood; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Eugene R. Conaway of Clarksburg, Joann and Jerry Leedy of Austin, Texas, and Kimberly and Thomas Scott of Quiet Dell; nine grandchildren, Michael, Bryan, Gregg, Scott, Allan, Brady, Dean, Beth and Jennifer; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Mrs. VanGilder was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. VanGilder was a member of the Congregational Missionary Church in Stonewood for 53 years. She was a member of the Community Education Outreach of Stonewood and served as treasurer for 17 years.
Friends will be received from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home at 329 E. Main St. in Clarksburg. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Congregational Missionary Church in Stonewood with the Rev. O.D. Harman and the Rev. Richard Settles presiding. Mrs. VanGilder will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Stonewall Park Cemetery in Stonewood. Davis-Weaver service.  From 18 Oct 2005.

Emmett Grant VanMeter, 79, of Petersburg, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood.

Patricia Ann “Pat” VanMeter, 65, of Petersburg, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at her home.

Robert Lee VanMeter, 71, of Maysville, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at his residence.

Diana Kay Purkey Godwin, 51, a resident of Mansfield Place, Philippi and a former resident of Mansfield, passed away Monday, June 13, 2005.
She was born May 7, 1954, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late John D. Purkey and Juanita Lake Purkey, who survives in Philippi.
Also surviving are one son, Eric Godwin of Buckhannon; one sister, Patricia “Cookie” Townsend of Philippi; and two brothers, John H. Purkey of Belington and Charles R. Purkey of Philippi.
She worked as a secretary for Grafton Coal Co. She was a Baptist by faith.
Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home at 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi today from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the service hour. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home services.  From 14 Jun 2005.

Russie M. Vanpelt
Russie M. Vanpelt, 96, a former resident of Laurel Mountain Road and Gateway Apartments, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2005, in Davis Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient since Saturday.
Born May 25, 1910, at Mill Creek, she was the daughter of the late Bill and Mary McCauley Taylor.
She was united in marriage to Wirt Vanpelt, who preceded her in death March 31, 1985.
Russie is survived by three daughters, Geraldine Fortney and Mary Bell Harris, both of Elkins, and Genevieve Higgins and husband, James, of Montrose; one son, Raymond Vanpelt and wife, Amy, of Elkins. Also surviving are 30 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She also raised five grandchildren, Mary Wilson, Billie Robertson, Jerry, Donald and Harold Fortney, after their mother passed away.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one daughter, Norma Fortney; one son, Charles Vanpelt; two sisters, 12 brothers and two grandchildren.
Russie was a homemaker and attended Jerusalem United Methodist Church. She enjoyed making quilts, gardening, making flower gardens, putting puzzles together, collecting dolls and spending time with her family. Russie will be sadly missed by those who loved her and will remain in their hearts forever.
Friends will be received after 6 p.m. Friday at F.E. Runner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday from the Runner Chapel. The Rev. A.H. C. Glenn “Polly” Vanscoy, 85, a resident of Dailey, passed away at 7:12 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

C. Glenn Vanscoy
C. Glenn “Polly” Vanscoy, 85, a resident of Dailey since 1945, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, in Davis Memorial Hospital. He had been in his usual health and his death was sudden and unexpected.
He was born at Pettit, Randolph County, a son of the late J. Brown Vanscoy and the late Amy Belle Allender Vanscoy.
His first wife, Mary Linzette MacElveen, preceded him in death. On Aug. 15, 1947, he was untied in marriage to the former Josephine Kayes, who survives at Dailey.
Also surviving are two sons, David Vanscoy and wife, Alice “Tiny”, of Keyser and Allen Vanscoy and wife, Lois, of Dailey; one sister, Mary Castle of Granby, Conn.; four grandsons, Michael and wife, Monica, of Rock Hill, S.C., Allen and wife, Amber, of Elkins, Eric and fiance, Brook Lambert, of Dailey and Gregory Vanscoy of Keyser; one granddaughter, Tricia Vanscoy of Keyser; three great-grandchildren, Bryce Lambert of Dailey and Jessica Sue and Riley Vanscoy, both of Rock Hill, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews including Donald Vanscoy of Elkins.
Preceding him in death were three brothers, Roy, Norman and Clarence Vanscoy; and three sisters, Hazel Shields, Ruby Kisner and June Stalnaker Thurmond.
He attended Parsons High School and graduated from Elkins High School and was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Civilian Conservation Corps. He graduated from Davis & Elkins College in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. He started his teaching career in the one room school at Daughtery, later teaching at Norton before becoming principal at Bowden and Glenmore schools. He then taught math at Tygart Valley High School and at the time of his retirement in November of 1979, was Attendance Director of Randolph County Schools. He was a member of Randolph Lodge 55 AF & AM, Pilgrim Commandery, Knights Templar, American Legion, county-state teachers organizations, Randolph County Senior Center, Charter Member of Dailey-Valley Bend Ruritan Club and was a member of the Tygart Valley Fire Department since 1945. He served as a 4-H Leader for two years and was president of the Tygart Valley Health Association and the AARP. He was a Methodist by faith.

Lucy D. Varchetto
Lucy D. Varchetto, 88, a resident of Spruce Street, Elkins, departed this life Friday morning, July 22, 2005, at Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health.

Virginia D. Vaught
Virginia D. Marteney Vaught, 97, a resident of Mooring Personal Care Home in Buckhannon, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Mooring Personal Care Home in Buckhannon.
She was born April 23, 1908, at Century No. 1, a daughter of the late Odus C. and Martha Ann Crites Marteney.
In 1940, she was united in marriage to George Royden Vaught Jr., who preceded her in death in 1997. They had been married for 57 years.
Surviving are one sister, Annabelle M. Cruise of Culloden; one brother-in-law, Denny J. Cruise of Culloden; three generations of nephews and nieces; and a special care giver, Wendy Woofter.
Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Joseph Marteney, C. Walton Marteney and David C. Marteney; and two sisters, Eva M. Lavoie and Mary Lou Miller Harrison.
She was an Upshur County elementary school teacher, retiring in 1970 from East Main Street School. She had taught school for 46 years, two years in Barbour County and 44 years in Upshur County. For seven years, she was Upshur County music supervisor with remaining years at Vicksburg, Ellamore, Daysville, Adrian and East Main Street Elementary Schools.
At age 5, she was enrolled in Wesleyan Model School. She attended Century and Main Street Elementary schools, graduated from Buckhannon High School in 1925, received a bachelor of arts degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1943 and did graduate studies at West Virginia University.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Buckhannon since 1915, where she was the oldest-living member for most years, and was the church organist for 55 years, Sunday School Junior Department superintendent and teacher, member and past president of American Baptist Women. She was a 50-year member of Buckhannon Chapter 18 Order of Eastern Star and past worthy matron and pianist. She was a member of the Grand Cross of Color of Order of Rainbow, a 50-year member of the American Association of University Women, a member of the West Virginia Wesleyan Emeritus Club, a member and past president of the Upshur County Association of Retired School Employees, a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta International Fraternity, past president of Alpha Omicron Alumnae Chapter and past president of House Association Board and a member and past president of the Fred Brooks Garden Club.
Viewing will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. The Buckhannon Chapter 18 Order of Eastern Star will have services at 7:30 p.m. Friday, she will lie in state at the First Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Billie Scott Mick will officiate and interment will follow in Heavner Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Virginia Marteney Vaught Scholarship Fund at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon or the First Baptist Church. Vena G. Vest
Vena Gladys Vest, 82, of Junior, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at her home following an extended illness.
She was born July 13, 1922, at Mill Creek, Randolph County, a daughter of the late Albert C. and Zella M. McCauley Wiseman.
Her husband, Carl B. Vest, preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Sue Corley and husband, Eddie, Cathy Werner and husband, Gary, all of Belington, and Victoria Ernst of Baxter Springs, Kan.; one brother, Gerald “Doc” Wiseman of East Liverpool, Ohio; three sisters, Janis Pharis of Junior, Mary Scott of Elkins and Betty Bender of Baltimore, Md.; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by three sons, Carl B. Vest Jr., Perry Vest and Daniel Roy Vest; three sisters, Geneva Findley, Elma Riffle and Elsie B. Riffle; and one brother, Elza Wiseman.
Mrs. Vest was a homemaker and was a Methodist by faith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 16, from the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. The Rev. Doyle N. Rider will officiate and interment will follow in the Trinity Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral chapel from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday. The Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements.   From 15 Jul 2005.

Joe Vocesky
Joe Vocesky, 74, a resident of Holbrook Nursing Home in Buckhannon, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 17, 1930, in Taylor County, the son of the late Jim Vocesky and Barbara Vocesky.
He is survived by two nephews, James Whitehair and John M. Whitehair, both of Buckhannon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Bessie Vocesky Whitehair.
He was a disabled veteran.
Friends will be received Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the IOOF Cemetery in Flemington. The Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion and Disabled American Veterans Chapters 5 and 36 will conduct military honors at the graveside.  From 9 Feb 2005.
