Catherine Sabo
Catherine Sabo, 87, of Buckhannon and formerly of Grant Town, Marion County, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
She was born April 12, 1918, in Marion County, a daughter of the late Michael and Marie Vinick.
She was married to John Sabo, who passed away in 1969.
Surviving are three children, John David Sabo of Buckhannon, Jalna Jones of French Creek and Jane Baxter of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Elza of Hamilton, Ohio, Christopher Jones of San Diego, Calif., Paige Ramsey of Denver, Colo., Aarron Baxter of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jeremy McGill, Ian Sabo and Alexis Sabo, all of French Creek; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Adam Vinick of Cleveland, Ohio.
Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Dottie, and three sisters.
She was a homemaker and member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Viewing will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Fr. T. LaMar Sager
T. LaMar Sager, 70, of Moorefield, passed this life on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at his residence.
He was born in Petersburg on Aug. 27, 1934, the son of the late Ted. R. Sager and the late Agnes Resser Sager.
He was preceded in death by one son.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Phyllis Silvester Sager, of Moorefield. Also surviving are three daughters, Tamara Ann Kesner, Mary Beth Hardy and Stephanie Ours, all of Moorefield; and one aunt.
He was a retired business owner of Sager Insurance Agency. He attended Shepherd College where he received a bachelor’s degree. He was very active in the community, a former school teacher, served on town council and former mayor of Moorefield. He was a member of the Epiphany Catholic Church of Moorefield.
The family will receive friends today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Elmore Funeral Home. Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Epiphany Catholic Church of Moorefield with the Fr. Salvatore Riccardi, Fr. Mario Claro and Fr. Richard Hite officiating. Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Wilson, Oscar Bean, Rod Gunter, Don Smith, Roger Sherman, Jim Peters and Junior Kesner. T. LaMar Sager
T. LaMar Sager, 70, of Moorefield, passed this life on Jan. 12, 2005, at his residence.

Ernest H. Sainato
Ernest Herman Sainato, 81, a resident of 40 Locust St., Elkins, and more recently a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, departed this life Saturday evening, June 25, 2005, at the nursing home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born Saturday, Feb. 9, 1924, at Harding, a son of the late Rocco Sainato and Delia Sainato.
On June 2, 1949, he was married to the former Susie Gordon, who preceded him in death March 6, 1989.
Surviving are two daughters, Sherry Hammer and husband, Tom, and Sandy Williams and husband, Doug, all of Elkins; six grandchildren, Adam D’Angelo and wife, Sarah, of Elkins, Holly Williams Cutright and husband, Scott, of Virginia Beach, Va., Jacob D’Angelo and wife, Allison, of Elkins, Amy Williams White and husband, Tim, of Elkins, Hope D’Angelo Anderson and husband, Kent, of Elkins and Emily Williams of Elkins; one stepgranddaughter, Nicole Hammer; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Grace Cutright of Virginia Beach, Va.; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Brooklyn Nadia Rizzo of Elkins; three brothers, Joseph Sainato of Poland, Ohio, Nick Sainato of Akron, Ohio, and Sam Sainato of Morgantown; and one sister, Elizabeth Antolini of Elkins.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife were three brothers, Victor, Frank and Dominick Sainato.
Ernie was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Saint Brendan Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 603. As a member of the Elkins Lodge 1135 BPOE, he served as coach and commissioner of Babe Ruth Baseball for several years. He retired from the Columbia Gas System in 1983 after 25 years of service.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. On Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home, a prayer service will be recited by the Rev. Fr. Perry J. Salisbury
Perry Jasper Salisbury, 81, a resident of Monterville, departed this life Friday, March 18, 2005, at Veterans Administration Medical Center at Beckley. He had been in declining health.
He was born Thursday, Dec. 27, 1923, at Blue Springs, Monterville, a son of the late Whitney C. Salisbury and Nettie E. Hight Salisbury.
Surviving are two nephews, Frank W. Salisbury Jr. and Clayborn J. Salisbury, both of Monterville; two great-nephews, Daniel Wilson Carpenter and Bradley Stewart Carpenter, both of Marlinton; three nieces, Thelma Jane Carpenter and Cathryn Carpenter, both of Marlinton, and Sharon Chapman of Ohio; five great-nieces, Sarah Jane Salisbury of Huttonsville, Brandy Jane Carpenter of Marlinton, Megan Bookmyer and Courtney Keaton, both of Ohio, and Amanda Chapman of Grafton; and five great-great-nieces, Kailey Carpenter of Marlinton, Destiny Dawn Swecker of Huttonsville, Hailee Chapman, Elexis Chapman and Savannah Keaton, all of Ohio.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were two brothers, Frank Wilson Salisbury Sr. and Howard Ray Salisbury.
He attended the one-room school at Mud Lick and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was awarded two Purple Hearts. He helped cut the slopes for the Snowshoe Mountain Resort in the early 1970s, was a farmer, loved flowers and was noted for playing string music.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. On Tuesday, Mr. Salisbury will be moved to Brady Gate Church where final rites will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Robert L. Albert “Al” Duane Saltsman, 66, a resident of Beverly Mobile Home Court, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at 10:50 a.m., at his residence. He had been in failing health for the past year. However, his condition had deteriorated this past weekend. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The F.E. Albert D. Saltsman
Albert “Al” Duane Saltsman, 66, a resident of Beverly Mobile Home Court, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005. He had been in failing health for the past year; however, his condition had become critical this past weekend.
Born Jan. 6, 1939, in Leavittsburg, Ohio, he was the son of the late Oscar and Emma Hogue Saltsman.
On Nov. 4, 1967, he was united in marriage to the former Wanda McCauley, who survives in Beverly.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by eight daughters, Rhonda White and fiance, Jeff, of Elkins, DeaVonda Saltsman and fiance, Alan, of Huttonsville, Linda Kimmick and husband, Kyle, of Ocola, Fla., Shenna Wright and husband, Robert, of Pikeville, Ky., Debbie Elbon and husband, Greg, Amber Saltsman and Sierra and Gabriel Buckley, all of Beverly; and one son, Duane Saltsman and wife, Tina, of Morgantown. Also surviving are two sisters, Deloris Horning and husband, Fred, of Atwater, Ohio, and Goldie Harper and husband, Lloyd “Danny,” of Ravenna, Ohio; three brothers, Warren Saltsman of Southington, Ohio, Kenneth Saltsman and wife, Ann, of Ravenna, Ohio, and Carl Saltsman and wife, Maxine, of Atwater, Ohio; his mother-in-law, Ruth G. McCauley of Beverly; 18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
Preceding him in death were his father-in-law, Ralph McCauley; paternal grandparents, William and Mertie Saltsman; maternal grandparents, Albert and Bertha Houge; three brothers, Robert Saltsman, Mike Saltsman and Elwood Saltsman; a sister-in-law, Carol Saltsman; and a great-grandchild, Levi Houge.
Al was employed by International Union Operating Engineers Local 132 as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1999 after 35 years of service. Al also liked working on cars, loved reading the Bible and spending time with his family. He attended Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church and New Life Fellowship. Al will be sadly missed by his family and friends and will remain in their heart forever.
Friends will be received after 6 p.m. today at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Frank Long, pastor of Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery at East Dailey. F.E. Ernest H. Samples
Ernest H. Samples, 78, of Louisville, Ky., died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005.
He was a native of Rock Cave, an Army Veteran of World War II and the Korean War, retired from the old Naval Ordnance and a graduate of the University of Louisville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Brooks Samples
He is survived by his daughters, Marcia Rowland, Cheryl Hoerter and Bonnie Bond; his companion, Marcia Sympson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ralph L. Samples
Ralph L. Samples, 95, a resident of Conley Run, Valley Head, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at 7:57 a.m., at his residence. He had been in failing health, however, death was sudden and unexpected.
Born July 15, 1909, at Pennsboro, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary Cotrill Samples.
He was united in marriage to the former Eleanora P. Hamrick, who preceded him in death on April 7, 1992.
He is survived by seven daughters, Norma Samples and Dottie Canip, both of Virginia, Betty Sturms and husband, Lorren, of Montrose, Marry Ann Arbogast of Indian Head, Md., Virginia Channell and husband, Michael, of Valley Head, Susan Culley and husband, George, of Wheeling, and Ruth Porter and husband, Chuck, of Florida; six sons, Ralph “Junior” Samples Jr. of Valley Bend, Ray Samples and Michael Samples and wife, Cheryl, all of Valley Head, Harold “Hank” Samples, who made his home with his dad for the past several years, Gale Samples and wife, JoAnn, of Martins Ferry, Ohio, and Raymond Samples of Huntington; three sisters, Frankie McAtee and Angus Simmons, both of Pennsboro, and Isabelle Young of St. Mary’s; two brothers, Harry Samples and wife, Mabel, of New London, Ohio, and Clifton Samples and wife, Shirley, of Pennsboro; 23 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife were one daughter, Donna Dovel; one son, William “Bill” Hamrick; two sisters, Dessie and Ona; two brothers, Alvie and Woodrow Samples; and one grandson, Phillip Samples.
He was a graduate of Pennsboro High School. He was a coal miner retiring in 1971 with 45 years of service. He was a Protestant by faith. He was an avid fisherman and gardener, loved ginsanging and sports, especially baseball and football. He played the fiddle for several years; it was one of his passions. He played at the Augusta festivals and had played a few events with Woodie Simmons. He also did woodworking and was a collector of old coins. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends and will be in their hearts forever.
Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel Friday after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel Saturday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Verl Simmons, pastor of the Stone Coal United Methodist Church of Weston, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Point Mountain Cemetery at Webster Springs. The F.E. Jeffrey Allen Sampson, 42, a resident of 160 Delaware Ave., Elkins, departed this life Saturday evening at the Davis Memorial Hospital Emergency Department.

Jeffrey A. Sampson
Jeffrey Allan Sampson, 42, a resident of 160 Delaware Ave., departed this life Saturday evening, March 5, 2005, at Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected and attributed to cardiac arrest.
He was born Thursday, Jan. 17, 1963, at Elkins, a son of the late Edward Sampson and Mamie Cathleen Hedrick Sampson Eshbaugh, who survives. He had never married.
Also surviving are one brother, Richard Sampson and wife, Sandy, of Beverly; several nieces and nephews; many cousins; and two very special friends, Tommy Haynes and Barb Spiva, both of Elkins.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sandra K. Sampson Rohr and Cheryl Sampson Swecker; one brother, Ronald “Pete” Sampson; one nephew, Steven Rohr; his stepfather, Max Kenneth Eshbaugh; six half sisters, Lois Eshbaugh, Stella Arnold, Unavale Burns, Eileen Martine, Helen Kosonic and Genieve Gregory; and one half brother, Delbert “Buck” Sampson.
Mr. Sampson had been disabled for many years and enjoyed working on and restoring cars and trucks. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends, but most of all taking care of his mother, with whom he made his home. He will be greatly missed by everyone. He was a Nazarene by faith.

Charles J. Sanders
Charles John Sanders, 85, of Dayton, Ohio, and St. Petersburg, Fla., passed away Monday, March 14, 2005.
He was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Philippi, a son of the late Nora Fallen and Lloyd Charles Sanders.
A loving husband of the late Dorothy Feindel Sanders; devoted father of Patricia and Jim Rouff; caring grandfather of Milissa and Jesse Dorman and Jeffery and Teresa Rouff; and great-grandfather of Morgan and Emily Rouff. Charles is also survived by his sister, Dorothy and Jack Basil; his brother, Sherwood “Bud” Sanders, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerald Sanders, a veteran of World War II, and Junior Thomas Sanders.
Charles attended the local schools in Randolph County, graduated from Elkins High School and attended Davis & Elkins College. Charles retired from the U.S. Air Force after 37 years of service, having attained the rank of major.
A service celebrating Charles’ life was held at 10 a.m. today at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Vandalia, Ohio. Graveside services followed.  From 5 Apr 2005.

Gracie A. Sanders
Gracie Allen Sanders, 92, of Route 1, French Creek, the Czar community, died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at her home
She was born May 31, 1912, at Hacker Valley in Webster County, a daughter of the late Wade H. and Daisy Allen Langdon McClure.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Sanders.
She is survived by one son, Johnny L. Kittle of French Creek; five daughters, Betty Arnold and Nora Simons, both of Greenwich, Ohio, Evelyn M. Thompson of Sacramento, Calif., Mable Cogar of Buckhannon and Carol A. Sanders of Helvetia; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ina May Warner of Cleveland, Ohio, Mary Foster of Parsons and Daisy Helmick of Kerens; and one brother, Fred McClure of Pickens.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Walter Umbright and Charles F. Kittle; one daughter, Dorthy Jean Riggleman; two sisters, Myrtle Cutright and Nora McClure; and three brothers, Coy McClure and two infant brothers.
Mrs. Sanders enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel. William H. Sanders
William Herbert Sanders, a resident of Route 1, Elkins, passed away Wednesday morning, Jan. 5, 2005, at his home. He had been in declining health for the past several months.
He was born in Randolph County, a son of the late William Thomas Sanders and Lena Grace Knavenshue Sanders.
On Dec. 24, 1938, he was married to the former May Mathew, who preceded him in death, December 30, 2001.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley May Sanders of Vienna and Barbara Ann Hanna of Elkins; two granddaughters, Heather D. Hanna of Durham, N.C. and Alyssa B. Hanna of Morgantown.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife were one sister, Agnes Stewart and one infant brother, Clyde Thomas Sanders.
He attended the schools of Randolph County and was an automobile mechanic by trade. He was an employee of the former Randolph Garage and later was employed by Abernathy Motors. He was a service foreman for Bard Motors until his retirement.
During World War II, he was employed by the Glen L. Martin Aircraft Corp. as an electrical technician on the Martin PBM Marauder and the B-26 Mariner. He attended the First United Methodist Church of Elkins. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Oscar W. Sayre
Oscar W. Sayre, 89, of HC 78, Box 107, Rock Cave, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at his home.
He was born Nov. 17, 1915, at Holly Grove, a son of the late Clee O. Sayre and Orpha Woody Sayre.
On Jan. 25, 1939, he was married to Maxine Sayre, who survives.
Also surviving are two granddaughters, Jane Rocky and husband, Bill, of Buckhannon and Beverly Metz and husband, Mickey, of Glenville; one great-grandson, Seth Rocky of Buckhannon; two great-granddaughters, Beth Rocky of Buckhannon and Crystal Metz of Glenville; one brother, Troy Sayer of French Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Kyle G. Sayre; one grandson, Kyle Neal Sayre; two brothers and four sisters.
He was a farmer and attended Canaan Community Church.

Dessie May Schoonover, 99, of Route 2, Belington, died Wednesday evening, July 6, 2005, at the home of a daughter-in-law, following an extended illness.
She was born April 27, 1906, near Belington, a daughter of the late Jake Riley England and the late Zora Godwin England.
On May 3, 1924, she was married to Stuart B. Schoonover, who preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1978.
Also surviving are one son, Gerald Schoonover and wife, Shirley, of Niles, Ohio; one daughter, Carol Hillyard and husband, Fax, of Elyria, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Agatha Ruth Schoonover, with whom she had made her home for several years; 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 24 great- great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Geraldine Schoonover and Joan Everson; three sons, Glenn Alfred Schoonover and twin infant sons; three sisters; one grandson, Doug Hillyard; one great-granddaughter and one great-great-grandson.
Mrs. Schoonover was a homemaker. She was a member of the Mountain View Farm Women’s Club, Belington Rebekah Lodge 181 and the Valley Bend Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Belington Emergency Squad.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington. The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate and interment will follow in the Belington Fraternal Cemetery. Lelia Ann Schoonover, 73, a resident of Mansfield Place, Philippi, formerly of Locust Avenue, Philippi, and Laurel View Apartments, Belington, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 16, 2005, in the Broaddus Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born, Sept. 26, 1931, in Elk District, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Goff and Ivah Virginia Bartlett Thomas.
On April 8, 1950, she was married to Eugene Clay Schoonover, who survives at Laurel View Apartments, Belington.
Also surviving are five children, Gary E. Schoonover and wife, Kathy, Ronald C. Schoonover and wife, Debbie, Betty D. Crowther and husband, Jeff, all of Philippi, Teresa R. Matthews, and husband, Danny, Oak Hill, Ohio, and Randell R. Schoonover and companion, Judy Loughry, of Kingwood; 11 grandchildren, Andrea, Jennifer and Tim Schoonover, Heidi and Clayson Schoonover, Jeremy, Sam and Lindsey Crowther, Levi Matthews, and Abebrum and Sara Schoonover; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Malcolm of Clarksburg and Mrs. Betty McDaniel of Philippi; two brothers, Robert L. Thomas and Hugh S. Thomas, both of Philippi; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lucille Marie Lantz, Sally Rose Walker and Lila Jean Short; and by one brother, Earl W. Thomas.
Mrs. Schoonover was a 1949 graduate of Philippi High School. She was a homemaker and had worked in the late 1940s for the G.C. Murphy Co., in the late 1960s for Reidbord Brothers Clothing and had briefly operated the cafeteria in the Myers Clinic. She was a member of the Mansfield United Methodist Church and Philippi Chapter 41 OES. She was a past president of the Town and Country Lamplighters Homemakers Club and was a director emeritus of the Barbour County Fair Association. Mrs. Schoonover was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a gifted seamstress and dressmaker and was known by many for her raised doughnuts.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St. in Philippi. The Rev. Linda Payton and the Rev. Alicia Rapking will officiate and interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Charles Kenneth “Cooney” Scott, 95, a resident of Coalton, passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, in the Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department.
He was born April 26, 1910, at Coalton, a son of the late John K. and Nora Condrey Scott.
On Sept. 8, 1933, he was married to the former Mary Louise Phillips, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are five sons, John Kenneth Scott and wife, Maryann, of Vienna, Ohio, Robert Leonard Scott and wife, Rosalee, Richard Scott and wife, Linda, James David Scott and wife, Bertha, all of Coalton, Robert Lee Scott and wife, Millie, of Moorefield; two daughters, Eleanor Zirkle and husband, Gordon, of Coalton and Ann Teter and husband, Earle, of Elkins; 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death was one son, Frankie Scott, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Scott had worked as a coal miner and was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways at Coalton. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved driving in the country.

Geraldine P. “Gerry” Phares Scott, 76, a former resident of Valley Bend and more recently of Asheville, N.C., departed this life Friday, April 22, 2005, at the Mountain Hospice/Solace Center at Asheville. She had been in declining health, and death was attributed to ALS.
She was born Thursday, May 31, 1928, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Leland J. Phares and Portia Grace Gear Phares. Her beloved husband, Lewis Earle Scott, preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, James L.M. Webb of Asheville, N.C., and John A. Webb of Columbia, S.C.; two daughters, Jean Ann Webb Robinson and husband, Frank, of Warren, Ohio, and Jennifer Webb Hicks and husband, Lynn, of Asheville, N.C.; two stepsons, Dennis and Robert Scott; one stepdaughter, Brenda Scott Soper; 10 grandchildren, Leslie Baker, Liz Mattingly, Alana Barnes, Jamie Webb, Chad Winans, Julie Preusch, Alison Keith, Jaime Keith, Brooks Keith and Jimmy Webb; four great-grandchildren, Marley, Isaac, Phares and Grayson; seven stepgrandchildren, Cortney, Sarah, Jeanette, Tiffany, Justin, Hannah and Dylan; two nephews, Keith Webb and Bart Schauman; and one niece, Ellen Hathaway.

Life will not be complete for her friends and family without her smile and constant warm attitude.

Samuel J. Scott
Samuel John Scott, 80, a resident of Beverly, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born May 8, 1924, at Mill Creek, a son of the late Claude P. Scott and Minnie Stanley Scott.
On Aug. 8, 1945, at Elkins, he was married to the former Edith Long, who preceded him in death Feb. 23, 1989.
He is survived by two sons, Sanford C. Scott of Scranton, Pa., and Franklin C. Scott of Gilbert, Ariz.; one sister, Doris Riggleman of Beverly; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Samuel J. Scott Jr. and Roy Alan Scott; and one sister, Betty Lee Scott.
Mr. Scott served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel where he worked as a scheduler.
At the request of the deceased, his remains will be cremated. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Samuel John Scott.  From 9 Feb 2005. 

Bessie Selders
Bessie Selders, 93, a resident of 515 Wilson St., Elkins, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 25, 1912, at St. George, a daughter of the late Harold Edgar and Melvina Corley Moutz.
She was married to Roy Selders, who preceded her in death Jan. 5, 1995.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth L. Selders of Elkins and Ronald J. Selders and wife, Joy, of Elkins; a daughter, Dolores Gail Broughton and husband, Virgil, of Elkins; nine grandchildren, Ronald, Matt, Mike, Terry and David Selders, Van, Jeff and Chris Broughton and Beth Dillon; and 14 great-grandchildren also survive.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Lawrence and John Moutz; an infant sister, Irene; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Selders was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1930. She was a homemaker, seamstress, doll maker, operated a beauty salon with her mother and along with her husband, owned and operated the Cardinal Motel in Elkins for several years. She was a member of the Randolph Chapter 74 Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elkins for more than 70 years, where she served as a Sunday school teacher.

Ruby Ethel Selders, 82, of Hopemont, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2005, at Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood.
She was born Aug. 23, 1922, in Accident, a daughter of the late Charlie and Mary Hanline Dumire.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Selders, in 1975; one daughter, Alberta Cosner; one brother, Blane Dumire; and one sister, Luella Fike.
She is survived by two sons, Everett and Sherry Selders of Reedsville and Earl and Susan Selders of Aurora; two brothers, Otis Dumire and Pete Dumire, both of Elkins; two sisters, Pauline Leary of Davis and Mildred Sturms of Elkins; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Selders was a housewife and a Methodist by faith.

Debra L. Selman
Debra Lynn Selman, 45, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Candler Hospital in Savannah, Ga.
She was a graduate of Armstrong Atlanta State University and also Leadership Savannah. She was a long time activist for disabilities rights, was a board member of LIFE, a member of ADAPT, and a founding member of the St. James Storytellers Group, which encouraged members to leave institutional life for more independent living. She was active in the Thomas Square Neighborhood Association and was devoted to the children of the Delaware Youth Center. She was known by many and appreciated for her faithfulness, her fearlessness and for her insight and insistence.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Corbitt and Myrtle Selman, and two brothers, Gary and Junior Selman.
Surviving are her husband, Christopher Dunn Johnson; two brothers, Kenneth Selman of Pooler, Ga., and Roger Selman of Montgomery, Ala.; three sisters, Sandra Woods of Cowen, Kathy Conner of Guyton, Ga., and Karen Cooper of Swainsboro, Ga.; several nieces and nephews including Kyle and Rachel Conner of Guyton, Ga.; and her foster parents, Mark and Bonnie McAllister of Seneca Rocks.
Visitation was Dec. 12, 2004, at the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home in Savannah, Ga. Funeral services were Dec. 13, 2004, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Earnie Pirkle officiating. Surviving are three daughters, Norma Cornell, with whom she had resided for the past two years, of Akron, Ohio, Janet Prince, of Carrollton, Texas, and Nancy Landram of Champagne, Ill.; one son, Wilbert Sevier of Irwin, Pa.; three brothers, Amer Poling of Elkins, Elwood Poling of Augusta and Russell Poling of Niles, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Rodney Cornell, Michelle Cornell, Lisa Hug, Matthew Sevier, Douglas Sevier and Shelly Sevier, Todd Prince and Krista Prince; three great-grandchildren, Dusty Cornell, Rebekah Cornell and Brooke Rynes.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Isabell Coffman and Delphia Bowman; and by one brother, Edward Poling.
Mrs. Sevier was a homemaker. She was a member of the Shiloh Church of the Brethren.

Harold W. Shaffer, 97, of 205 N. High Street, Philippi, died Sunday evening, Jan. 23, 2005. in the United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following a brief illness.
He was born May 28, 1907, in Tucker County, a son of the late Harry S. and Stella Adams Shaffer.
On April 10, 1952, he married the former Ruth Forman, who survives at North High Street in Philippi.
Also surviving are two nephews, James A. Shaffer of Greenville, Pa., currently on sabbatical in Sitka, Alaska, and Hubert A. Shaffer Jr. of Charlottesville, Va.; three grandnephews, David Shaffer, Daniel Shaffer and James Shaffer.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Shaffer and one brother, Hubert A. Shaffer.
Mr. Shaffer was a graduate of Fairmont State College and held a master’s degree from West Virginia University. He was a retired Tucker County school teacher and a former delegate to the West Virginia House of Delegates from Tucker County. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. Mr. Shaffer was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Parsons, the West Virginia Education Association and Tucker County Retired School Employees. He was a member of the board of directors of the Barbour County Senior Citizens. He was also a benefactor of the Barbour County Senior Citizens Center, the Tucker County Senior Citizens Center, the First United Methodist Church and several service agencies.
Friends may call at the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday, when Mr. Shaffer will be moved to the First United Methodist Church in Parsons where friends may call from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Alicia Rapking and the Rev. David Fuller. According to Mr. Shaffer’s request, his remains will be cremated. Kurt L. Shaffer, 82, of Euclid Ave., Thomas, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas.
He was born May 1, 1923, at Pierce, a son of the late Luke Ferguson and Lillian Frances Yoakum Shaffer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Marie Dillon Shaffer, in May 1994. Also preceding him in death were two brothers, William and Luke Jr., and one sister, Nancy Arnold.
Survivors include one son, Steve and Linda Shaffer of Thomas; one daughter, Susan and Charlie Moore of Thomas; one brother, Robert Shaffer of Hughesville, Md.; two sisters, Frederica Ryan of Lore City, Ohio, and Peggy Evans of St. George; and two grandchildren, Jason and Erika Shaffer.
Mr. Shaffer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, Veterans of Foreign Wars Garnet Post 4322. He was a retired supervisor for Buffalo Coal Co. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Thomas, Thomas Fairfax Lodge 174, Scottish Rite Bodies and Shriners.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Hinkle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Sarah E. Shaffer
Sarah Elizabeth Shaffer, 82, a resident of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, Belington, formerly of Philippi, died Saturday morning, May 28, 2005, in the Good Samaritan Center, following an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 25, 1922, at Belington, a daughter of the late John Wesley and Jane Clarecy Layman Cathell.
On May 17, 1941, she was married to Roscoe T. Shaffer, who preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1979.
Survivors include a foster daughter, Lynn Monahan and husband, Junior, of Parsons; stepdaughter, Virginia Gay Cross and husband, Edward, of Streetsboro, Ohio; foster grandson, Adam Bo Carr of Worthington; one sister, Dolly Simpson of Elkins; two stepgrandsons, Chuck Cross and Lee Cross, both of Streetsboro; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Melissa Cross; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Carrie Hill, Blanche England, Callie Marie Corley, Myrtle Talbert and Nellie Barber; seven brothers, Howard Cathell, Ralph Cathell, Mitchell Cathell, Johnie Cathell, Bertsell Cathell, Clifford “Bud” Cathell and Wilbur Cathell; and two half sisters, Ethel Rollins and Daisy Cathell.
Mrs. Shaffer was retired from the laundry department of the Broaddus Hospital with 35 years service. She was a member of the Philippi United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 So. Main Street, Philippi at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, with Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.

Carl J. Sharp
Carl James Sharp, 85, of Marlinton, died Dec. 15, 2005 at Allegheny Regional Hospital, LowMoor, Va.
He was born at Marlinton Sept. 16, 1920, the first born of 13 to Milburn and Pearl Beverage Sharp.
Carl enjoyed boating, crabbing, fishing, hunting and one of his favorites, gardening. He was a member of Marlinton Moose Lodge 2233, American Legion Post 50, Veterans of Foreign Wars Military Order of the Cooties and a life member of Pocahontas Post 4595 Marlinton. He was Protestant by faith.
In 1938 at the age of 18, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. In 1942, he sailed from New York City on the SS Brazil to Karachi, India, where he participated in the China-Burma-India Pacific Theater during World War II. As a member of the 835th Signal Corps, he would spend the next three years in the vital role of installing communication cables that were the key factor in the success of opening up the Ledo Road in China under the command of Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell. At the end of WW II, he converted from the Army Air Corps to the U.S. Air Force, where he completed 30 years of service as a telephone communications expert. He completed three tours at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, one tour at Lajes Field in Azores, Portugal and one tour at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska.
He married Virginia Dare Moretz Sharp of West Jefferson, N.C., June 13, 1953.
They have three surviving sons, Barry James Sharp, Nathan Milburn Sharp and Jeffery Carlton Sharp, all of Marlinton. In addition, he is survived by brothers and sisters, Eula Moore, Edna Webb, Ann Hannah, Dorothy McCombs, Claude Sharp Sr., Jane Madron, Margaret Channel, Ray Sharp, Ralph Sharp, Nancy Hagar and Johnny P. Sharp. He has nine surviving grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jenny Cutlip; and his wife, Virginia.
The Rev. Greg Moore conducted funeral services today at 11 a.m. at Marlinton Presbyterian Church. Mr. Sharp was laid to rest next to his wife in Mountain View Cemetery with military honors by Pocahontas County Veterans Honor Corps. Friends called Monday at VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton. Mabelle G. Sharp
Mabelle Grace Cokeley Sharp, 83, of Buckhannon, died peacefully at her home Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005.
She was born May 10, 1922, at Harrisville in Ritchie County, the daughter of the late Lon L. Cokeley and Blanche Watkins Cokeley.
On Aug. 20, 1950, she married Herbert L. Sharp, who survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are two daughters, Norrine Kay Scherler and husband, William, of Somerset, N.J., and Cathy J. Sharp of Woodside, N.Y.; three sons, Steven L. Sharp and wife, Kathy, of Poolesville, Md., Gary D. Sharp and wife, Jamie, of Charles Town and Kevin R. Sharp and wife, Vicki, of Buckhannon; and seven grandchildren, Laura Scherler of Arlington, Va., Kate Scherler of Brooklyn, N.Y., David Scherler of Somerset, N.J., Allison and Alicia Sharp, both of Buckhannon, and twins, Adam and Austin Sharp, both of Charles Town. She is also survived by two brothers, William L. Cokeley and wife, Madeline, of Issaquah, Wash., and George Cokeley of St. Mary’s; one sister, Ruth Cokeley Carlson of Frederick, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen Summers Cokeley, widow of her brother Robert, who has been like a sister to her, lives in Harrisville, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Cokeley; a brother, Robert Cokeley, a sister-in-law, Edna Cokeley; and a brother-on-law, Dale Carlson.
Better known as “Mabe,” she attended the public schools of Ritchie County and graduated from Harrisville High School in 1940. She earned a Smith/Hughes bachelor of science degree in home economics from West Virginia University in 1944 and taught home economics in schools in Sandyville, Cairo, Buckhannon and Lansing, Mich., before retiring in 1986. She was a master seamstress and loved to make her own clothes as well as for her daughters and others.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she served on several committees, was a Lois Circle Leader for 10 years and a member of the Wesley Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Fred Brooks Garden Club, Buckhannon Women’s Club, West Virginia Professional Educators Association, Kappa Phi Educational Honorary, Upshur County Retired Teachers Association and associate member of the Emeritus Club of West Virginia Wesleyan College, as well as two bridge clubs. She was also an honorary lifetime member of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
She loved to work with flowers around the home, and reading and needlecrafts were her hobbies. Her special loves were her five children and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon with the Rev. Billie Scott Mick officiating. Burial will be in Veterans Memorial Section of Heavner Cemetery. Eulah G. Shaw, 98, a resident of the Graybrier, Archdale, N.C., formerly of Gall Avenue, Belington, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, June 2, 2005, in Archdale, N.C.
She was born May 17, 1907, at Olive Hill, Barbour County, a daughter of the late John R. and Olive Oaster Heltzel.
Her husband, Clarence H. “Dick” Shaw, preceded her in death on June 20, 1966.
Survivors include one daughter, Maxine Boylen and husband, Wilford, of Archdale, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Terry L. Smith of Clarksburg, Randal S. Smith of Fairmont, Richard D. Smith, address unknown, Joyce Ward, Jean Herbert, Julie Hunt, Mark Boylen, all of Archdale, N.C., Jackie Allred of Kernersville, N.C., Max Boylen of Baden Lake, N.C.; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Louise Shaw Smith, in March 2000.
Mrs. Shaw was a homemaker and was a former employee and volunteer at the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington. She was a member of the West Side United Methodist Church in Belington and a 60- year member of Philippi Chapter 41, O.E.S.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Schoonover- Stemple Funeral Chapel, 609 Crim Ave., Belington, at 2 p.m. Monday, June 6. The Rev. Rose “Jo” McCartney will officiate and interment will follow in the Cross Roads Cemetery.

Rose M. Shaw
Rose M. Shaw, 100, a resident of Mansfield Place, Philippi, formerly of Route 1, Moatsville, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 1, 2005, in Mansfield Place following an extended illness.
She was born July 2, 1904, at Tacy, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Wesley Milton “Jack” and Valley Bird Hershman Sturm.
On Sept. 28, 1927, she was married to L. Fred Shaw, who preceded her in death June 19, 1987.
Surviving are one nephew, Eugene Sturm and wife, Shirley, of Belington; four nieces, Maxine Poling, Jean Kines and Judy Hodgkinson, all of Philippi, and Nadine Bolyard of Moatsville.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Ira Sturm.
Mrs. Shaw was a homemaker and was the oldest member of the Cross Roads United Methodist Church.

Thomas F. Shaw, 70, of Selbyville, died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at his home under the care of Peoples Hospice.
He was born May 17, 1935, at Slatyfork, a son of the late Norman W. and Eula Conrad Shaw.
He was united in marriage Sept. 3, 1978 to Dorothy D. Betler Shaw, who survives.
He is also survived by three sons, Terry and wife, Crystal Shaw, Tom and wife, Lisa Shaw, and Tim and wife, Diana Shaw, all of Buckhannon; one stepson, Greg and wife, Terry Shingleton, of Morgantown; two daughters, Leisa and husband, Randy Bonner, of Mt. Clare and Gwyn and husband, Warrick Osburn, of Warrenton, Va.; 10 grandsons, Michael and wife, Tiffany Shaw, Mitchell, Travis, T.J. and Derrick Shaw, Brooks and J.T. Osburn and Nathan, Daniel and Michael Bonner; four granddaughters, Krista and Kaitlyn Shaw and Ashley and Kristen Bonner; three stepgrandchildren, Brandy, Misty and Hillary Shingleton; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Berna Shingleton and Skyler Demidovich. Also surviving are one brother, Norman W. Shaw of Marlinton; one sister, Virginia Morris of Prairieville, La.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Joyce Shaw.
Mr. Shaw was a carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. He was a member of American Legion Post 0148 of Alexander. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was proud to be a lifelong, good, staunch conservative republican. He was a member of the Rock Cave Baptist Church.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel. Mr. Shaw will be moved to Rock Cave Baptist Church Thursday, where he will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour with Pastor David Jessie and Pastor Ed Lowther officiating. Wade H. Sherman
Wade Hampton Sherman, 84, of Louisville, Ky., died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Baptist Hospital East.
He was born April 22, 1920, to Wade H. and Effie Pearl Sherman in Montrose.
He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 before joining the U.S. Army, where he served in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked in 1941. At the time of his discharge, he had achieved the rank of second lieutenant.
He married Edythe Gordon Arnold in 1943, worked a year for Jeff Boat in Jeffersonville, Ind., then joined IBM where he worked for 34 years before retiring in 1978.
He was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee for 34 years and was active in the Old Kentucky Home Council of Boy Scouts of America, founding Pack 314 and serving as cub master. He completed Wood Badge training and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of Masonic Plumb Lodge 862, a Kentucky Colonel, enjoyed traveling in his motor home, loved to garden, was a big University of Louisville fan and was devoted to his little dog, Brandy.
Mr. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Harley Reed Sherman, Zealon “Zeke” Sherman and Hayes Sherman; and his sisters, Sylvia Dudley, Ogda Ruth Haer, Mary Alice Gum and Addalea Ours.
Mr. Sherman is survived by his wife of 62 years; his sons, D. Terrell Sherman and wife, Millie, of San Ramon, Calif., Thomas D. Sherman and fiancee, Gloria Tanon, of Apopka, Fla., Richard A Sherman and wife, Marilyn, of Sikeston, Mo. and William W. Sherman and wife, Gayle, of Louisville, Ky.; his daughters, Kathryn H. Sherman of Owensboro, Ky., and Barbara A. Broadway and husband, Lou, of Sanford, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence “Pete” Sherman, and a sister, Marguerite Mullenex, both of Parsons; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Tuesday at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, Ky. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 319 Browns Lane, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Nora Dell “Hazel” Shiflett, 63, a resident of Coalton, passed away Thursday evening, Dec. 30, 2004, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 4, 1941, in Harrisburg, Pa., a daughter of the late Sylvester and Christine Zirkle.
She was married to Paul Shiflett, who survives at Coalton.
Also surviving are three sons, Robert, Timothy and Randall Shiflett, all of Coalton; two sisters, Marjorie and Esteen; one half brother, David Zirkle of Coalton; one half sister, Alice Shomo of Coalton; and two grandsons, Jason and Philip Shiflett.
Preceding her in death were one daughter, Debra Shiflett; two sisters, Myrtle and Dorothy; and one half brother, Jackson Zirkle.
She was employed in the respirator therapy department of Davis Memorial Hospital prior to the retirement.

Tressie M. Shiflett, 71, a resident of Philipsburg, Pa., formerly of Pickens, died Sunday, March 13, 2005, in Clearfield Hospital, Clearfield, Pa.
She was born Aug. 29, 1933, in Pickens, a daughter of the late Ottomore and Elsie Peck Bachman.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Tunning and husband, James, of Buckhannon, and Tammy Mancuso and husband, Joseph, of Sellersville, Pa.; two sons, Stanley Casto and wife, Michele, of Houtzdale, Pa., and Mark Shiflett and wife, Terri, of Winburn, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Amy Frantz, Meredith Hamilton, Jessica Kovaloski, Holly Canfield, James Tunning, Mark Shiflett, Kristin Shiflett and Trisha Mancuso; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Hester Heck and husband, Lee, of Tennerton, Cecelia Black and husband, Owen, of Buckhannon and Nellie Thorne and husband, Frank, of Florida; and two brothers, Randolph Bachman and wife, Nora, of New Mexico and Dennis Bachman and wife, Gatha, of Virginia.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Nethkan; and two brothers, Arthur and Joseph Bachman.
She was retired from Brooks Instrument in Hatfield, Pa., and attended Pickens Baptist Church.

Audrey Katherine Greathouse “Katie” Shiley, 91, of Natural Bridge, Va., died Thursday, March 24, 2005, in The Roanoke United Methodist Home. Hugh L. Shinaberry
Hugh Lawrence Shinaberry, 47, a resident of Barbour County, died Oct. 2, 2005, as a result of a motorcycle accident on U.S. 219 in Elkins.
He was born Feb. 24, 1958, in Morgantown. He was the youngest son of Charles and Rose Shinaberry of 1016 Montrose Ave. in Morgantown.
Surviving are his wife, Julie B. Shinaberry; his two sons, Quinn Malachi and Ryder Elijah Shinaberry of Route 2, Belington; his sister, Irene Harward of Cleveland, Ohio; his brother, Chuck Shinaberry of Goosecreek, S.C.; his dog, Jasmine; and the four cats, Scooter, Moon, Pumpkin and White Cat.
Hugh was a dedicated family man and employed with the Elkins Mountain School. He enjoyed helping others and loved his family and loved to ride his motorcycle. He had traveled world-wide and also had resided in Maui, Hawaii, for five years before meeting his true love, Julie. Hugh and Julie have lived a life only one can dream about or read about in a novel. They were together for 14 1/2 years. They were accepted into Tamarack in 1998 and have participated in many arts and crafts shows as well as some music festivals.
Hugh was also a cancer survivor of 2001, battling the most life-threating trial he had ever withstood.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m today at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on South High Street in Morgantown and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with services at 11:30 a.m. God bless and rest in peace, we love you, Hugh.  From 4 Oct 2005.

Dorothy Grace Shobe, 77, a resident of Petersburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va.
She was born Nov. 17, 1928, at Brushy Run, a daughter of Arlie O. Riggleman and Verna Lee Calhoun.
She was twice married. First to Joseph Fred Greenawait, who preceded her in death May 27, 1963. Second to William Lester Shobe, who preceded her in death Feb. 15, 1999.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra M. Barr and husband, Lawrence, of Petersburg; one sister, Ruth A. Kline of Arthur; two grandsons, Staff Sgt. Gary L. Minnich, stationed in Iraq, and wife, Johna, and James Minnich II and wife, Heather, of Petersburg; and three great-granddaughters, Patience and Kymberly Minnich and Hannah Secrist.

She was a bookkeeper for W.H. Vanmeter and Son from 1950 to 1958 and worked for Petersburg Oil Co. from 1958 to 1984. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Petersburg.

Beulah B. Shomo
Beulah B. Shomo, 94, a resident of West Lincoln Street in Buckhannon, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
She was born March 17, 1911, in Jackson County, a daughter of the late John Claudus Brammer and Carrie Wagner Brammer. On Dec. 24, 1931, she was united in marriage to David French Shomo, who preceded her in death April 25, 1982.
Surviving are one son, John R. and wife, Sylvia Shomo, of Brentwood, Tenn.; two grandsons, David D. Johnson of Eddington, Maine, and Michael L. Shomo of Franklin, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Dr. Donna Johnson Pumphrey of Bentonville, Ariz., Kelly Johnson Eqnitz of Ashland, Mass., and Renee Shomo Baca of Lilburn, Ga.; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Harold Brammer and Orville Brammer; and one sister, Irene Brammer.
She was a member of Business and Professional Women, United Methodist Women, Chapel Hill Choir, Farm Bureau, St. Joseph’s Auxiliary, Wesleyan College Club and was an avid bowler. Upshur County has lost a very special lady with the passing of Beulah Shomo. Beulah was known by her wonderful dedication to family, church and community. She was very active with community and church events and attended Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. Beulah loved her family and traveled with them whenever possible. She loved her church and loved to sing in the church choir. Beulah was recognized as a 50-year choir member, and was a teacher and an officer in the church for many years. Beulah was very active with the Business and Professional Women and was awarded the Pearl Jett BPW Spirit award for meeting and exceeding her obligations and consistently surpassing the expectations of her local organization. She also received the state BPW Key Award, and the local BPW Woman of the Year award in 2002. Beulah was a magistrate for Upshur County and served with dedication, fairness and compassion. Beulah’s hobbies during the last 50 years included bowling, writing and baking her famous Texas sheet cakes which were donated to various church and community organizations. Beulah was a wonderful friend and role model for many who knew her and will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Evelyn S. Shrader, 95, of Thomas, passed away Nov. 1, 2005, at Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.
She was born Feb. 2, 1910, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Dellett Monroe Gainer and Molly Matilda Burley Gainer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Vernon Shrader, Dec. 21, 1970.
Survivors include two sons, Charles R. and Carmen Shrader of Detroit, Mich. and Terry L. and Pamela Shrader of Petersburg; one daughter, Joanne V. and Robert Hart of Petersburg; two brothers, Bill Picard and Jim Picard, both of Bethel Park, Pa.; four sisters, Mary V. Stilley of Chapman, Betty E. Shultz and Margaret V. Yonish, both of Bethel Park, Pa. and Helen L. Trelnick of Library, Pa.; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Shrader was a cook at Thomas High School and Thomas Elementary School for many years. Mrs. Shrader was a lifelong member of Thomas United Methodist Church since 1930.

Herbert Shreve
Herbert “Lee” Shreve, 80, a lifelong resident of Mill Creek and a resident of Nella’s for the past seven years, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at 4:33 a.m., in Davis Memorial Hospital emergency room. He had been in failing health for the past several years; however, his condition deteriorated in the last month.
Born April 30, 1924, at Mill Creek, he was the son of the late Herbert and Nancy Currence Shreve.
On April 10, 1959, he was united in marriage to the former Doris Mae Robinson, who survives at Mill Creek.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Vicky L. McCune and companion, John Wamsley Jr., of Huttonsville; a son, Jeffery Shreve of Beverly; and a sister, Eliza Shreve. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Shawn Gwinn, Craig McCune, Autumn Shreve; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Lee had made his home with the late Clyde and Ethel Shreve until becoming a resident at Nella’s
Preceding him in death besides his parents were a daughter, Rebecca Ann Shreve; a sister, Ethel Woods Shreve; and two brothers, Wilson Shreve and James Woods.
Lee was last employed by Hayes Scott Rustic Fence as a post rail mill worker. He was formerly employed at Judy’s Fence Craft in Bartow. He attended Jerusalem United Methodist Church and he loved to go back to the church and listen to gospel singing. His favorite pastime was playing poker and spending time with his family and friends.
Lee never met a stranger in his entire life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and will remain in their hearts forever.
Friends will be received after 6 p.m. Saturday at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel at 1 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Kathryn J. Shure
Kathryn J. Shure, 67, of South Street, died Wednesday evening at Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center in Springfield, Vt.
She was born Nov. 24, 1937, in Bellows Falls, Vt., the daughter of Warren and Veronica Kane Tole.
She received her elementary education at St. Charles and graduated from Bellows Falls High School.
She was married to Donald “Zeke” Shure in August 1975 at St. Mary’ Catholic Church in Springfield.
Mrs. Shure was employed as a dispatcher for the Vermont State Police at Rockingham for 30 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Zeke, of Springfield; one son, Michael of Westminster, Mass.; two grandsons, one granddaughter and three nieces.
She was predeceased by one brother, Jack Tole, in 1972.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday evening at Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, Vt. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield, Vt. The Rev. Peter Williams, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Springfield.

Gonnie M. Siegel
Gonnie McClung Siegel, 77, died Sept. 29, 2005, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease at the Alterra Clare Bridge residence for the memory impaired in Gainesville, Fla., where she has lived for the last five years. Previously, she resided in Key Colony Beach in the Florida Keys and in the town of North Castle in Westchester County, N.Y.
She was born Thelma Gondoleen McClung, in 1928, in the Appalachian Mountain hamlet of Mt. Lookout. Her ancestors were among the earliest European settlers of western Virginia and also included Native Americans of the Mingo tribe. She later moved to Elkins where she attended Elkins High School and Davis & Elkins College. She received a degree in journalism from West Virginia University where she was an editor of the student daily newspaper.
She was the author of four books, including two career guides for women: “Sales: the Fast Track for Women” and “The Women’s Workbook.” She also wrote “How to Beat the High Cost of Learning,” a definitive guide to the federal Student Loan Program and “How to Advertise and Promote Your Small Business.” For many years, she ran her own public relations agency, Gonnie Siegel Associates, in Westchester, N.Y. She also was an accomplished artist. Early in her career, she worked in radio and was a news reporter for the Lorain (Ohio) Journal.
A lifelong feminist, she was deeply committed to the cause of equal rights for women. She was a founding member of the Westchester, N.Y., chapter of the National Organization for Women and its organizational meetings were held in her Bedford, N.Y., home.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert J. Siegel, a retired IBM communications executive and her brother and sister-in-law, Lake and Essie McClung, all of Gainesville, Fla. Also surviving are two sons, William Laird Siegel of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and Richard Joseph Siegel of Katonah, N.Y., together with daughter-in-law, Joan Siegel, and grandsons, Nicholas and Rory Siegel. Several nephews and nieces also survive her.
A sister, Verbena McClung Shaffer, of Bluefield, Va., predeceased her.
A memorial service is planned for early December at the old Bahia Honda Bridge in the Florida Keys. She had long expressed the wish that her ashes be spread onto the ocean at that site.   From 3 Oct 2005.

She was born Wednesday, April 19, 1916, at Ellamore, a daughter of the late Lee Silas Phillips and Grace Marguerite Smith Phillips.
She was married to Joseph Leo Siler, who preceded her in death, April 14, 2004. They had celebrated 67 years of marriage.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Richard Siler and wife, Margaret, of Elkins and Joseph Lee Siler and wife, Paula, of Parsons; four daughters, Patricia Cooper and husband, Curtis, of Elkins, Mary Jane Spencer and husband, Garry, of Napoleon, Ohio, Barbara K. Ingersoll and husband, Dan, of Baltimore, Md., and Joanne Kellogg of Severn, Md.; one brother, Delmos Paul Phillips and wife, Nancy, of Coraopolis, Pa.; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two brothers, Loyal and John Phillips; and two sisters, Rosalie Huff and Pearl Phillips.
Wanda was a graduate of Coalton High School and Davis Memorial Hospital School of Nursing with the class of 1969. She had worked at the former Wallace Bakery and as an licensed practical nurse at Davis Memorial Hospital for many years. She was an avid reader and cook and loved to attend her Pokeno Card Group.

Mr. Boyce Lee Simmons, 54, a resident of 110 1/2 S. Davis Ave., Elkins, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2005, at his home following a five-month battle with cancer.
He was born Jan. 13, 1951, in Elkins, a son of the late Woodrow and Eva Hamilton Simmons.
Surviving is a daughter, Stormy Ware of Coalton; a brother, Woodrow “Pooty” Simmons of Elkins; and four sisters, Nancy Keller and Marie Kennedy, both of Elkins, Anita Currence and husband, Todd, of Hutonsville and Louse Hart of Belington. A special friend, Reva McClellan, also survives.
Mr. Simmons was proud of his service with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Eagles Lodge of Elkins.

Charles E. Simmons
Charles Edward “Chuck” Simmons, 56, went to rest in His word, Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, in Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.
Chuck was born July 12, 1949, in Elkins, the son of the late Loren and Mary “Sis” Wiseman.
Chuck worked for many years with his family in the operation of L&L Bargain Room and in later years worked for Mt. State Memorial Gardens before moving to Kansas City in 1998 to work for Everest Communications. He loved horseback riding, family, singing and playing guitar. Chuck’s joyous and robust personality will be sadly missed.
On Nov. 12, 1966, he married Janet Sue Plum of Parsons, who preceded him in death Oct. 18, 2002.
Chuck leaves behind his second wife, Sherry Judson of Kansas City, Mo.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and wife, Tami, Scott and wife, Shirley and Robert “Bob” and wife, Audrey; nine precious grandchildren, Travis, Brandon, Brittany, Elizabeth Janet, Gerry Charles, Keenan, Ashley, Shannon and Michael; and two stepchildren, Michaela and Brenton. He will also be missed sadly by is brothers and sisters, Sheila Rice, Brenda Pritt and Loren, Gary and Kevin Wiseman, all of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews. Aunts and uncles mourning his loss are, Micki Bardoff of Los Angles, Calif., Phyllis Wagner of Baltimore, Md., Mac, Don and Rick George, all of Coalton and Jack and Gene George of Elkins; and a host of cousins and dear friends.

Clarence E. Simmons
Mr. Clarence E. “Bus” Simmons, 77, a resident of 1064 Harrison Ave., Elkins, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at his home.
He was born March 1, 1928, in Elkins, a son of the late Clarence “Jake” Simmons and the late Opal Reta Gawthrop Simmons.
Surviving are his former wife, Mary Margaret Rine; four daughters and spouses, Mary Margaret “Susie” Teel and husband, Fred, of Cross Lanes, Patricia Louise Chuck and husband, Jim, of Durham, N.C., Sheri Anne Pierson and husband, Lyndon, of Durham, N.C., and Jeannie Lynn Raese and husband, Johnny, of Elkins; six grandsons, Mark Carder, Justin Roberts, Jacob Carder, Wade Raese, Zachary Houger and Haden Raese; and two great-grandchildren, Megan and Jenna Carder.
Mr. Simmons served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 until 1947, serving on the commissioning crew of the Destroyer Leonard F. Mason. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asian Clasp and the China Service Medal. Following his return to the United States, he entered Davis & Elkins College where he graduated in May 1951 with a degree in business administration. He then accepted a position as general manager of the Dutch Oven Bakery in Elkins until it closed in 1971. He then worked as a tax examiner for the West Virginia State Tax Department, Business Tax and Auditing Section, retiring in 1988.
He was a lifetime member of Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars where he served as quartermaster for many years. He served as secretary of the Elkins Moose Lodge and was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion. He was a member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF & AM and the Osiris Shrine of Wheeling.
At the request of the deceased, his remains were cremated. The family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Tomblyn Funeral Home. A brief service of remembrance will follow at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, Eighth St. Erie, Pa., in memory of Mr. Simmons. Constance Kaye “Connie” Kiernan Simmons, 64, a former resident of Parsons and more recently a resident of Elkins, departed this life Monday morning, Feb. 14, 2005, at Davis Memorial Hospital emergency room. She had been in her usual health and death was attributed to cardiac arrest.
She was born Monday, June 10, 1940, at Clarksburg, a daughter of Bernard Patrick Kiernan, who survives at Elkins and Mildred M. Nye, who preceded her in death.
On March 11, 1961, at Red House, Md., she was married to Raymond Keith “Abe” Simmons, who preceded her in death Feb. 26, 1999.
Surviving are three daughters, Rhonda Sue Dye and husband, Doug, of Jacksonville, Fla., Brenda Kaye Cooper of Winter Springs, Fla., and Diana Lynn “Deedle” Hannah and husband, Gary, of Beverly; two grandchildren, Thomas “Tad” Allen Dye and Kayelynn Sue Cooper.
Preceding her in death was one son, Michael Keith Simmons.
She was a graduate of Victory High School of Clarksburg with the class of 1957. She was a homemaker and an employee of Wal-Mart for the past seven years.

Harold E. “Gene” Simmons, 58, of Marlinton, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at his home.
Gene was a residential contractor, a U.S. Army veteran and attended the First Assembly of God Church.
He was born at Harter Nov. 4, 1947, the son of the late James Clem and Jane Estelle Sharp Simmons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Mark Simmons, and one stepbrother, Ernest Wilfong.
He is survived by his wife, Dreama Grace Sharp Simmons; sons, Harold E. Margie Elizabeth Simmons, 98, of Painesville, Ohio, went to be with her Lord Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at Alter Care Nursing Home in Mentor, Ohio.
Mrs. Simmons was born April 13, 1906, at Bartow, the daughter of the late Samuel and Maude Barkley Spencer.
She was a member of Painesville Church of the Nazarene and one of the first and former members of Frank Nazarene Church. She was employed by the Painesville Township Board of Education. Her hobbies included gardening in her flower garden and crocheting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde R. Simmons, in 2001; and one son, Donald Neil Simmons.
Survivors are one daughter, Doris E. Gillispie and husband, Bob, of Temple Hills, Md.; one son, Zane Stanley Simmons and wife, Delores, of Cornville, Ariz.; two sisters, Marie Woodell of Sun City, Ariz., and Nellie Malcomb of Lakeland, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Ms. Phyllis R. Simmons, 71, a resident of 1362 Winter Green Way, Winter Garden, Fla., departed this life Tuesday morning, April 5, 2005, in Health Central Hospital in Ocoee, Fla. She had been in declining health for quite some time.
She was born Sept. 4, 1933, at Parsons, a daughter of the late David and Alice Fitzwater Simmons.
She had never married.
Surviving are three sisters, Loretta Harris of Salem, Va., Virginia Nogle of Warren, Ohio, and Lois Moore of Belington; a special niece, Kathy Thomas of Winter Garden, Fla., with whom she made her home; several nieces and nephews and several cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David Eugene and Edwin Simmons; and two sisters, Betty Thomas and Helena Simmons.
Ms. Simmons attended the Shockey School in Belington and then graduated from the Belington High School in the class of 1952. She was a member of AARP, and attended the Radiant Life Assembly of God in Orlando, Fla., and was employed by Wycliffe Bible Translators.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home in Belington Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Sharon Lee Carr Simmons, 62, a resident of Beverly, departed this life Saturday evening, June 18, 2005, at United Hospital Center at Clarksburg. She had been in failing health for several years.
She was born Thursday, Jan. 14, 1943, at Hendricks, a daughter of the late Donald Johnson and Betty Flynn Johnson. She was married to Verl O. Simmons Jr., who survives. They had celebrated 43 years of marriage.
Also surviving are one son, Donald B. Simmons of Beverly; one brother, Donald Johnson of Elkins; three sisters, Patty Simmons and Charlotte Corley, both of Elkins, and Roxanna Watson of Junior; three grandchildren, Malcolm Gabriel and Nathan David Simmons, both of Grantsville, Md., and Shane Bradley Simmons of Beverly.
Preceding her in death were two sons, Verl O. ‘Spike’ Simmons III and John H. Simmons.
She graduated from Parsons High School with the class of 1961 and had worked for the Huttonsville Correctional Center as a corrections officer for 15 years. She loved camping and traveling and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene at Elkins.
The family will receive friends at the First Church of the Nazarene Tuesday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted from the church Wednesday, June 22, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Terry A. Virgil Lee Simmons, 62, a resident of the Chenoweth Creek community, departed this life Friday evening, May 20, 2005, at the Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
He was born Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1942, at Bemis, a son of the late Samuel Austin Simmons and Dora Ann Kittle Simmons.
On Nov. 7, 1976, he was married to the former Linda J. Summerfield, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Daniel L. Simmons; two daughters, Heather R. Simmons of Elkins and Melissa Mangrum of Elkins; two brothers, James Simmons and wife, Jean, of Crystal River, Fla., and John Simmons of Harrisburg, Pa.; one sister, Elsie Nelson of Elkins; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were two brothers, Russell and Ralph Simmons; and two sisters, Kathleen Simmons Antline and Loretta "Betty" George.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School, and had worked for the West Virginia Department of Highways for 27 years, having retired in November 2004. He was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 24, at 1 p.m. at the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery. Pastor William Likens will officiate and interment will follow. Mary Agnes Simon, 79, a resident of Route 3, Philippi, passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, in Broaddus Hospital emergency room.
She was born July 13, 1925, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Otto and Edna Foster Thrasher.
She was united in marriage in October of 1943 to James W. Simon, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Loretta and Roger Anglin of Philippi; one son, Timothy W. Simon of Philippi; one sister, Eleanor Sell, of Philippi; two brothers, Donald Thrasher of Martinsburg and Arley Thrasher of Philippi; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Denver Thrasher; one infant daughter, Mary Louise Simon; and one son, James H. Simon.
She was a homemaker and a United Methodist by faith.

Melvin Gilbert Simons, 67, a resident of 89 Elm St., Buckhannon, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston due to complications of heart surgery.
He was born Oct. 5, 1937, in Upshur County, a son of the late Henry Gilbert Simons and Jessie Wagner Simons.
On Dec. 19, 1958, he was married to Patricia Ann Martin Simons, who survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are two sons, Brad Simons and wife, Val, of Centreville, Va., and Doug Simons of Lovettsville, Va.; two granddaughters, Korrie Simons of Centreville, Va., and Crystal Simons of Lovettsville, Va.; one brother, Robert Simons and wife, Mary K., of Beverly Hills, Mich.; two sisters, Faye Lewis of Canton, Ohio, and Luella Cvechko and husband, John, of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Simons Cutright.
He was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School with the class of 1950. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and West Virginia University. He was retired from Giant Foods of Virginia, and he attended Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Buckhannon.

Roxie Fae Simons, 90, a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center in Elkins, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at the center.
She was born April 26, 1914, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Warwick L. Karickhoff and Maggie Lantz Karickhoff.
On June 1, 1932, she was united in marriage to John Sherman Simons, who preceded her in death April 19, 1971.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Archer of Gatesville, N.C., and Donna Warnecke of Annapolis, Md.; three sons, John Sherman Simons Jr. of Niles, Ohio, Clinton Neale Simons of Volga and Ronald Joe Simons of Peel Tree; six sisters, Deloris Smith, Tula Curkendall and Oneita Powers, all of Volga, Virginia Keller of Harrisonburg, Va., Snow Dear Ward and Elsie Crider, both of Tavares, Fla.; one brother, Earl Karickhoff of Volga; five grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Edward Monzel Simons; one daughter, Loretta Simons; one sister, Audra Kincaid; one grandson, Vernon Lee Warnecka; and one great-granddaughter, Leah Jefferson.
She was a homemaker and attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Willa J. Simpson
Willa Jeanne Coberly Simpson, 83, a former resident of Amherst County, Virginia, and for the past 10 years a resident of Colonial Place, departed this life Friday evening, July 8, 2005, at Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department. She had been in declining health, but death was unexpected.
She was born Monday, March 27, 1922, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Levi Wade Coberly and Blanche Pfau Coberly.
On Aug. 5, 1959, she married Freeman Massie Simpson, who preceded her in death Oct. 16, 1991.
Surviving are one sister, Mary Louise Marquess and husband, Earl Lawrence, of Clarksburg; one nephew, Lawrence Wade Marquess and wife, Barbara Ann, of Denver, Colo.; three nieces, Linda Danges and husband, Kelly, of Reeders, Penn., Marsha Marquess of Durham, N.C., and Barbara Marquess of Marietta, Ohio; five grandnephews and four grandnieces.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband are two especially beloved aunts, Miss Dollie Coberly and Miss Iva Pfau.
Mrs. Simpson attended the schools of Elkins and was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1940. She served as an X-ray technician in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II. Following graduation from Davis & Elkins College with the class of 1948, she was employed by the Amherst County, Virginia Board of Education, was an active member of the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church and the Homemakers Extension Club. She was also a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins, the Chi Omega National Sorority and the Queen Esther Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
A memorial service for Mrs. Simpson will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Elkins Saturday, July 16, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Floyd Lee Sines, 54, a resident of 3052 Forget Me Not, Akron, Ohio, passed away at 7:52 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Hospice Care Center in Copley, Ohio.
He was born April 30, 1950, at Haure De Grace, Md., a son of the late Arlie Sines and Lilly Strader Sines.
He was married to Judy Cook Sines, who survives in Akron, Ohio.
Also surviving are two sons, Joshua Sines of Akron, Ohio and Thomas Cook and wife, Kristen, of Canton, Ohio; two daughters, Jessica Lee and husband, Lynn, of Georgia and Melissa Jones and husband, Matthew, of Doylestown, Ohio; three brothers, Frank Sines of Florida, Charles Sines of Maryland and Paul Sines of Virginia; three sisters, Helen Elliot and Rosemary Wright, both of Maryland and Ruth Anne Shreve of Tennessee; one grandson, Dallas Lee; and three granddaughters, Ellana Jones, Molly Jones and Taylor Cook.
He was a member of Eagles 555 and American Foundry Society. He was a big Browns fan and held season tickets.

Hallie “Hazel” Sines, 72, a resident of Academy Street in Buckhannon, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at her home.
She was born May 10, 1933, at Kanawha Head, a daughter of the late Orval Sines and Eliza Mae Humphrey Sines.
Surviving are three sons, Ray and wife, Kim Sines, of Buckhannon, Lee and wife, Alene Sines, of French Creek and Glen and wife, Stacey Sines, of Round Hill, Va.; one sister, Mary Cogar of Selbysville; two brothers, Hayes Isenhart of Spencer and John Howard of Holly Grove; and eight grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Betty Sines; one brother, James Howard; and one grandson, Jeremy Sines.
She was a homemaker.

Cheryl Ann Richards Singleton, 46, a resident of Mill Creek, departed this life at 2:35 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005, in Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins. She had been in failing health, but death was unexpected.
She was born Dec. 5, 1958, at Clarksburg, a daughter of Paul Richards Sr., who survives in Montrose, and the late Ruth Virginia Edgell Richards.
In addition to her father, she is survived by one son, Derrick Shawn Singleton of Philippi; one daughter, Shelly Dawn Boyce and husband, Richard, of Washington, Pa.; her stepmother, Kathleen Richards of Montrose; three sisters, Kathy Bryan of Huntington, Rhonda Davis of Montrose and Sheila Delauder of Belington; and one brother Paul Richards Jr. of Montrose. Also surviving are three nephews and two nieces.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by one nephew.
Cheryl was a graduate of Philip Barbour High School, was a homemaker and was a Protestant by faith.

Michael Stearn Sites, 74, of Upper Tract, died Friday, April 22, 2005, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 25, 1930, at Harrisonburg, Va., the son of the late Joseph E. Sites Jr. and Olivia Stearn Sites.
He was married to the former Nancy M. Mowery Sites, who survives at Upper Tract.
Also surviving are two daughters, Melissa Sites of Greenbelt, Md., and Michelle Sites of Harrisonburg, Va.; three sisters, Patricia Niswander of Monterey, Va., Sheila Garrick of Melborne, Fla., and Diana Alt of Rockville, Md.; and two brothers, Joseph E. Sites Jr. of Petersburg and James W. Sites of Harrisonburg, Va.; and one grandson, Jamie Rogers Sites, son of Melissa Sites and Ian Blackwell Rogers.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Olivia Delena Sites.
Mr. Sites was a farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1948 and attended Potomac State College for two years. He was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Franklin Presbyterian Church in Franklin with Dr. Richard O. Young officiating. The family will receive friends at the church at noon Tuesday following the memorial service. Julia Slaughter, 78, a resident of Buckhannon, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at Clarksburg Continuous Care.
She was born Oct. 1, 1926, at Midway, Ohio, the daughter of the late John and Delora Baumgartner Hudy.
She was married to Dane Slaughter, who died in 1992.
Surviving are one son, Roger A. Slaughter of Arlington, Texas; two grandchildren, Christie Ann Smith and Ryan Alan Slaughter; two sisters, Anna Cross of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Irene Guy of Cleveland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
She was a homemaker and member of Tennerton United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel. Lorraine Slaughter
Lorraine Virginia Slaughter, loving wife, mother and grandmother, 59, a resident of Route 6, Box 138, Buckhannon, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Crestview Manor in Jane Lew.
She was born March 7, 1945, at Lorentz, a daughter of Rachel Whisner Paugh Butcher of Jane Lew and the late Quill Paugh.
On Jan. 20, 1962, she was united in marriage to Fay Slaughter, who survives.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by one son, Fay W. Slaughter and wife Caroline, of Martinsburg; two daughters, Rachella Curtis and Rick Ramage of Morgantown and Becky Slaughter of Weston; five granddaughters, Kim Slaughter and Niki Slaughter, both of Martinsburg, Tiffany Curtis and Cassandra Curtis, both of Morgantown, and Samantha Hollen of Weston; five brothers, Calvin Paugh, Ronnie Paugh of North Carolina, Paul Paugh of Clarksburg, Ricky Paugh of Shinnston and James Paugh of Buckhannon; four sisters, Jean Roth of Valley Chapel, Mona Mackey of Buckhannon, Patty Paugh of Charleston and Joyce Wilson of Chicago, Ill.; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Matthew Curtis, and three brothers, Richard Paugh, Loman Paugh and Kenneth Paugh.
She was a United Methodist minister serving on Wilsontown Charge, Booth Union and Salem Charge. She was a member of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Buckhannon. She was very active in the community and in helping the youth. She was director of Christian education for Wesley United Methodist Church in Morgantown and director of Youth Services Beckley Child Care Center.
Friends will be received today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Poling-St. Clair. Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jobert Lee “Buck” Slayton, 56, of Arbovale, passed away Friday, April 29, 2005, at Davis Memorial Hospital.

Evelyn L. Smallridge
Mrs. Evelyn L. Smallridge, 83, of Charleston, died of a sudden illness while visiting her daughter Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben. They were joined in marriage Dec. 24, 1938, and she was reunited with her husband on their 67th anniversary.
She was a 50-year member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, where she was very active in the kitchen and served on various boards during that time.
She is survived by one daughter, Belinda and her husband, John Hoagland, of Douglassville, Pa., formerly of Roanoke, Va; a beloved granddaughter, Lindsey Hoagland of Philadelphia, Pa., treasured aunts and uncles from Glenmont, Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Wanda Lane of Charleston and her daughters, Karen Thorne and Janet Young. She also leaves behind a group of ladies from the church, whom she loved very much, known as the “Lunch Bunch.”
Those who knew her will fondly remember her love of her family, her warmth, humility and Christian character. She considered herself blessed by a good life and will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at Bartlett Burdette Cox Funeral Home in Charleston with the Rev. Ron Stoner officiating. Denzle E. Smith
Denzle E. Smith, 77, a resident of Buckhannon, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born Nov. 12, 1927, at Adrian, a son of the late Harvey Low Smith and Stacie M. Tenney Smith.
On April 13, 1962, he was married to Rena Lane Smith, who preceded him in death Oct. 18, 2005.
He is survived by one brother, Doyle and wife, Karen Smith, of Rootstown, Ohio; two sisters, Sada Gould of Buckhannon and Vada and husband, Tom Ralston, of Rootstown, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman Smith and Darris Smith; and one sister, Velma Godrey.
He was a farmer, a member of Upshur County Farm Bureau and a lifetime member of French Creek Chapter 36 Disabled American Veterans.

Edgar A. Smith
Edgar Allen Smith, 79, a resident of 206 Sixth St. in Belington, departed this life 12:31 a.m. Friday. Dec. 31, 2004, at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
He was born Nov. 15, 1925, at Circleville, a son of the late John Calvin and Myrtle Kline Smith.
On May 29, 1960, he was united in marriage to the former Sue Bartlett, who survives at their home in Belington.
He is also survived by two brothers, John Calvin Smith of Circleville and Dixie Roy Smith of Lutz of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers.
After attending Circleville High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres of World War II aboard the USS Leland E. Thomas DE 420, until his discharge in 1945. He then studied at the Morgan Technical School of Horology in Cumberland, Md., and then was employed by the Mongelli Watch Repair Co. in Washington, D.C. He then began work at General Motors in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1952 as an apprentice tool and die maker, which led to him becoming a tool and die maker journeyman. He later transferred to the Lordstown Fisher Body Plant and retired after a total of 30 years of service. He was a member of the Belington Presbyterian Church and a member of the Lake Erie Masonic Lodge AF and AM and the Lake Erie Consistory, 32nd degree Mason.
Friends were received on Sunday at the Talbott Funeral Home in Belington. Services were conducted from the funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Dan Unger officiating. Interment followed in the Concord Cemetery where the presentation of the American flag was conducted by the American Legion Post 44 of Philippi. The family asks that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of contributions in Mr. Smith’s name to the Belington Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 5, Belington, W.Va. 26250. Franklin Junior Smith, 67, of River Road, Junior, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, in Barbour County Good Samaritan Center following an extended illness.
He was born July 9, 1938, at Belington, a son of the late John L. Sullivan Smith and the late Maxine Dessie Poling Smith.
On Oct. 10, 1961, he married the former Betty Lee Phillips, who survives at River Road in Junior.
Also surviving are a son, Franklin Matthew Smith, at home; four daughters, LaNae Rae Swick, Cheryl Ann “Sherri” (Ronald) Waugaman and Patty LeRae (Frank “Bub”) Snyder, all of Junior and Heather Lee Dawn (Randall) McCartney of Philippi; grandchildren, Jennifer McPherson, Emily and Sarah Snyder, Logan Waugaman and Jordan Swick; aunts, Laura Lowe of Nutter Fort, Marie Morrison and Rachel O’Brien, both of Belington; special friends, Alva “Buck” Riffle, Gary Allen Miller and Melvin “Bud” Lee.
He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Michael Steven “Budgie” Swick.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a former coal miner and woodsman. He was an avid hunter, farmer and “coon hunter.” He also enjoyed repairing and painting cars.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel in Belington. The Rev. Doyle N. Rider and the Rev. F.L. “Wink” McQuain will officiate. Honoring Mr. Smith’s wishes, his remains will then be cremated.

James L. Smith, 80, a former resident of Gateway Apartments, passed away Monday, July 25, 2005, at Nella’s Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for the past year.

James L. Smith
James L. Smith, 80, a former resident of Gateway Apartments, passed away Monday, July 25, 2005, at Nella’s Nursing Home where he had been a resident for the past year.
Born July 5, 1925, in Norton, he was the son of the late Thomas W. and Alice M. Smith.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence K. Smith and Walter Phillips; and two sisters, Freda M. Smith and Eula R. Smith.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
James was previously employed by Junior Mercantile Company Store as a driller. James had also worked for several local mines in this area that are now closed. James was generous in spirit, he liked to dance at the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. James regularly attended the Elkins Church of God and took care of his mother in her final years. James will be sadly missed by those who knew him.

Jo Ann Conrad Smith, 63, a resident of Route 9, Buckhannon, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
She was born Feb. 11, 1942, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Richard Lorentz Conrad and Otsie Aegan Conrad.
On June 7, 1980, she was married to Loyle T. Smith, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Donald Miller and William James Miller, both of Buckhannon and Scott Alan Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Donna Demastes of French Creek and Rebecca Ann Tenney of Buckhannon; one sister, Sandra Smith of Buckhannon; one half brother, Bobby Goodwin of Amhurst, Ohio; two half sisters, Ruthie McNair of Lochbuie, Colo., and Kathy Yellow Eagle of Grantspass, Ore.; five grandsons, Donald Earl Miller III of Akron, Ohio, Thomas James Miller of Buckhannon, Jacob Scott Hunt of French Creek, Joshua Ward and Shane Alan Workman, both of Buckhannon; four granddaughters, Rebecca Dawn Miller of Akron, Ohio, Joanna Jean Hunt of Keyser, Amanda Joada Ward and Gabrielle Miller, both of Buckhannon; one great-granddaughter, Alexxis Harris of Keyser; and one special niece, Natasha Smith of Buckhannon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, John Michael Miller and Paul Miller; one daughter, Cathy Miller; one half sister, Geraldine Hollingsworth; one half brother, Junior Goodwin; her stepfather, William “Bill” Post; and one granddaughter, Christie Lynn White.
She was a homemaker.

Lora “Maggie” Smith, 77, of Lumberport, died at 11:33 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.
She was born April 30, 1928, at Harman, a daughter of the late Harness and Elizabeth Pennington Nelson.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn H. Smith, whom she married June 26, 1974; one son, Bob Smith and wife, Sue, of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Judy Inscore and husband, Earl, of Tunnelton and Bonnie Jean Cain of Clarksville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, David Nelson and wife, Shirley, of Elkins and Junior Nelson and wife, Pearl, of Volga.
She was preceded in death by three grandchildren; and one brother.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and was a member of Ten Mile Baptist Church.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Perine Funeral Home on Route 19 south of Shinnston. Nora Virginia Shipman Smith, 88, a resident of the Galdy Fork community, Buckhannon, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at her home.
She was born Sept. 12, 1916, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late William Lewis Dowell and Bessie Jane Corathers Dowell.
Surviving are one son, Joseph W. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Reed Shipman; her second husband, Brenard G. Smith; two brothers, Myers Dowel and wife, Opal, and Page Dowell and wife, Lillian; two sisters-in-law, Geneva Dowell and Audra Dowell; one brother-in-law, Robert Sowder; one great-niece, Rhonda Shipley; and one great-nephew, Michael Ashley.
She was a sales clerk at G.C. Murphy Co. and attended the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. She was a member of Reger Chapel United Methodist Women, Brushy Fork Extension Homemaker Community Education Outreach Services and Veterans of Foreign Wars 3663 Ladies Auxiliary.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Orsis R. Smith
Orsis Ray Smith, 91, a resident of Youngstown, Ohio, for the past 50 years, died at 10:50 p.m. on May 11, 2005.
He was born May 2, 1914, in Volga, a son of the late Elsworth and Emma (Morrison) Smith.
Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Vaughnee Marteney, who preceded him in death Aug. 15, 1996, for 60 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Joan Davis and husband, Bill, of Youngstown, Ohio, and Martha Jean Sheppard and companion, Robert Mays, of Charlotte, N.C.; and one son, Richard Dale Smith and wife, Jeri, of Volga. Also surviving is 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. He retired from Plexco in 1984. Mr. Smith was a Baptist by faith.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until 9 a.m., the service hour, Monday, with the Rev. Ray W. Smith
Ray Willard Smith, 71, a resident of Hendricks, departed this life Tuesday evening, May 10, 2005, at Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to congestive heart failure.
He was born Wednesday, May 2, 1934, at Junior, a son of the late Bradford Ray Smith and Beulah Goldie Glendening.
He was twice married. First to Floda Ellen Arnold Antine of Maryland and second to the former Ellouise Humphreys Murray, who survives.
He is survived by four sons, Willard Junior Smith of Pennsylvania, Danny Joe smith and Michael Lynn Smith, both of Maryland, and Kenneth Ray Smith of Hambleton; five daughters, Teresa Arnold, Willette Smith and Mellisa Smith, all of Maryland, and Sharon Rae Heckler and Patricia Guido, both of Hambleton; five stepdaughters; three brothers, Bradford Smith and Charles Smith, both of Moatsville, and Phillip “Hop” Smith of Philippi; two half brothers; three sisters, Josephine Collins of Thomas, Juanita Moats of Berryburg and RosaLee Lawson of Maryland; two half sisters; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one half brother, Donald Smith; and one sister, Phyllis Smith.
He attended the schools of Barbour County. At the time of his death, he was a city councilman of Hendricks. He was an avid outdoorsman.

Rena L. Smith
Rena Lane Smith, 81, a resident of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
She was born Feb. 5, 1924, at Glady Fork, a daughter of the late Worthy Strader Lane and Nola Virginia Hornbeck Lane.
On April 13, 1962, she was united in marriage to Denzil Smith, who survives at Buckhannon.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews; a special friend and caregiver, Patricia A. Perrine of Buckhannon; and a sister-in-law, Sada Gould of Buckhannon.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Everett J. Lane and Clark B. Lane; and two sisters, Ruth Westfall and Ruby McDannels.
She was a homemaker and attended Christian Fellowship Church. She was a member of Upshur County Farm Bureau, French Creek Chapter 36 Disable American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the church choir.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. J. Edward McDaniels and the Rev. William M. Smith
William M. “Bill” Smith, 68, a resident of Lavalette Ave., Elkins, passed away at 8:40 a.m. Friday, April 1, 2005, in the emergency department of the Davis Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
He was born Wednesday, April 22, 1936, at Harrisonburg, Va., a son of the late Mike Smith and Darrie Warner Smith.
He was married to the former Charlene Cave, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Robert “Bob” Smith and wife, Vicki, of Elkins, Ricky Smith, at home, and James “Randy” Smith and wife, Stacy of Valley Bend; and a daughter, Jeanette Hubbard and husband, Dave, of Elkins. One brother, Arnold Smith of Novi, Mich., five granddaughters, one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter also survive.
Mr. Smith attended the schools of Pendleton and Randolph counties. He was an auto mechanic by trade and classified as an A-One Mechanic. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 557 at Baltimore, Md., having worked for Anchor Motor Freight in Baltimore for 26 years until his retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their son, Randy, owned and operated Smith Auto Sales and Service in Elkins until Mr. Smith’s health forced its closing. He was a Methodist by faith and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

William M. Smith

Wilma R. Smith
Wilma Rose Cochran Smith, 81, a resident of Route 3, Elkins, departed this life Friday evening, July 1, 2005, at Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health.
She was born Wednesday, Oct. 17, 1923, at Reader, a daughter of the late Charles Ross Cochran and Luti Blanche Phillips Cochran.
On Nov. 25, 1945, she was married to Robert Lenval Smith, who preceded her in death April 12, 1988.
Surviving are one son, Kevin Mark Smith and wife, Patricia Ann, of Elkins; four daughters, Mary Frances Haymond and husband, the late Harold Ross, Julia Glaspell and husband, Jackson Lynn, Barbara Elizabeth Abbott and husband, Frank, and Robin Lynne Lane and husband, Bennie Michael, all of Elkins; one sister, Joretta Frances Westfall and husband, Harold Donald, and their children, Jeff and Cindy, all of Clarksburg; 10 grandchildren, Holly Ball, Joe Warder, Annette Sines, Beth Wilfong, Shawn Glaspell, Chad Vest, Russell D. Smith, Rebecca Smith, Jason Lane and Brandi Marie Smith; and eight great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were one son, Samuel James Smith, and one daughter, Debra Lea Smith.
She was a graduate of Washington Irving High School at Clarksburg with the class of 1942, was a former employee of Montgomery Wards, Stone & Thomas and Peebles, and from 1999 until the time of her death, was the owner of J.J.’s Hairstyling. She was a member of the Delphia Rebekah Lodge 62, the White Shrine of Jerusalem and was a life member of the Belington Chapter 68, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the First Church of Christ.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Terry Lynn Snider, 52, of Weston and formerly of Barbour County, died unexpectedly in her home Friday, April 1, 2005.
She was born Feb. 7, 1953, in Philippi, a daughter of the late Roy Eugene Snider and Merlene Elizabeth Jones Snider.
Ms. Snider is survived by her four children, John Graham II of Junior, Dennis Graham and wife, Tara Mitchell, of Arden, DeAnna Graham of Frederick, Md., and Tara Graham of Philippi; nine grandchildren, Adam and John Graham III, Shay Mitchell, Jayden and Adryan Graham, Tyler Miller and Ryan, Noah and Brielle Graham; and one granddaughter, expected in May, Addison Marie Fritz; three sisters, Janice Campanaro of Gaithersburg, Md., Karen Lobb of Boydton, Va., and Jean Bulka of Weston; two brothers, Timothy L. Snider of Lost Creek and Matthew Snider of Philippi; and her stepmother, Betty Snider of Philippi.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Snider, Monte Snider and Lloyd Snider; and one niece, Crystal Ryan Bulka.
At the request of the deceased, her remains were cremated. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at Union Church of Christ in Philippi with the Rev. R.D. Ice officiating.  From 5 Apr 2005.

Eulah Anita Snyder, 89, a resident of Clarksburg Road, Buckhannon, died Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Holbrook Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
She was born Sept. 26, 1915, at Revere, a daughter of the late Roscoe and Mary Etta Lydick Wilt.
She was married to Stanley J. Snyder, who preceded her in death Feb. 19, 1990.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Armentrout and husband, Henry, of Buckhannon; one grandson, Jeffrey Armentrout of Ansted; one granddaughter, Khristi McCutcheon and husband, Mark, of Harrisville; and two great-granddaughters, Kaylea and Eliana McCutcheon.
She was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
She was a graduate of Tanner High School in Tanner. She was a homemaker and child-care giver, a former member and past president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663 Ladies Auxiliary and associated with Liberty Baptist Church of Buckhannon.

Jessie M. Snyder
Jessie M. Thompson Snyder, 81, a resident of Harman, passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 14, 2005, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 12, 1924, at Tract Mountain in Pendleton County, a daughter of the late George Otis Thompson and Bessie Alice Hartman Thompson.
On July 27, 1940, she was married to John Harold Snyder who preceded her in death April 15, 1984.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Neil (Marlene) Ours of Harman and Mrs. Terry (Rosalind) Wyatt of Elkins; one brother, Paul Junior “Chap” Thompson of Franklin; and three sisters, Donna Alice Thompson Landes Casidy and Tressie Jane Thompson Bridges, both of Bridgewater, Va., and Viola Arvelda Thompson Hevener of Harrisonburg, Va. Three grandchildren, Mrs. Darryl (Stephanie) Roy of Harman, Mrs. Neal (Kim) Paugh of Elkins and J.W. Wyatt and wife, Julie, of Bowden; five great grandchildren; Ethan and Heath Roy, Jessica Corrick, Hillary and Garret Paugh; and several nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
Preceding her in death were eight brothers, Raymond Howard “Pete” Thompson, William Denver “Den” Thompson, Ona Glenn Thompson, George Hansel Thompson, Ray Otis “Coy” Thompson, Charles Clarence “Pum” Thompson, Arlie Edwin “Boss” Thompson and Oden Lee “Son” Thompson; and three sisters, Reda Mae Thompson Gauding, Nettie Florence Thompson Alt and Anna Louise “Granny” Thompson Hedrick.
Mrs. Snyder had worked for more than 20 years with Canaan Valley Resorts prior to her retirement. She was a member of Job Church of God.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home at Elkins. Ronald L. Solomon
Ronald Lee Solomon, 65, of Philippi, formerly of Wheeling, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born Nov. 28, 1939, in Natrona Heights, Pa., the son of the late Ellen Hauck Solomon and William L. Solomon.
Ron’s banking career spanned more than 47 years, the last four as chief executive officer of the BC Bank in Philippi. Before coming to Barbour County, he served 22 years as president and CEO of Progressive Bank of Wheeling. For 21 years before that, he served with the Keystone Bank of Lower Burrell, Pa., leaving this position in 1978 as senior vice president. Ron was named the 2004 Banker of the Year by the West Virginia Bankers Association.
He attended Penn State University and the Rutgers University Graduate School of Banking. He also completed courses at the American Institute of Banking. Ron was a former member and chairman of the West Virginia Bankers Association board of directors and member of the WVBA’s Strategic Planning and Nominating committees. He also served as a member of the Nominating Committee of the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond, Va., the Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Community Bankers Council and Advisory Council of the American Bankers Association. He most recently served as a member of the Legislative Committee for the West Virginia Bankers Association and as West Virginia State Membership chairman.
Ron has given of his time and talent in a voluntary capacity with many local organizations including, treasurer and member of the board of trustees of Alderson-Broaddus College, treasurer of Barbour County Economic Development Corp., treasurer of Philippi Baptist Church, vice president of the Kiwanis Club of Philippi and past president of Barbour County Chamber of Commerce.
He has been a guiding light on the Alderson-Broaddus board of trustees, serving on numerous committees and lending his banking expertise to firming up the college’s bottom line. He was a key contributor to the Renewing the Promise Campaign and has given generously of his own financial resources, provided leadership on the board of trustees Campaign Committee and linked the college with major gift prospects.
His involvement with other West Virginia organizations included treasurer of the West Virginia Baptist Convention, past Chamber of the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce and served in numerous other capacities in community and church organizations during his tenure in Wheeling. He was a member of the Bigelow Lodge 52 AF & AM, a member of the Osiris Shrine of Wheeling, the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry in Wheeling and the Royal Order of Jesters in Wheeling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Borland.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Hudson Solomon; his children and grandchildren, Kathryn Solomon of Wheeling, Bob Hannah and his wife, Kathy, of Rivesville, Scott Solomon, his wife, Diane, and their children, Skylar and Sydney, of Manassas, Va., Keith Solomon, his wife, Cortney, of Jackson, Ohio, and their son, Devin, Jerry Soloman and his sons, David and JP, all of Tiltonsville, Ohio, and their mother, Deborah Solomon; and three brothers, Robert Solomon and his wife, Shirley, of Advance, N.C., Richard Solomon and his wife, Emmy, of Daytona Beach, Fla. and William Solomon Jr. and his wife, Marie, of Sarver, Pa.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, in Wheeling at the First Baptist Church, 1470 National Road, with the Rev. Darrin Wright, the Rev. Robin Crouch and the Rev. Robert J. Romick officiating. A luncheon will follow the service to allow those attending a time to visit with the family. On Sunday, June 5, a service will be held at the Philippi Baptist Church in Philippi at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Dean Davidson officiating, followed by a time of food and fellowship. Ruth M. Sommerville, 95, of 530 Union St., Webster Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, at Webster Springs Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
She was born Sunday, May 8, 1910, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late M.W. Moore and Mary Jane Digman Moore.
She was married to the late A. L. Sommerville Sr.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Margaret Sommerville; one son, A.L. (Barbara) Sommerville Jr. of Webster Springs; one brother, Joseph Charles Moore of Bradenton, Fla.; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jerry) Cutlip of Paden City and Jan (Mike) Smith of Hurricane; great-grandchildren, Milisa Cutlip, Amie Cutlip, Hilary Cutlip, Megan Cutlip and Jacob Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, one nephew and one niece.
She was a secretary at Webster Springs High School and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Webster Springs. She was the oldest living member of the Webster Springs Woman’s Club, a member of United Methodist Women and St. Anne Ladies Guild. She had been a resident of Webster County since 1936. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister, and was beloved by all.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the funeral home with the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon, Fr. Virginia Lee Spanitz, 84, a resident of Cole Avenue, Elkins, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday evening at her home.
She was born Oct. 16, 1930, at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Burns Leonard Marteney and Bertha Scott Marteney.
In 1943, she was married to Martin Matthew Spanitz, who survives.
Also surviving is one son, Charles M. Spanitz, and wife, Vonda M., of Elkins.
She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
She was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School. She was a homemaker, a member of American Legion Post 29 Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Randolph County Senior Center and a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Guy R. Spaulding, 46, of Bunker Hill, died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at his home.
Born Oct. 28, 1958, in Alaska, he is the son of Elizabeth Emmons Spaulding of Martinsburg and the late Russell L. Spaulding.
He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School with the class of 1976.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda Hallenbeck Spaulding; two daughters, Tracy Spaulding of Ashburn, Va., and Jennifer White of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Ryan and Sophia; two brothers, Michael L. Spaulding of Nebraska and Samuel E. Spaulding of Fayetteville, N.C.; and two sisters, Joanne M. Woolwine of Elkins and Trudy E. Clopton of Martinsburg.

Russell L. Spaulding
Russell L. Spaulding, 75, of Martinsburg, passed away Wednesday Feb. 9, 2005, at his home.
Born Feb. 8, 1930, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Guy and Fannie Marie McCauley Spaulding.
Russell faithfully served his country before retiring from the U.S. Air Force. He later retired as a district manager for Nationwide Insurance. He was a member of Winchester Avenue Christian Church.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Elizabeth Emmons Spaulding; three sons, Michael L. Spaulding of Hill, Utah, Guy R. Spaulding of Bunker Hill and Samuel E. Spaulding of Fayetteville, N.C.; two daughters, Joanne M. Woolwine of Elkins and Trudy E. Clopton of Martinsburg; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rosedale Funeral Home Chapel in Martinsburg with the Rev. Curtis Wheeler officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Martinsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard and U.S. Air Force.

Isabel T. Spiggle
Isabel Twigg Spiggle, 97, of Davis, died March 4, 2005, at her home after a short illness.
She was born July 25, 1907, in Davis, a daughter of the late George Harry and Bessie Belle Twigg Eshelman.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wayne C. Spiggle; one stepson, David Spiggle; one sister, Mary Eshelman; and one granddaughter, Mary Lenora Lynn Spiggle.
Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Eshelman and Ruth E. Edwards, both of Davis; her niece, Betsy Edwards of Davis; one son, George Allen Spiggle and wife, Nancy, of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one stepson, Dr. Wayne C. Spiggle and wife, Betty, of Short Gap; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Spiggle graduated from Shepardstown College and taught at Canaan Valley and Davis schools. After her marriage to Wayne C. Spiggle, she assisted him in the management of The Spiggle Funeral Home, now Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis. She was a member of Davis United Methodist Church.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Funeral services were held today at 11 a.m. at Davis United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Martin officiating. Agnes Virginia Bates Sponaugle, 83, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Monday evening, Feb. 14, 2005, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.

She was twice married, first to Lawrence Bates, who preceded her in death. On March 14, 1978, at Oakland, Md., she was married to Ward Sponaugle, who survives at Parsons.
Surviving are six sons, James “Jimmy” Bates and wife, Barbara, of St. Louis, Mo., Richard “Dick” Bates and wife, Barbara, of New Jersey, Howard “Tubby” Bates and wife, Bobbie, of Windsor, Va., Larry Bates and wife, Linda, of Hambleton, Dennis Bates and wife, Brenda, of Passadena, Md. and Jack Bates and wife, Paula, of Parsons; one daughter, Nancy Louise Pennington and husband, Clyde, of North Canton, Ohio; one brother, Robert Cross of Blackman Flats, Parsons; one sister, Jenny Wade of Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were two brothers, Paul “Bud” Lewis Cross and Ralph Cross; and three sisters, Ethel Taylor, Helen Cross and Kathleen Housberry.
She attended the schools of Tucker County. She was an employee of the former Tucker County Hospital at Parsons. She attended the Church of God at St. George. She was a quilt maker, loved flowers and puzzles.

Eva Elizabeth Sponaugle, 84, a resident of Circleville, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, in Grant Memorial Hospital at Petersburg.
She was born Sept. 7, 1920, at Upper Timber Ridge, the daughter of the late Isaac Dice Vint and Esta Maude Nelson.
She was married to Coy Sponaugle, who preceded her in death Sept. 29, 2001.
She is survived by one son, Oliver Sponaugle of Circleville, and one grandson, Glenn Sponaugle of Franklin.
Also preceding her in death were one brother, Eston Guy Vint, and one sister, Delphia Bennett.
She was a homemaker and member of Circleville United Methodist Church.

Earl H. Stalnaker
Earl Henson Stalnaker, 84, a resident of 1732 South Davis Avenue, Elkins, departed this life Friday, May 27, 2005, at his residence. Death was unexpected.
He was born Tuesday, June 22, 1920, at Stalnaker Run, a son of the late James Garfield Stalnaker and Inez Marie Duckworth Stalnaker.
On July 27, 1941, at Belington, he was married to the former Velta Ruth Perry, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Philip Errol Stalnaker and his wife, Constance Maria, of Bridgeport; two sisters, Kate Sayre of Elkins and Rose Meadows of Mulberry, Fla.; two grandchildren, Paul Scott Stalnaker of Rocky Mount, N.C. and Michelle Beth Stalnaker of Bridgeport.
Preceding him in death besides his parents are an infant son; six brothers, Elmer, Dick, Ray, Garfield, Irvin and Harold Stalnaker; and one sister, Emma Stalnaker VanNatta.
Mr. Stalnaker attended the schools of Randolph County and served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War ll. He retired as an X-Ray technician at 82 with more than 50 years service with the former Memorial General Hospital, Davis Memorial Hospital and in the private practice of Dr. Stephen Lester, was a 14-year member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, was a member of Elkins Lodge 1135 BPOE and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins.
He enjoyed golfing, was a devoted husband who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and, when his son was growing up, often entertained the neighborhood by showing 16mm films in his backyard.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Wednesday, June 1, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Edith Jane Stalnaker, 95, of Stewart Run Road, Philippi, passed away at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2005, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 28, 1909, at Indian Fork in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Charles Ray and Leah Cutlip Sigley.
She was united in marriage on Oct. 23, 1938, to A. Lawrence Stalnaker, who preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1983.
She is survived by one son, Charles C. Stalnaker and wife, Denise, of Weston; one grandson, Frank L. Stalnaker and wife, Sandra, of Roanoke, Va.; one granddaughter, Rebecca A. Stalnaker of Horner; one great-granddaughter, Savannah L. Stalnaker; one sister, Ruth Martin of Atlanta, Ga.; and four nieces and five nephews.
Edith was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Sigley, and one sister Juanita Crouse.
She was a graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College with a bachelor of arts degree in education and was an elementary teacher in Barbour County Schools for 34 years.
She was a member of the Elk City United Methodist Church for 81 years, held numerous offices and taught Sunday school from 16 years of age. She was also a charter member of the United Methodist Women’s Society, West Virginia Retired Teacher’s Association, 4-H All Stars, West Virginia Farm Bureau, Barbour County Senior Citizens Center, Shooks Run CEOS and the Dorcas Rebekah Lodge 275.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 North Walnut Street, Philippi, on Sunday, May 22, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a memorial service conducted at 7:30 p.m. by the Dorcas Rebekah Lodge 275 and on Monday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the service hour. G. Nadine Stalnaker, 83, a resident of St. Joseph Hospital Long Term Care and a former resident of Route 3, Philippi, passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, in the St. Joseph Hospital.
She was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Arden, a daughter of the late William A. and Oofta A. Allen Godwin. She was united in marriage April 18, 1944, to Winford W. Stalnaker, who preceded her in death in July 2000.
Surviving are one daughter, Darlene Stalnaker of Belington; two sons, David W. and wife, Karen E. Stalnaker, of Elkins and Donovan C. and wife, Sandra J. Stalnaker, of Philippi; one sister, Veda Ching of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Mrs. Stalnaker was a homemaker and attended the Arden United Methodist Church.

Ruth A. Stalnaker
Ruth Allene Stalnaker, 83, entered into eternal rest with our Heavenly Father surrounded by her loved ones at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at the home of her daughter.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She had a precious caring spirit, exhibited in the warm, non-wavering love she gave to her Heavenly Father, family and friends. Ruth was a talented homemaker, full of great hospitality, generosity and kindness. She will be sorely missed by all whose lives she touched.
She was born Jan. 6, 1922, at Red Creek, a daughter of the late Alvin John Sponaugle and the late Dessie Hedrick Sponaugle.
In 1938 at Oakland, Md., she was married to James Richard Stalnaker, who preceded her in death Aug. 15, 1994. Mr. Stalnaker served as captain of the Elkins Police Department for 27 years.
Surviving are two sons, Fonso O. Stalnaker and wife, Karen, of Fairmont and James T. Stalnaker and wife, Carolyn, of Elkins; a daughter, Debra Madonna Stalnaker Riddlebarger of Elkins; three brothers, John Freeman Sponaugle, Paul William Sponaugle and Berlin “Bud” Sponaugle, all of Parsons. Four sisters, Evelyn Parsons of Canton, Ohio, Lorraine Hedrick and Abbie Youngblood, both of Hendricks, and Louise Rutherford of Ronceverte; six grandchildren, Brad Stalnaker, Bill Stalnaker, Todd Stalnaker, Angie Wilson, Sam Loria and Steven Austin; and five great-grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Stalnaker was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elkins and attended Destiny Tabernacle of Praise in Elkins.

Lovie Dell Starcher, 88, a resident of Wishing Well Manor in Fairmont, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, in Fairmont General Hospital.
She was born April 16, 1917, at Naiper, a daughter of the late John Stanton Allen and Ellen Murphy Allen.
On June 25, 1940, she was married to Roscoe Max Starcher, who preceded her in death June 17, 1977.
Surviving are one son, Randy Max Starcher of Bridgeport; one daughter, Oletha Nicholson of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Mildred Brown of Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Allen, Harry Allen, Cecil Allen and Russell Allen; and one sister, Amy LeFever.
She was a homemaker and attended Calvary Baptist Church.

Starkey Sr. and wife, Florence, of Buckhannon; stepgrandmother, Mamie Starkey of Buckhannon; three nieces, three nephews and several aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Glendle and Nellie Roby; his paternal grandparents, Clifton and Josephine Starkey Sr.; and one nephew.
He was a supervisor for J&O Plastics.

Robert L. Starkey, 77, a resident of Elkins, died Saturday, July 2, 2005, at Davis Memorial Hospital. Robert had been in declining health for the past four months.

Armentrout and Casey Kimble; and two nieces and one nephew.
In addition to his parents, a brother, James A. Starkey, preceded Robert in death.
Robert retired from the National Maritime Merchant Marines after 48 years of service. He served with the U.S. Army, was an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 3647 and American Legion Post 29.
Robert donated his body to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University Hospital and a memorial gathering has been scheduled for Thursday, July 7, at 7 p.m. at Elkins Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall. The memorial service is open to family and friends.

Arthur W. Stewart
Arthur Wright Stewart, 90, a resident of 1635 Taylor Ave., Elkins, and more recently a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 3, 2005, at the center.
He was born Dec. 30, 1914, at Glady, a son of the late Oscar Benjamin and Savannah “Georgie” Ratliff Stewart.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl Wingfield Stewart of Elkins; a son, Arthur Lee Stewart and wife, Joan, of Winchester, Va.; three daughters, Mrs. Barrett (Helena) Liggett, Mrs. Birch (Shirley) Hare and Mrs. John (Lois) Clingerman, all of Elkins; and one brother, Clifford “Happy” Stewart of Baltimore, Md. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews in Elkins as well as Sanford, N.C., and Lewiston, N.C.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Sampson, Harper and Leonard Stewart; one sister, Evelyn Wingfield; two grandchildren, Debra Kay Hare and Raymond Stewart; one half brother, Bennie Stewart; and one half sister, Lila (Stewart) Medlin of Sanford, N.C.
Mr. Stewart retired from Columbia Gas Co. in January 1977 after 33 years. He was past vice president of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship – Elkins Chapter, member of the AARP, Randolph County Senior Center and had been the bible teacher for 10 years at the senior center. Mr. Stewart was the first chairman and provided his expertise in establishing the gospel sing at the Mountain State Forest Festival. He was lead singer with the Assemblymen Quartet who sang at the Forest Festival and sang with Dycus Quartet. For many years, until he was physically unable, he and his daughter, Lois, continued to sing together. Prior to his ill health, he attended New Life Fellowship Church at Glenmore.

James D. Stiles
James Dale Stiles, 74, a resident of Limestone, St. George, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 10, 2005, after a brief illness.
He was born Sunday, Sept. 21, 1930, at his family homestead on Limestone Mountain, a son of the late James Okey Stiles and Laura Melvina Spessert Stiles of St. George.
He was a lifelong advocate for agriculture in the state of West Virginia. During his career, Jim served as a West Virginia University County Extension Agent in Tucker, Braxton, Tyler, Calhoun and Randolph counties, and was a founding member of the Mountain Aquaculture and Producers Association where he worked tirelessly to promote the science and industry of aquaculture throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
Jim served in Germany as a 1st Lt. in the United States Army and later was promoted to the rank of captain in the Army Reserve.
He was member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served as branch president of the New Martinsville and Gassaway branches.
Jim was a member of the Parsons Lions Club and the Tucker County Farm Bureau, and was a past member of the Parsons Kiwanis Club, Hendricks Ruritan Club and the Tucker County Development Authority. He was named professor emeritus of West Virginia University in 1990 upon his retirement from the WVU Extension Service.
Although agriculture was his passion, Jim’s true love was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Esther Kerns Stiles of St. George; two daughters, Teresa Stiles Myers and husband, Tony, of Parsons and Deborah Stiles and husband, David Hedrick, of Holly Meadows; four sons, James Mark Stiles of Reedsville, Richard Dale Stiles and wife, Joy, of Waynesboro, Pa., Michael Wayne Stiles and wife, Lori, of Martinsburg, and David Alan Stiles of Gaithersburg, Md.; one brother, Allen Zane Stiles of Elkins; two sisters, Faye “Tag” Stiles of St. George and JoAnn Kerekes of Barrackville; 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and one nephew.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Pearl Stiles Watkins.
The family will receive the comfort and support of friends on Sunday, June 12, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Parsons. Kenneth Daniel Stout, 44, of Cowen, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at Buckhannon.
He was born April 15, 1961, at Webster Springs, a son of the late Cecil and Elsie Marlow Stout.
He is survived by his former spouse, Elizabeth Irene Metzler Stout of Buckhannon.
In addition, he is survived by their four sons, Kenneth Daniel Stout II and girlfriend, Halo Coffman, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., Robert Lee Stout, John Jacob Stout and wife, Jennifer, and Luke David Stout, all of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Hailey Irene Stout of Buckhannon; one stepgrandson, Brent Sines of Buckhannon; five brothers, Charles Stout of Diana, Bernand Stout and Roger Stout of Webster Springs, Gary Stout of Weston and Richard Stout of Summersville; and four sisters, Carol Stout and Mary Jean Ubank of Webster County and Francis Stout and Cecile Hornung of Weston.

Freda Straley, 87, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, in the emergency department of Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 9, 1917, at Beverly, a daughter of the late John And Mozella Griffith Simmons.
She was married to Rex R. Straley, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are three sons, Rocky H. Bennett of Buckhannon, Ronald S. Bennett of Huttonsville and Freddy W. Bennett of Mill Creek; two sisters, Grace Hinzman of Valley Bend and Ruth Jones of Coalton; 30 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Eileen Lefever; and four sons, Rommie, Russell and Patrick Bennett and one infant son.
Mrs. Straley was a homemaker.

Bernard Streets
Bernard Kelly Streets Sr., 58, of Volga, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, Belington following an extended illness.
He was born April 6, 1946, at Volga, a son of the late Fred Dale and Virginia Marie Kelly Streets.
Surviving are two daughters, Kelly Lynn Streets of Volga and Belinda Denise Streets of East Dailey; one son, Bernard Kelly Streets Jr. of Volga; four brothers, Fred Jr. Streets of Volga, Richard Lee Streets of Elkins, Charles Edward Streets of Philippi and Willard Thomas Streets of Beverly; three sisters, Patricia D. Sandy of Volga, Janet Joane Streets of Elkins and Jeanie Irene Sandy of Pomeroy, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Steven Ware and Nicole Streets, both of East Dailey, and Breanna Streets of Volga.
Mr. Streets was a Vietnam veteran serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a heavy equipment mechanic in surface mining and oil and gas exploration. He was a member of the Queens Chapel United Methodist Church, LaurelMountain Post 410, VFW at Belington and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St., Philippi, with the Rev. Jack Streets officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hebron Memorial Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by Barbour Post 44 American Legion.

Deborah F. Streets
Deborah Faye Nestor Streets, 46, a resident of the Leadmine community, St. George, departed this life early Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2005, at her mother’s home in Parsons following a courageous battle with cancer. Her loving husband was at her bedside.
Deborah was born Monday, Dec. 7, 1959, at Parsons, a daughter of the late Hubert “Bud” Berton Nestor and Sarah Bell Summerfield Nestor, who survives.
On July 4, 1982, at Moore, she was united in marriage to Larry Lee Streets, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Adam Lee Streets and one daughter Chatel Autumn Streets, both of Leadmine; and one brother, Ernest Lee Nestor of Leadmine.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Mark Berton Nestor.
Deborah was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1978. She attended the Parsons Nazarene and the Leadmine United Methodist churches.
She had worked at Cortland Acres Nursing Home, the Tucker County Senior Center and at the time of her illness, she was a receptionist at the Blackwater Falls State Park. Debbie loved to fish and crochet.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate. To honor Deborah’s wishes, cremation will follow. Interment will take place at a later date. Cary L. Stump
Cary L. Stump, 70, a resident of the Tennerton community at Buckhannon, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Buckhannon.
He was born Nov. 12, 1935, at Gassaway, a son of Reta Whisman Stump of Flatwoods and the late Olen Stump.
He was married to Kay Riffle Stump, who survives at Buckhannon.
Also surviving are one daughter, Alma and Don Flint of Sutton; one son, Olen and wife, Robin Stump, of Buckhannon; two granddaughters, Jessica Flint of Redford, Mich., and Mandy Lockard of Belleville, Mich.; one grandson, Ryan Stump of Buckhannon; one brother, George and wife, Debbie Stump of Greensburg, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Becky and husband, Bobby Conrad, and Lisa and husband, Scott Stout, all of Orlando; two stepgrandsons, Joshua Conrad and Tyler Stout, both of Orlando; and two nieces, Heather Ochaleck of Lithia, Fla. and Holly Stump of Salisbury, N.C.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Stump, on March 27, 2001.
He was a construction worker and attended Cornerstone Assembly of God. He was a devoted husband and dad. He loved fishing, camping, hunting, being outdoors and spending time with his grandsons.

Malinda Jane “Linda” Stump, 79, a resident of Buckhannon, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Buckhannon.
She was born July 14, 1926, at Webster County, a daughter of the late Patrick Duffy Hamrick and Mary Martha Sycafoose Hamrick.
On Aug. 4, 1946, she was married to James Stump, who survives at Buckhannon.
Surviving in addition to her husband are one son, Micheal and wife, Celesta Stump, of Buckhannon; three daughters, Rose and Mike Whitehair, Brenda and Terry Cutright and Teresa and David Maxwell, all of Buckhannon; five grandsons Terry Junior “Joe” Cutright, Jeff Whitehair, Shane Whitehair, Todd Whitehair and David “DJ” Maxwell Jr, all of Buckhannon; five granddaughters, Michelle Kemp of Woodbridge, Va., Angel Phillips of Knoxville, Tenn, Amy Hatfield, Heather Small and Sydney Maxwell, all of Buckhannon; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lena Hamrick.
Also preceding her in death were one grandson, John Michael Whitehair Jr.; three brothers, Sylvester Hamrick, Herbert Hamrick and John Adison Hamrick; and two sisters, Madeline Dauphinee and Shella Bright.
She was a homemaker and was employed by Ralph’s Furniture of Buckhannon for 24 years. She attended Calvary Baptist and Liberty Baptist and was a member of Chapel Hill and Chapter 18 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a faithful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a dear friend. We will miss her and love her very much.

Patricia C. “Patty” Stump, 73, of Petersburg, died Wednesday, Oct, 12, 2005, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va.

Robert Michael “Stumpy” Stump, 57, of Indiana, Pa., died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at his home.
He was born to the late Telford Harold and Manoka Pearl Greenlief Stump on Jan. 18, 1948, in Buckhannon.
On Aug. 11, 1967, he was united in marriage to Loretta Mae Tenney Stump, who survives in Indiana, Pa.
Also surviving are a son, Robert Michael Stump II and wife, Jessica, of Indiana, Pa.; a daughter, Jennifer Michelle Stump of Baltimore, Md.; two granddaughters, Brittany and Katelyn Stump; three brothers, Frederick Eugene “Gene” Stump and wife, Mary, and Telford Harold Stump, Jr. and wife, Janet, all of Buckhannon and Gregory Allen Stump and wife, Fay, of Weirton; two sisters, Joyce Stump Gregory and husband, Jim, and Patricia Stump Hall and husband, Bud, all of Buckhannon; his “second” father, Basil Tenney of Hemlock; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Allison Hope Stump, and his “second” mother, Opal Tenney.
Mike was a member of the BPO Elks 931. A veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard where he earned a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Award. He was employed in sales by Northeast Energy for the past 10 years. He had been retired from McJunkin Corp. after 31 years of employment. He enjoyed reading, golfing, walking on the beach at sunrise and spending time with his family. Mike was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.

John E. Sturm
John E. Sturm, 81, of Buckhannon, died Thursday Feb. 24, 2005, at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon following a long illness.
He was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Mannington, a son of the late Goffe and Mary Thorn Sturm.
Mr. Sturm was employed by the Federal Fish and Wildlife Services, having retired from the Bowden National Fish Hatchery in Randolph County with 24 years service.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army in the African-Middle Eastern, Italy, and European Theatres. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal with Cluster for injuries sustained during combat.
He was a member of the Chelyan Lodge 158, AF&AM in Belle and was protestant by faith.
Mr. Sturm loved to spend time with his grandchildren, who were very dear to him, and also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
He was a graduate of Mannington High School.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia B. Smith Sturm, whom he married June 15, 1958; a son and daughter-in-law, John Mart and Kelly Sturm, Buckhannon; a daughter, Rhonda J. Judy, Buckhannon; two grandsons, Darren J. Judy and John Tyler Sturm; one granddaughter, Kaitlyn Nicole Sturm; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Beryle J. Calvert, Dana Ruth DeVaul, Logansport, and Mary Anne and John Robison, Urbana, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews whom he was very fond of and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Elwood P. Calvert and Gary DeVaul. Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home, 500 E. Main St., Mannington, today from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Mike Cunningham officiating. James E. Stutler
James Edward Stutler, 79, a resident of 45 Pleasant Ave., Elkins, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 21, 2005, at his home.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leon Hevener and the Rev. Donald Lockhart officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman. James E. Stutler
James Edward Stutler, 79, a resident of 45 Pleasant Ave. in Elkins, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 21, 2005, at his home.
He was born June 23, 1925, at Smithburg in Dodridge County, a son of the late Stephen Brenard Stutler and Josephine Pope Stutler.
On Dec. 13, 1952, at West Union, he was married to the former Hellen Lavaughn Gaskins, who survives.
Also surviving are five sons, Stephen James Stutler of Charlton Heights, Charles Eugene Stutler, Richard Vernan Stutler, Jeffrey Paul Stutler and Clifford Dale Stutler, all of Elkins; one daughter, Ruth Ann Stutler Sitavich of Union, Ky.; one sister, Mary Key Frame of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren, Paul, Renee and Sarah Sitavich, Jennifer Stutler, Jason Morehard; and one great-grandson, Trent.
He was preceded in death by one brother, William Stutler; and one grandchild, Jesse Morehard.
He was a 1948 graduate of Dodridge County High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a construction foreman with C&P Telephone until his retirement. He was a member of the West Virginia Telephone Pioneers. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a 50-year member of Friendship Lodge No. 56 of West Union. He loved any type of music and was an active member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church of Elkins.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today from the Tomblyn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leon Heavner and the Rev. Donald Lockhart officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman where full military rites were accorded by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, West Virginia Affiliate, P.O. Box 11062, Charleston, W.Va. 25339 or to Mountain Hospice, 1410 Crim Ave., Belington, W.Va. 26250 in memory of Mr. Stutler. Darrel G. Suder
Darrel Glen Suder, 32, of Route 4, Box 556-B, Buckhannon, died at 11:25 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, at his home.
He was born Oct. 12, 1972, at Buckhannon, a son of Robert Lee Suder and Evon Kelley Suder of Buckhannon, who survive.
On June 19, 1999, he was married to Cathy Saffle Suder, who survives.
Also surviving are his maternal grandmother, Lillie Perry Kelley of Tallmansville; one son, Dalton Levi Suder of Buckhannon; three brothers, Nelson and Rhonda Suder, Alvin Suder and Mason Suder, all of Buckhannon; six sisters, Marilyn and Kermit Hawkins of Buckhannon, Loretta and Terry Steffen of Victoria, Va., Wanda and Todd Lenning of Burkeville, Va., Freda and Dave Luyster of Scio, Ohio, Virginia Kelly of Buckhannon and Nicole and David Nelson of Burkeville, Va.; and 17 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Paul Kelley; paternal grandfather, Alva “Doc” Suder; and paternal grandmother, Virginia Williams Suder.
He was a mechanic for the West Virginia Department of Highways and a member of the National Rifle Association.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home with Pastor Beryl McKisic officiating.  From 20 Apr 2005.

Vauna Summerfield
Vauna R. Summerfield, 66, a resident of College Avenue, Buckhannon, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
She was born May 17, 1939, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Hugh Robinson and Katherine Hosaflook Robinson.
On April 18, 1958, she was united in marriage to Edward F. Summerfield, who survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are one son, Edward Alan Summerfield and wife, Tricia, of Spartanburg, S.C.; two daughters, Amy Duke and husband, Danny, of Buckhannon and Alice Salmonson and husband, Jim, of Holly Spring, N.C.; one sister, Nancy Tenney and husband, Robert, of Sidney, Ohio; one granddaughter, Kaitlyn Salmonson, of Holly Springs, N.C.; three grandsons, Matthew Duke and Michael Duke of Buckhannon and Payton Salmonson of Holly Springs, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; one aunt, Ruth Oley and husband, Stanley, of Kingston, N.H.; and one brother-in-law, A.W. Summerfield and wife, Marge of Shinnston.
She was a realtor for Rohr Realty and attended Chapel Hill United Methodist Church of Buckhannon. She was a member of Chapter 18 OES, Red Hat Society, Buckhannon Woman’s Club, West Virginia Board of Realtors, National Association of Realtors and Weston-Buckhannon Board of Realtors. She was a loving wife and devoted mother, sister and friend.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. On Sunday, she will lie in state at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the service hour. The Rev. Gary Stackpole will officiate and interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery at Hinkleville. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.  From 23 Sep 2005.

Forrest P.D. Summers
Forrest Pete Darrel Summers, 84, departed this life peacefully at his residence on Spruce Fork in Buckhannon Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, at 9:25 a.m. after a long illness.
He was born Feb. 24, 1921, to the late Creed Robert Summers and Dona Mae Duncan Summers of Stonecoal near Horner in Lewis County.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Thelma F. Rippetoe Summers; four children, Drema Lanham and husband, Robert, of Pennsboro, Darrel Summers and wife, Wanda, of Horner, Joyce Heckert and husband, Robert, of Charleston and Lois Yousefi and husband, Abbas, of Middletown, Del.; and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Summers began his career in 1941 as a welder with Barium Reduction in South Charleston. In 1942, he was called to serve his country in World War II as a member of the 11th Army Air Corps in the U.S. Army in the North Pacific as a corporal. While serving in the Aleutian Islands during the battle of Kiska, he was awarded the Bronze Battle Star and the Good Conduct Medal, and was also awarded three Overseas Bars and one service stripe. He was honorably discharged Oct. 27, 1945, from Tinker Field Air Force Base in Oklahoma. After his discharge, Mr. Summers resumed his career as a welder with Barium Reduction for many years until the company was purchased by PPG Industries. In 1965, he was transferred to Natrium, north of New Martinsville, where he continued to work until his retirement in April of 1983. After retirement, he and his wife moved to their 73-acre farm in Buckhannon and built a new home. Mr. Summers enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, riding his four-wheeler, and also enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren coming to visit. He was a wonderful husband, father, and friend to everyone. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need. He was a Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Doug Smailes of Vandilla Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at the family cemetery on his farm. Col. John L. Sutton
John L. Sutton, 91 of Parkersburg, formerly of Elkins, died Feb. 10, 2005, after a wonderful, productive and honorable life. John was a gentleman, a friend and a devoted and loving husband and father.
He was born Dec. 8, 1913, in Mill Creek, the son of the late John Robey Sutton and Theresa Liggett Sutton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Byron Woods and James Sutton; and a sister, Lucille Sutton Lang.
He is survived and missed by his wife, Hazel Linger Sutton; one son and spouse, Dr. John B. and Stephanie Sutton of Matinsburg; one daughter and spouse, Carol and Vince Jiga of Macksburg, Ohio; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many dear friends and relatives.
He graduated from West Virginia University in 1938 with a degree in business and economics and later received his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Denver. He held a CPA license. He was a veteran of World War II having served his country in the Pacific as a bombardier/navigator. He retired from the Air Force in 1966 after a 33-year career. He is the former owner and manager of the Tygart Valley Phone Co. in Mill Creek. He also served as a director of the Mountain Valley Bank. Upon retiring, he and his wife moved to San Antonio, Texas, where they lived until August 2003, when they moved to Parkersburg. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elkins.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in his memory. Anthony C. Sypolt
Anthony Carl Sypolt, 48, of Rowlesburg, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 7, 1956, in Kingwood, son of Carl Gay Sypolt and the late Edith Watkins Sypolt.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked at Kingston Charcoal Plant in Parsons for many years.
He is survived by his father, Carl, and stepmother, Lettie Sypolt, of Rowlesburg; two sons, Anthony and Tracy Sypolt of Front Royal, Va., and Jeff and Dawn Sypolt of Bayard; their mother and stepfather, Teresa and Scott Maxwell; five brothers and spouses, Ronald and Joy, Mike and Bonnie, Lonnie, Greg and Rhonda, and Tim and Peggy; six sisters, Carla Sypolt, Celesta and Charlie Rodeheaver, Amy and Archie Amie, Annie Heckler, Angie White, Alice Sypolt and Joe Lott; three grandchildren, Holly Raub, Justin and Brianna Hartman.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one brother, Edward, and one granddaughter, Ambreliyah Jessie Sypolt.
Friends may call at Burke Chapel in Rowlesburg today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from noon until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Kenneth W. Lake officiating. Burial will follow at Shaffer Family Cemetery. Morgan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.  From 24 Feb 2005.
