Rodney L. Armstrong
Rodney Lane Armstrong, 40, a former resident of Elkins and a resident of
Pine Street, Petersburg, passed away unexpectedly while hiking on North
Mountain, Pendleton County.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are under the direction of Tomblyn
Funeral Home of Elkins for Rodney Lane Armstrong.
Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.tomblynfuneralhome.com.
From 27 Dec 2005.
Rodney L. Armstrong
Rodney Lane Armstrong, 40, of Petersburg, formerly of Elkins, joined his Savior,
Jesus Christ, Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, in the Highlands of West Virginia on
North Fork Mountain Trail.
Born March 6, 1965, Rodney leaves two young daughters, Leah and Alexis, whom he
loved more than anything in the world and whom we all keep in our prayers. They
are the daughters of Rhonda Knotts Jack, wife of T.L. Jack II of Elkins.
He is also survived by his loving family, his mother, Reta M. Armstrong of
Chenoweth Creek Road; four brothers, Randal D. “Randy” Armstrong of
Barrington, N.H., David A. Armstrong of Belington, Daniel A. “Danny” Yokum
of Coalton and Charles D. “Wayne” Armstrong of Hickory, N.C.; and two
sisters, Deanna F. “Dee” Armstrong of Fairmont and Lisa M. Armstrong of
Abingdon, Md. He is also survived by many close friends, including his best and
longest friend, Dennis McLaughlin of Morgantown.
His father, Gerald F. Armstrong, preceded him in death.
Rodney graduated from Elkins High School with the class of 1983. He received his
bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from West Virginia
University and a master of science degree in adult and technical education from
Marshall University. After college, he worked as an engineer for a defense
contractor at the Naval Research Laboratory in the Washington, D.C. area, where
he was an expert in the propagation of electromagnetic energy such as radar,
radio and electronic warfare signals.
For the past 12 years he had been a teacher at Tri-County Technical School in
Petersburg and at Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College in
Moorefield. He loved both jobs and many of his students have received rewards
and gained employment as a result of his efforts.
Rodney was also a talented writer of poetry. An example is “Particles,”
published by the Avatar Review. It reads:
Particles
Night after the fish kill
Particles are scarce,
There’s little to cling
Between dense stars.
A southern wind insists,
The waves of willow lake
Slap their thousands
At our feet. They twitch
Dead reeds along the bank.
Jug mouths offer nothing
But baritones.
Across the lake, moonlight
Falls like scales
From dead fish, each flake
A gasp of particles
In the darkness.
In turning to go we see
We leave no footprints.
We cling to keep
From being
Scattered by the wind.
He was a great lover of the outdoors and of these majestic mountains, and so
it seems fitting that the place he loved was his final resting place — among
the tall, whispering trees and under a clear sky. He will be remembered for his
bright green eyes, his quick smile, his giggly laugh, his immense intelligence
and his caring and generously giving heart. Rodney was a member of the North
Fork Baptist Church in Riverton. Rodney, we will love and miss you always.
