Martha Lee Ward Gainer, 72, a former resident of the Crystal Springs community
and more recently of Nella’s Nursing Home, departed this life early this
morning, April 20, 2004, at the Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in
declining health.

Martha Gainer
Martha Lee Ward Gainer, 72, a former resident of the Crystal Springs community
and more recently of Nella’s Nursing Home departed this life early Tuesday
morning, April 20, 2004, at the Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in
declining health for the past 12 years.
She was born Thursday, July 30, 1931, at Elkins, the daughter of the late Austin
Ward and Edna Stalnaker Ward.
On July 19, 1948, at Oakland, Maryland, she was married to James L. Gainer, who
preceded her in death October 17, 1991.
Surviving are two sons, Dr. James W. Gainer and wife, Marisa, of Elkins and Dr.
Kenneth M. Gainer and wife, Dawn, of Hagerstown, Md.; three daughters, Sherry
Cunningham and husband, Michael, of Elkview, Janice Minutelli and husband,
Michael, of Fairmont and Cathy Kalar and husband, Lee, of Elkins; two sisters,
Patty West and husband, Tom, of Doswell, Va., and Eloise Smock of Elkhart, Ind.;
13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband was one sister, Betty Lou
Barr.
Martha was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1949, was a former
secretary for the United Way, Fletcher Insurance and the First Baptist Church.
She was a member of the Crystal Springs Mixed Quartet and a former member of the
First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir, the Women’s
Inspiration Trio and played the piano and organ.
For the last several years she had been a member of the First United Methodist
Church.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins
from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral
home chapel at 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and

Mildred F. “Millie” Waugh Gainer, 87, a former resident of 108 Wilton Ave.,

Lois, of McCormick, S.C.; one sister, Patty Crouch of Charleston and several
nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband are two brothers, Ben and
Yancy Waugh; and two sisters, Betty Dennis and Margaret Ruth “Bunny” Brown.
Millie attended elementary school at Spruce, middle school at Cass and was a
graduate of Elkins High School.
She retired from the Montgomery Ward Co. after 30 years of service, was a member
of the Emma Scott Garden Club, the Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern
Star, and was a life member of the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church.

Glenna Gaines
Glenna Merle Gillum Huffman Gaines, 57, of Route 1, French Creek, died Tuesday,
Feb. 24, 2004, at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.
She was born April 4, 1946, in Upshur County, the daughter of the late Elijah
Ethan Gillum and Ollie Madge Hyre Gillum.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Delbert Gerald Huffman, in
January 1975, and by her second husband, Robert Gaines.
She is survived by two daughters, Teresa Diane Huffman and Barbara Ann Huffman
Cutright and husband, Randy, all of Route 1, French Creek; two sons, Terry Wayne
Huffman and Gerald “Jud” Lee Huffman and wife, Tena, all of Route 1, French
Creek; and four grandchildren, Deena Marie Cutright, Joshua Davis Cutright,
Ashlee Dawn Huffman and Tyler Lee Huffman.
In addition to her parents and her two husbands, she was also preceded in death
by one son, Keith O’Dell Huffman.
She was a Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel from 5
p.m. to 9 p.m. today. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral
chapel with the Rev. Ressie Robinson and the Rev. Conrad Tenney officiating.

William V. Gaines
William V. Gaines, 82, of Route 1, Box 327-1, Buckhannon, died Tuesday, June 8,
2004, in Broaddus Hospital in Philippi.
He was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Wilsonburg, the son of the late James Ernest
Gaines and Florence Ann Westfall Gaines.
On Dec. 20, 1970, he was married to Gladys Tucker Gaines, who survives.
Surviving are three sons, William Gaines and James Gaines, and Floyd B. Moore of
Charleston; two daughters, Patricia Moorehead of Mannington and Lucy Wodzinski
of Buckhannon; one brother, Wornie Gaines of Everettsville; several
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Gaines and Charles Gaines; and
two sisters, Helen Gaines and Nancy Gaines.
Mr. Gaines was a coal miner and factory worker. He served in the U.S. Army
during World War II.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Poling-St. Clair
Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday. Interment will be
in the Mt. Lebanon Church Cemetery. Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
3663 and Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion will conduct military honors

Carl D. Gardner
Carl D. "Denny" Gardner, 84, of Jane Lew, died Tuesday, Nov. 23,
2004, at his home after a sudden illness.
He was born Jan. 26, 1920, at Cowen, a son of the late Alden and Ada Kessler
Gardner.
He was united in marriage on April 9, 1948, to Betty Jo Snyder Gardner, who
survives.
He is also survived by one son, William D. "Bill" Gardner and wife,
Dorothy, of Jane Lew; two daughters, Molly Burkhammer and husband, Bill, of
Weston and Donna Gaines and husband, Delbert, of French Creek; six
grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three
stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathleen Straw of Elkins.
He was preceded in death by one son, one stepgranddaughter, and two brothers.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II, was retired from the
state road with 36 years of service and was a member of the First Baptist Church
of Weston.
At the request of the deceased, the body will be cremated. A memorial service
will be held at a later date at the First Baptist Church in Weston. In lieu of
flowers, donations would be appreciated. The Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel

Zane A. Gardner
Zane Andrew Gardner, 11 months, infant son of Mary Gardner of 314 1/2 Davis St.
and Heath Turner of Elkins, passed away at 2:08 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at
his residence on Davis Street. Death was attributed to ATRT, brain cancer. Zane
passed away at home in the arms of his Mommy.
Zane was born at 10:19 p.m. Oct. 25, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by his maternal
grandmother, Karen Gardner of Montrose; maternal grandfather, Melvin Ketterman
of Dry Fork; paternal grandmother, Brenda Turner of Cabins; paternal
grandfather, William C. Turner of Onego and his paternal great-grandparents,
William J. and Arvella Turner of Onego.
Also surviving are one aunt, Virginia Gardner of Montrose; three uncles, David
Gardner Jr. of Montrose, William J. “Johnny” Turner and Shawn Turner, both
of Onego; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends from around the world.
Zane, our precious angel here on Earth, earned his wings for Heaven this 26th
day of September 2004. In his short time here on Earth, he touched many
people’s hearts and lives. People from around the world came together to pray
for Zane.
His smile would light up any room.
His touch would melt your heart.
His kisses were like being kissed by an angel.
Zane’s Web site has received e-mail ([email protected]), prayers from
around the world including China, Japan, the United Kingdom and Madagascar, and
that does not include the e-mails he received from every state in the U.S.
Though now he goes home to be with Jesus, Zane will always be remembered by his
smile, his love and all the lives he touched. He will be sadly missed, however,
his special life, no matter how short, will always be the place in our hearts
that no one can touch.
Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m.
Wednesday. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel at 1 p.m.
Thursday. The Rev. Terry Burgess, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene,

Harley Jefferson Garrett, 86, of 15 Hawkins Drive, Buckhannon, died at 7 a.m.
Friday, July 9, 2004, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born May 2, 1918, in Fenwick, the son of the late William Franklin
Garrett and Ida Taylor Garrett.
On April 15, 1986, he was married to Dorothy Warner Garrett, who survives.
Surviving are three sons, Patrick Garrett and wife, Diane, of Baltimore, Md.,
Stephen Streets and wife, Brenda, of Warren, Ohio, and Alan Streets of Warren,
Ohio; one daughter, Pamela Streets of Buckhannon; one brother, Harry Keller of
Oakland, Md.; three sisters, Mae Bragg of Weston, Violet Brown of Summersville
and Midge Houlk of Columbus, Ohio; three granddaughters, Lindsay Marie Streets
of Buckhannon, Breann Streets of Warren, Ohio, and Stephanie Streets of Warren,
Ohio; and one grandson, Jacob Streets of Warren, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Milton Garrett and Herman Garrett; and
one sister, Sue Cooper.
He was a supervisor for Butler Aviation and served in the U.S. Army during World
War II.
He was a lifetime member of the Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663.

Laura Lee Hupp Gatewood, 80, of Glen Dale, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, in the
Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling.
She was born Dec. 1, 1923, in Wheeling, a daughter of the late John W. and Helen
M. Whitehouse Hupp.
Mrs. Gatewood was a homemaker and a member of the St. Jude Catholic Church, Glen
Dale.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Leola Yager;
and two brothers, John and Thomas Hupp.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 57 years, Clyde E. Gatewood; two sons,
Ronald C. Gatewood and wife, Patricia, of Bel-Air, Md., and Robert W. Gatewood
and wife, Deborah, of Sandwich, Mass.; two daughters, Kathryn “Kitty” Lee
and husband, David, of Elkins, and Paula Schubert and husband, Robert, of Glen
Dale; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Herbert Hupp
and wife, Rena, of Pt. Pleasant, Robert Hupp and wife, Constance, of

Donnia Gatrell
Donnia Lou Bishop Gatrell, 67, a resident of Connecticut and for the past two
years a resident of Parsons, departed this life Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Ruby
Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. She had been in failing health for the past
five months. Death was attributed to respiratory failure.
She was born Thursday, Nov. 19, 1936, in Fairmont, the daughter of Harold J.
Bishop, who preceded her in death, and Gladys I. Bray of Tampa, Fla.
On June 19, 1957, at Bolt, she was married to John David Gatrell, who preceded
her in death on Aug. 20, 2002.
Also surviving are two sons, Jon B. “Butch” Gatrell of Redding, Conn., and
Robert Len Gatrell and wife, Sue, of Frederick, Md.; and one brother, Bernard
Bishop of Orlando, Fla.
Preceding her in death was one brother, Robert Bishop.
She was a graduate of Trap Hill High School in West Virginia in the class of
1954. She attended the Looper School of Business in Charleston and Morris Harvey
Junior College in Charleston.
She was a former employee of the T-Bar Inc., Norwalk Model Engineering, Danbury
Business Institute, Westchester Book/Rainsford Type, and Intrex (ASI) Inc., all
in Connecticut. She was a publishing typesetter for Boehringer Ingelheim and was
an administrative assistant at Danbury Hospital of Connecticut.
She was a member of the Holly Meadows Community Education Outreach Service and
the United Methodist Women of Parsons. She attended Parsons Presbyterian Church.
Donnia had a great love for bird watching and collecting angels.

Charlene Gay, 73, a resident of 112 Sunset Drive, Elkins, passed away at 3:45
a.m. Sunday, March 14, 2004, at her home. She had been in failing health but her
death was unexpected.
She was born May 19, 1930, at Arlington, the daughter of the late Charles Cecil
and Eva Blanche Hamner Davidson.
On Sept. 15, 1950, in Buckhannon, she was married to Robert Strader Gay, who
survives in Elkins.
Also surviving are one daughter, D’Ann Himes and husband, Tom, of Culloden;
one granddaughter, Alison Stone and husband, Chad, and one stepgreat-grandson,
Treyton Stone, all of Hurricane. One sister, Sue Tomblyn and husband, Myron, of
Elkins; and nieces and nephews, Mark, Dinah, Amanda and Alex Tomblyn, Phil
Tomblyn, Lisa, Chuck, Julie, Katie and Amelia Preusch also survive.
Charlene attended the schools of Upshur County and was a homemaker. She was a
member of Martha Washington Chapter No. 22 Order of the Eastern Star, the First
United Methodist Church of Elkins and the Julia Bonafield Circle No. 4 of the
church.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in
Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home
chapel with Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley and Rev. Dr. Harold T. Elmore officiating.
Interment will follow in the Heavener Cemetery at Buckhannon. In lieu of

Albert Gedraitis
Albert Edward “Abe” Gedraitis, 79, a resident of 108 Lee St. in Belington
since 1975, departed this life at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 9, 2004, at his home
following an extended illness.
He was born April 20, 1925, at Russellton Pa., a son of the late Anthony and
Anna Balezantis Gedraitis. On June 17, 1949, at Winchester, Va., he was united
in marriage to the former Betty Dorothy Evans, who preceded him in death on May
16, 1986.
Surviving are one son, Gary Anthony Gedraitis and wife, Sharon, of Whitesville;
one daughter, Linda Poe and husband, Wayne, of Belington; three grandchildren,
Lisa Marie Poe and fiancÈ, Daniel Papez, of Philippi, Crystal Lynn Poe of
Belington and Michael Anthony Gedraitis of Whitesville; and one
great-grandchild, Kaliegh Brooke Papez. Also surviving are one brother, Edward
Young of Oakmont Pa., and one sister, Julie Hudec of Katy, Texas.
In addition to his parents and wife he is preceded in death by one brother, Joe
Gedraitis, and one sister, Anna Kristofic.
Mr. Gedraitis attended the schools of Pennsylvania and was a graduate of the
Diesel Institute of Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Belington Catholic
Resurrection Mission Church, was a veteran of World War II having served in the
U.S. Navy, and retired from Kitt Energy Mining in Philippi.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 6 p.m. to
9 p.m. on Tuesday. At 8 p.m. Tuesday, a prayer service will be conducted from
the funeral home parlor by Sister Theresa Reddington. On Wednesday, Mr.
Gedraitis will be moved to the St. Brendan Catholic Church in Elkins where the
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. with Father William
Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial
Gardens at Gilman where the presentation of the American Flag will be conducted

Kyle Geiser
Kyle Richard Geiser, 19, a resident of Route 1, Montrose, passed away Thursday
evening, March 4, 2004, at his home.
He was born April 14, 1984, in Seoul, South Korea, a son of Richard
"Dick" Geiser and Margaret Jenkins Geiser of Route 1, Montrose.
Also surviving are a sister, Carlie Geiser, at home; paternal grandfather George
T. Geiser of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and aunts and uncles including George and Lili
Geiser, Ann Roberts, Nancy and Bill Schultz, Bob and Robin Jenkins and Libby and
Graham Gell.
Kyle was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 2002 and attended
Davis and Elkins College. He was a recipient of the Knight of the Golden

Richard J. Gennantonio, 80, of Seminole, Fla., died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at
the Northside Hospital and Heart Institute.
He was born March 24, 1924, in Thomas, the son of the late Donato and Nancy
Gennantonio.
He is survived by wife, Estela T. Gennantonio; two brothers, Danny Gennantonio
of North Carolina and John Gennantonio of Cincinnati, Ohio; and two sisters,
Mary Harmon of Woodville, Ohio, and May Barkley of Thomas.
Mr. Gennantonio retired from the Sperry Corp. where he was employed as an
electrical engineer and also from Unisys after 35 years of service.
He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Seminole, Fla.
He served in the submarine service of the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr.
Gennantonio was a member of American Legion Post 252 in Seminole, Fla., Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 15050 of West Virginia and PCFI of Tampa, Fla.
At the request of the deceased, his remains were cremated. The Mass of Christian
Burial will be at St. Thomas Catholic Church at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Rev.
Fr. Timothy Grassi officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Calvary

Burton B. George, formerly of Strasburg, Va., and Parsons, departed this life on
Friday, March, 19, 2004, at his home in Peachtree City, Ga.
He was born at Norton on Aug. 10, 1914, the son of William E. and Julia Corley
George of Barbour County.
He attended schools in Barbour and Randolph counties. He was a former resident
of Parsons where he was self-employed for a number of years.
His parents and his loving wife, Mary Nestor George, preceded him in death. He
and his wife celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Also preceding him were one son, Barry George; seven brothers and three sisters.
He was the loving father of Mary Louise and Rufus Bross of Peachtree City, Ga.,
and Cindy Allanson of Silver Spring, Md.; and the loving grandfather of Richard
Ball of Lawrenceville, Ga., Sherry Hopkins of Peachtree City, Ga., and Barry and
Andy George of Maryland.
Alos surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and three sisters, L. Amy Arbogast of
Elkins, Eleanora Woodford of Beckley and Georgia Pope of New Bern, N.C.
Memorial services will be in Virginia at a later date. In lieu of flowers,

Samuel A. George, 64, of Minerva, Ohio, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, in Aultman
Hospital in Canton, Ohio, following an extended illness.
He was born May 1, 1940, in Belington, the son of Odie and Elsie Helwig George.
He retired from Republic Engineered Products, was a U.S. Army veteran and a
member of the Malvern American Legion, Minerva Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
4120 and the Minerva Eagles Aerie 2199.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Greco George, whom he married May 9, 1969;
one son, William George, of the home; six sisters, Iona Pharis of Belington,
Lucille Clark of Akron, Ohio, Anna Davis of Belington, Vonda Abbott of
Spartanburg, S.C., Velma Karickhoff of Buckhannon and Ruth George of Ellamore;
two brothers, Carl George of Fredericksburg, Va., and Neil George of Belington;
one great-aunt, Greta Helwig of Huttonsville; several nieces and nephews and
great-nieces and great-nephews; and his beloved dog, Mischief.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Karickhoff and Cynthia George.
Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Gotschall-Hutchinson Funeral

Wayne Thomas Gibbons, 62, of Elyria, Ohio, and formerly of Selbyville, died Dec.

He is survived by his wife, Viola Dilley Gibbons.
He is also survived by two daughters, Wanda and Donna; two sons, Wayne and

Hazel M. Gibbs, 91, of Buckhannon, formerly of the Tennerton community, died
Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
She was born Aug. 14, 1913, in Hyer, the daughter of the late Robert and Dora
Perkins Woofter.
Her husband, Charles “Bud” Gibbs, preceded her in death.
Surviving are six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Andy
Woofter of Frenchton, Brooks Woofter of New Straitsville, Ohio, and Paul Woofter
of Beckley; three sisters, Martha Smith of Buckhannon, Elizabeth Rittler of
Baltimore, Md., and Betty Gaddy of Lampasas, Texas; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Helene Hull; three brothers and three
sisters.
She was a homemaker.
Visitation was at the Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel today from 11 a.m.

Donald “Bud” Gibson, 80, of RD 2, Proctor, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, in

He was a retired employee of Consol Coal, Ireland Mines.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nona Gibson in
1991; and a sister, Elaine Bright.

brother, Charles Gibson of Belington; five sisters, Irene Coontz of Belington,

Kimberly Dawn Gil, Isabel Marie Gil and Gabriel Ulysses Gil, residents of
Elkins, passed away Saturday evening, July 17, 2004, near Clarksburg as a result
of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Kimberly Gil, 37, was born April 18, 1967, in Elkins, the daughter of Elmer U.
Currence of East Dailey and Cherri Currence of Elkins.
She was married to Ruben Gil, who survives in Dunn, N.C.
Also surviving are one brother, Douglas Currence of Morgantown; a special aunt,
Robin Beth Churchill, who was raised with Kimberly; paternal grandparents,
Carrol and Zelma Currence; and her paternal great-grandfather, Jacob “Jake”
Currence.
She was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School and planned to attend
Vocational Nursing School in 2005.
She was employed by the North Carolina Department of Corrections and later by
Huttonsville Correctional Center.
She attended Colonial Baptist Church in North Carolina and the Mill Creek
Presbyterian Church.
Isabel Marie Gil, 6, was born March 15, 1998, in Raleigh, N.C. Gabriel Ulysses
Gil, 7, was born Oct. 3, 1996, in Raleigh, N.C.
Both are the children of Ruben Gil of Dunn, N.C., and the late Kimberly Dawn
Gil.
Surviving are paternal grandparents, Joe M. Gil and Alejandrina C. Becerra;
maternal grandparents, Elmer Currence of East Dailey and Cherri Currence of
Elkins; paternal great-grandmother, Celia M. Lozano; maternal
great-grandparents, Carrol and Zelma Currence; and maternal
great-great-grandfather Jacob “Jake” Currence.
Both were students at Jennings Randolph Elementary School where Isabel completed
kindergarten and Gabriel completed first grade.
Both loved fishing with their “Pap Paw.” Isabel loved dolls and writing, and
was a member of Center Stage Dance Studio. Gabriel loved electronic games, coin
collecting, reading and scary movies.
Both children attended the Mill Creek Presbyterian Church.

Mabel Margaret Gillespie, 83, of 220 Buffalo St., Elkins, died Saturday, Oct.

She was born Nov. 5, 1920 in Red Rock, the daughter of Rhys Thomas Evans and

On Dec. 20, 1941, she was married to Thurman Lynn Gillespie, who died on July 4,
1991.
Surviving are two sons, James Edward Nixon of Canton, Ohio, and Michael S.
Gillespie of Buckhannon; one daughter, Patricia Lynn Fletcher of Elkins; one
brother, Rhys Thomas Evans Jr. of Buckhannon; one sister, Mildred Ann Carpenter

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one sister, Jazmin Deadra Gillum;
and one brother, Adaryus Ryan Gillum.
Also surviving are maternal grandparents, Belenda Joy White Sandy and Robert
Dennis “Denny” Sandy of Mount Nebo; one aunt, Chrissy Nichole Sandy of Vero

Dorothy L. Glaspell
Dorothy Lee Glaspell, 82, a resident of Elkins and a former resident of James
Street, Bridgeport, passed away Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at her residence.
She was born June 1, 1922, the daughter of the late James D. and Vesta Doak
McClain.
Preceding her in death was her husband, James Arden Glaspell, in 1985.
Surviving are one son, Jack Glaspell and wife, Julia, of Elkins; four
grandchildren, Marsha Calhoun, Mary Elizabeth Kennedy, Jack A. Glaspell and
Shawn Glaspell; six great-grandchildren; and several cousins including Rosalie
Bergdoll and Nancy Mason.
Also preceding her in death were one son, James Lee Glaspell; one brother,
Manion McClain; and one great-grandson, Mark Balsar.
Mrs. Glaspell graduated from St. Mary’s Nursing School in Clarksburg. She
worked as a nurse for St. Mary’s Hospital, Union Protestant Hospital and
Heartland of Clarksburg Nursing Home. She also provided nursing for home health
care.
She enjoyed being a homemaker and canned much of the produce from the family
garden. She also made rag rugs. She was a member of the Randolph County Senior
Center.

Miles Willie “Bill” Glendenning, 67, a resident of Beverly, passed away
Saturday evening, Nov. 6, 2004, in the emergency department of the Davis
Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 29, 1937, in Elkins, a son of the Late Jerome Weslie
“Gerry” Glendenning and Goldie A. Ailstock Poe. He was never married.
Surviving are his life’s loving companion and friend, Daisy Hawkins, with whom
he made his home for the past 21 years; two sisters, Alvina Simmons and Rose
Martin, both of Elkins; two half-sisters, Candy Perez of Texas and Robin
Glendenning, address unknown; a half-brother, Chuck Glendenning of Oklahoma; a
special nephew, Alfred Lee Sharp of Elkins; a nephew, Nippy Martin of Mill
Creek; and six nieces, Alverda Lynn Sharp of Teter Creek Lake community, April
Dawn Channell, Evelyn Kaye Brown, Rebecca Sue Carr, Christine Diane Waddell and
Margaret Sue Fortney, all of Elkins. He also leaves behind this two special K-9
companions, Molly Girl and Buttwheat.
Preceding him in death were four half-brothers, Jerry, Frankie, Terry and infant
Ronnie Glendenning.
He retired from Elkins Hardwood Dimension in 1999. He had a love for woodworking
and Indian artifact collection. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and flower
gardening.

Linda Glover
Linda “Linny” Romain Glover, 57, a resident of Elkins, began her new journey
on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004. Linny battled cancer for seven years and had been in
declining health for several months. She was cared for in her home by family
members and Mountain Hospice.
Linny was born on Tuesday, July 29, 1947, in Grafton. She was the daughter of
Charles E. and Pauline Sapp Glover, both of whom preceded her in death.
Linny is survived by her husband, Bob McCoy, of Elkins; her daughter, Tracy, and
husband, Ron Gooden, of Elkins and her daughter, Val, and husband, Brandt
Gunther, of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Richard Glover of Monrovia, Md.; and one
sister, Pam McLaughlin of Elkins. She has three grandchildren, Abby Gooden of
Elkins, and Alex and Avery Gunther of Raleigh, N.C.
Linny attended the schools of Grafton and graduated from Grafton High School
with the class of 1965. After two years of business school, she moved to
Wilmington, Del. She moved to Elkins in 1973 to accept employment at Appalachian
Community Health Center, where she worked in the business office for 31 years,
retiring in March of this year.
Linny was an avid pool player and a student of the game. She enjoyed introducing
other women to the sport, and she participated in league and tournament
competition in Elkins.
Linny loved to read and garden and many people say she had the best recipe in
town for Harvard beets. Linny loved blues music and shared friendships with
several musicians who come to Elkins each year for Augusta. She was a founding
member of the Elkins Blues Week Women’s Auxiliary.
At Linny’s request, her body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at
a later date and will be under the direction of the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home

Pearl Kirby Goddin, formerly of Elkins and more recently a resident of
Scottsdale, Ariz., departed this life Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Scottsdale,
Ariz.
She was born Friday, Jan. 3, 1913. She is survived by two children.
She was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College and completed graduate studies
at West Virginia University.
She was a former educator and social worker in Randolph County for more than 30
years, loved people, reading and traveling and was a Methodist by faith.
At the request of the family there was no visitation and a private service and
interment were held.

Burma Eljean Loughry Goff, 67, a resident of Parsons, departed this life early
Monday morning, Jan. 26, 2004, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. She had
been in her usual health and was stricken by a massive stroke on Friday.
She was born March 30, 1936, in Rowlesburg, the daughter of the late Clarence W.
Loughry and Bessie Mae Adams Loughry.
She was once married to Jimmie Goff, who preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1995.
Surviving are one daughter, Twila June Goff and husband, Charles Alan Hill, and
one grandson, Jacob Alan Hill, all of Baltimore, Md.
She was preceded in death by one infant brother.
She attended the schools of Rowlesburg and was a graduate of Rowlesburg High
School. She was a homemaker and a member of the Tucker County Senior Center and
a member of the Goldenaires Choir.
She was a member of Saint John’s United Methodist Church of Parsons. She was a
gardener and had a great love of flowers.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons

Clyde R. Goff
Clyde R. Goff, 70, of Vienna, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at
Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Goff was born April 23, 1933, in Coalton, the son of the late Everett C. and
Bertha Rowan Goff.
Mr. Goff was a shutter operator for Packard Electric for 28 years, retiring in
1991. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
His memberships included the Moose Lodge of Cortland, AmVets in Vienna, American
Legion and many other organizations.
He loved to hunt, fish, camp, travel and watch NASCAR.
He loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth, Jimmy, Robert and Sterling
Goff.
On June 19, 1960, he was married to Nancy Sampson Goff, who survives.
Surviving are one son, Jeffrey Goff and wife, Gail, of Vienna, Ohio; one sister,
Marie Temple of Elyria, Ohio; one brother, Lewis E. Goff of Ellamore; and two
grandsons, Mitchell Lee Goff and Jonathan Lee Goff.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Wallace & Wallace
Funeral Home in Arbovale where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The
Rev. David Rittenhouse will officiate and interment will be in the Arbovale

Kenneth M. Golden
Kenneth M. Golden, 78, of French Creek, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at the Louis
A. Johnson VA Medical Center following a long illness.
He was born Oct. 16, 1925, in Barbour County, the son of the late Burner and
Nellie Jones Golden.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose
Marie Price Golden; two sisters, Betty Banschbach and Geraldine Golden; and one
grandson, Mitchell Simpson.
He is survived by his second wife, Wanda Toler Golden; one daughter, Ann Lantz
of French Creek; one son, Mitch Golden of French Creek; four stepchildren, Janet
Ann Simpson of Beckley, Rita Mae Cook of Alabama, Jerry Herold Harvey of Lynco
and Jesse James Harvey of Bott; one sister, Adeline Ashcraft of Ohio; nine
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the Franklin Lodge No. 7 AF & AM and the Osiris Shrine
Temple. He was past president of the Upshur County Shrine Club. He belonged to
the Scottish Rite in Clarksburg and Wheeling and was a 32nd-degree Mason.
He belonged to the Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663. Mr. Golden
served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Golden was a Baptist by faith.
Friends will be received at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel from 4

Mary Golden
Mary Moore Johnson Golden, 89, a resident of Sand Run Road, Philippi, and a
former resident of Akron, Ohio, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 10, 2004, in
Nella’s Inc. at Crystal Springs.
She was born Jan. 18, 1914, at Meadowville, the daughter of the late Okey James
and Minnie Watkins Moore.
She was twice married. On June 14, 1931, she was united in marriage to Frank
Johnson, who preceded her in death in 1950. On June 28, 1958, she was united in
marriage to John A. Golden, who survives at Sand Run Road, Philippi.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law,
L.R. “Dick” Johnson and wife, Dessie Moss Johnson, of Sebring, Fla., and W.T.
“Bill” Johnson and wife, Della Constable Johnson, of Sand Run Road,
Philippi; 9 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, six brothers and one great-grandson.
Prior to her marriage she was a homemaker. She retired in 1968 as an electronic
assembler.
She was a member of Fairhaven Baptist Church in Akron, Ohio.

Philippi, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, the

Mary A. Gomez
Mary Ann Ballantyne Gomez, 52, of Alburquerque, N.M., departed this life Monday,
May 3, 2004, after a five-year illness with cancer.
She was born in Elkins in 1952, attended Elkins schools and graduated from
Elkins High School in 1970.
She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Steve; their two children, Alicia, a
recent graduate of the University of New Mexico, and Jesse, a college sophomore;
her father, John N. Ballantyne of Elkins; Peter, her brother, of Elkins; and
John David, her brother and family, of Frankford, Ky. Her mother, Marion
Ballantyne, passed away in 1992.
After graduation from college, Mary Ann first worked as a nurse for the U.S.
Indian Health Service at the Luguana Indian reservation in rural New Mexico.
In recent years, she was the administrator at one of the University of New
Mexico’s outreach health clinics in Alburquerque for low-income and refugee
patients.
For several years, Mary Ann participated as a nurse and later as a patient in
the cancer research program at the U of N.M.
Funeral services for Mary Ann Gomez were held in Alburquerque on May 8.

Allie Viola Goode
Allie Viola Goode, 92, a resident of Swisher’s Personal Care Home in Elkins,
passed away Friday, June 11, 2004, in the home.
She was born April 7, 1912, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Emerson Bennett
and Enda Bartlett Collett.
She was twice married, first to Ray Cross, who preceded her in death, and later
to Brooks Goode, who also preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, Darl Cross
of Ripley; three daughters, Mary Byrd Eades of St. Albans, Madeline Simmons of
Avon Park, Fla., and Verna Mae Price of Elkins; a brother, Edgar Collett of
Brooksville, Fla.; two sisters, Rita Ruth Herbert of Cumberland, Md., and Thelma
Bash of Zanesville, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were three brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Goode attended the schools of Randolph County and was a cook for the Seneca
Trail Restaurant for many years. She was an active member of the Otterbein
United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, member of the
Women of the Church and Circle No. 1 of the church. She was also a member of the
Randolph County Senior Center.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in
Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the funeral home

Virginia Goode
Virginia Lee Goode, 88, a resident of Nella’s Nursing Home in Elkins, departed
this life at 6:04 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had
been in failing health for quite some time and death was attributed to
respiratory failure.
She was born April 3, 1916, at Elkwater, the daughter of the late George
Randolph and Orpha Blanch Louk.
She was twice married, first to Cecil Parker Ross, who preceded her in death;
and second to Perry O.Goode, who also preceded her in death.
She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Evelyn Ross of Belington; seven
grandchildren, Perry Ross and wife, Cindy, of Belington, Kenneth Ross and wife,
Marge, of North Carolina, Stephanie Hinchman and husband, Garry, of Belington,
Evelyn F. Ross of Belington, Robin Ross of Mill Creek, Regina Warner of Elkins
and Mary Athey of East Liverpool, Ohio.
Also surviving are 19 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and
three sisters, Mable Metz of Spencer, Ola Cogar of Buckhannon and Gladys Briggs
of Washington.
In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by her only
son, Olan “Pete” Ross; one granddaughter, Lacreta L. Gingler; one
great-granddaughter, Belinda Ross; seven brothers and five sisters.
Mrs. Goode attended the schools of Randolph County and was a homemaker. She was
an avid CB operator and was known to her CB friends as “Little Mama.”
She was a Protestant by faith.

Glenvil M. Gooden
Glenvil M. “Glen” Gooden, 80, a former resident of 100 Tallman Ave., passed
away Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at 6:41 p.m. in Davis Memorial Hospital. He had been
in failing health but death was sudden and unexpected.
Born Jan. 3, 1924, in Adolph, he was the son of the late Albert Wilson and
Dorothy Fincham Gooden.
He was united in marriage on June 15, 1946, to the former Thelma Grace Powley,
who preceded him in death on June 9, 1975.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Frances Fitzwater and Tammy Fenton and
husband, Bob, all of Martinsburg; two sons, Howard Gooden Sr. and wife, Susie,
of Beckley, Rickey Glenn Gooden of Charleston; one brother, Ronald Gooden and
wife, Barbara, of Morgantown; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife were his mother-in-law, Mary
Powley; father-in-law, Herman Powley; one daughter, Candace Murphy; two sisters,
Helen Shannon and Lucille Jean Swecker; and two brothers, Burl and Hartsel
Gooden.
Glen was a coal miner and was formerly employed at Hickory Lick and various
other mines. He was also employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways in
road construction.
He was a veteran and served during World War II with the U.S. Army 31 Division
155 Reg. Co. K. Glen was wounded in combat on June 6, 1945, in Luzon, New
Guinea. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, Expert Marksman Medal
and the Good Conduct Medal.
At the request of the decreased, his remains were cremated. A memorial service

Effie Bennett Gordon, 91, of Circleville, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Grant
Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.
She was born Feb. 22, 1913, at Spruce Knob, the daughter of the late Moses R.
Bennett and Mary Ellen Kyle.
She was married to Harry Jay Gordon, who preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 2003.
She is survived by four daughters, Bonnie Anderson of Eagle Rock, Va., Shelby
Mullenax of Harman, Sandra Lambert of Seneca Rocks and Wilma Lambert of Stuart,
Va.; three sons, Randolph Gordon of Circleville, and Ronald Gordon and Donald
Gordon, both of Green Bank; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded by three half brothers and five half sisters.

Beatrice Goughnour
Beatrice Louise Goughnour, 84, of Johnstown, Pa., died April 9, 2004, in
Elkins.
She was born July 13, 1919, in Johnstown, Pa., the daughter of the late Charles
Sheldon and Phema Elvira Dively Creek.
On Jan. 15, 1943, she married Blaine Gordon Goughnour, who preceded her in
death.
She is survived by three sons, Timothy and Donna Goughnour of Thinking Spring,
Pa., Joel and Cindy Goughnour of Parsons and Sam and Amy Goughnour of Davis;
five grandchildren, Justin, Brett, Emily, Todd and Drew Goughnour; and two
great-grandchildren, Isaac and Jacob Goughnour.
She was preceded in death by one brother and was the last surviving member of
her immediate family.
Mrs. Goughnour retired from the Richland School District where she was employed
as the head cook.
She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.

Ocie Mae Powers Gould, 95, a resident of Wakeman, Ohio, for the past three
years, died Monday, April 19, 2004, in the Fiser-Titus Medical Center in
Norwalk, Ohio.
She was born June 25, 1908, in Kanawha Head, the daughter of the late Henry
Powers and Effie Waugh Powers.
Her husband, Elmer Gould, preceded her in death.
Surviving are four sons, Danny Gould of Buckhannon, Franklin Gould of
Lincolnton, Ga., Jimmy Gould of Cambridge, Ohio, and John Gould of Vermilion,
Ohio; one daughter, Rosalie Rice of Norwalk, Ohio; one sister, Zenna Gregory of
Hookstown, Pa.; one brother, Charles Powers of Buckhannon; and numerous
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Gary Gould, Verl Gould and Elmer Gould

Robert C. Gow
Robert C. Gow, M.D., 80, a resident of 119 Barron Ave., Elkins, passed away at
10:19 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 19, 1923, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late J. Steele and
Hazel Steel Gow.
On Aug. 1, 1947, in Meyersdale, Pa., he was married to the former Betty Floto,
who preceded him in death on Sept. 14, 2001.
Surviving are one son, Chris Gow and wife, Patty, of Elkins; one daughter,
Martha Gow Giddings and husband, Michael Hughes, of Snowshoe; three
grandchildren, Hannah Giddings, Heather Morici, and Danny Morici and wife,
Julie; and one great-granddaughter, Alexis Morici.
Dr. Gow was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in
1946 where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical society in
his junior year and was elected to the Sigma Xi honorary scientific society.
From 1946 until 1951 he served residencies in pediatrics and biochemistry at
Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was co-publicist of the Journal of
Biochemistry and Journal of Clinic Investigation.
From 1951 until 1954 he served in the U.S. Army, Far East Command, and was
awarded the Bronze Star.
In 1954 he was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, was elected a
Fellow of Academy of Pediatrics, and was in private practice from 1954 until
1960 in Butler, Pa.
From 1960 until 1988 he was employed at the Golden Clinic and Memorial General
Hospital in Elkins and at the Mountain Top Clinic at Thomas and Davis.
With Dr. Donald Burke he co-authored the first report of clinical use of the
Trivalent oral polio vaccine.
From 1992 until 2002, he served at Appalachian Mental Health Center.
His hobbies included model railroading, fishing, English bulldogs, reading,
classical music and birdwatching.
He was a Lutheran by faith.
Mr. Gow’s remains were cremated. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 28

Amy Gay Gower, 96, of HC 71, Box 162, Ellamore, died at 8:40 a.m. Monday,
Feb. 9, 2004, at her home.
She was born June 17, 1907, at Mt. Nebo, the daughter of the late Daniel Monroe
Williams and Matilda Bennett Williams.
On March 6, 1926, she was married to Allen Doyle Gower, who preceded her in
death on Aug. 1, 1966.
She is survived by one daughter, Vivian Ruth Gower of Ellamore; one son, Robert
Gower and wife, Shirley, of Ellamore; two granddaughters, Karen White and
husband, Stan, of Buckhannon and Melissa Hinkle and husband, Kevin, of
Morgantown; one grandson, Robert A. Gower of Ellamore; three
great-granddaughters, Amanda White and Ashley White, both of Buckhannon, and
Keely Hinkle of Morgantown; two great-grandsons, Cody Hinkle and Trevor Hinkle,
both of Morgantown; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clayton Williams, Jacob Williams
and George Williams; and two sisters, Alma Lantz and Myrtle Wentz.
She was a member of Wooley Chapel Church.

She was born Oct. 27, 1922, in Lewis County, the daughter of the late Dorsey
Cottrill and Muriel Cottrill.
On May 21, 1940, she married Walton S. Gower, who preceded her in death on Sept.
17, 1983.
Surviving are three sons, Norman R. Gower and wife, Wanda, of Glenville, Michael
D. Gower and wife, Debbie, of Buckhannon and Robert S. Gower Sr. and wife,
Gloria, of Reidsville, N.C.; one daughter, Judith Beighley and husband, David,
of Buckhannon; one sister, Mary Lurene Gower of Buckhannon; 10 grandchildren,
five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by Elsworth and Vesta Ward, who raised her; two
sisters, Wilma F. Cottrill and Polly A. Bailey; and two brothers, Edward C.
Cottrill and Earle D. Cottrill.
She was a homemaker and member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church and the
Oder of the Eastern Star of Clairmont, Va.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Poling-St. Clair
Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Jim Lang

Della Jane Gray, 55, a resident of the Country Club Road, Elkins, passed away
Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, in the Ruby Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 10, 1948, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ruth
Cowger Cool and Ottawa Cool of Webster Springs.
She was married to Alvin R. Gray.
Surviving are one daughter, Tanya Bolyard and husband, Rodney, of Elkins; two
brothers, Walter Cool of Clarksville, Ky., and Leo Cool of Littleton, Colo.;
four sisters, Pam Dalzell of Beckley, Sandra Henline and Cathy Cowger, both of
Webster Springs, and Ruth Morris of Summersville; and two grandsons, Kevin and
Daniel Gray, also survive.
Also preceding her in death were one son, Kevin Gray.
Mrs. Gray was employed as a registered nurse at Stonewall Jackson Hospital and
Nella’s Nursing Home.

Irene Grace Gray, 63, of 425 Catamaran Drive, Merritt Island, Fla., formerly of
Warren, Ohio, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, in Wuestahoff Hospital in Rockledge,
Fla.
She was born July 15, 1941, at Mouth of Seneca, the daughter of Otis Gary
Lambert, who died in 1988, and Gladys Susan Harper, who died in 2001.
On March 26, 1958, she was married to Paul M. Gray, who preceded her in death on
April 6, 2000.
Surviving are two sons, Harold Gray and Craig Gray, both of Merritt Island,
Fla.; five sisters, Katie Smith of Nashport, Ohio, Donna Goins of Newark, Ohio,
Betty Spradling of Charleston, Ethel Brinkley of Leonard Town, Md., and Mona
Kisamore of Seneca Rocks; five brothers, Keith Lambert of LaFayette Ind., Harper
Lambert of Newark, Ohio, Harold E. “Eddie” Lambert of Seneca Rocks, Carl
Lambert of St. Louisville, Ohio, and Johnny Lambert of Stuart, Va.; three
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was a homemaker.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Basagic Funeral Home

Jimmie Lee Green
Jimmie Lee Green, 58, of Buckhannon, passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at
St. Joseph’s Hospital.
He was born Feb. 7, 1946, in Buckhannon. Jimmie is the son of the Rev. S.L.
Green of Buckhannon and the late Augustine Green.
He was a Methodist by faith.
He is survived by his wife, Cheri Green, whom he married in 1968; his children,
Clint and Aimee Green of Buckhannon, Mindi and Jason McGrew of Buckhannon, John
Green of Buckhannon, and Shelli and Eric Lantz of Buckhannon. He is also
survived by four grandchildren, Jack McGrew, Mitchell McGrew, Madison Green and
Delaney Green.
He graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School in 1963. He obtained his
undergraduate degree in business education from West Virginia Wesleyan College
in 1968. He then received his master’s degree from West Virginia University.
He was a prominent businessman in the oil and coal industry. He also held prior
positions as teacher and principal in the education field. He was currently
self-employed in commercial real estate.
He was a member of the Elks, Moose and Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
He loved his wife, family and grandchildren dearly. He enjoyed playing cards
with buddies, watching sports and spending time with loved ones.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Poling-St. Clair
Funeral Home in Buckhannon with the Rev. Billie Scott Mick and the Rev. Donnie

John Charles Green
John Charles Green, 91, a former resident of Upshur County and a resident of
Colonial Place, Elkins, died Saturday, March 13, 2004, in Davis Memorial
Hospital.
He was born Aug. 17, 1912, the son of the late John Green and Margaret Shrout
Green.
On March 2, 1941, he was married to Marjorie Jack Green, who preceded him in
death on July 21, 1998.
Surviving are one daughter, Crystal Gregory of Danville, Va.; one sister, Mary
Margaret Hiner of Buckhannon; two granddaughters, Grete Hopkins and husband,
Shawn, of Danville, Va., and Rachel Lane of Danville, Va.; one grandson, Robert
Lane and wife, Carrie, of Roanoke, Va.; and one great-granddaughter, Alexandria
Hopkins of Danville, Va.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Green and Harry Green; and
one sister, Helen Green Smith.
Mr. Green was a well-known businessman and was the owner and operator of City
Lumber Co. for about 30 years. He was also active in many civic and professional
organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, West Virginia Strawberry
Festival, Lions Club, West Virginia Lumber Dealers Association and Franklin
Lodge No. 7 AF & AM.
A 1935 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, he was a member of the
Emeritus Club.
For 80 years he was a member of First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon.
Recently, as he fondly reflected on the beautiful architecture of the church and
thought of the members of its congregation, he said “I love you all.”
Friends will be received from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Poling-St. Clair
Funeral Home, where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Mark
Flynn and the Rev. Billee Scott Mick will officiate and interment will be in

Virginia B. Green
Virginia Bell Green, 90, a former resident of Valley Bend and a resident of the
Good Samaritan of Barbour County for the past two and one-half years, passed
away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at 5:15 a.m. in Davis Memorial Hospital where she
has been a patient for the past 10 days. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and

Virginia Green
Virginia Bell Green, 90, a former resident of Valley Bend and a resident of the
Barbour County Good Samaritan for the past two and a half years, passed away
Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at 5:15 a.m. in Davis Memorial Hospital where she had
been a patient for the past 10 days.
She was born May 12, 1914, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Ira Morgan
and Lena Lee Harris Kenney.
She was united in marriage to the former Amos Green, who preceded her in death
on Jan. 9, 1979.
She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Billie Jo Green of Elkins; three
grandsons, Roger Lee Green Jr. and David Ira Green, both of Elkins, and Harry
Joseph Green of Belington; one granddaughter, Christina Green of Florida.; one
brother, Ralph Kenney of Beverly; four great-grandchildren and several nieces
and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband was their only son, Roger
Lee Green, who passed away in 1997, and two brothers, Wilson and Thomas Kenney.
She was a former employee of Nella’s Nursing Home in Crystal Springs and a
member of the Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church. She loved going to yard sales
and flea markets. She will be greatly missed by her family.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home on Sunday from noon until 2
p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Frank Long, pastor of Mill Creek Memorial
Mission Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Brick Church Cemetery

Dennis R. Gregory
Dennis R. Gregory, 57, of the Arlington community, died Tuesday, Jan. 6,
2004, at his home.
He was born Oct. 27, 1946, in Canaan, the son of Roy Gregory of Buckhannon and
the late Vernie Friend Gregory.
Surviving are two brothers, Hubert Gregory of Adrian and Lee Roy Gregory of
Buckhannon; one sister, Waneta Hamner of Gaines; four children, Ronald Ross
Chastine and Jonathan Ray Chastine, both of Rock Cave, Dennis James Gregory of
Maryland and Donna Sue Gregory of North Carolina; and two grandsons.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Wilda Bowman; and two brothers, Ronald
Gregory and Edward Gregory.
He was a carpenter and a Methodist by faith.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Tomblyn Whitescarver
Funeral Chapel where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Harry

Roy E. Gregory
Roy E. Gregory, 96, of Buckhannon, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in the Louis A.
Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.
He was born April 20, 1908, in Canaan, the son of the late Wayett and Minnie
Sines Gregory.
On Dec. 12, 1929, he married Vernie Friend Gregory, who preceded him in death on
Sept. 6, 1988.
Surviving are two sons, Hubert Gregory of Adrian and LeRoy Gregory of
Buckhannon; one daughter, Waneta Hamner of Gaines; 30 grandchildren; several
great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carrie, of Grafton.
He was preceded in death by three sons, one daughter, three brothers and four
sisters.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and retired from Ralph Harper Lumber
in Rock Cave.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Whitescarver

Ellis Griffith
Ellis “Pete” Griffith, 74, a resident of Lorain, Ohio, since 1966, passed
away on Friday, April 16, 2004, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born May 14, 1929, in Randolph County, the son of the late Charles W. and
Marie Hyre Griffith.
He is survived by four brothers, Jennings, Glen and Sam Griffith, all of Lorain,
Ohio, and Donald Griffith of Elkins; one sister, Sue Knight of Stow, Ohio; two
daughters, Mary and Madena Griffith; one son, Doug Griffith; eight grandchildren
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were one brother, Charles R. Griffith; and two sisters,
Virginia Griffith and Jean Rowan.

Thomas J. Griffith
Thomas Joseph "Joe" Griffith, 74, of Route 1, Belington, died Tuesday
evening in the VA Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., following an extended
illness.
He was born March 7, 1930, in Belington, the son of the late Alfred John and
Julia Virginia Perchan Griffith.
His wife, Cleo Alma Crider Griffith, preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 1991.
Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Griffith Sharp of Versailles, Ohio; his
fiancee, Joann Nixon of Belington; five brothers, Alfred John Griffith Jr. of
Belington, Billy Gene Griffith of Chester, Ronald Lee Griffith of Waterford,
Pa., Jerry Lynn Griffith of Rockford, Ill., and Larry Dewayne Griffith of
Belington; five sisters, Mrs. Dominick (Edna) Ricottilli of Belington, Mrs.
Joseph (Joann) Toohey of Dorchester, Mass., Mrs. Stanley (Sarah Catherine)

Mr. Griffith retired from the U.S. Army with 21 years of service and was a
former employee of Hobart Brothers Manufacturing. He was a member of the West
Side United Methodist Church, Laurel Mountain Post 410 Veterans of Foreign Wars,
Randolph County Chapter 1 of Disabled American Veterans and H.W. Daniels Post 29
American Legion.

Peggy Jo Grubbs, 48, of Fayetteville, N.C., died Monday April 26, 2004, at Cape
Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C.
She was a native of Ellamore, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Rhoda
Petrice Stanton.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Fayetteville.
She is survived by one son, Steven Eric Grubbs of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter,
Samantha Grubbs Soncrant of Fayetteville, N.C.; three brothers, Bernard Stanton
of Triangle, Va., Christopher Stanton of Lillington, N.C., and Phillip Stanton
of Woodbridge, Va.; five sisters, Phyllis Lee of Norton, Bridget Sigman of
Lillington, N.C., Judy Glade of Fayetteville, N.C., Mary Graham of Fayetteville,
N.C., and Carolyn Moore of Gastonia, N.C.; and one grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick
Catholic Church in Fayetteville with Fr. Patrick Keane, celebrant, officiating.

Agnes Guzy
Agnes See Guzy, 89, a resident of Colonial Place and formerly of Elkwater,
passed away at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Colonial Place.
She was born Aug. 24, 1914, at Elkwater, the daughter of the late Joseph B. See
and Rosella Blaine Snyder See.
She was married to Andrew Peter Guzy, who preceded her in death in 1950.
She is survived by two sons, Andrew Ralph Guzy and wife, Mary Ellen, of
Reidsville, N.C., and David Keith Guzy and wife, Judy, of Luray, Va.; one
daughter, Rosann Ware and husband, Donald, of Elkins; and one brother, Woodrow
See of Elkwater.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, Barbara Hannig and husband, Bill, of
Fairmont, David Keith Guzy Jr. and wife, April, of Virginia, Angela Steele and
husband, Rick, of Westover, and Timothy Andrew Guzy and wife, Kate, of
Asheville, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Elijah Hannig of Fairmont and Mercedes
Guzy of Virginia; one nephew, Michael S. Hammer and wife, Joyce, of Tucson,
Ariz., and a special cousin, Mary Catherine Miller and husband, Fred, of Verona,
N.J.
Preceding her in death were three brothers, Frank, Paul and Ralph See; and one
sister, Dorothy Hammer.
Mrs. Guzy was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School. She worked as a
hairdresser, and from its beginning worked for Home Health Care in caring for
the elderly.
She was a member of the Head of the Valley Outpost of the Randolph County Senior
Center and was active in the Valley Head Library.
She was a founding member and served as a trustee for the Friendship Baptist
Church of Valley Head.
