Mildred L. Nazelrod
Mildred L. Nazelrod, 82, of Point Pleasant Road, Route 2, Belington, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, in Ruby Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 8, 1921, at Fairmont, a daughter of the late Charles and Madge (Nee Miller) Waltz.
On Nov. 10, 1941, she was married to Archie Ismal Nazelrod, who preceded her in death on April 19, 1993.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Nazelrod, Pt. Pleasant Road, Belington, and Larry L. Nazelrod, Yuma, Ariz.; one sister, Mary E. Porter, Hyndman, Pa.; one sister-in-law, Bernadine Waltz, in Maryland; one granddaughter, Christine Nazelrod, in Arizona.
Mrs. Nazelrod was a homemaker and a former clerk for Poling’s Store. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Laurel Mountain Post 410 VFW in Belington.
Honoring her wishes, Mrs. Nazelrod’s remains were cremated. A private committal is planned. The Stemple & Forman Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.  From 28 Apr 2003.

Gillispie Nazelrodt
Gillispie "Pete" Nazelrodt, 68, of Moorefield, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at the home of his daughter, Barbara E. Kimble in Petersburg.
Friends will be received at Schaeffer Funeral Home Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Friday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Whetzel Family Cemetery. From 8 Jan 2003.

Ramona I. Nease
Ramona Irene McGrew Nease, 72, of 3 Myrna St., Buckhannon, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at 9:30 p.m. at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown after an extended illness.
She was born July 4, 1930, in New Haven, the daughter of the late John Victor McGrew Sr. and the late Irene Beatrice Crooks McGrew.
She is survived by her children: two sons, William Conrad Nease and wife, Debbie, of Buffalo, and Marion Cornell Nease of Buckhannon; and one daughter, Martha Gaynelle "Gay" Jeffers and husband, Donald, of Bridgeport. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Andrea Renea Nease Markins and husband, Michael, of Hurricane, and Alaina Gaynelle Nease of Buffalo; one "loving" brother, John Victor McGrew Jr. and wife, Janet, of Buckhannon; plus many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, William Henry Nease, whom she married June 9, 1945; a daughter, Ramona Celestine Nease; and a special sister, Jane Elaine McGrew Lee.
She worked as a district manager for Avon Products Inc. of Newark, Del., for 35 years. She hired many Avon representatives and trained several managers. Many representatives and managers remained "friends" after her retirement, especially manager Janie Hitt of Burnsville.
She was a life member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of New Haven and sponsored "The Lutheran Hour" for many years on WBUC radio in Buckhannon.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home of Buckhannon. The funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor George Weirick officiating. Burial will follow in Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home, 95 S. Jackie Nelson
Jackie Nelson, EOCS, U.S. Navy retired, 72, a native of Harman and for the past 46 years a resident of Oxnard, Calif., departed this life Sunday evening, Nov. 30, 2003, in California.
He was born Saturday, June 6, 1931, at Harman, the eldest of five children of the late Jeffrey Nelson and Grace Harper Nelson.
Surviving are his wife, Petronila; one son, Jack; his stepchildren, Tony, Angela and Cherry; his brothers, Bob and wife, Elaine, and Harper Will; and his sisters, Barbara Jane and husband, Sonny, and Sondra and husband, Harold.
Jackie enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Feb. 12, 1952, at Baltimore, Md. In June 1952, he joined the proud ranks of the Navy Seabees and completed Equipment Operator School at Port Hueneme, Calif., in November 1952.
He proudly served the Navy and the Seabees during the Vietnam and Korean Wars. His tours have included Amphibious Construction Battalion One, Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Lake Mead Base at Las Vegas, Nev., Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Five, Naval Air Station in Miramar, Calif., Third Naval Construction Brigade and the 32nd Naval Construction Regiment.
Jackie was promoted to equipment operator chief in March 1964, and to equipment operator senior chief in December 1968. He transferred to the Fleet Reserve in July 1972.
He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of exceptional service to his country.
During his exemplary tours of duty, Jackie received numerous awards including the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Technical Service Honor Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, two awards, Good Conduct Medal, five awards, and Expert Rifleman Medal.
Jackie began his career with the city of Oxnard in November 1972. In June 1978, he earned an associate of science degree in construction technology and building construction inspection from Ventura College in Ventura, Calif. He became a duly registered construction inspector in the state of California in September 1980. Working for the city of Oxnard, he accepted positions of increasing responsibility, scope and challenge, working as a city construction inspector, as well as training the city of Oxnard Development Services Department inspectors. After 21 years of outstanding service to the city of Oxnard, Jackie retired on Dec. 21, 1993.

Agnes R. Nestor
Agnes Runner Nestor, 103, a resident of St. George, departed this life, Wednesday evening, July 9, 2003, at the home of her great-nephew, Preston Simmons of Parsons.
She was born Oct. 16, 1899, at Sinclair, in Preston County, a daughter of the late John Runner and Arthelia Braham.
During 1925, she was married to Worthy Nestor, who preceded her in death on July 7, 1967.
She is survived by one niece, Helen Simmons and husband, Clell of Parsons; one grandson, two great-granddaughters, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one son, Wallace Edison Nestor; one daughter, Mrs. Dempsey (Virginia) Haller; twin brothers, Dale and Dallas Runner; two sisters, Vada Evans and Marie Corbin; and one granddaughter.
She attended the St. George Academy, the No. 6 School at Macedonia. She was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College with a teaching certificate. During the year 1919, she had taught at various schools in Tucker County until her marriage. During World War II, Agnes and her husband, Worthy, moved to Baltimore, to work for the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company. They returned to their home in Tucker County. She attended the Macedonia Church and the Pifer Mountain Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer for the Macedonia Church for many years. She wrote the weekly column for the Parsons Advocate for 70 years. She was an avid gardener and she loved her flowers.
The family will receive friends at the Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Saturday at 1 p.m. Pastor Pat Cassidy will officiate and interment will follow at Macedonia Cemetery at Macedonia. The Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Agnes Runner Nestor.  From 11 Jul 2003. 

Delmer C. Nestor
Delmer C. Nestor, 89, a resident of Philippi, passed away Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, in the Broaddus Hospital Extended Care Unit.
He was born Sept. 8, 1914, at Nestorville, the son of the late C.F. and Lula Stemple Nestor.
He was united in marriage in 1938 to the former Neva Sturm, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa G. Kern and husband, Dr. Roy M. Kern, Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Matthew Kern and wife, Julie, Atlanta, Ga., and Lori Wittschen and husband, Mark, of Orlando, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Hayden Kern and Kaitlyn Kern, both of Atlanta, Ga.; and Madeline Wittschen, Orlando, Fla.; and three brothers, Carl Nestor of Philippi, Murl Nestor of Washington Court House, Ohio, and Dale Nestor of Poolsville, Md.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Delmer graduated from Philippi High School with the class of 1934. He graduated from Alderson-Broaddus College in 1944 with a bachelor of arts degree in secondary education.
His teaching career was interrupted in 1944 when he entered the U.S. Navy. He served two years as director of the occupational therapy wing of the U.S. Naval Hospital in Norman, Okla.
He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a master’s degree in guidance and counseling. He attended the University of Kentucky and the University of West Virginia.
Delmer was very proud to have spent 37 years in the school system of Barbour County as a teacher in one-room schools, as a coach of basketball and baseball at Kasson High School and as assistant superintendent of schools for 14 years.
He was very active in church and civic organizations. He was a lifelong member of the Nestorville United Methodist Church and was president of the Barbour County Council of Churches for 10 years.
He submitted his writings, “Strength of the Week,” to the Barbour Democrat for 40-some years.
He served as president of the senior citizens for 10 years.
He was elected president of the Philippi Kiwanis Club in 1972 but never served because of a serious heart attack.
He was an elected member of Philippi City Council for 21 years.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, after 7 p.m. today. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gary Rapking officiating. The eulogy will be given by Jean Fenstermacher. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home service.  From 13 Sep 2003.

Otto K. Nestor
Otto K. Nestor, 94, a resident of Kasson community, Route 1, Moatsville, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in the Davis Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 1, 1909, at Colebank in Preston County, the son of the late Alex Jennings and Laura May Campbell Nestor.
On Jan. 24, 1934, he married the former Alga Mae Howdershelt, who preceded him in death on July 27, 1984. On Aug. 14, 1985, he married the former Anna Viola Watring Shaffer, who preceded him in death on March 17, 1987.
Survivors include four nieces, Vivian Nestor Utterback of Moatsville, Ruth Ann Wolfe Carson of Winterville, N.C., Carol Wolfe Gill of White Plains, Md., Dorothy Wolf of Winston-Salem, N.C., Ethel Wolfe Bourne of Virginia; one nephew, Howard Dale Wolfe of Fairfax, Va.; two stepsons, Willard Shaffer of Massillon, Ohio, and Denver Shaffer of Belington; and a special friend, Hazel B. Balducci of Belington.
He was also preceded in death by five sisters, Florence Wolfe, Mabel Carl, Nancy Wolfe, Anna Nestor and Hazel B. Wolfe; and by three brothers, George Howard Nestor, John G. Nestor and an infant brother.
Mr. Nestor was a lifelong farmer and was a former saw mill operator. He was a member of the Kasson United Methodist Church and a former member of the Kasson Ruritan Club.
Friends may call at the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday, when funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Newcomb
Kenneth Cecil “K.C.” Newcomb, 81, of Heartland Nursing in Nutter Fort, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.
He was born May 31, 1922, in Buckhannon, the son of the late Albert Cecil Newcomb and Bessie G. Townsend Newcomb.
On Dec. 7, 1946, he married Anita J. Hall Newcomb, who survives in Bridgeport.
Also surviving are three sons, Rickland Newcomb and wife, Anna, of Bridgeport, Stephen Newcomb and wife, Ginger, of Goldsboro, N.C., and Gregory Newcomb and wife, Karen, of New Bern, N.C.; three grandsons, Jared Newcomb, Mark Newcomb and Justin Newcomb; two granddaughters, Laura Newcomb and Brandi Nelson; one great-granddaughter, Sara Nelson; and one niece, Sandra Crow.
He was preceded in death by one half sister, Vonda Virginia Curry.
He was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II.
He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Hall and the Masonic Bigelow Lodge 52 AF & AM in Philippi.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. He will be moved to the Bethany Baptist Church on Wednesday for visitation from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Robert Poling will officiate and interment will follow in the Bethany Cemetery at Hall.  From 16 Sep 2003.

Roger C. Newcome
Roger Carl Newcome, 55, of 14 Cleveland Ave., Buckhannon, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at 11:40 a.m. in Nella’s Nursing Home in Crystal Springs.
He was born Nov. 23, 1947, at Buckhannon, a son of Zylpha McCue Newcome, who survives at Red Knob, and the late Carl Newcome.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three sons, Chad Newcome and wife, Sara, Ellamore, Brian Newcome and wife, Lori, Buckhannon, and Matthew Newcome, Huntington; one sister, Betty Gayle Zickefoose and husband, Ed, Strongsville, Ohio; two grandsons, Dylan Newcome and Brandon Newcome, both of Ellamore; two granddaughters, Brittanie Newcome and Brooke Newcome, both of Buckhannon; one niece, four nieces and a special friend and caregiver, Norma Wayts.
Mr. Newcome worked as a store manager for Krogers and Food Lion until his retirement in 1995. He was a fine golfer and enjoyed all sports, most recently watching and counting deer and turkey.
Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Sunday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Holly J. Mary M. Newland
Mary Marvina Weiner Newland, 38, of Horseshoe Run, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at her home.
She was born July 13, 1964, in Whitmer, a daughter of Mary Harper Vandevander Delaney and the late Jeff Vandevander.
She was a homemaker and a Pentecostal.
She is also survived by her stepfather, Robert Delaney; one son, Anthony Newland of Horseshoe Run; one brother, Jeffie Vandevander of Horseshoe Run; three sisters, Angela Knapp and Bernice Byrd, both of Rowlesburg, and Felicia Harper of Horseshoe Run; one stepbrother, Robbie Delaney of Horseshoe Run; one stepsister, Denise Rodriguez, Bowie, Md.; one niece, Mindy Sigley; and two nephews, Zack Sigley and Marcus Knapp.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Darren Harper; and maternal grandparents, Oscar and Mary Harper.
Friends were received at the Browning Funeral Home, Burke Chapel, in Rowlesburg from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Today she will be moved to the Whitmer United Methodist Church to lie in state from noon until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Orville Davis officiated and interment will follow in the Whitmer Cemetery.  From 23 Jun 2003.

Gilford Nolan
Gilford Nolan, 86, of Crawford, passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at the home of his daughter, Bonnie Johnson, in Harwood, Md., after a long illness.
He was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Lewis County, the son of the late Albert Nolan and Ellen Collins Nolan.
He was a retired stationary engineer for Maryland Cup Co. in Baltimore, Md., and a member of the Engo Community Church in Crawford.
He is survived by his wife, Oma Fisher Nolan, whom he married on Oct. 27, 1945; three daughters, Bonnie Johnson and husband, Zeb, of Harwood, Md., Zola Hilliard of Crawford, and Louise Dowell and husband, James, of Buckhannon; three sons, James Nolan and wife, Dolly, of Crawford, Leonard Nolan of Bowie and Joe Nolan and wife, Florence, of Falling Waters; two sisters, Lennett Bonnett of Windham, Ohio, and Grace Bailey of Weston; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, one daughter, three brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home in Flatwoods. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Donald Elmer officiating. Burial will be in Flatwoods.  From 17 Dec 2003.

Gladys C. Norman
Gladys Charlotte “Sue” Norman, 52, of Route 1, Box 75, Volga, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
She was born June 27, 1950, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Elbert Austin and Virginia Gladys Moore Smith.
On Oct. 27, 1964, she married Jimmie Lee Norman, who survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Donna Sue Anderson and husband, Rodney, Rock Cave, Tammy Darlene Norman, Buckhannon, Stella Jane Howard and husband, Michael, Volga, and Peggy Lynn Alexander and husband, Wade, Herndon, Va.; one son, Jimmie Lee Norman and wife, Angie, Buckhannon; 10 brothers, Kenneth Smith, Davy Smith, Paul Smith, James Smith, Leonard Smith, Richard Smith, Roger Smith, Daniel Smith, Timothy Smith and Thomas Smith; four sisters, Mary DeBarr, Katherine Bedell, Melinda Brown and Lisa Whaley; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jerry Murrell officiating. Interment will follow in Buckhannon Memorial Park in Buckhannon.  From 5 Jun 2003.

Forrest Nottingham
Forrest Jackson Nottingham, born March 3, 1914, died April 26, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins after a short illness.
A lifelong resident of Boyer Siding in Durbin, born and raised. He lived all his life in his family home place. He went to school in the multi-grade, one-room school house at the siding. He also helped to build the gravel road that goes down the river when he was 12 years old, making it easier for the people who lived in Boyer Siding to get to Durbin. He worked his team of horses clearing and plowing much of the open acres of what is now the Nottingham Farm. He was also a horse ferrier and broke horses to working teams for farm use. He used a tractor in his later years while farming. He worked till two years ago, doing his farm work and daily errands to town.
He was one of 13 children. His parents were the late Austin Amos Nottingham and the late Alice Mary Stone.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dorothy Mae Wagner Nottingham, a son, Glen Clarance Nottingham, and a daughter-in-law, Donean Nottingham, all of Durbin. Also surviving are one brother, Ellis Daniel Nottingham of Durbin, and one sister, Wilma Eliza LeMasters of Piscataway, N.J.
He was preceded in death by a wife, Irene Zula Varner; a son, Lewis Jackson Nottingham; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. William Vandevender officiating. Robert Nowington Jr.
Robert K. Nowington Jr., 43, of Renny’s Mobile Village, Buckhannon, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born March 2, 1960, in West Palm Beach, Fla., a son of Joyce Nickels Howington Caynor, who survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are one brother, David Keith Howington and wife, Anne, Camerella, Calif.; two half brothers, James Curtis Howington and family of Florida, and Roy Kenneth Howington and family of Florida; stepmother, Marion Cole Howington and stepfamily, including Maribeth Cole of Florida; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was a construction worker and was employed by Gary Woody Construction. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Christian by faith.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Davis officiating.  From 25 Jul 2003.
