Edith L. Hall
Edith L. Knicely Hall, 87, of Diana, died Friday, June 6, 2003, in Webster Continuous Care in Cowen following an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 22, 1915, in Cleveland, a daughter of the late James Knicely and Elizabeth Mitchell Knicely.
She married Hayward Hall, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Gerald Hall and Mark Hall, both of Diana; one daughter, Doris Nocida of Sistersville; one brother, Herbert Knicely of Maysville; one sister, Elnora Morris of Bentree; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Lela M. Hall, Bessie Hanshaw, Irene Knicely, Lena B. Hall and Norma J. Green; and a brother, Howard Knicely.
She was a homemaker. She was a lifelong resident of Webster County. She was a member of the Holly River Baptist Church in Diana, where she sang in the church choir. She enjoyed gardening and quilting.
Friends will be received at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Conrad Tenney of French Creek officiating. Interment will follow in the West Virginia Memorial Gardens at Calvin.  From 9 Jun 2003.

Leah Bell Heckel Hammer, 85, a former resident of Valley Bend, passed away Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, in Virginia Beach, Va.

Leah Hammer
Leah Bell Heckel Hammer, 85, from Valley Bend died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, in Virginia Beach, Va.
Leah will be remembered for her strength, her sense of humor and her spirit. She was a loving mother and grandmother to six children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She enjoyed an especially close relationship with her brother and two sisters. Her independent nature and compassion for others will live on in all of us and sustain us. In her final hours, Leah was surrounded by her loved ones and comforted by the staff at Sentara Leigh Hospital and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
While she resided in Hopewell, Va., for several years, most of Leah’s life was lived surrounded by the mountains she loved in West Virginia. She returns home to those mountains to rest. Her two husbands, August Amiel Heckel and Robert Earl Hammer, rest there as well.
Leah’s survivors include her son, Father Guerrick OCS of Mepkin Abbey, Moncks Corner, S.C., her son, Charles, his wife, Sandy, a grandson, Chris, his wife, Jackie, a granddaughter, Lisa, her husband, Steve, and their children, Madison and Jake of Ontario, Canada, a son, Michael of Valley Bend, a daughter, Linda, her husband, Michael and their children Nathan and Cara of Chesapeake, Va., a son, John, his wife, Linda and their children Erich and Alison of Chesapeake, Va., a daughter, Susan, her husband, Warren and their children Aaron, Bryan and Leah of Palmyra, Va., a sister, Leta Cox of Valley Bend, a brother, Howard Bell, his wife, Ethelyn of Valley Bend, a sister, Bobbie Davies, her husband, Joe of Elkins, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Monday, Mrs. Hammer will be moved to St. Brendan Catholic Church where the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Father Guerrick and Father William Anderson will be the celebrants and interment will follow in St. Brendan Cemetery. Dortha Hammonds
Dortha Mae Hammonds, 69, a former resident of Adolph and more recently a resident of the Tygarts Valley Apartments in Elkins, went to be with the Lord at 11:25 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She passed away following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Sept. 9, 1934, at Adolph, she was the daughter of the late Grover and Mellie Mae Johnson Hammonds.
On Sept. 13, 1949, she was united in marriage to Coleman Fincham, who survives at Cassity.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mellie Currence and husband, Richard, of French Creek and Becky Currence and husband, Kevin, of Cassity; and one son, Tim Fincham of Mill Creek.
In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by eight grandchildren, Melissa Rehak and husband, Kurt, of Conawingo, Md., Michelle, Michael and Marsha Currence, all of Baltimore, Md., and Karah, Khristopher, Keith and Keian Currence, all of Cassity; one sister, Juanita “Bunt” Arbogast of Adolph; two sisters-in-law, Verna Hammonds of Shadyside, Ohio, and Ginny Hammonds of Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents were one daughter, Norma Jean Fincham; one grandson, Kevin Currence II; three brothers, Roy, Dale and Paul Hammonds; and one sister, Pauline Hammonds Taylor.
Dortha was a homemaker and an in-home care attendant for various families in the Randolph County area.
She was a member of the Ambassador Baptist Church, where she remained very active until her illness. She was a devout Christian and spread his Word with love. Dortha loved painting, drawing, traveling and cooking. She attended the Adolph schools and Tygarts Valley High School.
Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel today after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Pastor Mike House of the Ambassador Baptist Church will officiate. Laura Hammons
Mrs. Laura Hammons, 85, a resident of 122 Third St. in Belington and more recently a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, departed this life at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the center. She had been in declining health for quite sometime.
She was born May 11, 1918, at Belington, a daughter of the late Worthington and Leona Grace Simon Poling.
She was three times married: first to Bradford Moore, second to Bertsel Moore and third to Grover C. Hammons, who all have preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Lonnie L. Moore Sr. and wife, Linda, of Belington, and Hobert C. Moore of Baltimore, Md.; nine stepchildren, Frieda A. Bleicke, Larada Gulick, Okarita Glen, Melvin Hammons, David Lee Hammons, Linda Reiss, Sue Wells, June Yoder and Genevieve Wilson; two sisters, Alda Arlene Stauffer and Winnie "Katie" Kittle; one brother, Arnold Goff Poling; seven grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Flossie A. Woodside; one stepson, Forest McOlen "Dick" Moore; and four brothers, Howard W., Reuben G., Forrest W. and Harold S. Poling.
Mrs. Hammons attended the schools of Barbour County, was a homemaker and was a member of the Belington Church of Christ.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, and on Tuesday until noon. She will then be moved to the Belington Church of Christ where friends may call from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour, when services will be conducted with Evangelist Michael Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery at Belington. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Mountain Hospice, 1410 Crim Ave., Belington, W.Va. 26250. Bernice T. Hamner
Bernice T. Hamner, 98, a resident of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
She was born June 13, 1905, in Sago, the daughter of the late Anthony L. Tenney and Bertha Ours Tenney.

Her husband, Lyle A. Hamner, preceded her in death on June 20, 1940.
Surviving are three daughters, Virginia L. Allman of Wellsburg, Wilma Phillips and husband, John F., of French Creek, and Gloria R. Hamner of Buckhannon; one brother, Anthony L. Tenney Jr. of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters, Lillian O’Karen of Chicago, Ill., and Hazel Tenney of Tallmansville; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, four brothers, two sisters and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Hamner was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and the Extension Homemakers’ Club.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. David Fisher will officiate and interment will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon.   From 29 Aug 2003.

French L. Hamner
French L. Hamner, 78, of HC 78, Rock Cave, died Saturday, June 14, 2003.
He was born July 15, 1924, at Gaines, a son of the late Lloyd and Cosbie Strader Hamner.
He was married in Buckhannon in 1947, to Waneta Mae Gregory, who survives.
Also surviving are five sons, Richard, Allen, Paul, Stanley and Steve Hamner, all of Gaines; three daughters, Nelva Lou Teter of Walkersville, Julia Rose Hamner and Lesa Faye Perrine, both of Gaines; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Martha Daniels and Juanita Post, both of Buckhannon.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry Hamner, Max Hamner and Harry Hamner; three sisters, Bertha Marley, Ruth Long and Geneva Arnold; two sons, Phillip Lloyd and Michael John Hamner; and one daughter, Minnie Mae Hamner.
Mr. Hamner was a carpenter and cabinet maker. He was a member of Salem Ridge United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received at Robert M. Vincent Funeral Home in French Creek from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Charlene Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. the funeral hour. Robert M. Russell L. Hamner
Russell “Boz” Lewis Hamner, 68, of Thomas, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2003, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 17, 1934, in Hambleton, a son of the late Russell Lewis Hamner and Florence M. Sturms Pase.
He is survived by his first wife, Barbara A. Fink Shepard and his current wife, Sheila J. Bennett Hamner, Thomas. They were married Feb. 20, 1969.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael Hamner, Thomas, and Steven and Karen Hamner, Bel-Alton, Md.; three daughters, Patricia and James Harman, Harman, Pamela Shepard, Newport News, Va., and Tracy Hamner, Thomas; three brothers, James Pase, Thomas, Duane Pase, Clinton, Md., and David H. Pase, Thomas; two sisters, Joanne Harper, Thomas, and Eloise Udovich, Thomas; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Carole Zorb; one brother, Donald Pase; and one nephew, David H. Pase Jr.
Mr. Hamner was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked as a construction foreman for Interstate Engineers and retired as a plant foreman from Laurel Run Mining Co. in 1990. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aries 936 — Davis, and American Legion, Thomas, Mt. Top Hunting Club and Buffalo Hunting Club.

Arnie D. Hamner
Arnie Doris Wyatt Hamner, 82, died Feb. 3, 2003, at 7:47 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
She was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Dandy, N.C., a daughter of the late Ambrose Franklin Wyatt and Flossie Danford Phillips Wyatt.
She was married on April 1, 1939, to George Burr Hamner, who preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1990.
She is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Luella Hamner, Gassaway, Tom and Janet Hamner, Indian Camp, Roger and Pat Hamner, Abbot Road, Paul and Liz Hamner, Slab Camp Community, and Junior and Debbie Hamner, Glady Fork community; and two daughters, Mrs. Hearlon (Dorothy) Radcliff, Clarksburg Road, and Mrs. Bill (Linda) Reaser, Harrisville. She is survived by 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one step great-grandson.
She is survived by one sister, Dollie Hiner, Mentor, Ohio; and two brothers, Frank Wyatt, Madison, Ohio, and George Wyatt, also of Ohio.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer Wyatt, Russell Wyatt and Gwen Wyatt; and four sisters, May Cogar, Carrie Gregory, Ruby Hamrick and Hazel Brown.
Mrs. Hamner was a homemaker for many years and a Baptist by faith.
Family will receive friends at Robert M. Vincent Funeral Home, French Creek Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. David Jessie and the Rev. Wease Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Rock Cave Cemetery.  From 5 Feb 2003.

Katherine Hamrick
Katherine Elizabeth Hamrick, 87, of Thomas, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home.
She was born May 27, 1915, in Thomas, a daughter of the late Alonzo Tecumseh and Florence Louise Coburn Shoemaker.
On July 5, 1941, she married Glen Hamrick, who preceded her in death in 1973.
One infant son, three brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Jane and Tom DiBacco of Hambleton; two sons, Gary Hamrick of Surry, Va., and Alan Hamrick and wife, Judi Kennedy, of Middlebourne; three brothers, Harold "Jiggs" Shoemaker, a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Thomas, Jack and wife, Annabelle Shoemaker, of Morgantown, and Richard "Dick" and wife, Eunice Shoemaker, of Barberton, Ohio; one sister, Eleanor Kuski of Thomas; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hamrick was a graduate of Thomas High School with the class of 1933. She was a homemaker and a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home Saturday from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Dennis G. Shoemaker will officiate. Mrs. Hamrick’s remains will be cremated and interred in Rose Hill Cemetery at a later date. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.   From 7 Feb 2003. 

Nolan R. Hamrick
Nolan Ralph Hamrick, 94, a resident of 2837 Pike St., Parkersburg, formerly of Route 6, the Tennerton community, Buckhannon, departed this life Monday, April 28, 2003.
He was born Feb. 27, 1909, in Webster County, the son of the late Elick and Minnie Wilson Hamrick.
On March 1, 1935, he married Maude L. Salisbury Hamrick, who preceded him in death on May 3, 1996.
Surviving are three daughters, Dora G. Winkler and husband, Blaine, of Covenington, Ky., Kathleen L. Reed of Parkersburg, and Portia M. Fortney of Buckhannon; one son, Bryan E. Hamrick of Parkersburg; three grandsons and four granddaughters, eight great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters and two stepgreat-granddaughters.
One sister, Jessie Osburn of Webster Springs, survives.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arlen Hamrick, Orden Hamrick and Owen Hamrick; and six sisters, Leo Gregory, Velva Armentrout, Lela Harris, Genevieve Miller, Ina Osburn and Ruth Davis.
Mr. Hamrick was a coal miner and worked for Pardee and Curtin No. 4 mine in Webster County. He had been injured in a mining accident in 1948.
He loved having beautiful flower gardens and had learned the art of crocheting, which he enjoyed very much.
He was a Methodist by faith and attended many churches.
Friends will be received today from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Frank Long officiating. Ronald K. Hamrick
Ronald Kent Hamrick, 69, of Gainesville, Fla., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at his home.
He was born in Webster Springs on April 30, 1934, the son of the late Odie Lee and Monna Grace Chipps Hamrick.
He was a graduate of Webster Springs High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy for eight years and the U.S. Air Force for eight years.
He was a bookkeeper for Hogan’s Heroes in Gainesville, Fla.
He was a Methodist by faith.
He is survived by three sons, Ronald “Chip” Hamrick, and Mark Hamrick of Camarillo, Calif., and Jeffrey Hamrick of Texas; four sisters, Betty Smith of Fairmont, Mrs. Paul (Anne) Sutch of Mentor, Ohio, Mrs. John (Dixie) Kennedy and Vera Marple of Buckhannon; five grandchildren and 10 nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at Heavener Cemetery in Buckhannon.  From 6 Dec 2003.

Virginia Hamrick
Virginia Mary Roy Hamrick, 68, of Elkins, passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born April 6, 1935, in Onego, the daughter of the late Starr M. and Elta Virginia Kerens Roy.
On Dec. 15, 1951, in Elkins, she was married to Raymond W. Hamrick, who survives in Elkins. They had been married for 51 years.
Also surviving are a son, Raymond R. “Randy” Hamrick and wife, Kim, of Belington; two daughters, Suzanne D. Cain and husband, Mark, of Elkins and Brenda L. Riggleman and husband, Larry, of Beverly; and one brother, Starr Junior Roy of Elkins. Five grandchildren, Jared Cain, Austin and Dalton Hamrick, and Sarah and Haleigh Riggleman, also survive.
Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Lindsey, Bruce, Dempsey and Luther Roy; and three sisters, Marie Roy, Erma Woods and Kathryn Roy.
Mrs. Hamrick was a homemaker and attended the Elkins Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed listening to gospel music, evening walks and spending quality time with her family.

Willagene Hamrick
Willagene E. Hamrick, 68, a resident of the Poe Run community, passed away Tuesday evening, April 22, 2003, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
She was born April 30, 1934, in Randolph County, the daughter of the late Henry H. and Vie Ellen Isner Daniels.
She was formerly married to Charles Poulson.
On June 21, 1971, she married Arthur F. Hamrick, who preceded her in death on May 26, 1985.
She is survived by one son, John Poulson, of Elkins; three stepsons, Arthur G. Hamrick of Elkins, Wirt Hamrick of Idaho and Bill Hamrick; three stepdaughters, Mary Jane Williams of Wheeling, Frances Crickard of Elkins and Susan Miller of Maryland; five brothers, Ralph Daniels, Dale Daniels and John Daniels, all of Beverly, Charlie Daniels of Beach City, Ohio, and Tom Daniels of Elkins; and two sisters, Marie Kittle of Elkins and Millie Thompson of Maryland.
Three sisters preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hamrick was a graduate of Beverly High School and a was a homemaker.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Beverly Cemetery with Pastor Mark Epperson officiating. Interment will follow. The Tomblyn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Willagene E. Hamrick.   From 25 Apr 2003.

Reta Haney
Reta Haney, 89, of Audra Road, Route 1, Belington, passed away at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2003, at her home following an extended illness.
She was born July 27, 1913, at Mabie in Randolph County, the daughter of the late Mick and Carrie Hanifan Rowan.
On March 23, 1940, she was married to Douglas Patrick Haney, who preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1989.
Surviving are one son, Jerry Lee Haney and wife, Nancy, Philippi; one daughter, Reta Jean Nestor and husband, Roger, Belington; four grandchildren, Traci Haney, Philippi, Amy Baker and husband, Vic, Morgantown, Jared Nestor and wife, Kim, Belington, and Stephanie Nestor, at student at West Virginia University; and one great-granddaughter, Gabrielle Haney Baker.
Mrs. Haney was also preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Rowan; and by three brothers, Carl Rowan, Richard Rowan and Ernest Rowan.
Mrs. Haney was a retired public school teacher. She was a member of the Belington Chapter 68 Order of the Eastern Star and the Barbour County Associated of Retired School Employees.
She was a member of the Rowan United Methodist Church and attended the Concord United Methodist Church.
Friends may call at the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel in Belington from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday, when funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jim Tallman and Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Interment will follow in the Belington Fraternal Cemetery. Loretta S. Hanifan
Loretta Sue Koon Hanifan, 65, of Buckhannon, the Tennerton community, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at her home.
She was born April 13, 1937, at Gould, a daughter of the late Dave Bosley and Bonita Tenney Bosley Hyre, who survives in Buckhannon.
She was married twice. First, she married Vernon Roy Koon, who preceded her in death. Second, she married Louis F. Hanifan, who survives in Woodbridge, Va.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by a son, Jeff Hanifan, Buckhannon; two daughters, Debra Koon Dean, Buckhannon, and Wendy Koon Woofter, Three Lick Road, Buckhannon; two stepchildren, Cory Phillip Hanifan and Robinetta Alona Hanifan, both of Woodbridge, Va.; five grandchildren, Howard Dean, Brianna Woofter, Stephanie Woofter, Joshua Dean and Shania Dean; and two stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Helen Potts of Bridgeport and Karen Smith of Rootstown, Ohio; and a brother, Ronnie Bosley of Virginia Beach, Va.
She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Vernon Koon, and a sister, Roseann Mearns Kiefer.
Mrs. Hanifan was a homemaker and attended the Adrian United Methodist Church where she was the song leader and piano player.

Loyal Hanlin
Loyal Hanlin, 86, a resident of 300 Pike St., Elkins, passed away Monday, March 17, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Pocahontas County, a son of the late C.V. and Birtie Craig Hanlin.
On Oct. 14, 1946, at Staunton, Va., he was married to Janet Crickard Hanlin, who preceded him in death on Feb. 16, 2001.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Eloise Crickard Caroland, Georgetown, Ky.; brothers-in-law, Donald Sirk of Clarksburg, and Richard Crickard of Tempe, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hanlin was a graduate of Elkins High School in 1934, where he played football and was captain of the track team. He worked for Western Maryland Railroad for two years and served in the Army Air Force from 1943 until 1946 in the Pacific Theatre. For the next 45 years, he worked in plumbing and heating in the Elkins area. The Hanlin’s were active in western square dancing for 25 years. He was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Glen G. Hannah
Glen G. Hannah, 76, a resident of Route 1, Beverly, the East Dailey community, passed away at 10:50 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, at his home.
He was born June 27, 1927, at Beverly, a son of the late Roy William and Lena Riggleman Hannah.
On April 9, 1950, at the First United Methodist Church in Elkins, he was married to Eula Kenney Hannah, who survives at East Dailey.
Also surviving are two sons, Gary Glen Hannah of Beverly, and Ronald Neil Hannah and wife, Crystal Dawn, of Beverly; a daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Debra Jo) Butcher of Beverly; and four grandchildren, Matthew Alan Morgan Butcher, Andrew Wade Wilson Butcher, Elizabeth Hannah Jo Butcher and Kyle Roy Brison Hannah.
Mr. Hannah was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by three brothers, John L. Hannah, Frank W. Hannah and Ray A. Hannah.
Mr. Hannah attended the schools of Randolph County. He was a past member of the Dailey Ruritan Club and the Upper Valley Ruritan Club. He was a member of Mountaineer Chapter Izaak Walton League and the Randolph County Senior Center and attended the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. He was employed as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator for the West Virginia Department of Highways. After his retirement in 1989, he worked part-time for Reckart Equipment Co. for 11 years and was employed part-time by the Tygart Valley Sanitation Company at Dailey at the time of his illness and death.

Gail Hardy Jr.
Gail "Junior" Hardy Jr., 58, of River Road, Clarksburg, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, following an extended illness.
Mr. Hardy was a retired heavy equipment operator with Petitto Brothers.
He was born in Clarksburg on April 28, 1944, a son of the late Gail and Rosemary Barker Hardy.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Yvonne Fitzwater Hardy; one daughter, Stephanie Yvonne Hardy Reed; two grandsons, Andrew Michael and Cody Matthew Reed; two brothers, Leroy Hardy and wife, Nancy, Quiet Dell, and Tom Hardy, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Lou Grimes and Patty Wilford, both of Clarksburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hardy was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1962-1965. He was a member of the United Mine Workers, Ohio Gamefoal Breeders Association, and the AARP. He was also a life member of Meuse Argonne Post 573 VFW, a life member of the DAV, a life member of Roy E. Parrish Post 13 American Legion, Clarksburg Aerie No. 2353 Fraternal Order of Eagles, Governor of Clarksburg Lodge 52 Loyal Order of Moose, Moose International 5 Club, President of District 2 Moose Association and Monongahela Valley Moose Legion 52.

Harold S. Hardman
Harold S. Hardman, 73, a resident of Navarre, Ohio, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Doctors Hospital in Navarre following a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 9, 1929, in French Creek, where he resided most of his life, and was the son of the late Oren Lee and Mary Louise See Hardman.
Surviving are one sister, Alice P. Wilson of Navarre, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, William Hardman, Ralph “Mike” Hardman, Franklin D. Hardman and Oren Lee Hardman Jr.
Mr. Hardman will lie in state at the Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Beryl McKisic will officiate. Richard Harlan II
Richard Lee “Richie” Harlan II, 29, of the Jimtown community, passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, as a result of injuries sustained in a coal mining accident.
He was born July 31, 1974, in Elkins, the son of Richard Lee Harlan and Teresa “Terri” Rowan Harlan, residents of Jimtown.
Also surviving are two sisters, Michelle Harlan Phillips and husband, Ritchie, of Elkins and Angie Harlan Isenhart and husband, Henry Brian Isenhart, of Beverly; his maternal grandmother, Violet Rowan of Elkins; four nieces, Racheal, Courtney, Cadie and Carrie; two nephews, Joshua and Jonathan; 15 aunts; 15 uncles; several cousins; and a special friend, Ashley Freeman.
Preceding him in death were his paternal grandparents, George and Lucy Harlan; his maternal grandfather, Garnet “Pee Wee” Rowan; and a cousin, Anthony Harlan.
Richie was a coal miner and an avid hunter.

Gary L. Harman
Gary Lynn Harman, 59, of Beverly, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at his residence. Death was attributed to cancer.
He was born Dec. 17, 1943, in Harman, a son of the late Pershing and Leona Wymer Harman.
He is survived by his wife, Lucinda “Lou” Louk Harman, whom he married Nov. 1973; one stepson, Wesley Summerfield of Columbus, Ga.; one brother, Willard Van and wife, Billie Wymer, of Joppa, Md.; one stepgrandson, Brody Summerfield; several cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Mr. Harman worked in law enforcement most of his life. First, he worked at Huttonsville Correctional Center, then retired as a city of Elkins police radio dispatcher after 27 years service. He served as secretary-treasurer of Seneca Trail Lodge 104 FOP. He was a member of the Thomas Fairfax Lodge 174 AF & AM, Scottish Rite of Clarksburg and Osiris Temple of Wheeling. He was a member of the Harman Church of the Brethren. He was an avid NASCAR fan.
Friends will be received today at Harman Church of the Brethren from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Randall Brake and the Rev. Icie R. Harman, 100, a resident of the Harpertown Road, passed away Wednesday evening, Dec. 10, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born July 9, 1903, in Grant County, the daughter of the late Samuel and Tabitha Hall.
On Jan. 3, 1931, she was married to Dickson Harman, who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1962.
Surviving are four sons, Robert Joe Harman, John Edward Harman, James Dickson Harman and Jack Hair Harman, all of Elkins; and two daughters, Mary Sue Daniels and Erda May Weese, both of Elkins.
Fourteen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren also survive.
Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Ruby Harman; one sister, Mary Margaret Hall; and two brothers, Frank and Edwin Hall.
Mrs. Harman was a homemaker and a Protestant by faith.

Ralph E. Harman II
Ralph Edward Harman II, 50, of Petersburg, died on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va., after a short illness.
Mr. Harman was born on April 24, 1953, in Petersburg, the son of the late Ralph E. Harman Sr. and Helen Louise Boor Harman.
He was a lifelong resident of Petersburg and graduated from Petersburg High School in 1971. He also attended Potomac State College and Fairmont State College.
Mr. Harman was a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church and served as a church elder.
He is survived by three daughters, Leslie Raines, Tammy Kimble and Kim See; one son, Tim Harman; and seven grandchildren, all of Petersburg.
He is also survived by two sisters, Sue Carole Wieneke and Ann Longbon, both of Petersburg; and two brothers, Robert L. Harman of Lahmansville and John W. Harman of Gettysburg, Pa.
One sister, Nancy Lee Harman, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church in Petersburg with the Rev. Guy Richard Cardot and the Rev. Richard Longbon officiating. Family will receive friends at the church following the service. Sarah I. Harman
Sarah I. Harman, 81, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2003, in Tucson, Ariz.
She was born July 8, 1922, in Elkins, the daughter of the late Fred and Susie Harman.
She is survived by four brothers, John Harman and wife, Janice, of Peterstown, Fred Harman and wife, Anne, of Fairfax, Va., William Harman of Nashville, Tenn., and Jake Harman and wife, Vicky, of Lewisburg.
One sister, Sue Gergren, preceded her in death.
Sarah graduated from Elkins High School, Davis & Elkins College and received a master’s degree from Cornell University.
She served as a county 4-H agent in Harrison, Wood and Randolph counties. She retired from the University of Arizona where she served on the state 4-H staff.
On April 4, Sarah will be remembered and honored for her work in 4-H by being inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C.

Carl R. Harper
Carl Reginald Harper, 80, a resident of the Westover community, Morgantown, departed this life Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at the Monongalia General Hospital at Morgantown.
He was born Monday, Nov. 26, 1923, at Parsons, the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Harper and Effie May Varner Harper.
On May 4, 1946, he was married to the former Laura Isabelle Wilson, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are five sons, Carl E. “Eugene” Harper, Charles A. Harper, Richard G. Harper and James F. Harper, all of Morgantown, and George Steven Harper of Masontown; three sisters, Sheila A. Myers of Morgantown, Caron I. Gladfelter of Alderson and Mary L. Trompak of Bruceton Mills; six brothers, Paul “Sweetie” Harper of Parsons, Harry Harper, Alfred Harper and John Harper, all of Ravenna, Ohio, Billie Harper of Orlando, Fla., and Junior Harper of Hendricks; two sisters, Anna Phillips and Arbeautus “Beauty” Myers, both of Parsons; and 11 grandchildren, Michelle Jeffery, Richard McClung, Tina Cordwell, Patrick Shannon, Robbie Harper, Dina Harper, Laura Adams, Jennifer Richards, Kristie Harper, Stephanie Harper and Robert “Bobbie” Harper.
He served during World War II with the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer. He was a supervisor for Dutch Oven Bakery and a mechanic for Wilson Chevrolet. He was a Methodist by faith.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Hallie E. Harper, 80, of Hubbard, Ohio, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at Northside Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 21, 1923, in Whitmer, the daughter of late Isaac and Floda Nelson Thompson. She has been a Hubbard resident since 1955.
Mrs. Harper was a homemaker, an active member of the Coalburg United Methodist Church and enjoyed ceramics and reading.
Her husband, Orville W. Harper, whom she married in October 1942, died in June 1998.
She leaves two sons, Larry J. Harper and wife, Brenda, and William I. Harper and wife, Deborah, all of Hubbard; one daughter, Helen Kay Rasile and husband, William, of Longview, Texas; one sister, Edith Vandevander of Kerens; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Orville Harper Jr.; six brothers and one sister.

Kertie Harper, 101, of PO Box 100, Seneca Rocks, 26884, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.
Miss Harper was born Oct. 7, 1901, in Macksville, a daughter of the late Fred Harper and Jennie Harman Harper.
Surviving are one daughter, Frances Wimer, Cherry Grove; three sons, Harman Kisamore, Seneca Rocks, Freddie E. Kisamore, Seneca Rocks, and Ival P. Kisamore, Charleston; one sister, Ruby Vance, Upper Tract; one brother, Mason Harper, Pendleton County Nursing Home; and 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 38 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Edwin Kisamore; four brothers, Walter Harper, Brose Harper, Johnny Harper and Burrell Harper; and three sisters, Beulah Watts, Mamie Warner and Margie Huffman.
Miss Harper was a homemaker and a cook at lumber camps. She was a Protestant.

Sylva J. Harper
Sylva Jemima Teter Harper, 95, a lifelong resident of Wymer and a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center for the past two weeks, passed away Monday, June 30, 2003, at 9:10 a.m. in the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.
She was born Oct. 1, 1907, at Wymer, a daughter of the late Aaron and Florence May Kerns Teter.
On Feb. 21, 1925, she was united in marriage to Carney Harper, who preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1962.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Homer (Helen) Rapp of Summersville, Mrs. Layne (Anna) Hinkle of Chardon, Ohio, and Mrs. Bobby (Rose Mary) Vance of Onego; three sons, Billy Harper and wife, Louise, of Beckley, Thamar Harper and wife, Harriet of Hartwick, N.Y., and Howard Harper and wife, Evelyn, of Beverly; one sister, Gail Kirk of Delmar, Md.
Mrs. Harper also raised her oldest granddaughter, Mrs. Jack (Kitty) Judy of Harman.
Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 24 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two sons, five sisters, three brothers and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Harper was a loving mother, homemaker and care giver. She was a member of the Harman Church of the Brethren, where she served as superintendent, and was also a teacher at the Harperton Sunday School for several years.
One of her great loves was the time she spent with her children and their families. Her favorite activity was traveling. Her travels included the Holy Land, Africa, China, Europe, Germany, Hawaii, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Mexico, Greece and the Virgin Islands.
She took two cruises’ during her lifetime, one which she was a passenger aboard the Queen Elizabeth, which sailed from paris to New York. She also attended the World Fairs in New York and New Orleans.
Among her travels she also traveled to most of the 50 states.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home today after 6 p.m. On Thursday, Mrs. Harper will be moved to Harman Church of the Brethren for visitation from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Joe Mininger, retired Mennonite minister will officiate. Interment will follow in the Harper Cemetery near Harman. The F.E. Thamar Harper Sr.
Thamar L. “Tim” Harper Sr., 72, of Hartwick, N.Y., died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003.
He was born at Harman on June 14, 1931, the son of the late Carney and Sylva J. Teter Harper.
He attended Randolph County schools, including the Harperton Grade School, a two-room schoolhouse.
On April 2, 1951, he married Harriette Preston Harper of Hartwick, N.Y.
Thamar was 16 years old when he helped build the flood dam in Elkins. Later he was employed by Republic Steel in Youngstown, Ohio, and in New York by Peterson’s Farm, Wright’s Farm Supply and Corning Glass.
He served as highway superintendent for the town of Hartwick and the town of Laurens. Most recently he owned Tim Harper’s Stump Removal.
For several years Thamar proudly served as fire chief of Hartwick, N.Y.
He enjoyed the time spent with his family and especially his grandsons. He also enjoyed visiting with family in his home state of West Virginia.
He is survived by his loving wife, Harriette, with whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage.
He is also survived by two sons and two daughters, Deborah Clegg and husband, Ronald, of Hartwick, N.Y., Thamar L. “Tim” Harper Jr. and wife, Lori, of Hartwick, N.Y., Norma Jean Burkhart of West Oneonta, N.Y., and James C. Harper and wife, Deborah, of Hartwick, N.Y.
He is also survived by four grandsons, Jacob Burkhart and wife, Kimberly, Andrew Clegg and friend, Anne Hall, Eric Burkhart and friend, Becki White, and Carney Harper.
He is survived by four sisters and two brothers, Helen and Homer Rapp of Summersville, Billy and Louise Harper of Beckley, Anna May and Layne Hinkle of Chardon, Ohio, Howard and Evelyn Harper of Beverly, Rosemary and Bobby Vance of Onego, and Kitty and Jack Judy of Harman; and his brother-in-law, Charles Preston of New York.
Also surviving are several beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren, Amanda Clegg and Philip Clegg; and by two infant brothers, Jacob Columbus Harper and Ralph Carney Harper.
Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m. Saturday. Graveside services will be conducted at the Jacob C. Harper Family Cemetery at 10 a.m. Sunday. The family will make a dedication of the grave and interment will follow. Emery J. Harr
Emery Judson “Pete” Harr, 86, formerly of Canaan Valley and Moorefield, passed away Dec. 16, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.
He was born March 23, 1917, in Canaan Valley, the son of the late Frank and Caroline Kesner Harr.
Mr. Harr was never married. Survivors include one brother, Raymond B. Harr of Moorefield; two sisters, Agnes Carr of Belington, Virginia Smith of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Harr worked as a farmer in Canaan Valley most of his life before selling his farm to Fish and Wildlife and moving to Moorefield 24 years ago.
He was a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received at the Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at the Hinkle Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. Friday with Doyle Patch officiating. Mary J. Harr
Mary Jocelyn Harr, 86, of Canaan Valley, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at her home.
She was born April 10, 1917, in Red Creek, the daughter of the late Lorenzo Dow Raines and Carrie Raines.
On March 3, 1943, she married Richard “Dick” Harr, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Carl Harr of Canaan Valley and James Harr and wife, Marilyn, of North Canton, Ohio; two daughters, Barbara Alford and husband, James, of Leadmine and Phyllis Garcia of Waldorf, Md.; one brother, Fred Raines of Elyria, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Jimmy and Mark Alford, Jason, Nathan and Wesley Garcia, and Sarah and Osman Harr; and one great-grandson, Richard Alford.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Arthur, Bruce, Lester and Blake Raines; and four sisters, Ruth Raines, Bess Kisamore, Ethel Smith and Ann Wolford.
Mrs. Harr was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was a long-time member of Buena Vista United Methodist Church of Canaan Valley and the Flanagan Hill Senior Outpost.
Friends will be received at the Hinkle Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Buena Chapel United Methodist Church in Canaan Valley with the Rev. Anna Harris
Anna Catherine Stanton “Katie” Harris, 78, a former resident of Youngstown, Ohio, and Norton, and more recently a resident of Beverly, departed this life Saturday evening, Oct. 18, 2003, at her home. She had been in declining health.
She was born Tuesday, May 19, 1925, at Ellamore, the daughter of the late Peter William “P. W.” Stanton and Mary Jane Burke Stanton.
Along with her husband, William E. “Speed” Harris, whom she married Jan. 20, 1940, at Coalton, they moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where they raised their family.
In 1980, they moved back to West Virginia. Her husband preceded her in death in 1985.
Katie was a homemaker, was of the Catholic faith and was an avid church-goer.
She was a very devoted and loving mother who enjoyed spending all of her time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren
She leaves behind to cherish her memory three sons, Paul “Tom” Harris and wife Janet, John J. Harris and William D. Harris, all of Youngstown, Ohio; four daughters, Mary Catherine McCarthy of Austintown, Ohio, Christine Lynn Vanpelt of Beverly, Cynthia Shreve of Elkins and Karen Kerns and her fiancÈe, Doug Burns, with whom Mrs. Harris made her home at Beverly; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sarah E. Hodges of Elkins; and three very special people, Becky Harris, Cathy Harris and Sue Seaman.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were four brothers, Phillip, Edwin, Lawrence and Michael; three sisters, Agnes, Gertrude and Genievee; two children, Barbara and Cheryl; and two grandchildren, Johnny Harris and Jimmy Lawrence.
God gave us a treasure of immense and untold worth and brought a touch of heaven to our lives here on earth. For he sent us someone wonderful, an angel from above, when he blessed us with the gift of you, our mother, our joy, our love.

Barbara Harris
Barbara Harris, 69, of 115 1/2 Ritchie St., Buckhannon, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at 10:23 a.m. at her home in Buckhannon.
She was born April 28, 1933, in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Raymond Lee and Mable Tressie Reese Murphy.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Lee Harris, Buckhannon, and Raymond Alan Harris, Morgantown; three daughters, Kay Knotts, Nutter Fort, Barbara Jo Lal, Buckhannon, and Deshilla Rose Jones, Nutter Fort; one brother, James Murphy, Morgantown; two grandsons, John Andrew Loar, Moatsville, and Richard Lee Harris II, Staunton, Va.; two granddaughters, Michelle Lea Starkey, Shiloh, and Angela Dawn Tresize, Shinnston; and six great-grandchildren.
She was an elementary school cook and a Methodist by faith.

Garry E. Harris
Garry E. Harris, 66, facing cancer with great faith, passed into eternal rest Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at his home in Kenmore, Ohio, with his soul mate, Sylvia, by his side.
Educated in West Virginia public schools, he later served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, earning the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Medal and Expert Rifleman of the M-16.
A self-taught mechanic, he added to his knowledge by completing the Textron School in Atlanta, Ga. He retired from Mayfair Country Club.
A lover of sports, he watched every game and traveled to Cleveland Indians’ and Browns’ games. He also liked to fish, bowl and boat on Portage Lakes.
He was a member of the Cathedral of Tomorrow and later attended Akron Baptist Temple.
Active in the Christian Children’s Fund and Feed the Children programs, he was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Italian-American Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Civitan Club.
As disabilities prohibited travel, he was a reader of Civil War and World War II history. He enjoyed at his home swimming, the rose, flower and vegetable gardens and found great pleasure with his loved dog, Ranger.
Mr. Harris was born Oct. 1, 1936, in Wyatt, W.Va., to the late Homer and Belle Hickman Harris.
He was preceded in death by sisters Jean McCombs, June Steele and Karen Ann Harris; and brothers Robert, Rexall, Ray, Ross, Randall, Richard and Michael.
Survivors are daughter, Elisabeth Hetterich of Germany, Judy Harris of Elkins, brother Ralph Harris of Shinnston, Sylvia Hamrick of the home in Kenmore, Ohio, sister-in-laws Helen Harris of Fairmont, Dorothy Stalnaker and Kathryn Harris of Shinnston, and Rose Harris of Grafton.
Per Garry’s request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at the convenience of the family.

Greg Harris
Greg Harris, 33, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at his residence.
He was born in Morgantown, a son of Marie Hogan Harris and the late William “Bill” Harris.
He was the manager of Mountain Heritage Federal Credit Union and a member of Christian Life Center. He was an avid golfer and hunter and helped coach little league football in Mineral Wells.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sheila Harris, and their two children, Isaac Noah and Madison Paige Harris. He is also survived by two brothers, William “Bill” Harris of Buford, Ga., and Brad Harris of Terra Alta; and his father and mother-in-law, R. Carroll and C. Nadine Hull of Fairmont.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Pastor Delton Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lubeck Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.  From 20 Jun 2003.

Gregory A. Harris
Gregory Allen Harris, 33, of Parkersburg, passed away June 18, 2003, at his residence.
He was born July 18, 1969, in Morgantown, a son of Marie Hogan Harris of Clarksburg, and the late William Bayard Harris Jr.
He was the manager of Mountain Heritage Federal Credit Union of Parkersburg and Martinsburg. He was a member of Christian Life Center. He graduated from Fairmont State College in 1992 and was a former employee of the former Empire National Bank in Clarksburg.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sheila; two children, Madison Paige and Isaac Noah; two brothers, William Bayard Harris II and wife, Betsy, of Buford, Ga., and Bradley Eugene Harris and wife, Tabitha, of Terra Alta; two nieces, Audrey and Andrea of Terra Alta; three nephews, Jake, Ben and Zac of Buford, Ga.; an uncle, Edsel Hogan of Franklin; and his mother and father-in-law, R. Carroll and C. Nadine Hull of Fairmont; three aunts, Leah Kincaid of Minooka, Ill., Elsie Hit of Jacksonville, Ark., and Elaine Valentine of Elkins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Wesley Hogan; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Bayard Harris Sr.; two aunts and five uncles.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two brothers, Owen D. and Emmitt H. Kerens.
She attended the schools of Kerens and was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1935. Irene and Ray owned and operated Harris’ Restaurant during the 1950s. She had worked for Andrews’ Jewelers and was the co-owner of Tyre’s Shoe Store until her retirement in 1973. She enjoyed needlework, sewing and working with flowers and her greatest love was her family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

James L. Harris
James Lee Harris, 51, of Homestead Avenue, Andover, Ohio, died Tuesday July 8, 2003, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, Ohio.
Born on July 25, 1951, in Elkins, he was the son of William F. and Neva I. Doerr Harris.
A longtime Andover area resident, Mr. Harris was employed for many years by the Burgess Boat Landing on Pymatuning Lake. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mr. Harris married the former Jill P. Martin on March 2, 1978.
Survivors include his wife and two sisters, Frances I. Mercer of Andover and Maryann Sanders of Andover.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, William F. Harris Jr.

Nelson A. Harris
Nelson Alfred Harris, 82, a resident of Route 2, Elkins, the Crystal Springs community, departed this life Sunday afternoon, June 1, 2003, at the Charleston Area Medical Center-Memorial Division at Charleston, where he had been a patient since undergoing heart surgery.
He was born Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1920, at Huttonsville, the son of the late Andrew Harris and Addie McGee Harris.
He was married at Oakland, Md., to the former Donna Mae Gibson, who survives.
Also surviving are five sons, Kenneth Nelson Harris and wife, Debbie, Chenoweth Creek community, Dennis Allen Harris and wife, Helen, Parsons, Bradford Leon Harris and wife, Paula, Gilman, Danny Walter Harris and wife, Regina, Kerens, and Benny Joe Harris and wife, Michelle, Elkins; three daughters, Eileen L. Harris, Matthew B. Harris, Timothy A. Harris, Donald N. Mole, Angela S. Holliday, April D. Kelly, Joseph Kelly, Wesley A. Mole, Mark A. Harris, Tyler N. Harris, Nicholas J. Harris, Andrew S. Harris, Kaitlyn M. Harris, Brandon J. Harris, Heather A. Harris and Haley A. Harris; and four great-grandchildren, Courtney Harris, Trevor Harris, Samantha Harris and Levi Harris.
He was preceded in death by one infant son, Delbert Andrew Harris; one son-in-law, John W. Holliday Jr.; and two sisters, Orpha Sexon and Mary Bell Harris.
He attended the schools of Randolph County, was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army. He had worked as a diesel mechanic for Hogan’s Transfer and Storage for 27 1/2 years and retired in 1983, he was an avid NASCAR and baseball fan and was an outdoorsman.

Ray Harris
Ray Harris, 59, of Route 4, Box 591A, Buckhannon, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at his home.
He was born May 26, 1943, at Kesling Mill, a son of the late Francis and Dorothy Winans Harris.
On Aug. 18, 1962, he married Frances Lorraine Smith Harris, who preceded him in death on Sept. 14, 2001.
Surviving are two sons, Bryan Harris and Carrol Harris, both of Buckhannon; one daughter, Rosalee Carr, Buckhannon; three brothers, Larry Harris, Morgantown, and Steve Harris and Greg Harris, both of Buckhannon; one sister, Donna Sue Smith, Buckhannon; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Waybright.
He was a bricklayer and attended Kesling United Methodist Church.

Roy Harris
Roy Lee Harris, 68, a resident of the Laurel Mountain Road, passed away at 12:58 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, in the Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born May 19, 1935, in Valley Bend, a son of the late Martin Luther and Rebecca Bell Collins Harris.
He was twice married, first to Nancy Daniels, and later to Mildred Marie Walker Harris, who survives in Elkins.

Also preceding him in death were a son, Chad Walker Harris; two brothers, John Harris and William B. Harris; and four sisters, Ruth Hedrick, Viola Wilfong, Laura Lea Brace and Lela Vanover.
Mr. Harris attended the schools of Randolph County and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired union carpenter and a Protestant by faith.

Sylvia Katherine Harris, 91, of Route 6, Box 218, Buckhannon, died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at the home of her son, Lewis Posey.
She was born April 12, 1912, in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Scott and Svilla Pumphrey Riffle.
She was twice married. First, she married Timothy Posey, who preceded her in death. Second, she married Forrest Dale Harris, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Daisy Lewis, Buckhannon; four sons, Thomas Riffle, Tennessee, Lewis Posey, French Creek, and Howard Posey and Sam Posey, both of Buckhannon; one sister, Minnie, Pennsylvania; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Eugene Posey and Lester Posey; two brothers, Wilbert Sprouse and Edward Riffle; and five sisters, Mary Radcliff, Edna Thompson, Barbara Frashure, Gay Butcher and Ruth Stump.
She was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith.

Curtis Matthew Harsh, 19, a resident of 1903 Shiloh Court, Fayetteville, N.C., passed away July 18, 2003, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
Born July 5, 1984, at Camp Lejeune, N.C., he was the son of Robert L. Harsh and Carrie L. Thorpe Harsh, both of Fayetteville, N.C.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Harsh is survived by a brother, Jacob Harsh of Fayetteville, N.C.; maternal grandparents, Raymond and Joyce Thorpe of Buckhannon; paternal grandparents, Joyce and Dan Brown of Buckhannon; paternal great-grandparents, Morris and Kathleen Harsh of Buckhannon; and maternal great-grandparent, Violet Lucas of Freeport, Pa.
Mr. Harsh was a student and attended the Arran Lakes Baptist Church.

Erma Harsh
Erma Jean Kisner Harsh, 75, of St. George, departed this life early Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 2003, at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital at Oakland, Md. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to respiratory failure.
She was born July 27, 1928, at Limestone, the daughter of the late Roy Kisner and Goldie Marie Auvil Kisner.
On Dec. 24, 1947, she was married to Melvin Ercil Harsh, who preceded her in death on April 23, 1994.
She is survived by two sons, Ercil Eugene Harsh and wife, Anna, of Canton, Ohio, and Robert Allen Harsh and wife, Rocky, of St. George; one daughter, Sheila Darlene Klusty and husband, Lewis, of Kent, Ohio; one sister, Virginia Friend; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and two special friends, Arlene Shomo and Jean Supak.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Darwin Harsh; and three sisters, Reva Spessert, Vick Harsh and Ruth Spessert.
She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1947. She was a homemaker and worked as a waitress and enjoyed helping people. She loved flowers and gardening.
She attended the Limestone Methodist Church and was the trustee of the church.
The family will receive friends at the Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. She had never married.

Pauline Harsh
Pauline Chipps Harsh, 89, a resident of the Clifton Run Road, Kerens, departed this life Friday evening, Dec. 12, 2003, at her home. She had been in declining health.
She was born Monday, Aug. 31, 1914, at Upshur County, the daughter of the late Clinton B. Chipps and Mabel Dean Chipps.
On May 25, 1935, she was married to Delbert Clark Harsh Sr., who preceded her in death on March 30, 2002.
Surviving are one son, Delbert Clark “Jim” Harsh Jr. and wife, Christine, of Kerens; one daughter, Emma F. Shurling and husband, Tony, of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Dale Chipps and wife, Mildred, of Kerens; and six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband is one daughter, Ina Jean Harsh.
Pauline was a graduate of Elkins High School, was a homemaker, and was a Protestant by faith.

Charles Hart
Charles "Tick" Hart, 92, of Maryland, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003.
He was born in Mabie, the second of three sons of Sarah Florence Suiter and Howard Hart of Beverly. Part of his youth was spent in the now historic "Hart House" on Rich Mountain. He later moved with his family to Beverly where they lived in his mother’s family home, the "Henry Suiter House," for many years.
He was a graduated of Beverly High School in 1930. The following year he was married to the former Helen V. Hodges, the daughter of Brent B. and Lula Barb Hodges, also of Beverly.
He was descended from a long line of early settlers in Beverly and always considered this his true home.
In 1939, he moved to the Baltimore area where he worked as a marine electrician for the Maryland Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. until his retirement in 1974. He continued to live at his home in Maryland until his death after a fairly short illness.
Mr. Hart was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1977; his brother, A. Blair Hart in 1993; and a daughter, Suzanne, in 2002.
He is survived by one brother, Mason Hart of Beverly; a son, Joseph E. Hart; and three daughters, Nancy DiCianni, Linda Filkins and Robin Quillen, all of Maryland. There are 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren living in various parts of the United States and Europe.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church on Files Creek Road at 4-H Road. He will be buried in the Beverly Cemetery beside his wife and daughter.

Debra Ann Hart
Debra Ann Mason Lauzau Hart of Sissonville returned to our Lord due to an extended illness of ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Deby passed on peacefully in the comfort of her family and home on Thursday, July 3, 2003.
She was born Nov. 28, 1952, in Fairmont, to Ray W. Mason and Lucille A. Mason.
She grew up in Barrackville and was a 1970 graduate of Barrackville High School.
She was executive vice president of the Kanawha Valley Board of Realtors and a member of the North Hills Baptist Church in Sissonville.
She was also one of the founding members of the West Virginia Friends of ALS.
A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, she leaves behind her husband, Edward L. Hart II; two daughters, Lisa Ayne Hewitt and husband, Aaron, of Ripley, and Lindsay Alayne Lauzau; and one granddaughter, Landyn Paige Hewitt.
Deby also leaves behind her mother, Lucille A. Mason of Barrackville; one sister, Donna R. Carpenter and husband, Charles, of Barrackville; one nephew, Scott Carpenter of Barrackville; her mother-in-law, Caramel A. Hart of Bridgeport; and one sister-in-law, Marsha L. Hart of Springfield, Va.
Deby was preceded in death by her father, Ray W. Mason; one niece, Amy D. Carpenter; and her father-in-law, Edward L. Hart.
A funeral/memorial service will be at the Maranantha Fellowship Church at 2910 Kanawha Terrace in St. Albans at 11 a.m. Monday. Genevieve G. Hart
Genevieve Golden Hart, 85, of Clarksburg, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at her daughter’s home in Austin, Texas.
She was born in French Creek, Upshur County, on Aug. 30, 1918, the daughter of the late Hilleary Golden and Dessie Mae Howes Golden.
Her husband, Guy T. Hart, preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 1993.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Edward (Patricia) Dudley of Austin, Texas; one brother, Harvey H. Golden of Buckhannon; two grandchildren, Guy Dudley and Brittaney Dudley, both of Austin, Texas.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, one of whom was an infant, Geraldine Golden and Virginia K. Golden.
Mrs. Hart was a member of Clarksburg Baptist Church. She was active in the Young Women Republicans, Business and Professional Women, 4-H Extension Service, the North View Senior Extension Service and a friends support group called “The Goldeneers.”
Mrs. Hart always approached life with a positive attitude; she never complained and showed remarkable strength. She always displayed genuine kindness to all. It was through these qualities that God chose to use her as a witness to others. She was a remarkable lady who used actions over words. Her obligations as a wife, mother and grandmother were handled with love, strength and understanding. We will all miss her but look forward to seeing her again.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, where a funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. David L. Hulme presiding. Entombment will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Virgil S. Hart
Virgil S. Hart, 82, a resident of the Hazelwood community, passed away at 6:38 p.m. Saturday in Davis Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 8, 1921, at Mingo, the son of the late Elam Vance Hart and Mary Regina Stewart Hart.
On Oct. 3, 1951, at Elkins, he was married to the former Luella Tingler, who survives.
Surviving are two sons, Calvin V. Hart of Elkins and Hugh A. Hart of Duquesne, Pa.; one daughter, Hazel Regina Strickland of Goldsboro, N.C.; one foster daughter, two grandsons, one foster grandson, one stepgranddaughter, one great granddaughter and his senior companion, Jack Harper.
Mr. Hart was a graduate and valedictorian of his class at both Beverly High School and Davis & Elkins College.
He entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps in September 1942. After seeing action in Europe, which included landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day, he was discharged in December 1945.
He returned to Randolph County to begin his teaching career until his retirement in July 1979. During his retirement, he wrote many poems. He later worked for the Randolph County Historical Museum in Beverly, a job for which he was duly qualified because both of his grandfathers had served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was an avid collector of Civil War material.
Mr. Hart was a member of Randolph Lodge No. 55 AF & AM of Beverly, Chapter No. 23 of Royal Arch Masons of Beverly, Knights of Templar Commandery No. 21 of Elkins, Osiris Shrine of Wheeling, Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star, Tygart Valley Lodge No. 66 Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Beverly and the William Erving Encampment No. 55 IOOF of Elkins.
He was also a member of the American Order of the French Croix de Guerre, Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation, the West Virginia and Randolph County Education Associations, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Valley Bend Presbyterian Church.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Tygart Valley Lodge No. 66, IOOF of Beverly will conduct a ritualistic service. He was born April 14, 1941, in Buckhannon, the son of the late Martin L. Haskins and Sylvia Gay Heatherly Haskins.
He is survived by one sister, Edna Anulewicz of Burk, Va.; one brother, Larry Haskins, Easton, Md.; four nieces; one nephew; and six great-nieces and great-nephews.

Haley Ann Hathaway, 53, of Clemtown community, Route 3, Philippi, died at 8:44 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at her home following an extended illness.
She was born Sept. 14, 1949, at Grafton, a daughter of the late Delbert Camden and Eva Macel (Nee Phillips) Weaver.
On May 28, 1971, she was married to Rickie D. Hathaway, who survives at Clemtown community.
Also surviving are one daughter, Miss Trista Hathaway, a student at Alderson-Broaddus College, at home; two sons, Roderick Hathaway and companion, Melissa Zirkle, and Kenneth Hathaway and wife, Christena, all of Clemtown community; one brother, Delbert J. Weaver and wife, Melinda, Clemtown community; one sister, Dorothy Hathaway and husband, Perry, North Canton, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Rickie Hathaway and Andy Hathaway.
Mrs. Hathaway was a 1967 graduate of Philip Barbour High School. She was a homemaker and at the time of her illness was employed at the Philippi Foodland. She was a former employee of Reidbord Brothers. She was a member of the Clemtown United Methodist Church.
Friends may call at the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday, when Mrs. Hathaway will be moved to the Clemtown United Methodist Church where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. The Rev. Robert Hathaway Sr.
Robert Hall Hathaway Sr., of Hurricane, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, after a short illness.
He was born in Hundred, on Nov. 15, 1929, a son of the late Andrew Hall Hathaway and Ruby Agnes Hicks Hathaway.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Hathaway; and his foster son, John Ballentine.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lois Jean Billups Hathaway; one brother, Donald Hathaway of Baden, Pa.; two sons, Robert Hall Hathaway Jr. and Rodney Hathaway of Hurricane; four daughters, Karen Ward and Helen Cook of Hurricane, Nancy Drake of Scott Depot, Mary Beth Bednar of Cary, N.C.; and a foster son, Robert Elliott of Hurricane. Grandchildren and nephews also survive him.
He had lived in the Hurricane community for 46 years. He was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College and was employed for 43 years as a chemist with EMC Inc. He was a member of the Kanawha-Putnam Association for Retarded Citizens (the ARC) and helped pioneer special education programs in Putnam County in the 1960s. He had been a member of the Civil Air Patrol and a private pilot. He was a foster parent for 27 years. He had a consciousness of the underprivileged and those in need.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Kanawha-Putnam Association or Retarded Citizens-Community Enrichment Opportunity (CEO) Program, 1201 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, W.Va. 25064.

Marsha F. Poling Mitchell, EdD, MSN, RN, 50, of 101 Gladewood Lane, Hurricane, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Marsha was born Nov. 12, 1953, in Philippi, the daughter of the late Marshall L. Poling and Dorothy F. Poling, who survives at Meadowville.
Marsha was united in marriage on Aug. 16, 1975, to Robert L. Mitchell II, who survives in Hurricane.
Also surviving are two sons, Jayson B. Mitchell and Justin R. Mitchell, both of Hurricane; and one sister and brother-in-law, Jayme D. and husband, Rickey L. Phillips, of Meadowville, Belington.
Marsha was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Arnet and Maysell Simon; and her paternal grandparents, Jay and Gay Poling.
Marsha taught nursing for 27 years and served as assistant professor of nursing at the West Virginia University School of Nursing in Morgantown.
Marsha was a member of the American Nurses Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Southern Nursing Research Society, West Virginia Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau-Alpha Rho Chapter, and Phi Delta Kappa.
Marsha was a member of the Central Chapel United Methodist Church.

Charles E. Hawk
Charles Elmer Hawk, 70, of Washington Grove, Md., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in the Manor Care Potomac Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Potomac, Md., following an extended illness.
He was born Aug., 16, 1933, in Harrisburg, Pa., the son of the late Elmer Ray and Pauline Shoff Hawk.
On Dec. 29, 1961, he married the former Barbara Smith, who survives at Washington Grove, Md.
Mr. Hawk grew up in Leechburg, Pa., and attended Davis & Elkins College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve from 1952 until 1960. He was a retired data processor for the Power Division of Bechtel Engineering.
He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, Md., a life member of American Legion Post 60 in Berkeley Springs and was a former member of American Legion Post 29 in Elkins.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Concord Cemetery. The Rev. Rose M. “Jo” McCartney will officiate and interment will follow with Barbour Post 44 American Legion conducting military rites. Darrell G. Hawkins
Darrell G. Hawkins, 67, of Horner, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, in the Charleston Area Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 21, 1926, in Buckhannon, the son of the late Glenn Hawkins and Nina Glass Hawkins.
He was first married to Alice Smith Westfall. Children born include one daughter, Andrea and husband, Larry Drapela, who survive; and two sons, James and Darrell II, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by one sister, Charleen Baker of Covington, Va.; and four nephews, Wesley, Jeffrey, Glenn and Kevin.
Darrell had one stepbrother, Earl Hawkins, who preceded him in death and two stepsisters, Vera James and Gyda Moore of Walback, who survive.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Vivian McCue Hawkins, whom he married Nov. 28, 1981.
Also surviving are two stepchildren, Christina Booker and husband, Robert, of Charleston, and Delesa Haught and husband, Michael, of Weston.
Darrell is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Crystal, Emily and Macie Haught of Weston; Erica and Sam Booker and Tony Sotelo of Charleston; Darrell Gene III of New York; Seth Isiah Hawkins of Pennsylvania; and Kyle, Zachary and David Hawkins of Eric, Pa.
He was Marine veteran, former mayor of Jane Lew, a charter member of the Jane Lew Fire Department, a former member of the Buckhannon Fire Department and a member of the Beech Mountain Sportsman’s Club at Czar.
He was a member and church superintendent of Vandalia United Methodist Church and a member of the church choir.
He was a carpenter by trade and worked the last 10 years for the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources.
Darrell farmed and was an avid hunter. He coached and managed Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball in Lewis County for many years.
Darrell had many special church friends and several of his 1954 Buckhannon-Upshur graduating class that he loved being with.

Lisa Kay Hawkins
Lisa Kay Hawkins, 46, of Arnold, Md., died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Baltimore, Md., the same day.
She was born July 25, 1957, at Lake Charles, La., the daughter of John Gaspard, who survives at Lake Charles, and Nell David Gaspard, who survives at Corpus Christi, Texas.
Also surviving are her husband, James Kent Hawkins; one son, Bruce Keith Hawkins, U.S. Navy, of Fort Meade, Md.; one brother, Robert Gaspard of Corpus Christi, Texas; one grandchild; and her grandfather, Robert E. Hymes of Junior.
Mrs. Hawkins was a 1974 honor graduate of Woodbridge (Va.) High School. She worked for the 7-Eleven Corp. for 26 years, most recently as a field consultant.
She enjoyed gardening and fund-raising activities for the Children’s Learn to Read Program.
Graveside services will be conducted at the Hymes-Church of the Brethren Cemetery at Junior at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. F.L. “Wink” McQuain officiating. The Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.  From 10 Oct 2003.

Basil R. Heavner, 90, of Route 1, French Creek, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at Dean’s Personal Care Home.
He was born May 18, 1913, in Upshur County, the son of the late Ira Raymond and Edna Elizabeth Tolliver Heavner.
He was united in marriage in 1932 to Pauline Hyre Heavner, who preceded him in death on Jan. 6, 1989.
He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Donice Lee Heavner.
He is survived by one daughter, Joann Beer, widow of Zane Beer, of Route 1, French Creek; three granddaughters, Mrs. Larry (Luanne) Bowers of Scott Depot, Mrs. Thomas (Glenna) Weaver III of Chilicothe, Ohio, and Mrs. David (Ramona) Lacko of Albright; three great-granddaughters, Mrs. David (Laura) May of Lexington, Ky., Mrs. Jeremy (Carol) Brickey of Grayson, Ky., and Amy Weaver of Morehead, Ky; two great-grandsons, Zane and David Lacko, both of Albright; two brothers, Fay Heavner and wife, Betty, of Ireland and Thomas Heavner and wife, Jean, of Diamond, Ohio; four sisters, Juanita Newsome of Buckhannon, Avis Brimlow of Alliance, Ohio, Garnett Roberts of California, and Cletis Marsh of Akron, Ohio; one stepsister, Shirley Rogers of Buckhannon; and devoted caregivers, Mike and Kelli Dean.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Robert and Burton Heavner; and three sisters, Genevieve Rexroad, Mildred Gregory and Lolita Heavner.
Mr. Heavner was a longtime general contractor in Upshur and surrounding counties. His business included trucking, producing crushed stone, paving roads and driveways as well as service and sales of heavy equipment.
He was a longtime member of the West Virginia Motor Truck Association and the West Virginia Contractors Association.
Mr. Heavner served on the Upshur County Board of Education for 14 1/2 years and also on the Upshur County Youth Camp board of directors for 17 years and was an emeritus member.
He also served on the Beechtown Cemetery Association board of directors and was an honorary member. He was also a charter member of the Central Upshur Lions Club.
Friends will be received at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel. Ralph Roosevelt Heavner, 69, of 249 Hillcrest Drive, Mooresville, N.C., died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
He was a mechanic. He was in the U.S. Army.
He was born in Webster County, on May 27, 1933, a son of the late Lester and Dorothy Hamrick Heavner.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Christopher Heavner; two sons, Joseph Allen Heavner, Mooresville, N.C., and Jess Heavner and wife, Beverly, Frankford; two daughters, Patricia Keller and husband, Matthew, Mooresville, N.C., and Terry McClunge and husband, Bruce, Frankford; one brother, Roland Heavner, Mingo Junction, Ohio; four sisters, Rosalie Slaven, Cass, Betty Defibaugh, Durbin, Ruby Richards, Cleveland, Ohio, and Audra Summerfield, Beverly; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

Jean L. Lloyd Heck, of Upper St. Clair, Pa., died on Wednesday, June 4, 2003.
She was born in Elkins, the beloved daughter of the late Herbert and Maude Lloyd.
She married Charles Edward Heck Sr., who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Charles E. Heck Jr.; one daughter, Andrea D. Kostella; and four grandchildren, Natalie Jean Heck, Brent Davis Kostella, Blake Austin Kostella and Cole Taylor Kostella.
She is preceded in death by five brothers.
Mrs. Heck was also a resident of Sun City Center, Fla.

Ronald Lee Heck Sr., 64, of Rincon, Ga., died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at his residence.
He was a native of Pickens and a retired Millwright at Union Camp and a member of North Salem Baptist Church.
Survivors include, Nancy Zipperer Heck of Rincon, Ga.; two sons, Ronald Lee Heck Jr. of Guyton, Ga., and Randall Allen Heck of Rincon, Ga.; one daughter, Diane Lynn Heck Smith of Statesboro, Ga.; parents, Lee and Hesther Heck of Buckhannon; two brothers, Elmer D. James Hedrick
James “Willie” Hedrick, 84, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, July 4, 2003. He was a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas, and formerly of Red Creek.
He was born July 24, 1918, in Red Creek, a son of the late Jasper and Mary Ault Hedrick. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Hedrick, also a resident of Cortland Acres.
Also surviving are eight children, Jim and wife, Kathy, of Red Creek, Richard of Cattlesburg, Ky., Jack and wife, Jean, of Dryfork, Jonathan and wife, Wilma Faye, of Mathias, Audrey Nelson and Larry of Dryfork, Rose Bennett and husband, Bob, of Red Creek, Betty Bonner and husband, Jim, of Gladwin and Judy Smith and husband, Dean, of Harman; one sister, Grace Mitchell and husband, Mitch, of El Paso, Texas; and 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Kent Hedrick.
Willie was a long-time member and trustee of the Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church of Red Creek. He was a rural mail carrier, school bus driver, welder and retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was active in the community and was instrumental in obtaining funds and grants for the building of the Flanagan Hill Community Center. He was caretaker of the Flanagan Hill Cemetery, along with his wife, for many years.
Friends were received at the Hinkle Funeral Home on Sunday and funeral services were today at 11 a.m. at the Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church in Red Creek with the Rev. Joe Mininger and the Rev. J.J. Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Flanagan Hill Cemetery.

William J. Hedrick
William Jay Hedrick, 68, a resident of 206 N. Cherry St., Elkins, was pronounced dead on arrival Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 17, 2003, in the Davis Memorial Hospital Emergency Department. He had been in his usual health and his death was unexpected.
He was born Feb. 7, 1935, at Whitmer, the son of the late Albert and Nellie Varner Hedrick.
He had never married.
Surviving are one brother, Roy Hedrick of Elkins; one sister, Rosezetta Lloyd of Elkins; one niece, one nephew; two great-nieces and three great-nephews.
Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Andrew and Kelly Hedrick.
Mr. Hedrick attended the schools of Randolph County, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was last employed by Elkins Industries prior to his retirement.

Herman Elmer Heitz, 83, of Pineview Apartments, Thomas, passed away Friday, April 4, 2003, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home.
He was born Jan. 1, 1920, in Canaan Valley, the son of the late Joseph and Floda Alice Propst Heitz Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Yokum Heitz; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Herman Joseph and David Elmer; four brothers, Clay, Norman, William and Eugene; and one sister, Louise Harman.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Heitz was a veteran of World War II and worked as a carpenter for the Marley Co. of Kansas City. He was a 50-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Union 1590.

Carolyn Delorse Lantz Helmick, 55, a resident of Hendricks, departed this life Wednesday evening, April 16, 2003, at the Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins. Death was attributed to leukemia.
She was born Jan. 26, 1948, at Ellamore, a daughter of the late George D. Lantz and Nellie Marie Davis Lantz.
On Jan. 21, 1965, at Elkins, she was married to Charles Helmick, who survives at Hendricks.
Also surviving are three daughters, Christina Darlene Long and husband, Frank, of Parsons, Angela Dawn Helmick of Belington, and Tina Marie Helmick of Hambleton; five brothers, Ronald L. Lantz, Ludlow, Ky., Bradford W. Lantz, Eastlake, Ohio, Charles L. Lantz, Robert L. Lantz and Eugene W. Lantz, all of Ellamore; five sisters, Reginia M. Tenney of Buckhannon, Ilene J. Malcomb of Volga, Marlene J. Young and Arthelia A. Norman, both of Ellamore, and Remona G. Zickefoose of Buckhannon; six grandchildren, Jennifer Young, Jessica Long, Toby Helmick, Tiffany Helmick, David Leary Jr. and Chasity Leary.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Margie Marie Kelley.
She attended the schools at Coalton. She was a homemaker and enjoyed fishing and playing bingo.

Junior Dale Helmick, 42, a resident of Slip Hill, Holly Meadows, departed this life Tuesday evening, Jan. 28, 2003, following a sudden illness while driving across the bridge at St. George. Death was attributed to a massive heart attack.
He was born April 29, 1960, at Parsons, the son of the late Raymond James Helmick and Eva Mae Parsons Helmick, who survives at Hendricks.
On Sept. 16, 1979, at Hendricks, he was married to Helen M. Wilfong, who survives at Holly Meadows.
Also surviving are one son, Junior Dale Helmick II, Holly Meadows; one daughter, Amber Lee Helmick, of New Martinsville; four brothers, Jackson L. Helmick and wife, AnnaLee, of Parsons, James R. Helmick, Ralph W. Helmick and wife, Carol, all of New Martinsville, and Keith S. Helmick and wife, Teresa, of Bretz; and several nieces and nephews.
He attended the schools of Tucker County. He had worked for the Bolyard Construction Co. of Parsons, the Nelson Construction Co. of Hendricks, and at the time of his death was employed by the Asplundh Tree Co. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and enjoyed woodworking.

She was born Aug. 22, 1951, in Elkins, the daughter of the Rev. Ronald George and Ruby Watson George, who survive at Mabie.
On Dec. 17, 1970, she was married to Jerry Helmick, who survives at Mabie.
Also surviving are one son, Jerry Ray Helmick, at home; twin daughters, Mrs. Donald (Sherry) Smith of Mabie and Mrs. Travis (Sheila) Arbogast of Elkins; two brothers, Ronald Ray George Jr. and wife, Jenny, of Elkins, and James Edward “Jimmy” George and wife, Ruby, of Mill Creek; two sisters, Mrs. Jerry (Linda) Ryan and Mrs. Scott (Carla )Combs, all of Brandywine; six grandchildren, Sara, Emily and Donald Rowan and Maranda, Haley and Allison Smith, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death was one brother, Victor Dale George.
Mrs. Helmick was a graduate of Coalton High School and worked for many years at Reidbord Brothers in Elkins. She was employed as a nurses’ aide at Colonial Place at the time of her death. She attended the Harrison Community Church at Mabie.
Sandy was a loving and caring person who will be sadly missed by her family and a host of friends.

Mallorie Grace Herndon was born and passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2003, the daughter of Kimberly Bennet and Jimmy Herndon.
Survivors include her parents, Jimmy Herndon and Kimberly Bennett of Elk City; a brother, Justin Derrick Herndon of Elk City; maternal grandparents, Larry and Patty Halstead of Elkins, and Rich and Nancy Bennett of Mill Creek; paternal grandparents, O.J. and Betty Herndon of Elk City; and several aunts and uncles.

Richard G. Herndon
Richard G. Herndon, 88, of 47 Aluswood Ave., Wheeling, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at his home.
He was born Jan. 20, 1915, in Clarksburg, the son of the late R.B. Herndon and Mary Conway Herndon.
He attended St. Michael’s Grade School and Central Catholic High School in Wheeling. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration and law degree from Ohio State University, and commenced his law practice in Wheeling in 1938.
At the time of his death, he was the founding and senior partner of the law firm of Herndon, Morton, Herndon & Yeager. He worked for many years to better health care for the Wheeling area.
He was devoted to the charitable mission of Wheeling Hospital, where he served as a member of the board of directors from 1963 to 1987. From 1970 to 1973, he also served as president of the board of directors of Wheeling Hospital where he worked tirelessly on financial planning, fund raising and construction of the hospital’s new facilities at Medical Park. During his time on the board, he worked to continue the successful expansion of the hospital’s facilities and services to the community.
Since 1963, he served as treasurer and member of the board of directors of the Welty Home for the Aged Inc., which operated as a custodial care home known as “The Welty Home.” In 1970, with other dedicated volunteers, he commenced the organization and construction of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home as a division of the Welty Home for the Aged Inc. He continued to expand Good Shepherd Nursing Home into the largest non-profit nursing home in West Virginia. In 1984, he commenced the organization and construction of the Welty Retirement Apartments. In 2001 he was the moving force in providing a new service to the elderly by the expansion of the Welty Home’s operations to provide assisted living services to its residents who need assistance with daily living, but who do not otherwise require nursing home care.
He was a member of the finance and investment committee of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and volunteered his efforts in service to Bishop Swint, Bishop Hodges, Bishop Shulte and Bishop Schmitt. For more than 30 years, he served successively with Bishop Hodges, Bishop Shulte and Bishop Schmitt as a co-trustee of The Clara Welty Trust for the benefit of Welty Home for the Aged Inc.
Richard Herndon was a long time member of the board of directors of Security National Bank & Trust Co., where he also served as chairman of its holding company Spectrum Financial Cooperation.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Holler Herndon; brothers, John Herndon of Pittsburgh, Pa., Edward Herndon of Bethesda, Md., and James Herndon of Akron, Ohio; and his sister, Mary Lee Herndon of Wheeling. He was also preceded in death in 1980 by his eldest child, Judith A. Herndon, who was his law partner and a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates and the West Virginia Senate.
He is survived by his daughter, Patricia, and her husband, Capt. Thomas Vermillion USAF(retired) of Niceville, Fla.; granddaughters, Colleen Vermillion and Stephanie Dockstader, and her husband, Shiloh; a son, Dr. Richard G. Herndon Jr. and his wife, Rebecca, of Wheeling; grandsons, Richard G. Herndon III and James Herndon and granddaughter, Bonnie Katherine Herdon; son Gregory J. Herndon and his wife, Laura Davis Herndon of Wheeling; granddaughter, Alexa Herndon and grandson, Evan Herndon; a sister, Betty Herndon of Wheeling; and a nephew, Denis W. Busch and his wife, Linda, of Bridgeport, Ohio.
Friends will be received today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Elm Grove.
Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Wheeling with the most Rev. Bernard W. Schmitt as celebrant. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling.

Gatha M. Herron
Gatha M. Herron, 77, of Route 2, Belington, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday morning, Jan. 22, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 31, 1925, in Hunter’s Fork near Belington, a daughter of the late Truman Hartzell and Ola Ann Arzonia Heckler Coontz.
On April 24, 1946, she was married to Forest B. Herron, who survives at Route 2, Belington.
Also surviving are three daughters, Faye and husband, Gary Miller, Sterling, Va., Judy Lynn and husband, Wayne Freeman, and Dianne and husband, Alfred Shahan, all of Belington; grandchildren, Jeffery Neale Miller, Charleston, S.C., Kelli Faye Lowery, Chesapeake, Va., Wayne Scott Freeman, Ft. Wayne, Ind., Nykeea Cher Shears, Emily Suzann Shahan and Summer Yvette Knight, all of Belington; great-grandchildren, Gunnar Dale Miller, Hannah Faye Lowery, Hayden Britt Lowery, Zachary Tyler Freeman, Mackenzie Jade Freeman, Madison Elizabeth Shears, Noah Benjamin Shears and Ethan Lane Knight.
She was also preceded in death by two granddaughters, Monica Faye Freeman and Elizabeth Dianne Freeman; three sisters, Helen Sinsel, Mabel Biller and Ona Bibey; and nine brothers, Paul Coontz, Ralph Coontz, Stewart Coontz, Jack Coontz, Doyle Coontz, Truman Junior Coontz, Kenneth L. Coontz and by infant twin brothers.
Mrs. Herron was a homemaker and former owner and operator of the Shawnee Mountaineer Restaurant. She was a member of Tygart Valley Rebekah Lodge 181 and was an active member of the Calvary Mission Church, serving as secretary, trustee and Sunday school teacher.

Guy L. Hersman
Guy Landon Hersman, 78, of Evans, departed this life Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at his hunting camp on Upper Dry Fork following a sudden illness.
He was born Dec. 16, 1924, in Fairmont, the son of the late Guy Aubrey and Meriam Thomas Hersman.
He was a 1946 graduate of Ripley High School and was a former oil field worker and iron worker.
He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and served on the USS West Virginia.
He was a retired maintenance foreman from Kaiser Aluminum and Century Aluminum.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5501 of Ripley, the Ripley Moose, Ripley Lodge 16 AF & AM, Scottish Rite in Parkersburg and the Nemisis Temple Shrine in Parkersburg.
In recent years, he became known for his elaborate Christmas decorations. Folks would drive for miles to enjoy the lights above and around his home and lakes.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sue Pettit Hersman; three sons, Guy Robert Hersman of Evans, Randy Hersman of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Joseph Edward Corey II of Ripley; one daughter, Shannon Gayle Hersman of Evans; one brother, Willy "Bill" Hersman of Evans; three sisters, Rosemary Archer of Evans, Ellen Whiting of Ripley and Nancy Blake of Orlando, Fla.; and five grandchildren, William Ray Hersman, Benjamin Hersman, Sally Beth Keefer, Emma Sue Corey and Chloe Elizabeth Corey.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gail; and a sister, Joann Lott.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Casto Funeral Home in Evans, where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. A committal service with full military honors provided by Jackson County veterans’ groups will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Otterbein Cemetery in Evans.

Emmett D. Hesse
Emmett David Hesse, 88, of Maysville, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.
He was born on Oct. 10, 1914, at Hopsville, the son of the late William Harry and Susan Amy Turner Hesse.
He was twice married; first to the former Edna Mae Berg, who died on April 18, 1954, and then to the former Effie Keplinger, who survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Artie Mae Cunningham, Lena Amy Wilkins and Darlene Virginia Turner, all of Petersburg, and Bonnie Marie Kisamore of Maysville; two sons, Richard W. Hesse of Fisher and Lee Allen T. Hesse of Manassas, Va.; two sisters, Grace Kuykendall of Petersburg and Virginia Crum of Summersville, Ohio; one brother, Clarence Hesse of Maysville; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and first wife were one grandson, John Bertin Cunningham Jr.; one granddaughter, Teresa Cunningham; one son-in-law, Allen Wilkins; one brother, Thomas; and one sister, Dora Turner.
Mr. Hesse was a farmer and carpenter and a member of Jordan Run Union Church.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. Cora Lea Hewitt, 54, of 122 East Main St., Buckhannon, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at her home in Buckhannon.
She was born March 25, 1949, in Buckhannon, a daughter of Charles Lee Heatherly and the late Margaret McDaniels Heatherly.
On May 17, 1968, she married Larry Hewitt, who survives in Buckhannon.
In addition to her father and husband, she is survived by one son, Michael C. and wife, Cara Hewitt, Buckhannon; four brothers, Pete Heatherly, Buckhannon, David Heatherly, Clarksville, Tenn., Larry Heatherly, Buckhannon, and Joe Heatherly, Indiana, Pa.; three sisters, Karen Harlow, Annie Riley and Brenda Harlow, all of Buckhannon; two daughters, Caila Linger and Tori Hewitt; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Larry Hewitt II.
She was the former owner of Cookie Corner Baker and worked as a teletype operator for Moore Business Forms. She attend the First Baptist Church.

Lillian A. Hewitt
Lillian A. Hewitt, 94, a resident of 410 N. Custer St. in Belington, departed this life at 10:40 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, in the Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health but death was unexpected.
She was born July 22, 1909, in Randolph County, the Files Creek community, the daughter of the late Harl M. and Lula Wilkins McCrobie.
On Oct. 14, 1933, near Belington, she was married to Boyd O. Hewitt, who preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1982.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen V. McCartney and husband, Sheldon, of Belington, with whom she made her home, and Doris Jean Everson and husband, Mendel, of Deerfield, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Virginia McCrobie of Belington; and Dottie Talbott, Dale Owens and Allen Owens, whom she treated as her own children.
Grandchildren surviving are Ronald Everson, Teresa Jacobson, Maryland Marker, Debra Mataski, Greg McCartney and Jeffrey McCartney.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Twila Carpenter; one infant sister; three brothers, Charles McCrobie, Clyde “Buck” McCrobie and Harold McCrobie. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Hewitt attended the schools of Randolph County, was a homemaker and will be distinctly remembered for her genuine love and enjoyment of life.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and on Monday until 11 a.m., the funeral hour. Victor DeNeal Hewitt, 76, a resident of Route 1, Elkins, the Airport Road, passed away at 11:02 a.m., Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his residence.
He was born June 18, 1926, at Philippi, a son of the late Birdsell and Virginia Foy Hewitt.
On Nov. 17, 1946, in Buckhannon, he was married to the former Twila Fern Plemons, who preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 1993.
He is survived by one son, David Paul Hewitt and wife, Pam, of Elkins; two daughters, Carolyn Jean Turner and husband, Larry, of Ijamsville, Md., and Joy Sue Cutright and husband, Daniel, of Elkins; one brother, Billy Hewitt of Elkins; and five grandchildren, Megan and Brad Turner, Scott and Ryan Cutright, and Matthew Hewitt.
Also preceding him in death were a brother, Maurice, and a sister, Evelyn Geraldine Swecker.
Mr. Hewitt attended the schools of Randolph County and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 132.
Mr. Hewitt was a world champion in the two-man cross cut and held many titles in other events. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and attended the First Baptist Church of Elkins.

Clara Jane Hibbs, 97, of 148 Camden Ave., Buckhannon, died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at her home.
She was born April 14, 1905, at Bailey Ridge, a daughter of the late Charles David and Addie Ree Wilfong.
On July 4, 1924, she married James Lewis Hibbs, who preceded her in death on July 1, 1983.
Surviving are one grandson, Roger Hibbs and wife, Pat, Buckhannon, with whom she resided for the past 11 years; three granddaughters, Kathy Bucklew and husband, Steve, North Carolina, Melinda Hupps and husband, Robert, Quiet Dell, and Ms. Sandra Hibbs, Ohio; two great-grandsons, Kristopher Grant, Stonewood, and Ben Bucklew, North Carolina; four great-granddaughters, Mrs. Michelle Shreves, Buckhannon, Britne Bucklew and Jessica Bucklew, both of North Carolina, and Jenna Hupps, Quiet Dell; two great-great-grandsons, Jason Hibbs and Joseph Shreves, both of Buckhannon; one great-great-granddaughter, Ashley Shreves, Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Bennie J. Hibbs and Herbert L. “Herbie” Hibbs; six brothers, Lesley Wilfong, Charles Everett Wilfong, William Guy Wilfong, Arley Jack Wilfong, Jacob Winfield “Wink” Wilfong and Herbert Wilfong; four sisters, Madge Wilfong, Elsie Freda Miller, Vonda Smith and Juanita Cutright McFadden; and one unnamed baby.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Upshur County CEOS. She and her husband ran a small, but very successful dairy farm in the Vicksburg community for more than 40 years. She attended Tallmansville Baptist Church.

Warren E. Hickman
Warren E. Hickman, 48, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, in his residence.
He was born in Oregon, Ohio, on Jan. 6, 1955, and graduated from Clay High School in 1974.
Warren loved to fish, enjoyed classic car shows, NASCAR racing and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan who loved to dawg the Browns.
Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Kathryn and Victor Stemen; his father and stepmother, Estell and Nellie Hickman; his brothers and sisters, Debra and Glenn Iffland, Martin Hickman, Penny and Chester Reneau, William and Karen Hickman and Judy and Sam Moccabee; his nieces and nephews, Alisa and Jeff Iffland, Christy and Toni Reneau, William and Clayton Hickman, and Sam, Ben and Katie Moccabee; his uncle Arling and Dorothy Wamsley; his aunts, Phyllis and Ron Schultz, Evelyn Collins, Ann Hickman and Donna Hickman; special friends, Kenny, Mary and family; great-nieces and nephews; many cousins, relatives and friends.
Warren was preceded in death by his grandparents, Warren and Goldie Wamsley and William and Eva Hickman.

Dennie Flynn Hight, 87, a resident of Monterville, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Feb. 6, 2003. He had been in failing health for the past several years, however his condition had worsened in the past 2 1/2 weeks.
He was born Oct. 8, 1915, in Bluesprings, a son of the late Nimrod M. and Cornellia Hammrick Hight.
In 1940, he was united in marriage to the former Jewell Stalnaker, who preceded him in death on June 21, 1972.

Dennie F. Hight
Dennie Flynn Hight, 87, a resident of Monterville, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Feb. 6, 2003. He had been in failing health for the past several years, however his condition had worsened in the past 2 1/2 weeks.

In 1940, he was united in marriage to the former Jewell Gladys Stalnaker, who preceded him in death on June 21, 1972.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Spence of Monterville, and Shelia Sexton of Monterville; two sons, Charles L. Hight of Hedgesville, and John T. Hight and wife, Brenda, of Culpepper, Va.; one brother, Frank Hight, a resident of the Convalescent Center. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death was one daughter, Kathy Lynn Hight; two brothers, Doc Hite and Norman Hight; a half brother, Marple Payne; and two grandsons, Eric Sexton and Robert Flynn Hight.
Mr. Hight was a coal miner, having worked for Pardee & Curtain. He was a lift operator for Snowshoe retiring in 1978. In the early phase of the Snowshoe Ski Resort, he was one of the main people involved in construction. He loved to travel and was a hunter. He attended the Point Mountain Union Mission Church and was a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Chapel Saturday after 6 p.m. On Sunday, Mr. Hight will be moved to Point Mountain Union Mission Church from noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Marshall Williams, pastor of the church will officiate. Interment will follow in Stalnaker Cemetery at a later date. The F.E. John B. Hilliard
John B. Hilliard, 76, of South Charleston, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, in the company of family members, following heart surgery at CAMC.
He retired from the West Virginia State Police after a 28-year career, reaching the rank of captain in the executive office department at headquarters in South Charleston. While in the State Police, he was a member of the Governor’s Committee on Crime, Delinquency and Correction. Following his service to the citizens of West Virginia, he worked 13 years at FMC in Insitute, fully retiring in 1991 to enjoy the RV life across the United States.
He was born in Montrose, the son of the late Milliard E. Hilliard and Lolita R. Collett. After graduating from high school in Parsons, he served in the Army in World War II with the 788th Ordnance Light Maintenance Company in Italy. He received the Medal of Victory and the Army of Occupation Medal. He returned to Parsons in 1947 and attended Potomac State College. He was a Mason, 32nd Degree, with the Minerva Lodge No. 13 AF & AM in Barboursville. In 2002, he was recognized as a 50-year member of the lodge. He was a member of the Charleston Fraternal Order of Police and the Holiday Ramblers Recreation Vehicle Club.
Surviving are his wife, Lynn Orr Hilliard; sons, John David Hilliard and wife, Nancy, of Hurricane, and Craig Hilliard of Mt. Plymouth, Fla.; daughter, Joan Eigenbrod and husband, Ken, of Coopers Creek; brother, Millard F. Hilliard and wife, Vera, of St. Peters, Mo.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Pinch. Dorothy L. Hines
Dorothy Louise Hines, 86, a resident of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, formerly of the Laurel View Apartments, Belington, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, in the Good Samaritan Center following an extended illness.
She was born Feb. 15, 1917, near Medina, Ohio, a daughter of the late Otto and Pauline (Zacharias) Dushenken.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Barbara Jean Postalwait, Webster Springs; one brother, Frank Dushenke, Medina, Ohio; four stepgrandchildren, 12 stepgreat-grandchildren and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Hines was a homemaker and a former nurse’s aide. She was a Lutheran by faith.

Edgar H. Hines
Edgar H. Hines, 87, a patient in Nella’s Nursing Home, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Davis Memorial Hospital Emergency Department.
He was born March 16, 1916, in South Carolina, the son of the late Matthew and Pauline Hines.
Mr. Hines was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army. He was a farmer prior to his retirement.

Arbdella Ruth Hinkle, 64, a patient in Nella’s Nursing Home, passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, in the Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 1, 1939, at Aurora, a daughter of the late Harvey and Meryl Snider Knotts.
On June 18, 1966, at Aurora, she was married to Dewayne Earl Hinkle, who preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1991.
Surviving are two sons, Dewayne Earl Hinkle of Junior and David Allen Hinkle of Elkins; two sisters, Jean Blamble of Oakland, Md., and Mary Lantz and husband, Richard, of Mt. Lake Park, Md.; a brother, Richard Knotts and wife, Pat, of Eglon; two sisters-in-law, Marie Hinkle and Barbara Compton, both of Elkins; a brother and sister-in-law, Delbert and Lila Jane Hinkle of Dailey; and two granddaughters, Brianna and Cassandra Hinkle of Elkins.
Also preceding her in death were two sons, Ronald R. Hinkle and Brian L. Hinkle; two sisters, Blanch Watring and Colleen Ervin; and a brother, Amos Knotts.
Mrs. Hinkle attended the schools of Aurora and was a homemaker.

Hilma L. Hinkle
Hilma L. Hinkle, 89, of Route 3, Box 223, Buckhannon, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Holbrook Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
She was born June 1, 1914, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Charlie S. Cutright and Ida May Douglas Cutright.
Surviving are one daughter, Jeanie Loudin of Buckhannon; one sister, Jean Cutright of Michigan; two granddaughters, Cheryl Adams and husband, Jeff, of Buckhannon, and Kim Priddy of Buckhannon; one great-grandson, Scott Adams of Buckhannon; and one great-granddaughter, Laura Adams of Huntington.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Hinkle; and nine brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Hinkle was a homemaker.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

Melva Jacquiline Hinkle, 76, of 12 Island Ave., Buckhannon, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, in Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
She was born Oct. 22, 1926, in Anmore, a daughter of the late Rev. Raymond E. Hinkle and the late Rev. Opal F. Radabaugh Hinkle.
Surviving are three sisters, June Bates and husband, Clarence, Baltimore, Md., Faye Baughman, Jacksonburg, and Garnett Dean, Fairmont; one brother, Robert Hinkle and wife, Zelma, Chattanooga, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Jody Moreland, Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Benny L. Moreland and Dennis L. Moreland; one sister, Mildred Hinkle; and one brother, Ronald Hinkle.
She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Tabernacle.

Paul S. Hinkle
Paul Shelton Hinkle, 76, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Monday morning, Dec. 15, 2003, at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.
He was born Wednesday, April 20, 1927, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Paul Roland Hinkle and Coline Ford Hinkle.
On March 23, 1951, at Clinton, Tenn., he was married to the former Wanda Pauline Miller, who survives at Parsons.
He is survived by one cousin, Kay Baker Mower and husband, Roger, of South Carolina.
He is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1945. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and graduated from Davis & Elkins College in 1950.
He was employed as a civil engineer with the Maxon Construction Co., the Boeing Co. and the West Virginia Department of Highways, and retired in 1988. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League, the Pythagoras Lodge No. 128 AF&AM of Parsons and the First United Methodist Church of Parsons.
He and his wife loved to travel. He was an avid reader and was a noted Civil War enthusiast.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Bennie Hinzman, 56, a resident of Valley Bend, passed away at 2:55 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 31, 1946, in Elkins, a son of Mary Grace Simmons Hinzman, who survives at Valley Bend, and the late George Warren Hinzman.
Also surviving are two sons, Donald Benton Hinzman, Weston, and Benny Hinzman Fornash of North Carolina; two brothers, Warren Hinzman, Tacoma, Wash., and Robert Hinzman of Beverly; three sisters, Janet L. Miller, Ellen Swecker and Susan Ann Hinzman, all of Valley Bend; and two grandchildren, Donald Benton Hinzman II and Haylea Sheree Hinzman.
Also preceding him in death were a daughter, Sherry Sue Hinzman; a brother, Frank E. Hinzman; and a sister, Louella Riggleman.
Mr. Hinzman attended the schools of Randolph County and was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School. He was employed as a laborer for the West Virginia Laborers Union.

Vergie I. Hinzman
Vergie Irene Hinzman, 89, of Route 2, French Creek, and formerly of Morgantown, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Nella’s Nursing Home in Elkins.
She was born Dec. 18, 1913, in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late John and Barbra Linger Morrison.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hartzel Hinzman, who died on Oct. 23, 1972.
She is survived by two nieces and five nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Claude Cecil Morrison; and one sister, Ona Merle Ferguson.
Mrs. Hinzman served on the board of directors for the Upshur County Senior Center. She was a life member of the VFW of Morgantown. She was retired from the Seneca Glass Factory in Morgantown with 30 years of service.
Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Sarah Jane Hively, 70, a resident of Knoxville, Tenn., passed away Thursday, Feb. 20,2003.
She is survived by her husband, Lee Hively, of Knoxville; one daughter, Shirley Ferguson and husband, Berlin, of Bartlett, Tenn; one son, David Hively and wife, Shirley, of Alexandria, La.; three sisters, Doris Dilley, Charleston, Mary Galford of Greenbank and Arlene Self, Falmouth, VA.; and one brother, William Arbogast, Hampton, Va.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, Nanette, Tyler, Nathan and Adam; and two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Alexis.
Her parents, William and Annie Arbogast, and one sister, Norma Lee Dilley, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the West Hills Presbyterian Church with pastor Scott Horne and the Rev. Fred Fowler officiating. Elmer M. Hodges
Elmer Merritt Hodges, 84, a resident of the Norton Road, Elkins, departed this life Saturday morning, July 5, 2003, at the Davis Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health.
He was born Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1919, at Blue Rock, a son of the late John “Norris” Hodges and Fannie Currence Hodges.
On Dec. 25, 1939, at Coalton, he was married to the former Sarah Elizabeth Stanton, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Brenda Sharp and husband, Ronald, Norton Road, Elkins; one brother, Eugene Hodges and wife, Doris, Farmsdale, Ohio; and one sister, Betty Fox and husband, Lawrence, Fox Town.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Hull, Noble, Harold and John Hodges, and two sisters, Mazie Fox and Jane Zirkle.
He attended the one-room school at Adolph, was a coal miner with more than 40 years of service having worked for the Three-Fork Coal Mine at Cassity, and various other small coal mines. He retired in 1979 from the Valley Camp Coal Mine at Wheeling. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America District No. 31, the St. Brendan Catholic Church, and was an avid trader.
The family will receive friends at the St. Brendan Catholic Church today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. today at the church, a prayer service will be recited by the Rev. Father William Anderson. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Anderson will be the presider and interment will follow at the St. Brendan Cemetery at Elkins. Richard Hoffmaster
Richard Edmund Hoffmaster, 73, of Harman, passed away March 25, 2003, at Elkins.
He was born Sept. 9, 1929, in Corry, Pa., a son of the late Charles Frederick and Ruth Ellen Burger Hoffmaster.
He is survived by one brother, Dr. Fred Hoffmaster of Hermitage, Pa.; three nieces, Linda Ontko, Debbie Hoffmaster and Carol Hoffmaster; and one great-niece Erin Ontko.
Mr. Hoffmaster graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS degree in chemistry. He was a teacher and also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Elizabeth E. “Gibb” Hoffner, 81, formerly of Thomas, passed away from natural causes on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, in Anchorage, Alaska, where she made her home with her daughter for the past seven years.
She was born March 5, 1922, in Douglas, the daughter of the late Frank and Teresa Fanto Mettica.
Survivors include one son, Lawrence E. Hoffner, Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Mary Ann Ponikvar of Thomas and Vickie Hoffner of Anchorage, Alaska; one sister, Mary Rachel “Boo” Mettica of Thomas; four grandchildren, Rhonda C. Nastuo of Martinsburg, Sherry Davisson of Elkins, Vincent J. Ponikvar Jr. of Shannondale, and Troy A. Hoffner, Wasilla, Alaska.; and three great-grandchildren, Baleigh and Ty Davisson and Courtney Ponikvar.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Hoffner; one son, Frank V. Hoffner; and seven sisters.
Mrs. Hoffner was a homemaker and was a Catholic by faith.
Graveside services were held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thomas with the Rev. Allen Schwarz officiating. Cleva Ione Rudd Hogue, 79, of Route 1, Beverly, the East Dailey community, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, Aug. 24, 2003, at her home. She had been in declining health for the past 2 1/2 years and death was attributed to cancer.
She was born Wednesday, May 21, 1924, at Valley Bend, the daughter of the late William G. Rudd and Pearl Asbury Rudd.
On Jan. 30, 1943, at Mill Creek, she was married to the Kenneth Orval Hogue Sr., who preceded her in death on March 17, 1986. They celebrated 43 years of marriage.
Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Shockey and husband, Robert, of Dailey; one son, Kenneth Orval Hogue Jr. and wife, Arlene, of East Dailey; and four granddaughters, Melissa Warnick and husband, Steven, of Morgantown, Nichole Shockey of Dailey, Denise Scott and husband, Elmer, of Charlottesville, Va., and Tina Cutright and husband, Dan, of Huttonsville; one great-granddaughter, Sara Scott; three great-grandsons, Jonathon Scott and Devin and Daniel Cutright; three sisters, Helen Leib and husband, Ralph, of Tolono, Ill., Nina Saunders of Charles Town and Lucille Thorne and husband, John, of Amherst, Ohio; one brother, Charles Rudd of Stumptown; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her husband and parents were two sisters, Blanch Lois Lewis and Cleo Light; one half sister, Lilly; three brothers, James, Darius and Theodore Rudd; and a special friend, Ercell Rohrbough.
She attended the Homestead School at Dailey and the one-room school at Mill Creek. She was a homemaker, a devoted mother and grandmother, and a noted cook.

Levi Gideon Peace Hogue, 7 months old, infant son of Londa Hogue of Beverly, passed away Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted on Thursday. He had been in his usual health and death was sudden and unexpected.
He was born June 19, 2002, in Elkins.
He is survived by two sisters, Sierra Breann Love Buckley and Gabriel Aleen Faith Buckley; his maternal grandmother, Rhonda G. White; his maternal great-grandparents, Wanda and Albert Saltsman and Myrle and Ralph Houge Sr.; and maternal great-great-grandmother, Ruth McCauley.
Also surviving are several aunts and uncles including Daniel P. Buckley, Jessica D. Buckley and Gena R. Hogue. In addition, he is also survived by several great-aunts, uncles and several cousins, and a special granny, Monteray Raines.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Ralph A. “Bunt” Hogue; and his maternal great-great-grandfather, Ralph McCauley.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Chapel Tuesday after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner chapel Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Madoline R. Burner Holbert, 84, a resident of Fairfax, Va., and a former resident of Philippi and Fairmont, passed away Friday evening, May 16, 2003, in the Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Va.
She was born March 24, 1919, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Harlan and Madge (Jones) Burner.
She was thrice married, first to Paul Cox, second to Junior Kines and third to Thomas Holbert, all of whom preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Paulette Cox Snider, Frederick, Md., and Nancy Cox MacDonald and husband, Milton, Springfield, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold Cox and wife, Melanie, Frederick, Md., and Philip Kines and wife, Terri, Fairmont; two sisters, Virginia Burner Squires, Fairmont, and Patti Burner Probert, Glenmoore, Pa.; two brothers, Henry Burner and wife, Pauline, Windham, Ohio, and Jack Burner and wife, Barbara, Ravenna, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Crystal Riley, Tracy Stafford, Gary Paul Snider, Randy Stafford, Donna Pryor, Maddie Kines and Kate Kines; and six great-grandchildren, Tonya Wagoner, Amy Wagoner, Travis Ashton, David Snider, Jason Snider and Sydney Pryor.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherman and Robert; and one son-in-law, Gary Snider.
She was a member of the Order Eastern Star of Fairmont and a member of the Church of Christ.

Cora Ellen Helmick Holcomb, of Werth, Nicholas County, passed away Monday, March 10, 2003, in Charleston General Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born Sept. 30, 1929, in Pickens, a daughter of the late Alvin “Alley” Helmick and Ethel Cutlip Helmick.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and four sisters.
Surviving are three sons, Michael, Robert and James of Nicholas County; four sisters, Blanche McCartney of Buckhannon, Delsie Brady of Mill Creek, Rose Hogue of Beverly, and Sheila Swetz of West Middlesex, Pa.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Holcomb was a homemaker.

Thelma J. Holcomb
Thelma Jean Price Holcomb, 63, a resident of Pembroke Pines, Fla., departed this life at 12:45 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2003, in the Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., following a month-long illness.
She was born March 31, 1940, in Charleston, a daughter of the late Denzil and Mary Arlena Corley Price.
Surviving are one son, William Holcomb of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; one daughter, Vicki Landers of Middleburg, Fla.; five grandchildren, Lewis, Scott and Cherie Langevin, and Brittany and Ashley Landers, all of Florida; one uncle, Lawrence Corley of Fairmont; three aunts, Laura Thorn of Charleston, Adriana Jarret and Norma Jean Heck, both of Springfield, Va.
Ms. Holcomb attended the schools of Kanawha County, was a Baptist by faith and was a homemaker.

Melba L. Hollen, 75, of Tallmansville Road, Buckhannon, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.
She was born April 7, 1928, in Hesper, the daughter of the late Arthur T. and Dorothy Pulliam Slaughter.
Surviving are her husband, James R. Hollen of Buckhannon; one son, Tom Hollen and wife, Heather, of Buckhannon; two granddaughters, Hannah and Kaitlyn Hollen; one sister, Helma Brockleman and husband, Wayne, of Buckhannon; one brother, Gene Kermit Slaughter and wife, Barbara, of Virginia; and one sister-in-law, Julia Slaughter of Buckhannon.
One brother, Dane Slaughter, is deceased.
She was a bank teller for Central National Bank of Buckhannon for 17 years.
She was a Christian by faith.

Marshall Goode Homes III, of Slatyfork, formerly of Bramwell, died at his residence on Snowshoe Mountain on Thursday, April 17, 2003.
He was born in Bluefield on Sept. 13, 1949, a son of M. Goode Homes Jr. and Helen Swift Perry Homes.
He was a graduate of Greenbrier Military School and attended North Carolina State University and Bluefield College.
He is survived by his sister, Caroline Homes Nuckolls and husband, G. Richardson Nuckolls Jr.; nephew, Michael H. Lilly Jr.; niece, Elizabeth Marshall Lilly; uncle, Eugene Crosby Homes of Staunton, Va.; and aunt, Ruth Evans Perry of Lynchburg, Va.
He was an avid spelunker. He was renowned for his exploration and intimate knowledge of the geography of West Virginia and Southwest Virginia, having led numerous mapping expeditions of limestone caverns in the Appalachian region. In addition to his extensive mineral collection, he also assembled an impressive array of Native American artifacts. He was an accomplished guitarist. At the time of his death, he was employed at the Red Fox.

Jean Cunningham Hoover, 52, of Route 4, Box 591 A, Buckhannon, died Thursday, Jan 23, 2003, at her residence in Buckhannon.
She was born April 1, 1950, in Webster Springs.
Surviving are one daughter, Sheryl Feronti and husband, Michael, of French Creek; one son, Joshua Cunningham and wife, Stephanie, of Elkins; three brothers, Nelson Clutter of Webster Springs, Leroy Clutter of Diana, and Delmas Clutter of Bolair; five sisters, Bonnie Harris of Buckhannon, Kathy Nichols of Bergoo, Karen Green of Bergoo, Myrtle Norris of Elyria, Ohio, and Myrl McCourt of Webster Springs; four granddaughters, Haley Cunningham of Elkins, Sierra Cunningham of Elkins, Jessica Feronti of French Creek, Emily Feronti of French Creek; one brother, the Rev. Bobbie Clutter of Cowen; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Oscar Clutter and mother, Mary Perkins Clutter.
She was resident of Buckhannon for the past 18 years, formerly of Diana, and Webster Springs. She was a homemaker and a former licensed practical nurse, a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 18, Buckhannon. She was a 1968 graduate of Webster Springs High School.

Virginia B. Hoover
Virginia Bly Hoover, 86, of French Creek, died Saturday, May 24, 2003.
The acknowledged authority on the settlement of French Creek and pioneer families, she was consulted by descendants from all over the United States. Serving as secretary of the French Creek Pioneers for 40 years, she wrote and published their biennial publication during that time. A teacher in Upshur County public schools for 44 years, she taught English at Buckhannon-Upshur Junior High School. She was a graduate of Upshur County High School, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Columbia University. She served many years on the Upshur County Library Board. She was a Presbyterian Elder at the French Creek Presbyterian Church. As an avid bird watcher, she traveled extensively at home and abroad as a member of the Brooks Bird Club. She was a life member of the American Association of University Women and served one term as state president. She was also a member of the Upshur County Historical Society, Mensa, Delta Dappa Gamma, the Wesleyan Emeritus Club, and the Retired Teachers Association.
She was the daughter of O.B. Hoover and Zoe Darnall Hoover.
She is survived by her sister, Hazel Marie Hoover Snyder, Williamsburg, Va.; a sister-in-law, Margaret Shoulders Hoover, Belle Glade, Fla.; four nieces, Virginia Snyder Campbell, Williamsburg, Va., Zoe Tyler, Pleasant Hill, Calif., Dr. Margaret Lindrose, Belle Glade, Fla., and Pamela Novak, Austin, Texas; three nephews, Gregory B. Snyder, Boca Raton, Fla, Morgan Darnall Snyder, Linden, Va., and Edward H. Snyder, Willow, Ark.; one cousin, Diana Steed, Buckhannon; and nine great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Hoover.

Bradley S. Hornbeck
Bradley S. Hornbeck, 7, of Myersville, Md., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., after an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 2, 1996, in Frederick, Md., and was the son of Brian Stephen and Loretta Lynn Winfield Hornbeck.
Bradley attended Rock Creek School in Frederick and was a member of the Harmony Church of the Brethren in Harmony.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Jonathan Hornbeck and Noah Hornbeck, both of Myersville; his maternal grandparents, Jesse and Edna Ford Winfield of Myersville; his paternal grandparents, Terry and Barbara Boss Hornbeck of Dailey; his paternal great-grandmother, Leota Hornbeck of Valley Bend; two aunts, Debra Beck of Hagerstown, Md., and Jessica Jordan and husband, Sander, of Fairmont; and two cousins, Amy Whipp of Hagerstown, Md., and Sophia Jordan of Fairmont.
The family will receive friends at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville, Md., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Katherine Hornbeck
Katherine “Kathy” Elizabeth Bender Hornbeck, 53, a resident of John Street, Elkins, passed away at 5:34 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 15, 1949, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Frank and Eleanor Deloris Roy Bender.
On June 15, 1976, she was married to Robert Lee “Bob” Hornbeck, who survives.
Also surviving are two brothers, Brad Bender of North Carolina, and Brian Bender of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Debbie Swisher of Fairmont, Jo Aebi and Ann Begley, both of Raleigh, N.C.
One sister, Sharon Bender Coley, preceded her in death.
She had worked at the Tygart Hotel and as a waitress at the City Restaurant. She was a companion with Independent Living and was an avid card player. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Elkins.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Saturday morning, she will be moved to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. the funeral hour. Bernice M. Hosey
Bernice Marie Hosey, 81, of Route 3, Buckhannon, the Hinkleville community, died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at her home.
She was born July 28, 1921, in Braxton County, and resided in Webster County, and was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mae Campbell Snyder.
She was united in marriage in 1940 to French Hosey, who preceded her in death in 1969.
She is survived by one daughter, Lil, and son-in-law, David Herod, of Route 3, Buckhannon, the Glady Fork community; three grandchildren, Andrew Mitchell Wood of Route 3, Buckhannon, Jody N. Washington of Waynesville, Mo., and Rynea Herod of Buckhannon; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, June Wood, and son-in-law, Ronald V. Wood, and two sisters and one brother.
She was a member of Good Hope Tabernacle Church.

Robert “Bob” Hosey, 71, a resident of Dailey where he resided with his son, Terry, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at 2:50 p.m. in the Davis Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
Born May 4, 1932, in Beverly, he was the son of the late Richard C. and Flora I. Underwood Hosey.
Mr. Hosey is survived by his only son, Terry R. Hosey of Dailey; five brothers, Arnett Hosey and wife, Marion, and Lawrence Hosey, all of Beverly, Casper Hosey and wife, Pat, of Niagara Falls, N.Y., Mike McGee and wife, Donna, of North Tonawanda, N.Y., and Wendell Hosey and wife, Pat, of Covington, Va.; and two sisters, Brenda Hosey Craft and husband, Berley, of Covington, Va., and Leagh Perez and husband, John, of Selma, Va.
Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Marion Underwood of Lockport, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was one brother, Arnold Underwood.
He was an employee of Occidental Petroleum Corp. in Buffalo, N.Y., until becoming disabled and retired due to his health. He attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Before becoming disabled, Bob was an avid fisherman and liked to hunt.

Rachel Kalar Hovatter, 74, a resident of the Bull Run community of St. George, departed this life during her sleep early Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 2003, at her home. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to heart failure.
She was born Aug. 19, 1928, at Parsons, a daughter of the late Lloyd W. Kalar and Lula Schoonover Kalar.
On March 11, 1946, at Oakland, Md., she was married to Branson “Gay” Hovatter, who survives.

Hovatter, Fairmont; one brother, Robert Kalar, Parsons; four sisters, Gladys Barb, Georgia, Helen Robinson, Michigan, Mary Hovatter and Hilda Strawderman, both of Parsons.
She was preceded in death by one brother, John Kalar; and two sisters, Francis Parsons and Lucille Hinchman.
She attended the schools at Porterwood and Parsons. She was a homemaker. She loved embroidery and was a noted baker and cook. She attended the Sycamore Grove Church at Bull Run for many years and the First Church of the Nazarene of Parsons.

On May 12, 1955, she was united in marriage to the former Lambert T. Howard, who preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 2003.
Alma is survived by one daughter, Nancy Brown of Marydell, Md.; and two sons, John M. Howard and Steven Howard, both of Maryland.
Also surviving are two sisters, Florence Adams of Elkins and Mona Seigel of Maryland.
Also surviving are three grandchildren, Jeffrey McCelroy, Leanna Howard and Chelsey Brown; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her husband and parents were one son, David Howard; five sisters, May, Mable Yokum, Virginia Wyatt, Gladys Reda and Betty Holfeltz; and five brothers, John Nephi, Thomas Jr., Elmer E., Martin L. and Loye Lee.
Alma was employed as a cook and also as a salesperson in a large department store in Maryland.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints.
She loved reading the Bible and cooking, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.

Bula Bell Howard, 66, of Rock Cave, Holly Grove community, died at 11:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003.
She was born Oct. 1, 1936, in Webster County, a daughter of the late Thomas Franklin and Elsie Currence IcIe.
She was married to John E. Howard on Nov. 12, 1963, who survives.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by six sons, Joseph and David of Rock Cave, John Howard of Buckhannon, Denny and wife, Elizabeth, of Buckhannon, Albert and wife, Betty, of Buckhannon, and Lloyd McIe of French Creek; five daughters, Carissa Saffle and husband, John, of Volga, Melissa O’Keefe and husband, Jon, of Buckhannon, Rosemary Robinson and husband, Richard, of Buckhannon, Loraine Hayhurst and husband, Roy, of Tallmansville, and Luvada Howard of Rock Cave; six brothers, Ronald McIe of Ohio, Lonnie McIe of Webster Springs, Leonard McIe of French Creek, Robert McIe of Crawford, Raymond McIe of Selbyville, and Russel McIe of Queens; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four children, Laurence McIe, Gayle McIe, Ronnie McIe and Kenny McIe; three sisters, Lena Mae McIe, Levada Croucher McIe and Bessie Browning; two brothers, James McIe and Junior McIe; and one daughter-in-law, Connie McIe.
Mrs. Howard was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother and wife, and a Methodist by faith.

Levi M. Howard
Levi Marshall Howard, 75, a resident of Shavers Run, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 4, 2003, at his residence. He had been in failing health for the past three years and his condition had declined in the past three months. Death was attributed to cancer.
He was born Dec. 10, 1927, in Elkwater, a son of the late Lenville and Rada May Lambert Howard.
He was the beloved husband of Arranna Lena Shrader, whom he married on June 12, 1955, who survives on Shavers Run.
He was the beloved father of two sons, W.R. "Randy" Howard of Mill Creek, and Curtis Michael Howard and wife, Cindy, of Huttonsville; and five daughters, Mrs. Scott (Sherry Lynn) Powell, Pamela Sue "Pam" Basil, Patricia Ann Howard and Marcia Lea Workman, all of Beverly, and Mrs. Ron (Crystal Renee) Taylor of East Dailey.
In addition to being suvived by his wife and children, he was the beloved grandfather of 13 grandchildren, Jason, Matthew, Sarah, Paul and Kyle Howard, Ashley Basil, Scott, Tim and Shawn Powell, Adam and Levi Workman, Brandon and Alexis Taylor.
Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and a host of friends from all over the world.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by one sister, Emma Gay Phillips Sullivan; and one brother, Burl Lee Howard.
He attended the schools of Randolph County and was a Protestant by faith. He was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, United Mine Workers Association District 31, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Association of Retired Persons.
He was a coal miner having been employed by the UMWA District 31. He had worked at several minesincluding the Badger Coal Company. On June 26, 1984, he became disabled at Point Mountain by a high power voltage accident, while employed by the Double D and T Coal mines.
He also worked for the shipyards in Maryland including the Maryland Drydock, Sparrows Point and the U.S. Coast Guard.
He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the occupation of Japan. He then served during the Korean Conflict with the 25th Infantry, Spearhead Division and was awarded several Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star and many other medals.
He was a very special man who never met a stranger. He loved the outdoors and especially camping with his family and friends. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gingsanger.
He will be sadly missed by many.

Lambert T. Howard
Lambert T. Howard. 76, a resident of Genesis Nursing Home in Baltimore, Md., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
Born July 8, 1926, at Elkwater, he was the son of the Daniel and Arminta Currence Howard.
On May 12, 1955, he was united in marriage to the former Alma M. Yokum, who survives in Baltimore, Md.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Nancy Brown of Marydell, Md.; two sons, John M. Howard of Maryland, and Steven Howard of Maryland; one sister, Bernice See of Valley Head; one brother, Pearl Howard of Warren, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jeffery McCelroy, Leanna Howard and Chelsey Brown; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were one son, David Howard; one sister, Wanda Riffle; and three brothers, John, Henry and Darris Howard.
Mr. Howard was employed by the A.A. Company Housing Authority for 12 years. He was also a sheet metal mechanic for 29 1/2 years.
He enjoyed fishing and reading science fiction novels, and was a member of the Patrick Henry Post American Legion.

Beulah V. Howell
Beulah Virginia Howell, 93, a resident of Route 3, Elkins, the Haddix Road, and a resident of Herndon, Va., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, in the Reston Memorial Hospital in Reston, Va.
She was born Oct. 30, 1910, at Huttonsville, the daughter of the late John Stewart Pingley and the late Rosella Sheffer Pingley.
She was married to Howard Guy Howell Sr., who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Mae Davis and husband, Mike, of Herndon, Va., and Carolyn Elizabeth Pearson and husband, Ed, of Hopkins, S.C.; one son, Howard Guy Howell Jr. and wife, Mary, of Elkins; two grandchildren, Matthew and Virginia Rose; one stepgrandson, Ed; one great-grandchild and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death was a sister, Hoda Caplinger.
Mrs. Howell attended the schools of Randolph County and Davis & Elkins College. She taught school in her earlier years and was a homemaker.
She was a Presbyterian by faith.

Dorsey R. Howell, 66, of Wadsworth, Ohio, died Nov. 23, 2003, at his home.
He was born Feb. 17, 1937, in Elkins, to Brown and Daisy Hyatt Howell.
He married Mary Bunting on Oct. 4, 1958. He was a resident of Wadsworth, Ohio, for 40 years and retired from GTE as a service manager with 31 years of service.
He was a member of Wadsworth Eagles 2117 and Loyal Oak Veterans of Foreign Wars 4466.
He was preceded in death by one son, David K. Howell; his parents and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Howell; two daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Belinda) Brown of Norton, Ohio, and Mary Prunty of Barberton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Zak-Monbarren Funeral Home in Doylestown, Ohio, with the Rev. Jerry Hackworth officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wadsworth, Ohio.  From 26 Nov 2003.

Estel Howell
Estel Blake “Eck” Howell, 85, a resident of the Valley Bend community, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2003, at his home.
A native of Randolph County, he was born in Cravensdale, a son of the late Worthy Wilmoth “W.W.” and Luceba Fansler Howell. He was a descendant of two of Randolph County’s pioneer families.
He was educated in the one-room Fairview School in Cravensdale. His family moved to Beverly, where they operated a large farm during the Great Depression. The farm was featured in Golden Seal Magazine in 1998 titled “Mountain Cattle Drives,” a real-life account of driving cattle from the Howell farm in Beverly to mountain pasture land in Osceola for summer grazing. The article was written by Robert and Judith Whitcomb, who also authored the 52-page biography titled “Eck and Helen Howell, Remembering the Old Times.”
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II and also was a woodsman, miner and heavy equipment operator and continued to operate bulldozers until a recent decline in his health. He was an avid gardener and was gifted in the art of “grafting,” a technique used in horticulture with fruit-bearing trees. He was instrumental in the organization of the Greenwood Cemetery Association in Valley Bend and was a past member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 of the American Legion.
While serving in the U.S. Army, he was united in marriage to the former Helen Virginia Pritt on July 2, 1943, in San Bernadino, Calif. It was a loving marriage spanning more than 62 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Howard W. and Gale P. Howell of the Gilman community; two daughters and sons-in-law, Arleen and Don Starn of Valley Bend and Lynda and Jim Stottlemyer of Elkins; a sister, Ruby Poe of Elkins; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Harry, Howard, Loyd, Verl and Stewart Howell.
The family will receive friends today from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Tomblyn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Tomblyn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Walter Blough and the Rev. Ellis Conley officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Valley Bend. Peter Howell
Peter “Vyrle” Howell, 82, a resident of 7 Moore St., Elkins, departed this life Saturday morning, April 12, 2003, at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He had been in declining health for the past two weeks.
He was born Sunday, June 20, 1920, in Beverly, the son of the late Worthy W. Howell and Luceba Fansler Howell.
On Feb. 5, 1939, at Beverly, he was married to the former Grace Ramsey, who preceded him in death on April 29, 1965.
Surviving are one daughter, Nellie Channell and husband, Gary, Elkins; one brother, Eck Howell, Valley Bend; one sister, Ruby Poe, Elkins; four grandchildren, Christal L. Channell and Gary L. Channell Jr., both of Elkins, and Juanita and Eddie Howell, address unknown; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Silas Worthy Howell and Edward Vyrle “Pete” Howell; four brothers, Lloyd, Harry Carl, Howard and Stewart Howell; one sister, Alice Howell; and one grandson, Shawn Dale Channell.
He attended the schools of Randolph County, was an avid farmer and retired from Coastal Lumber Co. after 27 years of service.

William Howell
William “Bill” Howell, 98, of Beaver Creek and a resident of Nella’s for the past three months, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
Born May 5, 1905 at Faulkner, he was the son of the late Joe Eye Long and Emma Jane Howell.
In 1926, he was united in marriage to the former Rosie Lee Watson, who preceded him in death on May 12, 1991.

William Howell
William “Bill” Howell, 98, a resident of Beaver Creek, Beverly, and a resident of Nella’s for the past three months, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, in the Davis Memorial Hospital emergency room. He had been in his usual health; however, death was unexpected.
Born May 5, 1905, at Bowden, he was the son of the late Joe I. Long Howell and Emma Jane Howell Howell.

Bill is survived by five daughters, Luceba Graham and husband, Delmos, and Virginia Howell, all of Beverly, Norma Chambers and husband, Roger, of Elkins, Marie Vangi of Pennsylvania, and Wanda McCauley, address unknown; eight sons, Willie Howell and wife, Nancy, Richard Howell, Otto Howell and wife, Joyce, Don Howell and wife, Joyce, and John Howell and wife, Alna, all of Beverly, Bruce Howell and wife, Nancy, of Elkins, Okey Howell and wife, Minnie, of Belington, and Jim Howell and wife, Louise, of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Anna Pudder of Elkins, and Rosie Daff, a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center; two half sisters, Sis McCauley of Chenoweth Creek and Joann Cummings of Elkins; and one half brother, Olan Shifflett of Michigan.
Also surviving are more than 100 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were an infant daughter, Roanna Howell; two sons, Tommy and Burlin Howell; one sister, Louise Bennett; three brothers, Jake, Homer and Clifford Howell; and two half brothers, Joe and Kelly Shifflett.
Bill did many things in his life and was a coal miner and woodsman. He was formerly employed by Labcraft and at the Helimeta Co. in New Jersey. Bill retired from the Elkins Lumber Co. where he worked as a lumber stacker until becoming disabled.
In January 1992, he became an ordained minister under the United Christian Church and Ministerial Association. He preached at several Elkins churches and surrounding churches. Bill spread the word of God to everyone.
He attended the Abundant Life Christian Center and was a former member of the National Rifle Association.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Bill loved everyone and those who knew him loved him as much. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and everyone whose lives that he touched.
Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, Bill will be moved to the Abundant Life Christian Center for visitation from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Curlie Ray Jr., pastor of the church, will officiate. Mildred O. Howes
Mildred Olive Howes, 85, of Fayetteville, N.C., died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Village Freen Nursing Home in Fayetteville.
She was born June 14, 1918, at French Creek, the daughter of the late Hindman VanGilder and Martha Susan Lewis VanGilder.
She was married to Arthur Howes, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Arthur Howes of Hope Mills, N.C.; one daughter, Tressa Williford of Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her husband and parents were six sisters and seven brothers.
She was a retired LPN and a Methodist by faith.

Carol Ann (Detamore) Huffman, 66, of the Selbyville Community, died at her sons home, Sidney Huffman, Tuesday, May 20, 2003, after a long period of declining health.
She was born May 28, 1936, in Centralia, a daughter of the late James Maracellus and Letha A. Frame Detamore. She was raised at Alton.
She is survived by four sons, Virgil Huffman and wife, Lorena, of Creston, Ohio, Arnold Huffman and wife, Connie, of Creston, Ohio, Sidney Huffman and wife, Krista, of Buckhannon, and Kevin Huffman of Tallmansville; two daughters, Rachel Adams and husband, Herman, of Selbyville, and Wilma Mattingly and husband, John, of Lodi, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Jim Detamore of West Milford, Lawrence Detamore of Alton and Richard Detamore of Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Clara Bendel of Spencer, Ohio, and Sylvia Price of Nova, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, George and Harley Detamore; and six sisters, Helen Davis, Lucille White, Virginia Hosey, Ruth Wightman, Juanita Carpenter and Arlene Grice.
Mrs. Huffman was a member of the Pleasant Dale United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school.
Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel today from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Deloris E. Huffman
Deloris Ellen Huffman, 49, of Dryfork, departed this life Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown to be with her heavenly father after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born June 8, 1954, at Fellowsville, the daughter of the late David Howard Lipscomb and Clariece Ellen Messenger Bittinger, who survives.
She is survived by her husband, Harvey Keith Huffman; one son, Allen Keith Huffman and wife, Amy, of Maysville; one daughter, Patricia Huffman Thompson and husband, Steven, of Dryfork; three sisters, Barbara Lynn Nazelrod of Oakland, Md., Carolyn Annette Dumire of Moatsville and Janet Arlene Lipscomb of Parsons; four brothers, David Michael Lipscomb, Larry Allen Lipscomb, Marvin Howard Lipscomb and Arnold Wayne Lipscomb, all of Oakland, Md.; and five grandchildren, Stacie Barrick, Tessie and Skylor Huffman, and Micah and Karlie Thompson.
One brother, Roger Dale Lipscomb, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Huffman was a homemaker and cook by profession.
She was a Christian by faith and a member of the Dryfork Assembly of God Church where she was also active with the choir. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Canaan Valley Fire Department.
Friends were received at the Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be at the Dryfork Assembly of God Church at 2 p.m. today. Lenore Cunningham Huffman, 77, a former resident of 308 Goff St., Elkins, and more recently a resident of 831 Maple Court, Dunedin, Fla., departed this life Friday morning, March, 14, 2003, at the Mease Dunedin Hospital at Dunedin, Fla.
She was born Friday, Dec. 18, 1925, at Hanging Rock, the only daughter of the late French A. Cunningham and Nellie C. Cunningham.
On June 10, 1945, at Elkins, she was married to Elvin David Huffman, who preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1996.
Surviving are one son, Thomas David Huffman and wife, Cindy, Dunedin, Fla.; three grandchildren, Christopher David Huffman, Dunedin, Fla., Catherine Jackson, New Port Richey, Fla., and James Manley, Morgantown; and three great-grandchildren in Florida.
A graduate of Catherman’s Business School in Cumberland, Md., she was employed by the Farmers’ Home Administration in Franklin. Later she was the purchasing agent for Kelly Foundry of Elkins. She retired from the position of legal secretary for the attorneys of the Child Advocate Office in Elkins.
Mrs. Huffman was a former member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church of Elkins. She was a member of the Suncoast New Neighbors Club and First United Methodist Church of Dunedin, Fla., where she worked as a volunteer receptionist and office worker.

Phyllis Huffman
Phyllis Huffman, 59, a former resident of Elkins, and a patient in Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon, passed away Thursday afternoon, Jan. 9, 2003, in the nursing home.
She was born Oct. 25, 1943, in Weston, a daughter of Pauline Davis Curtis, who resides in Jane Lew, and the late Rex Curtis.
She was married to Robert "Bob" Huffman, who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1997.
Surviving are one son, Steven Bryant; and one daughter, Whitney Bryant; one brother, Craig Curtis of Petersburg; and one grandchild.
She was a graduate of Webster Springs High School and attended Dabney S. Lancaster Community College near Covington, Va., for two years. She was employed by the U. S. government, first with the Social Security Administration and later with the Department of Labor before becoming disabled. She was formerly active in the Delphia Rebekah Lodge No. 62 of Elkins and the Randolph County Humane Society prior to her illness.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. The Rev. Dr. Daniel Bryan will officiate and interment will follow in St. Brendan Cemetery near Elkins. At the request of the deceased, flowers are to be omitted. Sarah A. Huffman
Sarah Alice Huffman, 74, of Dryfork, passed away Monday, May 5, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
She was born June 13, 1928, in Dry Fork, a daughter of the late John Leslie White Sr. and Minnie Bonner White.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Robert Lee Huffman Sr.; two sons, Robert Lee Huffman Jr. and Harvey Keith Huffman, both of Dryfork; a daughter, Kathy L. Marra, also of Dryfork; five sisters, Olive Cardella, Boca Raton, Fla., Dorothy Elza, Baltimore, Md., Shirley Chew, Painesville, Ohio, Janet Williams, Glen Burnie, Md., and Connie Deadrick, Petersburg; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Mrs. Huffman was a former member of the Tucker County Republican Committee and a homemaker.

Filbert C. Humphrey
Filbert Clay Humphrey, 65, of Kanawha Head, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at 2:35 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
He was born March 10, 1938, at Kanawha Head, a son of the late James Edward Humphrey and Eva Bernice Riley Humphrey.
He is survived by five brothers, Minter J. Humphrey of Kanawha Head, Harley Clifford Humphrey of Brushy Fork Road, Buckhannon, Parley Ervin Humphrey of Crawford, Maynard Doris Humphrey of Maryland, and Troy Guy Humphrey of Crawford; one sister, Flossie Humphrey of Kanawha Head; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Mr. Humphrey was preceded in death by two sisters, Elda Alberta Humphrey and Virgie Meeks.
Mr. Humphrey was a gas well tender and a Methodist by faith.

Rose Ann Humphrey, 59, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Thursday evening, March 27, 2003, at her home. She had been in her usual health and death was attributed to a massive heart attack.
She was born Sept. 3, 1943, at Paintsville, Ky., a daughter of the late Kendrick “Doc” Kimbleton and Olga Mae Webb Kimbleton.
On June 11, 1988, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Parsons, she was married to Ellis Parker “Duke” Humphrey Jr., who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Chad Andrew Humphrey, and two daughters, Sue Elizabeth “Sue Beth” Palma and Whitney Gail Harper, all of Parsons; three sisters, Florence “Ruth” Moor and husband, Joseph Carroll, LaJara Colo., Olive Jane Valdez and husband, Demetrio, Antonito, Colo., Debra Jane Meadows and husband, Frank, Brighton, Colo.; two grandchildren, Nicholas Christian Lee Palma and Antonio Cruzito Palma, both of Parsons; a special niece, Sharon Gail Blanton, Denver, Colo.; and six nephews.
She is preceded in death by one brother, John Paul Kimbleton.
She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1961. She was a secretary for the former Parsons Tannery until its closing, and at the time of her death, she was office administrator for the Kingsford Charcoal Co. with 28 years of service. She was a member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church, serving as secretary for the board of trustees, treasurer for the Sunday school department, a member of the United Methodist Women’s Circle and the choir. Rose Ann was well known for her beautiful smile and gifted voice.

Linda S. Hutchison
Linda Sue Hutchison, 50, departed this life to be with our Lord, Sunday, April 6, 2003, in her home at Kerens after an 11-month battle with lung cancer.
She was born Dec. 21, 1952, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Sterling A. and Alta J. Bender, of Coalton.
She graduated from Coalton High School in 1972, and was married to Randy L. Hutchison, of Dierks, Ark., on Aug. 5, 1972.
She bore two children, Wendy R. Smith of Kerens, and Larry P. “Chuck” Hutchison of Beverly.
She worked hard as a homemaker and at various jobs. Her last place of employment was Scotties Restaurant in Elkins.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Lee and Danny Ray Bender.
She is survived by her four brothers, Gary A. Bender of Lenoir, N.C., Sterling E. Bender of Elkins, Randy W. Bender of Kerens and Timmie R. Bender of Mill Creek; and two sisters, Norma J. Stanton of Coalton, and Connie M. Williams of Ellamore.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and loyal friend. She would often put others needs before her own. But her greatest joy and reason for living was her four grandchildren, Brett A. and Courtney N. Smith and Dylan S. and Caitlyn M. Hutchison. She was so very proud of them. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Family and friends are welcome to join in celebrating her life at the Leading Creek Volunteer Fire Department on April 18 at 5 p.m. Her body was donated to the Human Gift Registry in Morgantown and was transported by the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home. Vera B. Hutton
Vera Bowling Hutton died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, Charlottesville, Va., where she was a resident. She was 82.
Mrs. Hutton had been in declining health for years, affected by Alzhimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
She was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Bluefield to Frank Newton and Grace French Bowling.
After attending Bluefield College and Longwood College (then Farmville State Teachers College), she received a B.A. degree in library science from the University of West Virginia.
She met her husband, Ernest W. Hutton, then of Fairmont, at the university.
They were married on Oct. 4, 1941. Her husband survives her.
They have three children, all surviving: Ernest W. Hutton, Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.; Frank Jonathan Hutton, New York, N.Y.; and Douglas B. Hutton, Baltimore, Md.; and seven grandchildren.
While Mr. Hutton served in the Army Air Force in Alaska in the early 1940s, Mrs. Hutton taught in Bluefield public schools. Upon Mr. Hutton’s return, they moved to Ft. Myers, Fla. Mr. Hutton rejoined the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, N.Y. in 1945; the family transferred to Waynesboro, Va., with the opening of a new facility in 1954. Mr. and Mrs. Hutton moved to Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, Charlottesville, in 1994.
Mrs. Hutton was active in the Friends of the Waynesboro Public Library and the Waynesboro Chapter of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She was a member of the Phi Beta Phi sorority at West Virginia University, and participated in local chapter activities. She had a lifelong interest in genealogy.
A memorial service and reception is planned for Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Westminster-Canterbury. Interment is planned at a later date at the Old Stone Church Cemetery in Huttonsville. Willie Granville Hyre, 94, a former resident of Chenoweth Creek Road, Elkins, and for the past one and one-half years a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, departed this life Wednesday evening, Oct. 22, 2003, at the center. He had been in declining health for the past month.

Willie G. Hyre
Willie Granville Hyre, 94, a former resident of Chenoweth Creek Road, Elkins, and for the past one and one half years a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, departed this life Wednesday evening, Oct. 22, 2003, at the center. He had been in declining health for the past month.
Mr. Hyre was born Thursday, Dec. 10, 1908, in Randolph County, the son of the late Blaine Hyre and Lucy Hyre.
On Feb. 6, 1938, he was married to the former Virginia Evans, the daughter of the late Harley and Lena Evans, who survives.
They had two sons, William David Hyre and Gary Russell Hyre, who preceded them in death.
Surviving are one brother, Loren “Bus” Hyre of Elkins; one granddaughter, Christine Hyre Shifflett and husband, Terry, of Elkins; and one great-grandson, Tyler Lee Shifflett of Elkins.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and sons were three sisters, Virgie Hyre, Alma Hyre Thomas and Josephine Hyre Sexton; and two brothers, Russell Hyre and Allen Hyre.
He worked for the Randolph County Board of Education as a school bus driver for 30 years and was the maintenance man and custodian for the First United Methodist Church at Elkins for 35 years, where he was also a member.
He was an active member of the Hart Chapel Church on Chenoweth Creek Road near Elkins. He served on the church board and also as a trustee for 45 years.
He was a member of the Elkins Lodge No. 116 Independent Order of Odd Fellows for 54 years.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. On Saturday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, the Elkins Lodge No. 116 IOOF will conduct ritualistic services. On Sunday, Mr. Hyre will be moved to the Hart’s Chapel Church at Chenoweth Creek, where final rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Pastor David M. Collins and the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens, formerly the IOOF Cemetery, at Elkins.
