Helen M. Back
Helen Mae Miller Back, 74, a resident of the Dartmoor community near
Belington, departed this life at 4 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, in Ruby
Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. She had been in declining health for quite some
time.
She was born May 17, 1929, at Phoenixville, Pa., the daughter of the Albert
Joseph and Grace Thomas Miller.
On June 28, 1954, at Phoenixville, Pa., she was united in marriage to Matthew
Back, who survives at their home.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Robert M. Back of
Dartmoor, and Matthew Back and wife, Barbara of Coatesville, Pa.; one daughter,
Patricia Arlene Delnero and husband, James, of Phoenixville, Pa.; one sister,
Anita Miller, and one brother, Robert Miller, both of Pennsylvania; 10
grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda
Weaver; one sister, Betty Dean; and one infant brother.
Mrs. Back attended the schools of Phoenixville, Pa. She was a homemaker and a
member of the Church of the Brethren in Junior.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 2 p.m. to 4
p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Sunday from the
funeral home parlor with the Rev. Terry Gower officiating. Interment will follow
in the Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Junior. The Talbott Funeral Home in

Norma J. Bacorn
Norma Jean Bacorn, 68, of 146 Water St., Salem, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, in Sunrise Nursing Home in Salem.
She was born April 5, 1934, in Weston, a daughter of the late Lenore Bacorn.
Surviving are two cousins, Eric Bacorn and Evan Bacorn, both of Buckhannon; a special friend, Dana
Bacorn, Buckhannon; and a half brother, William Bacorn, Cortland, Ohio.
She was a homemaker.
Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Friday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, with the Rev. William C. Eskew Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Rock Cave Cemetery in Rock Cave. From 2 Jan 2003.
Derris A. Badgett
Derris A. Badgett, 55, a resident of the Beverly Mobile Home Park in Beverly,
passed away at 10:25 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at his residence. He had been
in usual health and death was sudden and unexpected.
Born Sept. 16, 1948, in Fairmont, he was the son of the late Avin Badgett and
the late Virginia Della Weese Badgett Armstrong.
Derris is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Della Martin and husband Mike
of Pennsylvania; one sister, Penny Kay Kalenak of Aliquippa, Pa.; several
half-sisters and five brothers, Tom Badgett of Elkins, Alvin Badgett of Mill
Creek, Harrison Pennington and Carman Pennington, both of Elkins, and Frank
Pennington of Valley Bend.
Also surviving are a grandson, Andrew Roy Reed, several nieces and nephews and a
host of friends.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were three brothers, Dan Pennington,
David Jacob and Denny Fawley.
Derris was formerly employed by Burns Motor Freight as a truck driver. He
attended the schools of Randolph County and was a former member of the Moose
Lodge. He collected eagles and did a lot of wood carvings. Derris also liked to
fish and loved talking to his family on the phone. He was a Protestant by faith.
He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict.
He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home. The
H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion will make the presentation of the American
flag. At the request of the deceased, the remains will be cremated.

Carol L. Bailey
Carol Lynn Bailey, a resident of Clifton Heights, Pa., and Beverly, died
Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, Pa.
Mrs. Bailey was born in Croome Station, Md., and was raised in Philadelphia. She
was the daughter of the late Lester and Mary Swearinger. She was a graduate of
John Bartram High School.
Mrs. Bailey was a resident of Clifton Heights for the last 35 years. She has
also maintained a residence in Beverly for the last seven years.
She worked for many years as a private investigator and was actively involved in
the POW-MIA issue, making many trips to Washington, D.C,. on that matter.
Mrs. Bailey will be remembered for her sharp wit, humor, intellect, courage and
her love and generosity to family and friends. She was an avid reader, a lover
of art, music travelling, restoring her homes and genealogy.
Her family steeps with history on Mrs. Bailey’s paternal side. Her ancestors
arrived in America in the 1600s. The Swearingens were some of the first
inhabitants and settled in St. Mary’s City in Maryland. They also owned Canaan
Valley in West Virginia. The book, “Blue Jacket, War Chief of the Shawnees,”
was written by a distant cousin. On her maternal side, she was related to John
Hart, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. A distant ancestor arrived
from France and fought alongside of LaFayette during the Revolutionary War. Her
great-uncle was the first forest ranger in the Monongahela National Forest. Her
tenacious study of her heritage revealed many aspects of which she was very
proud.
Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Tygart Valley Baptist Church in Beverly, and
attended the First Baptist Church of Collingdale in Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Mary and Donald
Brown, and two brothers, Ted and Gary Swearinger.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Bailey; her daughter, Vicki Quinlan of
Wilmington, Del.; her son, Timothy Moore of Clifton Heights, Pa.; her sisters,
Lois Steinmetz of Aldan, Pa., and Jean Warlow of North Carolina; her three
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mrs. Bailey will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First
Baptist Church of Collingdale, on Clifton and Andrews Avenue in Collingdale, Pa.

Carrol A. Bailey
Carrol A. Rowan Bailey, 86, a resident of 158 Randolph St., Buckhannon, died
at 11:35 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at her home.
She was born March 3, 1917, in Upshur County, the daughter of the late Arthur
Morgan Rowan and Susan Elizabeth Friel Rowan.
On May 28, 1933, she was married to Virgil Jennings Bailey, who preceded her in
death on Nov. 14, 1981.
Surviving are five sons, Dennis Ervin Bailey, Peachland, N.C., James Elmer
Bailey, Newton Falls, Ohio, and Mayford Lynn Bailey, Gary Dwayne Bailey and
Meredith Glen Bailey, all of Buckhannon; seven daughters, Anna Bennett, Marie
Bonner, Alice Devericks and Rita Barnett, all of Buckhannon, Frances Peters,
Gassaway, Marie England, French Creek, and Thelma Dietrich, Rock Cave; two
brothers, Dariel Rowan, Meadville, Pa., and Delmar Rowan, Cowen; four sisters,
Verna Cunningham, Somerset, Ohio, Wilma Tenney, Meadville, Pa., Thelma Salsbury,
Conneaut, Ohio, and Edna Burford, Clarion, Pa.; a grandson whom she raised,
Randall Dwayne Bailey, Buckhannon; 54 grandchildren; 89 great-grandchildren and
9 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Arthur Lee Bailey and an infant son; two
daughters, Wilda Richards and an infant daughter; two brothers, Otis Rowan and
Chester Rowan; one sister, Marguerite Holden; four grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker and a member of South Buckhannon Mission Church.
She loved poetry and had nine books of poetry published.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Poling-St. Clair
Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Ed
Lowther will officiate and interment will follow in the Bailey Cemetery in

Claude G. (Bud) Bailey, 72, of Route 2, Box 2A,
French Creek, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at 2 p.m. at his residence in French
Creek.
He was born May 4, 1930, at Buckhannon, a son ofthe late Troy Gay and Sarah Donnas Simmons Bailey.
On Nov. 3, 1952, he married Betty L. Black
Bailey, who survives. They had been married for 50 years.
Also surviving are one son, Randy Bailey and
wife, Renee Beer, French Creek; four daughters, Debbie Woody, Buckhannon,
Barbara Lee and husband, the Rev. Jerry Lee, French Creek, Linda Bailey,
Bridgeport, and Melissa Poling, Buckhannon; one brother, H. Glenn Bailey,

all of French Creek; six granddaughters, Misty Woody, Clarksburg, Casey Kelley

Neb., Jessica Casto and husband, Chad, Wahiawa, Hawaii, Sarah Lee, French Creek,
and Lauren Poling, Buckhannon; three great-grandsons, Jonathan Woody and Jared

He was preceded in death by one brother, James
D. Bailey; one sister, Mary Mildred Bailey; one grandson, Jacob Israel Poling;
and one granddaughter, Rose Amy Poling.
He worked for Corhart in maintenance. He served
in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the United Brick and Clay
Workers Local 477 and attended Faith Tabernacle.

JoHanna Nichole Bailey, 4 days old, of Fort Ashby, died Tuesday, March 11,
2003, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
She was born on March 7, 2003, at Morgantown, she was the infant daughter of
Charles A. “Chuck” Helmick and Melissa D. Bailey of Fort Ashby.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Debbie Jo Bailey.
Surviving in addition to her parents, are one brother, Robert Camren Aronhalt of
Fort Ashby; her maternal grandfather, Donald Bailey of Petersburg; paternal
grandparents, Jackson L. and Anna Lee Helmick and Darlena K. and Jack Croston,
all of Parsons; maternal great-grandparents, Arnold G. and Eva L. Bailey and
Virginia Pritts, all of Keyser; paternal great-grandmother, Eloise Smith of
Parsons; two aunts, two uncles and a cousin, Devin Michael Nine.

John Wendel Bailey, 85, a resident of Route 2, Box 302, Buckhannon, died
Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
He was born April 17, 1918, in Tallmansville, the son of the late John A. and
Martha Byrd Bailey.
His wife, Clara Miller Bailey, preceded him in death.
Surviving are one sister, Tillie Quick of Buckhannon; and several nieces and
nephews.
Mr. Bailey worked as a coal miner.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Poling-St. Clair

Gladys G. Bain
Gladys Gwendolyn (Alt) Bain, 84, of Baltimore, Md., and formerly of Brushy
Run, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore.
Born July 9, 1918, in Brushy Run, she was the daughter of the late Scott R. Alt
and Effie (Whezel) Alt. She was also preceded by one son, Larry Wilson; three
brothers, Russell Alt, Galen Alt and Titus Alt; and five sisters, infant Goldie
Alt, Viola Smith, Vernie Whetzel, Mary Setzer and Hazel Cosner.
Surviving are one daughter, Gwendolyn Barnes of Kearneysville; one sister,
Dorothy Sears of Petersburg; two brothers, Archie Alt of Sparta, Mich., and
Victor Alt of Baltimore; two grandchildren, Christine and Kenny Wilson of
Baltimore; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Alt Cemetery in Brushy

Dorcas Weese Baker
Dorcas Naomi Weese Baker, 69, a native of Montrose and a resident of
Houston, Texas, departed this life Wednesday morning, Dec. 24, 2003, at the
Northeast Medical Center at Humble, Texas, following a long illness.
She was born Friday, Jan. 26, 1934, at Montrose, the daughter of the late Robert
Roscoe Weese and Beulah Cevilla Murphy Weese
On Sept. 19, 1967, in Rochester, N.Y., she was married to Johnny Baker, who
survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Sheila Bird and husband, Alan, of Joshua,
Texas; one sister, Drema Davidson and husband, Clayton, of Magnolia, Texas; two
grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Baker had worked as the secretary to the director of nursing at the John
Hopkins School of Nursing at Baltimore, Md., and was a member of the Leading
Creek Primitive Baptist Church at Montrose.

Mary Frances Baker, 91, a resident of Buckhannon and formerly of Moundsville,
passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, in the Holbrook Nursing Home in
Buckhannon.
She was born Oct. 13, 1912, in Moundsville, the daughter of the late Dale R. and
Bertha Risinger Chaddock.
She is survived by one daughter, Sarah Blackwell and husband, Pat, of
Buckhannon; a granddaughter, Amanda Chapman and husband, David, of Dublin, Pa.;
and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard,
Smith and Tom Chaddock; one sister, Phyllis Jane Yost, and an infant son and
daughter.
She was an elementary teacher in Marshall County where she taught for more than
30 years, was an active member of Simpson United Methodist Church, and was a
graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Moundsville, on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Dr.

Ball
Olga A. “Jerry” Ball, 85, a resident of Colonial Place,
passed away at 9:01 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital
emergency department.
She was born Nov. 13, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio, a
daughter of the late Mark and Polona Pavlas Sneberger.
She was thrice
married. First, in 1938, she married Carl “Bud” Bennett. In 1944, she married
Jack W. Miller, who preceded her in death in 1951. On June 5, 1955, she married
Willard Lynn Ball, who preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 2000.
Surviving are
two brothers, Anton Sneberger and wife, Lena, of Czar, and John E. Sneberger and
wife, Marion, of Helvetia; and three sisters, Katie Winemiller, Good Samaritan
Center at Belington, Vera Schneider of Pickens, and Rosie Ketterman and husband,
Cody, of Pickens.
Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Helen R.
Sneberger and Mary Waggoner Varner; a brother, Mark Sneberger; and a half
brother, Joseph Marnic.
During World War II, she was employed as a welder for
Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, Conn. She worked in nursing at Walter Reed Army
Hospital and as a beautician in the Washington, D.C. area from 1944 until 1951.
She worked for many years as a beautician in Millie Teets Beauty Shop in Elkins.
She was a homemaker and loved dogs and cooking for family and friends. She was a
member of St. Brendan Catholic Church in Elkins.
Friends may call from 5 p.m.
until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A prayer service will be
recited at 7:30 p.m. today by the Rev. Father Giles LaVasseur. On Tuesday, Mrs.
Ball will be moved to St. Brendan Catholic Church, where the Liturgy of
Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. The Rev. Father Giles LaVasseur
will be the celebrant and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens. The

Patricia L. Ball
Patricia Lee Ball, 59, of Route 2, Box 187, Buckhannon, died Friday, May 23,
2003, at her home.
She was born May 11, 1944, in Baltimore, Md., a daughter of the late Henry C.
Smith Jr. and the late Mary M. Jackson Smith.
On Aug. 31, 1963, she married Carl Ball, who survives.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Vicky Bennett,
Buckhannon, and Karen Crigger, Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Robert Alan Ball,
Darlington, Md., and David E. and wife, Paulette Ball, Buckhannon; two brothers,
Henry C. Smith Jr. and William A. Smith, both of Baltimore, Md.; two grandsons,
Travis Crigger, Baltimore, Md., and Cody Ball, Darlington, Md.; eight
granddaughters, Danielle Bennett and Abigail Bennett, both of Buckhannon, Megan

Rose M. Ball
Rose Marie Ball, 35, of Davis, passed away Oct. 21, 2003, at Ruby Memorial
Hospital in Morgantown. Death was sudden and unexpected.
She was born Nov. 21, 1967, in Fairmont, the daughter of Wilma Hill Brotosky of
Lowell, Mass., and the late James Lee Brotosky Sr.
She is survived by her husband, Rodney A. Ball of Davis; one son, Cody Allen
Ball, and one daughter, Hope Marie Ball, both at home.
Also surviving are five brothers, Lou and Linda Brotosky of Buffalo; Rosco and
Lisa Brotosky of Fairmont, David and Anita Brotosky of Bancroft, Charlie and
Carol Brotosky of Ashburham, Mass., and Mike and Tina Brotosky of Fairmont; and
two sisters, Bonnie Samyrick of Norristown, Pa., and Sissy Brotosky of Red
House, Md.
Mrs. Ball was employed as a cook at the Sawmill Restaurant in Davis.

Ernest Ronald Ballard, 85, of Longwood, Fla., died Tuesday, Aug. 12,
2003, at Florida Hospital Altamonte in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
He was born July 19, 1918, in Hightower, Ala, the son of the late John Ballard
and Maude Weir Ballard.
His wife, Ullainee Lois Ballard, preceded him in death on April 10, 2001.
Surviving are one son, Ronald Ballard, Apopka, Fla.; three grandsons, Ronald J.
Ballard of California, Christopher Ballard of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and
Jonathan Ballard of Jacksonville, Fla.; two granddaughters, Hallie Ballard of
Longwood, Fla., and Sarah Ballard of Winter Park, Fla.; and one
great-granddaughter, Josephine Ballard of California.

Anna Lydia Balli, 96, formerly of Pickens who made her home with her sister
and brother-in-law, Martha and Louie Jones of Volga, died Sunday, March 16,
2003, at her home.
She was born July 18, 1906, at Pickens, the daughter of the late John and Hulda
Heller Balli.
Surviving are one sister, Martha Jones and husband, Louie, of Volga; two nieces,
Rose Ann Cowgar of Hacker Valley and Hilda Burroughs of Waverly; one nephew,
James T. Fortune, Alexander, Va.; three great-nieces, Cindy Miller of Hacker
Valley, Janet Fliegel of Maineville, Ohio, and Carol Shaub of Washington, D.C.;
three great-great-nieces, Alexandria Fliegel of Maineville, Ohio, and Andi
Miller and Chloe Miller, both of Hacker Valley; and two great-great-nephews,
Jack Fliegel of Maineville, Ohio, and Elias Garden of Buckhannon.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Balli and an infant brother; six
sisters, Helena Balli, Alma Fortune, Olga Harris, Rosa Marts, Gertrude Balli and
Freda Balli; and one great-niece, Brenda Garden.
She was a retired farmer and had made Swiss cheese and butter from their farm in
Webster County. She was a retired teacher and taught 36 years in Webster County.
She was a Protestant by faith.

Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel where funeral services will be at 11 a.m.

Surviving are two daughters, Samantha and Ashley Barb, both of Indianapolis,

U.S. Army Military Police, Belington; one sister, Brenda Biller and husband,
Dave, of Belington; three nieces and three nephews.
Mr. Barb was a Protestant by faith and was a graduate of Philip Barbour High
School.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington Saturday from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour, when services will be conducted from the

Jennings Lee Barb, 66, a resident of the Laurel View Apartments in Belington,

Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past six months and death was

Michelle L. Barnes
Michelle Lee Barnes, 32, of Sheffield Village and formerly of Elyria, Ohio,
died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at University Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, after a
long battle with breast cancer.
She was born May 9, 1970, in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of Charles B. and Diane
Moran Barnes of Sheffield Village, Ohio.
She is also survived by two brothers, Michael H. Barnes, Elyria, Ohio, and James
R. Barnes, Lakewood, Ohio; one nephew and several nieces.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Gordon and Virginia
Moran of Monroe County; and her paternal grandparents, Charles and Louristine
Barnes of Davis.
Ms. Barnes was presently enrolled at Baldwin Wallace College where she was to
receive her teaching certificate in May. She attended Community United Methodist
Church, Elyria, Ohio, and was active with the youth group of the church. Most
recently she was employed at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis Friday from 6 p.m. to 9

She was born July 4, 1965, at Frankfort, Germany, a daughter of Naomi P. Bennett
Barrick of Kerens and the late Phillip R. Barrick Sr.
Surviving are one daughter, Paige M. Barrick of Kerens; two brothers, Phillip R.
Barrick Jr. of Kerens and Ralph J. Barrick of Pearland, Texas; one sister, Kathy
Kelley of Mill Creek; and her paternal grandmother, Viola Griffith of Elkins.
Also surviving are her special aunts and uncles, Norma and Fred Hornick of
Beverly, and Bernie and Pat Bennett of Elkins; and nieces and nephews, Jeff
Manolidis and wife, Laura, of Elkins, Kirstie and Shelby Barrick of Texas,
Chasity and Alyson Kelley of Mill Creek, and Noel Church Barrick of Elkins; and
many special friends.
Preceding her in death was her maternal grandfather, Ralph “Booge” Bennett;
her paternal grandparents, Joseph and Florence Barrick; and a half sister, Susie
Barrick.
She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1983. She had worked
as a waitress at Elkins Shoney’s and Elkins Pizza Hut prior to her illness.
She was a member of the Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars
Auxiliary of Elkins and was a Protestant by faith.

Laverna G. Barrickman, 67, a native of Dailey, and for the past 37 years a
resident of Barberton, Ohio, departed this life Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003.
She was born at Dailey.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Carroll Barrickman; two daughters, Dora
Winkler and husband, John, Norton, Ohio, and Kelly McGinnis and husband, Keith,
Doylestown, Ohio; one brother, Benjamin Jones and wife, Jean, Elkins; one
stepbrother, Howard Price and wife, Barb, Tennessee; one stepsister, Mildred
Spencer, Barberton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Adam, Abby and Alan Winkler and
Brandon McGinnis; and many other loving relatives.
She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Adrienna.

Connie Avis Barton, 91, of Route 1, New Milton, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at her
home.
She was born in Upshur County, April 15, 1912, a daughter of the late Samuel and
Dora Belle Smith Lewis.
She was married to Russell Irland Barton in 1930, at Clarksburg, who preceded
her in death on July 2, 1998.
She is survived by one son, Hayward A. Barton and wife, Cindy, of New Milton;
one daughter, Janet M. Smith and husband, Bryan of 1829 Wheeler Fork Road,
Horner; two grandchildren, June Smith Ables and husband, Bob, of Skin Creek
Road, Horner, and Bryan Michael Smith and wife, Beth Ann, of Jennings Run Road,
Weston.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.
Mrs. Barton was an avid gardener and homemaker. She was a Baptist by faith.

Irene T. Bassel, 81, a resident of 517 Buckhannon Manor, Buckhannon, and a
former resident of Mansfield Addition, Philippi, passed away at 11:35 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at her residence.
She was born March 17, 1921, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Dellet A. and
Helen (Simon) Lanham.
She was united in marriage in November 1945 to Jown W. Bassel, who preceded her
in death in 1978.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Jonnene Kay and husband, Dean Goglin,
Huntsville, Ala.; one son, Dana Lee and wife, Colleen Bassel, Kenai, Alaska;
four grandchildren, Phillip L. Goglin, Stephanie L. Goglin, Jamie L. Roberts and
Aimee I. Bassel; and two great-grandchildren, Aidan and Conner Roberts.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia McWhorter.
She was a retired clerk in a North Carolina assessor’s office. She was a 1939
graduate of Philippi High School. She attended Chapel Hill United Methodist
Church.

James E. Batdorf
James Ellis Batdorf, 94, a former resident of 1649 Taylor Ave., Elkins, and
for the past four years a resident of Colonial Place and Nella’s Inc.,
departed this life Monday morning, Jan. 27, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital. He
had been in declining health.
He was born Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1908, at Keyser, a son of the late John Ellis
Batdorf and Beulah Adams Batdorf.
During 1935, in Wheeling, he was married to the former Dorothy May “Dot”
Jones, who preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 1997.
Surviving are one daughter, Molly Adams White and husband, G.E. “Sonny”
White, Webster Springs; one son, John Ellis “Jack” Batdorf and wife, Bonnie,
Elkins; one grandson, Jeffrey Sechrengost; one granddaughter, Beth Batdorf
Corley and husband, Keith; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin Ellis Sechrengost
and Alexa Renee Corley, all of Elkins; and one niece, Joy Morris, Keyser.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Frances Smith; and an infant brother.
Mr. Batdorf was a graduate of Keyser High School and received his business
training at Potomac State College and Penn State University. He had worked as
the area manager of Columbia Gas of West Virginia, retiring on Nov. 1, 1972,
with 39 years of service. He was very active in civic work in Elkins. He was a
member and past president of the Elkins Rotary Club and the Elkins Chamber of
Commerce. He was a member of the Elkins Lodge No. 1135, BPOE and had served as
commissioner of the Elkins Housing Authority. He also held office in the
Randolph County United Way, the Central West Virginia Council of Boy Scouts of
America where he received the Silver Beaver Award, and the Mountaineer Chapter
Izaak Walton League. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where
he had served as Sunday School secretary and assistant chairman of the
administrative board for several years. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying
hunting and fishing during his retirement.

On March 24, 1993, she married Robert D. Baughman, who survives in French Creek.

great-grandchildren and a special friend and caretaker, Sandra Vose.
She was preceded in death by one son, David Allen Goodwin; two brothers, George
Conard Hinkle and Retice Hinkle Jr.; two sisters, Wilma Lanham and Ina McClain;
one grandson, Randall Douglas Chidester; and her first husband, Wilson W.
“Wick” Goodwin.
She was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith.

She was united in marriage on April 25, 1942, to Neason M. Baughman, who
preceded her in death on May 6, 1993.

Frey, Philippi; two brothers, Tommy Murphy, Volga, and Dale Murphy, Grafton;

She worked for 27 years at Austin Chemical Co., Myers, Pa. She was a Protestant
by faith.

She was born Monday, April 3, 1922, at Frank, the daughter of the late Mozell
Thompson and Lillie Jane Jones Thompson.
On Oct. 15, 1945, at Monterey, Va., she was married to Charles Donald Baxter,
who preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 1970.
Surviving are one aunt, Annabell Tibbs of Elkins; two nieces, Debbie Johnson of
Kansas City, Mo., and Scottie Baxter of New York; two nephews, Michael Waller,
U.S. Navy, retired, of Martinsburg and Daniel Sturkey and wife, Sonnetta, of
Columbus, Ohio.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband are one brother, Nathan
Waller; and one sister, Louise Dunn.
Jackie was a graduate of Riverside High School of Elkins and the Davis Memorial
Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at Davis Memorial
Hospital for 15 years and retired due to two heart attacks.
She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, was a member and secretary of the
Son’s and Daughter’s Club of the church, was a member of the church’s
board of trustees and was a member of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center
Board of Directors.

William P. Beathe Sr., 73, of Hinkleville, died Thursday, Oct. 2,
2003, at his home under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice.
He was born Sept. 20, 1930, at Camden on Gauley, Webster County, the son of the
late Edith Beathe Smith.
He was united in marriage on Dec. 23, 1947, to Doris Ann Sparks Beathe, who
survives.
He is also survived by one son, William P. Beathe Jr. of Buckhannon; two
daughters, Sherri Donna Hammons of Shelby, N.C., and Karen Lynn Morris of
Summersville; five grandchildren, Johnathon Hammons and Shawna Hammons

He was born Dec. 15, 1934, in Parsons, the son of the late David Palmer Beck and
Gertrude Hebb Beck.

He was an avid bicycle enthusiast and had a great love for radios and country
music, and loved animals.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Parsons
from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. On Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Beck will be moved to
the Parsons City Cemetery for a graveside service at 2 p.m. Pastor Allen D.

Delores Jean Becker, 69, of Davis, passed away June 14, 2003, at Monongalia
General Hospital in Morgantown.
She was born Aug. 28, 1933, in Parsons, a daughter of the late Forrest and Cleda
Harmon Buckley.
She married Kent E. Becker in April 1951. He preceded her in death in September
2000. One brother, Gerald F. Buckley, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Rocco (Kathy) Quattro of Davis and Mrs.
Nick (Vicki) Tartaglia of Willoughby, Ohio; five grandchildren, Shane and Rocco
"Brud" Quattro, and Nicole, Tiffany and Alicia Tartaglia; and two
great-grandchildren, Madison Jaye and Ethan Rocco Quattro.
Mrs. Becker was employed as a desk clerk at Blackwater Falls State Park. She was
a Protestant by faith.

Herbert E. Beckner, 71, of 112 Randolph St., Buckhannon, died Friday, Oct.
10, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
He was born March 11, 1932, in Buckhannon, the son of the late John Jennings
Beckner and Freda Gay Robinson Beckner.
On Oct. 4, 1954, he was married to Evelyn J. Shipman Beckner, who survives.
Surviving are one daughter, Vickie Keen of Buckhannon; one brother, Marlin
Beckner of Buckhannon; three sisters, Mavis Eskew of Buckhannon, Ruby Goodwin of
Amherst, Ohio, and Evelyn Jean Ryan of Painesville, Ohio; two grandsons, Michael
E. Hawkins of Buckhannon and Jeremy L. Hawkins of Buckhannon; one granddaughter,
Michelle L. Hawkins of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arnold Beckner, Dale Beckner and
Richard Beckner.
He was a meatcutter for Roll Star and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean
War.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post 7
American Legion,- and Eagles Lodge 4357, and was a former member of the
Federation of Musicians.
He was a Methodist by faith.

Margaret Jane Beckner, 64, of 133 Pocahontas St., Buckhannon, died Tuesday, Oct.
21, 2003, at her home.
She was born April 14, 1939, in Buckhannon, the daughter of the late Ernest
Auskings and Virginia Maxson Auskings.
On Aug. 10, 1956, she was married to Marlin Beckner, who survives.
Surviving are seven daughters, Terry Blagg of Buckhannon, Jodi Rinker of
Bridgeport, Kelly Austin of Buckhannon, Traci Corathers of Ellamore, Lori
Beckner of Weston, Lisa Beckner of Buckhannon and Cindy Hamilton of
Tallmansville; two sons, Jeff Beckner of Tallmansville and Marlin Beckner of
Buckhannon; 11 grandchildren including Bo Dwain and Sheena Beckner who were
raised by their grandparents; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Varion
“Benny” Simons of Niles, Ohio, and Alice Ann Smith of Buckhannon; and two
brothers, Wayne Auskings of Buckhannon and Lawrence Auskings of Nocogdoches,
Texas.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Lee Burnside and one brother,
Arthur Auskings.
She was a housewife and a Methodist by faith.

a long illness.
She was born April 9, 1933, in Hacker Valley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Collins; her father, Sherman F.
Cutlip; her mother, Bertha E. Hawkins; her stepmother, Zena Ware Cutlip; her
sisters, Mrs. Rex (Leola Cutlip) Gillespie and Mrs. Forest (Kathern Cutlip)
Pugh; Mrs. Oria (Grace Cutlip) Pudder; and Mrs. Paul (Martha Cutlip) Davidson.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gene (Karen) Collins Bradley of Spotsylvania,
Va., and Brenda K. Collins Gregory of Cowen; one sister, Mrs. Doug (Nancy Jean)
Bosley; four granddaughters, Marcel Southern, Sandy Orris, Carrie Woods
Herrington and Melody Woods; one grandson, Chad Woods; four great-grandsons,

She loved to fish and attended the Barton Baptist Church.

Reva Mae Robinson Beckner.
Surviving are one son, Richard Lynn Beckner Jr., Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters,

Frank K. Bell
Frank Kelly Bell, 85, of Roanoke, Va., passed away Sunday, March 30, 2003.
He was a member of the Masons Randolph Lodge 55 in Beverly for more than 60
years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason at the Roanoke Shrine Kazim Temple and
Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the American Chemical Society and the
American and Virginia Pharmaceutical Society. He was a graduate of Davis &
Elkins College and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.
Mr. Bell was the former owner and operator of the Daleville Pharmacy and former
employee of Peoples Drug Store. He was the poster child for the Shriner’s
Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1930.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron S. Bell and Ida M. Bell; and
brothers, Forrest J. Bell and Ned J. Bell.
He is survived by his wife, Lucile Powers Bell; son and daughter-in-law, Gary K.
Bell and Connie M. Bell; daughter, Jeanne Bell Murphy; grandson, Paul Murphy;
granddaughter, Leslie Murphy; brother, James W. Bell, Reisterstown, Md; and
sister, Nellie Bell Liggett, Huttonsville.
A graveside service was held April 2 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with the
Rev. Pattie Sewell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the

Ethel Radcliff Bennett.
On July 24, 1964, he was married to Wilma Jean Perry Bennett, who survives.

Carroll L. “Bill” Bennett, 68, a resident of the Highland Park

Everett “Joe” Bennett, 43, of Biloxi, Miss., died Thursday, April 17,
2003, in Biloxi, Miss.
He was born in Baltimore, Md., a son of Joan Bennett of St. Martin Community and

Also surviving are two sisters, Elizabeth Tarpein of Palm Bay, Fla., and Susan
Bennett of Waukegan, Ill.
He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Sherman and Ruth Bennett.
He had been a resident of the coast since 1973. He was a 1977 graduate of St.
Martin High School. He was a member and deacon of Lemoyne Boulevard Baptist
Church.

Fred Bennett, 87, of Onego, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Grant Memorial
Hospital in Petersburg.
Born June 5, 1916, in Onego, he was the son of the late John W. Bennett and
Effie Alice Davis Bennett.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Burrel Bennett, Harley Bennett and
Estel Bennett; and six sisters, Lena Mallow, Alta Harper, Flossie Raines, Lona
White, Nida Ketterman and Kate Davis.
Mr. Bennett was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was custodian for McCall’s Printing Co. in Bowie, Md., and was a farmer.
He was a lifelong member of the Seneca United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Mildred Bennett Bennett; three sons, John H.
Bennett of White Marsh, Md., Larry R. “Rick” Bennett of Bear, Del., George
Wayne Bennett of Seneca Rocks; one daughter, Loretha K. Humphrey of Daytona
Beach, Fla., 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Schaeffer Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Seneca United Methodist Church.

Gay Bennett
Gay Bennett, 78, a resident of East Main Street, Buckhannon, died Saturday,
Feb. 8, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital under the care of St. Joseph’s
Hospice.
He was born June 3, 1924, at Alexander, the youngest child of the late Esley H.
and Burla Simons Bennett.
He was united in marriage on June 26, 1944, to Marie Crawford Bennett, formerly
of Selbyville.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by two daughters, Marilyn Sue
Markley of Grafton and Shirley Jean Queen of French Creek; three grandchildren,
Melissa Stemple, Glenville, Pa., Scott Crites of Buckhannon and Shawna Crites of
Charlotte, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Stemple and Bret Stemple of
Glenville, Pa., and Allison Nicole Crites of Buckhannon; and two sisters,
Mavedelle Reger of Buckhannon and Lourene Woody of Rock Cave.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Kelsel, Keith, Forest, Clyde and
James Bennett; and four sisters, Violet McClain, Pauline Woody, Nellie Woody and
an infant sister, Hazel.
Mr. Bennett enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 19 and served three years in
the South Pacific aboard the cargo ship Boulder Victory during World War II. He
was honorably discharged on Jan. 9, 1946.
He was employed in the garment industry as a sewing machine mechanic for 38
years in Elkins, Grafton and Buckhannon. He retired in 1984 due to disability.
He was a charter member of the Good Hope Tabernacle and a former trustee of the
church. He was the bass singer in the gospel group, the Upshur Christian Heirs,
which he formed, and sang in many surrounding counties.
He was a member of the Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663.
Friends will be received at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel today from
2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2

Posey, both of Buckhannon; six sisters, Anna Jean Kelly, Buckhannon, Geneva Brady, Logan, Ohio, Tina Browning, Sewickley, Pa., Roberta Fulton, Baden, Pa., Clara Anderson, Aliquippa, Pa., and Lee Ellen Carpenter, Warren, Ohio; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Bennett of Buckhannon; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, David R. "Bud" Bennett; one brother, Oran
Hinzman; one sister, Melva Goad; and one grandson, Danny Posey.
She was a homemaker and attended Sand Run Baptist Church.

Hazel Hull Bennett, 92, a well-known educator of Tucker County and a resident of
Parsons, departed this life late Monday evening, May 12, 2003, in Davis Memorial
Hospital in Elkins. She had been in declining health for the past week.
She was born Feb. 15, 1911, in Huntington, the daughter of the late C. Forrest
Hull and Laura Hull.
Also surviving are two sons, Brian Lee Bennett and wife, Belinda, of Washington,
and Herbert Brent “Squeek” Bennett and wife, Sharon, Parsons; four
grandchildren, Brooke Cress, Leesburg, Va., Tamara Bennett, Midway, Ga., Becky
Bennett, Morgantown, and Brianna Bennett, Washington; and one sister-in-law,
Edna Hull, Harrisville.
Mrs. Bennett was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was
preceded in death by two brothers, Hudson Hull and Luther Whitman Hull; and two
sisters, Hope Mallow and Louise Gochenour.
Mrs. Bennett was a graduate of Durbin High School with the class of 1928. She
was a graduate of Shepherd State Teachers College in May 1943. She attended West
Virginia Wesleyan College and West Virginia University. Having earned a degree
in home economics and social studies, she was a former home management
supervisor for the Farm Security Administration for Tucker County. She was an
educator for 35 years, having taught at Durbin, Circleville and Parsons High
School and retired in 1973. Mrs. Bennett continued to substitute teach for many
years in Tucker County.
The family will receive friends at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home today from
6 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Thursday morning, Mrs. Bennett will be moved to the First
United Methodist Church, where final rites will be conducted at 10 a.m. The Rev.
David Fuller will officiate and interment will follow at Parsons City Cemetery

Jackie D. Bennett
Jackie David Bennett, 64, a resident of Port Deposit, Md., passed away
Friday, May 16, 2003, in the Havre de Grace Hospital in Maryland.
Born March 16, 1939, in Beverly, he was the son of the late Alfred
"Pete" and Geneva Arbogast Bennett.
He was united in marriage to the former Janet Potter, who survives in Maryland.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Patricia Charsha; a
brother, Fred T. Bennett; a granddaughter, Stephanie Renee Charsha; and a
grandson, Justin David Charsha.
Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Lorena Bennett of Beverly; and several nieces
and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were two brothers, Virgil and Delbert
Bennett.
Jackie attended the schools of Randolph County and had formerly been employed by
Labcraft until moving to Maryland. In Maryland, he went to work for the Wiley
shipyard and retired in 1991 from Local No. 820 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters.
He was an active member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.

Mary B. Bennett, 60, a resident of Massillon, Ohio, passed away Thursday,
April 10, 2003, in the Massillon Community Hospital.
Born Feb. 11, 1943, in Mill Creek, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and
Blanche Smith Wratchford.
She had been formerly married to Fred Bennett Sr., who survives in Canton, Ohio.
Also surviving are one daughter, Jennifer Bennett of Massillon, Ohio; one son,
Fred Bennett Jr. of Massillon, Ohio; four sisters, Lorena Bennett of Elkins,
Sally Fisher of Fredericksburg, Va., Clara Riffle of Mill Creek, and Anita
Arbogast of Elkins; one brother, Orvid “Bub” Wratchford of Shavers Run; and
five grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her parents were two sisters, infant Wilda
Wratchford and Thora Pritt; and one brother, infant Johnny Wratchford.
Mary was a homemaker.

Woodrow Richard “Bunk” Bennett, 87, of River Avenue, Weston, formerly of
Cleveland Mountain, died at Stonewall Jackson Hospital at Weston, Tuesday, Feb.
25, 2003, at 11:55 p.m.
He was born Feb. 8, 1916, at Kanawha Head, a son of the late Tom and Ida Riffle
Bennett.
He is survived by his wife, Willie Hester Herndon Bennett, whom he married March
31, 1940.
Also surviving are 13 children, Grey Andrew of St. Marys, Mona Cook of Adrian,
Sue Gould of Buckhannon, Arnett Bennett of Maryland, Bruce Bennett of
Buckhannon, Ben Bennett of Ohio, Sandy Wilfong of Smithfield, Priscilla Halbert
of Louisiana, Grace Riffle of Buckhannon, Vicky Miller of Buckhannon, Wease
Bennett of Philippi, and Candy Wamsley of Ohio.
Mr. Bennett has 49 grandchildren and several great-grandchild and several nieces
and nephews.
He is survived by one brother, Stanley Wilt of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by seven sisters, Bell, Garnet, Liz, Frankie, Mamie,
Malbe and Tina; and two brothers, Dana and Orlando.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 3663 of Buckhannon. A special thanks to God for saving his soul, the
staff at Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Dr. Orvick, Pastor David Jessie, Pastor
David Phillips, Pastor Hank Sharrow, the Rock Cave Baptist Church, Robert
Vincent Funeral Home, and all those that sit with him and cared for his needs
while in the hospital.
Mr. Bennett loved his family and loved hunting.

Theodore Lee Berg, 72, a resident of Valley Bend, passed away at 4:45 a.m.

He was born March 28, 1931, at DeSmet, S.D., the son of the late Louis and Ida

On June 1, 1963, he was married to the former Geneva Hogan, who survives at
Valley Bend.
Also surviving are one son, Stephen Berg and wife, Linda, of Pliny. Three
grandchildren, Nicole, Tiffany and Adam, and several nieces and nephews also

Also preceding him in death was a brother, Louis Berg Jr.
Mr. Berg was a 1951 graduate of Rockford High School in Rockford, Ill. He was a
machinist for 40 years until his retirement in 2001, when he moved to Valley
Bend.

On May 31, 1923, at Harrisburg, Ill., she was married to William
C. Berkel, who preceded her ind eath on April 10, 2000.
She is survived by one daughter, Lucille Buchanan, Valley Bend;
one Son, Lawrence William Berkel and wife, Gatha, Beckley; five grandsons, David
Buchanan, Bremerton, Wash., Douglas Berkel, Pineville, Ronald Berkel, Fairdale,
Lawrence Berkel, Romney, and Kelly Berkel, Lewisburg; seven great grandchildren
Heather Cline and husband, Jamie, Bethany, Holly, Forest, Olivia, Travis and
Triftan Berkel. Two great-great-grandchildren, Hannah and Rachel Cline,

Leota R. Bertolini
Leota Ruth “Duddy” Flanagan Bertolini joined her heavenly father in the land
of comfort and peace on Saturday night, May 24, 2003, after a long illness.
She was born in Coalton on Oct. 16, 1922, the daughter of Ruth Ellen Gallaher
and William Robert Flanagan.
On June 7, 1946, she was married to Roger Bertolini, who survives in Elkins.
They would have soon celebrated 57 years of marriage.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and two
brothers, Freda Phillips, Orra Letha Rhuberry, Bessie Kelly, Geraldine Woods,
Snowden Flanagan and Frank Flanagan.
One sister, Grace Cook; a brother, Ralph Flanagan; and a brother-in-law, Leo
Bertolini and wife, Dorothy, survive.
Also surviving are nieces and nephews Donna Cook; Chris Woods; Richard
“Cappy” Kelly; Mike, Patsy and Jamie Flanagan; Thomas Flanagan; Barbara
Lawrence and husband, Clark; Corina Belan and husband, John; and Joann Yeager.
She also leaves behind several great-nieces and nephews.
She graduated from Coalton High School in 1940 and went to work in Baltimore,
Md., in the shopping department of Sears, Roebuck and Co. She returned to Elkins
in 1942 where she was employed by the A&P Tea Co. for 37 1/2 years. She
worked as bookkeeper, head cashier and assistant manager until her retirement in
1985.
She willingly gave herself to the community and was involved in Cancer Care
Corps, Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Davis & Elkins College Aid and
GFWC Woman’s Club of Elkins. A longstanding member of Davis Memorial
Presbyterian Church, she belonged to the Lacy Bible Class, Women of the Church
and Circle One, where she worked tirelessly, even when she was unable to attend
regularly.
She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. At her request, her
body has been donated to the West Virginia University Medical School Human Gift
Registry.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be

Agnes M. Beswarick, 85, of Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon, died

She was born May 23, 1917, in Allegany, Md., a daughter of the late Augustus and
Rose Burkey Logsdon.
She was thrice married. First, she married Jake Maxson; second, she married Ira
Jay Rhodes; and third she married John Beswarick, all of whom preceded her in
death.
Surviving are one brother, Raymond J. Logsdon, Tampa, Fla.; and two friends,
Lois Serrine and Gary Mallonee, both of Buckhannon.
She was a cook at the Upshur County Jail. She was a member of the Church of the
Nazarene.

Leah Belle Beverage, 78, of Buckhannon, died Friday, July 11, 2003, in Ruby
Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
She was born April 28, 1925, in Hemlock, a daughter of the late Ira and Rebecca
Leigh Light.
Surviving are her husband, Carl Beverage of Buckhannon; and three sisters,
Myrtle Cutright and Bernice Anderson, both of Buckhannon, and Frances Tomblyn of
Tallmansville Road, Buckhannon.
She was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Grace Baptist Temple in Jane Lew.
She enjoyed life and her friends here on earth and now resides in Heaven.

She was born Sept. 10, 1956, in Ohio, a daughter of Dwayne and Vivian (Biller) Everson of Belington.
She was reared by adoptive parents, the late Wilson and Lila Biller.

Waybright, Elkins; two sons, James Wilson and Chad Mills; one sister, Irene Hammer, Elkins; one half brother, Ronald Everson; five aunts, Katheryn Ross, Betty Westfall, Juanita
Weese, Martha Harris and Oletta England; two uncles, the Rev. Howard Biller and Robert
Biller; and two special nieces, Amber and Christin Ware.
She was a homemaker and attended the Church of Christ. She was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Minnie Bitonti
Minnie P. Colantino Bitonti, 87, of Fairmont, died Thursday evening, Dec.
18, 2003, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
She was born in Fairmont on May 7, 1916, the daughter of the late Dominick and
Clara Sante Fraternali Bitonti.
She retired from Fairmont State College where she was a buyer for the college
bookstore. She previously worked for the Marion County Civil Defense and was a
former secretary for Robert H. Mollohan. She had also worked for Hawkins
plumbing and Owens Illinois.
She was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she was a member of
the St. Lucy Guild and was a member of the St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic
Church.
She was also a member of the SMC club for more than 60 years, and was a member
of the Village Way Birthday Club and the Garden Village garden club.
After years of service at Fairmont State College, Minnie spent time enjoying

She is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Karol Enright of
Fairmont, Karen Larry and husband, Edward, of Philippi and Veronica
"Vicki" Shultz of Bunner Ridge.
She is also survived by four sisters, Kaye Baird of Cape Coral, Fla., Lenore
Pacifico of Fairmont, Violet Duke and husband, Rudy, of Barrackville and Mary
Lou Farrell of Ft. Myers, Fla; and one brother-in-law, Patsy Bitonti of
Fairmont.
She is also survived by five grandchildren, Adrian T. Larry, Aaron F. Larry and
wife, Lori Irwin-Larry, Kristine Enright Condie and husband, Joe, Michael
Shultz, currently deployed n Iraq, and Madelaine Shultz; two
great-grandchildren, Julia Renee Condie and Adrienne Danielle "Dani"
Pritt; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Frank
"Buckeye" Bitonti, in 1966; and brothers John Colantino and two infant
brothers.
Visitation was from noon to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Ross
Funeral Home in Fairmont where a vigil service was held at 7 p.m. Sunday. The
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. today at the St. Peter the
Fisherman Catholic Church with Fr. Leonard Smith as the celebrant. Interment

Betty June VanPelt Black, 69, a former resident of Kelly Mountain and 915 N.
Randolph Ave. and a patient in the Hopemont Hospital in Terra Alta, passed away
Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, in the hospital.
She was born May 20, 1934, in Huttonsville, the daughter of the late Della G.
VanPelt.
Surviving are two sons, Robert L. Black Jr. and wife, Cathy, of Mill Creek and
Scott E. Black of Elkins; two daughters, Rebecca L. Sampson of Elkins and Paula
Johnston and husband, Karl Michael Johnston, of Montrose; one brother, Ronald
VanPelt of Huttonsville; five grandchildren, Ronald Sampson and wife, Wendi,
Bryan Black and wife, Jessica, Jeb S. Black, and Lauren and Jacob Johnston; four
great-grandchildren, Jesse, Damian and Bradley Sampson and Makayla Black; and
several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were one son-in-law, Ronald “Pete” Sampson; and
one sister-in-law, Joanne VanPelt.
Betty attended the schools of Randolph County and attended West Virginia
Technical College at Institute. She was employed as a switchboard operator for
the Department of Natural Resources prior to becoming disabled.
She enjoyed arts and crafts, the Elkins Flea Market and was a member of the
Redman’s Club.

Roger N. Black, 55, a resident of Duboise, Pa., died Friday, March 14, 2003,
at Duboise.
He was born Aug. 4, 1947, in Buckhannon, the son of Leo Black of Clarksburg and
the late Ethlen Casto Black.
Surviving are two sisters, Sylvia Snyder and husband, James, of Stonewood, and
Vivian Charlene Read and husband, Charles, of Woodland, Pa.; one brother, Gary
A. Black and wife, Adrianna, West Des Moines, Iowa; and two aunts, Kathleen Reed
and Armillis Reese, both of Buckhannon; seven nieces and nephews and five
great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mr. Black was a Methodist by faith and had worked at the Harrison County
Sheltered Workshop.

Elizabeth Anne Bland, 79, a resident of 20 Circle Drive, Buckhannon, died
Monday, June 16, 2003, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Weston.
She was born Feb. 11, 1924, in Buckhannon, the daughter of the late Matthew
Edmiston and Nellie McWhorter Edmiston.
On Nov. 25, 1957, she was married to Joseph H. Bland, who preceded her in death
on March 21, 1989.
Surviving are one stepdaughter, Martha Jo Keller, Middlebourne; one brother, Dr.
John M. Edmiston, Plant City, Fla.; seven nephews, Dr. John E. Edmiston, Plant
City, Fla., Dr. Mark Edmiston, Colorado, Andrew Edmiston, Florida, George M.
Edmiston, Ohio, David B. Edmiston, New Jersey, James T. Edmiston, Pennsylvania,
and Matthew J. Edmiston, Pennsylvania; and seven nieces, Pamela Allman,
Buckhannon, Linda Tenney, Virginia, Sandra McSeveney, London, Ohio, Cynthia
Lane, South Carolina, Beth Mansfield, New Jersey, Carol Ann Edmiston, Ohio and
Jane Lea Pfautch, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by one stepson, William “Doug” Bland; three
brothers, George Edmiston, Matthew Edmiston Jr. and Dr. Andrew Edmiston; one
stepgrandson, Bradley Bland; and one stepgranddaughter, Michelle Lynn Keller.
Mrs. Bland graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1945. After
graduation she went to Pearl River, N.Y., to work as a research assistant for
American Cyamide.
She was a member of the Buckhannon Woman’s Club and the Upshur County
Historical Society.
She was a volunteer in the recovery room at St. Joseph’s Hospital in
Parkersburg from 1980 to 1997, accumulating more than 7,980 hours. She returned
to Buckhannon in 1997.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Heavner Cemetery in
Buckhannon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the West Virginia
Wesleyan College Library or the American Cancer Society. The Poling-St. Clair

Edwin F. Bodkin
Edwin F. Bodkin, 77, of Cabot, Pa., died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at the
Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 22, 1926, in Davis, he was a son of the late Aud G. and Flora Collins
Bodkin.
He was a retired coal miner. He worked for the Duquesne Light Company Mines in
Greene County, Pa. He retired in 1970.
He was a World War II. veteran of the United States Army, and had served in the
occupation forces in Japan.
He was Baptist in faith.
His wife, Alberta Lee Shipp Bodkin, survives him. They were married Feb. 28,
1949.
Also surviving are three sons, David P. Bodkin of Cabot, Pa., Edwin F. Bodkin
Jr. of Morgantown, and Mark A. Bodkin of Butler; one daughter, Mrs. Richard
(Naomi) Esau of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Loretta J. Hedrick Boggs, 66, a resident of 805 Poe Run Road, Elkins, departed
this life late Friday evening, Nov. 21, 2003, at the Davis Memorial Hospital.
She had been in declining health for the past five years and death was
attributed to cancer.
She was born Friday, Oct. 1, 1937, at Pocahontas County, the daughter of the
late Walter L. Hedrick and Kathryn L. Lester Hedrick.
On Oct. 13, 1956, at Elkins, she was married to Roscoe Harold Boggs, who
preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1994.
Surviving are four brothers, Eddie Hedrick of Elkins, Homer Hedrick of Elkins,
Roger Hedrick and wife, Linda, of Elkins, and Johnny Hedrick and wife, Pat, of
Detroit, Mich.; three sisters, Carolyn Shaffer and husband, Charles, of Elkins,
Patsy Smith and husband, Floyd, of Montrose, and Peggy Thrift and husband,
Ronnie, of Long Creek, S.C.; five half brothers, Donnie Hedrick and wife, Joyce,
of Montrose, Billy Hedrick and wife, Tammy, of Montrose, Tommy Hedrick of
Elkins, Junior Hedrick and wife, Nancy, of Belington, and Patrick Hedrick of
Huttonsville; three half sisters, Rose Mary Pritt, and husband, Dick, of Knox,

Cressie Morlene White Bohon, 94, a resident of the Seneca Road, Elkins,
departed this life late Saturday evening, March 8, 2003, at her home. She had
been in declining health.
She was born Monday, June 1, 1908, at Job, the daughter of the late Lonzo W.
White and Martha Alice White.
On April 26, 1929, at Parsons, she was married to Lyda Offutt Bohon, who
preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1991.
Cressie raised three girls, Mrs. Max (Martha Dean) Arbogast, now deceased, Mrs.
Donald (Helen) Coberly, Seneca Road, and Mrs. A. Wayne (Regina “Jeannie”)
Mouse, Beverly; two sisters, Beatrice Barrickman, Dailey, and Pearl Lipscomb,
Belington; several grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and many
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Fansler and Madeline Fluharty;
and three brothers, Bruce, Woodrow and Foster White.
Cressie attended the schools of Whitmer, was a homemaker and was known for her
baking, especially her famous molasses cookies that she baked in the shape of
gingerbread men, decorated and gave to family and neighbors.
She enjoyed raising plants and flowers and was a member of the Wayside United
Methodist Church, where she had formerly served as a Sunday School and Bible
School teacher.

Her family was her greatest joy. She was a loving mother to her children and
grandchildren. She was a loving person to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harvey W. White.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Gilbert Bohon; a daughter, Peggy,
and husband, Mark Blowers of Canal Fulton; three sons, Craig, and wife, Vicki
Bohon of Tennessee, Chuck Bohon of Cleveland and Brian Bohon of Ravenna; and
three grandchildren, Jessie and Stephen Bohon and Drew Blowers.
Also surviving are her mother and stepfather, Savannah and Charles Rhodes; two
sisters, Shirley Jean Shreve of Elkins and Judy, and husband, Robert Arbogast of

Maude Bolton, 90, passed away at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, in Lynchburg
Health and Rehab Center. Mrs. Bolton was a resident of Lynchburg for the past 10
years and was a former resident of Route 2, Belington.
Mrs. Bolton was born Sept. 29, 1912, a daughter of the late Hiram and Eva
(Harvey) Crites.
Her husband, Hartsel Bolton, preceded her in death in 1994.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Margaret Bolton of
Altavista, Va.; one granddaughter, Janet Kearns of Baltimore, Md.; and one
grandson, Dr. Kenneth Hugh Bolton Jr., Baton Rouge, La.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Mrs. Bolton was a homemaker and attended the Little Bethel Baptist Church.

He was born March 7, 1943, at Tunnelton in Preston County, the son of the late
Josiah B. and Nora Elizabeth Nice Bolyard.

Stella G. Bomia, 76, of Monroe, Mich., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at 5:05
a.m. at her residence. She had been in poor health since October 2002.
She was born Oct. 30, 1926, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Cecil and Odest
Wamsley Moore.
She was married to Norman J. Bomia.
Surviving are three sons, Ferl D. Bomia and wife, Denice, LaSalle, Mich., Duane
N. Bomia, Monroe, Mich., and Christopher M. Bomia and wife, Jeri, Monroe, Mich.;
two daughters, Yvonne G. Moore, Romulus, Mich., and Donna M. Bomia, Monroe,
Mich.; one brother, John Moore and wife, Thelma, Kingman, Ariz.; two sisters,
Nancy Pete, Luna Pier, Mich., and Joan Hannibal, Hualapi, Ariz.; 12
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Grace T. Bomia; and one brother,
Charles.
She was a homemaker. She worked as a union steward at Walt Disney World in
Orlando, Fla., from 1972 and retired in 1976. During World War II, she worked as
a riveter manufacturing military airplanes. She was a member of the St. John’s
Catholic Church, where she volunteered as a lunch mother when her children were
in school. She was very active at the church and school. She was active in fund
raising for the Archdiocese of Detroit. She was a founder, coordinator and a
volunteer for the LaSalle Volunteer Fire Departments. She enjoyed computers,
working with 4-H, sewing, baking and spending time with her grandchildren.
She moved to Monroe, Mich. in 1947.

Vallie Marie Bonner, 71, of Munson Twp., Ohio, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2003,
at her home.
She was born April 22, 1932, in Dry Fork, the daughter of the late Wilbert and
Pearlie Varner White.
On Sept. 18, 1954, she married Dwight Bonner, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Christine Moffett of Warren, Ohio, and Sherry
Bonner of Chardon, Ohio; two sons, Gary Bonner of Chardon, Ohio, and Gregory
(Gayle) Bonner of South Riding, Va.; six grandchildren, Jacob Bonner, Keith and
Kyle Hershberger, John Bergenstein, Elyssa and Ryan Bonner; and one sister, Mary
Lea Yokum of Claridon Twp., Ohio.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Savannah Waybright and Naomi White;
and three brothers, Oliver, Willis and Nolan White.
Mrs. Bonner served as a quality control inspector for LFE Corp. for 19 years,
retiring in 1994. She then worked part time eight years as a home health aide
until her illness no longer permitted it. She was a member of the Concord
Alliance Church.
She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, flower and vegetable gardening,
reading and crafts. She also loved attending bluegrass music festivals. She and
her husband enjoyed camping throughout the United States.

Anna L. Golden Booth, 71, a resident of 808 Johnson Ave. in Belington,
departed this life at 1 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at her home. She had been in
declining health for quite sometime.
She was born Sept. 26, 1931, at Belington, the daughter of the late John H. and
Flora Gibson Golden.
She was three times married, first to Bradford C. Moore, second to Denzil
Terrance Sturm, and thirdly, on Sept. 1, 1973, to Gale Booth, who survives at
their home in Belington.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Wanda Owens,
Belington, Kathy Hymes Long, the Teter Creek community, and Marsha Epler,
Buckhannon; two sons, John L. Sturm, Mabie, and Terry Moore, Clarksburg; and two
stepchildren, Paul White, Elkins, and Angie Booth, Belington.

9 p.m. today. At 7 p.m., the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW will conduct a memorial

Rheta K. Booth
Rheta Keenan Booth, 99, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the Elkins Regional
Convalescent Center. During the last four years, she made her home with Camilla
and Will Hertig at Alpena and with Rheta and Gary Ransbottom at Glady.
Mrs. Booth was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 8, 1904, to Laura Deppe and
Felix Patrick Keenan.
On July 18, 1926, she married Elza Fountain Booth.
They had three daughters, Patricia Ann, Camilla Fontaine and Rheta Florence. She
leaves nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elza; her daughter, Patricia; her
brother, Patrick Keenan; and her sister, Florence Wright; and by her special
mother, Mary Elizabeth O’Donnell.
Mrs. Booth graduated from Marshall (College) University where she played on the
first women’s basketball team at that school. After graduation, she began a
teaching career in Charleston.
During her teaching career she continued her education, leading to a master’s
degree from Marshall. She also taught in Guyandotte and Barboursville, in
Cincinnati, Ohio, and Bremerhaven, Germany.
In her lifetime, she was active in the Eastern Star, Guyandotte Garden Club and
Barboursville Woman’s Club, and served as docent at the Huntington Museum of
Art, and served on the board of directors of the Huntington State Hospital. She
also was a lover of flowers and children.
She was a member of Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church in Barboursville and
attended Scott Memorial Presbyterian Church in Alpena.
Cremation services were provided by Lohr & Barb Funeral Home. The family

Robert W. Booth
Robert W. Booth, 72, a former resident of Barbour County, Portage, Ohio, and a
resident of Jane Lew for the past two years, departed this life Sunday, July 27,
2003, at his Lewis County home. He had been in his usual health and death was
unexpected.
He was born Jan. 21, 1931, at Barbour County, a son of the late Hayward and
Alice Moore Booth.
He is survived by one son, Robert L. Booth, Akron, Ohio; one sister, Audra
Lambert, Jane Lew; two brothers, Herbert Booth, Medina, Ohio, and John Booth,
Philippi; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one sister, Elwanda
Copenhaver.
Mr. Booth attended the Belington High School, graduating during his military
service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict
and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veteran Association. He was
retired from the U.S. Steel Co. He was a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 9 a.m. to 11
a.m. Wednesday. The casket will remain closed. Funeral services will be
conducted from the funeral home parlor at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Downing Gregory
officiating. Interment will follow in the Barbour Memorial Cemetery near
Belington, where the presentation of the American flag will be accorded by the

Virginia Rose Booth, 65, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at the home of her friends, Geraldine and Wayne Hamrick of the Hampton Road.
She was born June 23, 1937, at Alexander, a daughter of Harold and Nettie Johnson Golden, who both survive in Buckhannon.
She was united in marriage on April 11, 1964, to Lawrence H. Booth, who survives.
She is also survived by two sons, Stanley Booth of Beverly, and Randal Booth of Pickens; one daughter, Stella Rose Casto of Buckhannon; seven grandchildren; six sisters, Rachel Smith and Ellen Shingleton, both of Buckhannon, Opal Corbitt of Cleveland, Ohio, Twila Morris of Buckhannon, Joanne Audia of Morgantown, and Rhonda Hinkle of French Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Mrs. Booth was a long-time member of the Pickens Baptist Church.

Anna Mae Boothe, 82, of Durbin, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Davis
Memorial Hospital in Elkins following an extended illness.
Mrs. Boothe was born Nov. 10, 1921, at Durbin, the daughter of the late Branson
and Tressie Lambert Thompson.
She is survived by three daughters, Jean Halfhill of Bowling Green, Ky., Carole
Casey of Johnsburg, Ill., and Linda Dietrick of Thornton, Colo.; two sons, Lary
Elza and Tom Boothe, both of Durbin; three sisters, Zona Hoover of Marlinton,
Edith Gillenwater of Leet and Eva Riley of San Ramon, Calif.; 12 grandchildren,
four great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Booth; two brothers, Marvin
Halterman of Hopkinsville, Ky.; and William “Bud” Halter of Ironton, Ohio.
She was a homemaker and attended the Durbin United Methodist Church. A member of
the Rebekah Lodge, she also in previous years was active in the American Legion
Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a participant in the activities of the Durbin
Senior Center.

Emmanuel Raymond Borror, 59, of Elkins and formerly of Landes, died Friday,
April 11, 2003, at his residence where he had been under the care of Mountain
Hospice in Elkins.
He was born April 6, 1944, in Landes. He was the son of the late Cora Ethel (Borror)
Davis and Dorsey Davis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Leroy
Jimmie Taylor III on April 3, 2003; and two sisters, Mabel Borror and Iva
Keplinger.
Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Hilda Marie (Taylor) Borror, whom he married
on May 26, 1986, in Garrett County, Md.; mother-in-law, Evelyn Taylor of Elkins;
one daughter, Crystal Thorne and husband, Paul, of Middletown, Va.; two sons,
Michael Borror of Broadway, Va., and Donald Taylor and fiance, Kerrie, of
Elkins; one foster son, Shawn Pennington and wife, Allison, of Elkins; one
grandchild due in November 2003; two foster grandchildren, Benjamin Byrum and
Brandy Byrum; one brother, Baxter Borror and wife, Sandy, Upper Tract; three
sisters, Nida Irving of Petersburg, Vada Davis of Mathias, and Carol Runions of

He was a saw mill operator for Ed Arey Split Rails. He served in the Army during
World War II in Korea and Okinawa. He was a member of French Creek Chapter 36
DAV and a member of Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663. He attended
Alton United Methodist Church.

Margaret Bosworth
Margaret Wamsley Bosworth, 84, a resident of Pasadena, Md., departed this
life on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at University Hospital in Baltimore, Md. She had
been in declining health for the past several years.
She was born July 12, 1918, at Elkins, a daughter of the late David Wamsley and
Mary Harris Wamsley.
On Nov. 21, 1940, at Elkton, Md., she married Charles Ebbert Bosworth, who
survives at Pasadena, Md.
Also surviving are one son, David "Ebbie" Bosworth of Pasadena, Md.;
and one daughter, Deborah J. Bosworth of Centerbrook, Conn. Also surviving are
four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, one sister, Elizabeth Wamsley Wilson, preceded her
in death.
Mrs. Bosworth graduated from Davis & Elkins College with a bachelor’s
degree in 1940. She did postgraduate work at the University of Maryland, and
earned her master’s degree from Gallaudet University in 1963.
Most of her career was spent teaching the handicapped and children with special
needs. She taught at Oakwood Elementary School in Glen Burnie, Md., from 1961 to
1969. She taught at Carver School for the Deaf in Gambrills, Md., and served as
principal from 1969 to 1978.
Mrs. Bosworth was a member of the Anne Arundel County Teachers Association, the
Maryland State Teachers Association, National Education Association, Association
Convocation America Instructor for the Deaf, and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was also author of a curriculum guide for children and youth with special
needs and the special education curriculum development.
A memorial service was held April 11 at Harundale Presbyterian Church in Glen
Burnie, Md. The McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home was in charge of the

Richard Dale Bosworth, age 81, a resident of the 55 Duncan Lane, Springfield,
Pa., departed this life Thursday morning, Sept. 25, 2003, at his residence. He
had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
He was born Tuesday, May 9, 1922, at Elkins, the son of the late Carol Bosworth
and Mary Marks Bosworth.
On Sept. 5, 1942, he was married to the former Lora Leonard, who survives.
Also surviving are one brother, Charles Ebb Bosworth, Baltimore, Md.; and two
sisters, Dot Sloan, Crystal Springs, and Nina Thompson, Panama City, Fla.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Newt, Bud, Owen and Brownie Bosworth;
and one sister, Pauline Pritt.
He attended the schools of Randolph County, graduated from the Detroit Institute
of Technology with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering, and
served with the Merchant Marines during World War II.
He worked for the Sun Oil Company in Baltimore, Md., as a mechanical engineer.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, AF&AM of Baltimore, Md., the Edgemont
Golf Club, where he was an avid golfer, the Kirkwood Health Spa, and was an
active member of the Springfield Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home on Sunday
from noon to 1 p.m., at which time Mr. Bosworth will be moved to the Beverly
Cemetery for graveside services. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate.

Robert Bourgeois Sr.
Lt. Commander Robert Augustin Bourgeois Sr., USN retired, 74, died Monday,
March 3, 2003.
He was born Feb. 7, 1929, in Baton Rouge, La., and a resident of French Creek,
since 1976. He was a 30 year naval officer and a veteran of World War II. He
served three tours of duty in Korea, three tours of duty in Vietnam and numerous
other campaigns. He was a navigator and tactical coordinator flying in the Navy
P-3. He was both a mechanical and electrical engineer.
He was preceded in death in 1977, by his wife of 38 years, Patricia Diane
Fleming Bourgeois, and his parents, Eugene Bourgeois and Una Claire Chauvin
Bourgeois, of New Orleans, La.
Surviving are his five sons, Robert Jr., Mark, twins, Kenneth and Kevin, and his
youngest son, Alex; grandchildren are Christie Lynn, Mark Jr., Ian, Tess,
Hunter, Rosalynn, Christin and Corrine.
Mr. Bourgeois’ surviving siblings are Alvin, Pat, Paul, David, Denise, Sylvia
and Virginia as well as his life-long childhood friend, Lynn Roberts of Baton
Rouge.

Virginia Tobitha Powers Bowers, 83, a resident of the Norton community, passed
away Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, in the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at
Belington. She had been in failing health for the past year.
She was born Sept. 18, 1920, at Huttonsville, the daughter of the late Charles
W. and Alma Kimbrew Powers.
On Nov. 18, 1939, she was united in marriage to Forest H. Bowers, who preceded
her in death on Jan. 28, 2002 in Fort Meade, Fla. They were married for 62
years.
Surviving are two sons, Forest David Bowers and wife, Jane, of Norton and Philip
Bowers and wife, Arlene, of Tampa, Fla.; two daughters, Joy Rossi and husband,
Jack, of Charleston and Jane Pingley and husband, Ken, of Norton; one brother,
Clair Eldon Powers and wife, Virginia, of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister-in-law,
Ruth Bowers O’Fallon of Missouri; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents were two brothers, Warren E. Powers
and Edgar Powers; and one sister, Willa Powers Rowan Lindsey.
Mrs. Bowers attended the schools of Randolph County and graduated from Coalton
High School with the class of 1939.
She was a homemaker who loved to sew and quilt. She and her husband, Forest,
spent many years in Fort Meade, Fla., where she was a member of the Lake Buffin
Baptist Church.
She was a charter member of the First Christian Church in Elkins.
She will be sadly missed by her family, friends and those whose lives she
touched.

Frank Blair Boyles, 90, a resident of 3859 Dawsonia St. Bonita, Calif., and

Helen M. Bradberry, 56, a resident of Norton, passed away Friday evening,
Feb. 28, 2003, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a brief
illness.
She was born Jan. 13, 1947, at East Lynn, Wayne County, the daughter of Louise
Jackson Wilmoth, who survives at Norton, and the late Bryan Wilmoth Jr.
On Jan. 23, 1969, she was married to Larry R. Bradberry, who survives at Norton.
Also surviving are two sons, Rodney Bradberry of Mabie and Christopher Bradberry
of Norton; and one daughter, Angela Hinchman of Norton. Two sisters, Janice
Bennett and Letha Wilmoth, both of Norton, and five grandchildren also survive.
Helen was a graduate of Elkins High School and was employed as a billing clerk
at Davis Memorial Hospital for the past 33 years.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ of Elkins.

On June 3, 1937, she was married to Odgar Ernest Bradley, who preceded her in
death on Nov. 10, 1982.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Barnes and husband, Sonny, Niles, Ohio, and
Dianna Reed and husband, Marshall, Belington; four sons, David Bradley and wife,
Susie, Belington, Robert Bradley and wife, Carol, Hanover, Pa., Ernest Bradley
and wife, Carol, Windham, Ohio, and Ralford Bradley and wife, Sharon, Ravenna,
Ohio; two brothers, Howard Louk and wife, Creta, Belington, and Dale Louk,
Ridgeley; 24 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, three
great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Leah Hamilton and Dora
Schoonover; six brothers, Arden Louk, Carl Louk, Burl Louk, Don Louk, Ralph Louk
and Samuel Louk; and two grandchildren, Timothy Barnes and Timperance Alth.
Mrs. Bradley was a homemaker. She enjoyed traveling, fishing and being with her
family.

Donald N. “Chub” Brake, 74, a former resident of Elkins and more recently a
resident of SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation at Hurricane, passed away Sunday,
Aug. 10, 2003, at the center.
He was born Sept. 22, 1928, at Harrisville, the son of the late Hugh and Ada
Douglass Brake.
On Dec. 30, 1956, he was married to the former Virginia D. Ward, who preceded
him in death.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Paula) Conover, Hurricane; and two
brothers, Neil Brake, Buckhannon, and John Brake, Punta Gorda, Fla.
Two sisters, Lois Wright, Fairlawn, Ohio, and Jean Sedanko, Dublin, Ohio; and
one grandson, Kevin Conover, also survive.
Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Wendell and H. Linn Brake, and
one sister, Virginia Ihle.
Mr. Brake was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School and served in the U.S.
Navy.
He was employed as a sales representative with Nabisco for over 25 years prior
to his retirement.
He was a Methodist by faith and a member of the Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF&AM.

Ethel F. Brake, 90, of Route 6, Box 308, Buckhannon, died Thursday, May 1,
2003, at 3:10 p.m. in Valley Care Personal Care Home in Buckhannon.
She was born June 22, 1912, in Upshur County, the daughter of the late Charles
Lemuel and Georgia Orma Brake.
Surviving is a nephew, Loran D. Brake, Wilmington, Del.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford O. Brake and Carl Brake; and
a sister, Beulah Koon.
She was a seamstress for Reidbord Brothers and a member of the AARP. She
attended Hampton United Methodist Church.

Oral A. Brake, 84, of Nella’s Nursing Home in Elkins and formerly of Cox’s
Mills, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at the nursing home.
He was born June 12, 1919, in Duffy, the son of the late Ora Brake and Frona
Woods Smith Brake.
He was preceded in death by two wives, Elsie Brake and Virginia Palmer Brake.
Surviving are one sister, Juanita Garrett Murphy of Salem; and 18 nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Smith; and one sister, Stella
Smith Ware.
He was a lumberman and a Protestant by faith.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Kincaid Cemetery near

Russie V. Brake, 91, of Dalton, Ohio, passed away at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct.
25, 2003, at the Shady Lawn Nursing Home where she had been a resident.
Born May 13, 1912, in Webster County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and
Samantha Green VanPelt.
She was united in marriage to Darrell Woods, who preceded her in death. She then
was united in marriage to John Brake, who also preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Eloise Robinson of Massillon, Ohio; two sons, Jim
Woods and J.R. Woods, both of Massillon, Ohio; two sisters, Pauline Hamrick of
Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Lela Dillon of Cowen; one brother, Acil Shaver of
Webster Springs; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and seven
great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were two sisters, Ellen Hamrick and Goldie Knight.
Russie was formerly employed as a cook for Webster County Schools. She was a
homemaker.
Mrs. Brake was a member of Valley Head Baptist Church.

Harold B. Brannon, 77, of Route 4, Buckhannon, died Monday, March 17, 2003,
in Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston.
He was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Enoch, a son of the late Greeley Brannon and Ava
White Brannon Wilson.
She married Mildred V. Nicholas Brannon, who preceded her in death on Dec. 30,
1998.
Surviving are five daughters, Sharon Sue Short of Ohio, Elfreda "Ally"
Coen of Buckhannon, Diana Mae Crites of French Creek, Shelia Moses of Ohio, and
Charlotte Ann Wamsley of Hodgesville; two sons, Harold Wayne Brannon of
Buckhannon, and Joseph Randal Brannon of Clarksburg; 18 grandchildren, 18
great-grandchildren and two brothers, Samuel Wilson of Ohio, and Kent Wilson of
Clay.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Tracey.
He was a retired coal miner and retired farmer. He served in the U.S. Army
during World War II and was a member of the UMW. He was a Protestant by faith.

Dorothy “Granny” Bright, 86, of 168 S. Kanawha St., Buckhannon, died
Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
She was born Sept. 4, 1916, at Weston, a daughter of the late Eli Monroe and
Lucy Bird Ratliff Marsh.
She was married to Homer Lee Bright, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one sister, Pearl Clifton, Weston; two grandsons, Mark Riggs and
wife, Margaret, French Creek, and Gregory Riggs and wife, Cheryl, Buckhannon;
three granddaughters, Susan Arey and Robyn Simons and husband, John, all of
Buckhannon, and Jane Riggs Younkman and husband, Derek, Bellefountain, Ohio; two
special nieces, Juanita Rossey, Jane Lew, and Jo Edwards, Weston; one
son-in-law, Dale F. Riggs, Buckhannon; 16 great-grandchildren and eight
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and seven brothers; her first husband,
Russell Lantz and second husband, Charles Presley Gay.
She worked for C&P Telephone Co. She was a member of the Order of Eastern
Star 86, Buckhannon Elks Club No. 1736, Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598, VFW Post
3663 and Upshur County Republican Women. She was the former owner of “Maggies
Restaurant” in Buckhannon for 20 years. She was famous for her homemade pies
in the 1970s and 80s. Maggie’s was the favorite hangout for West Virginia
Wesleyan College Students and local residents. Upshur County Law Enforcement
Officers knew that she always had a hot cup of coffee when they needed a break.
She loved her family, friends, and will be missed by all. She was a born again
Christian.
At the request of the deceased the body will be cremated and there will be no
public visitation or funeral. A private family memorial service will be held
with the traditional scattering of the ashes at a later date. The Poling-St.

Harvey Lewis Bright, 81, of the Highland Park community in Elkins, passed away
Tuesday, May 21, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital.
Born May 2, 1922, in Dryfork, he was the son of the late Kenneth G. and Annie
Bonner Bright.
He was united in marriage to the former Myrtle Louise Gibson, who preceded him
in death on Feb. 22, 2002.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas Lewis Bright and wife, Johann, of Elkins, and
Richard Lee Bright and wife, Gail, of Belington; and several grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were two sisters, Pearl Roy and Bess Harper; and four
brothers, Clarence Bright, Carl Bright, Lenzy Bright and Emmit Bright.
Mr. Bright was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during World War I and
World War II.
Mr. Bright was formerly employed by Allegheny Lumber Co. as a foreman until
retiring. He was Pentecostal by faith.

She was born in Samp, and attended one-room schools. She graduated from Elkins

On Aug. 27, 1987, in Elkins, he was married to Kathy Ross Broschart, who

Mr. Broschart was a graduate of Coalton High School. He worked as a heavy
equipment operator and was last employed by Elmo Greer and Sons Construction Co.

Muzzleloaders, National Rifle Association and the Rambusters.
He was a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church.

Eldora Marie Tenny Simons Brown, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002.
She was born on July 21, 1929, a daughter of the late Hoy Tenny and Lula Osterishk Tenny.
She was married to Gerald Karl Simons and John Daytona Brown, both preceded her in death.
Surviving are two brothers, Eddie Light and Denver Tenney Weston; two sisters, Juanita Bare and Pauline Dunn; four sons, Donald Lee Simons, Alexandria, Va., Michael Gerald Simons, Weston, Neil E. Simons and Khevan W. Simons of Alexandria, Va.; three grandsons, Michael David Simons, Donald Scott Simons and Jason Michael Simons; and one great-grandson, Michael David Simons Jr.

Ernestine T. Beale Brown, 82, a lifelong resident of Valley Head, passed away at
1:40 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital where she had been a
patient for the past week. She had been in failing health for the past several
months.
Born March 4, 1921, in Linwood, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Dills
Wilfong and Mabel Kathryn Showalter Wilfong.
She was twice married. Her first husband, Clyde C. Beale, preceded her in death
on Dec. 9, 1972. On July 4, 1980, she was united in marriage to Fred Brown, who
preceded her in death on June 4, 1986.
Surviving is her best friend, Basil Price of Becky’s Creek; one daughter,
Nayoka Kathryn Beale Guthrie of Elkins; and two sons, Roger Wayne Beale and
wife, Alice, of Harrisonburg, Va., and Rocky Layne Beale of Valley Head.
Also surviving are two grandsons, Chad Wayne Beale of Harrisonburg, Va., and Jay
Hansford Guthrie of Great Barrington, Mass.; one great-grandson, Andrew Marshall
“Drew” Beale; several stepchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Ernestine was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded
in death by two brothers, John Randall Wilfong and Robert Garland Wilfong; and
one half brother, Rayburn Delano Doyle.
Ernestine was a homemaker. She loved sewing, making quilts and flower gardening.
She was involved in activities for raising money for the Valley Head Community
Building Fund. She was also a member of the former Ruritan Club in Valley Head,
where she held offices.
Ernestine attended the Lighthouse Chapel, which she purchased, and her best
friend, Basil, reconstructed the building for worship services.
She enjoyed chatting on the telephone with friends and relatives, especially her
friend, Woody Simmons.

Florence Adell Brown, 83, a former resident of 528 S. Davis Ave., Elkins, passed
away Saturday morning, May 10, 2003, at the Valentine Personal Care Home in
Elkins where she had been a patient since August 2001.
She was born July 19, 1919, at Amaso, Mich., the daughter of the late George
Milton and Iza Blanche Taylor.
She was married to Felix Brown, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by one son, David Brown of Franklin, Tenn.; one daughter, Carol
Higginbotham of Hohenwald, Tenn.; three half brothers, Richard, Leon and Blaine
Taylor; and four half sisters, Velma Francisko, Darlene Sones, Faye Nelligah and
Ruby Ercolani.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Tim Haddix, Mark Haddix, Dwight Haddix
and Beth Wilson, all of Elkins, Suzanne Lovett, Debra Wells, Rhonda Pennington
and Matt Brown, all of Tennessee. Sixteen great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Joan Haddix; one brother, Wesley
Taylor; two sisters, Mariam Davis and Dorothy Bishop; and one grandson, David
Brown.
Mrs. Brown was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene
in Elkins where she served as a deacon.

Harold Brown, 88, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away Thursday, March, 6,

He was born Dec. 29, 1914, at Adolph, the son of the late Cecil and Zelda

On Sept. 15, 1934, he was married to Hallie Fincham Brown, who preceded him in
death on Feb. 3, 1999.
He is survived by three sons, Douglas Brown and Dennis Brown, both of Silver
Spring, Md., and Benjamin Brown of Relay, Md.; three daughters, Olive Bradshaw

An aunt, Madge Huffman of Coalton; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and
three great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Brown was the oldest of 12 children. Preceding him in death were one son,
Everett Brown; four brothers, Paul, Robert, Joe and Mark Brown; and one sister,
Juanita Shannon.
Mr. Brown attended the schools of Randolph County and was employed in the coal
mining industry for 49 years.
He was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 4172, was a devoted
husband, father and neighbor, and enjoyed the hobbies of hunting, fishing,
trapping, honeybees and gardening.

Elkins. On Sunday, he will be moved to the Mill Creek United Methodist Church

Robert Brown
Robert Eugene Brown, 76, of Hutchinson, died suddenly at 12:40 a.m., Monday,
Nov. 17, 2003, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born Aug. 30, 1927, at Enterprise, a son of the late Benjamin Harris and
Ivy Murphy Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Zelda Marie Brown.
Mr. Brown is also survived by one son, Ancil Lynn Brown of Hutchinson; one
daughter, Zelda Sawyers of Hutchinson; two brothers, Benjamin Brown Jr. of
Enterprise and Pastor Tom Brown of Shinnston; three grandchildren, Joey, Davie
and Crystal Sawyers; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Edwards, and five brothers,
Calvin, Raymond, James, Jack and Charles Brown.
Mr. Brown graduated from Shinnston High School in 1945, after which he joined
the Army and served in the Dentistry Branch. He was first employed by the Clark
Coal Co. of Fairmont and then the Clenchfield Coal Co. at the Dola Mine. He
later was employed at the Robinson Run Mine No. 95.
Mr. Brown was the caretaker of the Enterprise IOOF Cemetery for 40 years. He was
Methodist by faith and was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows
Lodge 209 of Enterprise for the last 52 years. He was also a member of the
Encampment Lodge of Adamston.
Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home in Shinnston today from 2
p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home Thursday at 1

Ruth A. Brown
Ruth Andrew Brown, 86 of 50 Marion St., Buckhannon, died Sunday, June 22,
2003, in Spencer’s Personal Care in Buckhannon.
She was born Oct. 10, 1916, in Coffee County, Ga., a daughter of the late Oliver
and Ethel Kirkland McKinnon.
She married Glenn L. Brown, who survives in Weston.
Also surviving are one son, James F. Andrew, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one stepson,
Glenn Brown Jr. of Weston; one stepgrandson, David Brown of Washington, D.C.;
and three nieces.
She was preceded in death by one sister and her first husband, Francis E.
Andrew.
She was the former owner of radio stations WHAW and WSSN in Weston and
Andrew’s Jeweler in Buckhannon and Elkins. She was a member of the Order of
Eastern Star No. 18 of Buckhannon, Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and a Christian by
faith.
Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home today from 4 p.m. to 9

Velma D. Brown
Velma D. Brown, 93, of ManorCare Health Services in Laureldale, Pa., died at
8:46 p.m. Sept. 18, 2003, in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, where she
had been a patient for five days.
She was born Aug. 11, 1911, in Westernport, M.D., a daughter of the late O.B.
Durrett and Maudeline G. Scott Durrett.
She was the married to the late P. Dorran Brown, who preceded her in death on
Aug. 1, 1995.
Surviving are three sons, Anthony E. Brown of Reading, Pa., Michael D. Brown of
Los Angeles, and Christopher D. Brown of Portsmouth, N.H. Also surviving are
five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Brown was an elementary school teacher for seven years for the Elkins
School District in Elkins until she retired in 1940. She was a graduate of Davis
and Elkins College with a degree in English and was a member of the Nativity
Lutheran Church in Reading.

Herbert H. Browning
Herbert H. Browning, 63, of 640 Glenmore Loop Road, Elkins, passed away Friday,
Sept. 5, 2003, in the Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department. He had been
in declining health since 1991.
He was born Feb. 29, 1940, in Belington, the son of the late George G. and
Alberta Weese Browning.
On Dec. 1, 1960, he was married to Gilda Lea Primavero Browning, who survives in
Elkins.
Also surviving are two sons, Herbert H. Browning Jr. and George “Michael”
Browning, both of Elkins; two daughters, Phyllis J. Wood of Ripley and Mary
Elizabeth Burrows of Beverly; one half brother, Marshall Browning of Belington;
one stepbrother, Randy Bennett of Gettysburg, Pa.; two sisters, Beulah Jean
Griffith of Lorain, Ohio, and Shirley Blosser of Parsons; one stepsister, Betty
Sleeth of Ohio; and five grandchildren, Justin Wood of Sand Ridge, Joseph,
Matthew and Joshua Browning, all of Elkins, Ashley Burrows of Beverly and Kevin
Wood of Weston.
Also preceding him in death were his stepmother, Beatrice Taylor Browning; one
sister, Carolyn Sue; and a stepbrother, Bill Bennett.
Mr. Browning was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic for 92 Coal Co. prior
to his retirement.

Frank D. Brunette
Frank D. Brunette, 87, of 95 Elm St., Buckhannon, died Saturday,
Feb. 22, 2003, in St. Joseph's Hospital Nursing Care Facility,
Buckhannon.
He was born Dec 6, 1915 in Clarksburg, a son of the late
Salvatore and Rosa Pulice Brunetti.
He was married for 55 years to Millie E. Warner Brunette, who
survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are one daughter, Shirley McCord and husband,
Junior, Buckhannon; one brother, Dominick Brunetti and wife, Goldie, Clarksburg;
two grandsons, Steve McCord and wife, Camella, Vienna, and Brian L. McCord,
Buckhannon; one great-grandson, Payton McCord, Vienna; and one
great-granddaughter, Katie McCord, Vienna.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe Brunetti, John Brunetti, Pete Brunetti and Ed
Brunetti; and two sisters, Daisy Nardelli and
Beatrice Arthur.
He was employed by Gichner Iron Workers Inc. in Washington D.C.,
and in Beltsville, Md., for 45 years and was a master welder. He was a
field superintendent for 35 years in an area covering five states and
Washington, D.C. He retired in 1981 due to health reasons. He also
owned and operated Frank's Enterprise Inc.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus third and fourth
degree in Clarksburg Council, Loyal Order of Moose Buckhannon Lodge 598,
Buckhannon Lions club and served three years on the board of directors and local
and national AARP. He was a graduate of the University of Hard Knocks,
Honorary Alumnus of the Alderson-Broaddus college in Philippi. He served
three years as secretary of the church council at the Holy Rosary Catholic
Church,served as an Eucharist minister and was also on building committee.

two great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death was a brother, Maxwell D. Buchanan.
Mr. Buchanan was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School and the University of
Louisville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II.
He formerly lived in Akron, Ohio, and retired as a field office manager for the
West Virginia Department of Highways.
He was a member of Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars, H.W.
Daniels Post 29 American Legion and was a life member of the Lions Club of
Akron, Ohio.
He was a member of Valley Bend United Methodist Church.
He loved music and fishing, and enjoyed playing the guitar.

John Burdette Jr., 75, a resident of Files Creek Road, Beverly, departed this
life Sunday afternoon, April 20, 2003, at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in
Morgantown. He had been in declining health.
He was born Tuesday, Aug. 9, 1927, at Elkins, the son of the late John Burdette
Sr. and Era Herndon Burdette.
On Dec. 26, 1951, he was married to the former Mary Elizabeth Beck, who preceded
him in death on July 4, 1993.
Surviving are three sons, John Burdette III and wife, Wilma, Beverly, Steve
Burdette and Robbie Burdette, both of Sebastian Fla.; one daughter, Jeannie
DeLoach and husband, David, Port Saint John, Fla.; and five grandchildren,
Dillon DeLoach, Harlea Danielle Burdette, Autumn Elizabeth Burdette, Tyler Wade
Lambert and Amber Lee Lambert.
Preceding him in death besides his wife and parents are one daughter, Deborah
Lynn Lambert.
He attended the schools of Beverly and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving
on board the USS Cabot as a seaman first class during World War II.
He worked for the U.S. Department of the Interior-U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
at the Bowden Fish Hatchery, was a member of the Tygarts Valley Post 3647

George L. Burgess, 33, of Green Bank, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at home.
He was a timber cutter and a member of the Church of God.
He was born June 24, 1969, in Marlinton, a son of Virginia Tyree Burgess, who
survives in Marlinton, and the late Patrick Wesley Burgess.
He was twice married; first, to Kimberly Wegman of Beverly, and second to
Daphine Brown.
Also surviving are a son, William Wesley Burgess of Beverly; six sisters, Vada

Janet Marie Cole Burkey, 59, a resident of Route 2, Elkins, departed this
life early Saturday morning, March 8, 2003, at the Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Tuesday, April 27, 1943, at Charleston, the daughter of the late
David Albert Cole and Gladys Belcher Cole.
She was twice married, first to Chester J. Callahan, who preceded her in death.
Second, on March 23, 1982, she was married to Leon Paul Burkey, who preceded
hear in death on Dec. 13, 1990.
Surviving are one son, Mark A. Burkey and wife, Cindy, Elkins; two daughters,
Patricia G. Crabb and husband, Arlen, Aberdeen, Md., and Lisa D. McCauley and
husband, Randy, Cravensdale; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in
death by her twin brother, James Cole; and one sister, Mildred Pratey.
She attended the schools of Lincoln County, was a homemaker, enjoyed camping and
was an avid CB enthusiast with the handle, “Lady J.”

Joy Diane Cosner Burnside, 56, a former resident of the Glenmore community,
Elkins, and more recently a resident of Montrose, departed this life Friday
afternoon, Aug. 22, 2003, at her home. She had been in declining health for the
past six months and death was attributed to cancer.
She was born Saturday, May 24, 1947, in Elkins, the daughter of the late Mildred
Sue Cosner.
She was reared by her grandparents, the late Luther “Jake” Cosner and Elda
Mae Phares Cosner.
On Jan. 15, 1966, at Hot Springs, Va., she was married to William “David”
Burnside, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael David “Mike” Burnside of Upper Haddix,
and Charles Edward “Ed” Burnside and wife, Lori, of Montrose; one daughter,
Debra Ann Senese and husband, Dominick, of New Jersey; four brothers, Gary E.
Shifflett and wife, Sandra, of Elkins, Douglas K. Shifflett of Canaan Valley,
Luther Allen Cosner and wife, Lynda, of Elkins and Harold L. “Bud” Cosner of
Elkins; one sister, Janet Kerens and husband, Rich, of Struthers, Ohio; and four
grandchildren, twins Alyssa and Erin, and Zack and Koti Burnside, all of
Montrose.
Diane was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1965 and had worked
for the former Seneca Trail Restaurant in Elkins for many years.
She worked as an assistant to Dr. Ramon Morales, Dr. Sam Roberts and Dr. Frank
Mams.
She was an active member of the Elkins Church of the Brethren, served as a
secretary for the church board, was the treasurer for Camp Hope at Belington for
many years, was a former den mother for the Cub Scouts, was a noted cook and
loved to travel.

She was born April 19, 1912, at Arden, the daughter of the late Thomas and Mayme
Gattain Robinson.
Her husband, Charles Frederick Burner, preceded her in death on July 5, 1975.
Surviving are one son, Charles Ray Burner and wife, Judy, Petersburg; one
sister, Kathryn Frum, Naples, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, Jo Ellen Thompson of
Elkins; Susan Kimble of Petersburg; Karen Andriot of Louisville, Ky.; Tommy
Burner of Morgantown; Tim Phillippi of Missoula, Mont.; Berry J. Phillippi of
Virginia Beach, Va.; Beth Woodson and Jack Phillippi of Virginia; Greg Burner

Randall Joe Burr, 27, of Route 5, Box 189-H, Buckhannon, died Monday, Dec. 29,

He was born June 19, 1976, in Buckhannon, the son of Frank Burr and Katherine
Brady Burr, who survive in Buckhannon.
On July 31, 2000, he was married to Amanda Harris Burr, who survives.
Surviving are one son, Robert Burr of Buckhannon; and one sister, Misty Burr of
Buckhannon.
He was a laborer.

Emma Louise Wagner Bush, 79, formerly of Elkins, died Thursday, June 26, 2003,
in the Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, after a short illness.
Mrs. Bush was born June 14, 1924, in Huntington, Pa., a daughter of the late
Frank and Hazel Krepps Wagner.
She was a member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church at Elkins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Neill
Bush, DVM in 1991; and a sister, Mary Catherine Hoffman.
She graduated from Sibley Nursing School, Washington, D.C., and was a very
artistic person who won numerous awards for her needlepoint. She also loved to
travel and was an avid bridge player.
She was a devoted mother of four daughters, Penelope A. Compton and her husband,
Neil, of Chicago, Ill., Marjorie L. Bush, MD, and Deborah L. Bush, both of
Steubenville, Ohio, and Carolyn N. Bush of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, James
Wagner and wife, Joan, of Athens, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Blood
“Bill” of Titusville, Pa., and Cecil Darling of Verona, N.Y.

Cora Elizabeth Butcher, 88, of Harman, passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, in
Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
She was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Harman, the daughter of the late Zebulon Moab and
Mary Elizabeth Harman Judy.
In January 1955 she married her husband of 48 years, Kermit Butcher, who
survives.
Also surviving are one son, Charles “Chuck” Butcher of Harman; one brother,
Jesse Troy and wife, Ruby C. Judy, of Eglon; and one sister, Mary Ann and
husband, Mark Beckett, of Hurricane.
She was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Mason; three brothers, Harman,
Ralph and Roy; and one sister, Mae Judy.
Mrs. Butcher first worked in Celanese mill and in the 1940s and 1950s as a cook
in the CY Harman Restaurant in Harman. She was a lifelong member of the Harman
Church of the Brethren.
Friends will be received at the Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis from 2 p.m. to 9
p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be Wednesday at the Harman Church of the
Brethren where the body will lie in state from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral
hour. The Rev. Eli Hostetler will officiate. Interment will follow in the Harman
Family Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. From 29
